Audrey B. Berg (nee Freye), age 88, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born September 4, 1926, to Albert Freye and Lillian (nee Geske) Mize and raised by extended family in the Joliet area.

Survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Orland Berg; daughter, Karen of Overland Park, Kansas; son, James (Connie) of Minooka; one grandson, Christopher (Aimee) of Minooka; one granddaughter, Sheri (Eddie) Chartrand of Joliet; three great-grandchildren, Dawson Berg, Sophia and Benjamin Chartrand; two brothers, Lawrence (Sharon) and Fredrick (Billy) Mize and several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceded in death by an infant daughter; her parents; step-father, Clifford Mize; sister, Beverly (Poppe); and brothers, Albert and Richard Freye.

Audrey and Orland met while they were both working for the Frankfort Sale Plane Company prior to Orland’s deployment.

Audrey and Orland were married after his return from WWII, February 15, 1947, where they moved to the rural Plattville/ Minooka area where Audrey lived independently with her husband until her death. Retired from the USDA-Kendall County ASCS Office after 22 years. She is an honorary member of the USS Samuel B. Roberts, in memory of her father who was killed in combat during WWII. Audrey B. Berg will lie in state

at Plattville Lutheran Church, 5475 Bell Road, Minooka, IL 60447, on Thursday, February 26, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. until time of her funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Bret Reedy officiating. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Corey Johnson, a kind soul, went to be with the lord on Saturday February 21, 2015. Born on January 6, 1997, he was the son of Scott and Susan (Field) Johnson.

Corey was the families pride

and joy. He played baseball throughout his childhood.

His dad coached and mentored him to be a great pitcher. His true passions were playing the bass guitar and basketball. He always tried to challenge himself to jump higher, run faster and make as many 3 point shots as he could. He quickly and effortlessly learned songs and performed them with perfection on the bass guitar.

He also liked to lift weights, play in his band, swim, jog, play video games and go on the family vacations. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially looked forward to spending the night at one of his grandma’s house and spending time with his little brother Cameron. Although they had different interests, they loved each other and were best buds.

Corey respected and found pleasure in conversing with adults especially his uncle Martin and uncle Dennis. He looked up to his older cousin’s and his younger cousins looked up to him.

He always missed his best friend Matthew who eventually moved to Texas. Corey was a kind soul and believed in God. He always had a spiritual side to him since he was young. He was baptized and a member of the First Baptist Church in Coal City.

He once said “I want a suit like Pastor Avery’s.”

Corey is survived by his parents, Scott and Susan Johnson; grandmother, Mary Lou (Leon) Field-Wirt; and grandmother, Regina Johnson; brother, Cameron

Johnson; great uncles, Red (Gail) Dennison; aunt, Judy (Martin) Potorny; aunt, Kim Field; uncle, Dennis (Stephanie) Field; uncle, Roy Johnson Jr.; aunt, Terry Bednarz; aunt, Vanessa (Tony) Seisser; uncle, Curt Phillips; cousins, Prestyn Miller, Christopher and Connor Speakman, Aaron Field, Suzanne and Sarah Field, and Jessica (Allen) Bednarz and Josh Bednarz.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather’s, Charles Field and Roy Johnson; uncles, Chuck and Jack Dennison and Dick Neverman; and best friend, Kyale Brown. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 West Washington Street in Morris. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the First Baptist Church located on Route 113 in Coal City, with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and service immediately following.

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The race for 2nd Ward Alderman was a close one Tuesday night, but according to unofficial results the ward appears to have a new alderman.

According to the unofficial results, Republican incumbent Julian Houston appears to have lost the election for 2nd Ward Alderman. According to unofficial results from the Grundy Doug County Clerk’s office, Hayse write-in votes came in at 227 and Houston’s votes at 136. The writein candidate running against Houston was former Morris police chief Doug Hayse.

Write-in votes were presumably for Hayse, Julian but all votes cannot be Houston validated until a later time.

