Born: April 18, 1965; in Blue Island, IL Died: Feb. 16, 2015; in Morris, IL Deborah M. Kirsch, age 49, of Morris, passed away Monday February 16, 2015, at the Morris Hospital, with her family at her bedside. Born April 18, 1965, in Blue Island, Deborah was the daughter of Robert and Rose Marie (Dwyer) Palmer. Deborah was a young, energetic woman, who was described by family as being the family jokester and always the life of the party. She had a love for all animals, bringing a variety of pets home. She especially loved her family and her large circle of friends.

Deborah is survived by her mother, Rose Marie Palmer; husband, Peter; daughters, Heidi (Seth and Zoewie), and Kristin; brother, William Palmer; uncle, Ronald Palmer; and several other aunts, uncles and in-laws.

She is preceded in death by her father; daughter, Abbey Nicole; and her biological mother, Diane Palmer.

Visitation will be held on Thursday February 19, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 West Washington Street in Morris.

Born: Aug. 9, 1932; in Prairie Center, IL Died: Feb. 16, 2015; in LaSalle, IL Roger M. Varland, age 82, of Morris, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2015, at the Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle. Born August 9, 1932, in Prairie Center, Illinois, he was the son of the late Wilbur and May (Olson) Varland.

Roger’s family moved to Grundy County when he was a young boy. He graduated from Morris High School with the Class of 1950, and attended the University of Illinois. Roger served with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Norma (Schmanske) Poole on August 23, 1969.

Roger served on the board for the Nettle Creek School District for many years. He enjoyed farming and working on cars, trucks and farm equipment.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; children, Beth Varland, Brad Varland, Debbie Heap, Sherri Poole and Randy Poole, all of Morris; and grandchildren, Aaron Heap, Ryann Heap and Dakota Rogers, all of Morris.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Allen and Willis Varland.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Father Edward J. Howe, CR as presider. Inurnment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Sermon explains day’s meaning

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Parishioners filled Immaculate Conception Church on Wednesday to hear the words of the Rev. Ed Howe as he discussed the true meaning of Ash Wednesday and its significance within the Catholic Church.

“Sometimes Ash Wednesday is misunderstood,” Howe said after the second Mass of the day. “People focus on receiving the ashes but are missing the point that it is a time to repent and believe, which is the journey of Lent.”

At many Ash Wednesday services, the priest or minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers.

Howe said many have given a holy significance to the ashes, which are not holy by themselves.

“There is nothing holy about these ashes unless you make a commitment,” he said.

When one makes a commitment for the next 40 days of Lent, then he or she is doing what Jesus wants, Howe said.

Students joined parishioners at the 8:15 a.m. Mass, the second of four Masses offered Wednesday, often held with standing-room only crowds.

Howe said Ash Wednesday is the most attended service each year at Immaculate Conception. The only other day it holds four Masses is on Christmas.

“It’s a holy day of obligation. More come on Ash Wednesday then on Easter, which is kind of backwards,” Howe said after Mass. “We have people from other denominations who also come to receive ashes.”

Jillian Munsell of Minooka, an eighth-grade student at Immaculate Conception School, said Lent is a time of new beginning, of helping others and giving up something to give others a chance to have what they need.

As a family, the Munsells will give up TV on weekdays, and Jillian will give up her iPod for the next 40 days while donating $1 each day to Rice Bowls, a nonprofit organization that helps feed the world’s hungry children.

Seventh-grade student Eli Davy of Morris said he will give up ice cream and waffles, his two favorite foods, for Lent. He also is going to attempt for the second time to read the Book of Revelations, a goal he set out to achieve before but stopped after getting about halfway through.

Students are asked to participate in the Mass and they performed music, led prayers, and took part in Howe’s sermon by answering questions about Ash Wednesday and Lent.

Students from kindergarten through eighth grade responded with answers defining Lent as a time to follow what God

says, a time to be kind to others, to give something up, and help the poor and sick.

“Lent is your invitation every year to change,” Howe said during his sermon. “We need to ask, how do we deepen our belief in God?” When Howe asked the children why they give up meat for Lent, one student responded, “Because Jesus gave his life on the cross.”

ing up meat, in and of itself, isn’t what matters. It’s knowing that you are abstaining for your sins. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the season of Lent in Western Christianity. Lent takes place in the 40 days, not counting Sundays, prior to Easter.

Many Christians, including those of the Catholic faith, prepare for Easter by fasting, or abstaining from an indulgence they enjoy.

By JESSICA BOURQUE Shaw Media Correspondent COAL CITY – Coal City student Juliana Gomien loves swinging across monkey bars, climbing up slides and gliding on swings as much as the next fifth-grade kid. But that’s no longer what she thinks about when she sees a playground.

