Born: July 26, 1924; in Ashland, WI Died: Feb. 4, 2015; in Coal City, IL Irene Helen Mack, age 90, of Coal City, passed away February 4, 2015, at her home. Born July 26, 1924, in Ashland, Wisconsin, Irene was a daughter of the late Harry and Myrtle (Vieracker) Bowers.

She was raised in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School with the Class of 1942. On January 18, 1947, Irene married Kenneth Mack, and together they lived and farmed in rural Coal City.

Survivors include her children, Kenneth (Mary Pat) Mack, Sharon (Harry) Miller, Joan (Richard) Wren and Diane Roy, all of Coal City; ten grandchildren, Debbie (Mark) Crabtree, Judy (Brian) Stevens, Kenneth (Nicole) Mack, Bernadette (Rusty) Partridge, Marti Ann (Josh) Pantaleone-Hintze, Jeffrey Miller, Brad (Aimee) Wren, Kristin Wren, Melanie (Jeff) Sanders and James Nicholas Roy; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Joanne Carlson of Superior, WI; and one brother, Maytor (Shirley) Bowers of Mason, WI; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth, on January 1, 1998; two brothers, Harry and Eugene; and two sisters, Adeline and Elaine.

Visitation will be held on Saturday February 7, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service 11:00 a.m., at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Reverend Walter Carlson from the First United Methodist

Church in Coal City will officiate.

Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Irene will be laid to rest with her late husband, Kenneth.

Pallbearers will be, Kenneth Mack, Rusty Partridge, Jeff Sanders, Aaron Partridge, Brad Wren and Josh Hintze.

MARGARET McGRATH Born: May 19, 1933; in Chicago, IL Died: Feb. 4, 2015; in Dwight, IL Margaret McGrath, 81, of Odell, (Formerly of Chicago), passed away peacefully on February 4, 2015, at Heritage Healthcare in Dwight.

Cremation Rites have been accorded. Margaret was born in Chicago, IL on May 19, 1933, to Celia Gregosanc.

BEVERLY R. PANTALEONE-SERENO Born: Feb. 18, 1930; in Coal City, IL Died: Feb. 4, 2015; in Morris, IL Beverly Rose Pantaleone-Sereno, age 84, of Morris, passed away Wednesday evening, February 4, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Born February 18, 1930, in Coal City, Beverly Rose was a daughter of the late Matthew and Delores (Shear) Pantaleone. She was raised in Coal City, and on June 18, 1955, Beverly married Joseph Sereno, Jr. in Church of Hope in Gardner. Together they have resided in Morris for the past 10 years, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Morris.

Beverly in her spare time took pleasure in painting, gardening, flowers and crafts of any kind.

She especially enjoyed being a homemaker, and was a loving wife and mother. Beverly truly adored her children and grandchildren.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Police Department has joined a mission spreading through the nation called “Below 100.”

According to its website, below100.com, Below 100 is “an initiative that aims to reduce the line of duty deaths to below 100, a number not the [sic] seen since 1944.”

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said he and two of his staff attended training last year to bring the initiative to Morris.

“There’s five tenants to the movement: Wearing your seat belt; watching your speed; wearing your vest at all times; WIN, which stands for ‘What’s Important Now?’ and, remember, complacency kills,” Dite said.

He said the complacency kills tenant is one many don’t think about, but it is relevant in many businesses.

“If you become complacent, it’s not a good thing,” Dite said.

Morris officers are highly trained, but they work the same job, on the same beat that they all know, and with that can come complacency.

Officer Ben Wiechen attended the training with Dite and Deputy Police Chief John Severson. He said the most important aspect of the training was learning about complacency.

“You can get complacent in all types of jobs, and with many of them it can kill you,” Wiechen said.

The safety measures taught with the “WIN – What’s Important Now?” component tells officers to ask what is more important at the time, such as speeding to assist another officer, or getting there alive to help him or her?

“Our officers are the most important resource we have at the department,” Dite said.

“Anything they do to be safe is worth it.”

structors, and they ask you, ‘If you wrap your car around a pole, how are you helping your fellow officer?” you get it,” Wiechen said.

The training, he said, should be part of academy training for all officers before they hit the streets.

“I enjoyed the class,” Wiechen said. “They should rotate this training to all academies, and they should spend at least one day to go over it, especially the young officers.”

