Arlene J. Campbell, age 90, of Marseilles, passed away Tuesday March 10, 2015, at her home.

Born: Nov. 16, 1922; in Ottawa, IL Died: Feb. 28, 2015; in LaPalma, CA Eleanor Caputo, age 92, of Seneca, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015, at LaPalma Intercommunity Hospital in LaPalma, California, where she resided in the winter.

Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Seneca with Rev. Carolyn Lukasick officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Saturday, one hour prior to her funeral at First United Methodist Church in Seneca. She will be buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. Osborne-Nelson Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements.

Eleanor was born November 16, 1922 in Ottawa, Illinois to George and Kathryn (Brown) Tattersall.

She was a 1940 graduate of Seneca High School. She married Glenn Caputo of Marseilles on August 3, 1941; he passed away February 18, 1989.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where in the early years she taught Sunday School, she was active in the Methodist Women’s Auxiliary, and sang in the church choir.

She was the church secretary for years then worked for Caselli Insurance in both the Seneca and Marseilles offices until she retired.

She was very active in her hometown, where she spent most of her life, volunteering as an Election Judge, a cook at the Seneca Grade School, and a chairperson for

POLICE REPORTS numerous activities her children were involved in. She loved to play canasta and bowling. She also belonged to a card club and bowling league for many years.

She is survived by her children, Glenn (Kelly) Caputo of Cypress CA., Karen (David) Krafft of Ottawa, and Kevin (Terri) Caputo of Morris; ten grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Holman of Fort Worth, TX; two sister-in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn; one son, Brad Caputo; two sisters, Leorna and Betty; and two brothers, Robert and William.

KATHY JO LESSARD

Born: Dec. 4, 1951; in Marion, IL Died: March 11, 2015; in Morris, IL Kathy Jo Lessard, age 63, of Morris, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her bedside on Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Born December 4, 1951 in Marion, Indiana, she was the daughter of William and Martha (Johns) Chambers.

She and her family moved to Morris in 1962 so her father could work in the paper mill. She attended Morris public schools and graduated from Morris High School with the Class of 1970. After graduation, she married Monty Lessard and the two of them moved to Florida where they had one daughter.

Kathy returned to the Morris area and was employed by several of

the area restaurants, Sis’s Drive-In and Maria’s Restaurant where she was a waitress. She also worked for Dresden Power Station and later for Kraft Foods where she would retire.

Growing up, she loved to come to town with friends to “buzz the gut”.

She was an avid Morris Redskins fan and enjoyed being a member of 4-H belonging to the Stitch ‘n Time Club. Kathy especially enjoyed traveling with her mother all over the United States.

Survived by two sisters, Lisa (Kevin) Wren of Morris, Lori (Chris) Urton of Bloomington, and one brother, William K (Jeffery Bequeaith) Chambers of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be made in Kathy’s name to St. Jude Children’s Foundation or Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home. A Celebration of Kathy’s Life will begin at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Yandell officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Last June they opened the doors to their new state-ofthe-art facility in Minooka, where their tool and die and high-speed punch press operations serve the automotive, electronic and medical fields.

“The owners Lee and Kathy Hutchinson and their son Ben wasted no time getting involved in Grundy County,” said Nancy Ammer, CEO of Grundy Economic Development Council, at the annual awards dinner Wednesday night at Chapin’s East in Minooka.

MINOOKA – Brothers David and John Bankowski started their business selling horse products to farms and stables in the Ottawa area with no store front.

Fast forward 11 years and the brothers own their flagship store, Brothers Country Supply, in Ottawa, with a second location in Morris and a third location in Oswego in the works.

“About two and a half years ago we were looking for a second location and we liked Morris a lot,” David Bankowski said Wednesday afternoon. “It has a strong community, the people are very loyal. It’s hard to put into words, but it’s the people and their support that drew us here.”

The Bankowskis were presented with the Entrepreneurs of the Year award from the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday night at the Grundy County Annual Celebration, hosted by the chamber and the Grundy Economic Development Council (GEDC).

Over 240 investors, business and municipal leaders along with guests were in attendance at the annual dinner at Chapin’s East Banquets in Minooka.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter welcomed those in attendance, saying the county couldn’t ask for better partners in retraining and attracting business to Grundy County than the GEDC and the chamber.

