Born: July 25, 1928; in Marinette, WI Died: Feb. 13, 2015; in Morris, IL Lucille H. Hale, age 86, of Morris, passed away Friday morning, February 13, 2015, at her home.

Born July 25, 1928, in Marinette, Wisconsin, Lucille was a daughter of the late Frank Peter and Mary Susan (Roskos) Hass.

She earned her Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Saint Francis in Joliet, and worked as a surgical RN. Lucille retired from Saint Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, where she was proud to have been on the first angioplasty team.

Lucille was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Morris and cherished spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A true nurse at heart, Lucille will be remembered for always caring for others who were in need.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry, whom she married May 22, 1955; two daughters, Cathy (Roger) Haefner of Morris and Susan (Lee) Avren of Naples, Florida; three granddaughters, Shannon Haefner of Michigan, Delaney Haefner of Minooka and Nina Avren of Florida; two great granddaughters, Dakota and Hayley; one sister, Margaret (George) Burby of Wisconsin; three brothers, Donald (Jane) Hass of Michigan, Richard (Joan) Hass of Wisconsin and Francis Hass of Florida; and one brother-in-law Phillip

(Marlene) Hale of Indiana; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Hass; and sister, Mary (Ben) Konyn.

Green cremation rites are being accorded. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 20, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 600 East Jackson Street in Morris from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral services 10:00 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Ed Howe, CR officiating. Inurnment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Morris.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Lucille’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris. Donna Mae (Grussing) Sayers, age 83, of Plainfield, at rest Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice with her family by her side.

Born October 31, 1931 to the late John H. and Lois E. (Marshall) Grussing in DeLand, IL. She was a 1949 graduate of Plainfield High School.

She worked at the box factory in Plainfield, where she met her love, Lowell V. Sayers. They were married March 4, 1951. She also worked at Illinois Bell, the Plainfield Grain Co., and retired from Fleischmann Distilling. She was a volunteer for many years at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet. She was a beloved Wife, Mom, Sister, Gram, and Nina, a beautiful, strong, loving, generous woman who was at her happiest when surrounded by her family.

Survived by her daughters, Marcia (Michael) Bohrer of Joliet, Jill (Thomas) Harris of Plainfield, and Dana Agnich of Morris. Morris team will present lyrical show

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Laurel Harper joined the Morris Community High School Color Guard as a freshman, she had no idea she’d compete with the winter guard team and make friends she hopes will last a lifetime.

“I’ve made a lot of friends,” Harper said. “Working with my role model Mrs. Z [Morris High School teacher and winter guard coach Laura Zomboracz], I’ve gained a lot of confidence and learned to be able to work well with others.”

Senior captain Samantha Kesler started twirling her sophomore year and said many of life’s lessons could be found on the tarp, where the squad practices and performs.

“It takes a lot of discipline,” Kesler said. “You learn when you work hard what you can get out of it.”

Zomboracz formed the team during the 2012-13 school year, but the team didn’t participate in competitions the entire season. Last year, it competed

Coroner’s office to digitize old records

cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Coroner’s Office is doing its part to try and preserve local history. The coroner’s office’s death investigation documents, some dating back to the 1800s, are being digitized

by SBS Group of Indiana. The project is not costing taxpayers any money.

“Quite often every year, people come in doing family trees and genealogy, asking about death records and in the past we have looked them up and try to accommodate,” Coroner John Callahan said. “But we have records back from the 1800s and some have become very brittle over the years.”

In an effort to secure the historical information, Callahan decided to look into companies that specialize in restoration and preservation.

SBS Group is working on scanning and restoring the documents so the coroner’s office can have access to the documents electronically and may, in the future, make the documents available to the

public online. SBS Group has taken the documents and expects to have all the information digitized by mid-April.

“We hope to have it ready for use the first of May,” Callahan said.

There are two reasons a government office should digitize its documents, Jeff Magallanes of SBS Group said: for preservation of records and for easier access.

“It ensures records don’t get lost over time,” he said.

For starters, the coroner’s office will have a designated computer for the public to access such documents, Callahan said.

The public will not have access to investigation or forensic details, but can obtain cause and manners of death.