Dite said the department has instituted a new policy after attending the training – all officers must wear bulletproof vests while on duty.

“Sometimes in small-town America, officers don’t wear vests. We need to wear vests,” Dite said.

Other aspects touched on the need to wear seat belts. Dite said too many people are killed while not wearing a seat belt, whether an officer or the public.

wear your seat belt, whether you are an officer or the public,” Wiechen agreed. “There are consequences for it, either a ticket or your life.”

Wiechen receives texts whenever an officer dies anywhere in the United States, and far too often it’s a traffic accident or a heart attack. He said all officers need to take as many precautions as possible.

The three also took “train the trainer” classes while there and brought back what they learned to Morris’ officers.

“Below 100” stickers are on each vehicle used by the police force.

“When we came back from training, we placed the sticker on the window on the driver’s side door, so every officer sees it as they get in their car, and it reminds them to be careful,” Dite said.

Animal control ventilation issues continue Committee tables talk on life skills house plan

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Animal Control officials are getting frustrated by problems with the ventilation system in the building, and the company that installed it last year.

“It’s not going good,” Animal Control Director June Krull said to the Grundy County Board’s Facilities/ Law and Justice Committee Thursday afternoon.

Krull said most recently, problems in the air condition unit led to the dog kennel’s temperature lowering to 45 degrees.

The center houses stray or abandoned dogs and other animals and places them up for

adoption.

Temperature problems Krull said a maintenance employee from Precision Control Systems, the company that installed the system as part of the animal control building’s renovation, tried several modifications, but problems keep popping up.

“I honestly don’t know,” Krull said. “The company is changing its story. It says one thing, then something else.”

Krull said the employee has installed a freeze stat to prevent pipes from freezing and worked on other solutions, but something keeps going wrong with other parts of the system.

Representatives for the company couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday night.

Several members of the committee and other officials were dismayed by the news.

“Wow, poor dogs,” Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said, shaking his head.

Debra Jo Kinsella, vice chairwoman of the committee, said she was trying to catch up on the issues.

“For the last two meetings

it seems like [animal control is] having consistent problems with it,” she said.

Krull said the employee is meeting with her Friday morning, and committee chairman Harold Vota directed Maintenance Director Tony Arnold to accompany Krull to get the problem fixed.

However, Krull said the new kennels are working great, and animal control staff are working on a separate space for larger dogs.

Life skills house The committee also tabled discussion for the a plan to build a life skills house for special education students on county property to a special meeting planned for Feb. 13.

The “house” would be a school for special education students to learn life skills so they can live on their own.

The Grundy County Special Education Cooperative and the Grundy Area Vocational

Center are partnering for the project.

The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. and will be at the county administration building at 1320 Union St. in Morris.

County Board members will be invited to join.

“I’m not ready to give an answer myself,” committee member John Galloway said about giving the center a thumbs up on the plan before discussing liability and other issues brought up Thursday.

Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Dearth said the county could be better off selling the land to the center instead of leasing it to avoid liability costs that may come up for the project.

There also was issues with the location of the proposed skills house right next to the administration building.

“I agree the project is a wonderful project, but this committee needs a special meeting,” Galloway said.

County Board Chairman David Welter and the co-op’s board Chairman Pat Halloran presented an update on the plan to the committee, seeking direction on the project.

Halloran said they would like to have the county’s blessings on the project by May. But Kinsella said that wasn’t enough time, especially for county property right next to the administration center that could be sold for good.

She asked if the co-op would be open to moving the project to next year if it took time for the board to deliberate.

“We are looking at all of those options,” Halloran said.

“I understand it’s a huge decision for the county, we would be just as happy moving along that path.”

But for now, the Feb. 13 meeting will focus solely on the project.

Coal City school district prepares for future finances

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City school board members discussed Wednesday how to prepare for potential longterm financial difficulties due to state and local financial hurdles, including preparing for a referendum.

One of those discussions came as the Coal City Community Unit School District 1 School Board approved the findings of a finance committee that suggested the district begin preparations for an education or operations and maintenance fund referendum.

The committee, made up of 15 residents, business leaders and government leaders, also concluded the school district should restructure its bond debt using a balanced approach, and use the reserve fund to complete necessary capital projects before tax levy year 2018.

The reasoning behind the recommendations centered on the district preparing for a funding shortfall at the end of its current five-year agreement with Exelon regarding property taxes on the Dresden Nuclear Power Station.

