Born: July 31, 1927; in Minneapolis, MN Died: March 16, 2015; in Morris, IL Dean A. Burnes, Sr., age 87, of Morris, passed away Monday, March 16, 2015, at Morris Hospital. Born July 31, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dean Albion was a son of the late Clinton Hartig and Dorothy (Bailey) Burnes. He was raised and educated in Minneapolis and was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. On July 24, 1949, Dean married Grace Marie Johnson in Wilmington. He worked at Atlas Paper Mill in Morris, as well as The Joliet Army Ammunition Plant. After the death of Grace in 1974, Dean relocated to Dallas Texas,
where he gained employment with Bankers Life and Casualty, and later retired from Dallas Theological Seminary. On May 8, 1997, Dean married LaVerne Day (nee Allison) in Dallas, and together they made their home back in Morris. Dean was a member of First Baptist Church in Morris, and will be remembered for his love of golf, fishing and model trains. Survivors include his wife, LaVerne; eight children, Becky Burnes Foster of Morris, Tom (Amy) Burnes of Wilmington, Ruth Mance of Ottawa, Dean, Jr. (Nancy) Burnes of Wilmington, Peggy (Tom) Uerkwitz of Coal City, Randy (Joanne) Burnes of Braidwood, Jan (Rich) Huppert of Thorton and Cathy Barnes of Mesquite, TX; daughterin-law, Carol Day of Morris; (30) grandchildren; (55) great grandchildren; (14) great-great grandchildren; and five brothers, Clinton, Jr. “Bud”, James, David, Jon and Gene. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Grace; two daughters, Donna Jean and Cheryl Lynn; one great granddaughter, Grace Ann; three step-children, Jon, Jim and Jody; one sister, Janet Faxon; and three brothers, Doug, Bruce and Keith Burnes. A private family visitation will be held, and cremation rites are being accorded per Dean’s wishes. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 20, 2015, from 12:00 noon until time of memorial service 2:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 East Washington Street (one block east of Illinois Route 47) in Morris. Pastor Steve Larson will officiate, and inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Morris. Cathie A. Kalchbrenner, 54, of Davis Junction passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Cathie was born August 3, 1960, daughter of Jack Chapman and Virginia (Wilkins) Murphy. She loved camping and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include partner for over 30 years, Kerry Kalchbrenner; daughter, Tina (Brett) Shannon; grandchildren, Hayley and Caden Shannon; father, Jack (Janice) Chapman; mother, Virginia Murphy; brother, Scott Chapman; step brother, Brian Chapman; step sisters, Brenda Reynolds and Barbara Herndon; host of nieces and nephews. Predeceased by step-father, David Murphy; grandparents, Frank and Millie Wilkins. At Cathie’s request, a private family service will be held. Since K-9 unit was added to Morris, frequency of drug arrests increased By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Officer Patrick Funk thought he wanted to be a high school gym teacher and football coach – until he went for a ride along with his uncle, a Shorewood detective. A former football player and graduate of Morris Community High School, Funk returned to Morris as a police officer in July 2013 after nine months at the Normal Police Department. Less than three years into his career, Funk was named Morris Officer of the Year at the Morris City Council meeting Monday night. “He has the passion to be the best officer possible,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Tuesday. “He believes he was destined to be here, where he grew up.” Funk led the department in drug arrests in 2014 and recently received thank-you letters from both the Oswego and Lockport police departments for performing K-9 searches at all of their high schools, Dite told the council Monday. Funk works the 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift because it allows him to use Talon, the department’s drug-sniffing K-9, during school hours and peak hours for drug busts, Dite said. State police and departments throughout Grundy County can call Funk if they’re in need of Talon’s drug-sniffing talent. “It doesn’t matter what time of day it is,” Funk said. “I love drug enforcement. I like to think that Talon and I can play a part in keeping drugs out of our community.” But Funk doesn’t always need Talon. He busted two individuals in a traffic stop Sunday with 54 bags of heroin after the driver consented to a search, as Talon waited in the patrol car. A 2-year-old Dutch shep-