“At some point in time in the future, we don’t have all the details worked out, but I would like to offer all that online so people don’t have to leave their homes to access the information,” Callahan said.

ers, he said. The project will cost about $9,000.

In recent years, the state has allowed for coroners to set up special funds from money paid to the coroner’s office from attorneys, insurance companies and some families who pay for copies of investigation and autopsy reports.

“We put it into a fund for improvements to the office,” he said.

By using the funds to digitize the documents, it is a service to the public and the office making its reports easier to access for the office, Callahan said. “I thought it was a winwin situation,” he said.

Once the documents are digitized, the office will receive the originals back but will not have to keep them stored on-site. The documents can be moved to a designated location from the county.

County officials are working on storage space for departments and are considering

Whiteout conditions cause I-55 crash Saturday

MORRIS – Gardner Fire Chief Terry Jensen said Monday the multi-vehicle collision Saturday morning on southbound Interstate 55 near Gardner escalated quickly.

The accident, which is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police, occurred near mile post 227 on I-55 south, according to state police. Emergency responders from multiple area municipalities were called to assist at the scene. He said when responding to a call of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries at 10:08 a.m. he wasn’t prepared for what he was about to see.

“We were going northbound to turn around and we saw there were 10 to 12 cars involved in the accident,” Jensen said. “As soon as we passed the scene we watched five other cars going full force crash into the pile up.”

A minivan and a semitrailer sit on the shoulder of southbound I-55 just north of exit 227 in Gardner after a multi-vehicle collision Saturday involving between 17 and 22 vehicles. were able to get in the middle of the southbound lanes with their lights on to stop traffic from adding to the collisions.

Responders quickly called an EMS box alarm that eventually escalated to a 5-11 alarm, which called in ambulances from as far away as East Joliet to the north and Pontiac to the south. The accident was caused by whiteout conditions, which also hampered the ability of responders to quickly assess the situation as

they weren’t able to see from one end of the scene to the other end.

“Weather was a huge deterrent,” Jensen said. “When we first started we couldn’t see anything.”

He said the first thing he saw when he pulled up was two SUV’s that were tangled with barrier cables and guardrails. He couldn’t imagine how they got there.

“People were needing and yelling for help,” Jensen said.

Officials said somewhere between 17 and 22 cars were involved in the collision with 12 people being taken to area hospitals. Illinois State Police District 5 said Monday the interstate was shut down for four hours while emergency crews worked to clean up.

Jensen said vehicles were all over the road and in the ditches. A Fed Ex truck had hit a van already in the ditch, which required about a 10-minute extrication.

Jensen said the person extricated from the van had injuries considered life-threatening and was taken from the scene first by Braidwood Fire Department and taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

According to Illinois State Police Trooper Matt Wierzbinski on Saturday, another person was taken to Saint Joseph with serious injuries. Both were later taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood.

Local D.A.R. chapter awards essay winners MORRIS – The words “past” and “future” hold different meanings for different people, with age playing a big part in how they are respectively defined.

Recently a group of local high school students were asked the question, “What does our past tell us about our future?”

The question was part of the annual Good Citizens Essay Contest sponsored by the Alida C. Bliss Morris Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution, according to a news release from the D.A.R. chapter.

receives on how his creations look and taste. He gets that feedback through the daily taste testing done in the Nutrition Services department and through messages received from patients.

“Sometimes, patients will write a note on their ticket or napkin, or they will ask the hostess to tell the cook their food was good,” Thackrey said. “That makes you feel good inside.”

What is Rauner’s end game with Illinois unions?

More than a few Statehouse types have been wondering aloud for weeks what Gov. Bruce Rauner is up to with his almost daily attacks on organized labor. Just what, they ask, is the end game here?

His people say that the governor feels “liberated” since the election to speak his mind about a topic which stirs great personal passion in him. He played up the issue during the Republican primary, then all but ran away from it in the general election, including just a few weeks before Election Day when he flatly denied that “right to work” or anything like that would be among his top priorities.

Yet, there he is, day after day, pounding away at unions, demanding right to work laws, vilifying public employee unions as corrupt to the point of issuing an executive order barring the distribution of state-deducted employee “fair share” dues to public worker unions like AFSCME. The dues are paid by people who don’t want to pay full union dues.

