Nancy W. Rossi, age 52, of Studio City, California, formerly of rural Morris, passed away Tuesday morning, March 17, 2015, at her parents’ home in Saratoga Township, with her loving family by her side.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Morris, with Pastor Steven Heil-

mann and her brother, Pastor Steve Larson officiating. Interment will follow in Saratoga Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the church.

Born February 26, 1963, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Stanley and Alberta (Johnson)Larson. She graduated from Morris Community High School, with the class of 1981.

Later she graduated from barber school and when she moved to California, attended Azusa Pacific University where she majored in music. She married Michelle “Mic” Rossi on March 19, 2011, in Studio

2 arrested, 2 more wanted for Morris residential burglaries

Police continue to search for the remaining two suspects. Morris police have investigated numerous residential burglaries that occurred between Dec. 24 and Jan. 31.

Many of the burglaries occurred in the vicinity of Lisbon Road and Meadowbrook Lane, and took place Jamil Q.R. in the early Gordon Jr. evening hours when no one was home, according to a news release from

Nancy enjoyed doing arts and crafts, costume designing and loved music. She was a fun aunt and very committed friend. She was a committed Christian who shared her faith with everyone she knew.

Joliet YMCA Jets looking for swimmers, volunteers

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Children ages 6 to 18 will soon have the opportunity to join a competitive swim team in Morris, as the Joliet YMCA JETS expand to an untapped area of potential.

“We always look to identify communities where we can fill a gap,” said Missy Durkin, executive director for the Morris Community YMCA, a part of the Greater Joliet YMCA. “We reached out and families expressed interest in expanding the swim team to Morris.”

The Morris Community YMCA is holding a parent information meeting at 6 p.m.

Tuesday at the new Morris YMCA, 320 Wauponsee St. in Morris. A second meeting at Morris Community High School will be at 5:30 p.m. April 13. JETS head swim coach Dave Hedden said parents will learn about the structure of the year-round program and what to expect.

“Our goal with all of the kids is to develop them to the best they can be, in water and in life,” Hedden said. “In addition to the details of the program, we want to begin developing relationships in the community.”

Durkin said parents of children from Morris and the rest of Grundy County will find the program, like all other YMCA programs, catering to the area’s needs.

“Besides the youth development and social-skills building found in all of our branches, this program will fit what the community wants,” Durkin said. “We realize that every community is different.”

Though swimmers based in and around Morris will compete as Joliet Y JETS, they will practice at Morris Community High School in April and May, and the Morris City Pool in

“One thing that’s different about Morris is Joliet has several different high schools,” Hedden said. “It’s possible the connection with the community here could be greater because we can help develop swimmers prior to high school and it could be a great feeder program for Morris High School.”

“Fifty to 60 swimmers would be nice, though,” Kline said. “I’m excited to be in Morris and reach a larger group.”

Hedden said the YMCA already has about 135 swimmers in the Greater Joliet program.

Staff also need volunteers to help at meets.

“Each session requires about 50 volunteers and we have two or three sessions per meet,” Hedden said. “We will have parent volunteers at the information sessions so those

Hedden said prospective families don’t need to attend an information session to try ut, but tryouts will be held at the YMCA’s spring swim clinic from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 20 to 23 at Morris Community High School.

Swimmers will be coached and evaluated throughout the week and registration materials will be provided.

Swimmers who the coaches believe are not yet ready to join the team will be offered alternatives, such as YMCA swim lessons or a pre-competitive program called Flight School.

As a nonprofit, the YMCA seeks sponsorships in Morris and potential naming rights for future swim meets held in town. Hedden said naming rights would include banners and displays at events.

Additional sponsorship opportunities outside of naming rights also are available.

LOCAL NEWS Rauner’s proposed budget would cut $3.3 million from Grundy towns

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Mayor Richard Kopczick signed Wednesday morning a letter of objection to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget plans.

The letter is regarding the governor’s desire to take 50 percent of the Local Government Distributive Fund from all local governments in the state.

“Every municipality I’ve looked at so far thinks it’s flat out wrong,” Kopczick said.

“No one saw it coming. That may work in private business where he came from, but this is the public.”

The Morris City Council voted 5-1 Monday authorizing Kopczick’s signing of the letter. Alderman Don Hansen voted against the measure.

Nettle Creek signs new contract with McKinney Superintendent given another three years

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Don McKinney, superintendent and principal at Nettle Creek School District 24, signed a new three-year contract after the school board approved it Monday.

