Congressman Kinzinger meets Agriculture Advisory Committee MORRIS DAILY HERALD OTTAWA – Congressman Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, met with the Agriculture Advisory Committee on Thursday at Ottawa City Hall to discuss policy issues which affect the agriculture community.

The Congressman formed this committee in 2013 as a proactive partnership to address agriculture issues on both the local and national level, and Thursday’s meeting was the first of the new 114th Congress.

Tax reform, domestic energy production, and infrastructure improvements were a few of the topics discussed. Representatives from all 14 counties in the 16th District were present.

“I am glad to host these meetings of the Agriculture Advisory Committee as our agriculture industry is a critical economic driver for the 16th Congressional District,” Kinzinger said in a news release. “These meetings allow

committee members from all across the district and I to discuss important issues facing our agriculture community and provides the opportunity to share information regarding my efforts in Congress to help promote policies to ensure its continued vitality.”

Ryan Whitehouse of the Illinois Farm Bureau and Agriculture Advisory member, was present for the meeting.

“Illinois Farm Bureau appreciates that when Congressman Kinzinger is back in the district, he makes it a point to meet with farmers from his district. His Ag Advisory Committee is vital to hearing the thoughts of farmers. It’s a great opportunity to listen and then advocate for those issues back in Washington,” Whitehouse said in the release.

At the end of the evening, the Will County Farm Bureau presented Kinzinger with their “Agriculture Support Award” for the work he has done to promote and protect agriculture.

The play, “Barefoot in the Park,” is the second in the Guild’s “Season of Simon” where members are showcasing three Neil Simon plays.

“We don’t bicker as much as Paul and Corie do,” Dugard said. “We’re much more calm.

Corie goes from 0 to 60 in nothing flat.”

The performance is being directed by Judy Miller of Morris and is about a couple who have only been married a few days and are moving from their honeymoon at the Ritz to their first apartment.

An apartment that is up many flights of stairs in a brownstone in New York City.

The apartment, which was rented by Corie, the free-spirited young wife, had never been seen by Paul, the much more stiff husband, and it comes filled with surprises – including a hole in the sky light that allows snow into their home.

“It’s very much like the television show ‘Dharma and Greg,’” Miller said. “The wife is a bit quirky, and the husband is a lawyer who is much more stuffy.”

Griffith and Dugard said playing the married couple is a lot more fun than just being the engaged couple because they are able to be more free as the characters.

“I don’t have to think about what I say. I can say that and remind myself I’m in character,” Dugard said.

Griffith said he is nothing like his character, as the lawyer husband is far more highstrung and frazzles much easier than he does in real life. He was able to carry over one true aspect of himself to the character though – sarcasm. “I have a hard time keeping the sarcasm out of the character,” he said.

“Sarcastic, that’s me, so my character will be, too.”

He said the sarcasm fits well with the play, which is

While the two have both performed in numerous plays, this is their first time playing opposite lead roles who also are a couple. Griffith and Dugard said their characters are not the poster children for a happy marriage, something they in real life don’t have to deal with.

“It’s the first time I’ve been on stage opposite him, it’s something I am able to check off my bucket list,” Dugard said.

Miller said she thought casting the lovebirds as the married couple made perfect sense since there would be no awkward parts of playing a couple, like kissing a complete stranger.

“The awkwardness of touching is not there,” Griffith said.

Their relationship isn’t the only one that blossoms on the stage during the performance, so Miller hopes the public will come and enjoy all the relationships and the hilarity that ensues. “If nothing else, it’s

“Who didn’t love the 1960s and 70s?” she said.

“Barefoot in the Park” is the second play in the 20142015 Morris Theatre Guild “Season of Simon.” The season opened with “God’s Favorite” in November, and the Guild is casting for the next Neil Simon play, “Rumors,” in May.

LOCAL NEWS JJC starts program for industrial, energy careers Job training provided for graduates in petrochemical, nuclear and manufacturing

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College unveiled a new degree program Thursday that will train students to enter local industrial and energy jobs, professions that face potential waves of retirements.

Starting next year, JJC will offer the operations engineering and technician program for students interested in pursuing careers in the petrochemical, nuclear or manufacturing industries.

Program applications will be accepted between March 2 and 31. The highly competitive program has 12 open spots.

The program was developed by JJC and local industry partners in response to a need for more operators and technicians in Illinois. State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said she heard about that need from her constituents.

