MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Morris police have linked four suspects to some of the burglaries that have occurred recently in the Morris area.

Police have investigated numerous residential burglaries, the most recent occurring during the weekend in the 100 block of Carriage Drive, in the 100 block of Candlelight Lane and in the 500 block of Brentwood Drive.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Tuesday the department has four people of interest being sought in the case.

The first suspect is described as a male, black, shorter, thin build, short/tight curly hair, 18 to 20 years old, possibly seen wearing a black jacket with reflective striping on the sleeves. The jacket may be Polo brand. A photo of this person was obtained from video surveillance from a local business, Dite said.

The second suspect is described as male, black, 6 feet tall, thin build, light skin, possibly seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie and stocking cap with a ball on top.

The third suspect is described as male, black, 5 feet 7 inches, possibly seen wearing a Cubs sweatshirt.

“We put this information out to make the public a little more knowledgeable of what the investigation has revealed,” Dite said. “As with all investigations, this investigation going on is fluid.”

He said as the investigation continues, information changes and what is being provided is what is known as of now.

Additionally, a possible vehicle involved in the burglaries was identified. It is a 2002 or 2003 maroon Pontiac Grand Prix with a rear spoiler, according to a news release from Morris police.

Generally speaking, the burglaries have occurred in late afternoon and into the evening.

The residences were unoccupied and entry was made into

the residences by force, many times through a rear or side entrance door.

Morris police are offering tips to help people protect their homes.

“These are tips people should be doing 365 days of the year. But when there are a rash of burglaries there are other things you can do, for example putting your valuables in a safe deposit box,” Dite said.

• Make sure all house and garage doors and windows are locked and secure.

• Turn on all outdoor lighting or have exterior motion detector lighting operational.

• Don’t just hide your valuables, secure them. Use a bank safe deposit box, large heavy safe (that can’t be carried out) or one that is secured to a wall

or the floor. Jars of change, cash stashed in drawers, and jewelry have been the main items taken.

• Make it look as if someone is home. Leave lights on, the TV on, a car in the driveway, etc. Burglaries have occurred when homeowners are gone.

Some were on vacation, and some only had gone to dinner.

• Be vigilant. You know your neighborhoods better than anyone else. If a car or person looks out of place, call 911 immediately. You are not bothering the police. No tip is too small.

A majority of burglaries are solved by tips from the public.

• If your dogs bark at something outside, look to see what they are barking at.

• With freshly fallen snow, walk around your house and make tracks to your mailbox. If your neighbors are gone, help them out. Make it look as if someone is home.

If you live in Morris and have home surveillance cameras that record outdoor activity, and would be open to detectives reviewing video related to these types of incidents, call Detective Alicia Steffes at 815941-6283. Even if you do not live in the areas of the burglaries, Morris police would like to keep it on file for future reference.

Anyone with information on these burglaries should call Steffes.

Rebecca spent a day last week shopping at some of the downtown stores and having coffee with a new friend. Caleb has explored the various food opportunities.

But both agree the Morris Christian Youth Center is one of the community’s highlights, as are its teens, volunteers and board members.

Caleb was hired as the new CYC director in August, replacing Pete Vienne, who left for a church ministry last year. Caleb said his wife of six years, Rebecca, has taken on important roles with him at CYC. “Pete and Nick [Marcoux] did such a great job with the kids,” Caleb said, “and I think we can bring positive things to the CYC, as well.”

“He’s really awesome,” said CYC volunteer Nate Sgro, 20.

“He’s definitely able to reach out to the kids and get on their level. ... I think teens look for someone they can relate to. I know the leaders had an impact on my life. I didn’t know it then, but I was craving the relationships. I felt like I belonged here. Relationships are being formed here every week.”

Whitney Connor, who has been coming to the center for the past four years since sixth grade, said Caleb has a knack for connecting to the kids.

“He makes it serious but in a fun way to catch everyone’s attention,” Connor said.

