Kathy M. McCumsey, 55, of rural Morris, passed away Thursday evening, February 26, 2015, at her home.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Morris with Rev. Deb Percell officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St. in Morris.

Born April 25, 1959, in Morris, she was the daughter of William and Donna (Tasdal) Burnham Sr. She graduated from Nettle Creek Grade School and Morris Community High School with the class of 1977. Later she received an associate degree from Joliet Junior College. Kathy married James McCumsey on August

15, 1981, in the First United Methodist Church. They lived all of their married life in Morris.

For six years she was employed at Hornsby’s Corporate Office in Morris and then in 1985 until present, she worked at the Grundy County National Bank as a bookkeeper.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, James; her parents, William and Donna Burnham Sr. of Morris; one brother, William Burnham Jr. of Morris; one aunt, Mary (William) Caisley of Normal; one sister-in-law, Marlene (Lee)Chapple of Valley Springs, CA; one niece and one nephew. Preceding her in death were her grandparents, Edwin H. and Frances Burnham and Herman and Elizabeth Tasdal; father-in-law and mother-inlaw, James and Elda McCumsey; one brother-in-law, John McCumsey.

She was a long time member of the Morris Boat Club, where she served as secretary for the last 20 years and a member of the Joliet Region Model A Restores Club. Kathy enjoyed cooking, attending rock and roll music

concerts, boating and touring with her friends in their antique cars.

CHARLES L. MIDDLETON Born: Aug. 17, 1929 Died: Feb. 27, 2015

Charles L. Middleton, 85, of Morris, passed away peacefully at Morris Hospital on February 27, 2015.

Born August 17, 1929, in Ohio, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mary (Dorsey) Middleton. Charles served in the United States Navy. He was a police officer in Ohio, later working as a truck driver for PPG. He married Anita Lynes on February 15, 2002. The couple lived in Florida before moving to Morris.

• A residential burglary that happened Jan. 28 in the 600 block of North Fifth Street in Carbon Hill. Two plastic storage containers containing several pieces of jewelry and one Pandora Charm Bracelet with 17 charms was removed from the residence.

• A residential burglary that occurred between Feb. 1 and 4 in the 7900 block of Foxboro Drive in Coal City. Removed from the residence were two small jewelry boxes, a Kershaw pocket knife (Ken Onion) Creme and brown Mammoth Tooth handle, and U.S. currency, along with some foreign currency.

• A residential burglary in Goose Lake. The incident occurred in the daytime hours of Feb. 10 in the 6000 block of Deerfield Drive.

The suspect(s) stole jewelry and change.

Callers providing information to the Crime Stoppers Line at 815942-9667 will remain anonymous and rewards of up to $5,000 are eligible for information that leads to an arrest and filing of criminal charges on crime occurring in Grundy County.

Survivors include his wife, Anita; two daughters, Pamela (George) Valentine of Ohio and Lana (Dana) Morse of Morris; 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents. There will be no funeral service for Charles. Cremation rites were accorded. The family would like to thank the Morris Fire Department and EMS for their many calls of service in helping Charles.

Memorials may be made in Charles’ name to the Morris Fire Department and EMS Service. Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.

MORRIS – With a sultry, raw, emotional voice, Jonelle Marie has led the River Road Trio up to the No. 5 spot on the Country Independent charts with the band’s first release, “The Wind.”

River Road Trio members Jonelle Marie, Terry Carter and Kyle Ripsch are an acoustic trio who branched off the locally famous cover band The Clients to showcase an Americana singer-songwriter style.

“We released ‘The Wind’ as our first single in January,” Jonelle Marie said. “It’s about coping with the loss of someone you love.”

She and her husband and bandmate Carter wrote the song together, originally about death, but they discovered the song also spoke of the loss of a relationship.

“It transcends to the listener’s viewpoint,” Carter said.

“It means different things to different people.”

The song is getting play through the Independent Music Network, which has ranked the group at No. 5 due to requests for the song and fan votes, the trio said.

According to IMN, a syndicated version of its show is on the way to more than 500 radio stations in America and throughout the world.

Jonelle Marie belts out lyrics, while Carter on guitar and Ripsch on piano fill in with harmonizing vocals. The trio has set about creating its first album, “Unloaded,” and is dropping singles one at a time digitally.

“We decided to release the songs single-by-single rather than the album because we have found that singles go over better in today’s music scene,” Carter said.

The trio isn’t new to music.