She and a group of about 20 Coal City Intermediate School classmates have spent more than a year researching and designing a new playground for their school, which has left them with a deeper understanding of parks and play

areas. “[Juliana and I] saw a play structure and our first thought was, ‘Wow, how much do you think this one cost,’ ” Juliana’s mother Terry Gomien said. “It was so cool. That’s how they start thinking now. … They understand everything that goes into it because they’re going through this process themselves.”

The students are keenly aware of playground prices.

Many were surprised when they realized just how much it would cost to install new equipment at their school, said Coal City teacher and project

leader Betsy Cowherd.

The idea to replace the school’s old playground germinated last year, when Juliana and about 20 others students joined Coal City Intermediate School’s talented and gifted program. Cowherd, the program leader, wanted students to work on a project that would enrich both the school and community. They decided a new playground was sorely needed and would benefit everyone.

To install and purchase the single-structure playground the students put together, they will need to raise at least $30,000. The daunting price tag has not stopped them. With help from parents and teachers, they’ve organized a campaign through the online platform Kickstarter, which will launch Friday.

Kickstarter is a program used to crowdsource funding for projects. Through the website, students set fundraising goals and make a pitch to potential donors. Their pitch includes a student-made video detailing why a new playground is important and how it will benefit the community, and gives a detailed description of how the donated money will be used.

If someone likes the pitch, he or she can pledge to back the project with any dollar amount. If enough money is pledged, the project moves forward. If not, the students will need to find another funding source.

“We had to find something where people could pledge money, but if the project didn’t make it, then they could still get their money back and it

wouldn’t cost the school anything,” Cowherd said.

To encourage higher donations, the students came up with rewards for those who back the project, including T-shirts, thank you cards, a shout-out on the project website and more. Cowherd said those who donate the most will be invited to the grand opening of the new playground and will be among the first to play on the new equipment.

“The challenge for them was thinking of rewards that wouldn’t cost too much additional money,” Cowherd said.

The group has dubbed the initiative “Project Play” and spent many months getting to this point. Before the project was approved, the students made presentations to the Coal City School Board. They also learned about loans and other funding resources from local businesses, and researched the safety features needed for their equipment.

“It’s totally been the kids project. They’ve been behind everything and it’s been a great learning experience for them,” Cowherd said.

Coal City Intermediate School is holding a school assembly Friday where the students will launch the Kickstarter and excite the rest of the student body.

Cowherd said she will make the first pledge during the assembly to illustrate how it’s done.

Once the Kickstarter page is live, anyone can pledge.

Rauner proposes spending cuts to Medicaid, higher education

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Area lawmakers had mixed reactions to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget cuts – which he called the state’s “last, best chance to get our house in order.”

Republican lawmakers argued the spending plan Rauner presented Wednesday was well-balanced with increased funding for education and is the “great, first step” toward improving the state’s financial crisis.

But his proposed deep cuts to Medicaid – along with cuts to other areas, including human services, higher education and local governments – didn’t go over too well with local social service agencies and Democrat lawmakers.

The proposed spending plan also calls for the elimination of some programs for people with developmental disabilities, including para-transit services.

Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment, but said in an emailed statement from her office that Rauner’s proposal serves as a “cold dose of reality.”

“Our budget crisis is what happens when you have one-party rule for more than a decade. It’s no surprise the budget decisions that will have to be made to get our state back on its fiscal track are difficult,” Rezin said in the statement. “The solutions to our fiscal problems are deep, so fixing them requires bold reforms, very tough decisions,

and the courage to make it happen.”

But Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said Rauner’s cuts – which involve going deep into the pockets of higher education institutions – will not fly with the Democrat-controlled House and Senate.

“All of his [higher education] cuts mean is that cost will be passed on to students through tuition and fees,” Walsh Jr. said. “This is his wish list. It’s up to us to put together a budget. I don’t think some of his suggestions are going to go very far.”

Rauner’s plan also relies on $2.2 billion in anticipated savings with his newly proposed pension reform package.

Walsh Jr. also said Rauner’s inclusion of the estimates savings in this year’s budget plan is dishonest, considering his reform package has yet to be vetted in court with ongoing lawsuit challenges.

During his budget address, Rauner said the state would have to make some “difficult choices” that “no one wants to make.”

“In it, we end the irresponsible and reckless practices of the past, and make sure they will never happen again,” Rauner said.

