CASEY C. HEERMANN Born: July 18, 1971 Died: Feb. 7, 2015

Casey Christopher Heermann, age 43, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center from complications of a stroke.

Born July 18, 1971, in Joliet to Charlene (Joneson) and Daniel Heermann. He was educated in the Coal City School System, was a graduate of Joliet Junior College and was currently attending Governors State University.

Casey worked in sales at Best Buy and Verizon, and was currently employed at Cooler Smart. He was a lifetime member of the Juggy Gales Supper Club and Fantasy Football League and a Master of Useless Trivia. His second love after his family was the Arizona Cardinals football team. Casey will be remembered as “an all around nice guy” and a kid at heart.

Survived by his fiancee, Kathy McGowan of Joliet; his daughter, Kayla Hultink of Calumet City; his sons, Zachary Heermann of Crest Hill, and Gavin and Kevin McGowan, at home; his mother, Charlene (Tom) Connolly of Norway, IL; brother, Page Heermann of Plainfield; niece, Alison (Brent) Leiterman; aunts, Carol (Dan) Green of Aurora, Cindy (Paul) Hintze of Diamond, and Pam Joneson of Morris; cousins, Mark (Kim) Pavlis, Jill Pavlis and Josh (Marti) Hintze; his future in-laws, Dan and Ann McGowan; future brother-inlaw, Mike (Katie) McGowan and Elizabeth; and numerous extended family members and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Willingham of Corsicana, Texas; three grandchildren, Jared, Stanley and Brianna Willingham; one brother, Timothy Peterson of Arkansas; special cousins, Loren Peterson of Aurora and Jon and Rick Stinson both of Michigan; one niece and one nephew.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

He was a member of the Plattville Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be given to Joliet Area Community Hospice.

He enjoyed doing yard work, gardening, going to local taverns with his father and spending time with his friends and family.

Steven K. Peterson, 52, of Minooka, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 7, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Plattville Lutheran Church with Rev. Bret L. Reedy officiating. Inurnment will follow in Plattville Lutheran Cemetery.

Tom Wise, age 68, of Gardner, passed away Sunday evening February 9, 2015, at Manor Care in Hinsdale.

Born August 8, 1946, in Streator, Tom was a son of the late Glenn and Rosalie (Crandall) Wise. He was raised in Gardner and graduated from Gardner South Wilmington High School with the Class of 1965.

Tom has been affiliated with the Ford Dealership in Gardner his entire life, owning and operating Tom Wise Ford until 1988. He retired from Rub Ford in 2012. Tom was a member of the Gardner Fire Department, served as a former trustee with the Church of Hope and was active with the Gardner

Beautification Committee and the Route 66 Corridor Committee. Tom served as a Gardner Commissioner for several years and was currently the Mayor of the Village of Gardner, since being elected in 1999.

He enjoyed antique Ford cars and trucks and was a great Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include three children, Lori (Brad) Patten and Scott (Melanie) Wise, both of Gardner and Tony (Kristen) Wise of Herscher; five grandchildren, Austin, Madelyn, Michael, Nathan and Noah, with another expected; one sister, Carol McElroy of Lakeland, Florida; his father-in-law, Bill Hollmeyer of Dwight; brother-in-law, John (Renee) Hollmeyer of Gardner; and sister-in-law, Ruth (Frank) Lardi of South Wilmington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane (nee Hollmeyer) on December 17, 1987; grandson, Daniel; and mother-inlaw, Theresa Hollmeyer.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 12, 2015, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty Street in Gardner.

Funeral services will follow Friday morning, February 13th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Jan Chandler from Church of Hope officiating. Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Tom will be laid to rest with his late wife Mary Jane.

Pallbearers will be: Dean Christensen, Jim Bozue, Ray Rub, Mike Serena, Dean Rankovich and John Corneglio.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Tom’s memory to his family for distribution to various local charities of their choosing.

Parker Farrero was honorary coach Saturday

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Like all sports teams, the Joliet Jaguars and Rockford Hockey Club can be fierce rivals on the ice.

