Leo was educated in schools in New Boston and Portsmouth, Ohio.

Leo served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific Theater of Operations.

He married Barbara J. Cameron in Ottawa. Leo was employed by the Morris Paper Mill for over 40 years and then worked at the Morris Hospital in the maintenance department for 10 years until his retirement in 1992.

Surviving is one daughter, Rhonda J. (Robert) Fosen of Oswego, IL; and one son, Leo E. (JoEllen) New-

man of Morris; three grandchildren, Brian Foson, Lee Ann (Peter) Fichtel and Tamara (Greg) Kjellesvik of Morris; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joy Mae Roman of Joliet and Fern Wheatley; and one brother, Carl H. Newman of Joliet, IL. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceding Leo in death were his parents; his wife, on August 23, 1998; and two brothers, John B. and Earl F. Newman.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Leo’s Life will be held immediately following with the Rev. Dr. Roy C. Backus of First Presbyterian Church of Morris officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Morris Color Guard.

Memorials may be made in Leo’s name to the Activities Department of Rivershores Nursing Home in Marseilles. Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by the Morris Color Guard.

Born October 1, 1922, in Morris, he was the son of Otto and Alma(Lund)Thorson.

He received his education in the schools of Morris. He was a veteran of W.W. II and served in the U.S. Army.

He married Sophie Such on February 16, 1958. She preceded him in death in 1994.

Glenn married Rose Mickelson on February 7, 1998 and they lived all of their married life in Morris.

He started in the carpentry trade by working for Art Thompson.

Later he became a self em-

ployed carpenter.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rose; one daughter, Linda (Don)Hansen of Morris; one step daughter, Barb Harseim of Morris; four grandchildren, Kady (James)Patterson, Aren (Jessica) Hansen, Tara Hansen and Jacob Hansen; two step grandchildren, Jen (Frank)Varner and Michelle Harseim; two great grandchildren, Kyle and James Patterson; two step great grandchildren, Bryce and Brady Varner; two sisters, Lois Steffes of Morris and Norma (John)Bremencamp of Washington; several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale Thorson; one sister, Evelyn Baker; one step son-in-law, Doug Harseim.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1024 and American Legion Post 294.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed watching western movies and spending time with his family and friends.

Memorials may be given to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church or American Heart Association.

Medicare fraud, email scams among many topics addressed

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Even though University of Illinois Extension educator Sasha Grabenstetter has both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in personal financial planning, she’s not immune to having her identity stolen.

At a workshop Friday on identity theft and fraud, Grabenstetter told a group at the U of I Extension office in Morris how someone got hold of her debit card number when she used it at a grocery store.

Living in Texas at the time, Grabenstetter discovered her card was used to purchase something in Georgia within minutes of leaving the store.

Luckily, her bank caught the problem quickly.

Anybody can be a victim, Grabenstetter said.

In fact, an estimated 14 percent of the population will be a victim of fraud sometime in their lives. The workshop focused on being aware of the financial facts about fraud, how to protect against being a fraud victim and knowing ways to protect your money when using electronic devices for shopping, banking and other financial tasks.

How to protect yourself

It’s safer to use a credit card than a debit card, because the Fair Credit Billing Act limits liability to $50 on a credit card.

The Electronic Fund Transfer Act limits loss to $50 on a debit card if the bank is notified within two days of the fraud. If the fraud is not reported within 60 days, there is a risk of unlimited loss.

That’s why it’s important to check bank statements at least once per month, more if you do online banking. Keeping tabs on the information in your credit report also is important, Grabenstetter said.

It’s not always strangers who want to take your identity, she said. Family members and even caregivers have been known to open accounts in other people’s names.

There is more than a financial loss associated with identity theft. Twenty-nine percent of fraud victims will experience major depression.

The loss of time dealing with cleaning up the matter can feel insurmountable. “Fraud can dramatically change your life,” Grabenstetter said.

What to watch for

One of the biggest red flags is if someone calls or emails asking for information.

Never give out personal information over the phone or in an email. You can ask to return a call, check out the proper phone number for the bank and contact the bank on your own. Unscrupulous people will try many ways to scam you.

Workshop participant Fran DeFrees averted what was likely a scam when she received an early morning call from someone claiming to be her grandson – he didn’t use a name, DeFrees said.