“I take plant tours and the plant managers would say our workforce has been here for 30

years … and they are getting ready to retire. We are processing a potential huge retirement in this industry,” Rezin said.

Rezin said her district covers areas such as Channahon, Minooka and Morris, and has many energy, wind, solar and chemical corridors.

She spoke with JJC officials about creating a program to meet the need for more employees in industrial and energy companies. Rezin said many students would go out of state to train for those industries.

Russell Coon, Exelon Generation vice president, said his company recruits from Purdue University and the U.S. Navy.

Exelon was one of the partners involved in developing the local program, and Coon said its goal is to create JJC graduates who could compete with other potential hires.

“The people who come from this area, put to work in our area, will help the economics of Grundy and Will [counties].

said the program will train students in less than two years to meet industry demands.

Pakieser said students will have internship opportunities.

Besides enhancing math, science and engineering skills, the program focuses on soft skills, such as punctuality, he said.

“It has the same feeling as being at work … so we want to prepare [students] not just to have the skills and have the critical thinking and math ability, but we also want them having the workplace skills they really need to be successful,” he said.

JJC President Debra Daniels said the story behind the program’s creation is one of passion and commitment.

“I call it ‘50 Shades of Green,’” she said. “‘Fifty Shades of Green’ because it’s about our economy and our areas and providing opportunities for the people who live here.”

Both teams predict Faculty win this year

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community High School faculty has better chances than ever to take home bragging rights from the Morris police during the annual Faculty vs. The Fuzz basketball game scheduled for this weekend.

“It’s going to be a close game, but I think the Faculty, with their young legs, are going to be able to pull it off in the fourth quarter,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said, noting that many of The Fuzz’s key players have injuries or other commitments.

MCHS Superintendent Pat Halloran agreed this may be the high school’s year to get its third win.

“I think Coach Johnson will make sure our young players get more court time,” Halloran said. “I predict the Faculty this year is going to pull out a victory by a late 3-pointer. It’s going to come from an unlikely source.”

“Halloran’s half-court shot at Pontiac shows he still has it,” Johnson said.

This year’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Morris High School gym.

This is the seventh year for the charity game, which the Morris police host for Illinois Special Olympics. Event proceeds will be split between the department’s Law Enforcement Torch Run for Illinois Special Olympics and Special Connections of Grundy County.

Last year, the game raised about $3,000 and The Fuzz beat the Faculty, giving the team its fourth win versus the high school’s two.

Special Connections is an organization with the goal of providing information and resources, as well as social, recreational and leisure opportunities, for the developmentally disabled community, from children to adults.

Environtech Landfill has requested that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) renew the Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) permit regulating air emissions from its Municipal Solid Waste Landfill (MSW) located at 1800 Ashley Road in Morris. Area students place in science contest ‘You Be The Chemist’ challenge held Wednesday in Seneca

By JEANNE MILLSA Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Megha Maroney took top honors in the Grundy County division of the “You Be The Chemist Challenge.”

The event was held Wednesday evening at Seneca Grade School – South Campus.

Maroney, a Minooka Junior High School eighth-grader, was all smiles after taking first place in a rather grueling question-and-answer competition.

When asked how she felt, all she could say was “happy.”

During the months preparing for the competition, she said she concentrated hard on learning the material.

“I made sure I understood what I was reading,” she said.

Coal City Middle School also was well-represented at the competition, with both of its delegates placing in the top three. Eighth-graders Mason Mulcahy and Preston Johnson received second and third places.

Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Elementary School’s Tommy Cahill, a seventh-grader, came in fourth.

The challenge’s most difficult questions involved electron orbitals, Maroney said.

Mulcahy said he felt “pretty good” about his second-place win and said he had the most trouble with periodic table questions.

“I studied every day for an hour or two,” he said.

This is the 12th year the challenge has taken place.

Grundy County has always been well-represented.

The first year its schools participated, Maggie Leake from MVK was the National Winner. Kyle Hanson, from Saratoga Middle School in Morris, was the State Essay Winner.

MVK’s Cahill placed fourth this year and, as a seventh-grader, will have another chance at the championship next year. Last year, he went to state as a sixth-grader,

which is unusual.

“I’ve liked science since I was in preschool,” he said.

“I’ve always wanted to be a scientist.”

