PATRICIA RYAN Patricia Ryan, 72, passed away peacefully at home in Elgin, IL on January 28, 2015.

Patricia was predeceased by her parents, Francis J. Ryan and Ella G. Ryan of Seneca, IL; and brother in law, John Baily.

MORRIS – Two men were arrested Friday after police pursued them from LaSalle County into Grundy County.

Grundy County sheriff deputies responded to a call for assistance from Grand Ridge police at 10:23 p.m. Friday.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said David Downey, 29, of Ottawa and Christopher Downey, 23, of Marseilles were being pursued for an alleged armed robbery at a gas station at Grand Ridge Road and Route 23.

They fled east on Grand Ridge Road, where Grundy County deputies joined the pursuit.

They continued east on Grand Ridge Road past Route 47 where the road is closed because of a bridge being out over the Mazon River, Callahan said Saturday morning.

“They blew through the stop sign at Grand Ridge Road and 47 heading east; the road dead ends, so they took off on foot,” Callahan said. “We had a deputy on the other side of the Mazon Creek who shut off his lights and got them as they were coming out of the woods.”

The men will face fleeing and eluding charges in Grundy County but were sent to the LaSalle County Jail on armed robbery charges. Items taken were not being disclosed by police.

“We went out last night,” Lawton, 12, of Morris, said Monday while sledding at a hill near the Morris Country Club.

Lawton and friends hit the snow hills Sunday night and even made a jump in the middle of the hill so the sledders could catch a little air. They returned Monday morning.

“They’re good, icy slopes,” said Nate Jepson, 12.

School was canceled Monday throughout Grundy County because of the 11.3 inches of snow that fell Sunday in Morris and Coal City, according to the National Weather Service.

As of Monday evening, most local school districts appeared ready to reopen their doors to students Tuesday.

Snow hills throughout Morris were filled with children bundled in coats and scarves, dragging their sleds and racing each other downhill.

“My 5-year-old has been begging me to go sledding,” said Jackie Brookman of Morris. “We wanted to achieve making a snowman and going sledding this winter and we made a snowman yesterday.”

Even with the snow stopped, Illinois State Police recommended against travel Monday in the area of Will, Grundy and Kendall counties because of icy and snow-covered roadways.

Interstate 55 near Route 6 was shut down for a while Monday because of a crash involving a semitrailer with possible injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. The crash caused a major backup on northbound I-55 just south of Route 6 in Channahon.

Tracey Steffes, Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District chief, said his department responded to numerous calls, including downed power lines and accidents, over the weekend. There were seven incidents where an emergency apparatus had to plow access to stranded motorists, and one fire involving an SUV in a ditch on Brisbin Road.

The fire district prepared for the weather by increasing their firefighters on shift.

A normal shift has seven firefighters on duty. For the weather, 12 were on hand, Steffes said Monday.

No one was injured in any of the department’s calls.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan and Morris Police Chief Brent Dite agreed that it seemed many people listened and stayed off the roads over the weekend.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a few vehicles who slid off the roadways Sunday and a few minor accidents, but there were no injuries or weather-related citations, Callahan said.

Sunday evening saw more single vehicles stranded with the blowing snow drifts, he said.

“We had the luxury of it being a weekend,” Callahan said.

“So there were less people on the road and less people who had to travel.”

“I’m happy people realized it was not that important to go anywhere,” he said.

Power outages also were an issue because of the snow storm. Across ComEd’s northern Illinois service territory, the storm left more than 52,200 customers without power Sunday, but that number had whittled down to 841 customers on Monday afternoon, said Linsey Godbey, ComEd spokeswoman.

Initially, ComEd’s goal was to get power restored to everyone by 3 p.m. Monday, but Godbey said full restoration will need to happen later.

PATRICKWILDA:1981-2015

WILMINGTON – A Plainfield man who died in a construction accident Friday was a popular figure at local midget races in Grundy County.

