ANNE L. CRATERFIELD

Born: Sept. 14, 1914; in West Frankfort, IL Died: March 9, 2015; in Morris, IL Anne Lawn Craterfield, 100 years, of Coal City passed away March 9th at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Morris, IL. Anne was born to Anton and Mabel (Sayers) Buberle on September 14, 1914, in West Frankfort, IL. She was raised and educated in Coal City, IL. She married James Craterfield on June 5th, 1937. She worked at various jobs through the years including Hymans Clothing and the Toni Garment Company as a hand sewer and sales person.

Anne then worked as the Coal City site supervisor for Grundy County Senior Services, retiring at age 85.

Anne taped an interview “WWI, on the Home” which is archived at the Coal City Public Library. She

was named “Woman of the Year” in 1994 by the Coal City GFWC Illinois Prairie State Woman’s Club.

She enjoyed quilting and playing euchre with her friends, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Anne is survived by her four children, James (Sharon) Craterfield of Coal City, Thomas Craterfield, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Hope (Stephen) Allen of Lemont and Robert (Kim) Craterfield, of Coal City. “Grandma Anne” had 10 grandchildren, Tom (Mollye) Craterfield, Danette (Dave) Wren, Tracy (Mike) Craterfield, Hilary (Kenny) Huston, Carrie Reichert, Michelle (Bobby) Ray, Amanda (Craig) Frost, Ryan (Sally) Allen, Jennifer (Jason) Brandon, and Nicole Craterfield; 20 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; and very special nieces, Pearl Wilson, Charlotte Morris, Tonita Koslowski, and Barbara Fields.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; infant daughter, Mary; and siblings, Lillian Monferdini, Charles Buberle, Barbara Bergera, Thomas (Buster) Buberle, and Emil Buberle.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington.

MARILYN F. KRUGER

Born: June 26, 1952; in Streator, IL Died: March 8, 2015; in Peoria, IL Marilyn F. Kruger, age 62, passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria IL. Born in Streator IL on June 26, 1952, Marilyn was the daughter of Lyle and Marie Masching of Dwight.

Marilyn married her first and only love, William T. Kruger Jr., on September 16, 1972, in Dwight. The Krugers made their home in rural Ransom where they farmed and raised their family.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kristen (Kirby) Woods, Washington IL and Kelly Kruger, Ransom; one son, Kurt (Kelly) Kruger, Kinsman; four grandchildren, Grant and Kate Woods and Bailey and Kenley Kruger. Also surviving are five brothers and one sister, Ken (Jan) Masching, Dwight; Irv (Lynn) Masching, Dwight; Gary (Peg) Masching, Elgin; Terry (Karen) Masching, Little Rock, AR; Madelyn Fogarty, Dwight; and Jeff (Anita) Masching, Algonquin.

In-laws include William Kruger Sr, Kinsman; Sandy (Richard) Roenfeldt, Ottawa; Linda Bookout, Kinsman; Karen (Jim) Hopp, Dayton OH; Pam (Jim) Siedentop, Ransom.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and mother-in-law, Marjorie Kruger.

A 1970 graduate of Dwight Township High School and a graduate of Joliet Junior College, Marilyn most recently worked as a teacher’s aide at Dwight Grade School.

Marilyn was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend always putting the needs of others before her own and continues to do so, even after death, by donating her organs through Gift of Hope so others might live.

She loved to create and was an artist in so many ways. Through gardening, painting, drawing, sewing, photography, and more, Marilyn always found ways to create, capture and share the beauty in life.

Marilyn was member of Kinsman’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she actively practiced her faith in God. She was deeply loved and will be forever missed.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kinsman IL. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at Sacred Heart Church, Kinsman, with Rev. John Hornicak officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, in Ransom.

New location brings more donation capacity; If you go agency needs volunteers, shelving to fill room We Care of Grundy County’s new

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Imagine moving into a new home six times the size of your last home, as well as all the possibilities and responsibilities that come with the extra space.

Such is the case for We Care of Grundy County, which opened its new facility on March 2 at 530 Bedford Road.