“I think everyone here would agree with me when I say we must leave a better Grundy County for future generations,” Welter said.

“With the leadership and support of both the GEDC and the Chamber of Commerce we’re working toward just that.”

The brothers started their business with the philosophy that they are here to serve everyone.

In addition to the horse supplies they started out with, they now sell food for any kind of animal you may need to feed.

They have even ordered tiger food for a tiger rescue that called ahead as it was transporting a tiger.

“No matter where you are on budget or beliefs, we have something for you,” David Bankowski said. “The position of our stores is we sell to anyone, not just the boutique customer.”

The brothers also give back. They provide free food to police dogs for their entire life, even after retirement.

They provide this service to K-9 units in Grundy, LaSalle and Kendall counties.

LOCAL NEWS County to buy flyover software Purchase will help departments view changes to land faster

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Land Use and Assessor will be splitting the cost of new software that will enable both offices to view changes to land parcels within the county in an easier and more timely fashion.

Dave Ostrander, with the county’s technology department, presented at Monday’s Grundy County Finance Committee meeting about how the requested software will work.

“The software will identify if a building has changed in any way. It also indicates a new structure or if something is now missing,” Ostrander said.

The Pictomery Change Finder software will cost the county $10,000 and will be paid for with $5,000 from the Assessor’s budget and $5,000 from the Land Use budget over the next two years. The software will integrate with the county’s existing Geographic Information System.

The purchase would re-

quire additional funds to the Land Use budget, which the finance committee agreed to spend.

Ostrander said the decision to purchase the software needed to be done soon as the company is scheduling a flyover of the county later this month.

The county approved spending for the initial purchase in 2007 at a cost of $318,000 when they joined with Will County for cost-savings on the program, which provides photos of the county. The photos the county receives provide multiple views of each parcel in the county. Many of those pictures are generated with oblique photography.

Unlike usual aerial photographs, which are taken from directly above the subject parcel, the oblique photos are taken from an angle, allowing parcel details not viewable from overhead to be evident, like the location of gates in a fence line.

Ostrander said originally the county was going to have flyovers every three years, but the last flyover took place in 2009 and will serve as the baseline.

With a flyover scheduled for this month, he said it was the right time to add the analyzing software. Land Use

Director Heidi Miller said Wednesday the software will help in several ways.

“We can see a structure is being built and enforce permits required if they have not been pulled,” Miller said.

“Sometimes we hear from a neighbor that something has been built illegally and we need to substantiate that before we send a letter to the resident.”

Previously, that would mean driving to the location and comparing it to previous photographs of the area.

With the new software, staff will be able to see immediately if there have been changes to the buildings on the property, which can save staff time and money, Miller said.

The software also can be used by the assessor’s office to see if additional buildings have been built or if there has been an addition to a structure that may not be represented on the tax bills. The software not only outlines the changes, but also gives a square footage number for what has been added or removed.

Committee member Dick Joyce said it’s a fairness issue.

“If you are paying your fair share on your property others should too,” Joyce said at the meeting.

English teacher adds reading specialist to duties

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community High School board has approved the assignment of Amy Carr as a part-time reading specialist for the 2015-16 school year.

Currently a teacher of freshmen English and reading, senior English and driver’s education, Carr received a Master of Science degree with a reading specialist certification from University of St. Francis in June 2014.

Carr’s additional assignment was approved at Monday’s board meeting.

“We’ve seen that other high school districts have reading specialists and other similar positions and identified it as something that can really help our students,” Carr said Wednesday.

The change comes at no extra cost for parents or the school, as Carr’s schedule is simply being adjusted. No additional personnel will be hired. Specific duties and responsibilities are not yet set in stone, but District 101

Superintendent Pat Halloran said Carr will spend two or three periods of the school day in this role. The position likely will include co-teaching classes in all grades with an emphasis on freshmen, meeting with other staff members or developing plans for reading improvement.

“We’ve come to realize there’s not much emphasis on improving reading in high schools,” Halloran said Tuesday. “Reading is one of those things we just expect students to do well around third grade. After that, how much emphasis are schools really putting on reading improvement?”