AMENDMENT

VIEWS Rich Miller Some top Democrats believe that Rauner may be setting them up for a grand bargain this spring. Democratic lawmakers most certainly are going to freak out when Rauner presents his draconian budget. Rank and file members will undoubtedly demand some sort of tax hike to prevent draconian cuts to their cherished programs.

Rauner could eventually say that he’d agree to additional revenues in exchange for passage of his economic package.

But some top Republicans who have regular contact with the governor say they haven’t yet discerned a rhyme or a reason. “I just don’t see an end game here at all with them,” confided one GOP operative. Another concurred, saying if there is an end game, it hasn’t been shared with

anyone else.

For their part, the Democratic House Speaker and Senate President have gently asked the governor to focus his considerable energy on attacking the state’s massive budget deficit, rather than spend his time attacking labor. The governor will need all the cooperation he can get to fix that budget problem and he’s making more enemies than friends right now.

Even if Rauner manages to muscle all 20 Senate Republicans onto a bill, that doesn’t mean the majority party will allow it to be called for a vote.

And the more Rauner attempts to undermine their traditional supporters in organized labor, the less they may be willing to go along with him on other things. And the Democrats aren’t his only problem.

Rauner met with members of the Senate Republican Caucus in a Springfield restaurant earlier this month and delivered a stern warning. Rauner started by reportedly referencing the $20 million sitting in his campaign

account and said he wanted to be their partner in the upcoming session and would support those who supported him.

But then the hammer came down.

Sources say the governor told the Republicans that he would ask for their votes on 10 issues and he needed them all to vote “Yes” on all 10. Not five, not seven. Ten. And if anyone in the room didn’t vote for all 10, then they’d have a “[expletive] problem” with him.

Rauner’s executive order about fair share dues was declared illegal by the attorney general last week. He reworked it to keep it on track, but it’s still not legal, according to the state’s highest-ranking lawyer.

In politics, it’s always unwise to threaten somebody with an unloaded pistol. Then again, $20 million can buy a lot of bullets, whatever the objective may be.

dgoss@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Joliet West girls are returning to the bowling state Tournament.

And it’s all because, when the chips were down, each of the Tigers did her job.

West rolled a 953 in Game 6 on Saturday to hold off Morris’ comeback bid at the Plainfield Central Sectional and retain the fourth and final qualifying spot for this weekend’s state finals at Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

Morris had games of 946 and 982 in the afternoon to climb back within 38 pins of the Tigers with one game remaining.

The Redskins would have been even closer had West junior Gracie Plese not delivered a 257 in Game 5.

Plese then rolled 207 in Game 6, followed by teammates Taylor Bailey at 192, Melissa March 188, Sarah Heffron 186 and Kayla Kurowski 180. That was good enough to beat Morris, which shot 927 in Game 6, by 64 pins for the final spot.

“This is amazing,” said Plese, a regular in the West lineup a year ago, when the Tigers finished 10th in the state.

“I never really doubted that we would do it, but we had to play a little catch-up. We’ve been kind of a ladder team. We start

at the bottom sometimes and climb our way up.”

Oswego East was the sectional champion with a 6,088 total, followed by Waubonsie Valley at 5,844, West Aurora at 5,744 and Joliet West at 5,704.

Morris finished at 5,640. Oswego (5,618) and East Moline (5,610) were right behind the Redskins in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Minooka was 10th at 5,455 in the 12-team field.

Taylor Warwick led Morris with a 1,190 total, including a 269 in Game 5 that helped the Redskins apply pressure to West.

Other Morris scores were Jessica Winter 1,156, Jordan Tiritilli 1,143, Madison Colasanti 1,078 and Amy Waldron 1,073.

“We had a good afternoon, but we did not bowl well this morning,” Morris coach Harry Banks said. “We bowled well the last two or three weeks and good this afternoon, which is what you want. If we had bowled better this morning, we would have gotten out. But this is a tough sectional. There were lots of good teams.”

Minooka came in hoping to advance to state for a sixth straight year but had an off day.

WILMINGTON – The Coal City wrestlers presented abundant smiles Saturday as they posed for team pictures after the Class 1A Wilmington Sectional.

