Mavis is survived by her children, June (Jeff) Fleming of Onley, Illinois, Dr. Kenneth Wayne (Kathy) Anderson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Randy (Debbie) Anderson of Seabrook, Texas, Rodney Anderson of Chicago, Illinois, and Joan (Ron) Franck of Newhall, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Weston Anderson; son, Wesley Keith Anderson; parents, Allen and Mamie Foreman; sister, Hazel Friestad; and brother, Harold Foreman.

Mavis was born October 7, 1923, in her parent’s home in rural Sheridan, Illinois. She loved growing up on a farm. As a child she would rather be outside playing with animals than

inside doing dishes. That is probably why she seldom minded walking the fence lines on her way to the little one room school house.

Growing up she learned to swim at the local gravel pit and had fond memories of going roller skating weekly with her family. It was at a Sunday church roller staking event that Mavis met her future husband.

After graduating from Somanauk High School. Mavis worked for Luminous Processes, Inc. where she hand painted fluorescent dials for WWII war planes.

On March 18, 1943, Mavis married Kenneth Weston Anderson. They farmed Ken’s family farm near Seneca, Illinois, until moving to Newhall, Iowa, in the fall of 1997. Together Mavis and Ken raised six children. Mavis was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

She was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening and canning. Mavis had a thoughtful, gentle spirit and a fantastic memory for dates.

Seldom did she forget to send birthday or anniversary cards to loved ones. Even the week prior to her death she would read through the names written in her birthday book.

Mavis always liked to be homes.

She often joked about her inability to spend a night at her grandparent’s home.

Her dad would have to get her before the sun went down. Knowing this, it was very important for her family to be able to provide care for Mavis at home during her final days.

After the death of her husband in 2011, Mavis was welcomed into and made

her home with her daughter, Joan and son-in-law, Ron. She appreciated life in the country on the farm and being with her family.

Mavis was surrounded by the love and activities of Joan and Ron’s five children, Kelsey, Nathan, Caleb, Ashley and Joshua. It was at home bathed in love and with the help of hospice that Mavis was able to comfortably and peacefully move from this earthly life into the final and True Home of her Saviors loving arms.

Memorials may be made to Unity Point Hospice.

LORRAINE D. BROCKMAN Born: Sept. 7, 1926; in Gardner, IL Died: Feb. 24, 2015; in Hudson, FL

Lorraine D. Brockman, 88, of Gardner, Illinois went to be with the Lord 2:46 p.m. on February 24, 2015, from the Gulfside Center for Hospice Care at Bayonet Point in Hudson, Florida.

Lorraine was born Sept. 7, 1926, at Gardner, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Josephine Sowers. She was raised in Gardner and graduated from Gardner South Wilmington High School.

On April 20th of 1946 she married Leonard Brockman of Marseilles, Illinois and they had eight children.

Leonard preceded her in death on Oct.

She loved to sing, crochet, knit, quilt, travel and politics. She also had many pen pals throughout the United States and England.

In addition to her husband and parents, Lorraine was also preceded in death by a son, Loren E. Brockman; a daughter, Margaret Jo Brockman; grandson, Matthew Leonard Brockman; brothers, John Sowers, Archie Sowers, Harold Sowers and Bobby Sowers; and sisters, Maxine Dite, Betty Huston, Jean Treasure, Juanita Marshall and Dorothy Muzzarelli.

Surviving Lorraine are her children, Pamela (David) Taylor of El Cajon, CA, Leonard (Debbie) Brockman of Virginia, Mark (Mary) Brockman of Port Richey, FL, Catherine Brockman of Illinois, Thomas Brockman of Nanaimo, Vancouver BC and Krista (Steve) Price of Marshall, IL; two sisters, Rebecca and Marsha Sowers of Gardner, IL; a sister-in-law, Sandra Sowers; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will take place in the Braceville United Methodist Church in Braceville, IL at 11:00 a.m. on March 28, 2015, with Rev. Bennett Woods officiating.

