ROBERT BATES

Born: Sept. 2, 1938; in Emmerson, KY Died: Feb. 1, 2015; in Odell, IL Robert “Bob” Bates, 76, of Odell, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2015, at his home with his family by his side.

Born on September 2, 1938, in Emmerson, Kentucky, he was the son of the late James Bate and Nina Davis.

Bob grew up in the hills of Kentucky and moved to Morris in 1952. He was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958. In 1959, Bob married Anita Kenney and they had three children over the years.

Robert worked for Diamond National as a laborer for several years. He also worked in HVAC for many years and at AC Paving as a foreman on a road crew. In 1998, Bob retired and moved to Bradenburg, Kentucky where he took a job as the manager of Doe Valley Marina.

He enjoyed his days doing what he loved, fishing and talking with friends. In 2006, Bob moved back to Illinois to be closer to his grandchildren.

His grandkids always looked forward to seeing their Papa.

He always brought donuts or candy for them and had a story to tell. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and was a fan of NASCAR and the University of Kentucky, but his pride and joy were his grandchildren.

Bob was always doing things for others. He was a good friend to many. His kind words and sweet smile will be missed dearly.

Survived by one son, Michael “Bubby” (Susan) Bates of Peru; and two daughters, Sandy Bates of Statesville, NC and Molly (Andy) Jarman of Odell; grandchildren, Justin, Zac (Andrea), Michael, and Brandon Bates; Charity Rose, Craig, and Kyle Sokol; Kaitlyn, Andrew Jr., Gavin, Emma, Zane, and Jared Jarman; and Kyla (Seth) Hedrick; five great-grandchildren, Klay and Matt Smith, Benjamin Hedrick, and Dayshia and Daneyah McCloud. Also surviving are one sister, Ruthie (Jack) Vanderlinden of Braidwood; and two brothers, Richard (Paula) Hamilton of Bossier City, Louisiana and Gary (Gay) Hamilton of San Tan Valley, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nina; and one brother, Ronald Hamilton.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Bob’s Life will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Larson officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the Morris Color Guard. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.

ELOISE A. BIROS Born: Nov. 30, 1921 Died: Feb. 17, 2015

Eloise A. Biros, 93, of rural Seneca, passed away early Tuesday morning, February 17, 2015, at Morris Hospital with her family by her side.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Rev. Philip Peterson officiating. Interment will follow in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Born November 30, 1921, in Seneca, she was the daughter of Oren and Bella(Tesdal)Jackson.

She graduated from Seneca High School with the class of 1939.

She married Alvin Biros on March 9, 1944 at the Stavanger Lutheran Church.

For all of their married life they farmed in the Marseilles and Seneca area. She was employed for several years at the Seneca Shipyards.

She is survived by her children, Susan Thorpe of Seneca and Kathy(Larry)Collins of Marseilles; seven grandchildren, Angie(Joel), Dan(Julie), Steve(Bridget), Tammy(Mike), Adam, Karrie(Rich) and Emily; six great grandchildren, Alex, Tyler, Danielle, Keegan, Spencer and Eloise; one sister, Marvis Blair of Morris and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Alvin on March 4, 1997; two sons, Thomas on May 4, 1974 and Michael on March 13, 1999; one daughter, Karen Bennett on October 7,

Area bakeries make and sell paczki for Fat Tuesday

By Heidi Litchfield hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Fat Tuesday offers a day of indulgence as area residents partake in the traditional Polish pastries paczki.

Peggi Cafferty of Wilmington grew up eating paczki every year, which she said is pronounced “pooch-key.”

Cafferty was at Morris Bakery on Tuesday purchasing a few.

“I grew up eating them.

Moms and grandmas made them,” she said. “My favorite growing up was custard. Today, I’m trying cannoli.”

She said she looks forward to Fat Tuesday, because on Ash Wednesday, she would abstain from eating. Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent, the traditional period of fasting or abstaining ahead of Easter for people of the Catholic faith.