The caller’s voice was muf-

fled, which was likely intentional. When she pressed him for his name and he was incorrect, the caller hung up.

“If I had [asked] if it was Jonathan, they would have known his name,” DeFrees said. These types of calls can result in unknowingly sending money to someone who claims to be a relative in trouble.

Medicare fraud

Cheryl Lockwood, of the Northeastern Area on Aging, also made a presentation to the group on Medicare fraud and the toll it takes on the economy as well as personal lives.

People should be on the lookout for Medicare fraud by asking for and reviewing item-

ized bills from hospitals, being wary of supply companies that want to automatically send medical supplies or accepting services that claim to be free of charge from someone other than your doctor or a recognized organization.

Between $75 million and $1 billion is lost each year to fraud.

“People don’t realize how extensive Medicare and insurance fraud is,” Lockwood said.

Lockwood had the same advice regarding medical fraud over the phone or online: If someone asks for personal information, such as a Social Security or Medicare number, do not give it out.

A popular scam these days is someone claiming to be a home health care worker going to senior citizens’ homes and saying their doctor ordered regular blood pressure tests or other simple services.

The scammer then gets the victim’s private information and bills for skilled nursing services; things that may not be needed or not even ordered by the person’s physician.

The bottom line is, check with your physician before agreeing to any services.

If you suspect Medicare fraud, it’s important to report it, Lockwood said.

“It’s taxpayer money we pay into [Medicare] and it’s important to have it here for years to come,” she said.

LOCAL NEWS Four running in Morris primary election

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In Tuesday’s primary election for the city of Morris, four Republican candidates will face off for two offices. The 2nd Ward has two familiar people vying for the aldermanic seat – incumbent Julian Houston and former Morris Police Chief Doug Hayse.

The Morris city clerk race has incumbent Carol Adair and newcomer Mary Callahan facing off.

Hayse and Callahan are running as write-in candidates, removed from the ballot following Electoral Board hearings over their election petitions.

To vote for Hayse or Callahan, voters must write their names on the ballot. Morris is the only municipality in Grundy County with a primary election, Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson said. The open city clerk office makes this primary election a citywide one.

The last citywide primary in Morris was in 2009, when there was a city treasurer race.

As of Friday afternoon, the county clerk’s office received 68 early votes for the election and will take early votes until noon Saturday, Olson said.

In-person absentee voting will continue through Monday.

Those voting Tuesday should remember to check their polling place location, because it may differ from previous elections.

The county clerk’s office clustered polling places for this primary election to save the county money, Olson said. The normal 12 locations was narrowed down to five.

Clustering locations is saving the county about $8,000, she said. For the general election, April 7 polling places will return to their normal locations.

LYVONNE A. VILAND

Born: Aug. 7, 1946; in Morris, IL Died: Feb. 18, 2015; in Hammond, Ind.

Lyvonne A. Viland, 96, of Morris, passed away early Thursday morning, February 19, 2015, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Pastor Patrick Lohse officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Born on February 11, 1919 in Buckingham, she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Hill) Heinis. She graduated from Bradley Grade School.

She was married to John Connor and later to Sigurd “Skip” Viland. She went to beauty school in Chicago, and started working at the age of 16, at a salon in Dwight.

In 1943, she moved to Morris and was employed at the Beauty Mart for several years. Later she owned and operated Lyvonne’s Beauty Shop.

She is survived by one daughter, Shari (Bob) Steele of Morris; two sons, Jack (Martha) Connor of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Tom Viland of Chicago; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Connor of Kalamazoo, Michigan; five grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two grandsons, Brett and Brandon Steele; and one brother, Vearl Heinis.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Lyvonne enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Patsy passed away peacefully at 6:10 p.m. on February 18, 2015 at Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, Indiana. Patsy was born on August 7, 1946 at Morris Hospital. She was the daughter of William Harold and Beata (Benson) Wilkey. Patsy grew up in Reddick and the surrounding areas. She married James B. Perry Jr. on November 10, 1988 in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He passed away on June 6, 2005.