High school play has custom-made costumes, showstopper extras

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – As the stage lights start to come up at the Coal City High School auditorium, smoke fills the air and viewers are taken to a village that only exists in fairy tales – the home of Belle, a village described as a place where each day is like the last.

“What the kids are able to do in eight weeks astonishes me,” musical director Jack Micetich said during rehearsal Sunday. “I hope people come and enjoy the classic fairy tale with the underlying message that beauty comes from within.”

The student production of “Beauty and the Beast” will be filled with special effects and costuming, some of which has been kept under wraps only to be talked about after the show’s five-day run, which starts Thursday.

The Beast is played by senior Tyler Rodgers, who is taking the stage for his 12th production, and last as a student at Coal City High School.

“I like being able to take something I grew up seeing.

I watched ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and now I get to be the

Beast,” he said.

Regardless of the number of times he watched the show growing up, he finds certain aspects of the character harder than others.

It’s not the custom-made head piece created by Chad White in his Morris studio that transforms him from Tyler to the Beast, but the emotions that come with the character.

“It’s challenging to make the emotional connection,” he said. “Getting anger correct, and showing the emotions how the Beast would show them.”

Lauren Kmetz, the senior playing Belle, also said it was difficult to be angry in the way her roll calls for.

“To be angry at parts is challenging. I’m not an angry person,” she said.

This is Kmetz’s seventh time on stage and as a different character than her previous roles. She said she has to dig deeper for those emotions and have confidence in herself that wasn’t required in other performances.

“Last year I was a wicked witch, everyone knows what that is,” she said. “In a way I have to do my part in a typical Disney fashion, but I have to inject myself into the charac-

The one thing those involved in the production agreed on is the attention to detail that went into this performance will keep the audience’s attention.

Micetich said as backdrops were chosen, those involved started thinking about costumes and while the leads are important, it’s the ensemble that moves you through the musical.

“We reinvented some of the classic costumes,” Micetich said. “We chose bright, overthe-top costumes.”

Preparation started in October and included viewing available costumes – including some from Wilmington High School, which had purchased costumes from Josie O’Kain’s Costume Shop in Joliet when it closed.

County Board Chairman David Welter said in December he expected the Personnel Committee to fine-tune the job description and post the position by Jan. 8.

In January, the Grundy County Finance Committee approved a one-time $10,000 stipend and an hourly rate increase for Administrative Assistant Sandy Pommier, who has taken on extra responsibilities while the board searches for a new administrator.

The job currently is budgeted for $85,000 per year; the possible raise of the salary above the budgeted amount will need to be budgeted for going forward.

Roth said the county would be fine for this year’s budget as it has gone this long without an administrator, but would have to budget for it next year.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Currently in his 34th year at Morris Community High School, Principal Kelly Hussey has been given a new contract that will carry him to his retirement in four years.

The Morris Community High School Board approved Hussey’s contract after an executive session Monday with a unanimous vote.

The contract begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2019, when he plans to retire.

“I’m excited to finish the last four years of my career at Morris High School,” Hussey said in a phone interview after the board meeting. “I always say I’m biased, but this is a great place to live and work.

It’s such an honor to finish my career here.”

Hussey was sick Monday evening and unable to attend the board meeting.

District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said Hussey brings a unique set of skills to the principalship.

“His approach to people and being a student-centered leader, along with building the master schedule and his athletic background make him an outstanding principal,” Halloran said Monday afternoon.

“Mr. Hussey’s passion for MCHS is about the students,

families and faculty,” Halloran continued. “I know he’s determined to finish strong and continue our improvement efforts.”

Hussey was hired in 1981 as a physical education teacher and has spent time as a guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal. He spent numerous years as a coach of volleyball and swimming, in addition to his faculty positions.

The new pact is structured much like Halloran’s contract, signed in July 2013, and ending June 30, 2018.

The multi-year deals include yearly 2 percent raises and performance goals that if reached, will trigger up to an additional 2 percent raise each year, for at most, a 4 percent raise in any given year.