“I think it’s a really great thing for the kids around here,” Rebecca said, “and it’s cool to see the local churches banding together. We have a lot of fun here. We’re very accepting, and we want people to want to be here and build positive relationships with other people and with God.” The couple also serves as youth pastors at Life Church in St. Charles, and Rebecca is a college English professor.

Before this, Caleb was youth pastor at Arlington Reformed Church in New York for four years.

“They felt this place was fantastic,” Caleb said of his church friends who told him about CYC. “We lived in New York at the time. We came here and met Betsy [Burnett, a volunteer] and talked to people and thought this place would be good for us and that we could bring a lot here.”

Caleb said he also has family in the area, including a 14-year-old brother and an 18-year-old sister who he’s glad to be near. He grew up in Chicago.

He always enjoyed being involved in his church growing up, he said, but it was serving as a counselor at a summer camp for high-risk inner city kids 10 years ago when Caleb realized he was being called to minister.

“Before that,” he said, “I didn’t want to be up front.

But God had a different plan.

I started hearing from people that I was really good at this, and that for the first time, I excelled at something. To be able to serve God and at the same time make it my work was

It opened me up to this whole new world.”

That also was when he felt a calling for working with youth. Many of the teens he worked with had been through tough times. They didn’t know how or whom to trust, he said.

“I was able to build relationships with them and learn how they thought and how they felt,” he said.

He hopes to bring the same openness to CYC. “Working with kids,” he said, “you just laugh so much.

It’s good to be around them when the barriers are down.

Kids can be brutally honest, too. That helps you look at yourself and examine yourself.”

Mercado said the CYC still meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings for junior high and high school students, with

light suppers or snacks at 6:30 p.m. and programs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There is teaching, games, prayer time and a time to ask questions.

Macie Mossberger, 16, has found the center to be a fun place to hang out since she started attending about six months ago.

“He puts on cool parties and teaches about God in a fun way,” she said.

Last Tuesday, Mercado told the teens the Bible story of Joshua crossing the Jordan River with the Ark of the Covenant and creating memorials of that event with stones. Earlier in the Bible, he said, Jacob declared holy ground on the spot where God spoke to him of the blessings he would give him.

“It was about the importance of where God meets you and what he has done for you,” Mercado said.

Times can be tough, he explained, but if you remember the gifts God has given you, those memories can carry you through them.

Mercado said he hopes to involve the community with the CYC more.

“This is a community center and not a youth group,” he said. “We want to see more kids come from other churches, and have more connections with the local churches and the community. We also want to link with more businesses.”

Mazon is preparing for new TIF district

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MAZON – Mazon village officials drew inspiration from Morris for a new tax increment financing district covering about half the village.

“The reason we got into the TIF district was, we found success in Morris with their TIF,” Village Trustee Jim Matteson said Tuesday. “We’ve seen what they’ve done, and we feel we could do a lot for the village of Mazon with the TIF plan.”

Trustees Monday approved three ordinances that pave the way for a TIF district in the

village: one established the TIF boundary, the second approved the TIF plan, and a third implements the TIF plan.

In a TIF district, assessed property values are frozen at current levels. The difference between the frozen value and the real value as it increases over time is stored in a TIF fund, which is used for improvements within the district.

The hope is those improvements entice development, which would increase the assessed values enough that the taxing bodies for that district

The plan in Mazon is aimed to help attract commercial, industrial and residential interest in open areas of development, especially in the industrial park at the northern end of the village.

But the TIF also will go toward public works projects, including constructing a new waste water treatment plant, as well as improvement and maintenance of several roadways.

“Mazon is smaller, and infrastructure is our biggest need right now,” Matteson said, adding that waste water facilities are near maximum capacity. “Our population went above 1,000 in the last census, and that puts us in a different situation.”

Street lighting, landscaping, curbs, alleys, parks, public green space, recreational amenities, sidewalks, bike paths and other pedestrian walkways are included in the plan.

