Michael A. Brizzolara, of South Wilmington, is being held in the Grundy County Jail on $100,000 bond, with 10 percent to apply, on charges of aggravated battery to a child, a Class X felony; aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony; and aggravated battery to a child, a Class 3 felony, according to a news release from Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With Christmas just around the corner, Operation St. Nick President Joe Schmitz is preparing for the annual radio auction on Sunday.

“It all started in 1983 with the auction of one item, a Cabbage Patch doll,” Schmitz said.

The first auction brought in $895 for the much-coveted doll, which every parent had to have for their child that year, but was in short supply.

The next year Operation St. Nick raised $1,362 by auctioning off five of the beloved Cabbage Patch dolls.

Each year the auction has grown, with the 25th anniversary auction in 2007 bringing in $121,000, the first time the organization raised more than $100,000 in one auction.

Since 2007, the auction has continued to bring in more than $100,000 each year. Last year broke the 2007 record, with $134,640 raised.

“It’s amazing to raise that kind of money in a small community like this,” Schmitz said.

Operation St. Nick is a nonprofit organization that helps Grundy County families in need throughout the year with programs for Christmas, back to school, veterans and more.

The 32nd annual 103.1 WCSJ AM and FM Radio Auction will run from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. To bid on an item, call 815941-1000, ext. 101. If you get a busy signal, call 815-252-3860 or 815-975-4369.

The organization never sets a specific goal for what to raise at the auction. Instead, the board meets each January to look at the amount raised and plans its budget accordingly.

WCSJ personality Kevin Schramm will host the Operation St. Nick auction again this year with Joe Schmitz on Sunday in Morris. in toys and clothes from WalMart, and each family with between $300 and $500 in food.

This year, Operation St. Nick will provide for at least 158 children from 60 families in Grundy County.

Parents are notified when they are chosen and are given time to go to the Morris WalMart, where they pick out gifts for their children. They leave the items at the store and Operation St. Nick elves purchase them, making sure they are

age-appropriate and fit within their guidelines.

The items are delivered to the families closer to Christmas.

Each year, items to be auctioned off are on display at Standard Bank on Route 6 and Deerpath Drive in Morris, and this year there are items at Athletic Outfitters and Sklut’s Mens Wear in downtown Morris. Those interested in checking out some of the items ahead of time can visit these lo-

cations.

For the past several years, the Morris Cruise Night Committee has restored items and donated to the auction. This year is no different.

The committee donated a 1960 Northwestern 10-cent gumball machine, a 1960s three-sided wood phone booth, and a 1960s Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile Pedal Car. Herb Wyeth, with the Cruise Night Committee, said the group used to donate between

$500 and $1,000 in cash, money left over from Cruise Night.

Now that money purchases items to refurbish and sell.

“The items we’ve donated for the past three years have averaged $9,000,” Wyeth said.

“If that doesn’t do your heart good, nothing will.”

Other auction items include a whole-house generator from Baker Electric in Morris, valued at $2,250. There’s a trip to the American Girl Doll store in downtown Chicago, with a limo ride and three $100 store gift certificates, as well as a $100 gift certificate for dinner.

This has a minimum bid of $1,000.

There also is a handmade Blackhawks Stanley Cup Champions glass top table, custom-made for Operation St. Nick.

The auction has something for everyone, Schmitz said, including sports items, jewelry, artwork, Christmas decorations, collectibles and excursions.

County panel OKs new transparency software System follows in Will County’s digital footsteps

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Software recently approved by Grundy County’s Technology/Elections Committee will help increase transparency for the County Board and clerk’s office, according to vice chairman David Nelson.

Committee members approved last week the software, called IQM2, for Grundy County use.

David Welter, County Board chairman, said Thursday the software cost the county $16,000 and should be implemented by March.

The software, made by Accela Inc., will help manage county agendas, minutes and supporting documents by streamlining internal processes and getting information out to the public in a more accurate and timely manner.

“If you go to the website, you won’t see updated minutes from the last couple of months,” Nelson said. “I’m not saying that’s anyone’s fault, but we can do

better. We should get that stuff out there as quickly as possible so the public can see it.”

Nelson said IQM2 will allow preparation of agendas and distribution of minutes to be automated in a template form.

“If Sandy [Pommier, administrative assistant] prepared the minutes, the software will automatically route to who needs to see it next,” Nelson said. “This will allow us to have cost reductions because we won’t have to worry about people working overtime.”