At the forefront for operations manager Lori Sandgren is gaining more volunteers to handle the new operations.

“We have six times the space now, but we’d like to at least double the amount of volunteers,” Sandgren said.

“It will really make this transition smooth. We need a lot of help in the clothes closet with organizing the racks and washing clothes.”

To support the clothing donations, the Grundy County Housing Authority donated washers and dryers, which were placed in a large laundry room. Neither the appliances nor the extra room were possible at the old facility, which functioned as mainly a food pantry.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility, clothing and prescription assistance. It was previously located in the Canalport Community Center on Illinois Avenue.

Less than two weeks into operating at 530 Bedford

Road, Executive Director Denise Gaska said clients are thrilled with the opportunity to find clothing – and this is just the beginning. “We can dream of new things with all this space,” Gaska said. “Our clients are already more satisfied. We have space to take bigger donations.”

One new feature is the ability to accept donations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the back of the building, there is a drop box with a keypad where donors can punch ‘1234’ and submit items.

Although it took about a year to find and purchase a new building, Gaska said when We Care moved to its previous location in 2007, the space felt small. The flood and tornadoes of 2013 shifted the process of finding a new location into top gear. “We began to see that with all these natural disasters happening, there were people who didn’t have a place to pick up clothing donations,” Gaska said.

The clothing department has sections for shoes, children’s, men and women, and a bedding section with several comforters on display. With the volume of expected inventory, We Care is hoping for a shelving donation, Gaska said.

If that happens, We Care will be more capable of handling donations that travel on 16 wheels.

“There are some great potential partnerships we can take advantage of now that we have the ability to accept

They are then allowed a certain numbers of items corresponding to the size of their family.

Volunteer Vivian Tollefsen of Coal City said that in her nine years at We Care, the new location is indicative of what volunteer work by so many can amount to.

“I’ve been to many other quality facilities and believe this is the best,” she said. “It’s phenomenal to see the growth and community help.”

More evidence of the growth can be seen in We Care’s financial planning class in classroom-like area, made possible by the extra space.

We Care has two large unused rooms in its new location, and is eagerly awaiting more volunteers and donations. Donations of new and used clothing are accepted, in addition to the food and personal care products it previously has accepted.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Cara Anderson told the Grundy County Board’s Finance Committee on Monday night that an abandoned well is improperly sealed on property owned by the county. “I’m seeking direction from the committee on how we want to handle this,” said Anderson, who is director of environmental health with Grundy County.

The abandoned well is at 5650 E. Route 53 in Gardner, where a Riviera Restaurant once stood.

In a letter to the Grundy County Finance Committee, Anderson said an on-site investigation took place Jan. 16.

The well has no cap and the casing may be in disrepair.

The Grundy County Health Committee made a recommendation to forward the issue to the Finance Committee for its members to decide how to bring the well into compliance.

Board member Dick Joyce said someone from Gardner who works with the Route 66 Committee told him that the committee would prefer to see a hand pump put on it, or

something less permanent than sealing it, in case the area could be used as part of the Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor experience in the future. “The county bought this land to put up a 911 tower, which didn’t happen,” Joyce said.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said it was brought to the Finance Committee to decide if the money should be spent to seal it, place a hand pump on the well, or to cap it until officials decide what to do.

Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman said he feels there is a legal concern about who would maintain it and whether or not the water was safe for public consumption.

Anderson said something needs to be done soon.

She received phone quotes from K&K Well Drilling of Yorkville, which said it would be $3,000 to add a hand pump, $850 to seal it if it is a 4-to-5inch well that goes down 150 feet, or $950 to seal it if it is a 6-inch well. The committee decided to place a temporary cap on the well, which Anderson said could be on for one year while officials make a decision on a permanent solution.

MORRIS – Less than a month after the Grundy County Personnel Committee approved the final job description for a new IT director, the search is over.

The board offered the job to a candidate who accepted the position this week.

“The person we offered the job to is by far, hands down, the most impressive candidate I’ve met,” Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said Monday night.