Traditionally, to rid their homes of the fats and sweets in their cupboards, they would cook what was there, which has led to the day before Ash Wednesday becoming a day

of binging on tasty sweetness called Fat Tuesday.

About 16 years ago, Morris Bakery owner and baker Bob Elleson got home after a long night of baking and sat down to watch TV. He saw a segment on a local news show about a polish bakery serving up paczki for Fat Tuesday.

“They showed a Polish bakery and they were talking about it being their busiest day, and I thought, we got to do this next year,” Elleson said.

The first year, he said they made 20 dozen paczki, and they were a hit.

“The following year we made 40 dozen, then 100 dozen, then 200,” he said. “It just kept growing.”

This year, they made 480 dozen paczki. Yes, 5,760 sweet treats to be consumed by their customers.

“I’ve never figured out the calories, but I’m sure it’s at least 700 calories. Do the math, that’s over 4 million calories going out our door,” Elleson said.

He said it’s a lot of work and

it takes a lot of workers and hundreds of hours to prepare for one day.

He bakes alongside his wife Darcy and his children Holly, Lauren and Nicholas, who have all helped come up with new flavors, such as cake batter, raspberry, cannoli and brownie.

One of their creations, maple bacon, uses 30 pounds of bacon in the recipe, which all has to be cooked in addition to the paczki.

The most popular fla vor is fresh strawberry with whipped cream, which has Elleson running to pick up 150 pounds of fresh strawberries in the days leading up to Fat Tuesday. Elleson said Fat Tuesday has become the most prosperous day of the year for his bakery.

Down the street at Enjoi Bake Shop, Cafe and Catering, orders for paczki were taken in advance so owner Cassi Norman could prepare to make the dozen or so different flavors she made available.

Norman said the most popular flavor at her shop also is strawberry and cream.

“We’ve been making paczki for seven years,” she said. “We made 150 for our store and 500

She said when Enjoi began offering the Polish treat, not all of her customers knew what they were or the story behind them.

Once she shared them, the same customers have come back year after year.

“It’s about tradition,” she said. “Once people know about the tradition, they gain interest.”

Both bakeries said many of the more popular flavors run out quickly.

They suggest people order ahead of time to make sure they get the flavor they want.

Morris welcomes new arts festival MDDP looking for more artists to participate

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris City Council heard more details and approved street closings to accommodate the city’s new arts festival in June.

The Morris Downtown Development Partnership this year is transitioning the Liberty Days event into the Liberty Arts Festival, which will be from June 25 through June 27. It will showcase arts of all types, including music, concerts, dance and theatre, as well as children’s events, Julie Applegate, executive director for the MDDP, told the council Tuesday night.

The council approved blocking off Liberty Street between Chapin and Jefferson streets, with the intersections remaining open, for the new Liberty Arts Festival Artists Walk on June 27. The council also approved the closing of Liberty Street between Washington Street and Corleone’s restaurant for a stage June 25 through June 27 to accommodate the

festival.

The tent and risers used for the event will be moved off the main streets and into parking areas once the events wrap up in the evening to open the roads for traffic, Mayor Richard Kopczick said after the meeting.

This past summer, Liberty Days featured a new event, an arts festival, and the success of that event has the MDDP turning the event completely into an arts festival.

“I’ve really felt the last couple of years we could do something a little more exciting,” Applegate said.

Liberty Days was formerly known as Nostalgia Days and consisted of activities for children, a pet parade, concerts and ended with the Liberty 5K Run/Walk. Applegate said the Liberty Arts Festival still will have activities for children and adults, including kids crafts and a chalk artist contest. Local retailers also will holding a chair auction. Food and entertainment also will be a part of the weekend’s events.

year, Applegate said.

“We will have an art walk on Saturday,” she said. “We invite artists to set up tents, sell and demonstrate.”

Last year’s walk had 25 participants and the festival committee expects to double that this year, Applegate said.

“I think it will tweak interest in a lot of diverse folks,” Kopczick said after the meeting. “This could possibly evolve into something big.”

The 5K will continue and will be held July 3.