Jonelle Marie, originally from Seneca, has sung professionally since she was 20. She broke onto the airways in 2004, with her first album “Listen” being downloaded more than 200,000 times. Carter has toured with artists such as country superstar Sammy Kershaw and Chicago 90s band The All Night News Boys. Ripsch brings experience from his 10 years with indie band the Cattle Bandits and multiple studio appearances throughout the Chicago area, including country and gospel albums.

Jonelle Marie said the trio seeks a bigger stage and she believes it has a lot of options available thanks to the Internet, opportunities that weren’t always there before.

“We are weighing out what fits us best,” she said. “We definitely want to tour.”

The group said it would also like to break into movie and film soundtracks.

“It’s not all about the spotlight now,” Carter said. “It’s more about the creative work.

We want to continue to do what we’re doing and move forward.”

Gardner Fire District to get advance on TIF funds

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – The village of Gardner voted 3-0 Friday to appoint Commissioner Mike Serena to mayor, with Serena abstaining. The position opened when Mayor Tom Wise, 68, died Feb. 8 at Manor Care Health Services in Hinsdale after enduring an ongoing illness. Finance Commissioner Dick Hileman has served as acting mayor since October, when Wise was hospitalized.

“All I can tell you is Mike was running for mayor, and I don’t want the job, so it makes sense to appoint him,” Hileman said before the meeting.

Serena is facing Gary A. Cox and Donald E. Reed in the April 7 election for Gardner mayor. Hileman said because he is finance commissioner, if he were to move to the mayoral position until the April election, the village would have to move someone to finance commissioner and then fill that open commissioner’s spot, causing a complete rearrangement of the board.

“It just makes more sense to leave the makeup of the board alone and put Mike in that position,” Hileman said.

Scott Belt, the village’s attorney, said the board had 30 days to fill the mayor’s position, and if it was filled with another commissioner, the board would have 30 days from the mayoral appointment to fill that commissioner’s position. Instead, the board decided to fill both positions Friday.

The board voted 4-0 to appoint James K. Riley as the commissioner to fill Serena’s vacant spot. Riley, who ran for the Gardner South Wilmington High School Board four years ago when he still was a senior in high school and lost by 25 votes, already had his eye on a commissioner seat and was running for the position in the April election.

“I love politics,” Riley said. “I’ve helped our representative Kate Cloonen and I wanted to try it myself. I want to join the Village Board and keep making Gardner a better place.”

Riley is running for one of the four commissioner seats up for election in April, along with Robert Wolf, Gerald Vonqualen, Dick Hileman, Terry L. Jensen, Patricia Ann Parks and Edward R. Fellows.

There was no public comment during the meeting.

GARDNER – The village of Gardner voted Friday night in a special board meeting to advance $90,000 in tax increment finance funds to the Gardner Fire Protection District.

This is the second year the village has advanced TIF payments to the district.

The funds will help the fire district handle its high operation costs, due to expenses incurred under previous fire department leaders, and the lengthy legal battles that followed after the ousting of previous fire department personnel.

“They are down to the bare bones over there at the fire department,” Gardner

Finance Commissioner Dick Hileman said. “We advanced them TIF funds in 2014 and we are doing it in 2015 because the fire district has not gotten itself back where it should be after paying all the legal fees.

We need the fire department and ambulance service.”

A TIF district is an area in which assessed property values are frozen at their current level.

Tax money generated from the difference between the frozen value and current value of those properties goes into a special TIF fund to be used to improve properties in the district.

The Gardner Fire District receives a portion of the village’s TIF funds, and Friday’s action by trustees will allow the district an advance

on its next payment.

The village will get paid back when the tax money is received from the Grundy County treasurer. The village clerk will reduce the amount going to the fire district by the $90,000 advance. Fire district board members were not available for comment Friday.

Gardner Fire Chief Terry Jensen said the funds are needed to make payments on the district’s building and equipment, and the advance was the only way the district saw to do it.

“We’ve cut man-hours and reduced spending,” Jensen said. “We’ve adjusted the tax levy and are utilizing grants for protective gear. We will be holding a fundraiser to help offset expenses.”

By JESSICA BOURQUE Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Grundy County Animal Control and the village of Coal City have entered into a new and unprecedented animal control contract.

Coal City becomes the first and only municipality to receive animal control services on an as-needed basis, an arrangement anticipated to save the village money, Coal City Administrator Matt Fritz said.

The intergovernmental agreement – passed at Monday’s Coal City Village Board meeting – was about a year in

the making.

“We had asked them to reduce overall costs,” Fritz said.

“Having to pay on an as-needed basis is something that’s a lot closer to what Coal City needs in terms of animal control.”

Up until last year, Coal City was like most other local municipalities and received animal patrol five days a week.