The full County Board voted Tuesday to hire the new director with a vote 13 to 1, with board member Kerri Courtright voting no and board members Frank Halpin, John Galloway and Ken Iverson absent, but are withholding the new hire’s name until he has the opportunity to inform his current employer.

The new hire is tentatively set to start March 30 with a salary of $87,000.

Courtright asked how the salary came to be that amount.

She said she owns a tech company and that while she read the resume and it is an impressive resume,

Coal City is the second municipality in Grundy County to attempt to cut animal control costs by having its police respond to a call prior to a call going out to animal control.

Coal City Administrator Matt Fritz previously said he expects the arrangement to save the village money.

The intergovernmental agreement passed at the Feb. 23 Coal City Village Board meeting.

The agreement, which was about a year in the making, states the county will furnish, supply and provide Coal City with animal control protection within the boundaries when requested by the Coal City Police Department.

Up until last year, Coal City was like most other local municipalities and received animal patrols five days a week.

“The finance committee approved a salary of $80,000 to $90,000. I’ve said before to attract and keep qualified individuals we have to pay a fair wage,” board member David Nelson said on Tuesday night.

The Grundy County Board also passed a resolution, 13 to 1, with board member Courtright voting no and board members Frank Halpin, John Galloway and Ken Iverson absent, Tuesday to authorize board chairman Welter to execute an intergovernmental agreement between the county and the village of Coal City to provide animal control services on an as-needed basis.

“The city of Morris attempted to address animal control in the same way and it resulted in them coming back to the table,” Welter said Tuesday night. “I think Coal City sees it as a cost savings but it could potentially cost them more money so we

Morris approves assistant principal contract Johnson has one year left before move to high school athletic director

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community High School board approved Monday a one-year contract Monday for Assistant Principal Jeff Johnson.

Johnson is in his 10th year as an assistant principal/ dean at MCHS and has spent his entire life in Morris, aside from five years at University of Southern Illinois-Carbon-

dale.

“I’m looking forward to another year as assistant principal at my alma mater,” Johnson said Tuesday.

“I’ve learned the importance of open lines of position communication with different types of relationships, whether it be in workplace, (with) students and parents. It’s an honor to carry on the tradition and pride of Morris High School,” he said.

When his next contract

expires, Johnson is looking forward to moving to athletic director for the 2016-17 school year.

With background as a former player, assistant and head coach at MCHS, Johnson expressed interest in the position when current athletic director George Dergo decided to retire after the 2015-16 year.

“I discussed it with my wife and with my background, we decided it’d be a great opportunity for me,” Johnson said.

“We’ve been able to develop a transition plan where I help Mr. Dergo out and get my feet wet, so to speak.”

District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said Tues-

day the process for finding the next assistant principal hasn’t started yet.

Johnson said the position will allow him to get back to one aspect of athletics he particularly misses.

“As a former coach, I found that I missed connecting with student athletes,” Johnson said. “If someone told me in high school I’d have the opportunity to become athletic director one day, I wouldn’t believe it. I just knew I wanted to coach and teach here after college. Opportunities arose to be in administration.”

Johnson’s family is rooted in Morris. His parents met at MCHS, and his kids have at-

tended the school.

In other news from the board meeting, it was announced that student fees for the 2015-16 school year will remain the same.

The school is monitoring costs in the driver’s education program for a possible change to the fee in 2016-17 school year or later, Halloran said.

The driver’s education fee at MCHS is $50. This fee at some high schools can be more than $200.

The board also granted tenure to fourth-year faculty members Keith Anderson, a social science teacher, and Laura Zomboracz, a science teacher.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting special patrols this St. Patrick’s Day to crack down on drunk drivers. Unbuckled motorists also will be ticketed.

“Too often, St. Patrick’s Day can be a deadly and dangerous time on our roadways because of drunk driving,” said Sheriff Kevin Callahan in a release.

“That is why starting March 13 and running through March 22, we will be working overtime with extra deputies out in full force to catch and arrest anyone who is driving drunk.”