“He completed all of his goals and we like how he runs the school both financially and the curriculum,” board president John Skrapits said Wednesday.

Attempts Wednesday to reach other school board members for comment were either not immediately successful, or the members could not be reached.

The contract term runs

from March 1 to June 30, 2018, with a salary of $112,000 for the 2015-16 school year and with the salary for the subsequent years being negotiated each fiscal year, for not less than the previous year’s salary.

In addition to the salary, the board will contribute on behalf of McKinney to the Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System an amount equal to his entire required contribution as well as his required contribution to the Teachers’ Health Insurance Security Fund.

“I am very gratified that the Board of Education, by a 7 -0 vote, agreed that the work that I have done moving Nettle Creek School forward has been of such caliber that they would like me to stay an additional three years,” McKinney

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After two years of shared busing between Morris Elementary District 54, Saratoga Community School District 60C and Morris Community High School District 101, an agreement has been reached to transfer special education busing as well.

Saratoga runs the busing service, but Morris Elementary has handled special education busing previously. It has now transferred it to Saratoga.

“Through shared services and working together, we saved taxpayers a huge amount,” Morris Elementary Superintendent Teri Shaw said, adding the three districts have saved about $1 million with shared special education and transportation services.

Morris Elementary has handled the shared special education busing for more than 10 years. This occurred after Saratoga Superintendent Kathy Perry, who was then Morris Elementary School’s chief school officer, recognized that a former busing service was picking up special education students in the same area and delivering them to the same school, and billing both school districts.

An agreement was made then that Morris Elementary would handle the busing for both schools and Morris Community High School.

MCHS Superintendent Pat Halloran said sharing services makes a lot of sense, and now combining it with the regular

education busing handled by Saratoga makes even more sense.

“It helps with billing, and with setting policies so that everyone follows the same policies,” Halloran said.

Shaw said it isn’t just policies that are affected, but also personnel and payroll. Currently a bus driver for one district has to fill out a second set of paperwork for the other district in order to be able to substitute routes or drive for extracurricular activities.

“They have to be on the appropriate payroll and it can become challenging when figuring out who is billed,” Shaw said.

In 2013, the districts combined the regular education routes and had a few issues when the program got up and running. Shaw said officials are now finishing their second year of shared busing and she feels it is the perfect time to combine special education in the same manner.

“The dispatcher currently coordinates special education and regular education so the change should have no impact on students or drivers other than changing where the drivers get their paycheck.”

Morris Elementary purchased a new special education vehicle last March and has other vehicles and equipment used for special education transportation.

Shaw said the items it owns will be sold to Saratoga and any leased equipment will have the leases transferred to Saratoga.

‘Mary Poppins’ takes to the stage tonight at Minooka High School

By KRIS STADALSY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The cast and crew of this week’s performance of “Mary Poppins” at Minooka Community High School is more than a bit excited about doing this musical.

The show recently was released for performance by high schools, and has all the elements of a magical theater production, Director Glenda Smith said.

“A lot of high schools are doing it. There are a limited number of shows available (to us),” Smith said. “For us, it was a step up in challenge. I want the kids to grow and this was going to let their talents grow,” she said.

Just getting the sets ready has been a full-time production in itself, said designer Jake Weaver. The scenes change quickly. The chimney and rooftop, used in multiple scenes, had to be made in three large pieces and be strong enough to hold cast mem-

bers while they climbed and danced on it. Set pieces had to be designed and built to move around quickly, some rotating 360 degrees.

“The scene changes are very fast,” said Chris Garcia, who plays Michael Banks, one of two Banks children in the care of Mary Poppins.

“That was the most difficult thing coming in,” Garcia said.

“We have gotten it down to the point where we are super quick. The performance of the stage crew is amazing.”

Then there’s the magic of Mary Poppins. When the kitchen is trashed by the family’s houseboy, played by Nathan Zurawski, Mary Poppins magically puts the room back together with a snap of her fingers. In the original movie from 1964, Mary Poppins pulls unlimited items out of her magical, bottomless carpet bag, and she will at Minooka High School, as well.

“This is the hardest set we have done here,” Weaver said.

flying company to teach both the actors and the fly crew how to perform the stunts needed for the show.

While the stage crew still was busy building sets after months of hard work, Murray, Garcia, Ben Dow (Bert) and Megan Coleman (Mary Poppins) were taking lessons on sailing through the air, making themselves do flips and walking up steps on their hands. The first time Coleman flew across the stage was incredible, courtesy of a harness and the fly crew working the

ropes. “I felt like I was a breeze [in the air],” Coleman said.