Channahon hires firm to help recruit retail

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The village of Channahon will work with a national advisory firm to help bring retail business to the community.

Trustees approved Monday a three-year agreement at $36,000 a year with Retail Strategies. The firm also will receive 4 percent of total negotiated packages should it help negotiate incentive agreements.

The work will include performing a market analysis, developing a recruitment plan and recruiting retail businesses that fit Channahon’s available property and demographics. The firm’s representatives will report progress to village staff at least monthly.

“You are heavily under-retailed,” Retail Strategies Business Development Vice President Chip Rodgers told trustees Monday.

Rodgers offered preliminary research indicating residents are spending money out of town at general merchandise stores, full-service restaurants, jewelry stores, family clothing stores, furniture stores and more.

“People are going elsewhere for those services,” he said. “There is significant demand for these retailers in Channahon.”

Rodgers said the company will not just do research, but identify and approach specific retailers and work on recruitment.

“This is another tool in the toolbox,” Village Administrator Tom Durkin said. “It’s another way to get our foot in the door.”

Community Development Director Mike Petrick said the best part of the service is the contacts the established company already has.

Channahon explored hiring strategists last year, but many on the board believed the timing wasn’t right. Trustee Missey Schumacher said she believed now was the time to get serious about retail recruitment.

Village President Joe Cook voiced concern over a possible

conflict of interest, with the firm representing both Channahon and Plainfield. Rodgers said no such conflict would exist, as each village has its own recruiter and the retailers interested in northern Plainfield are likely different than those with interest in Channahon.

Cook also was troubled there was not a detailed contract in place – only a proposal.

“I think the board should have reviewed a contract with Retail Strategies,” he said after the meeting. “They should have negotiated terms that included the village’s ability to cancel the contract ... at the very least, they should have made the caveat for legal review.”

Cook added he also believed the proposal should not have offered a percentage of incentives and that the extra services in the proposal should have included specific rates.

Trustee Scott McMillin voted against the proposal, saying after the meeting he did not feel comfortable spending the money at this time and preferred existing staff take on the work.

Developer agreement OK’d

The Village Board also approved an agreement with Bluestone Retail Partners on behalf of Thornton’s Inc. for the development of the northwest corner of the Route 6/Interstate 55 interchange.

The agreement outlines incentives the village is offering to develop the property.

The developer will receive tax rebates of $2.1 million if the frontage road relocation is completed at the same time as the Illinois Department of Transportation begins interchange improvements and if the fuel center is opened in a timely manner after that.

An additional $1 million will go to the developer if it develops the outlots and a hotel within five years of the fuel station opening. The tax rebates would be in the form of tax increment finance district dollars, sales taxes, fuel taxes and hotel taxes.

The Nettle Creek Board of Education has been studying for the past year the option of putting multiple grades in one classroom, called a multiage classroom, according to a news release from the school.

“We had a teacher retiring and looking at our fourthgrade class being our smallest class, we looked at op-

tions, including combining grades four and five,” Superintendent Don McKinney said Tuesday afternoon.

On Jan. 29, a letter went out to district parents from McKinney on behalf of the Board of Education clarifying the topic of multiage classrooms.

Because of declining enrollment, McKinney said the board has been studying the multiage classroom philosophy since the 2013-14 school year, and in January he and a board member visited two schools using the philosophy, one because of declining enrollment like Nettle Creek is

facing.

Four Nettle Creek teachers were going to visit the same two schools during the week of Feb. 2 and the board was to hear from those teachers and then decide if it was an avenue the school wanted to pursue further.

But the board changed its mind.

On Feb. 5, a Blackboard Connect message went out to parents of Nettle Creek announcing the topic is being tabled and no longer is being considered for the 2015-16 school year.

“Despite the many benefits that the multiage classroom

might bring for Nettle Creek School, the Board of Education made the decision earlier this month to permanently table the topic,” the news release stated.

