Born: April 27, 1939; in Harrisburg, PA Died: Nov. 29, 2014; in Morris, IL Virginia “Ginger” Rae Larkin, 75, of Morris, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014, at home with her family by her side.

Born in Harrisburg, PA, on April 27,

1939, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Nina (Spangenberg) Walden.

Virginia was raised and educated in Wichita, KS. At the age of 17, she moved to Morris. In November of 1954, she married Kenneth E. Yard and they were married for over 30 years. Ginger worked for 38 years at Jefferson/Smurfit, retiring in 2001. She was also union president for many years. In 2001, she married Bernard “Bernie” Larkin who preceded her in death in October of 2012.

Ginger was a member and volunteer at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She is a cancer survivor since the age of 32. Her hobbies included playing Euchre with her card club and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, James R. (Karla) Yard, Kevin Yard,

Denise (Greg) Gillespie, and Keith Yard, all of Morris; grandchildren, Tara (Jeff) Wilson, Angella (Todd) Crose, Lucinda Yard, Jake (Christy) Yard, Jennifer Murdaugh; Mitchell, Natalie, and Ashton Yard; Chanda (Travis) Kinney, Ginger (Ray) Hollenbeck, Benjamin Radigan; Leah (Dan) Peat; Mark Yard, Christopher (Katie) Yard, and Riley Yard. Also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, William (Alice) Walden of Andover, KS; Mariva Scherck of Bellville, IL; Charles (Margot) Walden of Vancouver, WA; and Sheila Walden of N.E. Prior Lake, MN. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Sr. and Nina Walden; infant son, Kenneth Eugene Yard, II; Kenneth Eugene Yard, and Bernard Larkin; and a sister, Gail Winkler.

day, December 4, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Virginia.s Life will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Greg Gillespie officiating.

Cremation rites will be accorded.

Memorials may be made in Virginia’s name to the Cancer Society.

• Kelly S. Tondini, 44, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Nov. 28 on a charge of driving under the influence. She was given a Dec. 29 court date.

• Kevin A. Walker, 19, of Minooka, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Nov. 29 on a failure-to-ap-

pear warrant for possession of cannabis.

• Kathi L. Avery, 55, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Nov. 29 on a driving under the influence charge. She was given a Dec. 29 court date.

• Paul E. Izral, 44, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Nov. 30 on charges of domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

• Denise N. Higgins, 34, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Nov. 30 on two counts of battery. She was given a Dec. 29 court date.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Emma Johnson went with her mother to Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center to show residents her dog, she became concerned about how the residents would spend Christmas.

“Emma said they must be lonely at Christmastime,” said her mother, Debra Johnson. “She asked if their family came on Christmas or if Santa came to see them.”

She said Emma wanted to bring them something Christmas Day, and immediately started to think about what she could do, since her pocketbook wouldn’t allow her to purchase an item for everyone.

“She asked if she could color them a picture,” said Debra, who works at Park Pointe in Morris.

With that simple question, an idea was hatched and Emma enlisted the help of her friends. She set a goal to make sure every resident had a hand-colored picture for Christmas.

After Debra posted the plan to her Facebook wall, others decided they too wanted to help.

“When I saw Debra’s post on Facebook, I thought it was such a generous gesture that Emma was taking her time to give each nursing home resident a reason to smile on Christmas,” said Christi Punke, Emma’s third-grade teacher at Saratoga School.

“I wanted to help her out,”

Punke added. “Since she is in my class at school, I figured that was a great way for my students to not only help Emma, but also give a little to their community and the residents.”

She also was contacted by friends who teach at Rainbow Preschool in Morris, asking if their kids could contribute to the colored pictures.

Debra said with all the help, they hope to have enough pictures to take them not only to Park Pointe, but also to Saratoga Tower and other senior residences.

On Tuesday night, Emma sat on her living room floor, coloring with her friends Aubrey Phillips, 9, Brooklyn Lind, 8, and Rosie Beal, 8, all of Morris. The girls were surrounded by coloring books and copied pages laying around the table, which was filled with crayons of every color.

“It’s fun,” Beal said. “I just like to color.”

