Born: July 18, 1943 Died: Dec. 6, 2014 David D. Byers, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Regency Health Care, Morris. Born on July 18, 1943, the son of the late Harry and Martha (nee Leake) Byers.

Brother of Lois (the late Larry) Keisler, Sally (Bob) Walker, Dan (Marty) Byers and Bill Byers; dear uncle, great uncle and great great uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his mother, father; brothers, Harry Byers and Jack Byers; as well as nephews, Bruce Quillen and Richard Keisler.

An avid Chicago Bears fan and Cubs Baseball enthusiast David is fondly remembered for his admiration of Ernie Banks.

NEIL PETERSON Born: Aug. 11, 1922 Died: Dec. 7, 2014 Neil Peterson, age 92, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehab Center. Born August 11, 1922, to the late Elias and Ellen (nee

A longtime Grundy County area resident, where Neil attended rural schools and farmed for many years.

Neil married Margaret “Peggy” (nee Phillips) June 16, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris.

He retired from Sheridan Prison as a Correctional Officer for over 18 years.

Survived by his two children, Tom (Bonnie) Peterson and Mary Ann (Ron) Terry both of Seneca; grandchildren, Chris (Mary Ann) Peterson, Matt (Allison) Peterson, Jason (Tina) Terry, Chad (Christina) Terry, Justin (Heather) Terry all of Seneca, Mike (Lauryn) Peterson of Evanston and Marcy (Brandon) Babcock of Germantown Hills; 17 great grandchildren; in-laws, Rob (Betty) Phillips, Delores Phillips both of Morris and Rudy (Viv) Maierhofer of Seneca and several nieces and nephews also survive.

BRIEFS Wilmington bicyclist’s death being investigated WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – Illinois State Police are still investigating the weekend death of a Wilmington man struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.

John P. Baggio, 32, of Wilmington, was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m. Sunday at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy on Baggio was performed Sunday and preliminary reports show multiple injuries

due to the vehicle striking him, according to the coroner’s office. Cause and manner of death will be determined pending autopsy, toxicology and police reports.

Baggio was riding a bicycle on West Frontage Road just south of Lorenzo Road in Wilmington Township when he was struck by a vehicle, the coroner’s office said Sunday.

Authorities said the incident appears to be an accident.

Illinois State Police said Monday afternoon that no charges had been brought in the matter,

and the vehicle’s driver was not injured.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent COAL CITY – Beneath the cool glow of a full moon, dozens of mourners holding candles and white flowers circled together Saturday night to pay respects to children they had lost.

For some, the memories were from years past. For others, the losses were more raw.

One Coal City mother came to mourn the death of her daughter, Aimee Swyndro, who died in 2007, and her granddaughter, Alyssa Swyndro, who died only last year.

Still dealing with the pain, the only word she could muster about the vigil was “bittersweet.”

This was the eighth Angels of Hope Candlelight Vigil, held at the Angel of Hope Memorial Garden in Campbell Memorial Park in Coal City. The garden and cherub angel statue were erected in 2006 as a place for those who have lost a child to honor the memory of a son or daughter.

Every year at 7 p.m. Dec. 6, the Coal City Angels of Hope organization hosts a candlelight remembrance ceremony.

The public is invited to gather with those who have endured similar losses, and all may leave a flower at the base of the statue in honor of a child lost at any age.

The Coal City High School choir, Footnotes, began the vigil Saturday with a cappella versions of “Silent Night” and “Amazing Grace.”

Angels of Hope President Jamie Sikora said the group grows larger each year.

“We are a family that grows together annually,” she said.

I think it reminds them that they’re not alone, and that is so important.”

Janice Unger was there with her husband, Jerry, to honor the memory of their firstborn, Amy Genevieve Unger. Janice Unger helped begin the group years ago.

“We’ve been here every year, in memory of our daughter,” she said. “It’s a beautiful ceremony. ... People come from all over. There’s always a speaker. It’s a way to show that your loved one is still remembered, and you can share your grief with others.”

No matter what age the child, Janice Unger said, it’s a painful type of grief to lose a child. A friend of hers lost her son when he was in his 30s, she said, and it’s hard on her, too.

It was Paul and Phyllis Cherrone’s third time attending the vigil. They lost their grandson two years ago.