The TIF district stretches between the southwestern and northeastern corners of the village. Residential neighborhoods in the southwest and central parts of the village, as well as some parks, are excluded from the TIF district.

Matteson said officials hope the downtown area will attract a restaurant and a dollar store or another comparable busi-

ness.

Village Attorney Scott Belt helped the village through the process, which he said included several public meetings, a joint review board and the creation of an intergovernmental agreement with the Mazon Fire District, Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Elementary School District 2C and Seneca Township High School District 160.

The process took about six months, Belt said, and the TIF district is expected to be finalized at the Feb. 17 Village Board meeting.

Belt assisted in the creation of several other TIF districts, including Morris and Gardner.

“It’s a great economic development tool,” Belt said. “There are nice collateral benefits that go along with a TIF district.”

While Seneca Township High School Superintendent James Carlson signed off on the agreement, he said it was important for the TIF to have the right purpose to be a good investment.

“To say every TIF district is a good idea is not true at all,” said Carlson, who has been involved in TIF discussions at other school districts. “If they work hard enough, they can develop this community, and that will help everyone.”

Carlson said the deal in place respects all of the taxing bodies’ interests, which is why he signed it on behalf of the high school district.

“We have plenty of space to expand and build a nice village,” Matteson said.

Village receives 18th Best City for Young Families designation

Community Development Director Mike Petrick told trustees that the site used U.S. Census data information on home affordability, growth and prosperity, education quality and family-friendliness in setting its rankings.

“It’s great when statistical figures display what we already think about our community,” Petrick said after the meeting. “When you add this with some other factors, like Channahon’s number 16 Safewise ranking for safest cities in Illinois, it really starts to show what a perfect place Channahon is for raising a family.”

Descriptions of towns placing lower than 10th were not given, but the village’s neighbor to the north, Minooka, took fourth place and received a small write-up.

According to the site’s Web page, Lake Zurich scored as the best city for young families, followed by Chatham, Cary, Minooka and Lindenhurst.

Other business Trustees Monday also approved implementing programming changes to its utilities data acquisition software by Wunderlich-Malec of Minnesota for $10,410. Trustees also approved a new capital asset policies and procedure manual and increasing the village’s capital asset threshold to $20,000 for all categories.

The Channahon Village Board and Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a joint meeting, open to the public, at 6 p.m. Monday.

CHANNAHON – Trustees are expected to vote Friday on an agreement between Channahon and a developer to build a Thornton’s gas station.

Trustees discussed a draft agreement with Bluestone Retail Partners LLC concerning the development on at its regular village board meeting Monday.

A little more than a year ago, trustees approved annexing property at the northwest corner of the Route 6 and Interstate 55 interchange. The village rezoned it from residential to commercial and granted a special use permit for the planned unit development of a 6,500-square-foot Thornton’s gas station, convenience store, outlot businesses and a hotel.

The agreement outlines incentives the village is offering Bluestone. If approved, the developer will receive tax rebates worth $2.1 million if the frontage road relocation is completed at the same time as the Illinois Department of Transportation begins its own interchange improvements and if the fuel center is opened in a timely manner.

An additional $1 million will go to the developer if it develops the outlots and a hotel within five years of the fuel station opening. The tax rebates would come in the form of tax increment finance district proceeds, sales taxes, fuel taxes and hotel taxes.

“This is an incentive to develop those [outlots] quickly,”

8 Licenses granted for medical marijuana to Will County companies

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Four companies were awarded licenses to grow and sell medical marijuana in Will County, also servicing Grundy County, according to an announcement Monday from Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration.

In all, Rauner awarded 52 licenses to grow and sell medical marijuana in Illinois, including Cresco Labs LLC, a company that has targeted a Joliet site to operate a marijuana growing center.

“That’s great news,” Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante said.