School board president John Skrapits could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

McKinney said tabling the topic of multiage classrooms does not mean it won’t be discussed further, especially if enrollment numbers continue to decline. But for the moment, the board has decided to continue operating as it has with each grade in a separate classroom with its own

teacher.

Nettle Creek’s average class size is 8.9 students.

McKinney said there are multiple educational benefits that come from the multiage classroom.

That includes saving money by not requiring the hiring of another teacher to replace the one who is retiring at the end of the school year, according to the news release.

Another advantage, according to the news release, would be providing students with a greater network in their classrooms, which allows for greater collaboration and social relationships.

Morris Hospital sponsors mobile food pantry ‘We Care’ organizes events the 2nd Wednesday of each month

By MORRIS DAILY HERALD GARDNER – About 155 area families took part in the mobile food pantry sponsored by Morris Hospital at the Gardner American Legion on Feb. 10.

With a total of 8,857 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 57 pounds of food, including 17 pounds of frozen meat and a wide variety of other items including potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, cheese, lunch meat, frozen meals, desserts and bread.

“We always have an enthusiastic response from our employees when we ask for volunteers for We Care activities, whether it’s a mobile food pantry or fill-the-pantry event,” John Roundtree, strategic planning manager at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers said in a news release.

“Our employees understand that having basic necessities such as food is critical to good health, so we really see this as an extension of our mission,” Roundtree said.

“This was the second time in the last two weeks that Morris Hospital has sponsored an

event to feed those in need in our area. The hospital’s commitment to seeing that our area’s basic needs are met is evident,” We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said in the release.

“And the willingness of their employees to come out to help on a night that was chilling to the bone shows that the level of care for those in need stems throughout the entire organization. We Care is so grateful for their consistent partnership,” Gaska said.

The next mobile food pantry is sponsored by the Latter Day Saints Church of Morris and will be March 11 at the Coal City Early Childhood Education Center, 755 S. Carbon Hill Road.

Registration will begin at 4:15 p.m. To ensure the safety of children leaving school, please do not arrive before 4 p.m. Distribution will begin at 5 p.m.

Any family that resides in Grundy County and is in need of assistance with food is welcome to come to the mobile food pantry.

MORRIS – The DuPontaris Council of the Knights of Columbus will hold a Free Throw Contest for area boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14.

Growing up, I associated maple flavor with the pancake syrup found at the breakfast table.

I now look for any excuse to add the real syrup to a dish, whether simple desserts, such as a salted maple stove-top pudding, or a brine for a basting glaze for slow-smoked turkey or duck.

I’ll even sneak it into salads as the sweet component in a vinaigrette.

And, yes, pancakes aren’t complete without it.

“Maple syrup is a great alternative sweetener. It’s natural,” said Jon Shook, co-owner with Vinny Dotolo of the restaurants Animal and Son of a Gun. Maple has found a way onto the menus of both places.

The smoked steelhead roe with maple cream and pumpernickel bread at Son of a Gun “has a bit of a cult following,” Dotolo said. Unusual sounding, perhaps, if you haven’t yet tried it.

But, Dotolo adds, “it kind of reminds you of bagels and lox.

The smokiness, saltiness and sweetness lends itself to a really nice contrast.”

At Feniger’s Mud Hen Tavern, she’s used maple syrup quite a bit over the years. “Kind of from the Street days,” she said. (Feniger transformed Street, her earlier restaurant, into Mud Hen in 2013.). “You’ve got that Southeast Asian sweet-salty thing going on.”

Maple infuses a number of dishes, including chicken and waffle croquettes served with a spicy maple sauce and smoked pork belly flavored with an espresso-maple brine.

The restaurant even features a cocktail called the Old Maple, which, although it doesn’t contain any actual maple, combines a mixture of rye whiskey, walnut bitters and agave.

“It almost tastes like maple syrup,” Feniger said.

Maple syrup itself is going through a bit of a renaissance.

“Maple syrup has such a distinct flavor,” Shook said. “The generation I grew up in, it was Aunt Jemima.”