“We want to keep Landon’s memory alive,” Phyllis Cherrone said.

Sikora said the group’s goal is to offer faith, love, grace and hope to those who have lost a child. The statue was inspired by the book, “The Christmas Box,” by Richard Paul Evans, she said.

Sikora said her daughter, Lola Lavezzi, the speaker of the night, was significant.

Lavezzi spoke to remember her twin brothers.

“It’s an important reminder that it’s not just the parents who lost someone,” Sikora said. “These children lost out on a lifetime with their siblings.”

Angels of Hope vigil allows families to mourn

“They’re going to have their dreams come true,” Kiss said. “I can hardly wait to go meet her and see her face.”

MORRIS – Some events that transpire during Operation St. Nick’s annual radio auction are so filled with emotion and the spirit of giving that Shirley Kiss has trouble talking about them.

One happened Sunday, during this year’s auction at the WCSJ/WJDK newsroom in Morris.

“It was unbelievable,” said Kiss, vice president of the Operation St. Nick board. “It touched me so.”

Operation St. Nick is a nonprofit organization that helps Grundy County families in need throughout the year with programs for Christmas, back to school, veterans and more. One of its programs is the 12 Days of Christmas Giving, designed to help struggling military families with their Christmas wish lists.

One of this year’s veterans is a single mother who didn’t know how she would provide for her three children this Christmas. Kiss read her letter on air. Her son loved sports and her daughters dolls.

“The kids were good kids and deserved a good life,” Kiss said after the show. “A little later, Kevin asked me to read

ly updated Schmitz, Kiss and Schramm of the bids. Just before each hour, as the auction items expired, there was usually a rush of last-minute bids.

“It’s absolutely incredible,” Schmitz said. “It’s because of the generosity of everybody in Grundy County. We imagine every child as our child. We make sure that where there is need, that family will have a Christmas they would not have had otherwise.”

Schramm said many people stepped up and showed the true spirit of the event. Some called repeatedly, upping their bids on a particular item. When they did not have the highest bid, they called again and donated to the cause anyway, with nothing received in return.

“It’s really stunning to me that that much money can be raised in the small town we are,” Kiss said.

Several donations were mailed in, and area residents trickled in and out of the studio with monetary donations, such as Tim Neary with a $1,000 check from the Morris Eagles Club.

“Our club is made up of good people, and most of the money we raise goes to charities,” Neary said.

6 Committee recommends raising salary for HR director position

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – If a candidate in the running for human resources director for Grundy County accepts the offer for the position, she could make as much as $70,000 a year.

Personnel Committee members initially recommended the salary for the position to not exceed $65,000 a year at last week’s meeting.

But Monday evening, members of the Finance Committee unanimously approved to raise the salary for the position to not exceed $70,000.

“If we want to attract professional quality people we have to offer a professional salary,” said David Welter, County Board chairman.

David Nelson, vice chairman for the County Board, said the salary increase is an incentive for the candidate to

stay in the position long term.

“If you bring her in at a low salary, she’s not going to be happy from the start,” Nelson said after Monday’s meeting.

County officials have not publicly shared the name of the candidate they are making an offer to.

Committee member Ann Gill voted in favor of the salary increase and said there’s a lot of work that needs to be done in the human resources department.

“We’ve been moving forward yet standing still because of the constant turnover. There’s no consistency in HR,” Gill said at the meeting.

Even though the County Board has its eyes set on a certain candidate to fill the position, another candidate is still being considered.

member, said one of the candidates who has previous experience working in human resources requested a salary near $70,000.

“I know the recommendation [from the Personnel Committee] came at $65,000, but I didn’t feel good about that after doing more research,” Geiger said at Monday’s meeting. “We need to get someone in that department. If the salary becomes an issue, I’m torn between the two candidates and may decide to go in the other direction.”

Geiger said the board is leaning to choose the candidate with previous experience in the government entity.

She said she would be making the call to offer the candidate the position of human resources director Monday evening.

“I hope they will be agreeable to joining the Grundy

County team,” Geiger said after the meeting.

The full Grundy County Board will vote on the candidate at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

On Nov. 10, the full board officially accepted the resignation of the past human resources director Debra John-

son.

Johnson has been working intermittently as human resources director up until Dec. 1. But she will still help train the new hire on nights and weekends. Johnson resigned from the position because the Personnel Committee wanted a full-time director.