Cresco Labs LLC will be the designated growing center for Illinois State Police District 5, which includes Will, Grundy and Kendall counties.

Fourteen companies had applied. Two companies applied to open cultivation centers in

Grundy County towns – Medicann LLC in Minooka, and Bill and David Mennie, who applied to open a center in Gardner.

David Mennie said Tuesday he was looking further into the governor’s awarded licenses and if it is final regarding their application.

3C Compassionate Care Center – a Naperville-based company – was awarded a license for its selling operation in Rock Run Business Park in Joliet.

Robert Livas, who retired as a Will County judge in October, is one of 3C’s directors.

His daughter Traci Fernandez, who has transverse myelitis, which has left her paralyzed from the chest down, will operate the company alongside Livas, Hugo Fernandez and Kathy Tucker.

Because cultivation operations and dispensaries will receive final approval at the same

time, Livas said it will take some time before dispensaries have product on hand to sell.

Midwest Compassion Center in Shorewood and Greenhouse Group LLC in Manteno also were selected to operate dispensaries.

Greenhouse Group LLC also was awarded a license for a dispensary that will be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties.

Rauner’s announcement comes soon after former Gov. Pat Quinn left office last month without issuing licenses, saying the agencies in charge had completed much of the work and that Rauner’s new administration should finish out the process. Rauner questioned the selection process, and once called the process “rigged,” and subject to cronyism.

Rauner’s legal team reviewed Quinn’s selection process, concluding some ap-

plicants were disqualified without clear procedures and therefore will require further review.

“Any applicant that was recommended for disqualification will be fully informed of the basis for that decision, given an opportunity to respond,” Jason

Barclay, general counsel for Rauner, said in a written statement.

Bacon was invented long before the age of electricity as a means of preventing meat from spoiling. Now, however, in this modern age of canning, refrigeration and cryogenics, we don’t need to make bacon anymore.

And yet we do.

Why? Because we love it.

We’ve recently covered these two tastes in Prep School, so I won’t bore you with the details.

Suffice it to say that these two tastes are related to chemical compounds our bodies crave.

Bacon fills that salt craving because it’s made by curing pork belly in salt. Lots and lots of salt.

Because one of the functions of salt is to draw out moisture, and because water has no taste, the umami gets increased as well.

Unfortunately the sad truth is that most of us don’t get the most out of our bacon. We just cook it and eat it, never realizing that every package of bacon gives us not one, but three useful and delicious products. Let

Bacon also can be used to enhance meatloaf. Here, a woven bacon blanket emerges browned and crispy after cooking, having bathed the meatloaf underneath with its succulent fat. me explain.

Obviously, there’s the bacon itself. Cook it in strips to your desired doneness and have it with eggs or on a BLT sandwich.

(Add a couple of slices of avocado for a “BLAT.” Or, strips of orange rind for a BLORT? OK, I made that one up.)

Alternately, slice it raw crosswise into inch-long, quarter-inch-wide strips called “lardons.” Crisp them in a pan and they’re perfect sprinkled over nearly anything: salads, soups, baked potatoes, vanilla ice cream, chocolate pudding.

Bacon, is there anything you

can’t improve?

Here’s the thing, though: If all you’re doing is eating the cooked bacon, you’re consuming less than half of its original, raw weight. The rest is being wasted.

And we can’t have that.

So, what is that unused portion? First there’s the melted (aka “rendered”) fat. After your bacon is cooked, pour the fat through a fine mesh strainer into a lidded glass jar and keep it in the refrigerator. It has all the same porky, smoky flavor as the bacon itself. Use it to saute vegetables or sear meats for an added element of smoky umami.

Then there are all those little brown, crispy bits that stick to the bottom of the pan as the bacon cooks, like dehydrated clumps of smoky bacon juice.

They can add a pile of flavor to soups, sauces, braises and stews.