Since beginning service together in October 2013, Dite said the pair have been what he envisioned when he began working toward forming a K-9 unit. “It had been a 3- to 4-year project,” Dite said. “In a perfect world I’d like to have two, so we could have one on duty at all times. It’s been a great partnership with the state’s attorney.” Training, purchasing and equipping Talon cost about $13,000, a cost that was paid for by the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office. Morris Police Chief Brent Dite presents officer Patrick Funk with an award for Officer of the Year at the Morris City Council meeting Monday night. torney Jason Helland said the money comes from Grundy County’s drug asset forfeiture fund, which is supported through asset forfeitures made on drug arrests. “We’ve definitely discussed adding another K-9 Officer in Morris,” Helland said. “It’s up to Dite’s discretion and whether he has the manpower and resources to train another officer in the next couple years.” Helland said the state always is looking to add assets to
the police force with the forfeiture fund, and that he’s noticed a considerable increase in frequency of drug arrests in Morris since Talon debuted. Helland said he’s spoken to Coal City about adding a K-9 officer, but the department doesn’t have the manpower available right now. The state’s attorney’s office already has provided funding for a dog for the Minooka Police Department. When Talon isn’t on duty,
or spending 16 hours-a-month training with Funk in Joliet, he’s just like any other dog and lives with Funk and his fiancee. Funk said he has to use two tennis balls to play fetch because Talon tries to chase down the ball intended for their other dog. Dite said in addition to Talon’s ability as a Morris K-9 officer, he adds a public relations aspect because most people enjoy dogs and appreciate what he can do for the community.

LOCAL NEWS Minooka considers teacher cuts At least two educators appear to be cut from high school budget By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – To address an increasing deficit in Minooka Community High School District 111’s budget, the school board is set to consider Thursday making cuts in personnel, including teachers, clerical and administrative staff. Superintendent Jim Blanche said he was not able to give exact details of the layoffs until the meeting, but the cuts will be across the board. “We had to come up with close to $1 million in reductions from the general fund,” Blanche said. “Probably 85 percent of our budget is personnel, so where are you going to go to make a million dollars
of cuts besides the personnel? ... We have been working with the board for several months now to make changes that are the least disruptive to our students.” Many students did not take the news well after reportedly hearing Friday that at least two teachers appear to be cut. Destiny Staton, a sophomore in teacher Tyler White’s symphonic band class, said White told the class his position was being cut from the music program. She and some friends began an online petition, “Don’t let Minooka shrink the arts department,” they intend to present Thursday to the school board this week. The petition, which can be found by searching at www. thepetitionsite.com, had 1,793 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon. “We started it because Mr. White told us he wouldn’t be
able to come back next year to teach band,” Destiny said, “and he’s my favorite teacher. He’s one of those teachers you can talk to about anything, and he makes you feel like you matter. It would be awful to lose him.” The high school district is operating with an annual deficit. This year, that deficit will be $3.5 million. The school has implemented other measures to reduce the deficit the past two years, such as a $2.1-million-a-year expenditure reduction plan. An approximate $300,000 in additional reductions and savings also are expected to be seen this year from reductions already put in place, such as from reducing costs of transportation and cutting the athletic trainer from full time to part time.

20 percent of residents in county claim Irish heritage By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – We may be a long way from Ireland, but it appears numerous Grundy County residents have family roots connecting them to the Irish land. According to the United States Census Bureau, 20 percent or more of Grundy County’s population claimed Irish ancestry in 2013, one of the largest percentages of all the state’s counties. In neighboring Will and LaSalle counties, 15 to 19 percent of its populations claimed to be born with the luck of the Irish. Those of Irish decent, and some who just like to wear green, celebrated St. Patrick’s
Day on Tuesday at the Morris American Legion by dining on the traditional corned beef and cabbage. Hollyn Kupiec of Morris was on hand to help serve the traditional meal. Kupiec said she is proud of her Irish heritage, noting both sets of her grandparents had strong Irish names – O’Kane and O’Dell. She has visited Ireland twice in her life, she said, and met family who still lives there. When she thinks of St. Patrick’s Day she thinks of corned beef and cabbage and green beer. While in Ireland, she enjoyed two other Irish dishes – blood sausage for breakfast and Irish stew for dinner, Kupiec said.
The holiday began as a way to honor St. Patrick, who introduced Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century, according to a news release from the Census Bureau.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media corespondent CHANNAHON – Channahon residents wanting to operate a bakery or other food operation out of their homes may now do so legally. Village trustees Monday approved a local “cupcake law,” an ordinance addressing the sale of food products by home kitchen and cottage food operations. The measure was in response to resident Tracey Wurzinger, a chef for a Naperville establishment who appeared before the board earlier this month requesting the ordinance. Wurzinger wants to start a small business at her Channahon home, making cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and other baked goods for sale for parties and other occasions. The state’s cupcake law, or House Bill 5354, passed into Illinois law in June and allows people to sell food products made in their homes without acquiring permits, as long as the dollars received per month do not exceed $1,000. With the law, the small businesses don’t have as much regulatory oversight as larger commercial businesses, according to Channahon’s Village Attorney Dave Silverman, and county health department inspections are not necessary. But local governing bodies