They said they picked pictures of baby Jesus and other Christmas images they thought the residents would

Phillips said she won first place in the Corn Festival Coloring Contest, so she was ready to color as many pages as she could.

The giggling group of girls said they can’t wait to drop off the pictures and they each

have their own idea of how the residents will respond.

“I think they like to see littler kids like us do something for them,” Phillips said. “It shows them someone cares about them.”

Emma will deliver the pictures on Christmas Day with

her mother and her father, Ken Johnson, so she can see the reactions for herself.

“We don’t have a big family so we are able to go there on Christmas Day,” Debra said.

“I’m impressed by Emma’s interest in making Christmas special for others.”

County Board trims number of committees from 14 to 11

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Decreasing the number of county committees will help save money for Grundy County and also will help committees perform more efficiently and effectively, according to new County Board chairman David Welter.

Board members approved reducing the number of county committees from 14 to 11 at Monday’s re-organizational meeting.

“This is something new. We ask the board members and public to bear with us as we get through this first month of determining when committees will meet and the duties committees will be responsible for,” Welter said Wednesday.

The chairman said some board members, both Democrats and Republicans, saw the new committee list before it was finalized and gave their ideas and suggestions.

But, Welter added he made the final decision to reduce the committees.

“Some people had some concerns, but I did my best to explain why this would work best,” Welter said.

Board member Millie Dyer, now the chairman of the Health Committee, said most board members got surveys for the new committee list and she didn’t receive one.

“I was just assigned, and I don’t know why. I would have liked to know which committees I was on,” Dyer said Wednesday. “I feel everyone should be treated the same. I do have a voice.”

David Nelson, vice chairman for the County Board, said when he was on the Community Relations Committee, the meetings would only last for 10 or 15 minutes.

“We just paid the county to bring in five board members for a short meeting. It’s a waste,” Nelson said Wednesday. “This is so we’re not wasting the taxpayers’ money with these meetings.”

The Facilities Committee has been combined with the

Law and Justice Committee, the Education Committee has been combined with the Health Committee and the Land Use Committee has been combined with the Environmental Committee.

The Tax Committee has been combined with the newly formed Economic Development Committee, and the Rules and Community Relations committees have been omitted from the County Board’s committees.

Other new committees for the county for 2014 through 2016 include the Strategic Planning Committee and the Legislative Committee and Veterans Assistance Commission.

Nelson said the new Economic Development and Tax Committee is important because it will help bring in more jobs to Grundy County and will make the county more attractive to other businesses.

The vice chairman also said the new Legislative Committee and VAC, formerly the Rules Committee, will focus on how external regulation effects Grundy County.

He added the new Strategic Planning Committee will focus on long-term goals for Grundy County.

“We’re looking one year down the road all the time and this committee will help us to look 10 to 20 years down the road,” Nelson said. “Things can catch us off-guard if we stay short-sighted.”

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Zachary Beatty has plans to bring a new selfserve ice machine to Morris next year and with an unanimous vote Monday of a zoning variance by the Morris City Council, the install at 220 Bedford Road is one step closer.

“I have a relative that owns one down south,” Beatty said Tuesday. “They started being popular in the southern part of the country, and they are working their way up.”

The building will be built on the northeast corner of the Echo Bowling Lanes east parking lot between the bowling alley and Walgreens.

The building is 9 feet wide by 26 feet long and 15 feet high.

It will accept credit cards or cash and will dispense either a 16-pound bag of ice or 20 pounds of ice deposited directly into the customers’ cooler for $2. It also will offer water at 25 cents a gallon.

A variance was needed for the rear yard setback of 37 feet as well as a side yard setback variance of 10 feet to keep the building on the edge of the lot.

Beatty decided to get involved and open his first one in Morris even though he’s from Somonauk.

“I plan to start in Morris and work on opening them in the Illinois River Valley,” he said. “My uncle lives in Morris, and I’ve considered moving there.”

Beatty said he hopes to market to boaters who come to Morris to put their boat in the Illinois River, as well as to local residents who have a need for ice for their parties and events.