Hayse, 57, ran as a write-in candidate against Houston after the Morris Municipal Officers Electoral Board ruled in favor of an objector to his petition for the election.

Hayse is a familiar face to the city of Morris having served as its police chief for almost 16 years. He retired from Morris, in 2007 to become Minooka’s police chief, a job he resigned from in 2010.

In 2004 Hayse ran for state representative in the 75th District and lost to then-Democrat incumbent Careen Gordon. Hayse’s other experience includes president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, president of the Grundy County Rod & Gun Club, chairman of board for the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad, Joliet Junior College Advisory Board member, Grundy County Chamber of Commerce member and Grundy County No Tolerance Gang Task Force executive board chairman.

Houston, 70, was first elected to the Morris City Council in 2011. He beat out then-incumbent Don Barkley.

Houston has previously credited his interest in local government to the late John Swezy, who served as an alderman in the 2nd Ward for many years.

Houston is currently chairman of the Airport Committee and a member of the Water and Sewer Committee.

He has previously served on the Parks and Annexation Committee as well.

He has worked in the hospital field, was a chemical analyst at Allied Chemical, and heavy equipment operator out of Local 318, and is retired as an electrician from ComEd Dresden Generating Station.

Republican Adair won the primary election against write-in candidate Mary Callahan, with 12 of 12 precincts reporting, according to the Grundy County Clerk’s unofficial results.

Final unofficial votes posted online showed Adair had 604 votes and writein votes totaled 222. Callahan was the only official write-in candidate for the office. Write-in votes will be validated at a later time, according to the clerk’s office. Adair was appointed as Morris City Clerk about a year ago after former clerk John Enger retired. Tuesday was her first election for the position. The winner of Tuesday’s election will be the only candidate on the April ballot for the position, as no one from any other political parties filed for the clerk position.

“I’m feeling optimistic, hopeful and encouraged,” she said after 4 of the 12 precincts. “I’ll have to wait and see but I’m excited. I feel very honored at this early Mary Callahan point that it is going this way. I’m ready for it to be over.

I’ve always felt support.”

Callahan could not be reached by press time.

Adair is no stranger to city business. She has worked in the clerk’s office and for the water department for eight years.

Newcomer Callahan ran against Adair as a write-in candidate after losing an objection case against her election petitions. The Morris Municipal Officers Electoral Board ruled in favor of the objector.

Callahan has a sales background, she said previously, having worked in sales for the last 19 years selling office equipment and pharmaceuticals. She also has served as a Grundy County Chamber Ambassador and was the on the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce Board.

LOCAL NEWS Channahon schools to receive technology upgrade

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon School District 17’s four grade schools will receive extensive technology upgrades this summer, making it easier for students and teachers to access the Internet in the classroom.

For an amount not to exceed $875,265, Sentinel Technologies will perform a “network refresh” project and install low-voltage wiring throughout the district’s buildings during summer break. The two-month project will involve extensive wiring of every classroom, according to technology director

David Bergstrom, which will increase network speed from 100 megabytes per second to 1,000, and to 10,000 from one network closet to another. Before the board approved the project, teachers testified in person or by written comment on how the upgrades would improve their classrooms.

“I feel like I can take my lessons to new places,” wrote sixth-grade teacher Katie Kern.

The most immediate need to be met by the upgrades is online standardized testing students take, such as MAP and the new PARCC. Schools can handle giving students the exams now, but just barely, and students and

teachers in classes not taking the exams must refrain from using the Internet while testing is conducted in other classrooms.

While all board members favored the better technology, some did not want to include Pioneer Path School in the work.

The district is considering closing the school and merging its students with its other schools.

Enrollment has declined and is projected to continue falling.

The board plans to discuss the school consolidation in May, once a new board is seated following local elections in April, and at least three board members said they were unsure about proceeding with updating

Pioneer Path School until the consolidation issue was settled.

Board members Derek Breen and Pat Clower voted against the plans for that reason.

Enrollment prompts employment changes

The school board Monday also approved two personnel changes based on declining enrollment.