MVK’s Mark Mehochko, an eighth-grader, also did well in the competition, although he did not place in the top four.

Like Cahill, Mehochko has had an interest in science ever since he could remember.

“I think it’s been fun,” he said of the challenge. “I have a binder with the study guide in it, and every single day, I grab it and study from it.”

No matter the sport, the team or player with the most speed usually has an advantage. During her softball career, Morris natve Erin Hickey Dransfeldt was that player.

She began her varsity career with the Redskins as a sophomore in 1991. In her junior year, she set the national record for hits in a season (101) en route to helping Morris to state championship. In her senior year, she set the state record for stolen bases in a season with 86. In many cases, state records turn over fairly quickly, every few years or so.

Hickey was so far ahead of the pack that her state hit record stood for 20 years, her stolen base mark for 15.

That high school success parlayed into a scholarship to DePaul University, where she continued to dazzle with her fleetness afoot.

“Erin is still the standard by which all speed players at DePaul are measured against,” DePaul coach Eugene Lenti said. “She was easily the fastest player we ever had. Her speed was intimidating. If the ball bounced twice on a bunt, she was safe.

“What made her special is that she also had the power to hit home runs and triples. She was indefensible. If you played in for the bunt, Erin would rip it right past you. She developed that power over the years.”

Dransfeldt was a thirdteam All-American outfielder in 1997 after batting .425 – the third-best season mark in school history – along with stealing 33 bases, which is tied for first. Her 82 hits in 1997 are also third-best in program history. She also was an Academic All-American in 1997. She led the Blue Demons to three

NCAA tournament appearances including the regional final in 1997. She holds the career record for batting average and singles and is third in stolen bases and on-base percentage.

It’s no wonder, then, that Dransfeldt is being inducted into the DePaul Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, along with men’s tennis standout Ray Cahnman, men’s basketball star Quentin Richardson, women’s basketball star Kim Williams and the 1999 Women’s College World Series softball team.

The formal induction ceremony and banquet takes place at 6:30 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

“It’s definitely an honor,” Dransfeldt said about the induction. “It was a goal of mine, but it’s one of those goals that you have in the back of your head. You can’t go out and attain it. You have to be removed from the sport for 15 years, so for people to still think that highly of you after that long, it feels good.

“I haven’t been back to the school a lot. My family and kids, that’s my life now. But I did go back for the alumni game two falls ago. I didn’t play, though. I’ve had six knee surgeries. My playing days are over.”

Dransfeldt simply bunted the ball flat-footed and was a blur to first base.

“The bottom line is that if ‘Mack’ hadn’t turned me around to bat left-handed and utilize my speed, I wouldn’t have had the scholarship to DePaul and all that came with that. I really owe it all to that decision.”

Speak of Erin Hickey around Morris softball circles, and the conversation usually comes back to one game – the 1992 regional title game against Lockport. Morris won

1-0. Hickey bunted, the ball was thrown away past first base, and she sped around the bases to score the game’s only run.

“I just bunted and ran,” Hickey said. “They made an error and I kept going. The weird thing about that is that Amber Podlesny was pitching for Lockport. I had played with her over the summer with the Orland Park Sharks and I ended up playing with her at DePaul.”

Mackinson recalls that game fondly.

“The thing I remember is the frown on Erin’s face when

I wouldn’t take the bunt sign off,” he said. “After they threw it away and she was coming around second, I was thinking, ‘Don’t mess this up.’ I knew we wouldn’t have a lot of chances to score, so I waved her around and she beat the throw.

“After the game, [Lewis University softball coach] George DiMatteo came up to me and said he clocked Erin at 2.58 seconds to first on that play. He said he wished he would have kept timing her all the way around.”

Wolf sighting may be a good thing for environment By now I’m sure many of you have heard about the gray wolf incident west of town.

I’m not going to rehash that particular story, but instead focus on the larger picture.

Right away when I heard about that female wolf, I heard just as many rumors about controlling the deer population. Internet articles were ablaze with all sorts of government blasting rhetoric. I’m not going to speculate about any nefarious plans lurking beneath the public eye.

Instead, I prefer to take a look at how interference with natural environments always leads to some sort of cause-effect relationship. Humans have meddled with animal populations since the beginning of our existence on this planet. The wolf, along with numerous other species, has felt our impact at both ends of the spectrum.