Beatty will have to run water and sewer connections to the location, as well as get electrical service. He plans to have it up and running by the end of February.

Personnel Committee recommends half-day for employees on Christmas Eve 7 MORRIS – A proposed recommendation to give Grundy County employees a half-day off for Christmas Eve raised some questions and concerns from committee members at Tuesday’s Personnel Committee meeting.

Members of the committee approved giving the time off to county employees. The recommendation is set to go Tuesday before the full board for consideration.

“I think we’ve got some great employees and if we can appreciate them then let’s do it. I would like them to plan ahead for their family,” said Vicki Geiger, chairwoman of the Personnel Committee. “For families who will

have a large gathering, it’s nice to get home by noon on Christmas Eve.” Geiger said the time off on Christmas Eve serves as a small token of the county’s appreciation of the hard work of its employees.

Geiger said she’s confident other county employees also would be willing to assist with opening the building on Christmas Eve. Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said the half day might cause some rumbling within the sheriff’s department since the county’s police and correctional officers have to work 24/7, including Christmas Eve. Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Wednesday the county adding a last-minute half day off – as was done last year for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve – has been an issue with his department in the past.

Sheriff’s deputies work 12 hours and get paid holidays, so when they work holidays, they get 24 hours rate pay, Callahan said. If the county had decided to give employees a half-day off Christmas Eve for the holiday prior to the budget being done, he said he would have prepared for it financially.

“I can’t pay them for it because I didn’t know anything about this,” Callahan said.

If the full board next week approves the half-day, Callahan said officers in the department will receive an additional six hours of alternative time off for next year instead of getting paid.

This was done last year when the County Board decided to close the county Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Seneca students highlighted for leadership

OTTAWA- Congressman Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, hosted his 3rd Annual Youth Leadership Summit in early November at Illinois Valley Community College.

High schools throughout the 16th District were invited to bring their school’s top student leaders to the event, including Seneca High School and Minooka Community High School.

“I want to thank all the

schools that participated this year,” Kinzinger said in a news release. “I had a blast hanging out with all the students from Seneca and Minooka. These students are tomorrow’s leaders, and after meeting them, I know we’re in good hands.”

Kinzinger impressed upon the students the role of kindness and compassion in leadership. Aside from Kinzinger, students also heard from Scott Altman, retired Navy Captain Test Pilot and former NASA

astronaut and Carl Cannon, founder of the ELITE Youth Program and motivational speaker. Both of the speakers shared stories of adversity and relayed how overcoming these obstacles transformed them into the leaders they are today.

Kinzinger ended the day by talking about how everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Leadership depends on how a person uses those strengths and weaknesses.

Let’s keep antics out of government There is good news and bad news regarding state government during the past week.

The bad news, of course, is that our state is still in shambles. The half-hearted pension reform legislators passed has been ruled unconstitutional. The unfunded pension liability is around $100 billion.

There’s another $6 billion remaining in unpaid bills.

The good news? It appears there will be no lame-duck session of the Legislature in January. Or as state Rep. Jack Franks put it: “There will be no shenanigans as there have been in the past.”

Those past shenanigans include the January 2011 lame-duck session, when tax rates were raised 67 percent and 46 percent on households and businesses, respectively. The increases were billed by Democratic lawmakers as necessary to stabilize the state’s desperate finances. Instead, almost all of the revenue was swallowed by ballooning public pension obligations.

How the tax increase was pushed through in that lame-duck session was despicable. Some outgoing Democrats who lost re-election bids traded a “yes” vote for a government job.

Those leaving the Legislature who voted “yes” could no longer be held accountable for their actions.

No lame-duck session this January means the January 2011 tax increase will start to sunset. It will decrease from 5 percent to 3.75 percent on individuals, and from 7 percent to 5.25 percent on businesses, not counting the 2.5 percent corporate personal property replacement tax.

Now, it’s on to Jan. 14, when Bruce Rauner is sworn in as governor and the 99th General Assembly is seated.

Rauner and lawmakers have their work cut out for them. Hard decisions must be made, including decisions on wasteful spending, a budget that will have a large hole in it and if lawmakers will vote to again increase taxes.