Dresden, government funding The school district is in the first year of the agreement, which locks in the power station’s falling assessed value at $510 million for property tax purposes until 2019. That means the school district is receiving about $15.9 million each year. But Superintendent Kent Bugg said the time is now to start planning for when the agreement ends.

Minooka Intermediate School’s new Environmental Club will turn the flower bed in front of the school into a butterfly garden with the help of a grant provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Much of the prairie restoration is being completed with help from students and science staff.

“We still have a lot left to do,” Minich said. “What this grant money provides for is buying the actual plants and grasses we need for the prairie.”

Students at Minooka Community High School already use the prairie as an outdoor classroom to study ecology, biology and natural history, but once completed, more curricula will incorporate the native

habitat.

“Students are used to a classroom laboratory, but in science, the nature and the world is our laboratory. By having this prairie here on our campus, it allows students to go outside and experience the relevant fieldwork,” Science Department Head Donna Engel said.

MINOOKA – Monarch butterflies may be losing habitat throughout North America, but come this spring, the insects can rest their wings in Minooka Intermediate School’s butterfly garden.

At least, that is the hope of sixth-grade science teacher Lauren Sowa and the 24 students in the school’s newly founded Environmental Club.

The group is slated to plant a butterfly habitat in front of the school as its first major project.

“We wanted to start things off with a bang and get the students excited,” said Sowa, Environmental Club leader. “Our front flower bed is something that parents, students and staff members see when they pull up to the school. We want to turn it into an eye-catcher.”

Thanks to a $997 Schoolyard Habitat Grant awarded last week by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Minooka Intermediate School can begin the garden project this spring.

Neighboring Minooka Community High School District 111 also received a $1,000 habitat grant to restore a prairie habitat, which doubles as a real-world ecology classroom.

This year, IDNR issued 32 habitat grants. The grants support any projects developing or enhancing wildlife habitats at schools or other public spaces.

“We want schoolchildren to learn about nature through hands-on experiences,” IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal said in a news release issued last week.

Environmental science teacher Matt Minich said restoring the 2-acre prairie, located at the district’s South Campus in Channahon, has been a work in progress for high school students and staff.

The habitat was in disarray – overgrown with weeds and invasive species – until the school decided to restore the natural prairie three years ago when it received its first habitat grant. IDNR since has selected the school every year to continue the restoration work.

Unlike the high school, this is the first year the intermediate school was chosen for the grant, and the school couldn’t be more excited, Sowa said.

The club decided on a butterfly garden after much discussion. Sowa said students were especially concerned with the declining population and habitat loss of Monarch butterflies, documented by the Center for Biologic Diversity and several other scientific institutions.

Aside from its ecological importance, the butterfly garden will add a welcoming touch to the school’s entrance.

“The flower bed has been here for five or six years and it looks OK, but we’re excited to get something awe-inspiring in front of our building,” Sowa said. “Our school is such a positive place, and we want something that’s reflective of that.”

The grant money will purchase all the garden’s perennial plants, but additional donations are coming from parents, local businesses and teachers.

All of the landscaping and much of the design will be completed by the Environmental Club, with help from local experts and parents.

All the students involved will have a stepping stone inscribed with their name placed in the garden, and the school’s Art Club is adding a student-made sculpture, Sowa said.

“Everyone has really pulled together,” she said. “We’re all very excited.”

Rutter, of Bolingbrook, is a guitar player with the touring band Cryan’ Shames, as well as the local band Scramble and The Nightshift Orchestra (a Chicago wedding band). He said it can be a challenge playing with different bands, but it’s a challenge he enjoys.

“I like the comfort of playing with regulars,” Rutter said, “but the stimulation of throwing caution to the wind, it’s actually a fun challenge. ... Everyone brings a little different flavor. Certain people are better at Beatles songs, certain people are better at ’80s and ’90s stuff. As a team, you play to the strengths of the members.”

Even the audience loves it when they mix things up a bit, Romero said, as every musician brings a different flavor to the mix. Romero added he personally enjoys learning from the subs – new music and new music theory, as well as the challenge of playing familiar songs in unfamiliar keys.

“When you play with good musicians, you have to keep up,” Romero said.

In the same spirit of camaraderie, Romero often has been a sub or an addition to other bands, such as local bands The Chauffeurs, The Meteors and The New Invaders.