Survivors include 2 step sons, James R. (Michele) Perry of Reddick, and Michael A. United Methodist Church. She served on the Reddick Fire Department from 1982 to present, and she operated the first aide station at the Reddick Lions Hall for many years. Patsy was also a Reddick Village board member, Lioness. Patsy helped organize, prepare and serve the weekly senior meals. She volunteered her services to numerous children’s activities and programs. Patsy worked as a respiratory tech at St. Mary’s Hospital for many years. After retiring, she provided home health care to many of her senior friends. Patsy was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her giving nature made her loved by those who were lucky enough to come in contact with her.

LEONARD M. WILLS Born: Aug. 6, 1923 Died: Feb. 20, 2015

Leonard M. Wills, age 91, of Coal City, passed away Friday morning, February 20, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Born August 6, 1923, on the family farm in Mazon Township, Leonard was a son of the late John O. and Ethel (Jackson) Wills. He was raised and educated in Coal City, and

graduated from Coal City High School.

Leonard honorably served in the United States Air Force, and on October 10, 1948, he married Dorothy Alice Planeta in Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City.

Leonard worked as a mechanic for Varland International Harvester in Morris, and later retired from Dart Chemical Company after more than 20 years of service. Leonard was a charter member of the Coal City Area Club. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, watching the water skiers at the Area Club, and fixing anything that needed repair. Leonard will be remembered for cherishing the time he spent with his family.

Survivors include two sons, Gary (Mary Lou) Wills of Barnwell, South Carolina and Roger (Linda) Wills of Coal City; six grandchildren, Andrew (Sally) Wills of Simpsonville, SC, Matthew Wills of Barnwell, SC, Jason Wills of Jacksonville, FL, Roger (Kelly) Wills of Huntsville, AL, Tina Harris of Scottsboro, Alabama and Russell (Candace) Wills of Newton, Illinois; great grandchildren, Katherine “Reyn”, Mia Elizabeth, Joey, Josh, Mason, Michael, Austin, Seth, Payton, Sidney, Austin and John Mikal; three

Emergency planning committee gets grant IEMA gives Grundy more than $8,000

By JESSICA BOURQUE Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – An annual grant issued by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency ensures Grundy County can continue expanding its hazmat safety programs.

Last week, Grundy County received a $8,447 Hazardous Materials Preparedness Planning Grant from IEMA. Grundy’s Local Emergency Planning Committee was one of 33 agencies statewide to receive funding.

In total, the state issued $435,378.

The money is awarded to agencies based on several factors, including how well the funds have been used in pre-

vious years, according to Patti Thompson, communications manager for IEMA. “We look at how much money they have spent in the past and how they’ve spent it because this is an annual allocation. We check that they have been using the money for appropriate planning,” Thompson said.

IEMA stipulates the money be used on precautionary measures such as hazmat training events, emergency response teams or hazardous waste assessment studies, Thompson said.

MORRIS - The Morris police union has announced it’s endorsement of Alderman Julian Houston for re-election.

The Metropolitan Alliance of Police Morris Police Chapter 63 stated in a news release it supports and endorses incumbent Houston for the position of 2nd Ward alderman in the Feb. 24 Republican primary election.

Union President Doris Noll confirmed the endorsement Wednesday.

“I thank them for supporting and backing me in this election,” Houston said in the news release.

Houston is running to retain his seat against former Morris and Minooka Police Chief Doug Hayse, who is running as a Republican writein candidate in the primary election next week.

Having the right emergency equipment and proper planning is key to waste mitigation and public safety, Schroeder said. The agency regularly re-evaluates its plans to make sure emergency managers are prepared for all possible problems.

“The incident can be anything. It depends on what it is, where it is, the time of day and the weather – all of those

things come into play,” he said.

In recent years, LEPC has used the money to organize yearly training for fire and rescue crews at local nuclear and chemical plants.

Schroeder said the LEPC will evaluate what training, planning, education and public outreach is needed before deciding how this year’s grant money will be used.

Schroeder said Grundy County has seen a number of small, manageable incidents, but is rarely subjected to major hazmat emergencies.

“You hope you never have to use these plans, but it’s always important to have them in place,” he said.

Hospital foundation offering health care scholarships Deadline to apply for them is April 13 MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Morris Hospital Foundation is once again offering scholarships to those pursuing an education in a health care field.