Dow said it’s a lot of fun to fly. The actors have to put their trust in the fly crew.

If the audience has half as much fun watching “Mary Poppins” as the cast and crew are having while performing, the show will be a resounding success. “I think there’s a little sense of that childhood magic.

It’s been a fun show to work on,” Smith said. “We want it to be a great experience for the audience, but top notch.

“I find it amazing we have so many kids willing to commit so much time to theater,” Smith added.

“Ten percent of a yearly budget doesn’t sound like a lot, but in one year it’s a big hit,” Duffy said. “It impacts all local direct services, such as water and sewer, snow removal, 24-hour police protection and overall manpower, which is the biggest impact people will see.”

Kopczick said $675,000 would be taken out of Morris’ general fund by the state in one year, which “would pay quite a few city employees.”

Kopczick said he believes Rauner wouldn’t have been elected if he proposed his intentions during his campaign.

“Where’s the rest of the plan?” Kopczick said. “We could live with 5 percent. Give us a finite time frame and plan for the next five or six years to get to that 50 percent.”

Duffy said he wasn’t surprised Rauner introduced the plan, but said the magnitude is troubling. “Former Gov. Pat Quinn always talked about it, but it never went through,” Duffy said. “What’s surprising is the percentage. A 50 percent cut in one year is huge. It needs to be gradually implemented, if at all.”

Rauner introduced his proposed budget Feb. 18 to the Illinois General Assembly.

“We must be willing to take actions we would rather avoid and make decisions that may seem unpopular in the short run, but serve the best interests of the people of Illinois in the long run,” Rauner said in his speech.

Local organizations donate to Morris police MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Morris Police Department recently received two separate donations from local organizations.

Dan Bellus, community relations director for the Downers Grove Sportsman’s Club in Morris, recently presented Chief Brent Dite with a check for $500, according to a news release from Morris police.

The donation will be used for programs and equipment that enhance the safety of Morris Police Department police officers.

Pastor Esther Holiday of the House of Glory for All Nations Church, recently presented Dite and Deputy Police

Chief John Severson with a check for $300. The donation will be used to purchase child safety seats.

The Morris Police Department tries to keep seats available at the department for residents to use in emergency situations, according to the release.

“The men and women of the Morris Police Department greatly appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity of the Downers Grove Sportsman’s Club and the House of Glory for All Nations Church,” Dite said in the release. “They are both great examples of organizations that pride themselves on being involved and part of the Morris community.”

Dentist Q:

I’ve had these silver fillings in my mouth for years and they don’t hurt, but my dentist says I need to have them replaced with crowns and white fillings. Does this work really need to be done?

A:

These silver fillings are called amalgam fillings. They are composed of mercury, silver, tin, and other various metals.The amalgam fillings itself do not pose any sort of health risks, but do pose a risk on teeth. Amalgams are not chemically bonded onto the tooth and since they are made from metal, they tend to expand and contract inside of the tooth. This constant expansion and contraction causes the amalgam filling to separate microscopically from the tooth creating gaps. In these microscopic gaps, bacteria can enter the tooth causing decay underneath the filling. Because of the nature of the amalgam fillings, sometimes the decay cannot be detected using an x-ray or even seen with the eye. By the time the decay is found using an x-ray, the decay is large and root canal treatment might be necessary. Also, amalgam fillings can cause cracks in teeth, especially the larger the filling and the longer it has been in the mouth. These cracks are often asymptomatic, but over time, the crack becomes larger and the tooth will either fracture or start to hurt. If the tooth fractures, then a crown will be necessary and maybe a root canal.

If the tooth becomes symptomatic, then a root canal and crown may be the only choice to save the tooth. Having the amalgam fillings removed before cracks form is the ideal situation because typically, those amalgam fillings can be replaced with the white composite fillings. Waiting too long to replace amalgam fillings will end up in larger treatment costing more money and possibly more discomfort.

OTTAWA – Congressman Adam Kinzinger’s office is accepting submissions for the 2015 Congressional Art Competition.

This annual competition is designed to showcase artistic talents from across the nation, and a winning piece will be selected from each congressional district, according to a news release from Kinzinger’s office.

“Each year, the quantity and quality of submissions seems to grow, so I am really looking forward to this year’s competition,” Kinzinger said in the release. “The students who participate in this competition devote a great amount of time and effort to their pieces, and it is wonderful to

recognize these young, artistic talents in the Illinois 16th District.”