Before Europeans colonizing North America, the wolf roamed freely and called

pretty much all of this continent home. With colonization came agriculture. This included raising livestock.

Needless to say, wolves can do significant damage to domestic herds. This financial factor, along with the overall reputation as an undesirable predator, led to the almost complete extirpation from many localized areas. The wolf survived by maintaining viable populations throughout Canada and the very northern reaches of the United States. The gray wolf did receive endangered species protection in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan in 1974. In 2003, the wolf was reclassified to threatened in these same regions.

With the near eradication of the wolf, the entire cycle and balance of nature changed. Herds that were normally controlled by natural predation flourished. When these herds expanded, the natural flora in those areas were

over utilized and in many cases, severely damaged.

Probably the most famous case of wolves and the idea of re-establishing a viable population occurred in Yellowstone National Park in 1995.

The elk population within the park was causing serious issues, including those mentioned above. The idea was to bring in some natural predators to help control the balance.

Fourteen wolves were released in two separate groups in 1995. In 1996, another 17 were introduced to the park.

In 2010, there were 10 areas in which wolf populations existed. If you Google the National Park Service and search for wolves in Yellowstone, you actually will find the distribution map along with the

names of the packs and their territories. It is quite interesting to look at.

The reintroduction of the wolves have had a major effect on the elk population, which in turn trickles down to other animals and plant species.

The natural flora started to return, including willows. Because of this, the population of beavers in the park started to rise.

Another animal that felt the effect was the coyote.

Wolves are a natural enemy to coyotes. Before the wolf introduction, the coyote population in the park was massive. The introduction of the larger predator changed that rather quickly. Because of fewer coyotes, the red fox population proceeded to rise. Coyotes are natural enemies for foxes.

The list of effects goes on and on. We could write about it forever. The point is the repercussions of making a single change in an ecosystem can have effects that even the

most educated biologists can’t predict. The wolf population in the areas surrounding the National Park have reached sustainable levels, to the point of allowing limited predator hunting of wolves to proceed.

To be clear, the hunts cannot take place in the park, but on lands outside of it.

Of course, the reintroduction of the wolves to Yellowstone has plenty of critics.

Many say the predators are taking more elk than originally predicted and causing other stresses on the herd as well.

Who knows what will happen? The only thing we do know is as policies change and peoples attitudes and opinions sway, we will continue to try to manipulate Mother Nature. Only time will tell if our tampering will be for the betterment of all living things.

We had no expectations that year. We were all just best friends going out there and having fun playing softball. It was wonderful.”

Kelly set the state record for home runs in a season (20) while playing for the Redskins and went on to play at University of Michigan and in parts of four seasons in the major leagues, including a stint with the White Sox in which he batted .333 with four RBIs in 15 games. The couple now has three children, sandwiching sons Kameron (age 14) and Karson (7) around daugh-

ter Kennedy (12).

“The older kids know that I played softball,” Erin said.

“Kelly talks about it a lot.

That’s the greatest thing about our relationship. We always encouraged one another.”

In fact, when asked once who his favorite ballplayer was, Kelly said his wife.

“If I had her skill, I would have had a 10-year major-league career by now,” he said at the time.

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com Jimmy Butler spoke to teammate Derrick Rose on the phone when the news broke that the often-injured point guard again was facing knee surgery.

“High-spirited,” was how Butler described Rose’s mood.

The hope is after this morning, Rose still will be in that frame of mind.

The team announced Thursday evening that Rose was scheduled to undergo a

meniscetomy to repair a medial meniscus tear in his right knee, which will be performed by team physician Dr. Brian Cole. There will be no timetable for Rose’s return until the procedure is completed.

It will be the second time Rose has had the meniscus in that knee worked on, with a repair attempted in November 2013.

A meniscectomy involves removal rather than repair, however, and the reason for the uncertainty with a timetable is based on how much

of the meniscus actually will have to be removed. The bestcase scenario is usually one month. Rose’s teammates are hoping that the guard is due some good news at this point, considering it will be the third knee surgery he’s undergone since the 2012 postseason.

“I think we’re all optimistic about it,” Butler said, when asked about the possibility of a Rose return in time for the playoffs. “We want him back, and I’m sure he’s going to try and get back as soon as possible.’’

The Bulls played their first game without Rose since the announcement, losing to Charlotte, 98-86, Wednesday night.

