LYVONNE A. VILAND

Born: Feb. 11, 1919; in Buckingham, IL Died: Feb. 19, 2015; in Morris, IL Lyvonne A. Viland, 96, of Morris, passed away early Thursday morning, February 19, 1919 at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Pastor Patrick Lohse officiating.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Born on February 11, 1919 in Buckingham, she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Hill) Heinis.

She graduated from Bradley Grade School. She was married to John Connor and later to Sigurd “Skip” Viland.

She went to beauty school in Chicago, and started working at the age of 16, at a salon in Dwight. In 1943, she moved to Morris and was employed at the Beauty Mart for several years. Later she owned and operated Lyvonne’s Beauty Shop.

She is survived by one daughter, Shari (Bob) Steele of Morris; two sons, Jack (Martha) Connor of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Tom Viland of Chicago; one daughter-inlaw, Beverly Connor of Kalamazoo, Michigan; five grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two grandsons, Brett and Brandon Steele; and one brother, Vearl Heinis.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Lyvonne enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

PATSY WILKEY-PERRY Patsy Wilkey-Perry, 68, of Reddick passed away at St. Margaret’s Mercy Hospital in Hammond, Indiana.

ELVERA WINN Elvera (Balas) Winn was born in Mazon, Illinois on September 9, 1923, to Mary and George Balas and died in Lubbock, Texas on February 13, 2015, after traveling from Tucson for her last few days.

Vera was the fifth child after Anna (Onderisin), Mary (Seversen), George Balas and Mable (Erickson).

She was raised by her sister, Mary from the age of twelve after the death of her parents. By fifth or sixth grade, she began telling her parents that, like Mary and Mable, one day she would become a teacher. She received her teaching certificate from Eureka College (IL) (1943).

In 1946, she married Harold Punke who died accidentally that same year. Vera’s sister, Mable, was teaching in Tucson, Arizona, and insisted that a visit to Tucson might be helpful. Vera agreed and stayed longer than expected after attending and graduating from the University of Arizona and meeting a captain in the Air Force named Earl Winn.

Earl, a B-17 pilot in World War II, was stationed at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson at that time. Earl and Vera were married in South Carolina in 1949. Air Force transfers continued every few years and Vera and Earl persevered and built a life together rich in memories.

Vera taught school wherever Earl was stationed. While living in Puerto Rico at Ramey AFB Vera attended the American University at San German and earned her Master’s degree in education. Earl retired from the Air Force after 25 years of service and the family moved to Tucson after Earl’s retirement in 1967. He died in 1978.

Vera’s last years of teaching were served as a sixth grade teacher at Schumaker School on the east side of Tucson, where she was popular among students and faculty. Vera retired from teaching in 1987 but not from contributing.

The Veterans’ Hospital in Tucson needed volunteers, so Vera volunteered. She spent 23 years doing whatever was needed in Reception, in Audiology, and in the Heart Clinic; she was honored with a Volunteer of the Year Award.

She spent many of her last years active with reading, needlepoint, other crafts and with her many friends.

Her intellect and humor remained with her to the end. She was an active member of the Gold Star Wives as well as Delta Kappa Gamma (1973-2015), a worldwide organization of women educators.

She is survived by her daughter, Michele, now of Slaton, Texas; and her son, Richard (Stacy), a teaching physician at the Texas Tech medical school in Lubbock, Texas.

She also leaves two grand-daughters, Sara (Stephen Pettinga) and Alice Winn, both of Austin, Texas; a step grandson, Tyler; and step grand- daughter, Molly, both of Lubbock.

She is the last remaining member of her generation on both sides of the family and leaves many nephews and nieces and cousins.

Special mention should go to Ray Davies, a close friend from childhood in Illinois and most of her adulthood and to Miriam Kraus and her parents in Germany. Ray also taught school for many years in Tucson.

Vera had several health issues in her last few years and many thanks go to Jan Leck for being there as a caretaker and surrogate family member.

Thanks also to Drs. Chapeskie and Whitman of Tucson for their caring medical help through the last several years.

LOCAL BRIEF Crimestoppers seeks information on burglary

GOOSE LAKE – Crimestoppers of Grundy County is seeking information regarding a recent residential burglary in Goose Lake. The incident occurred in the daytime hours of Feb. 10 in the 6000 block of Deerfield Drive. Jewelry and change were stolen, according to a news

release from Crimestoppers.