Government watches where you drive In the post-9/11 world, our government spies on us. A once-unfathomable concept has now become almost expected for the average American. Many rationalize this imbalance favoring security over privacy with the assumption that if they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to worry about.

However, it continues to surprise just how often, and when, the government chooses to intrude on everyday life. News of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s mass surveillance program is only the most recent reminder of the extent to which everyone is being watched.

A license-plate tracking system originally conceived to keep tabs on gun runners and drug traffickers along the southern border has morphed into a nationwide compendium of America’s highways and byways, and those who use them.

From its justifiable origins, the program has expanded into a national dragnet capable of seemingly tracking anyone who passes within view of the DEA’s 53 cameras or the countless others deployed in collaboration with local police agencies. Data from law enforcement agencies feed license-plate data into the central system based in El Paso, the American Civil Liberties Union has discovered.

While it is true that law-abiding citizens are largely free of suspicion, they are not above it, as recently evidenced by a DEA proposal – since dropped – to scan the license plates, for tracking purposes, of anyone attending gun shows. Such conduct seems to assume criminality from an otherwise legal behavior.

With cameras arrayed along freeways for all intents and purposes to monitor traffic mitigation and for safety, with such an alarming expansion in the scope of this largely secret DEA program, even the most seemingly innocuous programs can be viewed with suspicion in our creeping surveillance state. Americans must ask more of their government about the scope and nature of its security apparatus. If the government has nothing to hide, it has nothing to worry about.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

The words ‘right to work’ shouldn’t scare Illinois SPRINGFIELD – Well the apocalypse is upon us. At least that’s what you’d think if you listen to some politicians and union bosses. For the first time in decades, an Illinois governor has dared to utter the words “Right to Work.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s pronouncement last week that he would like to allow “Worker Empowerment Zones” where employees working for unionized organizations would have the option of not paying money to a union.

A similar experiment is taking place in Kentucky. The idea scares the crap out of union bosses who are reliant on receiving some money from folks who don’t want to have anything to do with a union.

But it ought to be welcome news to most Illinoisans. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in right-to-work states is far outpacing other states.

From 2002 to 2012, the economies of right-to-work states grew by a total of 62 percent, compared to 46.5 percent in non-right-to-work states. Illinois’ economy during that period grew only 36.9 percent.

Illinois’ neighbors, including Michigan and Indiana, have opted to become right-to-work states in recent years. Iowa has been a right-to-work state for many decades. Missouri has been toying with adopting such a law, and Wisconsin adopted a partial

In fact, 24 states have right-to-work laws. Supporters of such measures say it makes states more attractive to businesses and that workers shouldn’t be forced to give money to an organization they may not agree with just so they can hold a job.

Opponents, on the other hand, say it’s not right that workers not paying dues reap the benefits of what the union has negotiated.

Those seem like fair, rationale arguments on both sides. Unfortunately, some in the labor movement have injected a level of hyperbole into the discourse that benefits no one. Just consider the comments of state Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton: “They need to tell the truth about right to work. They need to think about giving their benefits, giving up their health care and their 40 hours.

And if a boss comes up and you’re wearing the wrong color T-shirt and he wants to fire you, you’re just fired.”

Huh? Sorry, Gary, I’ve worked in three right-to-work states and never worried once what color shirt I wore into the

office. And, hey, I also had excellent health care benefits when I worked in Iowa, Nevada and Texas.

And lets not forget 84 percent of Illinois workers don’t belong to a union. Is life really that bleak for those people?

Folks seem just as happy on one side of that Mississippi River community as the other. Iowa workers don’t quiver when the boss walks by or find themselves kowtowing to management.

There is evidence showing that right to work stimulates economic growth.

In 1997, University of Minnesota and Federal Reserve economist Thomas J. Holmes looked at areas where right-to-work states bordered nonright-to-work states. Holmes found manufacturing employment was onethird higher on the right-to-work side of the border.

They are Midwesterners just like us, working hard and providing for their families.