Franciskovich said. “We have a lot of kids that walk here after school, as well, with their class. If they don’t finish their work in class, they’ll come here, get on the computer and finish.”

The Safe Routes to School Program aims to encourage children to walk and bike to school by providing a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation website.

More than 50 projects statewide will soon be underway to create these safer routes, with repair and new construction of sidewalks, pedestrian countdown signals and speed limit feedback signs, according to the release.

Matt Fritz, Coal City village administrator, said the village plans to construct more than 4,000 linear feet of sidewalk by next summer and hopes to start construction by spring.

The administrator said new sidewalks will be added on Fourth, Third, Kankakee, Garfield and Shabbona streets. Flashing speed limit signs will be installed on

Kent Bugg, school superintendent, said there aren’t many sidewalks in the designated areas for improvement.

“If kids have to walk to school, they would have to walk in the street,” Bugg said.

“Some sidewalks stop midblock and some blocks don’t have any sidewalks.”

Bugg said the school district and village will each match $20,000 in funding for the sidewalk improvements.

Those matching funds, combined with the $160,000 from federal funds, means up to $200,000 for sidewalk improvements.

“Every student in that area will have a continuous sidewalk to the elementary and intermediate schools. That was the goal of the grant,” Bugg said. “Student safety is always our No. 1 priority. Anything we can do to encourage our students to get physical exercise by biking or walking to school is important.”

South Wilmington also will receive $157,268 under the state program for sidewalk improvements near South Wilmington district schools.

COAL CITY – Safer sidewalks are set to be constructed in Coal City near local schools and the Coal City Public Library District, thanks to federal funds from the Illinois Safe Routes to School Program.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Saturday that Illinois was awarded $5.9 million in federal money for the program, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Coal City and Coal City Community Unit School District 1 will receive a combined $160,000.

Schools located in the neighborhood where sidewalks will be improved are the Coal City Elementary and Intermediate Schools, both a few blocks away from the local library.

“Some sidewalks are in bad shape and the concrete is crumbling. This can be a tripping hazard and cause anyone to fall,” said Jolene Franciskovich, Coal City library director. “Anything that makes it safer for kids to walk here is great. Nothing is more important than the safety of the kids in the community.”

Franciskovich said the library partners with local schools to offer services to children, such as book clubs and local history classes. Students from the elementary and intermediate schools come to the library occasionally before the start of the school day, she added.

Local schools support Morris family following house fire

clafortune@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Local schools are collecting donations to support a Morris family whose home sustained $60,000 worth of fire damage over the weekend.

Immaculate Conception School is collecting gift cards from retailers such as Target, Wal-Mart and American Eagle, as well as area restaurants, to support the family, Principal Kim DesLauriers said Monday.

“The contents of their home, the smoke damage, they’re pretty well destroyed,” DesLauriers said. “They do have housing in Seneca, but again, right now it’s to replace what their immediate needs are, clothing and that type of thing.”

In times such as these, the school often turns to its clubs and organizations for support, Hussey said. The high school also has a fund of donated money that comes from the community, which supports families who suddenly find themselves in need of help.

“Hopefully, all these things

will open up, and we’ll be able to help them as much as possible, and they’re able to get through this hardship a little easier than might be if they didn’t have a community all rallying around them,” Hussey said.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District received a call about the fire at 300 Meadors Circle at 9:12 p.m. Friday night, Chief Tracey Steffes said.

“The first engine arrived and they located a fire in the kitchen of the home,” Steffes said.

Crews had the fire out within about five minutes of arrival, Steffes said.

The homeowner was not home when the fire started, but discovered it upon returning, Steffes said. The homeowner’s dog was lost in the fire.

“It was an accidental fire in the kitchen area, on the stove,” Steffes said. “It’s a possibility that one of the burners on the stove might have been accidentally turned on by the dog.”

The fire caused about $60,000 in damages, Steffes said. While damage to the home’s structure is minimal, there was heavy fire damage in the kitchen and smoke and heat damage throughout.

As a result, the home is uninhabitable, Steffes said.

12 Community Foundation encourages support, involvement in Senior Network

By DEVAN GAGLIARDO Program Director for the Community Foundation of Grundy County MORRIS – I truly love the Christmas season, the lights that ignite wonder in eyes both big and small, the smell of pine and cinnamon, the cookies, and yes, even the snow.