Carr said there’s a misconception that English teachers teach reading. “It’s kind of assumed in high school that every student can read well,” she said. “But we teach English without knowing which students may be struggling coming in. We can identify which students are struggling, then form a plan for improvement.”

Earth Expo returns to Saratoga school

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The 24th annual Grundy County Earth Expo returns to Saratoga Elementary School on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

John Davis of the University of Illinois Extension, Grundy County Unit, said 38 exhibitors will be at the event, including AkzoNobel, Grundy County Soil & Water Conservation District, LyondellBasell and the Grundy County Farm Bureau. Davis said the focus of the event in recent years has shifted toward the services provided by many of the companies.

“The goal is to give the opportunity for the people of Grundy County to see what many of these businesses do scientifically,” Davis said.

Work to start on Blodgett Road at I-55

By SHAW MEDIA CHANNAHON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that work on the Blodgett Road over Interstate 55 Bridge and Blodgett Road over Grant Creek Bridge near Channahon is set to start March 18, weather permitting.

To complete the work of removing the bridge over I-55 and reconstructing the bridge over Grant Creek, Blodgett Road will be closed between I-55 and Grant Creek until

the project is completed at the end of September, according to a news release from IDOT. The posted detour will direct Blodgett Road traffic south on I-55 to Lorenzo Road, west to Will Road, north to Blodgett Road, and to the reverse route.

In addition to the work on Blodgett Road over I-55, the bridge over Grant Creek will be reconstructed and new pavement realigning the west frontage road connection to Blodgett Road will be built, according to the news release.

Later in the spring, nighttime lane closures will be required on I-55 for completion of the project. Full stops of traffic for up to 15 minutes midnight and 5 a.m. also will be necessary to complete removal of the structure. Motorists should allow extra time while the detour is in effect.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to the signs for the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment in the area.

Volunteers see life differently during St. Francis University trip out of country

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Every time Kori Beck of Morris attends a mission trip she enjoys giving to those in need, but she also grows as a person.

Her recent trip to the Philippines was no different, the 23-year-old graduate from the University of St. Francis in Joliet said.

One of the best things about the trips is how the work changes her.

“Every time I come back from a trip, I come back a changed person,” Beck said.

“A person that I like even more. We all get caught up living here, with technology and all that. Going there, you see how people live and you see things differently. I try to live simpler. I feel like I donate half my clothes whenever I come home from one of those trips.”

From Dec. 27 through Jan. 10, five group leaders and 22 students traveled to the Philippines to complete mission work through the Diocese of Joliet’s Partnership in Mission program. The work included building and painting homes.

Several students previously participated in mission trips, and some were new to the experience.

But as the students were blessing others with their work, spending time with the residents blessed them in turn with a change of perspective.

One of those students was Kristina Mallari, 20, of Plainfield, a University of Illinois at Chicago student. Mallari had never done mission work, but was interested in this trip partly because of her Filipino roots.

Mallari had only gone to the Philippines once – for a family funeral – and she wanted to experience the culture and daily life.

The downside was that the trip was scheduled over university break and she had made plans with friends.

After spending time with the villagers during the weekand-a-half trip, Mallari said

she gained a more altruistic way of thinking.

“It was unbelievable,” Mallari said. “I am thankful that I went and realized I was being selfish before leaving.”

Kamille Martinez, 20, of Carpentersville, a student at Lewis University in Romeoville, said the trip helped her understand how much she took for granted.

“I’ve become more appreciative of things,” Martinez said. “I mean, here, we take a shower easily. We don’t think anything of it. But there, they have to pump the well for the water, and then dump a bucket over their heads for a shower.”

But the most rewarding part about working within the community was the interaction with the children, Beck added.

On the first or second day of the trip, when collecting rocks to build the foundation of a house, Beck recalled, the kids helped fill up the bags and carry them back to the site.

“It was really cool to have three or four kids walking with me,” Beck said, “and then we would race back.”

Justin Kovalsky, 22, of Bolingbrook, a Benedictine University student, said he was struck by Filipinos’ hospitality, and the sense of peace he felt while on the trip.

Although Kovalsky had never traveled out of the United States prior to this trip, he said he wants to complete more mission work all over

the world.