Projections show only three students will be enrolled in the district’s early childhood special education program next year, so the district is discontinuing the program and the employment of the program’s teacher, Kimberly Wandless, as

well as paraprofessional Theresa Hand, beginning at the end of this school year.

The program will be added to the Southern Will County Cooperative for Special Education (SOWIC) next year and will be held in the same District 17 location, with Wandless and Hand teaching the class if their employment is approved at the March 10 SOWIC board meeting.

Superintendent Karin Evans said the addition of early childhood special education students from Laraway, Elwood and Union schools will bring the number of students in the class to 20.

Dresden helps prevent ice damage to homes on Kankakee River MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – As cold temperatures grip the area, warm water from Dresden Generating Station’s cooling pond is helping to prevent ice-related damage to homes along the Kankakee River.

On Feb. 16, the Will County Emergency Management Agency began pumping water from the pond into the river and is expected to continue to through

March 2, according to a news release from Dresden.

“During the current subzero weather, quite a bit of ice formed in several areas of the river,” Harold Damron, the agency’s director said in the release.

“This sometimes results in ice jams, which can cause serious flooding and can damage homes, boat docks and other structures along the riverbank.

The warm water from Dresden’s pond helps break up the ice so it

can flow freely downstream.”

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency allows the siphon lines to be operated twice a season for 14-day intervals each.

This is the first time this winter the siphon lines have been used.

The 70-degree water is siphoned from the cooling pond through pipes on the northeastern corner of the pond. The pipes run from the bottom of the pond, over the dike, under Cottage Road and into the Kankakee River. The

Possible wolf found in Grundy County

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris veterinarian David Bainbridge examined this past weekend what appears to be a dead female gray timber wolf.

The animal was brought to the local vet by Illinois Department of Natural Resources officers to be examined and X-rayed.

“It looked like it was a gray timber wolf, at least by visual appearance,” Bainbridge said Tuesday.

He said the injuries were consistent with being hit by a car, and were bad enough to be fatal for the animal.

According to a published report, the wolf was discovered dead alongside a road north of Interstate 80 by a father and son who stopped after seeing the animal they thought was a coyote.

Bainbridge said the conservation officers had contacted Wisconsin officials to check with weight and muzzle dimensions to better determine if it was indeed a timber wolf

and believed it was.

He said IDNR would run a DNA test on the animal to see if it was from the Western Great Lakes District wolf population in Wisconsin.

IDNR did not immediately return messages left Tuesday seeking comment.

Wolves rare in Illinois

The wolf is a pack animal that can become isolated once a youngster leaves the pack to form a new pack, Bainbridge said, and he hasn’t heard of any packs in the Morris area.

John Basile of Big Run Wolf Ranch in Lockport said he had seen images of the original sent to him via text message by another media outlet.

While he cannot give a definitive answer, the photographs appeared to show a gray timber wolf.

“It looks like the real thing,” he said. “I have three grays here, and it looks identical to them.”

Basile said there are 23 subspecies of wolf, seven or eight of which have become extinct at the hands of man.

He said wolves were reintroduced to the wild in Wisconsin to aid with overpopulation of deer, and they have made a tremendous comeback.

He is not aware of them being reintroduced in Illinois, where they are on the endangered species list.

“The animals use railroad tracks, rivers and streams to go anywhere undercover,” Basile said. “They just follow the rails.”

He said the wolves are not a danger to people, as they are extremely afraid of humans.

“They are absolutely no threat to children,” Basile said.

“They have incredible senses and know when humans are around and run away. That’s why there isn’t more sightings of them.”

He said in the last 100 years there has only been two or three documented cases of wolves harming a human, and Basile’s opinion is that they were probably provoked or felt cornered. Unfortunately, Hollywood has portrayed them as more vicious than they are, Basile said. In reality, once

One of the legion of visceral TNC haters, my younger brother, Chris, recently told me, “I figure it was one of those meals that [Mom] forced us to eat, like liver-and-onions.