It was the 12th game of the season they’ve played without Rose, posting a 7-5 record in that time.

“Just really sad,” Joakim Noah said when asked how he was feeling about the latest injury to hit his teammate. “Angry, sad. He doesn’t deserve it.

It’s just really disappointing.

I feel bad for him, but I know he’s a tough guy and he’s going to bounce back.’’

Even if it is a good prognosis, however, the Bulls players still have some work to do to make sure they can hold onto the No. 4 seed and keep homecourt advantage in the first round. The Wednesday loss wasn’t exactly the best indicator of a team being over that emotional hump just yet.

“Mentally, I think we’re a little bit drained with everything that happened,” Noah said. “But I just know that we’re going to have to play a lot harder if we want to be successful.’’

Noesi optimistic, thankful for support Sox gave him after arriving

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Things got so discouraging for Hector Noesi, he thought it was over.

His pitching career, that is.

The Seattle Mariners had designated him for assignment last April after the righthander had gone 2-14 with a 6.13 ERA over 36 appearances in parts of three big league seasons. “I was down. It’s really hard when that happens and you feel like you lost your career,” he said.

The Mariners would deal him to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named or cash.

The Rangers gave him three appearances and after the White Sox roughed him up in the last one for seven runs in one inning, they claimed him

off waivers.

“The first time Seattle [gave up on me], that was the first time something like that happened,” Noesi, 28, said.

“My head was down. I wanted to go back to the Dominican. But this is part of the life in baseball. You have to deal with things that make you stronger.”

So there were more internal struggles. But pitching coach Don Cooper came to Noesi’s rescue.

“He was out there for half an hour,” Cooper said. “On the bench I said, ‘Watch, we’re going to have this guy in three days. Because I know how we work, how it happens with (vice president) Kenny (Williams) and (General Manager) Rick (Hahn).”

Three days later, Noesi

pitched in relief for the Sox. “When I got here, Cooper talked to me the way I needed to be talked to,” Noesi said.

“It wasn’t just, ‘Go over there and pitch.’ It was, ‘We have to work on this and this.’ I thank the other teams, but they just said, ‘Go pitch,’ but Cooper see things I don’t see.”

On the fly, the Sox stretched Noesi out in major league games and made him a starter. He made 27 starts and posted a serviceable 4.39 ERA. With Chris Sale, Jeff Samardzija and Jose Quintana manning the top three spots in the rotation, the Sox might not need stellar numbers from Noesi and John Danks in the 4 and 5 slots.

But Noesi said he is setting his bar higher.

“No, I need to be better

than that,” he said. “And I know and believe I will be.

I believe I can be like them (Sale, Samardzija, Quintana), too. Every five days from the beginning of the season to the end. I believe in myself. It’s going to be a special year.”

Noesi said Cooper’s enthusiasm has helped immensely.

Encouraged by Cooper, Noesi happily wrote “REVENGE” on his Scott Carroll doodle cap after he beat the Mariners and Rangers.

“Whenever he talks, he says positive stuff, and that has helped me believe in myself,” Noesi said. “It’s like when you cut a big tree down, it doesn’t happen in a day. It takes time.”

Cooper said last season was the best opportunity of Noesi’s career.

But now that the team has been set up to contend, this year’s opportunity trumps that one with higher stakes, and there are important improvements to me made for Noesi, who allowed 27 homers, an average of one a start.

“We’re working on fastball command,” Cooper said.

“There were some mistakes with his fastball, and with his breaking stuff late in the count when he was ahead. We have to keep the ball in the park better. We have to get more ground balls. It’s reasonable to think he can pitch 200 innings for us and man that fifth spot in the rotation for us. He’s big and strong enough, he has enough stuff.

“He’s a very important guy in my mind to get this (postseason pursuit) done.’’

Renteria continues to stay off the radar, presses following Maddon

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – While Joe Maddon runs bunt drills, binge watches The Office and bewilders reporters with words like “ubiquitous,” the other manager the Cubs are paying this year (and next) is nowhere to be found in the game.

Rick Renteria, who was

quickly and awkwardly pushed aside when Maddon became a sudden free agent in October, expects to take a year off from the game for the first time in his adult life despite offers to get back on the field, say some close to him.