Callers providing information to the Crimestoppers line at 815-942-9667 will remain anonymous and rewards of up to $5,000 are eligible for information that leads to an arrest and filing of criminal charges on crime occurring in Grundy County.

‘Spay-ghetti’ dinners, donations help pay for program services

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Spay It Forward, the nonprofit organization that serves Grundy and LaSalle counties, spends $800 to $1,200 every month transporting feral and stray cats to PAWS Chicago to have them spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

In addition to the Trap-Neuter-Return program, Spay It Forward helps reduce costs on spaying and neutering for dog and cat owners. It also has provided medical attention to other cats, such as surgery for one with two broken legs, another that required a feeding tube and so many others, said volunteer Anja Carlson.

A new program through the charity is cremation and return services for pets who have died in house fires, so pet owners can find closure.

Besides assisting with transportation and procedural costs, organization President and Founder Jennifer Bilyeu, along with volunteers, feed the colonies of cats and strays that have been or will be served through Spay It Forward.

Spay It Forward and its multiple programs continue working thanks to help from the community, such as reduced costs for medical care and fundraisers.

Matt Johnson, manager at the Animal Care Hospital in Morris, joined in the fundrais-

ing efforts recently after stray cat Sardine needed some quick medical attention last month and foster mom Carlson couldn’t run him up to Ottawa.

During January and February, for every senior pet screening or pre-surgical lab work done at the Animal Care Hospital, it will donate $5 to Spay It Forward. So far, the veterinary hospital has raised $500 for the organization.

Donation boxes for Spay It Forward are located at the Fraternal Order of Eagles on Liberty Street in Morris.

During March and April, Spay It Forward will be the charity of choice at Blackbird’s Bowl pet supply store on Liberty Street. There will be an Easter egg hunt, with proceeds going to the organization, April 4at Crotty Park in Seneca and a bake sale May 30 at Wal-Mart in Morris.

Spay It Forward’s annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser, “Spay-ghetti, No Balls” (meatballs are extra) will be held at Fat Daddy’z Bar and Grill in Seneca on April 25. The Steve Sharp Band will perform and there will be raffles.

Other local businesses, such as Wal-Mart, Blackbird’s Bowl and Country Brothers supply store, have donated food supplies and other items, Bilyeu said.

“We survive off volunteers and donations,” Bilyeu said.

“That’s how we do what we do.

BY KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – A beautiful yellow tabby cat, which came to be known as Sardine, started hanging out last October on Anja and Ken Carlson’s porch in Morris.

They fed the stray, knowing he sought refuge under their porch from the elements.

Perhaps Sardine knew he had found a safe place, since Anja is a volunteer for Spay It Forward, a low-cost animal

spay and neutering organization based in Seneca.

Anja tried repeatedly to capture the cat in a live trap.

In December, after he was missing for three days, he showed up again, this time with an injured paw.

Anja called upon Spay It Forward President and Founder Jennifer Bilyeu for help. They set up a drop trap and Anja put a sardine inside to entice the cat.

On the first try, the stray got the sardine and escaped, hence his name. But on the

second try, Sardine was caught.

Upon closer examination, a portion of Sardine’s tail bone was exposed and infected. He had an injured paw and four teeth remaining – two broken and a third infected.

But Sardine also is a very affectionate, tame cat.

“Clearly he was someone’s pet,” Anja said.

Sardine’s injuries are not uncommon for cats living on the streets, Bilyeu said. They get into fights, many of them mate, spreading diseases such as feline AIDS (FIV) and feline leukemia.

Cats end up living outdoors when families have to move and can’t take them along or can no longer afford to care for their pets.

Sardine is one of the lucky former strays. He is doing well, has gained more than two pounds since having 5 inches of his infected tail amputated and awaits dental surgery for his broken and infected teeth.

Spay It Forward paid to have Sardine neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and dewormed. They also paid

LOCAL NEWS County satisfied with insurance change New company’s representatives readily available to employees

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Personnel Committee Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said she is happy with the service provided by the county’s new insurance group, Williams-Manny Insurance Group, based in Rockford.

“Insurance is so confusing to so many,” Geiger said.

“One reason we went with Williams-Manny was because we wanted employees to have access to talk to someone faceto-face.”

Last May, Personnel Committee members and then-Human Resource Director Debra Johnson started a discussion about switching the county’s insurance brokers, due to alleged communication and professionalism issues. The proposed change caused heated discussions.

In June, Morris-based Northern Insurance Group, which had been the county’s insurance broker for five years, was replaced by Williams-Manny Insurance Group. As part of the contract with Williams-Manny, the insurance group agreed to be available in Grundy County for employees to discuss claims or concerns.