I don’t remember that she made it or not.”

Quite possibly, Chris has issues. My two sisters and I are pretty sure Mom did not make TNC – at least not often.

I have no idea where I first tasted TNC, and it’s not something I make or eat often, but what’s not to like about the rich combination of noodles and cheesy sauce, with a crunchy topping and tuna fish.

It’s a simple recipe, evoking perhaps simpler times. Especially today when many of us can eat just about anything we can imagine whenever we

ANOTHER VIEW

Would-be Mars explorers need courage It’s good, in times like these, to be reminded of the human spirit – of its capacity for wonder and courage.

What seems impossible, what seems ever out of reach, is exactly what we seem most driven to get, to explore, to know.

Mars, on average, is 140 million miles from Earth. A trip there would take a good part of a year, assuming speeds in the range of 35,000 mph.

Once there, a person is faced with a “hostile” environment, to borrow the word of the nonprofit organization Mars One. Deadly is more accurate. The atmosphere is some 95 percent carbon dioxide. The average temperature is 80 degrees below zero.

When Mars One announced it wanted to establish a colony on the Red Planet, it minced no words about the challenges of the journey.

“Mars is an unforgiving environment where a small mistake or accident can result in large failure, injury and death,” the group’s website tells us. “Every component must work perfectly. Every system (and its backup) must function without fail or human life is at risk.”

More than 200,000 people immediately applied to go. That number has been whittled

to 100 candidates. Those in the final selection of a handful of colonists will undergo years of training before a planned launch in 2024.

There is an important catch. If they go, they cannot return.

According to Mars One’s website, the technology isn’t yet available to get colonists back from Mars. That people would readily, even eagerly, seek life and, yes, death, on Mars is what fascinates us about this possibility.

One of the 100 finalists cleverly dismissed the concern about never coming home.

“I would probably die on Earth if I stayed here, too,” he said.

That’s true. But life here is a far different thing from life all but alone so very far away in such a cold and desolate place.

It’s been centuries since explorers set out on wooden sailing ships over uncharted water to lands that they didn’t know. What drove them we cannot always say, whether search for fortune or something else.

Whatever the impulse, the act itself is extraordinary. To cast oneself into the unknown, out into the abyss of a place as cruel as Mars, is a monumental testament to our will. To do so with knowledge you could never return is ineffable.

SPRINGFIELD – Last week, Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed a budget that trimmed funding for state universities.

The reaction of university bigwigs? Jack up tuition and protect the bureaucracy at all costs. And I mean at all costs.

Look no further than the comments Illinois State University President Larry Dietz made to WEEK TV news: “Budget cuts at that level would have an impact on many areas of university operations, and there are many issues on the table for discussion. Some areas that could be affected include tuition – as set by our Board of Trustees – scholarships, faculty and staff compensation, hiring decisions and maintenance projects. Throughout the process, I want to assure you that protecting the jobs of our outstanding faculty and staff is our highest priority.

We will do everything we can to prevent measures such as layoffs and forced furlough days.”

So he’s already thinking about jacking up tuition and cutting scholarships?

He’d much rather see teenagers pay more to go to college than tell professors – many of them turning six-digit salaries – to take a furlough day?

We have more university administrators than you can shake a slide rule at. Last year, former state senator Steve Rauschenberger shared this with me: “By the time I was Senate Appropriations chairman, the [University of Illinois] administration was admitting that full professors were carrying a class schedule of under 12 hours. And that 12 includes things that are officially counted as classroom time but aren’t – like committee work. ... So that increases the cost to the university when you reduce the amount

Of course, professors have other duties, including research and office hours. But, still, young people are graduating with decades’ worth of student loan debt to pay the university’s ever-escalating tuition. There are ways to contain costs without burdening our children with more debt or taxpayers with higher bills. One of the biggest costs to universities is pensions.

In fact, nine of the 10 highest pensions paid within Illinois state government go to retired University of Illinois professors. Topping the list is a professor who worked at the university’s Chicago campus.