The vice chairman said visitors to the website, grundyco. org, will be able to watch live and archived board meetings.

He added he believes Grundy County will become the most transparent county in the state in the next few months.

“If they want to see the part of the video when the vote went down, this system will break it down to the issue the person is interested in,” Nelson said. “I want to be held accountable to the people who elected me. This makes it easier for citizens to do that because they know what’s going on.”

Nelson said the county will start live-streaming videos of board meetings and that he wants to live-stream committee meetings as well.

“The bulk of county work

happens in those committee meetings and citizens rarely show up to those meetings,” Nelson said.

Welter has been live-streaming videos from board meetings from his laptop for the past few years. He said live-streaming the video from an elevated camera in the board room would give viewers a full view of everyone.

“We already have a camera set up at the top of the board room,” Welter said. “The microphones board members speak into will be hooked into the feed. We’re getting better sound quality and a better picture.”

IQM2 software also has other features, such as capturing and storing audio of different events, 24/7 streaming of channels and podcasting, electronic voting and speaker queue, conference and automated camera system integration and PowerPoint display.

Nelson said Will County began using the software in November.

The vice chairman said the county will use IQM2 in its five buildings, which include the administration center, animal control and courthouse, highway department, sheriff’s office, as well as in a number of different departments.

Counterfeit bills passed at local businesses

cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Reports of counterfeit money use in Morris has the secret service assisting Morris police in an investigation.

The Morris Police Department has received reports of three instances where counterfeit bills were passed at local businesses.

The first report was made Nov. 30. Two older style $100 bills with the same serial number were passed in the same store, but in separate transactions, according to a news release from Morris police. It appears the offender made small purchases in an effort to transfer the counterfeit bills to real dollars.

The offender in this case was captured on surveillance video. He is described as a black male, between 18 and 30 years old, between 5’10” to 6’3” tall, weighing between 170 and 210 pounds, wearing dark clothing, and a stocking cap. He possibly drove a white full size van with writing on the side, according to the release.

“In my experience, there is probably more than one person doing this,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said.

The second report was made Tuesday by another business. It received a counterfeit $20 bill.

The business believed the bill was received during a Nov. 30 transaction.

A third report was made by a local bank that received a counterfeit $100 bill that matched the serial number of the previous $100 bills reported. This counterfeit was discovered by the bank during the processing of the business’s night deposit.

The Seneca Police Department also received the same counterfeit $100 bills on Nov. 29, according to the release.

The U.S. Secret Service has been notified and has opened an investigation through the Chicago Field Office.

“One of their focuses is counterfeiting,” Dite said. “When we contacted them, it probably peeked their interest because there is likely similar reports in the area. Traditionally, that is why they would get involved.”

Businesses and banks are advised to be diligent in examining bills that might be counterfeit, especially during this holiday season. If a bill appears to be counterfeit, contact Morris police at 815-942-2131.

The secret service has two websites that can offer tips and downloadable guides: www. newmoney.gov and www.secretservice.gov. The Morris Police Department also has a limited quantity of brochures, “Know Your Money,” provided by the secret service.

COAL CITY – Superintendent Kent Bugg updated the Coal City Community Unit School District board Wednesday on the progress of the community help center.

The school district has partnered with Diamond, Coal City, the Coal City Fire Protection District, the Coal City Public Library District and Coal City police to open “Help for Hope,” according to Bugg’s report to the board. This new organization will assist needy families throughout the holidays.

Gordon and Cathy Milne of Coal City, who previously ran the Coal City Clothes Closet, are running the new center.

The center is a 24/7 resource for community members in need, Bugg said. It has emergency food, clothes and other items on hand, Bugg said, and will help families get in touch with other resources.

In about three weeks, a building has been secured as well as cleaned, painted and prepared for the upcoming season. The location is on Route 113 across from the laundromat.

“We have been able to secure a location rent-free for the next three months, which

will get us through the winter,” Bugg said. “I’m proud to be able to get started so quickly.”

Bugg stated that cash donations to the help center are being accepted at this time and are the most helpful. Future plans include setting up a board to dictate the center’s actions.

“If you live in our community, we feel we should be able to help you break the cycle of poverty and improve your life,” Bugg said.

Late start option

The prospect of a “latestart” for students was discussed at length by board members. By moving the start of the school day later by one hour, students would make it to school in a safe manner on days when weather is a factor.