“They come to the buildings to discuss options with people,” Geiger said.

Stacy McCarthy, an employee who works in the nursing department with the Grundy County Health Department, said she’s found the new broker to be accessible.

Kathy Morris, account manager from Williams-Manny Insurance Group, sent out a letter to employees who receive insurance last year explaining the on-site visits, which are part of the services provided to the county.

The letter also included dates and locations for on-site visits.

Geiger said one of the things & she likes most about the onsite service is that the account manager rotates through the courthouse, the administration building, and the highway department in an attempt to be accessible to all employees.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said he believes the county has had better representation with the new group and more accessibility, which is what they looked for in an insurance group.

Friends, family and students gathered to witness the marriage of the letter Q, portrayed by Addy Savoia, and the letter U, portrayed by Joshua Munsell, kindergarten students at I.C.S. in Morris this week.

“We are gathered here today to join Q and U in matri-

mony,” I.C.S. Principal Kim DesLauriers said at the start of the ceremony. “They will be together forever to spell words such as quarter, quack, quill, quiver, quiet, queen, quilt, quick, question, quandary, quartet, quip and quest.”

The wedding has become a tradition for I.C.S. students, who have walked down the aisle for 15 years, DesLauriers said.

“The first kids who participated are now in college,” DesLauriers said. “Former kindergarten teacher Maureen Keegan started the tradition and then wrote the book ‘The Wedding of Q and U.’ Other kindergarten teachers have

Sheriff offers hunter safety education classes Registration open now for residents of Grundy County MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan’s office will be hosting an Illinois Department of Natural Resources hunter safety education course.

The classes will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 18 and

from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 19.

The class will be held in the Sheriff’s Department Training Room located in the lower level of the James L. Olson Law Enforcement Center at 111 E. Illinois Ave. in Morris.

Area residents will have an opportunity to learn the basic principles of hunter safety during the two-day course.

The education material is based on a sixth-grade reading level.

Nicor: Beware of carbon monoxide MORRIS DAILY HERALD As temperatures plummet, Nicor Gas reminds customers of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning when using home heating appliances.

Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless and tasteless and has become known as the “silent killer,” according to a news release from Nicor Gas. It is produced when any fossil fuel, including natural gas, is burned.

When fossil fuels do not burn properly, CO can build up and cause sickness – even death.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, on average about 170 people in the United States die every year from CO produced by nonautomotive consumer products.

These products include malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, ranges, water heaters and room heaters; engine-powered equipment such as portable generators; fireplaces; and charcoal that is burned in homes and other enclosed areas. CO kills hundreds of people every year and makes thousands more ill.

Safety measures

Never heat your home with your gas range or oven. Never burn charcoal inside your home or garage. Always open the chimney flue when you use your fireplace. Never run a combustion engine, such as your car, lawn mower or snowblower, in enclosed areas, according to the release.

Install a CO detector

Install a CO detector near all bedrooms in the house.

Do not install a detector near your kitchen or garage or in a room with a furnace. If your detector goes off and you feel ill, leave the house and call 911 or the local fire department. If you do not feel ill, push your detector’s reset button. If the alarm goes off again after a few minutes, open the windows, leave the house and call 911 or the local fire department.

Sardine, who is 6 to 8 years old, will be up for adoption once he has recuperated. He is FIV positive, but can live out his life without complications or spreading it to an uninfected cat through casual contact, Bilyeu said. Since he is neutered, mating is of no interest to Sardine.

“If it weren’t for Spay It Forward, Ken and I wouldn’t have been able to help Sardine,” Anja said.

Spay It Forward also helps hundreds of other feral cats living in colonies in places such as the Woodsmoke Ranch RV campground in Seneca,

where it’s estimated 300 cats are living, as well as cats living on farms and in neighborhoods in Grundy and LaSalle counties.

Some of the cats in colonies were once someone’s pets, evident by declawing and other procedures they had done.

That’s how the colonies get started.

True feral cats aren’t typically even a nuisance. They stay out of sight and don’t bother people, Bilyeu said. But they keep reproducing and spreading disease.

Bilyeu estimates she has trapped, neutered/spayed and released 1,800 cats back into the wild over the years. She also has transported another roughly 500 cats for people who can’t afford to do so themselves.

Feral cats cannot be made into pets because they will attempt to return to the wild.