Perhaps all involved can continue to keep shenanigans out of the equation.

Anti-smoking efforts working, but we can do better There is plenty of good news in the latest statistics on smoking released last week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but that doesn’t mean Americans cannot and should not do better.

The proportion of adults who smoke was 17.8 percent in 2013, the lowest level since the 1964 ground-breaking surgeon general’s report, the first loud alarm about the deadly effects of cigarettes.

Smoking’s popularity has fallen by more than half since 1965, when 52 percent of men and 34 percent

of women were regular cigarette smokers, compared to last year’s rate of 20.5 percent among men and 15.3 percent among women.

The results of the National Health Interview Survey, an in-person report compiled each year, found other positive developments in 2013.

People who still smoke are smoking less.

In 2005, 80.8 percent of smokers said they lit up every day; last year, that was true of 76.9 percent of smokers. The daily users also puffed on fewer cigarettes a day – 14.2 versus

16.7 in 2005.

A 50-year study on the health consequences of smoking released earlier this year credited increased awareness of the diseases caused by smoking and new policies that ban lighting up in public for the long-term reduction in cigarette use.

Even China has taken notice. Last Friday, a historic tobacco control law was adopted for the capital Beijing, copying the restrictions in place across America; starting in June, the city will ban smoking in indoor public spaces, workplaces and on

public transportation.

Americans, even with significant declines over the long term, are probably puffing too much to be able to cut the portion of smokers to 12 percent of adults by 2020, a goal set by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Attaining that low threshold will require a double-barreled approach – lots of smokers will have to give up the habit, and a concerted effort will have to be made to stop young people from picking it up.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Basketball season already in full swing VIEWS Rob Oesterle Even though it seems like football season just ended, basketball season for the boys teams in the area already has gotten started and is in full swing. Many teams already have played five games. Given that most teams play right around 30 games a year, some seasons already are 15 to 20 percent finished.

I have seen four of the six teams in the Morris Daily Herald’s coverage area – Morris, Coal CIty, Gardner-South Wilmington and Seneca. I will see Minooka when they play host to Morris in a girls-boys doubleheader Saturday night and also plan to make it over to Newark soon.

Morris is off to a 4-1 start, with its only loss being to IC Catholic Prep, a team that reached the Sweet 16 in Class 2A last season and will be very hard to beat in that class again this year. When the season started, Morris coach Joe Blumberg knew that his backcourt would be the backbone of the team, but further success would depend on the development and production of the frontcourt.

In Tuesday’s 50-42 win over Seneca, the Redskins got 16 points from post players, far above the production from that position in the first four games. If that type of play continues from the Morris big men, look for a sixth straight winning season from the Redskins and perhaps, a deep postseason run.

Another team that shows promise is Gardner-South Wilmington (2-2), but the Panthers are nearly polar opposites of Morris. GSW’s strength is under the basket, where Kyle Robison and Blake Marks make life tough for opponents. With those two working in the paint, the Panthers will be a force to be reckoned with in the River Valley Conference as well as a tough out once the Class 1A

Coal City (1-3) and Seneca (0-5) are works in progress, as both saw a bulk of their production graduate from last season. Coal City’s Matt Long is the biggest of the area big men, and has shown a soft touch from outside.

Seneca, however, has been riding the hot shooting of guard Ben Rohder, but has some other talent that just needs time to develop. Don’t be surprised if both teams are markedly improved after Christmas break and give

their Interstate Eight rivals a run for their money.

Although I haven’t seen Minooka yet, I do know they have the Butler brothers, Joe and Jon. Those two just find ways to score, and the Indians went 2-2 at the WJOL Tournament, held at University of St. Francis, over Thanksgiving break. Minooka will have its hands full this weekend, with back-toback games against Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield North and neighboring Morris.

DANCING IN MINOOKA

On Sunday, the Minooka dance team will be hosting an IHSA invitational, starting at 9 a.m. on Route 6 at the Minooka South Campus. More than 30 teams, including Morris, will be in attendance. The JV competition kicks off at 9, with Minooka scheduled to take the stage at 10:54. After Rosary’s varsity team performs at 11:18, the youth dance companies Encore Dance, Pam’s Dance, Gina’s Dance and Mueller’s Dance will all perform, then Morris’ varsity shows its stuff

at noon. Minooka’s varsity ends the competition at 2:54.