must first adopt an ordinance authorizing it. The village board Monday also approved making a commitment to Illinois Central Management Services for the purchase of 1,200 tons of rock salt to be used for roads next winter. It was difficult to estimate the amount to purchase, Public Works Director Ed Dolezal said. The proposed budget allows $84,000 for salt, but Dolezal said CMS is not giving municipalities a fixed price at this time. This past year, Channahon and other area towns had to scramble to find alternate sources of salt after no bids were received for a supply of rock salt through CMS, and Channahon had to pay almost double what it had previously, at $98.25 per ton, from an outside source, Central Salt. Previous contracts with CMS were $51.99, $53.71, $59.76, and $57.96 per ton. With an estimated 500 tons of salt that will be in storage at the end of this season, the board decided to put in a bid for 1,200 tons for next year, hoping the price will be closer to that of years prior. The village board also approved the hiring of two police officers to replace two who resigned. The candidates will be selected and sworn in after additional testing.

Channahon OKs cupcake law, hopes for lower rock salt prices

Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C has many plans for construction and refurbishing in the near future. At Monday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Kathy Perry unveiled a proposal for a new asphalt parking lot around the school. The lot would allow the current bus and special education parking to become car parking, while the bus, bus driver and special education parking would be relocated to allow a smooth flow of traffic. The board voted to receive bids, considering its budget, and is expected to vote at the May meeting. If approved, Perry said she would like to start construction in June. “Our budget is estimated at $160,000 for this project. We don’t have any bids yet, but we can at least see and can always reject bids.” Perry said. Twelve new swings for the playground are in the works, due to a donation from the Neil Trotter family. Principal Joe Zweeres said the asphalt work could possibly be combined with the parking lot and swing project to cut cost, if applicable. Other projects include new north café tables, bathroom partitions, replacing the library and south computer lab univents, and a wall between the library and south computer lab. Perry also told the board that on April 6 the Lisbon Road overpass will be out of service, with construction predicted to be finished in November, per the Illinois Department of Transportation. She said this construction affects two elementary routes and the bus drivers have made alternate routes for the students.

A new schedule change may be in order as well. “The administrative staff is looking for changes for the 2015-16 school year. We are playing around with schedules to see what we can fit in with our current staff. We are throwing all options out there,” Zweeres said.
Bills would revise expulsion, examination policies
School District General Counsel Jim Peters of Zukowski Law Firm presented his annual report on recent proposed education legislation from the state. One proposal was the Immunization Exemption bill (Senate Bill 1776), which amends the school code concerning religious exemption for required student examinations and/or immunizations. Peters said the bill as it stands is “vague” and the tighter restrictions in it will “curb abuse.” The bill states those who have objections due to conflicts with their religious tenets or practices, and not just objecting on religious grounds, shall not have to submit their children or wards to such examinations or immu-
nizations in which they object. Another bill, Learning Days (House Bill 2781), is a pilot bill implementing e-learning into the schools for a set number of days during the year. This allows children to attend school at home, using technology, which Peters said could save the state money. Another hot topic was the Student Discipline Bill (House Bill 2682), which amends school policies on expulsion of students. “Chicago Public Schools expels very few students in comparison with the rest of this region. Some feel that too many students are being expelled,” Peters said. Peters raised concerns about the proposed bill, as it would require a significant threat of imminent serious harm to other pupils or to staff to expel a student, instead of providing for the expulsion of pupils guilty of gross disobedience or misconduct. And, unless a student commits a felony on school property, and/ or repeated crime, the authorities are not to be involved. Peters said he feels the proposal would “cause chronic situations,” because a student can commit multiple non-felony crimes, as long as it’s not the same crime, and not be expelled, or have authorities be involved.