The 2015 scholarships include: the $1,000 Carol Harrington Endowed Morris Hos-

pital Foundation Scholarship, the $1,000 Relucio Family Healthcare Endowed Scholarship, the $1,000 Daniel Aaron Wolfer Healthcare Scholarship and the Hugo Avalos Scholarship, up to $5,000, for Illinois residents who have been accepted into, or are currently enrolled in, an accredited medical school, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant program, according to a news release from the hospital.

To be considered for the

scholarships, applicants must reside in one of the 19 communities served by Morris Hospital and be accepted into, or currently enrolled in, a hospital-related health care curriculum at an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school. The 19 communities include: Braceville, Braidwood, Channahon, Coal City, Dwight, Gardner, Kinsman, Marseilles, Mazon, Minooka, Morris, Newark, Ottawa, Ransom, Seneca, South

Wilmington, Verona, Wilmington and Yorkville.

There is no limit to the number of scholarships an applicant can apply for. All applications include essay

questions and require at least two letters of reference. Applications will be reviewed by the Morris Hospital Foundation’s scholarship committee.

Organized annually by Heritage Harbor Ottawa, the “Penguin Plunge” invites residents of Heritage Harbor as well as neighbors and friends to collect pledges for participating in a wintertime “plunge” off a dock and into the chilly water at the marina.

In its fourth year, the event drew 280 participants and more than 2,500 spectators.

“Our homeowners at Heritage Harbor and the Ottawa community as a whole are incredibly generous, and it has been extremely rewarding to see this event grow each year in both the number of ‘plungers’ who participate, as well as the total funds we raise,” said Tammy Barry, director of sales and marketing for Heritage Harbor Ottawa, in the release.

“We so appreciate the community support for our mission to grant the wishes of Illinois children with life-threatening medical conditions,” said Ashley Nichele, gift officer of community programs for Make-A-Wish Illinois, in the release. “The spirit and generosity of this event moves us ever closer to

our goal of granting 700 wishes this year throughout the state.”

Barry noted that since all costs for the events are covered by donors and sponsors, 100 percent of proceeds raised go directly to Make-A-Wish.

OPINION Scott Walker’s bumpy evolution education It’s almost as if Scott Walker knew he could get in trouble just by traveling to London.

In the U.K. recently for a trade mission, the governor of Wisconsin and likely presidential candidate went to the Chatham House think tank to talk Wisconsin business – and ended up the headline of stories about, of all things, evolution.

Walker was in the U.K. in his capacity as governor, to promote the sales of Wisconsin products. Yes, it’s hard to view an overseas trip, especially by an American governor with presidential ambitions, as anything but a campaign event.

But Walker steered clear of politics and didn’t take any members of his presidential political team along with him. Walker took particular care to avoid criticizing President Obama, adhering to idea that an American politician should not criticize his country’s leaders while abroad.

And then, 44 minutes into a 45-minute question-and-answer session, Justin Webb, the BBC presenter moderating the session, turned to Walker and said: “We’re out of time, governor. I know you have to be somewhere else. Can I finish with

Walker learned a few lessons.

First, there’s no protection from out-of-the-blue questions. Second, Republicans, as Webb suggested, get special treatment when traveling abroad. And third, it doesn’t matter if a candidate wants to talk about cheese and industrial sand, he’s never the one setting the agenda.

Don’t leave map drawing to those who will benefit The turmoil has partially subsided over a Chicago Little League team whose national title was taken away by Little League International.

One aspect of the story still resonates with reform-minded Illinoisans.

The adults who operated the Jackie Robinson West team apparently wanted to give the boys, ages 11 to 13, the best opportunity to win. The team operates within established geographic boundaries, but certain talented players lived outside those boundaries. The solution? Little League International alleges some adult team leaders quietly redrew the boundary map to bring in those top players.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

The result gave the team ineligible players who helped it win a championship. That championship has been taken from the players, who are paying the price for the actions of adults.

Hmm. Redrawing a map to give one side an unfair advantage. Where have we heard that story before?

Sounds like the Illinois redistricting process to us.

Every 10 years after the census is taken, our state constitution grants politicians, who stand to benefit from the results, the power to draw new maps for state House and Senate and the U.S. House.

And every 10 years, those politicians draw maps

that slice and dice the state into oddly shaped districts designed to give maximum benefit to the party in power.