All submissions will be honored at an art show hosted by Kinzinger. The pieces will be voted on by both social media and a panel of judges to determine the winner and runner-ups.

The first-place-winning submission will be displayed in a year-long exhibition in the Cannon tunnel, which leads to the U.S. Capitol.

The first-place winner also will be awarded travel for two to Washington, D.C., in order to attend an art showcase and reception celebrating winners from other congressional districts from across the nation.

Three other runner-up submissions will be selected to be displayed in the Congressman’s district offices.

OPINION Saving the American Dream for all of us “I was on the subway the other day,” a dinner companion observed recently, “and the subway conductor said, ‘Please let your neighbor off first, I was stunned,” the New Yorker said. These remarks occurred at a gathering marking the publication of “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis,” by Robert D. Putnam, a Harvard sociologist and author of “Bowling Alone.”

In it, he focuses on his hometown of Port Clinton, Ohio, which, in the late 1950s, was “a passable embodiment of the American Dream, a place that offered decent opportunity for all the kids in town, whatever their background. A half century later, however, life ... is a splitscreen American nightmare, a community in which kids from the wrong side of the tracks that bisect the town can barely imagine the future that awaits the kids from the right side of the tracks. And the story of Port Clinton turns out to be sadly typical of America.”

Many of the problems that lower-class kids face stem from economics: “In the upper, college-educated third of American society, most kids today live with two parents, and such families nowadays typically have two incomes,” Putnam writes. “In the lower, high-school-educated third, however, most kids live with at most one of their biological parents, and in fact, many live in a kaleidoscopic, multi-partner, or blended family, but rarely with more than one wage earner. Scores of studies have shown that bad outcomes for kids are associated with the pattern now characteristic of the lower tier, whereas many good outcomes for kids are associated with the new pattern typical of the upper tier.”

VA bonuses unearned Some Department of Veterans Affairs employees got bonuses by manipulating reports so they would qualify for the extra pay.

Now that the truth is out, who thinks those people should get to keep the money? Would anyone but those workers answer “yes”?

Not likely. But in the lumbering bureaucracy that is the VA, it will take an act of Congress to get the money back.

Fortunately, there is support in the House and Senate for retrieving the taxpayer dollars that the workers acquired by being dishonest.

The House recently passed a measure that would authorize VA Secretary Robert McDonald to rescind bonuses and recoup payments from employees who contributed to poor veteran care.

A measure in the Senate has a similar goal, but it is more narrow and would apply only to employees in the scandal involving waiting lists for medical appointments.

It’s been a year since a whistle blower reported that dozens of veterans may have died while awaiting treatment at the Phoenix

VA hospital, where appointment records had been altered to hide the delays.

A subsequent audit confirmed extensive and systemic problems at VA facilities nationwide, with thousands of veterans waiting months for appointments and schedulers reporting they’d been pressured to disguise the long wait times.

Despite changes made in the aftermath of the scandal, some individuals reaped financial reward from it.

They’re lucky to still have jobs.

The broader House bill may be better than the Senate measure, which could wrongly send a message that the problem was a onetime thing. Look no further than the local VA facility for a different example – an administrator in Pittsburgh who received a $63,000 bonus even as a critical report was released on how a Legionnaire’s disease outbreak had been mishandled.

Congress needs to come down hard so that unwarranted VA bonuses can be revoked.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Draft Day looming large for Morris’ Henry Central Michigan lineman has pro day Friday to appeal to scouts

– Coming off a heartbreaking defeat in the Bahamas Bowl that saw his Central Michigan squad make a feverish 34-point comeback only to fall short on what would have been a game-winning two-point conversion, Kevin Henry didn’t have much time to be disappointed.

It was the end of his collegiate career, but having dreamed of playing in the NFL since he was 5 years old, it was also the beginning of what he hopes to be the realization of that dream.

“We got back from the Bahamas on Christmas and I spent Christmas with my family and New Years with my family,” Henry said. “But then on Jan. 2, I was in a car on my way out to New Jersey where I train, so I didn’t take too much time.

“I didn’t want to be sitting around doing nothing. My dream is to play in the NFL and I knew it was time to get started.”

Tumultuous bowl game or not, Henry knew he’d have a lot of work to do between the end of the college season and the 2015 NFL Draft.

He hooked up with renowned NFL trainer Brian Martin, who has worked with the likes of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson.