“We felt that it was fiscally responsible to sign performance-based contracts,” Halloran said. “Starting with my contract in 2013, the board ap-

Personnel Committee members Ann Gill and Vicki Geiger also sit on the finance committee and said they were looking for guidance before the personnel meeting this week when that committee expects to approve the job description and have it posted.

Heidi Miller, Land Use director and immediate past administrator, resigned from the administrator position in September after five months on the job.

She previously said she resigned for not following proper hiring protocol. She continues to be the county’s Land Use director.

Miller was the fourth administrator the county has had since 2011.

In the contract, it states that Hussey’s salary for the 2015-16 school year will be $108,502.

Both Halloran’s retirement in 2018 and Hussey’s retirement in 2019 take Morris to a transitional period when new leadership will need to be found.

“Mr. Hussey has been huge to this school district,” school board president Dennis Best said after the meeting. “Over the next few years there will be quite a bit of turnover in leadership, the complexion of this district is changing significantly.”

Halloran said no formal discussions have taken place regarding the next phase of school leadership, but talks will begin soon.

Channahon trims budget at workshop Projected $500,000 deficit whittled down to $6,000 by end of discussion

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – It took only two hours for Channahon staff, trustees and the mayor to save the village almost half a million dollars during a Saturday morning budget workshop.

Imagine, one joked at the end of the meeting, what another couple of hours might do.

The group met to continue its fine-tuning of this year’s expenses. An initial workshop was held during last week’s Village Board meeting, and the weekend discussion was arranged to address what was shaping up to be a $500,000 deficit.

Finance Director Heather Morandi said the revenue the village expects to see this

year won’t support proposed expenses in the general and capital improvement funds.

“Wish lists” composed by department heads were whittled down over the last few weeks, and the board was left with a list of line items staff believe were necessary for optimum village function.

Three items the board slashed from the budget Saturday were a new truck with an attached snowplow and two police squad cars.

Existing vehicles are getting higher in mileage, trustees were told, but both the public works director and the police chief said with the large deficit this year, the purchases could be held off for now.

Police Chief Jeff Wold added, however, that by next year the department may need three or four new squad cars.

“Let’s see what else we can eliminate from the wish list before we raise taxes.”

Mark Scaggs Channahon trustee Morandi said that unless revenues “really decline” next year, the village’s budget should not face the deficit it has this year.

Trustees also decided to go with Village President Joe Cook’s suggestion to split the $150,000 cost of an engineering study for a Bridge Street bike path into two fiscal years, if engineers agree, which would shave off another $75,000 this year.

New village gateway signs that were to be posted at Channahon’s entrance points were also cut, as was the purchase of a 2-year-old Gator utility ve-

hicle for the Public Works Department. Director Ed Dolezal had requested the Gator for maintaining the grassy areas along bike paths, applying mosquito larvicide to catch basins, hauling smaller objects around the public works facilities and other jobs now done by trucks. The board decided the vehicle was not a priority this year.

In all, the deficit was reduced to $6,000 by the end of the workshop.

Also discussed, but not decided, were some ways to bring new revenue to the village, including increasing the impound fee for vehicles of people arrested while driving.

Channahon charges $300, according to Wold, while neighboring towns charge $500.

Another revenue measure considered was an increase in fees for fingerprinting services the police department offers. Wold estimated about 500 people a year have their

fingerprints taken at the department.

There is no charge for Channahon residents who request the service and a $15 charge for nonresidents.

Other facilities generally charge quite a bit more for fingerprinting services, Wold said.

Trustees were not opposed to raising fees for fingerprinting or impounding and could take up the measures as action items later.

They were not as enthusiastic about another revenue-generating idea – an increase in utility fees to compensate for new village computer software.

Several trustees were against that proposal, including Mark Scaggs, who suggested finding other ways to get rid of the deficit before such fees or taxes were increased.

“Let’s see what else we can eliminate from the wish list before we raise taxes,” Scaggs said.

The board discussed two options to finance the program. Option one would take 14 students off the at-risk list and would cause a net loss of $7,316, which would break even if the district charges tuition of $55 a month for each student. Option two would not limit it to the at-risk list and open it to 14 students at the cost of $200 a month in tuition.