Patrick C. Wilda, 33, was the third-generation of his family to enjoy open-wheel racing and regularly competed at Grundy County Patrick Speedway.

Wilda “ B e i n g around [midget racing] and seeing all of what goes into it really changed my outlook,” Wilda told the Morris Daily Herald in 2008. “You learn that there is a lot more than driving. There’s a lot of math involved and some engineering. I learned to love the intensity and the speed and all that goes into the sport.”

Fulton, Main Street property to be split

MORRIS – The Morris City Council approved an ordinance Monday in a 7-0 vote declaring a surplus in Tax Increment Financing district funds of $421,100.45.

The excess funds will be turned over to the Grundy County Treasurer to be distributed among all taxing districts in the affected area.

The city has an agreement with the three school districts – Morris Community High School, Morris Grade School District 54 and Saratoga School District 60C – to give 40 percent of what the city brings in from the TIF district to the schools, Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

The money is to make up for the loss of property taxes the schools receive from the frozen property values in the district.

This year the school districts will receive $1.684 million, 40 percent of the TIF funds received by the city. The money can be used for eligible expenses, such as capital improvements or bond debt, Kopczick said.

Another 10 percent is given to the city treasurer’s office to divide up, on a pro rata basis, among all taxing districts affected by the TIF. “This is an annual occurrence until [tax year] 2021,” Kopczick said. “All taxing bodies within the TIF district receive a piece of the funds. Boy Scouts camp through the snow

By BOB BLACK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The origins of an event held in Morris during the weekend can be traced to the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s.

The local venture, called Arctic Blast 2015, was held at the Rainbow Scout Reservation and included 80 Boy Scouts and 10 troops in a hardy test of endurance skills, wits and leadership abilities through various activities. Twenty-three leaders from those troops also were there, as were 20 staff members from Homer Glen’s Troop 63, which served as host.

“This is our version of the Klondike Derby,” said Joshua Jansen, the Quality Program Executive at Rainbow Council.

“They get to show their Scouting skills.”

Jansen said the troops built their own sleds, which were pulled from event to event. They also were used in a sled race.

Klondike Derbies have been around since 1949, and they stem from the Klondike Gold Rush – when prospectors braved the elements in the northwestern Canada region between 1896 and 1899 in search of gold.

“This event started last year in an attempt to revamp our approach to a traditional Klondike type of an event,” Arctic Blast Chair Pat Klein said. “In previous years, each of the two districts in Rainbow Council [Waapi Lenawsa and Ishkote] typically tried to run independent events. The decision was made to combine this effort into one large council-wide event instead. Last year’s event was

such a success that we are back for another year.”

Along with camping, there were 12 contests.

“It was cold but it wasn’t crazy. We were in our tents by the time it started snowing. When we went to bed [Saturday night], it was raining. In the morning, the tree branches were snapping because of the weight of the ice and snow,” Scout Ken Buck of Morris said Monday.

Troop 96’s Nobody Patrol from Plainfield won two of the three categories: overall and the best Klondike sled. Troop 175’s Indiana John’s Patrol from Joliet claimed the patrol flag competition for having

the best and most creative flag.

Most of the troops camped out overnight Friday, and the remaining few came Saturday and camped out that night, as well. Arctic Blast concluded Sunday morning.

Just a few troops left Saturday night because of the weather predictions, but many stayed overnight Saturday, Jansen said.

“It started raining about 6 or 7 o’clock on Saturday night. It wasn’t heavy, but it was a misty rain. It snowed a lot during the night, but by the time we woke up and packed, it had snowed a lot.

said Monday.

“We had no problem leaving Rainbow Council [under the snowy conditions], but when we got home, that was a different story,” he said.

Some of the staff have gone through cold weather camping training, Klein said, which helps them teach the skills to the Scouts.

“This event was designed to provide a fun, yet challenging contest of teamwork and skills for our Scouts,” Klein said. “Additionally, it is meant to show that outdoor events and camping doesn’t stop for the winter. Camping in the winter can be a lot of fun and quite a different experience from other times of the year.”