MVK, Channahon earn state berths STAFF REPORTS SENECA – It’s onward to state for two area eighth-grade volleyball teams. Mazon-Verona-Kinsman punched its ticket with a 2517, 25-13 win over Grant Park in the Class 8-2A Seneca Sectional Championship match Monday, while Channahon outlasted Shorewood Troy, 2513, 14-25, 25-20, to win the Class 8-4A Coal City Sectional. Grant Park had no answer for MVK’s Samantha Macchietto, who had 14 kills and three digs. Teammate Alyssa Binion added five kills, three aces and two digs. Kylie Winsor added 10 aces and two digs. Rebekah Chapman also contributed five aces, two digs and one kill. Other contributors for the Lady Mavericks (18-4) were Madison Tondini and Madelyn Isham with three digs. The team’s setters, Lauren Dooley and Kylie Winsor, had a combined 20 assists. Strong serving and hitting by the Lady Mavericks were keys to the victory.

Morris baseball team opens with a win at Wilmington STAFF REPORTS WILMINGTON – A strong pitching performance from Cody Niewinski and timely hitting led the Morris baseball team to a season-opening 7-2 win over Wilmington on Tuesday. Niewinski (1-0) went six innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Tom Cheshareck worked the seventh inning, walking one and striking out three. On the offensive end, Cheshareck was 1 for 3 with a run and three RBIs, while Tyler Bordner had a double and scored a run. Emmett Chouinard was 1 for 2 with two runs and an RBI, while Jake McDonald had a hit and scored a run. Morris returns to action Friday at Plainfield North.

BRIEF Jack Haley, who played a reserve role on the Chicago Bulls’ 1995-96 championship team, died of heart disease Monday. He was 51. Haley played seven minutes of one game for the Bulls during that historic season, which saw Chicago go 72-10 on the way to the title. Despite the lack of playing time because of a knee injury, Haley cherished his role during that historic season. “I haven’t had a chance to play because of my knee, but I still feel I’ve made a contribution,” Haley told the Sun-Times in 1996. “Phil [Jackson] allowed me the opportunity to be a part of the assistant coaching staff this year, so I’ve acted more as a coach. Even though I haven’t gotten to play, I still feel like I’m part of the Bulls. It’ll still be a championship for me.”

By BRIAN SANDALOW For the Sun-Times For once, the news around the Bulls was generally good and the controversy was left pretty much to a minimum. Sure, the talk about minutes limits and untimely substitutions isn’t going away anytime soon, but Tuesday was probably one of the better days the team has had over the past month. Not only did Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson practice fully, but coach Tom Thibodeau said Derrick Rose is “on schedule, maybe even slightly ahead” as he recovers from the Feb. 27 surgery on the torn meniscus in his right knee. “It’s good, steady progress,” Thibodeau said. “As long as he’s able to keep moving forward like this, I think it’s a real good sign.” The Bulls need some good signs. They’ve lost five of their past six and entered play

But I think some people are still a few days behind and whenever their body gets back to it they’ll be back at it.” Jimmy Butler, Bulls guard Tuesday in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, 2½ games behind Cleveland for the lead in the Central Division. The rumblings about usage and who wants players on the floor for how much flared up after Sunday’s loss in Oklahoma City when Joakim Noah only played six fourth-quarter minutes. As for the minutes, Thibodeau explained how Noah ideally would be lifted around the same time, but issues like foul trouble, matchups, long stretches without whistles or a short bench could keep him on the floor longer early in the game. That then could factor into Noah’s usage late, like it
did Sunday. “There’s a lot of stuff that goes into it. I tried to do the best I could all year with it,” Thibodeau said of Noah, who didn’t speak to reporters Tuesday. “I think he’s averaging less than 31 minutes a game so… . But we’re going to adhere to what we’re asked to do.” That said, Rose, Butler and Gibson are making progress. Rose has moved onto the next phase of his rehab and did noncontact activities during practice, while Butler and Gibson’s returns are coming close. “It’s good, it’s good to see everybody out there trying to get back as soon as possible,” Butler said. “But I think some peo-
ple are still a few days behind and whenever their body gets back to it they’ll be back at it.” When everybody’s back, it means the Bulls would have a chance to keep some people fresh over the last part of the season. They also could have the three key pieces ready to go before the playoffs start in midApril, something that could be valuable in the first round. See, good news. “It’s critical for us. There’s 14 games left,” Thibodeau said. “You want to build some continuity and it would be good to have everyone out there. Certainly, all three guys … you look at Jimmy, Derrick and Taj, they’re critical to our
team. When we have those guys it gives us good depth.” That depth – whenever it arrives – will help a team that’s had to stretch itself without three players. Butler said “you can tell” some of his Bulls teammates are tired, something that could get better when the team is theoretically at full strength. “But I think that’s part of the league. It’s a learning curve for everybody,” said Butler, who added it’s possible he could play later this week. “You get a lot of young guys that are out there playing. They’re not used to it down the stretch. Every possession’s important now, especially going into the playoffs.” The sooner everybody’s back, the sooner that players get back into their roles. So, could Butler or Gibson be back this week? “I’m hopeful,” Thibodeau said, “but I don’t want to speak until I’m told.”

