Born: June 16, 1925; in Braceville, IL Died: Feb. 4, 2015; in Coal City, IL Betty Lee Davito (nee Guardia), age 89, of Coal City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at her home.

Born June 16, 1925, on the Guardia farm in Braceville, BettyLee Elizabeth was a daughter of the late Leno “Leo” and Edith (Menietto) Guardia.

She was raised and educated in the Braceville Public Grade School and graduated from Gardner South Wilmington High School. After high school, Betty worked several secretarial and clerical jobs which included, Coal City Grain Elevator, Warner Brothers in Chicago, US Rubber and McGraw Construction.

In January of 1945, she went on to further her education at the University of Illinois in Urbana, where she studied until June of 1947. During those years she would also return home in the summer to work at the Joliet Arsenal, which turned into a full time position until 1952. On June 4, 1949, Betty married Joseph Davito in Assumption Catholic Church.

She enjoyed being a homemaker after leaving the arsenal and spent the remainder of the 1950’s and most of the 1960’s raising her family. It was in 1969 that Betty’s career as an educator began in Braceville, where she was a secretary and taught art.

In 1970 she began attending Joliet Junior College and then moved on to Lewis University, where she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Education in 1975. Mrs. Davito taught 3rd grade in Minooka until 1977, when she moved over to Channahon grade school to teach 4th grade until her retirement in 1988.

Betty was an active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, where she sang in the choir and was a member of The Martha’s. She was a 4-H Leader for 10 years, and enjoyed flower gardening, crafts, sewing and canning. Betty loved drawing from an early age and loved oil painting and china painting, many of which were on display in her home.

She took pleasure in garage sales and auctions, had a passion for music, and could often be found dancing where ever the music was played and the opportunity presented.

A woman proud of her Northern Italian heritage, Betty made memories during her trips to Italy. She was known for her bagna cauda parties and polenta, and will be remembered

POLICE REPORTS for her love of entertaining. Betty lived life to the fullest, was a mentor to all ages, and leaves behind a legacy of truly being a ‘jack of all trades’, who was always willing to try anything.

Survivors include her children, Lee J. Davito of Bloomington, Kimberly K. Reilly of Shorewood, Terry J. Davito of Bloomington and Joseph D. (Jill) Davito of Island Lake; three grandchildren, Casey Reilly of Shorewood and Joey and Jenna Davito of Island Lake; one sister, June McLuckie of Coal City; one step-brother, Kenneth Berta of Seattle, Washington; her brother-in-law, William Davito of Joliet; sister-in-law, Betty Maland of Coal City; numerous nieces and nephews, including Carol Young of Shorewood, who was like a daughter to Betty; and her lifelong friend and dear companion Jack Heavens of Coal City.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph on July 17, 2001; her step-sister, Dorothy Hulbert; and nephew, Billy McLuckie.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2015, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City.

Funeral services will follow Monday morning February 9th at 10:00 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee Street in Coal City, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Betty will be laid to rest with her late husband Joseph.

Pallbearers will be: Lee Davito, Terry Davito, Joseph Davito, Jerry McLuckie, Danny Davito and Jimmy Viano.

Minooka • Daniel J. Rice, 22, of Minooka, was arrested by Minooka police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on charges of possession of methamphetamine and driving under the influence of drugs. He also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

• Dane M. Donegan, 20, of Joliet was arrested by Minooka police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession with the intent to deliver 30 to 500 grams of cannabis.

Minooka earns No. 4 ranking on list More info

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Josh and Sarah Schroeder were looking for a new place to live about two years ago that would be close to family and provide the best environment for their two toddlers.

They looked at several places with good school districts and a nice atmosphere for their 2-year-old son Grayson, 1-year-old daughter Lucy, and 13-year-old dog Baby, and settled on a home in Westwind Estates, a growing Minooka subdivision.

“Minooka seemed like it had grown a lot, but it still has that small-town atmosphere,” said Josh Schroeder, whose family moved in April 2014.

“Location was a big part of it.”

Schroeder also said the homes were more affordable in Minooka.

“We were initially looking all over the Joliet area,” he said. “Every time we found a home, we were outbid. But the homes here are very affordable.”