Both Republicans and Democrats have abused the system – they just can’t help themselves. In 2011, Democrats controlled the process. The maps they produced were shockingly effective. For example, in 2012, Senate Democratic candidates won 52 percent of all votes cast for Senate across the state, but they captured 68 percent of the seats, which all but throws accountability out the window.

Petition campaigns to remove politics from the process failed in 2010 and 2014.

That hasn’t stopped legislative

reformers from trying.

State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, recently introduced the Redistricting Standards Act. The legislation would take map drawing away from politicians and put it in the hands of the State Board of Elections. Bureaucrats would abide by all pertinent redistricting laws in coming up with new maps. New districts would have to have equal populations, be compact, contiguous, and not irregularly shaped, and not favor political parties or incumbents.

The Board of Elections would have two tries to create maps that lawmakers would not be allowed to amend. If those aren’t approved, the

board’s third mapmaking venture would be subject to amendment.

A Temporary Redistricting Advisory Commission would be named to offer advice, should the State Board of Elections need it, and conduct at least four public hearings on the proposed new maps.

The bill ought to lessen political influence on redistricting, but it does not remove it entirely, as citizens redistricting commissions in California and Arizona have done.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

With all of the area girls basketball teams done for the season, the boys begin postseason play Monday, with the Class 1A and 2A teams starting their regionals. Class 3A and 4A teams will begin the next week.

In 1A, much of the excitement and anticipation involves a potential matchup between neighborhood rivals and sometime co-op partners Dwight and Gardner-South Wilmington. Dwight is the second seed in the Dwight Regional and GSW is third.

The two teams met Jan. 30 in Gardner, and the Panthers upset the state-ranked Trojans, 59-49. A repeat matchup would be sure to fill the gym at Dwight. First, however, Gardner-South Wilmington must beat sixth-seed Iroquois West and Dwight must beat No. 7 Donovan.

Both games are Tuesday, with Dwight-Donovan tipping off at 6 p.m. and GSW-Iroquois West at 7:30. If both teams win, they will play each other at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Also in that regional, St. Anne has garnered the top seed and will play Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s Tri-Point-Grant Park matchup. The Wednesday and Thursday winners will play for the regional title Friday at 7 p.m. The area’s other 1A team, Newark, is seeded No. 1 in the Ottawa Marquette Regional, which will see its games played at Marseilles Grade School. The Norsemen have won their past nine games and will not play until 6 p.m. Wednesday. They will take on the winner of Monday’s Illinois Lutheran-LaMoille game. Ottawa Marquette is the regional’s second seed,

Bears need to draft a quarterback, just not right away

INDIANAPOLIS – New Bears general manager Ryan Pace is on the record as saying he believes the way you attack the quarterback position is in waves, drafting them and signing as many free agents as you have to until you strike gold.

He also made reference Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine to the old Ron Wolfe school of thought about drafting one every year.

Of course, regardless of whether the quarterback you win with is Jay Cutler or other contestants soon to be identified, the first question is whether or not you finally have found the coach or coaches who can develop one.

We’ve heard a ton about Vic Fangio and the Bears’ new 3-4 defense, but what should we expect of new offensive coordinator Adam Gase, whose No. 1 priority has to be to finally fix the Bears at the game’s most important position?

His last boss, John Elway, spoke about Gase on Thursday.

“He’s a young guy that really works hard and did a lot of things blending what we did as well as what Peyton (Manning) was used to doing and working with Peyton. They had a great relationship, and so Adam really did a great, great job with us.”

Now that Manning’s worked for him, who will be Gase’s next pupils?

What if Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota fell to them at No. 7 in the NFL draft?

Winston won’t, but Mariota could.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush If the Heisman Trophy winner Mariota falls in the draft, it will be because of questions about how his game will transfer from the Oregon offense to a pro style scheme.

“I guess you could say it’s a little bit of motivation,” Mariota said about those who doubt him.

“There’s a purpose of why I’m here and why I’m standing in front of you and that’s because I love the game, I want to be part of this game, I want to be part of this game for a long time. My motivation isn’t to prove anybody wrong. My motivation is to make a dream come true for me.”