“I want to try to help people in any way possible,” he said.

Mission work, Kovalsky believes, can be a challenge, both emotionally and physically.

“You have to sacrifice a lot of things. Your sleep. What you eat. Your time. Your physical resources are all going to be used up,” Kovalsky said.

But the experience was well worth it, he added.

“The hardest part was leaving,” Kovalsky said.

Slammers to host job fair Saturday morning

NEIGHBORS Souper Bowl of Caring tackles hunger More than $6,000 collected for We Care charity agency MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County is pleased to announce the winners of the 2015 Grundy County Souper Bowl of Caring.

Peace Lutheran Church Youth Group collected $1,390 in the Youth Division of the fundraising competition, coming in first for the third year in a row.

Immaculate Conception School came in second with $733 and First Baptist Church third with $554.

The Business Division winner was Dairy Queen, with a total collection of $661. Culver’s came in second with $274 and Corleone’s third with $182.

The total of this year’s drive was $6,451, according to a news release from We Care.

The Grundy County Souper Bowl of Caring harnesses the energy of the NFL Super Bowl to raise awareness of hunger in the community.

Starting in December, containers were placed at businesses, schools and churches

throughout Grundy County to encourage donations to fight hunger.

The largest collections in the Youth Division, which includes schools and churches, and the Business Division receive the traveling Grundy County Souper Bowl of Caring trophy to proudly display for a year.

Not only did Peace Lutheran Church’s Youth Group collect the most money, but they also collected food for We Care’s food pantry.

The youth group also assisted with and attended the church’s Trivia Challenge event that raised money for the Souper Bowl.

We Care would like to thank all those who helped with the Souper Bowl of Caring, according to the release.

Whether an organization was able to collect a lot or a little, participation always increases awareness of the needs of those facing hunger right here in Grundy County.

Channahon beats Coal City for regional title

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON — The last time Coal City and Channahon’s eighth-grade volleyball teams played, the match went three games. Both teams expected another tough battle when they met again Wednesday night in the championship match of the IESA Class 8-4A Channahon Regional.

They weren’t disappointed.

Channahon breezed to a 2510 win in the first game and led, 19-12, in the second. Then, Coal City caught fire and rallied to take the second game, 27-25, setting up the do-or-die third game. Channahon (22-1) emerged with a 25-19 win in the third game to advance to Monday night’s Coal City Sectional, where it will play the winner of tonight’s Troy-Joliet Washington match at 6 p.m.

“We knew it would be a dogfight,” Channahon coach Char Roberts said. “It was the last time we played them, too. And, the sectional is on their floor, so we knew they wanted to get there and play the sectional at home.”

It didn’t start out like a dogfight. The Indians went on a 7-1 run after the game was tied at 3 in the early moments to take a 10-4 lead and remained in control the rest of the game.

Shannon Smith took over serving duties when Channahon led 16-10, and no one else served the rest of the way.

Smith started off with a string of four straight aces, then Channahon got a point on a Warrior hitting error. Another ace by Smith and a kill

by Cayla Kenney made it 2310. Coal City was called for a double-hit to make it 24-10 and Smith ended it with an ace.

Coal City refused to go quietly. The Warriors, who finish with a 19-5 record, jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the strength of four service points from Sydney Wren. Channahon came back and tied it at 5 before getting a 19-12 lead.

After an ace by Smith made it 19-12, Coal City got a kill from Brooke Chapman and an ace by Wren to make it 19-14.

Coal City eventually took a 24-22 lead and was one point from victory, but Channahon scored the next three points to go up 25-24. Coal City got a point to tie it on a net violation, and then got two straight kills from Olivia Skubic to win the game.

In the third game, the Channahon servers took control again, as the Indians collected five aces. Coal City rode the momentum of the second-game win to a 6-2 lead, but Channahon rallied and took a 7-6 lead on an ace by Kelly Kotowski.

Coal City then grabbed a 9-7 lead before Channahon got the lead for good when Nicole Kijowski went on a four-point serving run to make it 13-9. A five-point run by Smith made it 21-12. Coal City made it 24-19

“We have a nice tradition started,” Roberts said. “These girls got second in the state last year as seventh graders and they want to get to state

Morris graduates eye competitive Cardinals, Braves positions this year STAFF REPORTS For big-league baseball players, it’s spring training time. For veterans, it’s time to get the muscles loosened up, get back in shape and prepare for the long season ahead.