Minooka’s affordable housing and good educational system made it a top five place on the “Best Cities for Young Families in Illinois” list, according to new rankings by NerdWallet.com, a personal finance resource that issues many rankings for consumers information.

that ranking,” Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said. “We do try hard for young families and the schools are terrific.”

Education

Minooka School District 201 has been one of the higher performing districts in the area, but that has been accomplished through talent and efficiency, Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.

“We have some of the

highest academic scores in the three-county area, Will, Grundy and Kendall,” Gegenheimer said. “That’s a credit to those students who work hard.

But that’s also a credit to our teachers. And we do this all very efficiently.”

Gegenheimer said the district has one of the lowest operating expenses in the state.

That, along with the student performance, led to the district receiving the Illinois SchoolSearch 2013 Bright Star Award for educational excellence. The award went to 91 of 866 Illinois school districts.

Coal City school district evaluating its bus system

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City school district officials are looking at several ways to make the bus system more cost-effective.

School board members discussed Wednesday potentially lengthening bus time from 45 minutes to an hour, and eliminating reserved seats for kids rostered on buses but not using them.

Discussion started after Superintendent Kent Bugg told board members grant money awarded to the village of Coal City and Coal City Unit Community School District No. 1 for the Illinois Safe Routes to School program was not going to be available.

“It’s no surprise we got the grant,” Bugg said. “But the state has frozen those funds.”

With a $20,000 match by the school district, the grant would have given the village and school district funds to eliminate a state-designated hazardous route by putting in sidewalks.

Bugg said the grant would have allowed the school to eliminate two school buses on state-designated hazardous routes that the school has to service. That would have potentially saved the school district $72,000 a year.

“We’re hoping not the next school year, but the year after that, the sidewalks will be put in,” Bugg said.

Jason Finklestein, Coal City Unit Community School District No. 1 transportation director school district is looking at is identifying students who are rostered for bus service, but are not using the buses.

School board member Mary Gill said she noticed that sometimes the district’s buses aren’t at full capacity.

“How many kids are eligible? We can find out that not many of them ride the bus,” Gill said.

Transportation Director Jason Finklestein said he has noticed this too, and that kids are often either at before-school or after-school events and sports, or just don’t ride the bus at all.

“We’re seeing if there’s a way we can consolidate anything for kids on the bus,” he said.

Bugg said that included the board sending out surveys to surrounding school districts to figure out how they handle busing, including finding the number of rostered students who ride, number of stops each child is allowed to have and the length of the bus ride.

Currently in Coal City, students are allowed two stops, one to home and one to a child care provider.

And lengthening the bus route time could allow the district to eliminate a bus, Bugg said.

Also, Bugg said another option is to look at eliminating bus service up to 1.5 miles away from a school.

That’s in line with state standards if the route isn’t a hazardous route.

However, that could put a strain on the younger kids going to the early child care center.

“I get nervous with having 5-year-olds walk a half mile to the center,” Bugg said, adding he also will look at asking bus drivers to collect data on how many students ride.

LaSalle Generating Station under Unit 2 refueling outage MORRIS DAILY HERALD MARSEILLES – More than 2,000 workers arrived Monday at LaSalle County Generating Station to work on the Unit 2 refueling outage.

The work completed by the more than 1,400 supplemental workers and 800 permanent employees will ensure LaSalle Station’s ability to provide reliable power through the rest of the cold winter, the hottest part of summer and all the days in between, according to a news release from the station.

“LaSalle Station is proud to be one of six nuclear power plants in Illinois that provide half of the state’s energy,” Site Vice President Pete Karaba said in the release. “Supplemental employees come back to our station year after year to work our outages and help us contribute to safe, carbon-free electricity generation.”

Many of the activities performed during the outage cannot

be performed while Unit 2 is operating. All of the activities are designed to enhance the unit’s ability to provide reliable electricity for years to come.

“When 1,400 supplemental workers come to Exelon’s LaSalle Station for the refuel outage it means additional business for our community,” Executive Director of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce Boyd Palmer said in the release. “These additional workers frequent local restaurants, retail stores and stay at our area hotels. It is a win-win for both parties, and definitely a boost to the area’s local economy.”

LaSalle has two reactors, each of which is refueled once every 24 months.

One-third of the unit’s fuel will be replaced and more than 10,000 comprehensive maintenance and testing activities will be performed.