So Spay It Forward, through its Trap-Neuter-Return program, has the animals fixed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Their left ear tips are taken off as a universal sign they have been fixed (there aren’t nerve endings in the ear tip).

The feral colonies also are taken care of by volunteers who drop off food and water in designated spots on a regular basis.

Bilyeu spends six hours every day delivering food and trapping cats, after her regular full-time job.

Once they get their workup done, adoptable cats go to foster homes and are adopted out through the organization’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/SpayItForward.

Spay It Forward transports from 20 to 30 cats to PAWS Chicago every month. Some come from the wild. Others are strays living in people’s barns and even garages. People feed them, but can’t afford all the medical care.

Bilyeu will trap and transport those cats as well. They are returned to the families who care for them. If one is picked up by animal con-

trol, the microchip will trace it back to the organization, which can then identify who is caring for it.

Animal rescues and shelters are very important in the cycle, but stopping cats from reproducing goes to cure the bigger problem, Bilyeu said.

To those who ask why Bilyeu doesn’t just have the feral cats euthanized, she said, “I am not God, it’s not my choice to make. It’s cheaper to trap, neuter and return than it is to euthanize them.”

Loving pet owners could help by not letting their cats roam around where they will mate and spread disease, Anja said.

“People should keep their pets inside,” Anja said. “It’s the responsible thing to do.”

Morris police union endorses Houston MORRIS - The Morris police union has announced it’s endorsement of Alderman Julian Houston for re-election.

The Metropolitan Alliance of Police Morris Police Chapter 63 stated in a news release it supports and endorses incumbent Houston for the position of 2nd Ward alderman in the Feb. 24 Republican primary election.

Union President Doris Noll confirmed the endorsement Wednesday.

“I thank them for supporting and backing me in this election,” Houston said in the news release.

Senior forward makes history, ends career with 1,162 points

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – With slightly more than two minutes remaining in the third quarter Wednesday night against Lincoln-Way West, Morris senior forward Julie Jurasits was all alone under the basket. Mya Shannon, who had just secured a loose ball, spotted her and threw her a pass.

Jurasits, one point behind Brittanie Crose for the Morris program’s all-time career scoring lead when she caught the pass, put the ball off the backboard and into the hoop for her 10th point of the night and 1,159th of her career. At the next stoppage of play, Morris coach Kate Carey sent a sub in for Jurasits and the bench stood and cheered for her as she took a well-deserved rest.

She later added a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to finish her evening with 13 points and end her unparalleled career with 1,162.

“I knew I was close, but I didn’t know exactly how many points I needed when the game started,” said Jurasits, who wll continue her career next year at University of Missouri-St. Louis.

“I was told different numbers by different people,” Jurasits said. “It didn’t really matter to me. Not having an exact number in my head helped me just go out and relax and play.”

The constant pressure of the Lincoln-Way West defense helped keep Jurasits scoreless in the first quarter.

She finally got into the scoring column in the second quarter when she was fouled underneath and made both free throws.

She followed that with a 3-pointer and finished the first half with five points, halfway to what she needed that night to break the record.

semifinal game, the drama in the second half shifted from the outcome of the game to Jurasits’ pursuit of the record.

She scored Morris’ first basket of the second half to give her seven points and then made a free throw to bring her total to eight. One more free throw tied the record and a basket broke it.

Then, a battle for a loose ball broke out near the top of the key and Shannon picked it up. The Lincoln-Way West players, anticipating a turnover, had started up the court, leaving Jurasits alone under the basket. With 2:03 left in the third quarter, she broke the record.

After sitting for a while, Jurasits returned to the floor in the fourth quarter and made a 3-pointer from the corner for the final basket of her career.

“This was a big night for Julie,” Carey said. “It’s a very exciting milestone for her. We are going to miss her. She’s not the type of player you replace.

When a player like her leaves, the whole dynamic of the team changes. No one person is going to step in and do what Julie did for us.”

Redskins face tough competition in regional against Warriors

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Back in December, the Morris girls basketball team lost a 66-36 decision to Lincoln-Way West in the Ottawa Christmas Tournament.

The two teams met again Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Class 3A Providence Catholic Regional. The Warriors entered play as the No. 1 seed in the regional with a 24-1 record.

Morris, meanwhile, was the fourth seed and had played a tough game against fifth-seeded Coal City the night before, beating the Coalers 47-43.