“He’s doing all right,” said Cubs third base coach Gary Jones, a longtime colleague in the Padres system who came

in with Renteria last year, and who has been in touch with his friend recently. “He’s a pro. He knows how the game works, and he understands. Of course, it wasn’t a popular decision with him, but he’s in a good place I think.”

Renteria still hasn’t spoken publicly since becoming the third manager fired in four years by the front office that

lauded him less than a month earlier for his work with young players such as Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo in his first year as a big-league manager. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

Maddon has reached out to Renteria, left a message and said again Thursday he hasn’t heard from him.

Epstein called Renteria “a prince” for the way he handled it and called the process “painful” but couldn’t pass up the chance to hire Maddon – a move so aggressive the league continues to investigate tampering charges leveled by the Rays.

OPINION Blasphemy iceberg bigger than Hebdo The drama began when a Pakistani politician named Salman Taseer criticized the land’s blasphemy laws that were being used to condemn Asia Bibi, a Christian.

This led to a man named Malik Qadri firing 20 rounds into Taseer’s back, according to witnesses, while security guards assigned to the Punjab governor stood and watched the assassination. When Qadri went to trial, cheering crowds showered him with rose petals. Later, radicals threatened the judge who found Qadri guilty. The judge, of course, had committed blasphemy by passing judgment on the man who killed a Muslim politician who – by criticizing the blasphemy laws and defending an apostate – had committed blasphemy.

“Then you get the question: Can you defend the judge or would that be blasphemous?

We are starting to get here very like a Monty Python element,” noted human rights scholar Paul Marshall, speaking on “Charlie Hebdo, Free Speech and Freedom of Religion” at The King’s College in New York City.

This kind of tragedy on the other side of the world is not what most Americans and Europeans think of when they worry about violence inspired by accusations of blasphemy, said Marshall, who currently teaches at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta, Indonesia. Instead, most people think of the recent attempt to kill cartoonist Lars Vilks during a Copenhagen free-speech forum, the slaughter of the Charlie Hebdo magazine staff in Paris or the murder of “Submission” filmmaker Theo van Gogh in broad daylight on a busy street in Amsterdam.

VIEWS Terry Mattingly “People in the West tend to notice these things only when they happen in the West,” said Marshall, co-author of “Silenced: How Apostasy and Blasphemy Codes are Choking Freedom Worldwide,” with Nina Shea, a Hudson Institute colleague. It’s crucial to understand that the Charlie Hebdo attack and similar cases are, he added, “markedly atypical of accusations of blasphemy or insulting Islam, worldwide. ... This is a worldwide, global phenomenon, and the things of which we are aware are simply the tip of a very large iceberg.”

Of course, people can act because of motivations that are both political and religious, stressed Marshall. “In order for a government to manipulate a sentiment ... the sentiment has to be there in the first place. You can’t stoke people’s religious beliefs unless they’ve got religious beliefs.

“When politics and religion are intertwined, as they necessarily are in debates about blasphemy,” he said, “then without religious debate, there can be no political debate. Without religious disagreement, there can be no political disagreement, and without religious freedom, there can be no political freedom.”

VA secretary should know better on lying about one’s service Really? The secretary of Veterans Affairs?

Surely there is no one who should better understand how offensive it is to lie about one’s military service than the secretary of Veterans Affairs. Yet that’s exactly what Robert McDonald did the night he participated in the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count in January. While chatting with a homeless man on skid row who said he had served in the elite special forces, McDonald responded, “Special forces? What years? I was in special forces.”

In fact, McDonald, who graduated from West Point and did serve in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, was never a member of special forces. This week, he apologized, telling the Huffington Post, which first reported his false claim, that he “reacted spontaneously.”

The White House described his claim as a “misstatement” and said McDonald “never intended to misrepresent his military service.”

Of course it’s hard to know for sure what a person “intended,” but the fact remains that McDonald did – clearly and unequivocally – misrepresent his military service.

You might even say he lied about it.

NBC News anchor Brian Williams got in trouble this month for his false claim that he had been on a military helicopter shot down in Iraq. He was taken to task because, after

all, what does a newsman have if not his credibility? McDonald, too, has a standard to live up to: He is a public servant, a member of the president’s Cabinet, the liaison of the U.S. government to those former members of the armed services who fought for their country. As a national leader, he has a responsibility to stick to the truth.