LaSalle Unit 1 will continue to generate electricity during the Unit 2 outage.

6 Minooka school board OKs bleachers remodeling project

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – After an insurance company inspection found safety deficiencies in Minooka Community High School’s grandstand bleachers, the school board Thursday approved a $469,300 project to remodel the structure.

The biggest problem is the walking surface, which has gaps between the boards, causing a tripping hazard, according to the district’s Business and Finance Director John Bryk. Items also frequently fall through those cracks.

The grandstand is original to the stadium, Bryk said, and was built the same time as the school – in 1969.

The bleachers also are not compliant with the American Disabilities Act, and the remodeling project will include installing a ramp and adding 60 ADA-compliant seats in front.

The foundation was in good condition and not in need of repairs, and the board decided to keep the stands’ aluminum seats and guardrail.

“We will replace everything around the seating,” Bryk said.

The work will be done by lowest bidder RK Sports Seating Inc., of Indiana, for $469,300. It will begin after graduation ceremonies in May, and plans will be completed by the end of July.

“This was created with students first in mind,” said Community Relations Director Dave DiLorenzo, who set up the application.

DiLorenzo said the company he worked with said this was the first school app they had heard of that focused primarily on students. Parents and the community also can gain pertinent information from it.

Previous school communication tools were found to appeal mostly to parents, DiLorenzo said, such as School Messenger, Constant Contact, ConnectEd and even social media, such as the district’s Facebook page.

The school’s new mobile app can connect students to PowerSchool, sporting events, school news and announcements, the cafeteria menu, library databases and more.

It connects with students’ own e-calendars, and can post a school event or even a day when the cafeteria is serving a favorite item on student calendars.

It also has an “Ask MCHS” prompt where students or parents who aren’t sure who mto contact with a question can enter their question and be guided to the correct staff member.

Leah Lines said the organization also has a cookie fundraiser where students buy cookies from FCCLA members, who make and decorate the cookies, then deliver the treats to the recipients. Those profits are donated to We Care of Grundy County.

The students do all the planning and work for the style show. Alison Overton said much of the show is the modeling of the prom fashions, but there also is entertainment, such as skits, which members have to organize.

Higgins said the FCCLA has a special relationship with Sklut’s Men’s Wear in Morris, and Jacqueline Dresses Prom Shop in Oswego, which lends the students the tuxes, dresses and accessories for the style show.

“As a teacher, you want to see them become independent,” Higgins said of the students. “This show gives them free rein. Sometimes it’s the first time they’ve had free rein. They make it happen. ...

It’s a big event for these kids.”

“It will be one of our last good memories of our senior class,” Lines said. “We will take this with us forever.”

MORRIS – Sunday is the annual FCCLA Prom Style Show at Morris Community High School, where teens and their parents go to see the latest fashions for this year’s prom.

It’s a fundraiser, and for $2, anyone can attend.

FCCLA, or Family Career and Community Leaders of America, sponsor and Foods and Consumer Sciences teacher Zan Higgins said parents and grandparents often bring their granddaughters so they can “watch the princesses” and have a special day.

There will be 30 young women and men as models at this year’s style show, along with a cadre of entertainers and two masters of ceremonies – Austin Allbert and Arielle Robinson. Most of the FCCLA models are seniors, with a couple of juniors participating for continuity next year.

Robinson, who will be both master of ceremonies and model, said the planning for the event begins early in the school year. The most difficult part of it is setting a date that has the fewest conflicts. This Sunday best fit the bill.

“It’s our annual fundraiser,” Robinson said. “We pick out a charity each year to help.”

FCCLA members and models gathered during school hours Friday to rehearse a little and to work out final details. Alexa Thorson said the money raised this year will go to the Grundy County Prom N’ Aid. Savannah Carter said the fundraiser helps students pay for prom expenses so that everyone has the opportunity to attend.

Higgins said she’s proud of her FCCLA students for working hard for a good cause.

“We use the money for students to be able to come to prom who otherwise wouldn’t have that memory,” she said, “and that’s priceless.”

“We’ve worked on this since the beginning of the year,” Monica Davy said. “This is our biggest event every year.”

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – White Oak Elementary School students got to skip class Friday to spend time jumping rope for the American Heart Association.