In the previous meet ing, Morris was tied with Lincoln-Way West midway through the first quarter before the Warriors made a run to take control. They didn’t wait as long Wednesday, jumping out to an 8-0 lead en route to a 71-49 win. Lincoln-Way West, which plays Joliet Catholic Academy for the regional title tonight at 7, was on the mark from the start, as Dani Morgan

bookended a pair of 3-pointers around a basket down low from Courtney O’Donnell to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead.

Mya Shannon got the Redskins, who finish with a 19-9 record, on the board with a 3-pointer before Morgan answered with one of her own. After another Shannon trey, West’s Emily Atsinger hit a 3-pointer, then converted a steal into a layup and was fouled, completing the old-fashioned 3-point play.

Atsinger scored again, then Kaitlyn Mathews and Morgan made 3-pointers around a driving basket by Shannon, and West took a 25-8 lead after one quarter.

“We knew they would be a challenge,” Morris coach Kate Carey said. “They have a great team with super athletes, and when they are making threes like they were, there isn’t much you can do.”

The Warriors made 6 of 8 3-point attempts in the first quarter alone and finished the game with 11 made 3s. Morris countered with eight 3-pointers of its own, but the Redskins

Lincoln-Way West continued the pressure in the second quarter, but Morris was able to adjust and score 14 points in the frame. The Warriors scored 16 of their own and took

a 41-22 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, West scored the first four points on baskets by McDonnell and Stephanie McDonald, then got a 3-pointer by Deven Bax to make it 48-24. With nearly six minutes gone in the third, Morris’ Julie Jurasits scored

for her 10th point of the game, making her the program’s alltime leading scorer.

Jurasits added a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high 13 points.

Shannon, who scored all eight of Morris’ points in the first quarter, finished with 12 points, while Jessica Ponce had seven and Leona Burton and Jessica Jurak each scored five. Jurasits, Shannon, Ponce and Jurak will all take part in the 3-Point Showdown before tonight’s regional title game.

Lincoln-Way West took a 59-34 lead into the fourth quarter, and Morris outscored the Warriors 15-12 in the final quarter. Ponce scored the first five points of the quarter before Jurak scored. Jurasits hit a 3-pointer, Burton scored on a putback and Emily Burling made a 3-pointer for Morris’ final basket of the season.

“I am happy with the effort our girls gave,” Carey said.

“We never gave up, and we showed that all season. We won nine games last year. Our goal this year was to win 20, and we finished with 19. In no way am I disappointed.

“I am thrilled with how these girls played this year. It was never a one-man or twoman show. It was a total team effort all year.”

Time again for Bassmaster Classic, a fisherman’s dream It’s that time of year again.

Today, Saturday, and Sunday, 56 of the world’s best anglers will be vying for the crown of Bassmaster Classic Champion. This year’s event takes place on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. The current conditions are horrendous for that part of the world. They are dealing with freezing temperatures and unstable conditions. It should be a real test of both physical and mental toughness.

Several years ago the anglers faced mighty cold temps on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in Oklahoma. One of the anglers there commented that there is no sense in complain-

The lucky angler that perseveres through these conditions will walk away with an extra $300,000 in their pocket. I, too, think I might be able to brave the cold if those dollars ended up in my bank account.

One of the more notable facts about this year’s classic is that Kevin VanDam will not be fishing it this year. This is

the first time since 1990 that he has failed to qualify for the big event. No doubt he has thought a lot about that. It has got to be tough working the expo and watching all the other guys hit the lake.

The first Classic was held on Lake Mead in Nevada.

First place was $10,000. A far cry from what the winner will take home this weekend. This first ever Classic was held in the fall. Bobby Murray won that event. The Classic was moved to a summer event in 1984, and in 2006 it was moved to a late winter event.

The Classic victor used to get $500,000, but that payout was changed in 2014.

Both Rick Clunn and VanDam have won the Classic four times. An amazing feat considering it is extremely difficult just to qualify. The most consecutive Classics qualified for is held by Clunn with 28.

VanDam holds the record for the heaviest total winning weight and the lightest total winning weight during the five bass limit era. His heaviest total was 69-11 in 2011. His lightest winning total was 12-15 in 2005 in Pittsburgh.

Preston Clark holds the record far largest single bass caught in a Classic. He attained the record in 2006 on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain.

The 1981 Classic holds the record for the youngest angler to ever win. Stanley Mitchell was just 21 at the time. Woo Daves was the oldest winner (54) when he claimed the title in 2000.

I look forward to seeing who can tough out the conditions this weekend to take home the top prize. This one event will drive the industry for the next year.