“If we need a sub, we’ll call someone

up from the musicians’ pool and say, ‘Can you sub today?’” Romero said.

“They say, ‘Sure – and by the way, can you work with us next week?’”

Even when all of Acoustic Avenue’s members are available for a performance, the band may hire extras for certain events. And sometimes, other musicians who attend an Acoustic Avenue performance wind up jamming with the band and becoming subs, Romero said.

Acoustic Avenue’s other core members are Jimmy Herter, of Homer Glen, who plays guitar, saxophone and flute; and Jim Alberico, of New Lenox, who plays drums, keyboard, guitar and ukulele. Alberico is a former member of the local band Vintage Wood.

Morris cheerleaders are set for state competition

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Their season officially began Nov. 1, but they have been working out since the summer. During the competitive season, they are involved six days a week. In the month of January, they had all of two days off.

They are dedicated. They work hard. They are athletes in every sense of the word.

They are the Morris Community High School cheerleaders.

“These girls work hard,” head coach Kristin Sanders said.

“They go two minutes straight of stunts, jumps, yelling and dance.

It takes a lot of athleticism and teamwork.”

Last weekend, all that hard work paid off as Morris finished second in the Medium Team division at the Bartonville Limestone Sectional. That earned the team a spot in the IHSA state finals at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington on the Illinois State University campus. They begin performing at 9:17 a.m. today in the preliminary competition, with hopes of advancing to Saturday’s finals.

“We want to hit clean and make it in the top 10 the first day,” senior co-captain Megan McComb said. “If we make it to the second day, we will just do our best and see what happens.”

During last weekend’s sectional, Sanders said the team posted its highest score of the year. It’s something she’d like to see again this weekend.

“We are pretty young,” she said. “We only have two seniors [McComb and Kelsey Hider]. But the girls are all so talented that

I am not surprised at what they have done.

“We started out the season a little slow, but we have gotten better as the year has gone on.

We got our best score of the year last week, and we hope we can carry that momentum with us into this weekend.”

Sanders is assisted by Ashley Cook and Ali Ergo, and they have what they feel is a secret weapon in MCHS principal Kelly Hussey on their side. Hussey helps with the tumbling for the team, but his main purpose is as a motivator.

“Mr. Hussey has been very fun to work with,” Hider said.

“He’s very helpful.”

Even though they compete together almost every weekend, it’s the down time that stands out for the captains.

“My favorite part of the season has been the cheer parties,” Hider said. “That’s when we just get together and hang out, eat, watch movies. These girls are a lot of fun to be with.”

With the team graduating six seniors from last year’s squad, there is a different look for this year’s club.

“Last year, we had really strong leadership with six seniors,” McComb said. “This year, there’s just two of us, so it’s a little different. We do different routines every year, so it’s been fun learning new stuff this year.

We really like it.”

“I am anxious and excited about Friday,” Hider said. “I know it’s going to be great being in that big arena, but I am going to be sad when it’s over because it’s our last performance together.”

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers 10-year-old pleasure emanated throughout the room. They were so excited, the only way to divert their sidetracked focus was to close the blinds.

As I continued on with my lesson, I laughed to myself.

What is it about snow that brings out the kid in all of us?

Yes, I know. We do a lot of grumbling about it, too, but deep down, the childhood in us reawakens.

A friend of mine told me about her son today. During the aftermath of the blizzard this past weekend, he excitedly hurried out to play. Shovels and dogs accompanied him, through the deep stuff, to the ultimate building site. With un-

bridled excitement, he worked, sculpted, adjusted and built.

Some time later he crashed into the house begging his mother to come and see what he created. Of course, like all good moms, she donned the winter gear and followed her boy to witness the marvel of construction that Mother Nature so generously provided the natural resources for. She then watched him crawl into an igloo, with the dogs, and play. How fun. Oh, did I mention the boy is in college?

Humans aren’t the only life forms who succumb to the power of the flurry. My dog goes wacko, as well.

When we open the door to take her out, and she first notices the snow, she stops.

The first time this happened years ago, I thought maybe fear or confusion set in. Nope.

Soon after the grand pause, her

tail pounds to-and-fro and the bounding begins.