I also enjoy how nice everyone is. Aside from the occasional irrational shopper trying to get this year’s hottest toy, people are generally caring and giving this time of year.

Many Grundy nonprofits have year-end events that are heavily supported by the local

community. The Salvation Army bell ringers, We Care’s adopt-a-family program, and Operation St. Nick’s annual auction. In addition, many nonprofits, the Community Foundation of Grundy County included, reach out to donors for year-end giving.

Our annual appeal just went out and we have already seen a great response! I know I speak for all the nonprofits when I say “thank you!” Your support means so much to all of us.

This year’s annual appeal letter discusses several projects the foundation will be working on in 2015. Our grant-

making for 2015 will focus on youth, seniors and people in need, but right now I want to focus on seniors. Over the last few months, the foundation has been convening the Senior Network, which is made up of service providers who work with seniors. The purpose of us meeting is to begin identifying the needs for this group in Grundy County. We quickly began learning seniors want to see more recreational and social activities offered in Grundy County.

The Senior Network has been working to identify what activities are currently happening and what other activi-

ties seniors would like to see.

The Senior Network is working closely with the Senior Center in Morris to potentially use its facility for some new activities. Our hope is that we can add to the many activities already taking place and work with existing organizations to add to their activities calendar where it makes the most sense.

After we meet the recreational activity need, we may move onto to larger needs seniors voiced concerns about, such as affordable housing.

We meet the third Monday of every other month; however, the January meeting has been moved due to the Martin Lu-

ther King Jr. holiday. Our next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Morris Senior Center, 913 Pine St., Morris. We would welcome anyone who serves or has an interest in the senior population to attend. If you are interested in attending or would like more information on the Senior Network, call Devan at 815-941-0852.

If you are a nonprofit serving Grundy County seniors, I would encourage you to keep the foundation’s grantmaking in mind for 2015 as we hope to make an impact on this group.

OPINION State minimum wage failure rests on the officials involved Pretty much every Statehouse finger of blame was pointing north toward Chicago for the minimum wage hike bill’s failure during the legislative veto session, which ended last week.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel does indeed have a lot of explaining to do. His decision to move up a vote to pass a $13 an hour minimum wage for his city completely undercut Springfield’s efforts to pass a statewide minimum wage capped everywhere at $11 an hour.

Months ago, Emanuel scheduled a vote on raising Chicago’s minimum wage for the week after the General Assembly’s annual fall veto session. After the election, however, retailers, restaurant owners and other business groups agreed to an eventual $11 an hour statewide minimum wage – but only if Chicago and other home rule municipalities were not allowed to raise their own local wages above that amount. Proponents say they were within two votes of House passage before the second and final week of veto session when Emanuel quietly filed paperwork calling for a special hearing on his own minimum wage proposal before the second week kicked off in Springfield.

There was just no way House Speaker Michael Madigan would publicly rebuke his city’s mayor by reversing that ordinance via state law. It’s just not in his nature to go up against a mayor like that.

Even so, Speaker Madigan himself shares in the blame here. Yes, he’s not all-powerful, but he probably could’ve passed a minimum wage bill during the spring session. Instead, he didn’t want to rile up business groups before an

VIEWS Rich Miller election and believed he could use the issue to fire up his party’s base and the unions in the November election.

Former Senate President Phil Rock wrote in his book “Nobody Calls Just to Say Hello,” that he wanted to pass a bill guaranteeing women unpaid maternity leave. Rock told Madigan and another House Democrat that he’d like to get the issue off the table by passing it. The Senate President believed Madigan was stalling.

That’s Mike Madigan: Use an issue for political advantage rather than pass it into law. And he’ll likely use the minimum wage issue again next year, perhaps by passing a bill that he knows will be vetoed by a Gov. Rauner.

In reality, however, the minimum wage referendum didn’t work as planned.

And instead of a statewide attempt to partially catch up with Chicago’s minimum wage during veto session, the whole effort fizzled.

The governor announced plans to make the minimum wage hike his final legacy, but he didn’t bother to make sure his ducks were in a row before saying so. And that is Pat Quinn in a nutshell.

He’s good at press conferences, not so spectacular at governing.