But Saturday, in between the game the two PeeWee-level teams played at Inwood Ice Rink in Joliet, the hockey players joined forces to show caring, compassion and support for Parker Farrero, the game’s honorary coach and captain that day.

Parker is a second-grader at Gardner Grade School who loves hockey. He suffers from Batten disease, a neurological disease where cells are thrown out of balance with the build-up of proteins and lipids (fats), according to the Batten Disease Research and Support Association.

Because the cells become damaged, people with Batten begin to experience progressive neurological impairment, including seizures, visual impairment/blindness, personality and behavior changes, dementia, loss of motor skills and the ability to walk, talk and communicate.

The stadium in Joliet was decorated Saturday with signs supporting Parker Farrero of Gardner. Parker was an honorary coach at the game, where the teams supported him and his fight against Batten disease. was declining vision, said his mother, Theresa Farrero. At first, he was diagnosed with a retinal disease. It took another 1½ years and multiple doctors to discover what was wrong.

“For some kids it takes years before they find somebody who can diagnose this,” Theresa said.

Parker is nearly blind and has begun experiencing some of the personality changes that make it difficult to handle many situations.

But Saturday, he braved the crowds and the constant noise of the hockey rink to be honorary captain and coach for the Jaguars Team PeeWee Shugle.

He was given a Jaguar No. 5 jersey, a VIP pass so he could

go on the Jaguars’ bench, and multiple tokens of support from the PeeWee team and the Jaguar Hockey Club.

Jaguar players wrapped their sticks in red tape, Parker’s favorite color, said Jaguars PeeWee I team manager Kim Parr. They had helmet stickers made for both teams with the slogan “Battling Battens For Parker.”

“The kids are really excited about this,” Parr said. “They are honored to have him come and be their captain.”

It all started when Quinn Walsh, one of Parker’s helpers at Gardner, wanted to have Parker over to play. Quinn’s

mom, Lauren Walsh, is the secretary of the Jaguar PeeWee I team, and the two came up with the idea of inviting Parker to one of the games.

“Then it just snowballed,” Lauren Walsh said. “Parker is such a sweetie.”

Hearing about the events planned for Parker, the Rockford Hockey Club also wanted to take part. The club brought Parker a team jersey and other gifts to give him after the game, Rockford team manager Kevin Wald said. Gifts included tickets to the Rockford Ice Hogs game, signed pictures of Blackhawks players Marian Hossa and Corey Crawford, and gear from both pro teams.

After the Zamboni cleared the ice, Parker was escorted

by Lauren and Quinn Walsh to where the Jaguars would enter the rink to begin their warmups. As the players came down the ramp in full gear, everyone fist-bumped Parker.

He then was taken to the team’s bench, where coaches Ryan Schuman and Russ Slagle explained the warm-up drills to the honorary captain.

Parker still has some sight, and he wears super-powered goggles that help him identify his surroundings.

With warm-ups done and the clock set to begin the first period, Parker was escorted along a red carpet onto the ice, where he got to drop the

ceremonial first puck of the game. The crowd clapped and cheered. Whenever the Jaguars scored, they found Parker in the stadium, skated up to him, and taped their sticks on the barrier so he could take part in the celebration.

Jaguar families from all team levels came out to meet and support Parker. The stadium was decorated with signs and streamers, and half the proceeds from the chuck-apuck contest went to the Farrero family.

Parker was a bit overwhelmed with it all – the vibrating music in the background between plays, the cheering of the crowds in the stands, even the typical smell of the hockey rink.

When asked if he was having a good time, he managed a big nod of his head and a resounding “yes.” Then with quiet reserve, he added, “That’s all I have to say at the moment.”

Prom Style Show a family tradition for many Morris school show benefited county program

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Sunday’s Family Career and Community Leader of America Prom Style Show was a mixture of stand-up comedy, skits and song and dance, but the highlight was the final act, with 30 of the club’s members modeling the latest in prom dresses and tuxedos.

The gowns were all long and dazzling, many with sequins.

FCCLA sophomores Sophie and Lily Tibbott said one of the trends this year is two-piece dresses, with a midriff cut.