He now trains at Parabolic, a performance training center based in New Jersey.

Now, with Central Michigan’s pro day Friday, Henry is looking to impress dozens of NFL scouts by showing an improved 40-yard dash time and overall skill set.

If he runs the sub-4.9 second time he’s hoping for, he may

As of now, most talent scouts believe Henry will be a priority undrafted free agent, meaning he wouldn’t be selected in the seven rounds of the NFL Draft, but he’d be contact-

ed by a team and offered a contract with an opportunity to earn his spot on a 53-man roster at an NFL training camp.

Jeff Curts, a talent evaluator who publishes The Slant: NFL Draft Guide annually currently rates Henry as one

of the 80 best offensive tackles (out of more than 175 evaluated) and agrees that Henry’s currently looking like a UFA. Although, he admits a sub4.9 second time in the 40 could put him on a team’s radar to merit a selection.

“His chief asset is his footwork,” Curts said in an email exchange earlier this week.

“He moves and slides well, but he has a tendency to play high. . . . He’s a better run blocker than past protector, at this point.

“The Chippewas played in a pro-style offense with a lot of play-action, so that’s advantageous. He’s a hard worker with a sound work ethic.”

He concluded that Henry’s best bet would be to get into a camp and take advantage of limited reps to earn a spot on a practice squad while he develops.

When Henry read Curts’ evaluation, he thought it was a fair assessment.

“As of now everything is pointing at undrafted free agent,” Henry said. “But my numbers are going to be a lot better than what some websites have me listed.

“For me, though, it really doesn’t matter. (Being drafted or going undrafted) both have their pros and cons, but I’m just looking for an opportunity.”

As Henry continues to work toward that opportunity, his agent, Dave Schuman has had inquiries from all 32 NFL teams about Henry.

Ultimately, Henry’s performance Friday at his pro day will be a major factor in whether he’s picked or not.

Regardless, after he completes his combine drills, he’ll focus on position-specific work heading into the NFL Draft.

And once he lands with an NFL team, that’s when the real work will begin.

The Morris softball team had the bats going strong, and pitcher Abby Burns kept the Wilmington bats relatively silent as the Redskins cruised to a 16-2 season-opening win in six innings Tuesday.

Burns threw all six innings, giving up four hits, five walks, one earned run and striking out six.

Offensively for Morris, which returns to action at 4:30 Tuesday in its home opener against Plainfield Central, Taya Torkelson led the way, going 4 for 4 with two singles, two doubles and two RBIs. Melissa Benson (RBI), Emily Moore (two doubles, RBI), and Ashley Phelps each added two hits.

Rodon’s future with Sox still uncertain

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Sure, there are service time issues for the White Sox and Carlos Rodon. But the big difference between Rodon and, say, the Cubs’ Kris Bryant, is that Rodon has less than 25 innings of minor league experience.

So to send their prized lefty and No. 3 overall draft pick back to the minor leagues for more seasoning even though it’s conceivable he could help the big league club in April wouldn’t be all about ensuring an extra year of team contract control of Rodon – who like Bryant is represented by Scott Boras – down the road.

Scouts who have watched Rodon make his three Cactus League starts like his build and his stuff. Rodon had fastball command issues, albeit not great ones, in the minors last summer, and those have

An American League scout said Rodon is “not ready” just yet.

“Like any young pitcher he is overthrowing, which affects his command,” the scout said.

In 7 1⁄ 3 Cactus League innings, Rodon has allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out eight. It’s a small sample size, as is his 241⁄3 innings (with a 2.96 ERA) of minor league work over Rookie, Class A and AAA levels last season. At AAA Charlotte, he struck out 18 and allowed three runs over 12 innings.

least a week or two to start the season, speculation has followed Rodon to a possible rotation spot, although the Sox conceivably don’t need a fifth starter till the third week because of three off days in the first two weeks. They could use him out of the bullpen and let him soak in big-league knowledge from pitching coach Don Cooper, bullpen coach Bobby Thigpen and major league teammates, but the Sox have two bullpen lefties in Zach Duke and Dan Jennings.

Rodon has pitched as a starter only here and is preparing as one, but he’s on the schedule to pitch in relief Saturday against the Royals. Brad Pen-

ny is slated to start that day.

As much as he looks the part and as big as everyone believes Rodon’s future is, it looks more and more like his future with the Sox is not immediate, although general manager Rick Hahn said Wednesday it’s not out of the question.

