GOOSE LAKE – Crime Stoppers of Grundy County is seeking information regarding a recent residential burglary in Goose Lake. The incident occurred between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the 3000 block of N. Lincoln Lake Drive in Goose Lake.

The suspect(s) stole jewelry, change and other items. Callers providing information to the Crime Stoppers Line at 815-9429667 will remain anonymous and rewards of up to $5,000 are eligible for information that leads to an arrest and filing of criminal charges on crime occurring in Grundy County.

& Healthcare Centers has announced its schedule of Childbirth and Family Classes for March. A Baby Care Basics class will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. March 18 in the Morris Hospital Boardroom. Seneca school researches 1920s, performs ‘Anything Goes’ on Friday and Saturday If you go

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com SENECA – Audiences present Friday and Saturday at the Seneca Township High School auditorium can hop in a time machine back to the Roaring ‘20s for a performance of “Anything Goes.”

The school’s annual spring musical is open to the public at 7 p.m. both days, but area senior citizens were invited to an early performance Wednesday.

“I said, ‘Great Depression’ and they looked at me like, ‘I’m not depressed,’ ” director Phil Hardin said to the audience before the curtain was drawn back. “The kids didn’t know the style of the 1920s, because they’re so into the present day.

Having them learn the vernacular and accents of the time was the biggest challenge.”

Hardin described “Anything Goes” as a romantic comedy about two people who fall in and out of love, with a backdrop of Prohibition-era life.

To help the cast get accustomed, Hardin recommended study of iconic characters from films set in the 1920s, many of which were gangster flicks about the period.

As director, Hardin promoted authenticity of the time period. The school rented costumes for the cast and antiques for the set, all made

in the 1920s. He said audiences should come out to enjoy the depiction of a simpler time in history.

“There’s something to be said for old standards,” Hardin said. “It’s simple humor and a simple way of life. I’ve been a part of ‘Anything Goes’ five or six times in my career, and it’s just a fun show to do with live ragtime music and dance.”

But for seniors Brandon Grossi, who played Billy Crocker, and Lauren Hickle, who played Reno Sweeney, the production was different from anything they’ve done before.

“This is the [first] production I’ve been in where I play a somewhat serious character,” Grossi said. “To prepare, I searched for productions of this musical.”

Although they’ve worked together throughout high school and built chemistry, the lead actors used different

Hickle had to learn how to play Sweeney, a nightclub singer.

“I watched accent videos on YouTube and found some 1920s videos,” Hickle said.

“The character I’m playing is very different than being in ‘Wizard of Oz,’ which we did last year. Reno is a very outgoing, racy character.”

The musical debuted in 1934 and has two film versions, made in 1936 and 1956.

Since its Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2011, “Anything Goes” has toured

the United States and Britain, and is performed throughout the world in school theater programs.

Linda Harlow of Verona and Mary Anderson of Seneca said they’ve been attending spring musicals at Seneca for six or seven years.

Both said they’re big fans of theater. The senior citizens had the opportunity to socialize prior to the show at a 5 p.m. dinner. The evening was free of charge.

“It’s always a pleasant evening,” Harlow said. “I really have nothing to complain

about. The kids are so talented. The food is very good.”

Anderson said she’s been looking forward to the show for a few months. In January, she went with her grandson, Mathew Anderson, to a performance of the musical at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, which was part of a national tour.

Mathew, who plays Sir Evelyn Oakleigh in the high school performance, learned in December the school was performing “Anything Goes” and so the pair decided to attend the Rialto show.

LOCAL NEWS County, Minooka, Morris to develop Brisbin Road Agreement is needed to recapture expenses

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County is working with Minooka and Morris to create a pre-annexation agreement to allow the county to move forward with the Brisbin Corridor Project, part of a five-year plan for industrial growth on Brisbin Road from Interstate 80 north to Sherrill Road.

Grundy County Engineer Craig Cassem said the county has estimated the $8 million project would create a new two-lane road that can handle industrial traffic projected as the area develops.