After negotiating with Grundy Animal Control last year, Coal City pushed its patrols back to three days a week.

After reviewing the number of incidents animal control responded to, Fritz said it was

clear Coal City could do away with weekly patrols.

“The numbers have proved that it has been minimal within the village, amounting to about just over 20 times per year,” Fritz said.

Grundy County Animal Control created a fee schedule for the village. Coal City will pay $100 for calls between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays, and will pay increased fees up to $200 at all other times, according to the agreement.

Fritz said before animal control is called, the village will send a Coal City police officer to the scene to determine if animal control is needed, to further mitigate costs while keeping residents safe.

“They will examine the claims first,” Fritz said.

Animal Control Director June Krull said her department considers population and call volume to determine how many days a week each Grundy County municipality receives patrols.

Patrol services include impounding dangerous animals and rescuing pets trapped in dangerous situations.

Krull said she is happy animal control and Coal City have reached an agreement, and is interested to see how the year plays out.

“This is something new so it’s hard to say how it will work out,” Krull said. “As long as the guidelines are followed, it should be OK.” Also on Monday night, the Village Board heard opposition from some residents

about a plan to burn down a residential structure to make way for a storage warehouse.

The structure in question is at 70 N. First Ave. and will be cleared for a 1,122-square-foot commercial storage building, Fritz said.

After listening to concerns from residents in attendance, trustees approved the owner’s demolition plan. Fritz said the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued an open burn permit, so the board believed the plan was in compliance with the state.

The owner agreed to notify surrounding neighbors and railroad lines before beginning demolition.

“Ultimately, with an IEPA permit, he can burn it,” Fritz said.

MVK students participate in Random Acts of Kindness Week

By MORRIS DAILY HERALD MAZON – Random Acts of Kindness Week was recently celebrated by students at Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Middle School in Mazon.

The week takes place the week of Feb. 14 each year and is a time when all are encouraged to incorporate kindness into their daily lives, according to a news release from the school. Students and staff at MVK participated in thematic dress-up attire each day, teachers incorporated kindness-themed lessons into the weekly curriculum, and each grade level contributed to the community in some way.

Activities included a Reading Buddies partnership where the school’s oldest students were paired with its youngest; valentines were written and delivered to area nursing home residents; a poster contest was held; donations were given to both a clean water charity and The Ronald McDonald House; and students joined Coal City’s “Team Megan.”

Another activity included forming the word “KIND” with the students on the gymnasium floor.

Grade school hosts science fair MORRIS DAILY HERALD SENECA – Students of Seneca Grade School’s South Campus held their Science Fair on Feb. 20.

After months of work, designing, testing and reporting on their chosen topics, students submitted 24 projects for judging, according to a news release from the school.

The results were announced after parents viewed the projects and enjoyed refreshments.

Previous winners, Krista Eikleberry and Jennie Paulsen, spoke of their memorable science club experiences, and the student council Voices students helped present the awards.

The winners of the science fair were honored with prizes donated by local businesses:

Don’t make government less transparent with bill Here we go again. Some lawmakers in Springfield again are taking aim at making government less transparent.

Republican state Rep. Joe Sosnowski of Rockford has filed House Bill 261. If passed, it would end the publication of all public notices in newspapers in favor of government websites.

The legislation states when a governmental unit is required to provide notice by publication in a newspaper by law, order of court, or contract, the governmental unit may publish the notice on an official government website instead of in a newspaper.

You might recall a similar assault of transparency occurred in 2011, when a similar bill was filed. It was unsuccessful.

Proponents of the bill say it would save governments money. The trade-off might seem sensible, but a closer look exposes the legislation for what it is: a stealthy assault on open government under the guise of saving money.

Newspapers, of course, have a vested interest in this matter: The bill would take revenue from most newspapers.

For decades, however, public notices have been printed in newspapers for a good reason: to provide the greatest verifiable public exposure for the money spent.

(Public notices are billed at a discounted ad rate, by the way).

The audience provided by a local newspaper dwarfs the number of readers on a local governmental website.

The legislation’s flaws become more apparent with the realization many people still don’t use or have access to the

Internet, especially the poor, the elderly, minorities and the disabled.

Ample proof exists that local governments blatantly disregard the law when it comes to posting information online.

A recent audit conducted by the Citizens Advocacy Center studied more than 750 public body websites in Illinois.

In cases where local governments already are required by law to post information on their websites, the compliance rates were abysmal.

Only 73 percent complied with posting notice of upcoming meetings, a mere 57 percent complied with posting proposed meeting agendas and less than half – 48 percent – complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

And remember, Illinois has an excessive number of taxing bodies.