“After talking with administration at Minooka High School, this seems like a real possibility,” Bugg said. “The only thing that might be affected is morning practices.”

By starting only one hour late, the day is still counted as full, preventing the need for make-up days in June.

MAZON – Tina Brookman likes to think about the joy of a child opening gifts on Christmas as she sorts toys for people in need at Toys for Joy, an annual toy giveaway.

“A lot of families don’t necessarily fall into brackets where they can receive help,” Brookman said. “This outreach helps them financially at holiday time.”

For the past four years, Brookman and her daughter Jamie Brookman, as well as Kris Webster of Mazon, have collected new and used toys, cleaned the toys and given them to families in need – free of charge.

Brookman said many volunteers work hard to get everything ready.

“There are a lot of people involved,” she said. “It takes many hands to get the work done.”

Toys for Joy takes place on the first two Saturdays of December at the Mazon United Methodist Church.

The free event is for families in need during the Christmas season, giving them the chance to pick up toys and other items for their children.

Last year, in addition to toys, they received clothes, Christmas trees and household items.

Organizers try to keep the tables at the event geared to age groups and want to have items for children from newborns to teens. Brookman said they are still collecting toys and could use items for

Sensitivity, respect needed in societal discourse Mike Ditka will say anything at any time. Bidden, unbidden – it doesn’t matter.

Whatever is on his mind soon will be on its way to you. It’s his appeal. It’s his moneymaker.

On Tuesday, the topic was the five St. Louis Rams players who, before a game Sunday, raised their arms in a “hands up, don’t shoot’’ pose to protest the decision not to indict Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown.

The former Bears coach and current ESPN football analyst said Brown never raised his hands in surrender to Wilson and that “a policeman’s life is ruined.”

After picking my jaw off the floor, I thought, “I can’t believe that someone with such a high public profile would say what he said in such an in-your-face manner,” followed by, “This could be his undoing.”

Followed by, “Wait, why can’t he say what he did?”

We all have opinions. Some we say out loud. Some we don’t, for propriety’s sake. But propriety isn’t always enough of a reason not to say something.

Call the 75-year-old doddering if it makes you feel good, but lots of Americans his junior agree with him. If there is going to be a solution to the racial problems in this country, people have to be heard, no matter how much you might disagree with them.

But there has to be a better way than plowing over the other side like a tight end might.

Ditka does a weekly column for the Sun-Times called “4 Downs with Mike Ditka.” An editor calls him with four questions, and Ditka opines. Most of the time, the questions have to do with football, but because it’s impossible to separate sports from everyday life, the real world sometimes elbows its way into the discussion.

That was the case Tuesday, when an editor asked Ditka about the Rams players who had raised their hands in protest as they took the field Sunday against Oakland. Ditka instead went off on the protesters in Ferguson.

“I’m not sure they care about Michael Brown or anything else,” he said. “This was a reason to protest and to go out

VIEWS Rick Morrissey and loot. Is this the way to celebrate the memory of Michael Brown? Is this an excuse to be lawless? Somebody has to tell me that. I don’t understand it.

I understand what the Rams’ take on this was. I’m embarrassed for the players more than anything. They want to take a political stand on this?

Well, there are a lot of other things that have happened in our society that people have not stood up and disagreed about. “… What do you do if someone pulls a gun on you or is robbing a store and you stop them?

I don’t want to hear about this hands-up crap. That’s not what happened. I don’t know exactly what did happen, but I know that’s not what happened. This policeman’s life is ruined. Why? Because we have to break somebody down. Because we have to even out the game. I don’t know. I don’t get it. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned.”

The national response was loud on both sides. Some of

those who disagree with him have jumped on his age to explain what they take to be his kookiness. He’s at an age when many people don’t care what they say or who hears it.

There’s a freedom that comes with getting older. There also are pitfalls, and if Da Coach’s career as a media star and serial product endorser some day is done in by his tongue, no one will be surprised.

But some of Ditka’s comments aren’t so different from those of NBA TV commentator Charles Barkley, who called Ferguson looters “scumbags.”

Barkley is 51 and black.

“The cops are awesome,” he told CNN. “They’re the only thing in the ghetto between this place being the wild wild West.”

This is where it gets difficult. The Ferguson situation is a tinderbox right now, and words have the potential to start a fire. Brown’s stepfather screamed, “Burn this [Expletive] down,” upon hearing the news that a grand jury had chosen not to indict Wilson.

No one can be sure if his words were the accelerant, but burn Ferguson did.