“This is our last, best chance to get our house in order,” Rauner said.

trict 54 would be as significant as the estimates from IASB. “I think we will save at least $2,000 in man hours and maybe a few hundred dollars in paper and ink,” Shaw said.

Shaw said it will be embedded into the website before next month’s meeting.

In other business, the school board meetings for March and April have been changed to the third Tuesday of the month, instead of Monday, due to scheduling conflicts. The dates are March 17 and April 21.

Ottawa trips up Morris, claims NIB 12 west title Pirates zoom past Redskins in second half with double-figure lead

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The Gassman dispensed premium – play, that is – and the Ottawa Pirates celebrated an outright Northern Illinois Big 12 west boys basketball championship on Morris’ floor Tuesday night.

Ottawa junior Isaac Gassman scored a career-high 30 points and added 12 rebounds to power the Pirates past the Redskins, 66-59.

Now 9-1 in conference play, the Pirates will try to finish the regular season strong with some of the pressure off as the Redskins hope to salvage a spot near the top of the NIB 12 East.

“We had a lot of guys that did good things tonight,” Ottawa coach Mark Cooper said after Brett Johnson and Keating Rombach joined Gassman in double figures. “(Gassman) was able in the first half to score a few times to give us a cushion. … Winning conference championships are very difficult, and our group is to be commended.”

Morris (16-8, 6-5) also had three in double figures – Austin Patterson with 25 points, Evan Bjelland with 16 and Griffin Sobol with 10 – but found itself playing from behind from a second-quarter Gassman layup through the finish.

That basket was the second in a 11-0 run that stretched from the end of the first quarter, which Morris finished ahead 15-13, well into the second.

“We did not defend. That was 90 percent of our discussion after the game. We did not make them earn their baskets in the second quarter,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said.

“They seemed to be able to get into the lane whenever they wanted. Thirty-one points in a half is unacceptable.”

After Ottawa had answers to virtually every Morris basket early in the second half, the Redskins made a run late in the third. Back-to-back Bjelland baskets and the third Patterson 3 of the quarter cut the Morris deficit to 45-43 entering the fourth.

The momentum, and the score, quickly went the other direction from there. Baskets

by Ottawa’s Mike Tucker and Johnson opened the fourth,

and after a Bjelland threepoint play appeared to give Morris a spark, the Pirates scored 13 of the next 16 points to push their lead into double figures.

The lead was healthy enough that eight late points from Patterson – it would have been 11 had a 3-pointer at the buzzer counted – were of little consequence.

“I specifically remember two possessions,” Blumberg said. “Johnson dribbles across the half line into the lane and scores, we go down and take a selfish, quick shot, and the next possession, someone else – I think Rambach – into the lane again, unconstested 14-footer. Horrible stretch there. They’re too good of a free-throw shooting team for us to recover from that.”

Elder abuse is on the rise, and the perpetrators are surprising: family members. According to the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA), “The most common abusers are sons, daughters, grandchildren, or spouses who may have substance abuse, gambling or other financial problems. They may be unemployed, and feel justified in taking what they believe is ‘almost’ or ‘rightfully’ theirs.”

NCPEA explains that people over age 50 maintain about 70 percent of the nation’s wealth.

Add loneliness, frailty, and neediness to a sizable bank account, and the elderly may become desirable targets to those closest to them.

Perpetrators seek victims who are isolated, unfamiliar with their finances, have recently lost a spouse, and suffer from physical or mental disabilities. The criminals steal money, forge checks, use credit cards, and deceptively take what’s not theirs.

Other abusers include caregivers who have access to the elderly’s assets, and are unable to resist taking advantage of their vulnerable employers. Additional perpetrators scan the obituaries to identify widows and widowers who may succumb to a sympathetic stranger offering a “great deal.” Some legitimate professionals may victimize the elderly by overcharging for their services or products.

Clues of financial elder abuse include unpaid bills, notices to discontinue utilities, unexplained bank withdrawals or money transfers, missing belongings, suspicious signatures on checks, or altered or missing legal documents.

To combat abuse, people are advised to shred papers with personal information, such as merchandise receipts, bank statements, and unused credit cards. Individuals should monitor their credit report annually through resources such as annualcreditreport.com.

GOP must pass DHS bill Congressional Republicans bungled just about every chance to take action on immigration reform. President Barack Obama, eventually, took action on immigration reform.

So the GOP doesn’t want to fund the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS is set to run out of money Feb. 27. For all its faults, DHS should not be the political football with which the Republican-controlled Congress attempts to score a touchdown against President Obama.

This is the agency, created by President George W. Bush in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, whose mission is to prevent any additional terrorist attack on American soil, secure borders, safeguard cyberspace and enforce immigration laws.