This would leave the district $19,000 ahead after expenses.

Bugg told board members that one of the main qualifiers for the at-risk list is to be below poverty level, and even $55 a month would be hard for those students, which make up some of the waiting list but not all.

The board will review this at the next study session before voting on it in April.

Coal City school registration fees to increase

Rollover accidents on westbound I-80 No additional passengers found from crash

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Two rollover crashes occurred in recent days on Interstate 80 near the 111 mile marker in Morris.

Emergency responders spent part of Saturday night searching for passengers believed to be missing after the first rollover accident, but it was later learned no other passengers were involved in the accident.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District responded to the first crash about 9 p.m. Saturday.

Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said when crews arrived on the scene Saturday, the way the vehicle’s driver responded led crews to believe there were other people in the car.

“Sometimes people in accidents, if maybe they hit their head or from the shock of being in an accident, lose track of time and maybe who was around,” Steffes said Monday afternoon.

Coal City Fire Protection District’s K-9 unit as well as the Morris Police Department K-9 unit were called to help search for possible passengers.

An air search of the area

was also called in.

Steffes said all the searches resulted in negative findings, so they believe the driver was the only one in the car.

The search was called off about 10 p.m.

“It cost us a lot of time and resources to make sure no one was there, but I’d rather there be no one there,” Steffes said.

The driver was transported to Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

Lazy Acres fire handled; no injuries MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Firefighters extinguished a structure fire Sunday evening at Lazy Acres Recreation Club on Gun Club Road in Morris.

At 5:03 p.m., the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District was summoned to Lazy Acres Recreation Club, 6300 Gun Club Road, for a reported structure fire, according to a news release from the district.

Upon arrival, crews located the fire in one of the outbuildings served by a fireplace.

The fire breached an interior wall and went into the building’s attic, setting the entire attic area on fire, according to the news release.

Morris crews had the fire under control within 15 minutes and put out within one hour.

Rollover Monday morning

About 6:50 a.m. Monday, the Morris fire district was called to another single-vehicle rollover also in the westbound lanes on I-80 just west of Saturday night’s accident site, Bob Will, deputy chief, said Monday.

The vehicle had only the driver in it and he was out of the vehicle by the time emergency responders arrived.

The vehicle rolled several times and landed upside down in the lanes, Wills said.

It took about 45 minutes to get the accident cleared and traffic had to be shut down temporarily.

Wills said he believed the driver’s injuries were not severe. He was taken to Morris Hospital. Illinois State Police could not be reached for comment Monday.

Businesses needed for 8th-grade fair, our future

By DEVAN GAGLIARDO Community Foundation of Grundy County MORRIS – If you ask a 4-year-old what do you want to be when you grow up, they often times answer by saying a fireman, police officer, or something creative like a superhero or a cat. If you ask a 10-year-old the same question, they often answer with an occupation of their parents or a “famous” type job: basketball player, actress, president or a singer.

At some point, our youth realize they can’t grow up to be

a cat or they become aware of the fact that although they love the game, a career in basketball may not be in the cards for them.

Some teens may know exactly what they want to be, but many either haven’t thought about it or have a limited knowledge of what type of careers are available.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County and Grundy Area Vocational Center (GAVC) in conjunction with the Business Education Council is holding an event with the purpose of exposing Grundy County eighth-graders

to a variety of careers available in and around Grundy County.

On April 21, the District 101 Recreation Center on Morris High Schomore than 1,900 eighth-graders, as well as GAVC students and a variety of businesses from the Grundy County area.

We believe it is never too early for students to begin thinking about their future.

However, we want it to be fun and engaging, which is why businesses have been asked to provide an interactive activity at their booth.

For example, Morris Hos-

pital Laboratory will have a microscope set up so students can see cells and tissue and Riverside Medical Center of Coal City will be bringing phlebotomy arm. We are excited to have State Farm coming with their mobile catastrophe vehicle and the National Weather Service with a hands on flood plain model.