Timing and tact matter.

When all one side can think about is the loss of a teenager’s life, it’s probably not the best time to bemoan the fate of the man who killed him. Especially in print and especially if you’re Mike Ditka. It simply doesn’t help, you know?

I happen to believe in the physical evidence that showed Brown was the aggressor in his encounter with Wilson. I also understand that the black community’s distrust of police goes back decades. Those of us who haven’t experienced that firsthand have to be sensitive to those feelings. It’s why I wouldn’t think of blurting out what Ditka did, especially if I worked with African-Americans Tom Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson and Cris Carter on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” as he does.

There’s something to be said for sensitivity and respect.

And choosing words very, very carefully.

Kromer comes to Bears well-traveled Offensive coordinator develops grasp on NFL offenses

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Technically speaking, Aaron Kromer is in his 25th year of coaching football, which is about half his life dedicated to teaching the game. But really, it goes all the way back to high school.

“When I was a high school player, basketball and football, I used to like working with the young kids at the camps, so I’d always go and do those things at the high schools and in the local area,” said Kromer, the Bears offensive coordinator.

Kromer grew up in Castalia, Ohio, which had a population of 935 per the 2000 census. He went to Miami of Ohio to play football – offensive tackle – and had pretty big aspirations considering his hometown.

“I went in to get a teaching degree – I thought I was going to be a high school teacher and coach.

I was from a small town, and that was high ambition in itself.”

Kromer didn’t exactly have a big sports background in his

family, but important traits to life and coaching were learned in his household.

In Year 25, Kromer will join his fellow staff members in coming under criticism for what has been a disappointing season for the Bears, especially on offense.

His two areas of expertise, offensive line and running game, have at times been the only highlights.

Kromer was considered one of the top assistants in the league when he came to Chicago from New Orleans.

Randy Walker was hired at Miami Ohio during Kromer’s senior year and asked Kromer to stay on as a graduate assistant.

Kromer said he was taking the same coaching path Walker took with Dick Crum, a head coach at Miami in the mid-1970s and then North Carolina from 1978 to 1987.

In 1999, Kromer made his first move to the Chicago area, joining Walker on the Northwestern staff, coaching the Wildcats’ offensive line. In 2000, Northwestern was a co-Big Ten champion

It took only two years in the Big Ten before Kromer made the move to the NFL, and that’s when he met Marc Trestman.

It also was a great way to network. Jon Gruden hired Kromer to join his Raiders staff, where Kromer said he got a “doctorate in football” from the current “Monday Night Football” analyst, and he joined Bill Callahan and Trestman on Oakland’s offense.

Kromer then went with Gruden to Tampa Bay, but he always wanted to coach with someone he met at Miami and had become good friends with, Sean Payton, the Ohio Redhawks’ offensive coordinator from 1994-95.

The highlight on Kromer’s résumé before coming to Chicago was the success of the Saints’

offense, including a Super Bowl title after the 2009 season, but it’s the six games he was interim head coach in 2012 that also stand out.

“It was a weird situation because no team has never really been in a situation like that,” said Jermon Bushrod, Kromer’s left tackle in both New Orleans and Chicago. “I think he did a great job filling in. He understood his task Jermon that he was only Bushrod going to be in that Bears position for six offensive weeks, but I think linemen he made the best out of it.”

Bushrod appeared in only three games in his first two NFL seasons before Kromer came to New Orleans. An injury thrust Bushrod into a prominent role protecting Drew Brees’ blind side. After starting all but two games over the next four seasons, Bushrod was able to cash in on a lucrative contract with the Bears.

He credits some of his career success to the tutelage he has received from Kromer, now in two different stops. And Kromer’s

presence in Chicago helped Bushrod’s free-agent selection of the Bears.

“His techniques and everything that he’s preached has been pretty beneficial to me,” Bushrod said. “He’s been pretty patient with me over the years.

I fight to grow as much as I can, and to work on things, and he’s been very understanding with that and he’s helped me out a lot along the way.”

Bushrod has seen the development of Kromer, from a pure Oline coach to someone who now has a good grasp of NFL offenses.

“He’s had more on his plate, he’s not just dealing with the offensive line. He’s working more with the offense, working more with the quarterbacks,” Bushrod said. “Just trying to help everyone out that’s around him, trying to bring along the younger guys, continuing to help out us older guys that have been in this league for a little while. It’s been great, the things he’s been able to bring.”