“The county hired a consultant to look at the two-anda-half miles of road, and how we could pay for the construction,” Cassem said at Tuesday’s Grundy County Board meeting. “The county can’t

recapture the expense, but a village or city can.”

The intergovernmental agreement, along with a memorandum of understanding, will need to be passed by all governmental entities involved to create a legal way for the county to recapture the cost of the road, which will service the properties along each side of the road.

The 1,900 acres that line the road belong to two different municipalities: The east side of the road is Minooka, the west side belongs to Morris.

Cassem said it’s estimated the county will need about $4,600 per acre as an impact fee to pay for the construction.

Roads LLC, located in Naperville, is the developer looking at the land for proposed mixed uses. Minooka Village Administrator Dan Duffy said Minooka is working with Morris on the agreement and that Minooka just has some minor adjustments to the existing language it would like to see.

“Hopefully, we will have something by the end of the month,” Duffy said. “These documents don’t happen over night, we have to look to the future when doing a long-term agreement.”

He said Minooka has always had a good relationship with the state’s attorney office and with Rudman, so he doesn’t expect this project to be any different.

Family and friends are organizing a benefit for Morris resident Todd Enger, who is struggling to recover from a massive stroke two days after Christmas.

“Todd is very loved and very respected in the community and here,” said Pastor Lu Bettisch, of Peach Lutheran Church, where Enger is a member. “He is our confirmation and youth coordinator and has been for a long time. ... If anything ever needs to be done around here, Todd is the one to do it. We are still finding ‘Todd holes,’ of things he used to do that we never really thought about, like changing the color of things that hang off the altar.”

Enger’s sister, Donna Knudson, said the benefit is to help Enger and his family with medical bills and rehabilitation expenses. It was a surprise to everyone when his wife, Amy, noticed he was having some unusual symptoms on what had been an otherwise normal day. Enger had gone to his stepson’s wrestling match, then to the grocery store to buy a chicken to cook in his new smoker.

“Then he started not feeling well,” Knudson said. “Amy said he had started sweating a

lot, and he was having trouble with his left side and slurring words. She asked him if he was all right, and he said he was, but then he started slurring his words.”

He was taken to the hospital, where it was determined Enger had a hemorrhagic stroke, or a brain bleed stroke.

Surgeons opened his skull to relieve the pressure in his brain that day, and it was touch and go for him for a time much longer than the family had hoped.

“The prognosis was critical,” Knudson said, “but he went through surgery very well. It was a few days before he could move his fingers and toes.”

Enger eventually went to a center in Chicago where he received physical, speech and occupational therapy. He returned home last week.

“That was a big relief when he came home,” Knudson said.

“He’s a little mobile now, in a wheelchair, and he’s learning to use a walker. He can feed himself, but he still has a lot of trouble talking. He’s got a long way to go.”

Enger probably will not be able to attend Saturday’s benefit, she said. The family is worried it might be too much for him. The benefit starts at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall. Entry is free, and donations are accepted. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m., and music by Klassic Karaoke will begin at 7 p.m.

Late Saratoga rally wins regional title

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With her volleyball team trailing 24-21 in the third game of the Class 8-3A Saratoga Regional title match against Manhattan on Thursday night, Saratoga’s Alisson Bojovic stepped to the service line.

All that, her team’s season, was riding on each of the next three serves, if she even got that many. Nerves?

Nah. “I really wasn’t that nervous,” Bojovic said. “I had confidence in my team. We were on our court and I knew we could do it.”

That they did, as the Hawks (16-6) reeled off a string of five straight points with Bojovic serving and upended Manhattan, 25-21, 18-25, 26-24, to win their second straight regional title.

The first point in the streak may have been the toughest, as the two teams staged a long rally before Manhattan was called for a lift violation to give the point to Saratoga and make the score, 24-22.

Bojovic then served an ace, and a hitting error by Manhattan brought the game to a tie score. Bojovic got another ace to make it 25-24, and when a Manhattan hit went long, bedlam broke out on the court as the Hawks claimed their crown.