Coal City had four champions among the six who will advance to the state tournament.

Joey Rivera (39-4) got Coal City rolling when he pinned IC Catholics’s Joe Bianchini in 51 seconds to win at 106 pounds.

“I ended up getting him in a cradle and just finished it from there,’’ Rivera said. “I know we’re all going to have hard matches in the finals, so you’ve got to get the team off to a good start and get some momentum.’’

Coal City’s Cody Minnick (44-1), the defending state champ at 113, had a 22-6 lead in the 120 final when he earned a technical fall in 5:43.

“Just went out there determined to put a bunch of points on the board,’’ Minnick said.

“I came out the beginning of the season knowing I’d have a target on my back. Everybody knew who I was. Just had to train harder than I ever did.’’

Minnick iced his bruised right wrist after the bout but said he wasn’t worried about the injury.

Coal City’s Corey Jurzak (40-1), a two-time state runner-up, claimed the 132 title by technical fall in 3:59 over Wilmington’s Colin Weis, who was trailing 18-1.

“This is my third time wrestling him this season,’’ Jurzak said. “I kind of know what his offense is and his defense.’’

Riley Kauzlaric (37-5) gave Coal City its fourth sectional champion with a 1:29 pin of Bowen’s Maurice Paino in the 182 final.

“Joey, Cody and Corey and me, we expected big things this season, and we’re producing,’’ Kauzlaric said.

It is reasonable for South to open four spades in the third (or fourth) position. Opposite a passed partner, a slam is unlikely, and the bid rates to keep the opponents quiet. (One point for serious partnerships: If you open four of a major with such a strong hand and the opponents enter the auction, you must double to tell partner about your unexpectedly high point-count.)

South has four potential losers: two hearts, one diamond and one club.

Urgent care centers are for non-emergencies Dear Doctor K: What are urgent care centers? Are they the same as emergency rooms?

Dear Reader: They definitely are not the same. Emergency rooms are for true emergencies – even though many people go to emergency rooms for quite minor problems. Typically, emergency rooms are attached to hospitals, because patients with true emergencies usually need to be hospitalized after their treatment in the emergency room.

In contrast, urgent care centers are for medical problems that benefit from prompt attention but are not life-threatening.

as colds, the flu, earaches, sore throats, migraines, low-grade fevers and rashes. They’re also for minor injuries, such as sprains, back pain, minor cuts and burns.

How do you decide where to go for an urgent medical problem?

If you have a primary care doctor, the first thing to do is contact him or her – unless you’re convinced it’s a life-threatening emergency. If you don’t have a primary care doctor, then you’ve got a decision to make.

Suppose a loved one burned his hand, is clutching his chest or has a high fever. When

deciding between an emergency room and an urgent care center, consider this general rule: If a person could die or be permanently disabled, go to an emergency room. If the problem does not seem life-threatening and does not risk disability, go to an urgent care clinic.

How do you know if your symptom (or that of a family member) could cause a person to “die or be permanently disabled”? The following situations require emergency treatment in adults: • Severe chest pain or pressure; • Pain in the chest that travels to the arm or jaw, even if not severe; • Unusually bad headache, especially if it started suddenly; • Suddenly not being able to speak, see, walk or move; • Sudden weakness or droop-

ing on one side of the body; • Choking; • Head injury followed by passing out, fainting or confusion; • Injury to neck or spine, especially with loss of feeling or difficulty moving; • Electric shock or lightning strike; • Severe burn; • Seizure; • Trouble breathing; • Passing out, fainting; • Inhaled smoke or poisonous fumes; • Sudden confusion; • Heavy bleeding; • Possible broken bone, loss of movement; • Deep wound; • Coughing or throwing up blood; • New, severe pain anywhere in the body; • Severe allergic reaction

with trouble breathing, swelling, hives; • High fever with headache and stiff neck; • High fever that doesn’t get better with medicine; • Throwing up, or having loose stools, repeatedly; • Poisoning or overdose of drug or alcohol; • Suicidal thoughts.

When you go to an emergency room for minor problems, it’s likely you’ll wait many hours to be seen, and your insurance may not cover a chunk of the very large bill. Granted, you can’t always know in advance what a true emergency is. But I hope the situations I described above will help you decide.