The two had trouble deciding on their favorite dress, but Lily said she thought hers was the navy gown modeled by Katherine Gallick. Sophie said her favorite probably was the light blue gown worn by Leah Lines.

“I think it was really good,” Sophie said of the show.

The FCCLA Prom Style Show is an annual fundraising event designed to have fun with fashion and prom while raising money for a good cause. This year, the money raised from donations given at the door will go to the Grundy County Prom N’ Aid. About $275 was raised for the organization, FCCLA sponsor and Foods and Consumer Sciences teacher Zan Higgins said Monday.

The show was led by Masters of Ceremonies Arielle Robinson and Austin Allbert, who interspersed introductions with jokes. The two later came on for a piano and vocal rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Most of the models were FCCLA seniors, and they came out on the stage two at a time. Each couple began with a pose in their prom finest, then walked farther out on stage and performed a couple of signature moves, including dances and gymnastics.

Most of the dresses were spring colors, either silky fitted gowns or ones with gossamer taffeta. There were pearls and polka dots, lace and cutouts, and high-heeled shoes. The guys’ tuxedos were handsome and well-fitted and, in some cases, transforming.

Libby Wright, 10, came with her grandmother, Ann Wright of Morris, to see the beautiful gowns. It’s become an annual tradition for the two of them to see the show.

“I came to see all the dresses,” Libby said. “My favorite ones were the blue one that Leah Lines wore and the pink one that Monica Davy was wearing.”

“We come every year,” her grandmother said. “We see princesses on TV all the time, and now we get to see princesses here.”

Traci Post and Jennifer Feiden attended to see their sons – Tyler and Matt.

“It was very entertaining,” Feiden said. “This group of boys here are the most confident I’ve ever seen. They were working it.”

Model Taya Torkelson said the students arrived at noon, practicing all afternoon for the 5 p.m. performance. A cosmetology students came to style their hair, she added. She said she loved the dress she modeled.

“I love the feel of it,” Torkelson said.

Higgins described the show as “fantastic.”

“It was fun all afternoon,” she said, “and it’s fun now.”

Gardner mayor had ‘Gardner in his heart’ Tom Wise died Sunday

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Gardner Mayor Tom Wise lived to help others and loved the village of Gardner that he called home, according to his family and friends.

Wise, 68, died Sunday evening at ManorCare Health Services in Hinsdale after enduring an ongoing illness.

“He just loved the town,” Tom Wise his son, Scott Wise, said Monday. “He wanted whatever was best for the town.”

Wise followed in his father Glenn Wise’s footsteps, with both having served as mayor of the village.

Wise was first elected as a commissioner in 1995, and then as mayor in 1999. He was born and raised in Gardner, and was a graduate of Gardner-South Wilmington High School in 1965.

Wise owned and operated Tom Wise Ford in Gardner until 1988 and then worked at Rub Ford until 2012 when he retired.

Commissioner Dick Hileman said Wise always supported the local businesses in

Gardner and shopped locally to help those in business there.

“Tom Wise was born in Gardner and had Gardner in his heart,” Hileman said. “He’s going to be hard to replace.”

Wise was a member of the Gardner Volunteer Fire Department, served as a former trustee with the Church of Hope and was active with the Gardner Beautification Committee and the Route 66 Corridor Committee.

Commissioner Mike Serena said it was a sad day for Gardner and was shocked to hear of Wise’s passing.

“I saw him a few weeks ago and he looked really good,” Serena said. “This was a shock.”

Wise raised his three children Lori Patten, Scott Wise and Tony Wise in Gardner.

Scott Wise said he can’t put into words the kind of man and dad his father was.

“He was just a great dad, he’d do anything for anybody,” Scott Wise said. “He was a great and kind guy.”

Hileman has been acting mayor since October when Wise was hospitalized.

Hileman said he has called the village office and told staff to close the office for Wise’s wake and to fly the flag at halfstaff. The wake is scheduled for 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty St. in Gardner. Funeral services will follow Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. POINT, N.C. – The Marines’ investigation into Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock’s death has been determined as accidental.