He collects an annual pension of $452,843. That pension alone would cover the tuition of 37 students for one year. Greater student affordability can be achieved through university fiscal responsibility.

Already, 13 percent of Illinois university employees are opting for 401(k)-type retirement plans rather than traditional pensions. This option affords employees greater economic freedom to move from job to job without losing benefits.

The first reaction of university administrators when facing reduced state funding must be to provide the best value to students and taxpayers.

Coal City moves on to state dual wrestling meet

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com PLANO – Sometimes, the points you don’t allow the opposing team to score are as important as the points your own team scores.

Coal City’s wrestling team was proof of that Tuesday night in a 40-23 win over Peotone in the Class 1A Plano Sectional.

Coal City, which improved to 27-3 in dual meets this season, got its standard six-point wins from the likes of state champions Joey Rivera, Cody Minnick and Corey Jurzak. It was the wrestlers without the individual pedigrees who made this a team victory for the Coalers.

“This was a great team win,” Coal City coach Mark Masters said. “Guys like Parker Czaja, Zach Montgomery, T.J. Jezik, Brandon Nevin. They didn’t get pinned and saved us those bonus points. That adds up. Last time we wrestled Peotone, Zach Montgomery, our heavyweight, got pinned. Tonight, he won 2-0.

That’s a nine-point difference.

“Matches like that were huge because we had some wrestlers injured tonight.

Jake Hiles is 30-1 this year at 106 [pounds], but he couldn’t wrestle tonight. Lucky for us, we have Joey Rivera that can go at 106.”

The match started at 170, and Peotone sent out Nick Goberville, a state qualifier at 152. Coal City’s Jack Crawford jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second period, but Goberville tied it with an escape, then got a takedown at the buzzer. Goberville went on to score three points in the third period for a 6-3 lead, but it was a victory in Masters’ book.

“They brought their real good 152-pounder up to 170 for the start and we didn’t get pinned,” Masters said. “That set things off pretty well for us.”

“This was a good dual,” Frost said. “We had a couple of guys out tonight that we wish could have wrestled, but we came together as a team. To me, it’s more than a team. These guys are like my family. I have been wrestling with them since I was little, and I don’t want to stop. This is my senior year and I’m not going to wrestle in college. This is it for me. I want it to last as long as it can.

“We really have a connection as a team. We all want to win and we all want each other to win. We are always encouraging each other.”

After Frost’s win at 220, Montgomery got a 2-0 victory at 285. Rivera then won by fall at

106 to put the Coalers ahead 216. The two teams traded forfeits at 113 and 120, and Jezik won a 2-0 decision at 126.

Peotone got a major decision at 132 before Jurzak won by fall at 138 to give Coal City an insurmountable 36-16 lead. Brandon Nevin lost 12-0 at 145 before Jonah Englert won 10-0 at 152 and Brian Stopka dropped a 7-1 decision at 160.

“We’ve had quite an obstacle in Wilmington the last few years,” Masters said. “We were able to get past them in the regional, and now we’ll see how we do at state.”

The Coalers will take on Vandalia at 11 a.m. in Friday’s state quarterfinals at U.S. Cellular Colisseum in Bloomington. Vandalia defeated Belleville Althoff, 36-29, Tuesday night. Earlier in the season, Coal City beat Vandalia, 47-27, in a dual meet.

Powerhitting Pihl wins weekend for DePaul Area prep sports schedule

STAFF REPORTS NEW YORK – Coming off the best weekend of her career, DePaul softball player and Seneca High School graduate Nicole Pihl was tabbed as the Big East Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. In four games at the Arlington Invitational in Texas, Pihl hit .583 with seven hits and 10 RBIs. The sophomore also recorded 21 putouts in the two-day tournament.

Pihl found a power surge in Texas as the Marseilles native hit a team-best three home runs. No hit was bigger than the grand slam Pihl smacked to power DePaul to a 7-4 comefrom-behind victory over host UT Arlington on Saturday.