Redskins wrestlers roll past Hubs

The match started with the 145-pound weight class, and Redskins wrestler Shain Hennessy wasted no time in getting things going. Actually, he wasted all of 16 seconds to pin Rochelle’s Isaiah Ramos and put Morris ahead, 6-0. The Redskins never looked back en route to a 54-24 Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover victory.

“Shain did a great job of getting us going,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said. “He’s 3-0 now, and he has looked really good so far.”

Morris’ A.J. Vota won the 152-pound match by forfeit, then Cody Baldridge lost, 5-2,

by Rochelle’s Alex Harvey to make the score, 12-3. Ryan Olsen then dominated the 171-pound match for Morris, scoring a takedown and three near-fall points almost immediately against Javier Aguirre.

Olsen then allowed Aguirre to escape and took him down again before finally recording the fall at the 1:50 mark to hand Morris an 18-3 lead. Ryan Kowalczyk then won by forfeit at 182 for Morris before Victor Toussaint matched Hennesey’s feat with a 16-second win by fall over James Rosenberg to put the Redkins comfortably ahead, 30-3.

“We had a lot of quick falls tonight,” Lanning said. “That was nice to see. Ryan Olsen was very aggressive tonight in his match. All of our kids were, really. The guys came out ready and were really attacking. That’s the kind of team we want to have.

“I would rather be on the attack and be proactive in a match than wait and react to what the other guy is doing.

Some teams like to react, but I prefer to take a shot and lose than sit back and wait.”

Things changed over the years. We could ramble on for pages about the myriad reasons why pheasant numbers declined. The real culprit however, is habitat loss. As I drove home from Iowa, I scanned the landscape. Acre after acre, mile after mile, and no substantial cover for the birds could really be found. Once in a great while, I might see a lonely patch of Conservation Reserve Program that could possibly hold a few birds, but not very often. I wished I had a snapshot of the same land 30 years ago. It would be interesting to compare.

Lekwa mentioned this in his article. He talked about a man he spoke with who wanted to blame the red-tailed hawk for the collapse of pheasant numbers. He wondered when the Iowa Department of Natural Resources was going to release a statement about the hawks role in this event and do something about it. Lekwa said they wouldn’t. Why? Because it’s just not true.

He asked the man to look

around him. To take a moment and check the surrounding land and point out where a pheasant could survive. The man couldn’t find any place that would hold birds. Point made.

Take heart, however. Good pheasant habitat can be created and the results would positively shock you. When a landowner, or habitat group, like Pheasants Forever, adds the right mix of grasses, timber, winter cover, and water, the pheasants can not only survive, but they can thrive.

I have witnessed several such habitat projects in Illinois.

These habitats were small. Both of them were about 10 to 15 acres. Despite this, the project managers took great care to provide everything needed for the full life cycle of a ringnecked pheasant.

In both of the habitat islands I walked through, the number of pheasants I witnessed was nothing short of shocking. They looked like chickens running all over the place. There were so many I almost didn’t want to hunt. It seemed like it would be too easy.

When proper habitat exists, there are more than enough birds to sustain the population, satisfy hunters, and withstand natural predation. We have seen huge success stories

Last week, I settled in for a few wonderful days at my brother’s house in Iowa. It was nice to spend some time together as family. As I lounged around, I thought back to past pheasant hunts I participated in around the central part of the state.

As fate would have it, my dad handed me the Friday edition of the Ames Tribune. The back page was fully dedicated to the outdoors. There were articles on ice fishing, interesting facts about wild turkeys, and one article that really caught my eye. It was titled, Build it and they will come.

I knew right away that the author, Steve Lekwa, would be talking about habitat, its loss, and how it can be rebuilt.

He focused on the ring-necked pheasant. That amazing animal used to be the “king” of all game birds, as he puts it.

For many years, the central states boasted massive populations of these upland creatures.

Hunters would travel great distances to pursue them. The local economies benefited from these hunters coming in from all over the country. Gas stations, hotels, restaurants and other local businesses held open arms to the seasonal guests. Signs would hang from street posts saying “Welcome

Violent speech seen on Facebook

The United States protects free expression to a far greater extent than other liberal democracies. But even many free-speech advocates are uneasy about a case argued in the Supreme Court this week involving a Pennsylvania man who took to Facebook to engage in violent and vituperative speech about his estranged wife and law enforcement officials.

Anthony D. Elonis vs. the United States is the quintessential “hard case” in which an odious person is seeking the protection of the First Amendment.