Fishing for a living has a certain allure. The Bassmaster Classic is the culmination of that dream.

Drone regulations need more privacy protections The first time a drone flies over a Silicon Valley neighborhood it will be a novelty. The second, third and fourth flyovers will generate legitimate questions about privacy, public safety and future applications of their use.

The FAA on Sunday released its long-awaited proposed set of rules for the use of nonmilitary drones weighing under 55 pounds.

The proposed guidelines don’t go far enough to protect Americans’ privacy and go too far in restricting reasonable drone use in an effort to ensure the safety of our airways.

Protecting the public’s privacy should be the FAA’s first priority.

The National Security Agency’s assaults on basic privacy rights makes it essential that the FAA spell out what constitutes unwarranted intrusions into our lives.

The FAA rules allow the use of data gathered by domestic drones for any ‘authorized purpose.’ That leaves the door wide open for abuse at all levels of government.

The rules should be clear. The government should make it illegal for law enforcement agencies to use drones to spy on Americans without a warrant, unless an emergency situation threatening the public safety dictates an exception.

No one likes the notion of an outof-control, 55-pound drone dropping like a rock in our neighborhoods or business areas. But a flat-out ban on the potential of drone delivery services is being overly cautious, especially when our European competitors, such as Germany, are making rapid strides in allowing their use. A restriction against nighttime flights will also make drones much less effective in agricultural areas.

The FAA is opening the proposed regulations for public comment for 60 days. The final rules likely won’t go into effect before 2017. The FAA should use the time to strengthen its privacy protections and re-visit the rules on nighttime drone use and visual-only operations.

Americans still confused about the many different Islams A week after 9/11, President George W. Bush told a hurting nation: “The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace.”

Faced with a tsunami of hellish news about the Islamic State in Syria, Iraq and the Levant, President Barack Obama updated that soundbite this past fall: “ISIL is not ‘Islamic.’ No religion condones the killing of innocents. ... ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple.”

The problem, of course, is that Islamic State leaders keep serving up quotes such as the following, part of the judgments rendered by the leader of recent rites to behead 21 Coptic Christians, filmed on a

icans remain uncertain when asked questions about Islam – such as whether the Islamic State represents one approach, or even the dominant approach, to Islam today.

Some are even concerned that Sharia, or Islamic law, may find its way to the United States, according to new surveys conducted by LifeWay Research.

“From all of the questions we asked, we would summarize that a little less than a quarter of Americans have a strongly held belief that Islam is dangerous by nature, a little less than a quarter have a strongly held belief that Islam is peaceful by nature, and over half of Americans don’t share one of these strong

opinions or are unsure what to believe,” said Ed Stetzer, LifeWay’s executive director.

While the “somewhat agree” and “disagree” numbers vary from question to question, there is no doubt that the “not sure” numbers are “definitely higher than we typically see,” he added.

In particular, White House insiders can see that “the whole ‘the Islamic State is not Islamic’ idea is not winning the day,” said Stetzer. “Now, some people will disagree with whatever this president says simply because the sky is blue. But people are watching news reports day after day. ... It’s pretty hard to believe that ISIS has nothing to do with Islam when that is the

primary way that ISIS keeps describing itself.”

One positive implication of the results on that question, noted Stetzer, is that it does appear that many Americans understand that there are “many forms of Islam.”

While it’s hard for many Americans to believe that the Islamic State is “not Islamic,” they may believe that this movement is only a radical form of this faith, and not the norm.

In yesterday’s deal, declarer needed to finesse in clubs three times through his right-hand opponent. But since he had no other dummy entry left, that required, on the first round, leading the lowest club in the dummy that could win the trick.

That is a reliable rule, but when a double finesse (two finesses in the same suit) is involved, a different approach might be needed. In this deal, West starts the defense against four spades with the club king and another club. After South ruffs at trick two, how should he continue?

South’s jump to game is reasonable, given the big trump fit.

Declarer has five potential losers: two hearts, two diamonds and one club. He has only eight top tricks: seven spades and one heart. So, to make his contract, South needs to find East with at least one heart honor and the diamond ace. But that might require leading three times from the dummy: to take two heart finesses and to lead toward the diamond king. With only two trump entries, care is required.

Declarer should cash his spade king, lead a spade to dummy’s queen and play a low heart to his jack, not run the 10 or nine.

West wins and leads the club queen. South ruffs, crosses to dummy’s spade ace, and runs the heart 10.

When that wins, declarer can play a diamond toward his king to get home.