“It has been pinpointed … that it did begin in the laundry room,” Jensen said.

At 7:26 p.m. on Friday, firefighters with the Gardner Fire Protection District were notified of a fire at 401 S. Jackson St. in Gardner.

When they arrived, they saw the entire north side of the two-story wood frame home was fully engulfed in flames, Jensen said. The first floor of the west side of the home also was engulfed in flames, he said.

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within 10 minutes.

Residents of the home already had left and were at nearby homes of neighbors when firefighters came.

Jensen said they were two adults and four children from the home.

The estimated cost of damage to the contents of the home was $50,000, while estimated damage to the structure was $70,000.

Race for comptroller in 2016 already filling with speculation State Sen. Daniel Biss appears to be the first Democrat to actively float his name for the 2016 special election for state comptroller.

The Evanston Democrat is known as a policy wonk around the statehouse, but he’s also a prodigious fundraiser, ending the fourth-quarter reporting period with $721,000 in the bank.

The special election law was passed by the General Assembly in early January – just weeks after the death of Republican Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. Former Gov. Pat Quinn signed it into law on his way out the door.

If the new law is upheld by the courts (which seems likely, but not 100 percent certain), the state’s appointed Republican Comptroller Leslie Munger will have to stand for election in a presidential year.

Since the days of President Bill Clinton, Republicans have been at a distinct disadvantage during presidential election years. No Republican presidential candidate has won this state since 1988, when George H.W. Bush defeated Michael Dukakis 51-49. Back then, Illinois was considered a “bellwether” state for presidential campaigns. No longer.

Anyway, Biss would first have to survive the Democratic primary. And although no other candidates have yet floated their names, it’s expected that we will see some interest (there’s even some talk that Quinn might be interested).

Biss pushed hard for state worker pension reform when he was in the House and then again after he moved to the Senate. That hasn’t endeared him to labor unions, although I’m told he’s been attempting to reach out to the unions to try and smooth things over.

Biss ran unopposed last year, so the Illinois AFL-CIO took no position on his nonexistent campaign.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

VIEWS Rich Miller Meanwhile, state Sen. Napoleon Harris, D-Flossmoor, has been eyeing a move up the political ladder almost since he won the 2012 primary election to replace the retiring incumbent Sen. James Meeks.

Harris expressed strong interest in running for the U.S. House seat vacated by the disgraced incumbent Jesse Jackson, Jr., but wound up bowing out. Now, Harris is looking at a possible U.S. Senate bid.

Harris is a former NFL player. Many of his former teammates have plenty of extra cash, which gives Harris a natural fundraising base.

Harris also is a successful businessman in his own right.

Harris owns a pizza restaurant chain and paid a hefty sum to make his pies the official White Sox pizza at U.S. Cellular Field last year.

Harris is the first state legislator to express a strong interest in the race. All of the other possible candidates mentioned so far are members of the U.S. House.

One of those U.S. representatives expressing interest in running for Senate is Robin Kelly, who ended up winning that 2013 special election to replace Congressman Jackson (with Harris’ eventual endorsement).

Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk has a moderate (for Washington, D.C.) voting record. Kirk will also have strong support – financial and otherwise – from the majority Senate Republicans if he runs, which appears likely at this moment.

CHANNAHON – If you’re wondering how well Plainfield East played defensively in Friday night’s 45-22 Southwest Prairie victory over Minooka, take a look at a few numbers.

Minooka made 1 of 16 shots in the first half and 4 of 31 overall, 12.9 percent. The Indians misfired on all 12 attempts from 3-point range. They shot free throws well, hitting 14 of 16, but otherwise found the lid on the basket.

As for what offense they mustered, how about one player accounting for 77.3 percent of his team’s points? That’s right, junior forward Joe Butler scored 17 points, including 11 of 12 free throws. Larry Roberts had four points and all other Indians combined for one.