This was, in the end, a failure of policy, of politics and of governance all around. Low-wage workers deserved better.

MINOOKA – On Friday night, the Minooka boys basketball team took a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter against Plainfield North and lost. Indians coach Scott Tanaka was understandably concerned about how his young team would react to the defeat.

Turns out, his concerns were unfounded, as the Indians made seven of their first eight shots Saturday night against Morris en route to a 23-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

That lead stayed intact the rest of the way, and Minooka claimed bragging rights in the series with a 63-43 victory.

“You never know what you’re going to get with a young team like ours,” Tanaka said. “After being up 20 against Plainfield North and losing, it would have been easy for our guys to hang their heads and lay down in this game. But they didn’t, and that’s a credit to these kids.”

The Indians (3-3) jumped to a quick 8-0 lead on a basket by junior Joe Butler and two straight 3-pointers by classmate Larry Roberts. After Austin Patterson – who led all scorers with 30 points – got Morris on the board with a short jumper, Minooka went on another 8-0 run to take a 16-2 lead with 3:28 in the first quarter.

Roberts and fellow junior Nick Clemmons each had fast-break layups in that run, and sophomore Jon Butler ended the quarter by getting fouled on a 3-point attempt and making all three free throws.

Joe Butler led Minooka with 19 points, while Jon Butler had 15 and Roberts 13.

“We don’t care who gets the points,” Joe Butler said. “Whoever has the first open shot takes it. As long as it goes in, it’s good.

“We wanted to come out with a lot of energy tonight, and we were able to do that.

It’s always nice to beat Morris anytime you play them in anything.”

MINOOKA – In the season’s first five games, Minooka’s Brooke Lynn Bachmann had not played her best game.

That changed Saturday night as Bachmann scored 21 points to help lead the Indians to a 49-35 nonconference win over neighborhood rival Morris.

“Brooke Lynn missed a lot of our preseason practices with a couple of injuries,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “This was easily her best game of the season so far.”

A scrappy Morris team took an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter when Leona Burton hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Redskins’ lead grew to 13-8 when Meghan Smith hit a pair of free throws to start the second quarter, but Minooka ended the quarter with a 12-2 run to take a 20-15 lead into halftime. Bachmann had six points in the spurt.

Also instrumental in the Indians’ victory was the defense, which limited Morris’ leading scorer, Julie Jurasits, to just four points.

“We got Sydney Arlis and Kelly Carnagio in foul trouble in the first half,” Liberatore said. “That kind of hurt us a bit, but a big key for us was Hailey Arlis, a sophomore, coming in and playing tough defense on Jurasits. If you can hold her to four points, you have a good chance to win the game.”

That sums up bidding a bridge hand rather well. It is not just a matter of counting high-card points. If you find a fit with partner, you should also include short-suit points (or, even better in my opinion, apply the Losing Trick Count).

Look at the East hand. South opens one diamond, West makes an aggressive takeout double, and North passes.

What should East do?

Assuming he is unable to bid in no-trump, an unpassed hand usually makes one of these advances: nonjump in a suit, 0-8 points; single jump in a suit, 9-11; cue-bid of opener’s suit, 12-plus.

However, these numbers should include short-suit points when at least an eight-card fit is known.

So, even if East discounts the diamond queen, his hand is worth 13 points: 10 high-card points and three for the singleton diamond. This means that East should cue-bid two diamonds.

South would rebid two hearts, West would double or pass, North would correct back to three diamonds, and now East can jump to four spades.

If South sacrifices in five diamonds, West should double and collect 500.

Four spades makes easily, losing one spade, one heart and one diamond.

At the table, East only jumped to two spades. South rebid three diamonds, East competed with three spades, South – not reading the vibes correctly – went to four diamonds, and, luckily for him, all passed. Down one was a great result.

Teen hesitates to confront mother over drug abuse Dear Abby: What are the signs of prescription drug abuse?

How would you suggest a young person like me (I am 13) confront a close family member about something like this, especially since I’m not sure?

I found an antidepressant prescribed for my mother. As long as I can remember, she has been a happy and upbeat person, and I have no reason to suspect she’s depressed. I’m worried she may be abusing the medication.

I have never felt comfortable asking questions, so it would not be easy for me to ask her. Please help. I now have trouble even speaking to her.