She can’t simply walk through the snow. No, she insists on pouncing like a cat hyped up on Mountain Dew. I throw her ball and she crashes through the white blanket covering the yard. When she finally locates the toy she leaps with incredible might. When she eventually lands, her head lunges into the depths to retrieve the prize.

On her way back to me the only thing I can see through the alabaster beard is her eyes.

It makes me belly laugh and enjoy our time together. Her being so happy outdoors radiates onto my face in the form of a toothy smile.

Apparently all my neighbors enjoy the results of the blizzard, as well. Snowmobiles, four-wheelers, and other winter toys pierce the country

air with engines roaring and people screaming with elation.

It doesn’t end there.

Who else noticed that this last ginormous snowfall was perfect for constructing snowmen? Everywhere I go there is an entirely new population of the winter figures parking themselves on front yards.

Some hold signs, others sport smiles, while even more wear remnants of old hats, mittens, and scarves.

Yes, I understand that the storm that walloped us causes stress, accidents, dirty cars, and a myriad of others ailments. But, it undeniably, inexplicably, causes our youthful roots to burst forth with outdoor enthusiasm. Enjoy your time outside this winter.

Peotone girls basketball team gets revenge on Coal City STAFF REPORTS PEOTONE – Just a few days after winning the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament on its own floor against Peotone, the Coal City girls basketball team had to travel to the Blue Devils’ court Wednesday.

The result was different this time, as Peotone scored a 56-40 win over the Coalers, handing them their first I-8 loss of the season.

Peotone outscored Coal City (18-7, 8-1), 15-12, in the first quarter and took a 30-19 lead into halftime. Both teams scored 11 points in the third, but Peotone outscored Coal City, 15-10, in the fourth to provide the final score. The Blue Devils shot 22 of 32 (69 percent) from the field, compared to a 14 of 28 (37 percent) showing by the Coalers.

The other day, I turned around in my classroom to write something on the board.

This in itself is a terrifying thing for a teacher to do. The antics that possibly take place with a turned back are fodder for nightmares. This one time, though, things differed.

About part way through a sentence I had painstakingly constructed, I heard one word from behind me. Look. The muffled sounds of students turning within their seats caused me to do an about-face of my own. Every child in the class focused their attention out the windows of my classroom. I soon realized what phenomenon captured their fascination in ways I wished I could. Snow.

Who should Bears get to join Cutler at QB? BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush We still have absolutely no idea what Bears general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox think of Jay Cutler.

We assume Fox has determined his name isn’t Jake?

With the recent contract extensions for Al Louis-Jean and DeDe Lattimore, it appears Pace has completed the binge-watching he promised of the Bears’ entire 2014 season, but we have yet to hear a peep about Cutler.

Let’s assume for the moment, because of economics and market conditions, it’s likely Cutler will go to training camp in Bourbonnais in July as the Bears’ starting quarterback for at least one more year.

Unlike the long line of coaches Cutler allegedly has “killed,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains are going to survive past 2015 regardless of what happens with Cutler.

With everything else Pace and Fox have to worry about, why not give Gase and Loggains one crack at the NFL quarterbacks version of Rubik’s Cube?

The question we should all be focused on right now isn’t what do the Bears do about Cutler, it’s what should they do at the position in addition to Cutler?

I was asked Thursday which current NFL veteran the Bears should pluck in free agency to challenge Cutler.

The answer is none. The last thing the Bears need or want is Cutler on the bench as a $17 million backup. That scenario could create locker room, huddle and sideline issues even Henry Kissinger wouldn’t want to tackle.

The reason the Bears need to address quarterback in free agency is their own 2014 backup, Jimmy Clausen, is a member of this year’s class, and it’s unlikely the only other QB on the roster, David Fales, is an answer.

er the NFL coach who drafted Clausen out of Notre Dame with the 48th pick in 2010 was John Fox. It is also worth noting that after playing 13 games as a rookie and compiling a 58.4 passer rating, the Panthers were 2-14 and Fox’s contract was not renewed, allowing/ forcing him to leave for Denver.

After five years of trying, there is no indication Clausen is an NFL-winning quarterback, and the Bears can do better.

The truth is we know little about Fales, but the fact the Bears were afraid to put him on the field Week 17 against the Vikings after spending

almost an entire season with the Bears last year speaks volumes.

The Bears don’t need to give up on Fales yet, but counting on him as a No. 2 has Caleb Hanie written all over it.