“We saw what Butler did down low last week against Plainfield North,” East coach Branden Adkins said. “He’s very good down there. He’s so active. If he touched the ball, we doubled down on him, and our rotations from there were decent.

“We didn’t shut him down completely. But we limited their 3-point shooters and made it tough for everyone.

If Butler is going to score 17 points and everyone else has five, I’m happy.”

He was all over Minooka lead guard Jon Butler to such a degree that Butler never could get the Indians’ offense functioning smoothly.

“I love to start the tempo

defensively,” Wright said. “We needed to make a statement in this game. There’s a lot of conference to play yet, and we wanted everyone to know we’re still here.

“Joe Butler is a great player, and our defense rotated to him real well. We made them take tough shots. Good things happen when you play good

defense.”

As well as East played defensively, the Bengals experienced offensive issues in the first half, which ended with the Bengals on top 15-7.

In the second half, however, East began converting turnovers and defensive rebounds into fast-break points, and it became a blowout.

“Our goal coming into this tournament was to bowl well,” Minooka coach Frank Yudzentis said. “W e achieved what we wanted to. They beat us and I give a lot of credit to Oswego.

They have a good program and they bowled really well today, but we achieved what we want-

“We were all on the same page and we were all striving for the same goal. No one was worried about ‘me,’ they were worried about ‘us’ as a team and I’m really proud of the girls and how they handled today.”

Jones said the team wants to keep its momentum going.

Minooka has strong bowlers in Nora Russell (all-conference, ninth), Heather McCubbin (all-conference, 13th), Carmella Russell (11th), Kortney Sickler (16th) and Samantha Isemonger (26th), but they want to make it to state as a team, not individually.

“We have to work as one team to be really amazing, and

that’s exactly what happened out there today. I’m really proud about that,” said Jones, who rolled a 1,302. “[This weekend] is regionals and I think that this was a good showing of how we can bowl. We are all good individually, but we have to work as one to make it to state, which is the ultimate goal.”

Minooka will compete Saturday at the Streator Regional at Bowl Mor Lanes in Streator.

MAPLE PARK – It was a split decision for the Morris girls and boys basketball teams Friday night in a Nothern Illinois Big 12 East doubleheader at Kaneland.

In the girls game, Morris raced to a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and held on to claim a 44-43 win.

Kaneland took its first lead, 32-30, with 5 seconds left in the third quarter on a Camri Conley 3 from the top of the key.

The Knights held the lead until a Jessica Ponce (12 points) layup with 1 minute left to play made the score 41-40. Morris (167, 7-3) widened its lead to 44-40 on a three-point play by Julie Jurasits (13 points).

With 30 seconds left, Kaneland freshman Jenni Weber (11 points) swished a 3 from the left wing that put Kaneland behind by one.

After the basket, the Knights forced the Redskins into a turnover with 20 seconds to go. But Kaneland failed to get off a shot in the remaining time.

Turnovers were the difference. The Knights committed 25 to Morris’ 10.

In boys’ action, there was little doubt about the outcome as Kaneland scored a 59-42 victory.

The Knights led 12-5 after the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime. Kaneland pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Redskins 22-8 to take a 43-24 lead into the final quarter.

Evan Bjelland led Morris (147, 5-4) with 17 points and teammate Jake Walker scored 11.

“If you had a part go wrong and needed one, he was happy to help,” Guglielmucci said.

“The Wilda family is well-respected in the local racing community and this young man was another example why. It’s really a terrible tragedy.”

On Friday morning, Wilda was installing roof beams at a warehouse under construction in the 24500 block of Lorenzo Road.

Wilmington Police Chief Phillip Arnold said Wilda was alone in a bucket lift that was extended to the roof when other employees told him to come down for lunch break.

They discovered he was unresponsive.

Other workers lowered the lift and performed CPR, Arnold said. Wilda was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m.