In addition to businesses, we also will have education represented at the fair. Each GAVC program will have a booth with student demonstrations. Joliet Junior College also will be attending so students can learn about some

of their programs. At this time, we have approximately half of the businesses we have the capacity for; therefore, we would welcome others to participate.

The fair is free for businesses to participate and is a wonderful way to talk with the upcoming workforce to inform them of the opportunities available in your career field as well as what type of training and education is required.

A bump in the road for Illinois’ budget Gov. Bruce Rauner has met with dozens of state legislators both individually and in small groups since his election. By all accounts, every meeting has been cordial and he has scored lots of points with legislators who aren’t accustomed to this sort of gubernatorial attention.

Until last week, that is, when he had the Senate Black Caucus over to the mansion for breakfast. Things started out well enough, but things turned south in a hurry when Rauner said he couldn’t accept the Senate super-majority party’s stand-alone proposal to patch about $600 million of the current fiscal year’s $1.6 billion budget deficit with transfers from special state funds. He wanted, he said, an “all or nothing” solution.

Rauner repeatedly said he wouldn’t raise taxes to solve this year’s budget problems and therefore absolutely needed to make big cuts.

Legislators should “trust me,” Rauner said. “We don’t know you,” was their reply.

And since his proposed budget for next fiscal year, which begins July 1, demands huge cuts to major social programs, why should they trust him to not go after those same cherished programs in this year’s budget if they give him the carte blanche he is demanding to make whatever reductions he desires?

Rauner had met with a few members of the House Black Caucus, and he chastised the Senate Democrats for not working with him like the House has been. As anyone who has ever visited with African-American state Senators undoubtedly knows, there is no more “anti-House” group in their entire chamber than the Senate Black Caucus.

Making matters somewhat worse, failed African-American Chicago mayoral candidate Willie Wilson showed up in Springfield the day before and asked Senate President John Cullerton to convene a Senate Black Caucus meeting with him that very day.

Wilson essentially offered himself up as a conduit to the Republican governor, whom he supported last year. One member did give him a list of items on her wish list and he apparently took it to the governor. Rauner told the Caucus that he’d read the list and could support almost everything in it for next fiscal year, but he would need them to back him 100 percent this fiscal year. His offer was firmly declined.

At one point, the governor’s demands grew so loud and insistent that one Black Caucus member noted aloud that Illinois voters “didn’t elect a king” last year.

Senate President Cullerton has so far avoided the fate of his Democratic predecessors.

He has done this partly by listening respectfully to all sides and not proceeding without consensus. Unless those wounds are healed quickly and the governor begins to accommodate opposing views, he is going to have a really tough time with his budget fix.

The Morris Daily Herald coverage area still had three boys basketball teams running in the postseason Friday, and all were playing for titles. When the 7 o’clock bell tolled that night, Morris tipped off against Lincoln-Way West in the Class 3A Coal City Regional, Minooka began its game against Neuqua Valley in the Class 4A Joliet West Regional and Newark started up against Flanagan-Cornell in the Class 1A Somonauk Sectional.

Two hours later, it was all over.

Morris got itself in a big hole early against the top-seeded Warriors, as West went on a 20-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters after the game was tied at 7 midway through the first quarter.

The Redskins, who finished 18-10, had lived and died with the 3-point shot all season, more often than not using it to carry them to a win. On Friday night, though, they couldn’t get many to fall,

The 68-42 score was not indicative of the way the Redskins played this season. With the three-headed monster of 3-point shooting specialists Austin Patterson, Evan Bjelland and Jake Walker, Morris could never be counted out of a game. That trio had been together on varsity since their sophomore year, with Bjelland playing up on the varsity as a freshman as well.

He finished his career having played in 110 varsity games, a modern-day school record. In the three years the triumvirate played together, the Redskins racked up 51 wins.

Nequa Valley stops Minooka in 2nd half, wins regional

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Nequa Valley overcame a determined Minooka team to win the Class 4A Joliet West Regional championship, 41-33, on Friday night.