In his defense, McDonald didn’t go as far as some others have. He didn’t repeat the untruth over and over or peddle it on his resume. He didn’t wear a medal or decoration he didn’t earn – an act so offensive that Congress passed a law against it in 2013 (only to see it struck down by the Supreme Court on free speech grounds). One veterans group has already given McDonald the benefit of the doubt, noting that the misstatement occurred while McDonald was “directly engaging one of many homeless veterans in the West Los Angeles area.”

We’re also in favor of engagement between the VA and homeless veterans. The secretary has his work cut out for him to earn back the trust of veterans frustrated by his department’s recent scandal over months-long wait times for care and its bad record of caring for veterans. But it doesn’t seem too much to ask that when directly engaging with veterans, he does so honestly.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Surely the English have not lost their subtle humor. British understatement cannot be a thing of the past, can it?

This week, we have been looking at some deals that might at first glance appear to involve a finesse, but have in fact required leading twice toward the hand with the two honors. Is this another example?

South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen. How should South plan the play? Faites vos jeux.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. Obviously, he will have to take three diamond tricks to reach nine. And, it must be admitted, on many deals, starting the suit by leading a sneaky jack from hand will not hurt. First, the suit might split 3-2.

Second, that play might gain, when West starts with king-doubleton and fails to cover an honor with an honor.

But assuming there is no misdefense, it cannot gain to lead the jack first, and it might cost. Imagine West or East has a singleton king. Or look at today’s layout.

This is another case of leading twice toward the hand with the two honors. After taking the first trick, declarer should lead a diamond to dummy’s ace and return a diamond toward his hand. Here, East will probably play low. South wins with his queen, notes West’s discard, returns to dummy with a heart, and leads another diamond through East to get home. **

Human bodies have evolved to thrive on plant-based diets Dear Dr. K: I’m trying to shift to a more plant-based diet and have added more fruits and vegetables to my meals and snacks.

What’s the next step?

Dear Reader: Congratulations! You’ve already made some healthy changes to your diet. Evidence continues to mount that a plant-based diet – rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy plant oils – may help reduce the risk of many health concerns, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

Adding fresh fruits and vegetables, as you’ve done, is a great first step. The next step is to incorporate more nuts, seeds and legumes into your meals and snacks.

These days, all sorts of nuts,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff from almonds and hazelnuts to walnuts and pistachios, are readily available. You also can find seeds, including pumpkin, sunflower, flax and chia seeds, in most grocery stores.

Legumes include the spectrum of beans: black, soybean, navy, lima, chickpea (garbanzo), red, great northern, pinto, fava and kidney. Peas and lentils are legumes, as are peanuts.

Nuts and seeds provide healthy mono- and polyunsaturated plant oils as well as protein. Legumes are filling

and also contain lean protein.

All of these foods are packed with vitamins and minerals.

These foods are chock-full of nutrients: “good” fats and carbs, protein, vitamins and antioxidants. Still, all food contains calories, even healthy food. So portion control is key.

For example, nuts and seeds are rich in vegetable oils, which pack nine calories per gram.

Just a handful of nuts contains 160 to 190 calories and 3 to 7 grams of protein.

Legumes generally contain more carbohydrates than nuts and seeds, but a roughly similar amount of protein per serving. A half-cup serving of cooked beans contains 115 to 125 calories and 7 to 9 grams of protein.

Try not to obsess over exact portions. A loose handful of nuts can be a healthy “dose” on your morning cereal, yogurt or oatmeal. So can a heaping tablespoon of sunflower or chia seeds. A handful of cooked beans on a salad also is a healthy meal-enhancer. That’s my lunch, nearly every day.

Add nuts, seeds and legumes to your diet gradually. Start by incorporating them into foods you already enjoy.

To get the full benefit of a plant-based diet, substitute plant-based proteins for some of your usual intake of red and processed meat. For example, substitute kidney beans for half the meat next time you make tacos. Sprinkle pumpkin seeds on your salad in place of shredded

cheese. Or eat an almond butter sandwich for lunch instead of the usual ham and Swiss.

Why is a plant-based diet so healthy? Because that’s been the main diet of human beings throughout our existence. Our bodies evolved to expect such a diet. Meat meals were not common fare. And foods with refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats (such as trans fats) were virtually non-existent. The diets we’ve developed in the past two centuries, in developed nations, are not what we were built to eat – and are not good for our health.