“Once we tied the game, I felt like we had it,” Bojovic said. “It’s very exciting.”

The first game went back and forth, each team taking turns with the momentum.

It finally switched to Saratoga’s side for good late in the game. Manhattan took a 19-17 lead, but Bojovic got the serve back for Saratoga with a kill to make it 19-18.

Chloe Hansen then served three straight points, the first on a kill by Krista Runchey and the next two on kills by Bojovic, to give the Hawks a 21-19 lead. After the team teams traded points, Bojovic served the game out, with Olivia Schultz getting a kill for the final point.

Each morning as I drive to work I usually listen to the traffic report and catch the top news stories for the day. Several times this week I heard about the driving service Uber.

Some of you may not know about this company, so let me get you caught up. Uber is a service that connects drivers with riders. The easiest way I can think to describe it is like an online taxi service. The kick here is, anyone can be a driver with proper background checks and driving records.

If you want to make some extra money, you sign up to be a driver. If you need a ride, you use the app on your phone and someone will come pick you up.

Naturally, this story has made the news because of all the possibilities of having a really creepy driver or passenger, but that is beside the point. This ride service

spiked my curiosity. I wonder how this might apply to the outdoors?

On an almost weekly basis I run across people who want to talk about fishing. With the warming trend in the weather, these conversations have become almost a daily thing.

One common thread runs through most of the chitchat: people are always looking for someone to go fishing with.

This may be for one of several reasons. Sometimes a person just doesn’t want to fish by themselves. I’ll admit fishing with a friend or family member is much more satisfying than going out on your own.

People may also be looking for someone to go fishing with because they don’t have a boat. Sure, there are lots of great places to go shore fishing, but there is something about being in a boat that makes the experience different.

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers The last reason I hear a lot is the desire to fish someplace new. In fact, in our area, there are many locations that are just off-limits to the general public. You have to know someone or be a guest of theirs to get to some of the awesome lakes around us.

To put it plainly, a lot of people of all ages are looking for someone to go fishing with. They are all waiting for that person to ask them.

On the other end of things are the guys with boats. There are multiple times each summer when my kids are busy and I am looking for someone to go spend the afternoon on the lake with me. You would be surprised how hard it is to find someone to go. Getting two individual schedules to

line up is a near impossibility.

So why not develop a service like Uber, but for anglers? Aside from the cost to develop the app and the technical jargon, I think it would work.

There is a demand on both sides. With Uber, the riders pay the service and the drivers receive their payments from Uber. Think about that.

I’m not talking about a guide service. Guides are professionals and can help you catch more fish. I’m just talking about a service to find someone to go fishing with. The fee might be $20.

The possibilities for this could reach into other outdoor sports as well. Maybe it is a way kayakers could hook up and go on an afternoon excursion together? Maybe birdwatchers could find this technology useful?

I hesitate to mention hunting. There is something about inviting a stranger with

a gun that makes me a little nervous. I like to personally know the people I hunt with.

Although, there is a current service, called www.huntbutler.com, that is matching landowners with customers from across the nation.

The possibilities are almost endless. Am I going to develop this? No. I’m a little short on cash to make it happen. Plus, I have too many irons in the fire anyway. Maybe you will create it? I do think that something like this will happen before too long. The technology is headed that way.

I know the questions and what-ifs are many, but imagine the ability to fish new water, learn new techniques, and meet new people with similar interests, all with the click of an app on your phone.

Just imagine.

Defensive line to start forming up around a 3-4 One one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand.

Coach John Fox broke up the pace of Wednesday’s verbal game of pepper with a pause that lasted almost four seconds. On a day when he and general manager Ryan Pace defended the retaining of Jay Cutler and the trading of Brandon Marshall, it was a question about 3-4 defensive ends – as in, do the Bears have one on their roster? – that stopped him.

“Again, that’s really hard for me to answer right now,” Fox finally said. “We still have two big periods to improve and add to a football team.

Then we’ll stack them up and let them compete when we get that opportunity.”

The Bears don’t have to fill out a depth chart in March.