In addition to looking for drunk drivers, sheriff’s deputies will be stepping up seat

belt enforcement. Sheriff Callahan said always designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive drunk are just two simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for drunk driving.

If you are hosting a party, you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you serve is involved in a drunk driving crash. Make sure all of your guests designate a sober driver in advance or help arrange ride-sharing with other sober drivers; serve lots of food and include lots of non-alcoholic beverages; keep the phone numbers for local cab companies handy and take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving drunk.

If you are attending a party,

designate a sober driver before the party begins and give that person your car keys. If you do not have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home, call a cab, sober friend or family member to pick you up or just stay where you are and sleep it off. Never let a friend leave your sight if you think they are about to drive while drunk, and always buckle up – it is still your best defense against a drunk driver.

By Gina Kraman Like all flourishing businesses, a successful farm needs to monitor its cash flow. A farm may have higher expenses in spring when crops are being planted, with higher income in the fall when crops are sold. Planning and saving for the seasons keeps farms solvent.

According to Vice President Chris Breyman, Grundy Bank, “The most valuable asset on a farmer’s balance sheet is the real estate. Although no one wants real estate debt, farm operators may need to incur some to survive and thrive.”

Refinancing or restructuring farm mortgages generate funds for farm needs, such as building repairs or expansion.

Breyman says, “Real estate is a long-term asset. If you use your farm to get additional credit, the proceeds from the loan should be used to finance similar long-term assets, such as buying more real estate or

building a new dwelling.” He cautions against using the money to finance short-term needs such as new equipment, which will cost more over time. “Just like a cash savings account, you can drain your farm equity by refinancing debt that doesn’t increase your capital base.”

Various banking credit options may offer better solutions. When meeting with your banker, Breyman suggests bringing tax returns from the past three years, current financial statements, and any additional information to help evaluate your credit request. FAMILY TABLE How to feed a family of four for less than $7

By DANIEL NEMAN St. Louis Post-Dispatch Feeding your family a good meal is easy. Just go to the grocery store and empty out your pocketbook.

But what if you aren’t so flush? What if your wallet is looking a little lean? What if times are hard and money is short? That’s why I decided to cook some delicious and even elegant meals to feed a family of four for less than $7. It is not difficult to do. All it takes is a bit of imagination.

Imagination and an inexpensive protein – no steak or lobster for these meals. Even ground beef and chicken have become so expensive that they can no longer be relied upon for a cheap meal. If you are looking to stretch your budget, you’ll need to stick with the essentials: beans, eggs and pasta.

First, the ground rules. I bought my food at Shop ‘n Save which, as the name implies, has prices that are generally lower than other local markets. Aldi also is a good bet for high-quality, lower-cost foods.

In determining the price of each meal, I took into account only the cost of the amount of the food that I used and put the rest aside for future use.

My 25.4-ounce bottle of olive oil cost $5.99, so two tablespoons of oil was about 23 cents. One tablespoon of butter, at $3.50 a pound, cost 11 cents. A dozen large eggs cost me $2.09, so six of them was $1.05.

In addition, I also kept to items that most or many people would ordinarily have in their pantry. I did buy some items on sale, but only if I needed them for my recipes – I did not alter the recipes to use sale items. And I counted the actual cost of everything I used, but only the amount I used.

4 medium potatoes, peeled 1 medium yellow onion 1 green pepper, diced 6 eggs 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided Hot sauce (if desired)

1. Cut the peeled potatoes in half lengthwise, then cut each half into crosswise slices about 1/8-inch thick (do not use a food processor). Chop the onions into ¼-inch pieces.

2. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add the potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally (covering the pan with a lid will make this go quicker).

After about 5 minutes, add the onions and green pepper and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes and peppers are tender, about 5 more minutes. Season heavily with salt; potatoes require a lot of salt. Remove from heat.