For young players, it’s time to show the big club what they’ve got and that they deserve to make The Show as well. A pair of local pitchers are trying to just that during these next few weeks.

Mike Foltynewicz of Minooka, who was traded from Houston to Atlanta over the winter, is vying for a spot in the Braves’ starting rotation during camp in Orlando.

He has only pitched in one game so far, and it was a game he started. He went 12⁄3 innings, allowing four hits, two walks and an earned run while striking out two.

There are currently two spots in the Atlanta starting rotation open, and Foltynewicz is competing with Wandy Rodriguez, Eric Stults, Manny Banuelos and Cody Martin for one of those two spots.

Last year, in a brief call-up with Houston, Foltynewicz appeared in 16 games, all in relief. He finished with an 0-1 record, a 5.30 ERA and 14 strikeouts against seven walks in 182⁄3 innings.

Meanwhile, in the St. Louis Cardinals’ camp in Jupiter, Fla., Morris graduate Zach Petrick continues to impress.

Petrick, who was the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2013, has had two relief appearances thus far this spring.

He has pitched four innings and hasn’t allowed a hit or run. He has walked one and struck out five. Last year, Petrick split his time between Class AA and AAA, spending the majority at AAA Memphis.

Local update: Morris graduate Tim Smyk, currently a freshman at Illinois Wesleyan University, has played in all three of the Titans’ games this season, starting two of them. In a pair of games against Blackburn College, Smyk started the first game at first base and the second at designated hitter. He has yet to get a hit in nine atbats.

At University of St. Francis, Morris grad Kjeld Torkelson is hitting .192 for the Saints so far. He has started seven of the eight games he has played.

Two of his five hits have been doubles and he has three RBIs. He has also appeared in two games as a pitcher.

Also for St. Francis, Coal City’s Dan Darling sports a 1.80 ERA in two relief appearances. At Illinois State, Minooka graduate and true fresh- three hits, a walk and two man Mitch Vogrin has a 6.00 earned runs without a strikeERA after two appearances. No surprise: No Chris Sale for opener

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Chris Sale’s very slim and none chances of starting Opening Day after he broke his right foot jumping off the back of his truck on Feb. 27 were downgraded to none Wednesday when executive vice president Ken Williams told MLB Network that it isn’t going to happen.

“We’re going to take him on a little slower road, but it looks like he could make the April 12 start,” Williams said.

“Now whether we’re going to want him to make that start would be dependent on just how well he comes along.”

Sale, who finished third in Cy Young Award voting last

season, sustained an avulsion fracture and was ruled out for three weeks, a deflating development in the aftermath of the Sox’s productive offseason that perked up their fan base.

It seemed unlikely he would have enough time to get his arm ready for the opener, so this comes as no surprise, although manger Robin Ventura has kept a tiny window open saying that would be highly unlikely. That window closed Wednesday.

“It’s not going to be his time to start the opener,” Ventura said after the Sox played the Texas Rangers to a 4-4 Cactus League tie at Camelback Ranch. “We were waiting to see how his foot was and the timetable doesn’t give him a

chance to do that.

“The last thing you want to do is put him out there when he’s really not ready. It’s unfair for us to push it in a way that would jeopardize him further into the season. This is a way to have a more realistic target date.”

The realistic target always was first two weeks of the season. Jose Quintana, or perhaps Jeff Samardzija, will start opening day instead.

Ventura said he hadn’t discussed it yet with his pitcher of choice.

Williams also talked up lefthander Carlos Rodon, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, which can be taken to believe the Sox haven’t ruled out having him on the opening day roster regardless of service

time issues that could accelerate his path to free agency.

Starting the year with the Sox and going back to the minors wouldn’t be out of the question, either.

But “he looks like a big leaguer,” said Williams, suggesting Rodon could go north with the team in April if his presence gives the Sox their best chance to win. “April wins are just as important as wins in September.”

Hours later, though, Rodon struggled in the first inning of his second start, allowing three runs on four hits and a wild pitch.