It’s the third year the school has participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event, which raises money for the AHA. “I liked it, [the kids] stayed busy the whole time,” said White Oak teacher Sean Manley, who was there to lend a hand. “I think this is something that every kid really enjoys doing.”

If the red, smiling faces of fourth-grade students were any indication, Manley was right.

Each grade level had 45 minutes to jump rope. Some did single ropes while others did long ropes in groups.

A group of six kids assigned together had to keep one man jumping at all times.

Some took breathers, but others, such as fourth-grader Hunter Rimay, tried to keep at it the whole time.

“I really like jumping rope,” he said with labored breath. “I don’t know why, I just like it a lot.”

The kids did fun things during their jumping time, especially the groups with the long ropes. Parent and teacher volunteers helped them jump double ropes or play fun games, such as four or more kids all jumping at the same rope.

Starting before winter break, students went home with fundraising information for the event, said gym teacher Justin Zink, who, along with gym teacher Evan Wyllie, has organized the event for the past three years.

There were incentives along the way to encourage the fundraising. Wacky rubber ducks were given out for the first donation each student turned in, for online donations, and for donations up to $200.

Students had a great time showing off and comparing ducks.

There were more prizes for higher donation levels. One student at White Oak raised $600, earning a level seven prize, a Smakaball set, plus

“That will be our highest total,” Zink said.

White Oak also is handing out their own prizes once the donations are added up. The top fundraiser in kindergarten through second, and one in third through fifth, will each get to take five friends and have lunch with Principal Christopher Maier at Pizza Hut. The top winner in each grade gets to be P.E. teacher for a day.

In between all the jumping, kids got called out in groups to have a quick snack and a drink in the hallway to cool off and keep up their energy.

The Jump Rope for Heart event helps students learn jump rope skills and how to take care of their hearts while giving back to the community, according to the AHA. This is the event’s 35th year.

Morris Hospital fills We Care pantry MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – On Jan. 30, Morris Hospital donated $750 to help We Care of Grundy County obtain 5,526 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves.

“Morris Hospital has been proud to support We Care and help them serve so many in our community over the years in their current facility.

We will be looking forward to helping Fill the Pantry in the new building next time we sponsor the event and helping We Care reach more people with more services,” John Roundtree of Morris Hospital said in a news release from We Care.

“This is the final Fill the Pantry at our current location,” We Care’s Denise Gaska said in the release. “We are very grateful to Morris Hospital for their consistent

support of our Fill the Pantry and mobile pantry programs over the years.”

In the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care helped 269 families from its food pantry, according to the release. We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning, and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

The food pantry also receives food provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program, which provided spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, beef stew, whole grain spaghetti and whole chickens. Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include LyondellBassell, United Meters Inc. and Brandt Excavating.

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy

Change focus on state term limits The knee-jerk reaction of those who support term limits in Illinois might be to see House Bill 257 and throw their full support behind the latest feel-good initiative.

That shouldn’t be the case.

State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, filed House Bill 257 last month. It would place on the November 2016 general election ballot a nonbinding referendum on limiting the terms of state legislative leaders.

Voters would be asked whether the House speaker, Senate president, and both House and Senate minority leaders should have limited terms as leaders of the Illinois General Assembly’s two chambers.

The legislation falls short on two levels. Nonbinding referendums accomplish nothing but taking the temperature of voters – at least voters who bother showing up at the polls – and limiting leadership terms doesn’t address the larger issue.

We’d rather see lawmakers push to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot. If you’re going to make an effort to get a referendum in front of voters, make it a binding referendum. Better yet, if you’re going to make an effort to place term limits on lawmakers in leadership roles, why not address the real issue and work with Gov. Bruce Rauner to ask voters whether term limits should be placed on all state legislators?

You wouldn’t need term limits for leadership positions if you had term limits for all lawmakers.

Rauner and his Committee for Legislative Reform and Term Limits worked to have a proposed constitutional amendment regarding term limits placed on last November’s ballot.

Ultimately, courts ruled the plan to ask voter permission to limit legislators to eight years in office did not meet constitutional requirements.

We’ve said before in our support of term limits that there are positives and negatives to it – ideally, voters simply would vote out ineffective legislators – but voter turnout has been so pathetically low and the redistricting process is so flawed and corrupt, an amendment is needed.