The Wildcats (26-4) advance to the Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional semifinals. The Indians, who reached a regional final for the first time in 15 years, finished the season with a 15-16 mark. Nequa Valley led, 30-16, at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Indians used a 13-3 scoring run to cut the deficit to 33-29 with 4:12 to play.

The Wildcats milked the clock down to 2:28 before turning it over. A driving layup by sophomore guard Jonny Butler cut the lead to 33-31 with 2:02 left.

Nequa Valley senior guard Demond George (10 points) answered with a driving layup to put the Wildcats ahead 3531 with 1:28 to play. Minooka’s Joe Butler then made it to the foul line and sank two free throws to make it 35-33 with 1:04 to go. George answered by driving down the lane for another layup to give the Wildcats some breathing room at 37-33 with :50 left.

The Indians’ hopes ended when junior guard Jon Lamas was called for an offensive foul while driving the lane.

“We just battled,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “We were resilient. I think having our backs against the wall helped us to play better. We had them on the ropes, and I think minus a couple of layups we would have gotten them.

“They [the Butlers] just epitomize the toughness of Minooka basketball in everything they do whether it’s at the offensive end or the defensive end. They weren’t going to accept a loss out there,” Tanaka said.

Minooka came out ready to play from the start. The In-

dians built an early 4-0 lead behind free throws by junior center Blake Parzych and a driving layup by Jonny Butler.

The Wildcats didn’t score until Alex Edwards sank a 3-pointer with 2:25 to play in the first quarter. Nequa Valley managed to take a 7-6 lead into the second.

“We were every bit ready to battle. The kids gave every ounce of energy they had,” Tanaka said. “We’re a defensive basketball team and even though they are capable of putting up 80 to 90 points we knew we could stop them defensively. We don’t let people run their offense. We just play tough.”

The difference in the game was the second quarter, as Minooka did not score a point.

Fortunately for the Indians, Nequa Valley only scored seven, so the halftime score was 14-6. The game still was in reach.

“That was the key to the basketball game,” Tanaka said. “We went cold. We got point blank shots. We had some open threes. They just didn’t fall, and Nequa does a great job of limiting you to just one opportunity.”

“We struggle offensively from time to time. Rose rebuffs media concerns amid recovery schedule

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com Someday Derrick Rose may get it. It just wasn’t going to be on Monday. Meeting with the media for the first time since he had a third knee surgery, the Bulls point guard made no guarantees that he would be back this season, despite his organization putting a four-tosix week timetable on him.

“Who cares? I’m not even thinking about that right

now,” Rose replied, when asked about the organization’s return window. “I’m thinking about getting the most out of every day.”

Asked when he expected to be back, Rose said, “Who knows? Whenever I feel well that’s when I’ll step back on the court.”

Not exactly what many were hoping to hear from the face of the franchise, whether that’s his reality after having a piece of his right meniscus

removed back on Feb. 27.

The hope was Rose would have an approach of doing whatever was in his power to get back. Instead, it was more of what he’s shown in the previous two surgeries, which means going at his pace, and when he’s ready.

“No pressure at all, especially not with this team,” Rose said, when asked if he felt an urgency to help this current roster come playoff time. “We’ve got a great team.

If anything, my teammates are telling me to take my time, and when I’m really healthy I’ll come back.”

Rose started riding a bike and conditioning last week, and was taking shots before the Monday night with Memphis. He is still not jumping or lifting weights with the knee, and knows that if he does return come playoff time, it would be a huge test of his conditioning.

STAFF REPORTS CHANNAHON – For the first time in school history, Families of Faith Chrisitan Academy’s boys basketball team won the South Shore Christian Conference Tournament on Saturday, defeating Grace Christian Academy 6962.

The game was tied at 13 at the end of the first quarter, but Farmilies of Faith outscored Grace Christian 21-12 in the second to take a 34-25 halftime lead. The lead remained at nine at the end of three quarters as each team scored 18 points. Grace Christian outscored Famlies of Faith, 19-17, in the fourth, but it was not enough.