He left after throwing 42 pitches, 26 for strikes, and allowing three runs over 21⁄3 innings. He struck out one and walked one.

“Baseball,” Rodon said.

“That’s why they’re major league hitters. A couple good pitches, couple bad pitches, some things don’t go your way, some things go your way, and that’s the way it is.

I left the ball up, and they hit the ball hard.”

Numerous scenarios remain in play for Rodon, including filling the vacancy spot in the rotation – although the Sox wouldn’t need a fifth starter till April 12 because of off days – beginning the season in the bullpen or starting at AAA Charlotte.

“Glad [the rough outing happened] here, he can move off from it,” Ventura said. “He came back and battled after that. I liked the way he goes back after it.”

Maddon expects serious response to comedy of errors

“My impression has been that the work has been great, but we’re not good at fundamentals in the game,” manager Joe Maddon said after running his squad through extra drills before regular work Wednesday morning.

So much for being able to recognize Will Ferrell without a scorecard Thursday when the “Anchorman” star joins the Cubs in their game against the Los Angeles Angels as part of a one-day, five-game HBO show/ stunt in which Ferrell plans to play briefly for all 10 teams.

“Physical mistakes are part of the game. Mental mistakes have no part in this game. So if we’re going to change the culture here, they have to understand how – when you show up at the ballpark every day – it’s not about survival, it’s about winning.”

Joe Maddon, Cubs manager figures to amount to little more than piling on with the comic relief.

Maddon’s observations of the first week of games essentially underscore the hardest part of a team-building process that involves relying on a kiddie core of prospects to develop at generally the same time.

The natural instinct to think about how to perform well

enough to “survive” with a bigleague job often overrides the more important need to stay focused on little things such as basic communication, awareness on the bases, hitting situations, anticipation in the field, Maddon said.

“It’s impossible to really win with a bunch of guys who get caught in that mode where they’re just trying to stay there and not make mistakes,” he said.

“That’s beautiful. That’s sexy. That’s cool,” Maddon said. “But I prefer the non-sexy components that nobody really bears down on during the course of the game that really help you to win.

“The part that I cannot cope with standing in the dugout is when you’re not a good fundamental team. That bothers me. And that can be changed.

I don’t care about your experience level; you can do these little things well and right. That’s where we’re at right now.”

It seemed to take for one day at least. Third baseman Mike Olt made a sharp play on a slow roller for a close-out in the third and nearly had another out with a diving stop in the fourth in Wednesday’s game.

Shortstop Starlin Castro stayed with a tough hop to get an out in the third and range deep up the middle, then spun and threw a split second late for a spectacular out in the fourth.

And prospect Albert Almora had the catch of the day in the outfield, robbing Enrique Her-

nandez of extra bases in the seventh with an over-the-shoulder, sliding catch at the warning track.

“I’ll defend our guys’ work.

Tremendous. Tremendous,” Maddon said. “But (until Wednesday) in games there’s been a disconnect in their work and how we play the game fundamentally. We’ve got to get rid of that disconnect.

“You can’t create magic – you don’t deserve magic – until you play the game properly. It should not come your way. And it won’t come your way. But if you play the game properly, then all of a sudden, these little things start rolling in your direction and you start expecting them to happen on a daily basis because you’ve earned it.”

Expect more fundamental drills daily, to the point of redundancy, over the next week or more, said Maddon, who plans to pull back for another big-picture look at the issue.

“I’m hoping to see improvement in 10 days,” he said, “and then after that have a window there going into the season, where you can really fine tune things.”

Salaries illustrate state problem SHAW MEDIA EDITORIAL The headline on the Chicago Sun-Times report read: “The $100,000 Club.”

It wasn’t a report on inflated state pensions. It wasn’t a report on the vendors owed money by the state.

It was a report on state employees and how much money they made in 2014.

Among the report’s findings: One in 10 state workers made six figures last year, and almost 700 employees made more than former Gov. Pat Quinn’s $177,412 salary. Most of those almost 700 employees were judges, but the list also included prison guards and nurses.

Even House Speaker Michael Madigan’s chief of staff, Timothy Mapes, made more than Quinn at $193,531. In fact, that’s more than double Madigan’s state salary.