According to a news release from the United States Marines, “the Marine’s death was likely the result of an accidental fall from the aircraft.”

Hancock, who was of Coal City, died May 19 after falling from an MV-22B Osprey during Steven a training exHancock ercise in North Carolina. He was laid to rest May 30 in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Hancock, a member of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 and a crew chief on the plane, fell from the open back of the MV-22B during a routine training flight about 45 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, according to the news release.

There were no witnesses to the fall, but the investigation found no evidence to indicate it was anything other than an accident.

Hancock’s family declined to comment Monday.

Mike Barton, Public Affairs director with the United States Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, said the Osprey can carry 24 combat troops along with three crew members, but on the day of the accident there were four crew members on board.

“There was another crew chief on board the aircraft who went forward to talk to the pilots,” Barton said Monday afternoon.

Without a witness, it is impossible to know how Hancock fell, according to the news release.

However, when he was last seen in the back of the aircraft, Hancock was strapped in with a gunner’s belt, which was attached to the inside of the aircraft with a safety tether.

The gunner’s belt is not a seat belt – it is a belt that is

attached to a safety tether designed to allow free movement within the aircraft while aircrew performs duties. Crew members are required to wear the belt and tether while working in the back of the aircraft.

Although the investigation did not reveal exactly how Hancock came out of his belt, it was determined he had secured the belt properly, and that it did not come open.

Barton said the investigation suggests Hancock must have been unconscious and in a relaxed state when he slipped out of the belt while outside of the airplane. The belt and tether were dangling out of the opened back hatch, he said.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts and support are focused on Lance Corporal Hancock’s family and friends,” Lt. Col. Staff survey: D-54 climate has improved

vshanker@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Recent survey results suggest the overall work climate of Morris Elementary School District 54 has improved, officials said.

According to the results of the Climate and Culture Survey, 92 percent of staff agree or strongly agree they are proud to work for the district; 85 percent believe the district is an inviting place to work; 93 percent believe the district promotes trust among staff; and 94 percent agree the schools promote relationships between colleagues.

“We have a remarkable culture,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said.

The Climate and Culture Survey is an annual measure-

ment tool used by the School Board to identify key areas of weakness for the district.

According to survey results, every perception area showed improvements compared to last year.

Those areas include student development, curriculum, communication and community, staff, development, the district’s vision, the Board of Education and superintendent.

It contrasts to three years ago, when residents complained about Shaw’s leadership, blaming her for declining morale and questioning her transition from board president to superintendent five years ago.

That transition included the district paying some of the tuition for Shaw’s education

Judge denies judicial review for Gardner fire district election Todd Perkins to stay on ballot

cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – A judge has denied the judicial review of a Grundy County Electoral Board decision, leaving Todd Perkins on the April 7 ballot for Gardner Fire Protection District trustee.

Judge Lance Peterson denied the judicial review in court Monday morning, according to judici.com.

“I’m happy with the decision,” Perkins said Monday afternoon. “It would be nice if this was it. It would be nice if we could just get to the election instead of playing politics.”

Candidate Barb Baker appealed the Grundy County Electoral Board’s decision, which came out in favor of her opponent Perkins last month.

“The petitioner may take this case to the appellate court in Ottawa,” Scott Pyles of Rathbun, Scervenyak & Kozol, LLC in Joliet, said of his client, Baker, on Monday afternoon.

Baker, running for the sixyear term, originally filed objections to petitions filed

by Perkins and Michael Pasternak. Both were running for the six-year term. The Electoral Board voted to allow Perkins on the ballot, but ruled in favor of Baker regarding Pasternak’s objection.

In Baker’s objection against Perkins, she claimed he did not securely fasten his petitions as mandated in election code.

The Electoral Board ruled Perkins’ petitions were fastened securely and his name would appear on the April 7 ballot.

The judge denied the petition for judicial review Monday. Baker could take the case to the Third District Appellate Court, but in the meantime Perkins will be on the ballot.

“We revamp the survey every year,” Shaw said, adding that a Climate and Culture Committee works on changing the survey every year.