The sophomore slugger had a career-high five RBIs in that game.

Pihl’s other two long balls came in wins against Missouri-Kansas City and Prairie View A&M. The second-year standout laced a two-run shot against the Kangaroos and a three-run blast versus the Panthers. The Blue Demons get back on the diamond this weekend, when they travel to Las Vegas for the Alexis Park Resort Classic. The event, hosted by UNLV, features a four-game slate over three days.

A bridge player should not be taking daring finesses. However, to watch an expert’s ingenious stratagem is a rare joy.

Before we get to the play of today’s deal, though, what should South bid after West opens one diamond, North makes a takeout double, and East passes?

Next, plan South’s stratagem in four spades after West cashes his two top diamonds and shifts to a heart.

In the auction, if South bids one spade, it shows 0-8 points; if he jumps to two spades, it indicates 9-11 points.

With more than that, he starts with a two-diamond cue-bid. The auction continues two hearts – two spades – four spades – pass.

South can afford one trump loser, but not two. Strangely, the best play is the same even if East and West have passed throughout. Here, West is marked with the spade king from his opening bid. So first playing low to the queen cannot be right. The second-best play is low to the 10, planning, if it loses to the jack, to cash the ace next. But even better is immediately to cash the ace. When the king comes down, South can gain an overtrick by finessing East out of his spade jack.

In isolation against passing opponents, if the ace dropped the jack, South would continue with the queen to drive out the king. Or, if the ace collected only the four and nine, declarer would cross to the dummy with a club and lead a spade toward his queen-10.

He would have no guesswork. **

Help knees by strengthening muscles and losing weight Dear Doctor K: I’m in my 60s.

My knees have started to hurt, especially when I’m climbing stairs. Can you recommend any nonsurgical ways to relieve this pain?

Dear Reader: Knee pain is one of the most common reasons for doctor visits. As you get older, knee pain can limit your mobility and take away your independence. The keys to keeping your knees healthy?

Strengthening muscles around the knees, improving balance and losing weight.

Let’s start with muscle strengthening. Your knee joints bear your weight when you are standing, and that creates a lot of stress on them. That stress is reduced by different muscle groups above the knee that help

They also help hold your body weight on a bent knee. Therefore, weakness of these muscles can cause higher levels of stress in the knee joint.

I spoke to my colleague, Michael Orpin, a doctor of physical therapy at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He recommends exercises that work many muscle groups at once. One such exercise is the sit-to-stand, in which you move from a sitting to a standing position repeatedly. (I’ve put an illustration

showing how to do a sit-to-stand on my website, AskDoctorK. com.) Below the knee, the muscles in your calf are important for knee control. They also help propel the body during walking, stair climbing and running. Weakness in these muscles also adds stress to the knee joint. Heel raises can help to strengthen the calf muscles.

To do a heel raise, hold on to a counter for balance. Slowly rise up on tiptoes, then lower heels to the floor. Try three sets of 15 repetitions.

You’ll also want to focus on balance to keep your knees healthy. Maintaining balance requires your knees to work with your hips and ankles. This coordination takes practice.

Simple exercises, such as

standing with one foot right in front of the other, as if you were standing on a tightrope, can help.

Weight loss is the important final piece. The force of each pound you carry is magnified by the time it reaches your knees. If you’re walking across a flat surface, for example, the force on your knees is equal to 1 1/2 times your body weight.

Going uphill, it is two to three times your body weight.

Shedding extra weight reduces this force and can help prevent arthritis and injury.

It can also reduce existing knee pain. To lose weight, try aerobic activity that doesn’t overload the knee. Swimming or walking in a pool, or riding a stationary bike are good

options.

You’re right to ask about nonsurgical options for knee pain – and you’re asking at the right time: as your knees are starting to hurt, but probably before they have been badly damaged.

By taking action now to protect your knees, you can postpone, or even avoid altogether, the need for knee replacement surgery someday. Surgery can be a godsend, but if you can protect your knees before they reach this stage – and you can – that’s even better.