Trying to do so would be folly anyway. The Bears’ defensive

roster will make a lot more sense after free agency and the draft are completed.

In a 3-4 base, the defensive ends line up on the tackles’ outside shoulders. They need to be heavier – at least 285 pounds – and more immovable than in a 4-3 but aren’t expected to handle a pass-rush load the way ends do in other schemes. The Bears don’t have many of those. We know that Lamarr Houston, whom Pace said was doing well in recovering from his torn ACL, will line up at outside linebacker.

“What he ends up being – like I said, until we hit the grass, we can’t evaluate it,” Fox said. “It’s really kind of too early to say, but he’ll start as an outside linebacker.”

He’ll join Willie Young and Jared Allen in making the transition to outside linebacker – a position the Bears just paid the Ravens’ Pernell McPhee $38.75 million to fill.

For one, Pace and Fox still

need to see how some of the players they inherited will adapt to the new scheme – at defensive line and linebacker.

“There’s guys, just because they’ve been in a 4-3, that can still play in a 3-4,” Pace said.

“So that’s part of the evaluation that we’ve been doing.

There’s players that are currently in place that I feel can play efficiently in a 3-4 defense.”

Safety Antrel Rolle said a major reason for signing with the Bears was because he liked the way defensive coordinator Vic Fangio deployed his safeties. He could soon be joined by another safety, the Chiefs’ Ron Parker, who visited Halas Hall. Or perhaps former Buccaneers linebacker Mason Foster. McPhee can aid in the team’s transition; he said the Ravens’ defense was similar to the one Fangio ran with the 49ers the past four seasons.

“The scheme will be easy for me to adjust to,” he said.

“And I look forward to helping

some of the guys who might have a harder time adjusting to it.”

Then there’s this – Fangio’s 3-4 is simply a base set.

His 49ers played a nickel or dime defense more than half the time the past two years.

In those sub packages, the defense becomes, essentially, a 4-3. That would fit Allen better and would allow the versatile McPhee to move inside when needed.

“When you talk about a 3-4 base, we’re in sub 60 percent

of the time, so you’re in a fourman front usually in those defenses anyway,” Pace said.

“So it presents a lot of opportunities for a lot of different players.”

The Bears will spend the next two months collecting those players. Fox said that, typically, he assigns pass rushers a particular half of the field, then allows them to “define what their roles are and what their strengths are.”

He’ll do just that.

Twenty-one years after “Fast Track” was used, the U.S. trade deficit is $912 billion, nearly $700 billion higher. When President Obama created a trade deal with South Korea in 2011, the trade deficit with South Korea jumped 50 percent; that’s a loss of 50,000 good jobs.

I do not understand why

again undermine the middle-class economic agenda that the president says he desires to be his legacy.

I urge Americans to contact their congressman, their senator and the president to protest yet another agreement that will increase corporate profits at the expense of workers, consumers, farmers, and communities.

It is time to protest agreements that represent the preferences of economic elites while destroying the middle class.

The lost life and legacy of a unique young priest As a high school dropout, Matthew Baker worked the graveyard shift at a gas station because he wanted time to read.

So he read for seven years, digging into philosophy, literature, history and poetry.

This helped steer him away from his teenaged atheism and eventually toward Orthodox Christianity and the priesthood. He never graduated from college.

But there was marriage and a large family to love.

Then a seminary accepted Baker, and then another, leading to a Master of Divinity from St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Seminary in Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Massachusetts. This led to Fordham University doctoral work in theology, history and philosophy, and a dissertation that was nearly done – allowing him to finally be ordained in 2014 and, this January, to move to his first parish.

Seraphim Danckaert of the Orthodox Christian Network in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, quickly opened a GoFundMe. com drive to support Baker’s family. “We expected to rely on his counsel for years, for our children to be taught by him, to read his books and for his mature voice to be one which transcended our own tradition. ... The unexpectedly large outpouring of love in the wake of his death is proof that he was already doing that. But so much more has been lost.”