The difference? No one is forcing anyone to give money to a union.

Those who give want to do so.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Last week, the seventh-grade boys basketball teams from Saratoga and Shabbona staged an instant classic, with Saratoga rallying from a nine-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to pull out a one-point win and take the regional title.

On Tuesday night, it was the eighth-graders’ turn, and the two teams put on another tight, hard-fought battle.

Shabbona, the regional’s No. 2 seed, ended up on the victorious end of this one, 3633, to advance to Thursday’s Class 8-3A Saratoga Regional title game against top-seeded Momence. Momence downed Manhattan, 49-33, in Tuesday night’s other semifinal.

Shabbona (14-7) got off to a quick start, using baskets from Payton Cummings, Austin Hatcher and Scott Scamen to take a 6-0 lead. Saratoga answered with buckets from Ethan Heap and Patrick McCabe to make it 6-4. Ryan Lain then scored underneath for Shabbona, and Scamen scored on a drive to make it 10-4 before McCabe drained a 3-pointer for Saratoga. Hatcher, who led all scorers with 18 points, converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 16

Earlier in the season, Saratoga had beaten Shabbona when Shabbona’s big men, Hatcher and Lain, got into foul trouble and had to spend a lot of time on the bench. On Tuesday, both stayed out of trouble and remained on the floor.

“That was a point of emphasis for us,” Shabbona coach Justin Zink said. “We are a very different team when our big guys are out there. We told

them that we just needed them stand straight and alter shots, not go swatting after them trying to block them and getting fouls called. They did that, and it helped us out a lot.”

Patrick Willis got things started in the second quarter with a jumper for Shabbona, then McCabe answered for Saratoga before teammate Jacob Overbeck scored and Dylan Sasser hit a free throw to pull the Hawks to within 1512. Overbeck, who had 13 points to lead Saratoga, made two free throws to start the fourth, and Hatcher made one for Shabbona to make it 30-23. Overbeck then swished a 3-pointer to pull his team to within 30-26 before Hatcher scored Shabbona. Sasser and Hatcher then traded putback baskets, and the score stood at 34-28. Overbeck made a pair of free throws to make it 3430 and Dryfhout made one to make it 34-31 with 2:14 to play.

With 7.1 seconds left, Hatcher got a steal and a layup to put Shabbona ahead 36-31, and Overbeck made a pair of free throws with 3.6 seconds left to provide the final score.

“It’s always a tight one with these two teams,” Zink said. “Our guys have been looking forward to this one since the brackets came out.

Now, we have to get ready for Momence. They have some height, but if we do what we know how to do, we should be OK.”

BARTONVILLE – Both the Morris and Minooka cheerleading squads took part in the Bartonville Limestone Sectional over the weekend, and both advanced to this weekend’s state finals, which will be held at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Morris finished second in the Medium Team division with a score of 88, behind only Bloomington High School’s 88.23. Minooka, meanwhile, finished fifth in the Large School division with a score of 87.93.

In Friday’s preliminaries, Morris will perform at 9:50 a.m., while Minooka will perform at 6:05 p.m.

With a new general manager and coach, and plenty of questions about which players are returning, the Bears are a difficult organization to gauge when it comes to adding free agents, and how much the team will be willing to spend.

We know GM Ryan Pace believes in building through the draft, but you can count on some additions when the free-agency period begins March 10.

Here, we analyze the running back position.

Current Bears situation: Matt Forte has one year remaining on his deal, and he’s slated to collect $8.2 million.

Rest assured, with coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase expected to utilize a run-based approach, the new regime will get its moneys worth from the versatile 29-year-old who has started 107 of a possible 112 games in his seven-year career. They also undoubtedly will be looking to 2016, when Forte’s potential departure creates a void Ka’Deem Carey and Senorise Perry don’t project to fill. Although the greater likelihood is that the Bears seek Forte’s eventual replacement in the draft, there is enough free-agent star power worth discussing.