3. In a large mixing bowl, lightly beat eggs. Add the potato-onion mixture and stir until well-mixed.

Schilling’s MVP play against cyberbullies Baseball star turned bigmouth commentator Curt Schilling is no poster child for social media civility, but wouldn’t it be great if his aggressive fight this week to protect his own child against Internet trolls resulted in a reset of what cyber-sickos get away with online?

This disturbing episode began innocently with Schilling’s measured Feb. 25 Twitter shout-out to his 17-year-old daughter: “Congrats to Gabby Schilling who will pitch for the Salve Regina [University] Seahawks next year!!”

As Schilling noted on his own blog, he knew he was in for some smarty-mouth responses. After all, he’s expressed more than his fair share of outrageous points of view on matters ranging from evolution to anti-police protests.

By the weekend, the snarky feedback had turned horrifically lewd and nasty.

Schilling’s Twitter feed was inundated with responses that included the words rape and bloody underwear and sexually explicit terms so defiling to a woman that they are best omitted from this sentence.

Some people in Schilling’s shoes might just have accepted the despicable reaction as the price you pay for fame – or that we all pay for engaging in social media. Instead, Schilling called balderdash (substitute actual clubhouse language there) on that point of view.

The former Red Sox pitcher is a heat-throwing dad on a mission.

He saved every comment and began tracking down and contacting each bully. He’s reporting what he finds to coaches, university brass and

employers.

Two New Jersey college students appear to be among the worst offenders. One was suspended from school and faces a disciplinary hearing; the second lost his job as a part-time ticket seller for the Yankees.

Schilling says at least seven more culprits face punishment.

Now the FBI and local law enforcement are talking to him about filing criminal charges against some offenders.

Those of us who live with one foot in the virtual world of blogging and social media are all too familiar with the accusations, lies and characterizations that people fling about in that arena.

When cornered, the offenders respond with the ridiculous defense of, “Oh, it’s just a Facebook comment.”

Our assessment? The time it takes to type a comment and hit enter is clearly often not long enough for the brain to sufficiently engage. (At least we hope some amount of brainpower is in play.)

The graphic attack on Gabby Schilling is the cyberworld at its worst.

To whatever extent her dad’s past online behavior contributed to the escalating toxic atmosphere, chances are that he has learned something, too.

That doesn’t lessen the righteousness of how Schilling has handled his daughter’s tormentors.

As for the rest of us, considering our actions before we execute them is ultimately what will make the Internet a better place to work and play.

What’s at stake in pension reform SPRINGFIELD – “No wonder the state of Illinois is broke.”

That’s what my dining companion said over lunch Monday when I mentioned that one of every 10 state workers takes in more than $100,000 per year.

State workers receive health insurance and pension benefits that are far more generous than most of their counterparts in the private sector.

On March 18 the Illinois Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments over whether those pension benefits can be trimmed.

The state has $111 billion in unfunded pension liabilities and it won’t be able to get its fiscal house in order until something is done to resolve the situation.

MORRIS – Momentum plays a bigger part in volleyball than in almost any other sport. If a team gets on a roll, it can be nearly impossible for the other team to slow it down.

That was the case Tuesday night, as Saratoga seized the momentum in the middle of the second game and rode it all the way to victory in a Class 8-3A Saratoga Regional semifinal. The third-seeded Hawks lost the first game to second-seed Crest Hill Richland 25-19, but won the second, 25-12, and the third, 25-17.

“Momentum is a huge part of volleyball,” Saratoga coach Melanie Kunz said. “We had so many unforced errors in the first game. We had four service errors and 10 hitting errors, so we gave them 14 of their 25 points. We told the girls to keep the ball inbounds and make them earn their points. Also, we made it a game of small gains. Be the first one to five, the first one to 10. I think that made the girls a little more focused.”

Richland had the Hawks (15-6) on the ropes from the beginning in the first game, racing to a 5-0 lead. Saratoga took a 9-8 lead, but couldn’t maintain it after Richland went on a 7-1 run for a 15-10 advantage.

In the second game, Saratoga cleaned up its mistakes and never fell behind. A pair of aces from Chloe Hansen gave the Hawks a 7-2 lead. Alisson Bojovic teamed up with Olivia Schultz to score two and give Saratoga an 11-6 edge.