The event is a fundraiser for the JV and Minooka Dance teams, known as the “Arrowettes.” Admission is $5 for adults and students with ID, and senior citizens are $3.

Children age 5 and younger are free. There will also be a bake sale and a selection of vendors.

Murray, Cowboys are the real deal this season BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush It’s not that the Dallas Cowboys aren’t for real, they are.

They’re deserving of their 8-4 record and they should beat the Bears tonight at Soldier Field.

But Dallas is flawed, and interestingly enough, the Bears will be far from the best matchup Dallas has seen this year.

Question No. 1, of course, is will the Bears show up?

It’s impossible to know right now what their relationship is with their coach and what kind of hold coach Marc Trestman has on the locker room.

But I don’t believe, whatever you might want to say about them, that guys such as Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall, Jermon Bushrod, Roberto Garza, Jeremiah Ratliff, Jared Allen, D.J. Williams or Tim Jennings are quitters.

I don’t think anyone else on the roster is either, but those players specifically are proud veterans who’ve won in the league before. Whatever issues they have right now, they will show up and fight.

Particularly crucial for the Bears will be whether Ratliff, who is listed as questionable because of a balky knee, can go. Not because he’s an ex-Cowboy looking for revenge, because he’s that rare

If the Bears are to win, defensive linemen Ratliff, Stephen Paea, Allen, Willie Young, Will Sutton and Ego Ferguson are going to have to play their best game of the year.

You probably have heard by now the strength of this Cowboys team is the offensive line, led by first-round picks Tyron Smith, Travis Fredericks and Zack Martin.

As good as running back DeMarco Murray has been, those guys are the biggest reason for his success. If the Bears vetertans up front on de-

fense can turn it into a street fight, they won’t stop Murray, but they can keep him from taking over the game.

That will be where Williams comes in. Knowing what the Cowboys want to do, it would be a mistake for the Bears to play as much nickel as they have to date, and the linebacker has the stuff to take the middle of the field away from Murray if given the chance.

Jon Bostic has to play sound assignment football at weakside linebacker, and I’d start Christian Jones over Shea McClellin at strongside linebacker, but if McClellin has the ability, this is the game in which he can silence

a lot of doubters.

Of course that still leaves Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, who right now is a better player than Bears receivers Marshall or Alshon Jeffery.

Bryant is gong to make some plays.

Again, this is a game to flip the script. Kyle Fuller has been asked to be the Bears’ No. 1 corner since Charles Tillman went down, and he’s struggled.

If the Bears get Jennings on Bryant as often as possible, Jennings willl lose a few, but I suspect he’ll win enough to stay competitive.

If you dare Cowboys quarterterback Tony Romo to beat you, he usually can’t.

Defensively, the Cowboys come in just 22nd in total defense, 22nd vs. the run, 20th vs. the pass, 28th rushing the passer, 30th in third-down efficiency and 16th in points allowed.

The Cowboys’ best defensive player was LB Justin Durant, who went out for the season about five weeks ago.

Barry Church now leads them in tackles from the safety spot, but if the Bears turn Forte loose, the Cowboys have nobody to match him.

Dallas Linebacker Rolando McClain will get my vote for Comeback Player of the Year and he will make some splash plays tonight, but he’s not a guy who will run with Forte all night long.

Defensive tackle Henry Melton is healthy and I’m happy for him. The truth, however, is he really has been just average this year with five sacks, with only two tackles for loss and two passes batted down. Bears offensive guard Kyle Long should win that matchup.

The Cowboys come in sixth in the league in time-of-possession advantage; the Bears are 11th.

If the Bears are willing to commit to Forte on the ground, stay with him and win that battle keeping Murray off the field, this becomes a winnable game.

MORRIS – The Morris wrestling team started its season Tuesday by splitting their squad into two varsity teams that competed against Princeton and Knoxville. Morris defeated Knoxville, 54-18, while Princeton edged the other Morris split squad by a score of 37-36.