The Fed doesn’t want to be audited Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., seems to have really struck a nerve with his “Audit the Fed” bill, S. 264. The Federal Reserve Transparency Act would require the central bank to be audited by the Government Accountability Office. The House passed Audit the Fed with broad bipartisan support in 2012 and 2014, but the proposal was stymied both times when Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., then the Senate majority leader, refused to bring it up for a vote. Now that Republicans have gained control of both chambers of Congress, the bill’s odds of passing have improved (it currently has 32 Senate co-sponsors), and that has officials within the Federal Reserve and the Obama administration very nervous. Sen. Paul’s transparency measure is “dangerous,” according to Jason Furman, chairman of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. Not to be outdone, Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher tossed out a red herring in an interview with The Hill. “Who in their right mind would ask the Congress of the United States – who can’t cobble together a fiscal policy – to assume control of monetary policy?” His point about the ineptness of Congress is well-taken, but Audit the Fed does not, in any way, call on Congress to “assume control of monetary policy,” any more than an

audit of a private company’s books constitutes an accounting firm assuming control of the company’s business policies. That argument also diverts from the Fed’s own poor record, which has seen the dollar lose 96 percent of its value during the Fed’s 102 years of oversight, not to mention that Americans have had less price stability than before the Fed’s creation and since have endured the most severe, longest-lasting economic depressions in our nation’s history. “Some say the Fed is already audited,” Sen. Paul noted in a Breitbart column last month. “Well, when the auditor came to Congress, she was asked the identity of the debt bought by the Fed. She didn’t know. When pressed on the case, she responded, ‘We do not have the jurisdiction to directly go and audit reserve bank activities.’ ” This is precisely why a comprehensive audit is needed. That Fed and government officials would be shocked – shocked! – that people would have the temerity to demand to know how an unelected cabal of large banking interests makes trillions of dollars materialize out of thin air – and to whom and for what purposes that money is given – shows disdain for the taxpaying public and, perhaps, fear of what they might find out.

Cancer began to grow in his transplanted liver, and by December 2005 he was dead. Still, some woman, whose name we never will know, gave him a year and a half he never would have had. My brother was not a man prone to much introspection.
He was a farmer. Most things were black and white: crop yields, commodity prices, hog weights. But when it came to the unknown woman who gave a part of herself to him, he became quiet and contemplative. “I wonder what she was like. Did she have kids?” he said shortly before he died. I wondered if her family missed her as much as I would miss Dan. We do know this much about the woman: She cared enough to give. Next month is organ donor month in Illinois. Adam Carolla, a comedian and actor, said, “I am not a good cue card reader.” Successful bridge players understand cue-bids and are good card readers. A cue-bid is a call in a suit bid naturally by an opponent, the cue-bidder having no desire to play in that suit. Exactly what a cue-bid means depends upon the situation. To start this week, we have been looking at replying to partner’s takeout double. If the advancer (the doubler’s partner) has at least 12 high-card points (or an excellent 11) and his hand is not suitable for no-trump, he should cue-bid the opener’s suit – as South does in today’s deal. This cue-bid is totally artificial, just point-showing. In answer, the doubler bids four-card suits up the bidding ladder – here, rebidding two hearts. Then South jumps to four spades to confirm a long suit but a minimum in high cards. (Yes, he can bid a forcing two spades, which North would raise to four spades.) Against four spades, West leads the heart ace: four, jack, three. West cashes the heart king: five, two, six. Then West continues with the heart 10. East, after ruffing away dummy’s heart queen, shifts to a diamond. How should South read the cards from there? Based on West’s opening bid, the diamond finesse stands no chance, but the club finesse is a certainty. Also, note that declarer needs the club finesse to win. So, he should take the trick with his diamond ace, draw trumps ending in hand, and run the club jack. The diamond queen disappears on dummy’s third club.

Because she’s elderly, I parked as close to the door of the business as I could. I honestly didn’t see any signs or any parking meters. When we came out, there was a $25 ticket on my vehicle. upset Mom gave me a $20 bill to help. She now says she did it because I made her feel guilty and, since it is my car and she’s my mother, I should pay for the whole thing and return her money! If I’m stuck with the whole thing I will resent it and won’t speak to her.