2. In a heavy saucepan, whisk together the milk, maple syrup, salt and vanilla bean. Cook over medium-high heat, striring frequently, until the mixture comes to a boil, 5 to 7 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, whisk together the eggs, egg yolks and cornstarch.

4. Whisk one-half cup of the boiling half-and-half into the egg mixture to temper the eggs, then slowly stir the egg mixture into the hot liquid.

Increase the heat to high and cook, whisking constantly (and scraping the sides and bottom of the pan), until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.

5. Immediately remove the pan from heat and pour the mixture over the butter in the strainer.

Strain the custard, then gently

stir until the butter is completely incorporated. This makes about 3 cups custard.

6. Divide the custard between serving cups or ramekins.

Place a sheet of plastic wrap over the surface of each custard to prevent a skin from forming, and set aside until cooled.

Cook the bacon strips over medium heat until the fat is rendered

and the strips are crisp, about 10 minutes.

Drain the bacon on paper towels, reserving 3 tablespoons bacon grease.

2. Remove any wilted outer leaves from the radicchio and slice it lengthwise into eight wedges.

Trim the top off the fennel, halve it lengthwise, then slice it crosswise into half-inch strips, discarding the core.

Core the apples and cut each into 8 wedges.

3. Whisk together the shallots, thyme, rosemary, maple syrup, vinegar, bacon grease and olive oil. Season with one-half teaspoon salt and a grind of black pepper, or to taste. This makes about 1 cup vinaigrette.

4. Brush the apple wedges with a little of the vinaigrette and place them on an oiled grill heated over medium-high heat.

Grill the wedges for about 2 minutes on each side, until slightly softened with defined grill marks.

Remove and reserve in a warm place. Do the same with the fennel and radicchio.

5. Divide the apple, fennel and radicchio among 4 plates. Crumble the blue cheese over the salads, and sprinkle over the bacon.

Drizzle 1 to 2 teaspoons of the remaining vinaigrette over each salad. Serve immediately.

“We knew it would be a battle,” Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. “They killed us on the offensive boards. We did a nice job on their first offensive set, but when they got those rebounds and easy baskets, that was big.

“We knew that they were going to try and take Nicole away. Most teams try that. But

Illini relay ranks high in conference, country STAFF REPORTS ROSEMONT – University of Illinois men’s track and field middle distance runner Joe McAsey, a Minooka Community High School graduate, has been named the Big Ten Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

McAsey becomes the first Illini to be recognized by the Big Ten this season.

This past weekend at the Iowa State Classic, McAsey finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:47.38.

That performance puts McAsey at the top of the Big Ten in the event, as well as seventh in the nation. McAsey’s performance also moved him into second on Illinois’ all-time event list.

McAsey also competed on the Illini 4x400-meter relay that finished second at Iowa State.

The four-person relay finished in a time of 3:08.01, the third-fastest time in the conference and the 13th-best performance in the country. That time also ranks fifth in Illini history.

This marks the second time in his career that McAsey has been honored as the Big Ten’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

McAsey last won the award on Jan. 13, 2014 after winning the 600-meter at the Illini Open.

Lead like Lincoln Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, didn’t just snap his fingers to preserve the Union.

Lincoln, who was born 206 years ago last week, applied effective leadership skills to achieve those objectives.

Along the way, he faced tremendous opposition.

After he was elected in 1860, Southern states fled the Union, formed their own army and seized federal property. Southern sympathizers in the North agitated to further weaken Federal authority.

On land and at sea during the 1861-65 Civil War, Northern military forces were harassed by Southern counterparts and sometimes were defeated.

And yet, Lincoln set big goals, pursued them with vigor, and sustained, through his unflinching leadership, a national effort to achieve them.

What can people in today’s Land of Lincoln, plagued by debt, deficits and dysfunctional government, learn from Honest Abe’s example?

1. Face problems head-on.

Lincoln didn’t run away and hide. He obtained honest assessments of a problem, sought advice and gave orders to deal with it.

Then he moved on to the next one.