There are only two free agent QBs that make sense for the Bears: Jake Locker and Matt Moore.

Locker was the eighth player chosen in the 2011 draft, will turn just 27 in June and he showed occasional flashes working with Loggains in Tennessee on the rare occasions he was healthy.

Minimally, he works as a No. 2, and if he could stay healthy he might even be able to become a No. 1 if this proves to be Cutler’s last season as a Bear.

Like Clausen, Moore’s first NFL coach was Fox after he went undrafted in 2007, was cut in training camp by the Cowboys and claimed on waivers by the Panthers.

Whatever was happening inside that “tumble-down shack” of a church at 321 Azusa St. in Los Angeles, the local newspaper’s editorial powers that be neither were amused nor impressed.

“Devotees of the weird doctrine practice the most fanatical rites, preach the wildest theories and work themselves into a state of mad excitement in their peculiar zeal,” said a Los Angeles Times report.

Worshippers were “speaking in tongues” and claimed spiritual gifts to translate this unknown language, including words of prophecy uttered by women and men alike. Journalists noted that the Rev. William Joseph Seymour – son of former slaves – preached this revival was a sign of the end times and a great earthquake soon would shake California.

The revival began April 14, 1906, four days before the great San Francisco earthquake.

A century later, the Pentecostal holiness movement that began in the Apostolic Faith Mission on Azusa Street continues to shake global Christianity.

“People came from all over the world to witness what was happening on Azusa Street, and they took what they learned back with them,” stressed Elmer Towns, 82, dean of the School of Religion at Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Virginia. “But it’s important to remember that while thousands of people attended those meetings, the Apostolic Faith Mission never had more than about 300 members. This was never a big church, at least not the way we talk about big churches today.”

What mattered was its impact on global Christianity, with the birth of 19 Pentecostal denominations and movements linked to Azusa Street, Towns said.

Today, it’s impossible to study modern faith without discussing Pentecostalism, especially in underground Chinese flocks, booming African churches and among both Protestants and Catholics in Latin America.

That’s the kind of phenomenon Towns began studying eight years ago in one of his Doctor of Ministry classes. The goal, he explained, was to list 50 major changes in Christianity during the past century and then select a congregation that symbolized each trend.

Students cut the list to 20 and researched 10 in-depth, with the goal of finding “tools and techniques” for 21st century church growth.

This also led to his latest book, “The 10 Most Influential Churches of the Last Century.”

In addition to Azusa Street’s role in modern Pentecostalism, Towns noted, it’s also important to remember the movement weakened many racial barriers. A century later, Pentecostalism remains one of Christianity’s most powerful forces promoting diversity in worship and leadership.

Right path forward for Internet is public utility classification Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler finally confirmed Wednesday his proposal to protect high-speed Internet service for all Americans. He will ask the commission to reclassify it as a public utility under Title II of the Communications Act. This regulatory change is the best way to preserve the Internet as a place where users can access the information they want, when they want it. A place where businesses – established companies and startups alike – can compete on a level playing field.

Adopting the concept of “net neutrality” means the handful of existing, but powerful, Internet service providers, such as Comcast, Verizon and AT&T, would be prohibited from charging websites a premium fee for faster access to consumers, while relegating all other sites to a slow lane. Such a two-tiered system could stifle innovation.

The five-member FCC is scheduled to vote on a final proposal by Feb. 26.

So get ready. The fight to preserve net neutrality is winnable, but citizens must continue to make their voices heard. More than 3 million Americans, including many

Seattle residents, flooded the FCC’s website last summer and fall.

President Barack Obama could not ignore this outcry.

Years after promising as a candidate that he would protect an open Internet, Obama finally called on FCC commissioners (whom he appoints) to “implement the strongest possible rules to protect net neutrality.”

The FCC’s best option is to reclassify broadband as a utility, as it does the telephone industry. Of course, deep-pocketed cable-industry lobbyists claim regulations would hamper their investments in broadband expansion and harm customers.

Really, they just do not want oversight.

That applies to a lot of inexperienced bridge players. They learn “rules” like cover an honor with an honor or third hand high and always follow them, even when it is wrong.

Yes, all right, that is what sorts out the good players from the less capable, but usually, especially in the card play, you have only two choices: Play high or low, or discard or ruff.

Take a few moments to consider both, and you are likely to realize which is correct.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads his diamond two.