Dream on: Leave the dreaming to the crop of free-agent running backs, several unlikely to parlay their second NFL contracts into mega bucks despite being at the height of their powers. The position has become devalued, with most teams content to spend mid- to late-round draft picks and undrafted free-agent dollars to find young players to absorb plenty of punishment but little of their club’s cap dollars.

DeMarco Murray, is a classic example. A former thirdround pick, he carried the Cowboys to the postseason with nearly 450 touches and one of the most prolific rushing seasons in league history.

He wouldn’t be on the Bears’ list, and they don’t need a workhorse back, but he’s the crown jewel of this year’s class.

Chicago connections: The

late blooming of a pair of former first-rounders, Knowshon Moreno and Mark Ingram, occurred under the watch of Fox and Pace, respectively. After being selected 12th overall in 2009 and underwhelming early, Moreno thrived in 2013 while working on a one-year, “prove-it deal” with Fox and Gase. A torn ACL limited him to only three games in one disappointing season in Miami, but Moreno wore a lot of hats

in Denver and could be a buylow option who Fox and Pace already trust.

The trade of Darren Sproles from New Orleans to Philadelphia last offseason opened the door for Ingram, the former Heisman Trophy winner who Pace’s Saints traded a future first-round pick to acquire in 2010 to become the centerpiece of the New Orleans’ ground game. Ingram is built to do the heavy lifting Fox likely envisions, and like Moreno, has experience in a zone-based scheme.

New defensive coordinator Vic Fangio over the past four years had a front-row seat to watch the ageless Frank Gore, who at 32 doesn’t fit the Bears’ rebuilding mode, but continues to crank out 1,000-yard campaigns.

Brock Vereen likely will be pushing for brother Shane Vereen, who still is younger than 25 years old and has the receiving chops to diversify any offense.

Other options: Although Moreno, Ingram and Gore are at their best banging inside, C.J. Spiller could bring a home run dimension the Bears’ backfield lacks. Spiller’s speed to the perimeter and elusiveness in space has the potential to give defenses

fits, but it was his injuries and inconsistency that more often tantalized Bills fans.

Spiller averaged six yards a carry during an eye-opening 2012 campaign, and he’s averaged only 133 carries a season during his five-year Buffalo run.

Further illustrating the evolution of NFL club’s thinking with regard to drafting running backs, check out all of the other former first-rounders – who also serve as cautionary tales – who likely can be found in this offseason’s bargain bin: Ryan Mathews, Darren McFadden and Ray Rice.

Those are a sampling of some of the bigger names who should be available. Pace tended to stockpile undrafted backs in New Orleans, however.

If he’s looking for under-the-radar types, Lance Dunbar, a restricted free agent in Dallas, and Tampa Bay’s Bobby Rainey, another restricted free agent, one Pace knows well from seeing him in the NFC South.

Perhaps looking for fresh starts, LaMichael James and DuJuan Harris still are younger than 26, offer special teams value and potentially could be nice fits.

In bridge, talented players know when to apply pressure to their opponents, pushing them into mistakes or causing them to miss their ideal contracts.

In this deal from a social game, what would you have bid with that South hand at unfavorable vulnerability after your partner passed and your right-hand opponent opened one spade?

Most players are more cautious when vulnerable against not. However, opponents will assume you are being sane, not crazy, at those colors. You can occasionally escape unscathed from a tight corner.

When this deal was originally played, South intervened with four hearts. What should have happened then?

At the table, an inexperienced West passed. North passed also, of course, and so did East, feeling trapped. West, who knew his side had at least game values, should have doubled. This would have announced sufficient strength to act and no better call available.

Then East would probably not have passed, although best defense (spade to the ace, diamond to the ace, diamond ruff, club ace and two later trump tricks) would have defeated four hearts by three tricks for plus 800. East would have rebid four spades or five clubs, both of which he surely would have made.