An autopsy performed Saturday showed Wilda suffered some injuries, but the cause of death will be determined after toxicology and police reports

“He was very precise with his maintenance. When [the STARS organization] was testing for new tires, we asked Patrick to do it because we trusted his assessment and feedback,” Guglielmucci said.

South starts with five potential losers in his hand: one spade, two hearts and two diamonds. He begins with only eight winners: five spades, one heart and two clubs. Declarer can ruff his third heart in the dummy, but how will he find a 10th trick?

If the heart finesse is losing, West had better also hold the diamond ace, which is unlikely. If the heart finesse is winning, how does declarer get to the dummy to take it? (To cross in spades kills the later heart ruff.) At first, it looks as though West needs to have the diamond ace, but there is another chance.

At trick one, South must play a high spade under East’s ace. Then, after winning the second trick, he unblocks (cashes) his two club winners before running the diamond jack (or, if West produces the queen, covers with dummy’s king). Here, East is stymied.

If he returns a heart, declarer takes the finesse. If East continues diamonds, dummy’s king becomes a trick. Or if East leads his last club, South ruffs high, overtakes his carefully conserved spade two with dummy’s six and cashes the club winners. Then he takes the heart finesse to collect an overtrick.

Finally, shed a crocodile tear for East. With 18 points, he never thought that his opponents had missed a game. So, instead of passing out one spade, he made the automatic takeout double. **

Dear Doctor K: What is MRSA? What makes it so dangerous?

Dear Reader: We have a brain, and bacteria don’t. So you’d think bacteria wouldn’t be able to outsmart us. But they sure can figure out ways to become resistant to the antibiotics we use to kill them.

In the early days of antibiotics, 70 years ago, one of the most common and dangerous types of bacteria – Staphylococcus aureus – could be killed by penicillin. However, these bacteria soon developed resistance to penicillin. So we invented another antibiotic, methicillin, which killed them.

So far, so good.

Then, these bacteria developed resistance to methicillin.

These bacteria are called MRSA: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA is dangerous because it cannot

MRSA behaves much like other staph bacteria. It most often lives in the nose or on the skin without causing disease. But all staph bacteria have the potential to cause trouble. They can cause boils or other mild skin infections, as well as life-threatening lung and blood infections.

Some strains of MRSA have evolved other threatening features. For example, white blood cells from the body’s immune system normally work together with an antibiotic to destroy bacteria. A hardy strain of MRSA destroys

white blood cells. Other MRSA strains have developed ways to spread more easily from one person to the next.

In the community, spread of MRSA is more likely between people who: • Don’t maintain good personal hygiene; • Don’t wash their hands frequently; • Share contaminated items, such as towels or razors.

But even the cleanest person can spread MRSA. You might shake the hand of a person carrying MRSA, or you could touch an object shortly after a person with MRSA had touched it.

The best way to prevent MRSA and other infections is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If you can’t get to a sink, use an alco-

hol-based hand cleanser.

Here are some more tips to help avoid picking up and spreading MRSA and other germs: • Keep cuts or scrapes clean.

Cover them with bandages and change the bandages daily. If you develop increasing redness, swelling or pain around a cut, call your doctor.

• Don’t share personal items such as razors, towels and sheets.

• Wash workout clothes and athletic team uniforms after each use.

• Shower after you work out.

• Wash sheets and towels in hot water. Dry them in a hot dryer.

Unfortunately, over the past 50 years, MRSA has become pretty common in health facilities. That’s why it’s really

important, when visiting a person in a hospital or nursing home, to thoroughly wash your hands before and after your visit. Follow any instructions posted outside the room, such as wearing protective gloves or a full gown.

Even more unfortunately, MRSA increasingly is found throughout the community, not just in health care institutions.

Certain antibiotics that typically have to be given intravenously (rather than as pills) can kill MRSA. Doctors hope that we will be able to keep one step ahead of MRSA through medical research.