So far, the Senate has tried three times to pass a DHS funding bill. All three tanked.

Last month, the House passed a bill to finance the department, but it included language that would kill Obama’s executive action, protecting from deportation 5 million undocumented immigrants.

Senate Democrats have been standing firm, pushing for an unsul-

lied funding bill, going so far as to stage a filibuster to keep Republican lawmakers from taking an action on the bill.

First, the president, who dragged his own feet, finally took executive action in November to shield from deportation illegal immigrants who have children who are U.S. citizens.

It was an overdue, limited and fair step to get a handle on the mess that is U.S. immigration policy.

Second, what the president did was perfectly legal.

Third, he will veto any measure that undoes his executive order.

That means that Republicans will be responsible for defunding the Department of Homeland Security as terrorism continues to hit, if not close to home, American families who have lost loved ones in ISIS’ fight against the West.

For sure, DHS has real issues to address – last year, an independent report criticized Border Protections’ “lack of diligence” in investigating fatal encounters in which its agents were involved.

This, of course, is how the game is played. But ensuring citizens’ safety is nothing to play with.

There is hardly a bridge deal that goes by without at least one finesse being attempted. Sometimes, though, how that finesse is approached can be key. In today’s deal, how should South play in three no-trump? West leads the heart five. East wins with his queen and returns the suit to dummy’s now-bare ace.

South’s two-no-trump rebid shows 18 or 19 high-card points (or a great 17 or poor 20) and is in principle game-forcing. The responder then has the three-level to investigate strains other than no-trump and, perhaps, to start a slam investigation.

Since the lead has removed dummy’s only fast entry, South cannot use dummy’s diamonds. Instead, he must hope to take one spade, one heart, three diamonds and four clubs. To get those club tricks, though, might require taking three club finesses.

Declarer must stay in the dummy throughout. First, he must run the club nine. When that wins, he continues with the club queen. Then East has no defense.

Note, though, that if South starts with dummy’s club queen, East can defeat the contract by playing low to this trick. Then what does declarer do? If he follows suit with his club three, he must take the second club trick in his hand and cannot finesse for a third time.

Or, if he unblocks his 10 or jack, then leads dummy’s nine, East can cover with his queen. East’s eight will beat declarer’s three on the fourth round of the suit.

Don’t make drinking energy drinks, shots a daily habit Dear Dr. K: I have two kids and a high pressure job. I’m always exhausted. Lately, I’ve been drinking an energy drink in the afternoon to get through the day. My husband thinks this is dangerous. Is he right?

Dear Reader: I’m sure many readers can relate to the mid-afternoon slump.

It’s no wonder energy drinks and shots have become the fastest-growing category in the beverage industry.

What gives energy drinks their jolt is good old-fashioned caffeine. It occurs naturally in coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate, and is added to energy drinks and some soft drinks.

Caffeine is a stimulant. When you consume a food or drink that contains it, your brain

People who regularly consume caffeine develop a tolerance for it – they need to keep increasing their intake to get the same effect. People can become so dependent on caffeine they feel rundown when they don’t get enough.

Energy drinks can contain up to 242 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a serving. In com-

parison, a 5- to 8-ounce cup of coffee contains roughly 100 mg of caffeine. A 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola has 50 mg.

Most energy drinks also contain lots of sugar. Together with the caffeine, this can lead to a jolt of energy and then a crash (just like eating a candy bar). Energy drinks also contain a mix of herbs and other substances that are marketed as “energy boosters,” though they haven’t actually been proven to increase energy.

Many people have reported negative reactions after consuming energy drinks, including heart palpitations, chest pain, high blood pressure, anxiety, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting and flushing.

Here’s the bottom line: If

you need a quick surge of energy, it’s OK to have an occasional energy drink – no more than one a day. But this shouldn’t be a daily or long-term practice. If you’re dragging, it’s far better to drink a single cup of coffee or tea.

Better yet, try these proven nutritional, exercise and lifestyle strategies to help you feel more energized: • Eat small meals and snacks every few hours rather than three large meals a day.

• Drink plenty of water.

• Exercise regularly.

• Get a good night’s sleep.

• Reduce stress with relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation.

As you’ve heard me say more than once in this column:

Most food or drink that’s unhealthy when used regularly is OK to consume occasionally.

That’s surely true of energy drinks.

Unfortunately, most of my patients who have turned to increasingly available energy drinks in recent years do not use them just occasionally.

The drinks tend to become a crutch, a habit. If that’s happened with you, I’d strongly urge you to slowly scale back the number of energy drinks you consume each week, with a goal of getting below one a week.