“When an area is in the 90s, that’s probably not an area of concern. So we look to develop new questions to identify our strengths and weaknesses.”

White Oak Elementary first-grade teacher Kelly Martin took the survey and thought the positive responses were due to the clarity of the questions compared to previous surveys.

“They think it’s a team effort,” Martin said. “The board, superintendent, administration and the teachers worked as a team to do their jobs.”

All but one question received 50 percent or more satisfaction; 56.63 percent of respondents disagreed that the facilities and property are

clean and well-maintained.

Shaw said any areas seen as weaknesses will be addressed by the board.

Shaw said staff communication of student discipline wasn’t satisfactory in last year’s results, so new staff was hired to oversee discipline.

The survey took place Jan. 5 during a dedicated Teachers Institute Day for the district, gathering 85 respondents’ answers and shipping them to an educational consultant at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

JOLIET – Dr. Nafisa Burhani, with Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates in Joliet and Morris, said doctors have known about cancer genes for some time, but many of the clinical implications just now are being seen.

Burhani said our bodies have the ability to repair DNA when it is damaged, but sometimes mutations arise that impair that process, resulting in cancer. Testing is available for inherited genetic mutations in such cancers as breast, ovarian and colon.

“These are powerful tests,” Burhani said. “We can prevent cancer in some of these people who test positive.”

This knowledge of genetics is helping to lead to new cancer treatments. For instance, in December 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new treatment for certain types of ovarian cancer. Olaparib, which will be marketed as Lynparza, may cause cancer cells to die because it interferes with their ability to repair DNA. However, Olaparib is only

for women who test positive for the BRCA gene mutation and who have undergone three lines of chemotherapy, said Ron Rogers, executive vice president of corporate communications for Myriad Genetics Inc., based in Utah.

The FDA also approved a blood test called BRACAnalysis CDx, which finds BRCA gene mutations in potentially eligible patients, taking genetic testing to a new level, Rogers said.

“When you do genetic testing on women and learn information on the tumor,” Rogers said, “then you can target the best drugs for treating that tumor.”

Genetic testing also can tell people if they are more likely to develop a condition, said Kisha Johnson-Isidore, a geneticist with Myriad Genetic Laboratory, who works with Burhani regarding conditions based on gene mutations.

Johnson-Isidore believes that is useful information to have.

“The point of genetic testing,” Johnson-Isidore said, “is that you can do something differently to decrease the risk of developing it or to manage it

Alive because of testing

Heather Meyer, of rural Marseilles, believes getting tested for the breast cancer gene saved her life. Meyer’s mother died from ovarian cancer and then her sister Jodi – after being diagnosed with breast cancer – urged Meyer and several family members to undergo the testing.

Jodi died within a year of her diagnosis, but Meyer took her sister’s advice and learned she was positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation, Meyer said.

According to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer. org, BRCA are genes everyone has that naturally suppress tumors. When one mutates, cancer is more likely to develop. There are hundreds of different BRCA mutations. Some raise the risk for breast, ovarian, pancreatic or stomach cancers.

Meyer decided to have a complete hysterectomy before cancer could develop. She and her husband previously decided not to have children.

Soon afterward, Meyer consulted with her surgeon about having a double mastectomy.

During that appointment, the doctor found a lump in Mey-

er’s breast.

“It was about a week after my mother had died,” Meyer said. “It had already gone into one of my sentinel lymph nodes. This was an extremely aggressive type of cancer.”

It also was the same type her sister had. At the time of her sister’s diagnosis, the cancer had spread to 15 of her nodes, as well as her spine.

Meyer had a double mastectomy and eight rounds of chemotherapy in November 2008.

Today, Meyer said, her health is good.

Rough waters ahead I don’t believe I ever have seen a governor openly and loudly laughed at on the House floor. At least not while he was present. Gov. Bruce Rauner was doing well with his legislative audience during his first State of the State address, delivering strong applause lines with his refreshing calls for bipartisanship. He even thanked legislators “for your service” and predicted they would do “great” things together.