Truth is, this man’s approach to life was truly radical in this age of narrow academia niches, stressed Father Eugen Pentiuc of Holy Cross seminary, who knew Baker as a student and as a research colleague.

“Matthew was crazy about theology, a total idealist about studying theology. ... But he wanted to learn history and philosophy and art and everything else,” Pentiuc said.

“I don’t know anyone else who read so much and absorbed so much, so soon. It was going to

take him 10 or 15 years to fully synthesize what he knew and to find his mature voice.”

Friends joked that they could say “Go!” and challenge Baker to connect random subjects – such as rock band Duran Duran, genetics term “GMOs,” and 4th century heresy Apollinarianism – and “he would come up with authentically deep links between them,” said Damick.

“This is how Father Matthew will now be introduced to the world,” said Damick.

“Yes, people will read his books. ... But rather than a brilliant 50-year academic career, people will hear about him as a Christian, a husband, a father and a priest. His legacy will be all of us who loved him and are determined to keep his legacy alive.”

After you have decided, also look at the South hand. West leads the heart queen against six spades. How should South plan the play?

The North hand is perfect for a four-club splinter bid. This shows at least four-card spade support and game-going values with a singleton (or void) in clubs. Without this agreement, North should make the partnership’s game-forcing raise; two no-trump is popular today.

The splinter bid would surprise South, since he also has a singleton club, but he would probably recover sufficiently to use some form of Blackwood before settling into six spades.

After West leads the heart queen, South has two possible losers (one heart and one diamond) and only 11 guaranteed tricks (six spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club).

Declarer must score a third diamond trick -- how?

The right technique is to lead twice toward the hand with the two honors. So, South takes the first trick, draws trumps ending in the dummy, and plays a diamond to his king. After that wins, he returns to dummy with a trump and leads another low diamond. When the ace pops up, declarer’s 12th trick has been established.

What if West could capture the diamond king with the ace? Then South would need diamonds 3-3 (or a very unlikely heart-diamond squeeze). **

So-called ‘ancient grains’ are nutritional powerhouses Dear Doctor K: I keep hearing about “ancient grains.” What are they? Are they healthier than other grains?

Dear Reader: The term “ancient grains” may be a bit of a misnomer. These grains and seeds are not necessarily older than “modern” grains such as oats and wheat. But they have remained closer to their original form over thousands of years of changing farming practices.

Over the past few years, ancient grains have become quite popular. These days, you can find a wide variety of ancient grains in grocery stores and online.

What sets ancient grains apart from modern grains?

Modern wheat is heavily

In contrast, most ancient grains are eaten as whole grains. Whole grains are nutritional powerhouses with many health benefits. Eating whole grains, for example, lowers the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Here’s a closer look at ancient grains you may want to check out: AMARANTH contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. It’s also gluten-free and takes less than 20 minutes to cook.

TEFF is a versatile grain with a mild flavor. Teff provides more calcium than any other grain. It is gluten-free. It also helps to prevent spikes in blood sugar after meals.

FREEKEH comes from green wheat and has a nutty and smoky flavor. It is higher in protein and fiber than brown rice.

KAMUT is high in protein and fiber. It is richer in minerals than modern wheat. Kamut can be cooked like rice, or

ground and substituted for wheat flour in baked goods.

SORGHUM is a gluten-free cereal grain high in antioxidants and other compounds important in heart health. Sorghum can be a substitute for wheat flour in most baked goods. Or it can be boiled like rice.

MILLET is the general term for a group of small-seeded grains. Millet is rich in antioxidants and magnesium, and is gluten-free.

QUINOA is a complete protein, a rich source of potassium and is gluten-free. You can use it to replace your favorite grain-based side dishes.

The resurgent interest in ancient grains (or whole grains) has stimulated the food industry. In addition,

the rise of grocery stores that specialize in foods deemed “healthier” has made these grains more available. Also, more restaurants are featuring ancient grains.

Finally, there are a growing number of cookbooks and online recipes dedicated to ancient grains. That makes it easy to translate theory into practice: Ancient grains are healthy foods, and the recipes make delicious meals.