But the court would be making bad law by upholding Elonis’ conviction and the legal theory underlying it.

After his wife left him, taking their two children, Elonis wrote: “If I only knew then what I know now, I would have smothered [you] with a pillow, dumped your body in the back seat, dropped you off in Toad Creek and made it look like rape and murder.” When his wife obtained a Protection From Abuse order, he posted this on Facebook: “Fold up your PFA and put it in your pocket / Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?”

At his trial Elonis insisted that his posts – some of which resembled rap lyrics – were “therapeutic” and not threats to commit violence. Nevertheless, he was convicted under a statute making it a crime to transmit “any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another.” In his appeal, Elonis argues that to be punished for a threat, a speaker must intend to threaten. The Obama administration counters that it is sufficient that a “reasonable person” would regard the speech as threatening.

The latter approach might seem sensible, but it could lead to punishment for protected speech that, as the American Civil Liberties Union put it, is “crudely or zealously expressed.” On Monday, Justice Elena Kagan noted that “we typically say that the First Amendment requires a kind of a buffer zone to ensure that even stuff that is wrongful maybe is permitted because we don’t want to chill innocent behavior.”

Government must be very careful before it punishes speech, especially if the speech doesn’t clearly incite or threaten violence. That principle argues for overturning Elonis’ conviction. But we would make one additional point. In a friend-of-the-court brief, the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project expressed concern that a ruling for Elonis might make it harder for judges to grant restraining orders like the one Elonis’ wife obtained.

The group asked that, if the court holds that intent is required for a criminal threat prosecution, it should “distinguish and carefully safeguard civil protection orders.”

We agree. A “rap lyric” about murder might be protected by the First Amendment, but it also can serve as evidence that the author must be kept away from a fearful spouse.

St. Nicholas is returning to Manhattan When members of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church celebrate their patron saint’s feast day on Dec. 6, they may be able to mark the occasion with prayers on newly blessed ground in lower Manhattan.

It depends on work schedules at the construction site for their new sanctuary, which will overlook the National September 11 Memorial. This is a problem Greek Orthodox leaders welcome after a long, complicated legal struggle to rebuild the tiny sanctuary – located 80 yards from the World Trade Center’s South Tower – which was the only church destroyed in the 9/11 maelstrom.

“It’s all of this powerful symbolism, and its link to that Sept.

11 narrative, that lets people grab on to the effort to rebuild this church and see why it matters,” said Steven Christoforou, a youth ministry leader at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Facing the giant holes at ground zero, he said, it was natural to see them as tombs, as symbols of never-ending grief.

Today, the footprints of the twin towers have become fountains in reverse, with curtains of water pouring into a dark void that disappears underground at the 9/11 memorial and museum.

But sometime in 2016, or early 2017, the new St. Nicholas National Shrine will literally shine – a

St. Nicholas vanished beneath a firestorm of concrete, steel, glass and heat. Few objects from the church survived, other than an embroidered velvet Bible cover minus its Bible, and a bell clapper minus its bell. Workers found marble altar fragments, a twisted candelabrum and beeswax candles – which survived even though a 700-pound fireproof safe vanished.

“We remember this very place filled with ruins, hiding under piles of debris, the pulverized remains of 3,000 innocent victims. Breathing a very heavy air, saturated with the dust of storm, wood, iron and with tiny particles of human bodies, we remember walking with heavy hearts to the specific place where our St. Nicholas Church stood as a building for more than a century,” said Archbishop Demetrios, leader of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, during recent groundbreaking rites for the shrine.

“We stood there frozen, paralyzed, and cried.”

It was horrible, yet holy. A

sanctuary had become a small collection of relics.

One icon that did survive is called the Life-Giving Font. Its Byzantine image shows the Virgin Mary embracing the Christ child above a font of blessed water that flows into a large marble basin below, which is shaped like a cross. In the symbolic language of iconography, this one image – now connected to 9/11 – combines baptism, sacrifice, death and new life.

When it’s time to consecrate the church, he added, its leaders will focus on one final symbolic detail. The safe that vanished contained a gold-plated ossuary holding small bones from three saints, including the 4th century’s St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of orphans, merchants, sailors and all those in distress.

“That is the time when we can reach out to other churches” around the world dedicated to St. Nicholas, said Father Evagoras Constantinides. “That is when we will try to find a way to replace what was lost and bring St. Nicholas home again.”