Mariota seems like a fine young man, but the majority of my sources are telling me he isn’t worth the risk in the top 10 or 15 picks of this draft, and the Bears cannot afford to blow the No. 7 pick.

Brett Hundley of UCLA probably will be the third quarterback off the board and should be there when the Bears pick in the second round. Interestingly, it seems like he might have a Chicago connection of sorts too.

“I love Donovan (McNabb) to death. I talk to him, even to this day. He has helped me out through this journey and this process. He’s a smooth quarterback and he’s unique at what he does, and I think that’s the

same thing that I bring while playing football.”

Unfortunately, there are enough questions about Hundley’s game that he isn’t worth the risk in the second round, either.

It’s possible, if Baylor’s Bryce Petty is your cup of tea, the Bears could grab him in the third round. But with him trying to transition from the most gimmicky offense of all, that’s a pick you’d hate to waste too.

So, before I go, here’s a plan and a name for you that might make the most sense. The Bears have to get pass rushers, safeties and a receiver who can play right now and that would be the best use of their early round picks.

It is possible the Browns would give the Bears the 12th and 19th picks in the first round to come up and get Mariota.

There will be very good pass rushers, wideouts and safeties available in those spots.

The QB who intrigues me the most is Garrett Grayson out of Colorado State. I’d hate to use a high second rounder on him, but I doubt he’ll be there when the Bears come back around in the third.

Predicting these picks, especially when you’re planning trades, is akin to winning the lotto, but I suspect a lot of Bears fans would be happy campers if that plan came through.

“You look at who we’ve got lining up (in the starting rotation),” ace Chris Sale said before taking the field for the club’s first pitchers/catchers workout. “We can run out there with anybody.’’

As Adam Eaton said, “expectations are through the roof as always” on the first day of camp. But these Sox believe they’re good. Like postseason good.

“I expect to make the playoffs,” manager Robin Ventura said. “I expect us to make a good run at it, and make the playoffs.”

The addition of Jeff Samardzija between Sale and Jose Quintana is perhaps the biggest reason the Sox’s collective self-esteem is running high. Samardzija should give them one of the top 1-2-3 rotation combinations in baseball, and closer David Robertson and lefties Zach Duke and Dan Jennings were added to the bullpen.

“We believe it starts and ends with pitching,” said general manager Rick Hahn, knowing every opponent will see at least one of them and sometimes all during a series.

What’s more, Adam La-

Roche and Melky Cabrera are welcome additions to the lineup. And Emilio Bonificio spruces up the bench.

“In the offseason we are working out and you see that while we are working hard, our front office is doing things to put a winning team on the field,” Sale said. “It’s up to us.

The more work that comes in, the more that comes out. Keep working hard and stay on top of it and hopefully we are spraying each other at the end.”

With champagne, that is.

The goal, Sale said, is simple: “Winning a World Series.

That’s what we all show up for.

I don’t think a team comes in and says, ‘Hey, let’s finish in second place this year.’ It’s a lot of hard work that goes into this and it’s a long season so you might as well see if we can go all the way.”

“We have some big impact players here and we’re all getting ready to play,” Sale said.

ter’s box between most pitches.

“Good luck enforcing that,” Cubs veteran pitcher Jason Hammel said.

The list of new rules designed to speed up the pace include time limits on between-innings warmup routines for pitchers, a requirement that a manager remain in

the dugout when formally challenging a call and the use of at least two large timer displays per stadium to help inform and enforce.

“I respect what the commissioner’s attempting to do in major league baseball in general,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon, a skeptic and critic

of speed-up/action rules in the past – and a prime source of the issue given his early embrace of defensive shifts, tolerance for trips to the mound and his Tampa Bay team’s top-ranking in length of games in MLB last year.

“I know you’ve heard different comments from me in the

past. But moving forward, I will just check it out and play good in the sandbox and make it work.”

As recently as this month, Maddon questioned the motives and wisdom behind speed-the-game efforts in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

It seems hard to believe, but this is my 7,500th column. My first appeared on April 1, 1994. So, please excuse my featuring a deal that I declared. It was played during a Friday evening duplicate at the former Beverly Bridge Club in Manhattan.