2. Make no small plans.

You would think Lincoln would be satisfied with merely vanquishing the rebellion and ending slavery. No. He also signed far-reaching bills that created land-grant universities, the transcontinental railroad (after the war) and the Department of Agriculture.

3. Communicate your vision. Through letters,

speeches and personal meetings, Lincoln eloquently explained his goals and persuaded others to support them.

4. Let everyone play a part. Lincoln brought for-

mer political rivals into his cabinet and, through deft leadership, succeeded in harnessing their skills toward a common objective.

5. Work hard. As president, Lincoln labored from before breakfast until after dinner to deal with the nation’s unprecedented difficulties.

6. Stay close to the people.

For civilians, Lincoln held extended office hours at the White House, where anyone could meet him.

For soldiers, Lincoln traveled to encampments and military hospitals to thank them for their service.

7. Share the credit for success. Lincoln always

credited the soldiers and officers, not himself, for military successes.

8. Try new ideas. Some historians describe Lincoln as a one-man research and development department.

He personally tested new arms and other inventions.

9. Keep a sense of humor.

Lincoln’s was legendary.

10. Be magnanimous.

Lincoln meant it in his second inaugural address when he said, “With malice toward none, with charity for all ...”

Writing a century ago, Springfield poet Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) called for “Lincoln-hearted men” to step forward and tackle the era’s challenges.

Lindsay also wrote, “Would I might rouse the Lincoln in you all!”

Let the “Lincoln” in the leaders of 2015 be “roused” and unleashed on today’s weighty problems.

‘Fair-share’ challenge has to worry unions SPRINGFIELD – Should anyone be compelled to support a political cause they don’t believe in?

That’s the crux of an Illinois legal issue almost certain to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. In the past, the high court has ruled that workers in non-right-to-work states can be forced to pay “fair share” dues to unions as long as none of the money goes toward political purposes.

The money is supposed to be spent on the costs the unions incur representing these people at the bargaining table and administering the contract.

But as Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy pointed out last year, the situation for government workers is different. Just about everything a union does on their behalf is political.

Think about it. Some of the biggest political issues facing state government this year are state worker pensions, employee pay and staffing in state facilities.

All those issues are brought

Some people who work for state government, local school districts and municipalities don’t agree with their unions and don’t believe they should be forced to pay money to groups that may hold a different political position than they do. And yet those workers continue to give money to unions because they want to hang onto their jobs.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Harris v.

Quinn: “... except perhaps in the rarest of circumstances, no person in this country may be compelled to subsidize speech by a third party that he or she does not wish to support.”

The Harris case prompted Gov. Bruce Rauner to issue an executive order this month saying state workers do not have to pay money to unions – unless they want to. Rauner is seeking a declaratory judg-

ment in federal court to affirm that his actions are constitutional.

And that has to frighten union bosses nationwide.

Here’s why.

Ultimately if the U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of Rauner, every government worker in the United States could be off the hook for union dues.

And only those who want to belong, not those forced to pay, would support government unions. And this wouldn’t be just for Illinois state workers. It would be for every city, state, county and school district employee in the United States. That is how it already is in 25 states. It’s a matter of worker freedom.

People should not be forced to give to a group they don’t agree with just to have a job.

At the bridge table, we try not to guess, but sometimes we are forced to take a leap in the dark.

Today’s deal is an example. How should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads the spade king?

The auction was simple and quantitative. South just hoped for the best in spades. If he had opened one club and partner had responded in a suit, South would have had no suitable rebid.

Declarer starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts and four diamonds. He must score a club trick – but should he play low to his jack (hoping East has the queen) or to his king (playing East for the ace)?

To help in the decision, South should duck the first two spade tricks in order to learn about that suit’s split. What should declarer do if he discovers that West either has five spades or started with only four?

When West has five spades, there is no club guess. Declarer must play a club to his king, because if West has the club ace, the contract cannot be made. West would take at least one club and four spades.

Here, though, the spades break 4-3. Now South will have a pure guess in clubs – assuming East does not give the game away by pausing when a club is led from the dummy.

Second hand low is a reliable defensive rule.