In all, Illinois taxpayers paid nearly $4.8 billion in salaries to 82,104 full-time, parttime and contractual workers on the state payroll.

age of the state’s budget, but all the dollars add up. Some of these salaries clearly help illustrate and contribute to Illinois’ larger financial issue: The state has a spending problem. It doesn’t have a revenue problem.

Other items of interest from the SunTimes’ report: • Robert S. Rupnik, chief investment officer for the state Teachers’ Retirement System, was the highest-paid employee at $446,875.

TRS is the pension fund for suburban and downstate public educators. Five TRS employees made more than Quinn.

• Of the 682 employees who made more than Quinn, 81 percent of them were not members of a labor union.

• There were 8,854 state workers who made more than $100,000. Of them, 47 percent were union workers in state agencies under the governor’s control, including plumbers, child-welfare workers, highway maintainers and court-reporting supervisors.

Illinois has a spending problem. It’s long past time to fix it.

For the past two weekends, I’ve been in a seminary just outside the Center City district of Philadelphia. I’d joined volunteers wanting to be part of the welcome committee for Pope Francis (and the media hordes that will accompany him) when he visits the “City of Brotherly Love” in the fall. He’s coming to join the World Meeting of Families being held at the convention center here.

But the volunteers’ excitement doesn’t stem from the pope’s popularity. It comes from the opportunities his visit represents – for renewal, for a welcoming, not just to him but to all who have been hurt by or felt isolated from the church.

This visit comes at a time when American Catholics have had their beliefs challenged by the Obama administration, which seems bent on punishing companies and groups that object on grounds of conscience to abortion, birth control or other highly charged matters.

What a country that would be, if we truly respected religious freedom and the conscience rights of others, and helped those who provide valuable services and seek to better their communities and the world while they are in it.

We are still free to share and choose.

Shouldn’t we all want the best choices to rise to the surface, for the good of all?

It’s this backdrop to keep in mind as a controversy flares in San Francisco. Writing to the Catholic archbishop there, lawmakers insist that the morality clauses in a new handbook for Catholic high school teachers – introduced during contract negotiations and in keeping with Catholic teaching and practice – “con-

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez flict with settled areas of law and foment a discriminatory environment in the communities we serve.” The lawmakers insist that for the archdiocese to operate within the guidelines of a Catholic conscience – that is, to exercise freedom of religion – is, in fact, a civil rights violation.

The phrase “freedom to choose” comes up in the letter.

The choice in today’s West only goes so far.

It’s become a pledge of allegiance to an ideological prescription, one of a secular religion that insists on toleration only if you agree to its principles, which don’t include freedom of religion and speech so much as freedom to keep religion to yourself and for the occasional ceremonial function and speech, so long as it meets with popular agreement.

What Pope Francis has managed to do, however, is keep people interested, even as he spends over a year getting the church to focus on family life.

The World Meeting is, among other things, a celebration of and show of support for families. For his part, Pope Francis has emphasized on more than one occasion the need for politeness and gratitude, when relating to other people, spouses or oneself.

Bridge players who are flexible in their thinking tend to be efficient. Look at the North hand in this deal. North opened one club, and South responded one heart. What should North have rebid?

There is no call that perfectly describes that North hand. Four clubs would be great if it indicated three-card heart support, but it requires four cards in partner’s major. Still, it is a possible choice.

North is far too strong to rebid three clubs (although that might work out well here). My choice would be three no-trump. This shows a hand too strong for a three-club rebid; typically 18 or 19 high-card points, six-plus excellent clubs, stoppers in the unbid suits and often a singleton in responder’s suit. (This last factor is the bid’s main minus.)

After three no-trump, South will want to ask for aces – yet another problem! But if South can learn that his partner has three aces, he will jump to seven hearts, confident that he can make it by establishing dummy’s club suit.

At the table I watched this deal being played, North rebid two no-trump, indicating a balanced 18 or 19 points.

South used Gerber twice (bidding four clubs and five clubs) to ask for aces and kings, then signed off in six no-trump.

True, he could count only 12 tricks (two spades, six hearts, two diamonds and two clubs), but he should have taken a shot at seven hearts. That contract surely would have had some play -- and dummy would have been a pleasant surprise.