With Tara Callahan serving, Schultz had two more kills in a four-point run that put the Hawks up 16-7. When Megan Gerischer stepped to the line, Saratoga led 18-8. When she was done, she had served three aces and Schultz had a kill for a 22-8 lead en route to the Game 2 win.

The Hawks kept the pressure on in the pivotal third game. They led 5-3 with Hansen set to serve. Krista Runchey had two straight kills, followed by one from teammate Sydney Trotter. Hansen then delivered an ace and the Hawks led

10-3. Richland made a bit of a rally to pull to within 14-11, then hung around to make it even closer at 19-17. Saratoga, however, scored the final six points of the match, as Trotter served it out, recording a pair of aces.

“This was a total team win,” Kunz said. “The girls really worked together. If someone made a mistake, someone else was there to pick them up.

The girls on the bench were a big help, too, cheering and encouraging their teammates.

“It was also nice to be on our home floor, where the girls are comfortable. There was a nice crowd for a junior high volleyball match.”

The Hawks will now take on Manhattan for the regional title at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Manhattan, the fifth seed, defeated top-seeded Lockport Kelvin Grove 25-15, 25-16 in the other semifinal match Tuesday.

“We are playing as well as we have all year right now,” Kunz said. “The girls know they can’t relax just because the top seed got beat. We have to play the team that beat the top seed, so we know they can beat anyone.

“We’ve made a big improvement over last year, and the girls will be ready.”

But this one’s not on the kid, Maddon said Monday.

“He’s thinking too much,” Maddon said. “He’s getting a lot of information from a lot of us, and I think, at some point, sometimes it’s our fault. I just want us to leave him alone and let him play.

I’m not concerned. I’m really not.”

Baez, a slugging infielder who struck out at record rates at Triple-A Iowa and in the majors last season, has struck out in half his eight spring at-bats, including three times swinging Sunday against the Texas Rangers.

He looked lost at times, appearing to try different approaches at-bat to at-bat. ‘‘I was just trying to work and trying to make contact, and I was worrying too much about the mechanics,” Baez said. ‘‘That’s why I was completely lost, but we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”

Baez suggested the problem had less to do with infor-

mation overload than with his inability to leave the thinking about mechanics in the batting cage when he steps to the plate.

Baez, 22, hit 32 home runs between Iowa and the majors last season, but his 225 combined strikeouts were two more than Mark Reynolds’ major-league record.

He opened last season with a lengthy slump at Iowa, then put together a strong 2½ months leading up to his bigleague debut Aug. 5.

But he hit only .169 with nine homers and 95 strikeouts in 213 at-bats after the call-up, leaving him with a lot to prove this spring.

For now, Maddon wants to see the long-touted prospect try to relax and clear his head of the coaching noise. ‘‘I’m really not worried,” Maddon said. ‘‘I’ve heard about this for a while. I’ve been around guys like him before. The guy cares so much. He’s very good. And as we continue along, I think you’re going to start seeing him make adjustments and become more comfortable.”

Baez did, however, manage to hit a home run yesterday against the Indians.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Tuesday morning Jay Cutler was not being shopped for a trade and the Bears expect him to be the quarterback in 2015.

There was a report from AM-670’s Dan Bernstein on Monday that the Bears were “actively shopping” Cutler, who had 24 turnovers last season and is due $10 million guaranteed for 2016 on the third day of the league year, which is Thursday.

When speaking to the media at the Combine, neither Coach John Fox nor General Manager Ryan Pace committed to Cutler as the starter for 2015, making it clear they were going to do their due diligence and continue to get to know Cutler before making a decision.

“We’re going to take the full amount of time to gather information, visit and build a relationship and, hopefully, make the best decision for our organization,” Fox said.

Cutler, who threw a career-high 28 touchdowns last year and completed 66.0 percent of his passes (also a career best), was benched for Jimmy Clausen in Week 16 before returning to the starting role in Week 17 when Clausen – who was re-signed – suffered a concussion. Cutler has one playoff win as a Bear.