The best argument for term limits is to weed out politicians such as House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has turned Illinois politics into a lifetime appointment.

Lobbyists and campaign cash are much more effective when they can deal with longtime legislators entrenched in state government rather than Springfield newcomers.

It’s certainly a reasonable argument that it takes time for rookie legislators to learn the complexities of the state government. It also is true that there are effective politicians trying to do the right thing on both sides of the aisle, who would be negatively affected by this.

We’re in favor of the effort to allow voters to decide whether it’s something they want. Lawmakers in Springfield should focus efforts on getting the state constitution changed to address term limits.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Public opinion left out in immigration drive Gallup recently asked adults around the country a very simple question about immigration: Are you satisfied, or dissatisfied, with the level of immigration into the United States today? Are too many immigrants coming?

Too few? Or is the number just about right?

Before giving the results, it’s important to note what that number is. The U.S. awards legal permanent resident status – a green card, which means lifetime residency plus the option of citizenship – to about 1 million people a year, a rate Sen. Marco Rubio calls “the most generous” on Earth. In addition, the government hands out more than a half-million student and exchange visas each year, tens of thousands of refugee admissions, and about 700,000 visas to temporary workers and their families. The percentage of foreign-born people in the U.S. population is heading toward levels not seen since the period of 1890 to 1910.

So is that too much, or too little? Gallup found that 47 percent of Americans believe the level of immigration should stay where it is. Thirty-nine percent want to see it decreased. And just 7 percent want it increased. (The remaining 7 percent said they don’t know.)

VIEWS Byron York Put another way, 86 percent of Americans would like immigration into this country to remain at today’s level or to decrease, versus 7 percent who want to see it increase.

“Americans wish to see current record immigration rates lowered, not raised,” said the office of Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, who has opposed comprehensive immigration reform measures on Capitol Hill. “Yet the president’s ‘Gang of Eight’ immigration bill ... doubles the number of annual guest workers and triples the number of green cards over the next 10-year period.”

Given public opinion, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the bill did not become law.

Gallup did not ask about immigrants who are already in the United States illegally. But a Wall Street Journal poll touched on that question just before the State of the Union speech, asking respondents which issues should be “an absolute priority for the Obama administration and this year’s Congress.” On the list was “passing immigra-

tion legislation that would create a pathway to U.S. citizenship for foreigners who are currently staying illegally in the United States.” It ranked 12th out of 15 possible priorities, with just 39 percent calling it a must-do.

Another immigration-related option, passing reform “that would do more to secure our southern border with Mexico,” ranked much higher, with 58 percent of respondents calling it an absolute priority.

Public opinion is not stopping the administration from plowing ahead with the president’s decision to grant quasi-legal status, work permits and federal benefits to millions of immigrants here illegally.

Many aspects of public opinion favor opponents of comprehensive immigration reform and of the president’s unilateral action. Yet even with that advantage, those opponents sometimes seem unable to make their case effectively. With Republicans now in control of Congress, it’s an open question whether GOP lawmakers can craft legislation that moves the nation’s immigration policy forward while still respecting public opinion.

“You always like to have a lead against Yorkville,” Blumberg said. “You know that constant pressure is coming. Our guys did a good job of handling it. To score 81 points, you can’t turn the ball over very often, and we didn’t.

YORKVILLE – The old Schoolhouse Rock song says that three is a magic number.

For the Morris boys basketball team Thursday night, it was.

The Redskins shot 50 percent (15 for 30) from 3-point range and their Big Three of Austin Patterson (28), Evan Bjelland (25) and Jake Walker (19) combined for 72 of their season-high 81 points in an 81-68 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win over Yorkville.

“I am very proud of and happy for Austin, Evan and Jake,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “They have had some battles in their career in this gym, and to get a win their senior year is great. This is a tough place to win.”

Yorkville’s dominance on the boards in the first half led to the Foxes taking a 36-35 halftime lead. Morris made eight 3-pointers in the first half, five by Patterson, to keep the score close. Then, in the second half, the Redskins (15-7, 6-4) got more rebounds and played better on defense, while the offense continued to roll.

The score was tied at 48 late in the third quarter, but Bjelland scored the final seven points of the quarter to give Morris a 55-48.