Minooka, meanwhile, showed the basketball world that the Indians will be a force to be reckoned with next year for sure, and possibly for at least the next few.

Neuqua Valley, the top seed on the Bolingbrook Sectional, had its hands full in a 41-33 win over Minooka, which started a freshman (Keegan Graebner), a sophomore (Jonny Butler) and three juniors (Joe Butler, Larry Roberts and Blake Parzych) in Friday’s title game. This was coming off a game in which Minooka defeated Joliet West on its own floor.

Earlier in the season, the Indians beat Galesburg, which was 17-1 and ranked No. 3 in Class 3A at the time, by 10 points in its own gym.

They also split with Plain-

Screaming Eagles with 29 points and 14 rebounds, while Cody Blan had 17 points, seven assists and four steals. Cameron Latour added 13 points and six rebounds for Families of Faith.

Families of Faith finished fourth after a 51-39 loss to Kankakee Trinity Academy. Destiny Villalejo scored 32 points to lead Families of Faith.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Minooka first at H-F Invite:

Minooka had nine first places Saturday and scored 167 points to 72 for runner-up Homewood-Flossmoor.

Minooka’s Peter Andreano won the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Justin Wolz set a school record in the 600 field North, the defending Southwest Prairie Conference champion, and held a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter in a game they lost before North staged a comeback for the ages.

With another year of experience and development under their belts, Minooka could be a team to watch next season, with a good chance of winning the program’s first regional title since 1977.

Newark was looking to win its fifth sectional since 2009 and went to overtime before losing.

The Norsemen will be another team with a bullseye on its back next year, as they had only one senior (Karter Kunkel) on their roster.

Before the overtime loss in the sectional final, Newark had won 13 straight games after starting the season 8-10.

And they went on that run without injured big man Jack Clausel. With all their starters back next year, plus a full healthy season from the 6-foot7 Clausel, the Norse could make a lot of noise in Class 1A next year. Yes, the basketball season was over too soon, but for a lot of area fans, next year can’t get here soon enough.

Minooka’s Mackenzie Callahan won the 3,200 (11:33.30) and Emily Ellis won the 800 (2:38.89). Olivia Klank and

Junior High School advanced eight wrestlers to the state meet.

We have been looking at deals in which knowledge of some percentages would have aided declarer.

However, sometimes card reading is more valuable than odds. Also, what did not happen can be more revealing that what did occur.

In this deal, South opens one spade in the fourth position. Then, after North raises to two spades, South adds three points for his singleton and jumps to game. (He also has only five losers, which is the number for a game-bid.) West leads the club jack.

How should declarer read the deal?

South starts with three top losers: two hearts and one club. He must play the trump suit without loss. Taken in isolation, the finesse is a much better bet (50 percent) than trying to drop a singleton king offside (only 6.2 percent). But how do the bidding and opening lead affect these odds?

When West leads the club jack, it marks East with the ace and queen.

(West would not have led the suit from an A-J-10 holding, and would have started with the queen if holding the queen and jack.)

Also, that lead marks East with at least one high heart honor, because if West had the heart ace-king, he would have led that ace, not the club jack.

So East is marked with at least nine points in hearts and clubs. If he also held the spade king, he would have opened the bidding.

South should ruff the second club trick and cash his spade ace. It’s his only chance. **

Happy single man feels pressure from his friends Dear Abby: I have never had a long-term relationship. My friends and family kept calling me out for it. I tried online dating and setups by friends and family, but nothing worked out.

Dear Abby: I attend a small church with two of my grandchildren, ages 5 and 10. About 90 percent of the time they are the ONLY children there.

They are very active in the church and are the bell ringers, candle lighters and offer-

ing collectors. They partake in the welcoming and special prayers, lead the Pledge of Allegiance, sing songs and do communion when we have it.

I allow them to bring their iPads to occupy them during the sermon – on silent, of course. I feel that because they participate so much in all other areas and the “adult” sermon is usually over their heads, there is no harm done.

My sister, however, insists it is rude and disrespectful.

She is constantly getting after them, telling them to put their iPads away and pay attention.