Morris winners against Knoxville were Michael Milton (106), Abby Eisenbeis (113), Alec Matteson (132), Jacob Barkley (138), Shain Hennessy (145), Collin Tucker (152), Kaden Laurie (182), T.J. Jungles (195) and Andrew Faught (285).

Redskin victors against Princeton were Kenny Litchfield (106), Marques Kjellsvik

(126), Jeff Palmer (145), A.J. Vota (152), Cody Baldridge (160) and Victor Touissant (195).

“For opening night, we wrestled pretty well,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said. “The loss to Princeton is disappointing, but it is a long season ahead. Coach [Steve] Amy does a nice job over there, and I look for them to have some individuals that will make some noise come the end of the season.”

We have a fork play in bridge, named after Cardinal Morton, who was made the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1486 and Lord Chancellor of England in 1487 by Henry VII. Whichever you turn, you lose. It is highlighted in this deal.

West led the club queen. What should declarer have done?

After North’s three-spade game-forcing rebid that showed threecard support, South wondered if a grand slam were makable, but sensibly settled for the uninformative leap to six spades.

South had 10 top tricks: six spades, two hearts and two clubs. He needed to establish his heart suit to gain the extra tricks. That would have been easy if the five missing cards were splitting 3-2, but what if they were 4-1?

Declarer won the first trick with dummy’s king and drew two rounds of trumps with dummy’s honors. When West turned up with three, South sensibly decided that if either opponent had a singleton heart, it was more likely to be West than East. Declarer played a heart to his ace and returned a heart toward the dummy. What could West have done?

Nothing! If he had ruffed, dummy would have played low. Then South would have taken the next club, unblocked dummy’s heart king, ruffed a diamond in his hand, and ruffed a heart to establish his suit. And when West discarded, declarer won in the dummy and conceded a heart trick to East.

Swollen legs and ankles have multitude of causes Dear Doctor K: Why are my legs and ankles swollen?

Dear Reader: Swelling of the legs from a buildup of extra fluid is known as edema. In addition to the swelling, the skin above the swollen area is stretched and shiny. Your doctor can easily check for edema by gently pressing a finger over your foot, ankle or leg with slow, steady pressure. If you have edema, you will see an indentation where the doctor pressed.

Swelling of the legs and ankles is usually not serious.

However, it can be caused by diseases of the heart, lungs, liver and kidney.

Where does the extra fluid come from? About 60

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff percent of our body weight is from water. The water is in three “spaces.” Most is in the space inside each cell.

Some is in the space between our cells.

The rest is in the space inside our blood vessels and a few other locations.

Water passes back and forth between these spaces.

The presence of edema means that there is more fluid than normal in the space between the cells. Usually, this extra fluid comes from

the fluid inside the blood vessels.

Edema of any cause is often worst in the legs and ankles.

When we’re sitting or standing, gravity pulls the water inside blood vessels downward. That raises pressure inside the blood vessels, which pushes water out into the space between the cells.

The two most common causes of leg and ankle swelling are (1) prolonged standing or sitting, especially in hot weather; and (2) weakness of tiny valves inside the veins of the legs.

The weakened valves make it more difficult for the veins to pump blood back to the

heart. As a result, water leaks out of the veins and into the space between the cells.

Pregnancy can cause edema in the legs. The baby and uterus press on the veins carrying blood from the legs to the heart. Like weakened valves in leg veins, this causes water to leak out of the veins and into the space between the cells. Fluid retention during pregnancy also can be caused by a more serious condition called pre-eclampsia.

One serious cause of leg and ankle swelling in adults is congestive heart failure.

When the heart is not pumping efficiently, some blood

pools in the veins of the legs (again, because of gravity), and water leaks into the space between the cells.

Another cause is low protein levels in the blood, often the result of malnutrition or kidney and liver disease.

This produces swelling not only in the legs and ankles but everywhere; puffy eyes and face are common.

A more serious cause of swelling in the legs and ankles, and in the face, is a seriously underactive thyroid gland.