He didn’t overlap with new offensive coordinator Adam Gase in Denver, but according to the report from ESPN, Gase has been “enthusiastically making plans with a playbook they believe will accentuate Cutler’s strengths with the available talent around him.”

Cutler is the franchise’s leader in passing yards and is eight touchdown passes away from passing Sid Luckman’s club record for a career. Out of Bears quarterbacks with at least 300 pass attempts, Cutler has the best passer rating – 84.3.

Bridge players these days have pre-emptive optimism. Every chance they get, they open with a pre-empt. But sometimes that tactic backfires.

Today’s deal occurred during a small duplicate. At several tables, North opened three diamonds in the second position, despite the four-card spade suit. This was always passed out. East typically led a heart, and the defenders took two hearts, two diamonds and one or two spades.

When North passed, the auction went as given. North was not sure what to do over West’s two-heart response, but he knew his hand had great potential for play in spades.

East wondered about bidding five hearts, but remembered that his partner was a passed hand. (Five hearts could have been defeated by four tricks, NorthSouth taking one spade, one diamond, one diamond ruff, two clubs and one club ruff.) If West had led a heart, the defenders could have forced declarer to guess trumps. But a club lead was normal. South immediately discarded both of dummy’s heart losers, ruffed a heart in the dummy, and ran the spade nine, the percentage play for one loser. When that pulled out the ace, the spade suit split 2-2, and diamonds were 3-2, declarer brought home 12 tricks for a top.

In the second seat, you should have a textbook hand for a pre-empt because you are already past one opponent and are more likely than usual to be making life tough for your partner. **

Learning to control anger will help you avoid heart trouble Dear Doctor K: I have a bad temper. Could my anger trigger a heart attack?

Dear Reader: You’ve seen it in movies: A character shouts in anger -- then drops to the floor clutching his chest. But this isn’t just a movie scenario. Research shows that in the two hours after an angry outburst, a person has a slightly higher risk of having heart trouble. By heart trouble, I mean chest pain (angina), a heart attack, or a dangerous heart rhythm that can lead to sudden death. The person also is at higher risk for having a stroke.

How does a surge of anger increase your risk for heart trouble or a stroke? I spoke to my colleague Dr. Murray A. Mittleman, an associate pro-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff fessor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, about how anger can trigger heart trouble. He explained that anger causes an outpouring of stress hormones. These hormones make your heart beat faster and your blood pressure rise.

They also make your blood more likely to clot.

The risk that any particular surge of anger will cause heart trouble or a stroke is small, but it’s real. And it’s much higher in people who have heart disease. Unfortunately, many people who have heart disease don’t know it.

About 80 percent of people who have sudden death occurring outside the hospital did not know that they had heart disease.

So if you know you have heart disease, or risk factors for heart disease, it’s particularly important to avoid situations that might cause you to be angry. I know that’s easier said than done -- but it can be done. Sometimes you need to make decisions that you don’t want to make, such as looking for a new job if it’s making you constantly angry.

You also need to learn how to control your anger. On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a brief questionnaire to help rate your anger level.

To better control your anger, consider an anger

management program. Such programs help people tone down their anger, respond to threatening situations less aggressively and use positive behavior strategies. It remains to be proven that anger management can reduce heart trouble and strokes. However, I’ll bet it does.

Other strategies for keeping anger at bay include the following: RELAX. In the heat of the moment, try to step back and take some deep breaths.

REFRAME YOUR THINKING. When angry, people tend to exaggerate.

COMMUNICATE WITH CARE. During an argument, slow down. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and stop to think before respond-

ing.

CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT. When your immediate surroundings trigger rage, move away if possible. Don’t try to get back at whoever or whatever is making you angry.

Just walk away.

Medication may also help.

Limited evidence suggests that beta blockers, which slow the heart rate and control blood pressure, may lessen the effect of anger on the heart. And antidepressant drugs known as SSRIs may reduce the frequency of angry outbursts and help you better control your impulses.