“I think it’s a lot to ask of anybody but we haven’t closed the door to it,” Hahn said. “It’s why he’s still here. We want to give him the opportunity to work with Coop and get repetitions at the big league level and see everything it entails competing at this level. But it is important to keep in mind that a year ago he was in the ACC [at North Carolina State]

and has 25 career professional innings under his belt.

“We are very bullish on his future and confident he’s going to help us toward the front end of our rotation for years to come. But the path to getting him to that spot hasn’t been determined just yet.”

Rodon has handled his attention with aplomb and modesty, saying he’s good with whatever is best for the Sox. “He needs work on his changeup,” a National League scout said. “He needs to trust it if he’s going to start. He probably should go pitch in AA or AAA and maybe he comes up and helps the team some time this year. If they were rebuilding I’d send him up there now, but [the Sox] have a good team and want to win now.

“It can crush a kid’s spirit to get his brains beat out in the big leagues if he isn’t mentally tough. But I like his arm. I like his stuff.”

Fred Allen, a comedian who died in 1956, said, “I always have trouble remembering three things: faces, names and – I can’t remember what the third thing is.”

That joke has been rewritten is various forms. For our second common error in this week’s columns, we turn to third hand play. The opening lead has been made, and dummy’s card played. What should third hand do?

Look at the East hand in today’s diagram. South is in four spades. West leads the club two. Which card should East play?

In the bidding, North, over West’s takeout double, might bid two spades (very cautious), three spades (better) or four spades (best, following the primary dictum of the Law of Total Tricks – in competition, bid as high as the number of trumps your side holds).

Whatever North chooses, though, four spades will be the final contract.

At trick one, East must play the club jack. Why? Here, South wins the trick with his ace and leads a trump, putting West back in. Trick one told West that East holds the club queen (otherwise, South would have taken the first trick with that card, not with the ace). So West should see that it is right to lead another low club. East will win with his queen and should shift to a heart.

West takes two tricks in that suit for down one. (If West has a diamond winner coming, it isn’t going anywhere, but heart tricks might – and will – evaporate.)

Finally, if declarer ducks the first trick, East should immediately switch to the heart nine. West’s lead marks South with the club ace, so returning that suit would be a waste of time.

Healthy eating plate reflects latest in nutrition science Dear Doctor K: Is a healthy diet still based on the food guide pyramid? Is there a better alternative?

Dear Reader: Twenty years ago, the USDA created its food guide pyramid. This symbol featured fats and oils at the tip and breads and grains at its base, with fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy in between.

The pyramid was meant to convey, in a simple illustration, everything needed to build a healthful diet.

But the original pyramid, as well as the updated 2005 version, was easy to misinterpret.

For example, some people thought the top foods were most important, rather than the other way around.

The pyramids didn’t

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff provide enough details about healthful food choices within each category. They made no distinction, for example, between fatty red meat and lean fish. What’s more, the pyramid proportions were not always based on the most recent scientific evidence.

As a result, in 2011 the USDA introduced a totally new icon called MyPlate. Experts from the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard Health Publications Division of Harvard Medical School then created an even better alter-

native. It is based on a wealth of nutrition research. (I’ve put an illustration of the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

You can use the plate as a guide to distributing foods on your own plate. Of course, not every meal will look like the Healthy Eating Plate. But your meals over the course of the day can reflect these proportions. Here is what’s on the plate: • Fully half of the plate contains fruits and vegetables.

• A quarter of the plate is whole grains (not just any grain, as in the USDA version).

• The final quarter is healthful sources of protein like fish, beans, nuts, seeds, poultry and eggs.

• A bottle on the left side is a reminder to use healthy oils, like olive and canola. Limit butter and avoid unhealthy trans fats.

• A glass on the right side is a reminder to drink low- or no-calorie liquids, limit milk and juice, and avoid sugary drinks.

• At the bottom is a reminder to stay active for health and to maintain a normal weight.

We talk a lot about healthy eating in this column. That’s because you ask a lot of questions about it. It’s not unusual for my patients to ask me: “Is there really scientific evidence behind all this advice about a healthy diet?”

There have been studies involving millions of people

whose diet and health have been followed for decades.

We can say with confidence: People who eat according to these guidelines reduce their risk of several diseases that can shorten life and diminish its quality.

The Harvard Healthy Eating Plate is sound information. As nutrition researchers uncover more information over time, I’m sure the Healthy Eating Plate will undergo some changes to reflect important new evidence. But even if not perfect, it contains information you can bank on.