Citizens would have to check each one to monitor legal ads, which provide notice of such things as public meetings, budget hearings and government expenditures.

That’s much less efficient for the public than having a onestop source for public notices – the local newspaper.

For people who use the Internet, Illinois newspapers (including this one) already offer a free, online public notice service.

HB 261 is sitting in the House Counties & Township Committee. That’s where it should die. The bill is a risky step backward for the interests of open, honest, above board government.

In Illinois, it’s absolutely the wrong step to take.

Traps in terrorism word games Why has the Obama administration tied itself in knots over what to call Islamic terrorism?

“No religion is responsible for terrorism,” Obama declared at the recent White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism.

And yet in the same speech, Obama uttered the word “Christianity” once, “Judaism” once, “Buddhism” once – and “Islam” or “Muslim” 52 times. If a listener did not know better, he might think there was something Islamic about the extremism that was the subject of the White House conference.

In April 2007, Obama outlined his vision of a postBush, post-Iraq world during an address at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

The speech was missing something.

“Remarkably, he doesn’t mention Islam, much less Islamic extremism,” a Washington Post editorial noted. That was nearly eight years ago. Now, the president’s aversion to the phrases “Islamic terrorism” and “Islamic extremism” has made it difficult for top U.S. government officials to

What about Christianity and other religions? White House spokesman Josh Earnest fell into a variety of holes recently as he tried to navigate the president’s vocabulary requirements.

“We’re very mindful of the fact that a particularly virulent strain of extremist ideology has tried to insert itself in the Muslim community,” Earnest said. Weaving back and forth, Earnest noted that extremism can take other forms, such as in the 2012 shootings at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, although on the other hand “that does not diminish in any way the concern that we have that some extremists have made some inroads into some Muslim communities.”

Earnest’s contortions left some listeners baffled. “You just won’t call it militant Islam or anything like that?”

asked a reporter.

“Well, I think we’ve been very clear about what we call it,” Earnest replied. Still later, yet another reporter asked about a comment from State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, who during a TV interview discussed the Lord’s Resistance Army in Africa. “That’s a Christian militant group,” Harf said, correctly. The question for Earnest was: Why does the administration refer to a Christian militant group as Christian when it won’t refer to an Islamic militant group as Islamic?

“Well, I did not see my colleague’s comments on this topic,” Earnest said, “so I don’t want to sort of weigh in and try to explain what she meant.”

At the summit, Obama said Americans “can’t shy away” from discussing the true nature of terrorism. And yet that is what his White House is doing every day, to the utter confusion of those whose job it is to deliver the president’s message.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – During the first half of Friday night’s boys basketball game between Morris and Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Sycamore, a basket seemed to be the equivalent of Bigfoot. There were rumors, of course, but not many people had actually seen one.

The Redskins (17-9, 7-6) spotted Sycamore the first four points of the game, then ran off 10 straight points to end the first quarter with a 10-4 lead. Austin Patterson hit two 3-pointers for six of his gamehigh 18 points in the first.

Morris, which plays the winner of Monday night’s game between Plano and Coal City in the semifinals of the Class 3A Coal City Regional on Wednesday night, then got a free throw and a basket by Griffin Sobol to take a 13-4 lead in the second quarter. Sycamore finally scored its fifth point of the game with 3:55 to play until halftime on a free throw by Maxx Miller.

That started a 7-0 Sycamore run that included a basket

Ty Sulava made a putback for Sycamore to make it 2314 and Jordan Miracle beat the buzzer with a banked-in 3-pointer for Morris to give the Redskins a 26-14 lead entering the fourth.

Then, Sycamore got hot.

Luckliy for Morris, so did Patterson.

From there, Morris went 6-of-6 from the free throw line and Sobol grabbed a pair of key rebounds off of Sycamore misses to seal the victory.

“It was my last home game, so it was nice to win,” Patterson said. “It doesn’t seem like it should be over already.

“On defense, we just tried to stay between our man and the basket and keep their shooters from shooting.”

Zahn led Sycamore with 10 points.

“It wasn’t a good shooting night for us,” Sycamore coach Andrew Stacy said. “We executed our offense and had good shots, but we just couldn’t get them to fall.”

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MARSEILLES – Will Clausel and Evan Schomer were, again, the only players in double figures for Newark on Friday, but its latest regional championship was much more than a two-man production.

Eight of the 11 healthy players had baskets for the Norsemen in their 53-45 Class 1A Ottawa Marquette Regional championship win over the host school at Marselles Grade School. Coach Rick Tollefson’s bench was particularly effective; Zach Anderson scored

six fourth-quarter points, and Mitchell Schmidt and Kendall Endres had 3-pointers that allowed Newark to take and then add to its lead in the first.