South takes East’s seven with his ace and leads the spade queen. East wins with his ace and returns the diamond jack. How should South continue?

South’s three-spade rebid was game-invitational.

Declarer seems to have 10 easy tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. So, when East returns the diamond jack, it looks obvious for South to win the trick with his king. Here, though, West ruffs away the king, and declarer later loses two diamond tricks to go down one.

Instead, South should let East take the trick. Then declarer’s 10 tricks are safe, South being sure of a second diamond trick even if East leads a third diamond.

Finally, note that if West could overtake his partner’s diamond jack from an initial holding of queen-third and give his partner a ruff, the defenders would take only those three tricks. **

What started as a “let’s do lunch” friendship has developed into a close, affectionate relationship. Neither of us wants to take this to the next level, but we do want to spend as much time together as we can in the years left to us. We have a very active social life with friends and with Diane’s family who live in the same town.

My daughters, who live in another city and rarely visit, profess to like her and say they are happy I have someone in my life. But they have asked that I be sensitive to their feelings of loss for my late wife, who died four years ago. They don’t want me to share what

of cigarettes a day, but counts it only as one because they are slims. She also has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.

The other day, while visiting with my mom, Aunt Lil started complaining about getting older and said how thankful she is to have my sister and me to take care of her when she’s too old to take care of herself. The two of us gave each other the “Not me ... you” look.

While we love her dearly, when the time comes, Aunt Lil will be off to a nursing home or have private home health care.

Because you don’t want the bother, suggest she involve another trusted family member or a social worker to watch out for her if she’s no longer competent to manage her affairs.

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice of Proposed Tariff Changes Gas Service Schedule Ill. C. C. No. 2 To the Gas Patrons of Ameren Illinois Company d/b/a Ameren Illinois: Ameren Illinois (or "Company") hereby gives notice to the public that on January 23, 2015, it has filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (“ICC or Commission”) proposed changes in its rates and charges, terms and conditions of service for natural gas delivery services throughout its territory in the State of Illinois. The proposed changes are applicable to Rate Zones I, II and III. The changes in rate schedules are proposed to take effect on or about January 1, 2016, after hearings and after the Commission issues its final Order.

This filing is designed to increase Ameren Illinois' gas delivery service base rate revenues by 14.8 percent based upon a 2016 future test year and includes various rate design proposals, and proposals for new or modified services. The rates for delivery service constitute only a portion of the total bill of a customer taking bundled natural gas service from Ameren Illinois, or taking supply (transportation) service from a thirdparty supplier. For the GDS-1 Residential Delivery Service classification, the proposed changes result in 10.7, 25.4 and 10.7 percent increases in the gas delivery service revenue for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively. Under the Company's proposal, for a residential customer using 530 therms annually (or approximately 44 therms monthly), the effect of the delivery service increase and other changes being proposed by Company produce 5.7, 12.5 and 5.7 percent average monthly bill increases (or $2.90, $5.96 and $2.90 monthly) for bundled service in Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively. For a residential customer using 745 therms annually (or approximately 62 therms monthly), the effect of the delivery service increase and other changes being proposed by Company produce 4.9, 10.9 and 4.9 percent average monthly bill increases (or $3.06, $6.41 and $3.06 monthly) for bundled service.

For a residential customer using 934 therms annually (or approximately 78 therms monthly), the effect of the delivery service increase and other changes being proposed by Company produce 4.4, 9.9 and 4.4 percent average monthly bill increases (or $3.20, $6.81 and $3.20) for bundled service.

For non-residential customers, the proposed changes in gas delivery service revenue for each of the three rate zones are: For GDS-2 Small General Delivery Service classification, 19.0%, 18.8% and 12.5% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; For GDS-3 Intermediate General Delivery Service classification, 17.5%, 29.2%, and 11.5% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; For GDS-4 Large General Delivery Service classification, 24.6%, 11.8% and 20.5% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; For GDS-5 Seasonal Delivery Service classification, 20.9%, 18.3% and 18.6% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; and For GDS-7 Special Contract Service classification, there are no proposed changes to delivery service rates.

Customers should be advised that the Commission may alter or otherwise amend the rates or conditions of service after hearings are held pursuant to 83 Ill. Adm. Code. 200, and may increase or decrease individual rates in amounts other than those requested by Ameren Illinois.