Members of the Legislative Black Caucus were receptive to the governor’s attacks on labor union apprenticeship programs. Rauner claimed about “80 percent of individuals in Illinois apprenticeship programs are white even though Caucasians make up fewer than 63 percent of our population,” and he demanded that be addressed with legislation. Black and Latino legislators have tried for years with limited success to break those barriers, and no governor ever has sided so clearly with them.

Legislators applauded when the governor proposed raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour. But when Rauner added “over seven years,” their laughter was louder.

Much of Rauner’s address was aimed at his campaign enemies. Public employee unions were at the top of his list. “Government must never force its employees to fund activities they do not support,” Rauner claimed.

But, by law, state workers are not required to pay full union dues. They automatically are enrolled into what’s called “Fair Share,” which is the portion of dues that funds things such as collective bargaining, grievances, etc. They can opt in to full dues, which includes funding for things such as political work.

The Illinois Hospital Association backed Gov. Pat Quinn last year, and Raun-

VIEWS Rich Miller er took a clear shot at the IHA last week. “While we currently ban contributions from many businesses with state contracts,” the governor said, “some of the largest recipients of taxpayer money, like hospitals that receive millions from Medicaid, are still able to funnel huge campaign donations to elected officials.” He then called for a campaign contribution ban from “organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds.”

But hospitals don’t fund the IHA’s political activities, mainly because most are notfor-profits and are banned by law from contributing. Pretty much all of the group’s political contributions come from hospital executives.

There are those – myself included – who believe there may be a method to Rauner’s madness. Under this theory, the governor has planted his flag on a distant economic fringe so he eventually can drag the General Assembly off its current path. And if he eventually is willing to compromise and tone things down, it just might work.

But it would’ve been much better for Rauner if he was booed last week. Being booed by the “entrenched elite” would’ve been a net positive for him with the general public. And legislators might’ve felt bad about booing him once they had time to reflect.

When people are laughing at you, they don’t care what you think, and they’re definitely not listening. Some rough waters are dead ahead.

Although the Redskins may be disappointed by the finish, Warwick said the day’s positives vastly outweigh the heartbreak. Unranked Morris built a 116-pin lead on mighty West by the end of the first game and continued to lead the field at the end of each of the first five games.

the top five individually. In addition to Warwick, whose 1,154 was good for second place, fellow seniors Jordan Tiritilli, who was fourth with an 1,138, and Jessica Winter, who was fifth with a 1,136, carried the load. Junior Madison Colasanti was 18th with a 1,018, and sophomore Amy Waldron was 32nd with an 835 in five games.

“I think it’s the strongest day that we’ve had together as a team, just trying to fight through,” Tiritilli said. “We definitely showed them that

we’re a force to be reckoned with today. … When you start to focus on other teams, you don’t really do your best ’cause you’re too busy focusing on them. I feel like today really brought us together as a team and we said, ‘We want this for us.’ ” Warwick said the regional was a first for her career – before then, her Morris teams had never finished ahead of Minooka at any event.

Morris boys get win at downstate O’Fallon Shootout STAFF REPORTS O’FALLON – Taking a break from its regular schedule, the Morris boys basketball team took part in the Bank of O’Fallon Shootout on Saturday. The Redskins took on Columbia, a Class 3A school in the Cahokia Conference which has a win this season against top-ranked 2A Nashville, and came away with a 52-47 victory.

Morris trailed 8-5 after a sluggish first quarter.

“One team looked like they had played a tough road conference game the night before [Columbia lost at Breese Central],” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “The other looked

like they ate too many wings at Buffalo Wild Wings and stayed up late in hotel rooms playing XBox. We will eat salads, I guess, if we are ever invited back.”

Columbia led 18-8 midway throughout the second quarter before the Redskins ended the half on a 8-0 run.

“The game was close to getting away from us,” Blumberg said. “With their personnel, had the lead been stretched to 15 instead of cut to two, we would have been in big trouble.

Our guards pressured on the perimeter and forced Columbia into some turnovers. Defensively, Evan [Bjelland] had a big five-second closely guard-

ed turnover that sparked us.”