“Zach, Kendall, ‘Schmitty’ – I thought they all played some good minutes,” Tollefson said.

“Zach came in, they kept going to that short corner, he gave us a big presence in there, kind of stuffed that up a little bit. …

Just a great team effort.”

The 6-foot-5 Anderson did not play in the first half, but he entered with the Norse struggling in the third. His blocked shot helped spark an 8-0 run in which the Norsemen

closed the quarter. His points all came in the first half of the fourth as the Norse maintained their double-digit lead.

“I was just trying to do my part,” Anderson said. “I’m not the fastest guy, and this was a fast-paced game, so I just tried to come in, play some solid minutes.”

A Jagar Reed 3-pointer and baskets by Sam Hettel, John Lechtenberg and Michael Sypniewski allowed the Crusaders to chip the Newark lead all the way down to six points with just over a minute remaining.

Clausel then scored the first four points of the second quarter to help spur the Norsemen to a 30-22 halftime lead.

Each team made 10 field goals during the opening half, though the Norse did so on 15 attempts to Marquette’s 22. The difference was at the foul line, where Newark was 8-for-11 – Clausel was 5-for-6 by himself – and the Crusaders missed their only attempt.

“I got those two early fouls, and I kind of got hesitant,” Clausel said, “and then I just, I went at ‘em offensively, and got a few open looks. Got the layups to fall and we weren’t forcing shots.”

Clausel had team highs in points with 15, rebounds with eight and assists with five for Newark (20-10), which advances to the Class 1A Somonauk Sectional, where it will play Ashton Franklin Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

G-SW falls just short in regional upset bid STAFF REPORTS DWIGHT – As expected in a battle of neighborhood rivals, Thursday’s regional semifinal game between Gardner-South Wilmington and Dwight in the semifinals of the Class 1A Dwight Regional was a battle.

Unfortunately for G-SW, this battle went to Dwight, as the Trojans claimed a 62-55 victory to move into the title game against top seed St. Anne.

Dwight, ranked fifth in the state in the latest AP poll, took a 21-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to 39-24 at halftime. G-SW, which finishes with a 19-10 record, tightened the gap to 49-48 at the end of the third quarter. The Panthers made seven 3-pointers in the third quarter.

G-SW’s shooting touch vanished with the third-quarter buzzer, as the Panthers made only one of their 11 shots in the fourth. Meanwhile, Dwight put the game away at the freethrow line, sinking 28 of 38 for

the game. Caleb Boma, who led all scorers with 22 points, went 14 of 14 from the foul line.

Kyle Robison led G-SW with 16 points, while Scott Horrie finished with 15. Brendan Elens added nine points, all on 3-pointers.

April Bloomfield, an English chef best known for holding a Michelin star at two New York City restaurants, The Spotted Pig and The Breslin, said, “Food’s delicate. You have to handle it with finesse. You can’t just be a big ogre.”

Many bridge contracts require handling with finesse. This can involve taking a finesse or two. Alternatively, declarer might have to get the timing just right -- which is also arguably the number-one factor in cooking.

This week, we have been looking at deals in which a tempting finesse is not the right play. Here is a last example that is slightly different because there is no finesse available. South is in three no-trump, and West leads the spade queen. What should declarer do?

This auction is surely the most common in the game.

Declarer starts with six top tricks: two spades, three hearts and one club.

He does not have time to establish dummy’s club suit because he will lose three spades, one diamond and two clubs.

Instead, South must collect three diamond tricks; regular readers will have no trouble finding the right line.

Declarer should lead twice toward the hand with the two honors. So, after winning the first trick with dummy’s spade king, South should play a low diamond to his king. When he wins the trick, he crosses to the dummy with a heart and leads another diamond toward his hand. Here, East’s ace pops up and declarer has his nine winners.

If, though, West takes the trick with his ace or South wins the second diamond trick in his hand, he would have to hope that the diamonds are splitting 3-3.

Dear Adrift: Listen to your gut. If one of Keith’s “friends” was stalking you, your feelings about her are probably accurate.

You have already had at least one child with your fiance. Recognize that Keith won’t change much if you manage to drag him to the altar. If he is telling you now that your feelings don’t matter (“you have no right to dictate his personal life”), I hope you realize this is how his attitude will be forever.

Personally, I wouldn’t wish a life with someone this self-absorbed on anyone I cared about. But if more of the same is what you are prepared to settle for, then all anyone can do is wish you luck.