Then, he went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line to squelch any thought of a Yorkville comeback.

“We always seem to get off to slow starts,” Bjelland said.

“We weren’t too worried about that. The rebounding was the main concern in the first half, but we did a better job of blocking out in the second half.”

While Bjelland was busy scoring 22 of his 25 points in the second half, Patterson, who had 17 of his 28 in the first half, took charge of the rebounding and defense. He led the team with 12 rebounds, and turned in the defensive highlight midway through the fourth quarter.

With Morris leading 6657, Yorkville forced a turnover and King Davis had the ball on a fast break. He went up for a layup, but a hustling Patterson skied high to block

Consider it a clean sweep for the Redskins, as they claimed the title with a six-game total of 6,947. Senior Jordan Tiritilli led the way, finishing with a score of 1,288, while senior Taylor Warwick rolled 1,250 and sophomore Amy Waldron finished with 1,204.

Other leading contributors were senior Jessica Winter, junior Madison Colasanti, freshman Sierra Haff and senior Ann-Marie Hayes.

These tips can help with mild cognitive impairment Doctor K: My father’s doctor says he has mild cognitive impairment. What does that mean?

Dear reader: Mild age-related memory loss – “Where did I leave my keys?” – is normal.

But people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have memory loss and/or trouble thinking that are more persistent and severe than normal.

There are two types of MCI. Amnestic MCI involves memory loss. People with non-amnestic MCI have problems with other cognitive functions. They may have difficulty with language: They may have trouble finding the words to express themselves.

Or they may have trouble concentrating on a task, or in

MCI differs from normal, age-related memory loss in the kind of information a person forgets. With normal memory loss, people tend to forget things that aren’t terribly important to them. They might forget the name of a casual acquaintance, for example. With MCI, a person may not be able to learn and retain important new information.

They may not remember the name of the new president of

the company they work for.

Or they may forget about the upcoming wedding of a family member.

On memory tests, people with amnestic MCI have more trouble remembering the details of pictures they’ve just seen or paragraphs they’ve recently read. Their memory difficulty is comparable to that of someone with very mild Alzheimer’s disease.

But they do well on tests that measure other mental functions, such as their ability to keep the details of routine activities straight. On these tests, people with amnestic MCI perform as well as people who don’t have MCI. And they perform much better than people with Alzheimer’s. In a person with MCI,

cognitive impairment does not yet substantially interfere with day-to-day functioning.

This is the critical difference between someone with MCI and someone with dementia.

Some people with MCI remain stable for years. But people with MCI are much more likely to develop dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease.

There is no specific treatment for MCI. The following tips can help your father optimize his mental functioning.

They can also help him stave off other medical conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, that can further impact memory and thinking: • Get his vision and hearing checked.

• Ask his doctor if any of

his medications might be contributing to his condition.

• Limit alcohol to no more than two drinks per day.

• Eat a healthy diet.

• Exercise regularly.

• Stay socially engaged.

• Do challenging mental tasks every day, such as solving crossword puzzles, playing games (chess, bridge, Scrabble) and reading.

There is no way to predict perfectly whether someone with MCI will get worse. But your father (with your help and encouragement) can reduce that risk.

A poor bridge player is a man or woman who knows how many tricks are needed, but cannot correctly work out how to get them.

In this deal, for example, how should West plan the defense?

Against four spades, he leads the heart ace: three, two, nine. How should West continue?

In the bidding, North was right to respond four spades. With six-card support, he should shut his eyes and bid game. He has no clue who can make what, so he should go for the game bonus. Even if four spades is failing, perhaps the opponents have missed a lucrative contract.

After the first trick, West has seen 12 hearts; only the four is outstanding.

He should realize declarer holds that card. If East had it, he would have played it at trick one, starting an echo (high-low) with his doubleton.

Given that, it seems obvious to cash the heart king. Under that, East would probably discard the club queen, showing a suit headed by at least the Q-J-10. Then, though, there would be no defense. West would have to cash the club ace to stop an overtrick.

Instead, West should lead his lowest heart at trick two. This forces East to ruff the trick. Then East can shift to the club queen, giving the defenders one heart, the ruff and two clubs.

Yes, East might have ruffed his partner’s winner at trick two -- but not if he trusts his partner. West should lead a loser when he wants partner to ruff.