In the bidding, West used the Unusual No-Trump, in theory showing at least 5-5 in the minors. North’s threespade response was forcing. Then, over East’s jump to five diamonds, I decided that six hearts rated to have play. How did I make the contract?

West led the diamond two (in principle fourth-highest). East won with his ace and shifted to his club.

Since I thought West had five diamonds for his overcall, I assumed he intended his diamond-two lead as a suit-preference signal for clubs. This left me confident that he could not have a spade void; with that, he would have led a high diamond. But perhaps he had a heart void.

I won the second trick with my club ace, led a spade to dummy’s king, and called for the heart nine.

If East had played low in tempo, I would have won with my ace and gone down.

However, East, thinking it could not cost, covered with his 10. I won the trick, noting West’s discard, entered dummy with another spade, played a heart to my seven, drew trumps, ran the spades and claimed.

That was a top because everyone else started trumps by cashing the ace, after which there was no recovery.

If declarer calls for dummy’s top card in a suit and you have it surrounded, almost always it will be right to play low smoothly.

Prepare your preschooler for arrival of new baby Dear Doctor K: I’m expecting my second baby in a few months. Everyone’s excited except my 2-year-old son. What can I do to help my son look forward to the new arrival?

Dear Reader: Your son has always gotten all the attention – and he probably assumed that he always would. I was the oldest child. My parents told me (many years later) that I wasn’t real excited that a new brother or sister was on the way. I find that hard to believe, of course.

It’s no wonder that your son is not enthusiastic about a noisy, demanding baby that may steal the spotlight.

He knows he’ll have competition for your attention and affections. He may even worry

The way you handle the pregnancy and first months of the new baby’s life can do much to reassure your son that he isn’t being replaced.

Begin to prepare him now.

The most important thing you can do is talk about the new baby, early and often. Get him used to babies by visiting a friend who has a baby. Let him know that, at first, the new baby may not recognize him, or want to play with him. But

that when the baby gets a little older, he’ll have a wonderful playmate.

Make any major changes to your son’s life now. For example, if it hasn’t already happened, start potty training well before the baby is due.

Done early, these changes will be your son’s accomplishments. Done too close to the baby’s arrival, and these changes may be interpreted as the baby pushing him out of his normal routine.

Involve your son in preparations. Ask his opinion about the names you’re considering, or have him choose the outfit the baby will wear home from the hospital.

Once the new baby arrives, include your son in the baby’s

homecoming. Encourage him to talk to and touch the newborn.

Ask for your son’s help and involve him in the baby’s care.

Having responsibilities can help your son feel important.

Ask him to get a diaper for you or pick out clothes.

A baby demands a lot of attention, but don’t allow your older child to feel neglected.

Schedule special time with him.

Expect -- and indulge -some babyish behavior. After a newborn arrives, it’s not uncommon for children to return to thumb-sucking, or for a toilet-trained child to have accidents. Don’t scold your son for these regressions. They’re likely to be short-lived.

Allow your son to express negative emotions toward the baby. Explain that it’s OK to feel less than thrilled about the baby all the time.

Finally, don’t ever miss an opportunity to praise your child. Reward efforts to be helpful, and acknowledge any positive things he says about the baby.

Once my baby sister started to crawl, I became her guide and protector. I kept her from climbing the staircase, for example. Boy, were my parents lucky that she had an older brother to keep her safe!

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to support the Engineering Department.

The Automation Technician is responsible for constructing automation type equipment.

Troubleshoot, solve and document problems as they arise during the construction of the machines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Layout, Cut and Machine Aluminum Extrusion in order to install safety guarding for Machines Construct Electrical Panels with the help of Electrical Schematics and Panel Layout Drawings Machine Electrical Enclosures and Panels with the help of power tools and milling machine Perform Electrical and Pneumatic hookups and route necessary wires and hoses Create parts drawings and update electrical drawings as needed Construct small part holding fixtures and machine components as needed QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: High school degree or equivalent Basic oral and written communication skills Minimum 5 years previous relevant work experience required Proficiency in the use of hand and power tools Some AutoCad experience a plus Must have an electrical and pneumatic background Machining experience helpful Experience with automation machinery preferred Must be self-motivated and be able to work in a fast paced environment Ability to work well with others Ability to follow verbal instructions Clover Technologies Group offers an excellent salary and benefits plan.