Morris scored the first five points of the second half to take its first lead at 21-18.

The teams traded baskets and leads throughout the third quarter. Morris took a 39-36 lead with 4:45 remaining in the game and never relinquished it.

Bjelland led the Redskins with 23 points and seven assists. Austin Patterson scored 17, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc. Bjelland was named the game MVP. “We struggled to execute offensively in the first half,” Blumberg said. “Columbia’s defensive intensity was a big part of it. But we seemed

to have a bit of an exhibition game mentality, trying to make the pretty pass or great play and put on a show. We settled down in the second half, moved the ball better, and cut down on turnovers.

“Within a span of 48 hours, we were able to knock off a rival on the road [Yorkvile] and get a win against a quality southern Illinois team, playing out of our normal routine.

I’m proud of the way our guys carried themselves on the road – treating it like a business trip with a specific goal. I feel honored that we were even invited to participate. To play in the same event as state-ranked teams such as Westchester St.

Joe’s, Belleville Althoff, and Normal Community, and nationally-ranked Chaminade is special.

“I would like to publicly thank coach [Rick] Gibson and assistant athletic director Cory Patton at O’Fallon, as well as the entire shootout staff for giving us the opportunity to play and for running a firstclass event. If it’s not already, it’ll be the premier shootout in the state of Illinois, and I guess we can say we won the first game in its history.”

Morris (16-7) doesn’t play again until Feb. 17 at home.

The game orginally was scheduled to be at Ottawa, but it will be played in Morris, instead.

STREATOR – Minooka and Morris girls bowling finished first and second, respectively, atop an 11-team field at the Joliet West Regional in 2014.

When the same 11 teams convened at Bowl Mor Lanes for the 2015 Streator Regional on Saturday, the local teams again appeared headed for a 1-2 finish for much of the day.

Through four games, Morris led the field, and with a 39-pin deficit, Minooka was the only team within 100 pins of the Redskins.

It was then that a Joliet West team that is ranked second in the state by illinoisbowling.net made its move.

West overtook Minooka by the end of Game 5 and bowled a 964 to Morris’ 885 in the sixth game to win 5,439-5,405 over the Redskins. Behind individual champion Kortney Sickler, Minooka finished third with a 5,339. All three teams will advance to the sectional round.

“I just got done bawling my eyes out,” Morris senior Taylor Warwick said when asked about her reaction to the sixth game. “We knew coming into this Plainfield South and Mi-

Sickler was the primary reason Minooka finished as close to Morris as it did, bowling four games above 200, including a 233 in the second.

Minooka also had Heather McCubbin place 12th with a 1,083, Nora Russell place 13th with a 1,071 and Lexi Jones place 19th with a 1,000.

“We had our ups and downs,” Sickler said. “Our coach talked us though us so it wasn’t like one versus another. It was just keeping each other up.”

Minooka and Morris, along with Joliet West, fourth-place Plainfield South and 10 advancing individuals, will now head to Plainfield Lanes this weekend for the Plainfield Sectional.

Morris will try to end a four-year drought since its last state final appearance, which is the program’s longest since at least 1980. Minooka is seeking a sixth consecutive state-final berth.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump, and West leads the club queen. How should declarer plan the play? In particular, how should he handle the heart suit? And would his method vary if he had a second dummy entry?

South, with no time or entries to work on diamonds, should try to take these nine tricks: three spades, three hearts, one diamond and two clubs.

But how should he go after those heart winners?

If declarer had sufficient dummy entries, he would play a heart to his ace and a heart back to dummy’s queen. The chance of success would be just over 22 percent.

Here, though, that will not work, due to a lack of a second dummy entry. Instead, South should hope that East has king-singleton or -doubleton in hearts, which, of course, is even less likely at just more than 9 percent. At trick two, declarer leads the heart eight (or nine) from the dummy and, unless covered, runs it.

With his layout, West takes the trick with his 10 and perseveres in clubs.

South wins with his king, cashes the heart ace to drop the king, and plays a heart to dummy’s nine (or eight). Yes, very lucky, but many would not take advantage of the good fortune. **
