fewer roads closed despite snow

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com GRUNDY COUNTY – Despite a light snow Wednesday morning, water levels in Grundy County subsided, opening several roads for traffic.

The amount of road closures listed Wednesday morning on the Grundy County website by the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency had decreased to seven compared with 23 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

An email from GCEMA Director Joe Schroeder on Wednesday morning stated residents should refer to the Grundy County website, www. grundyco.org, and the GCEMA Facebook page, www.facebook. com/GrundyCountyEMA, for information on up-to-date closures and weather conditions.

The GCEMA announced Wednesday morning on its Facebook page it measured 1.9 inches of recent snowfall at the Grundy County Emergency Operations Center in Morris.

By MIKE MALLORY DWIGHT – The body of the driver of a car reported submerged in water at 8 a.m. Tuesday on Campus Road, s mile south of Route 17 in rural Dwight, was found Wednesday morning.

Shawn Beaupre, a 49-yearold man from Bourbonnais, was pronounced dead by the Livingston County coroner at 11:01 a.m. Wednesday, said Dwight Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Justin Dyer, whose agency was among those that responded to the incident. Beaupre was

While the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a full investigation, Dyer said it appeared to agencies at the site that Beaupre escaped the vehicle and tried to make it out of the water.

Keys were not found in the vehicle and the driver’s-side window was down, Dyer said, indicating Beaupre likely decided to leave the car.

Coal City tornado

The most powerful tornado to hit the area since 1990 devastated the village of Coal City on June 22.

The EF3 tornado, classified as more powerful than the one that hit the neighboring village of Diamond in November 2013, ripped through parts of Coal City, Braidwood and Carbon Hill. There were no fatalities, but Gov. Bruce Rauner declared Grundy County a disaster area.

The tornado damaged 884 properties, at a cost of millions of dollars.

Shortly after the tornado passed at 10 p.m. that Monday, emergency response agencies and officials from several counties quickly set up command centers and relief points.

Some trapped residents were freed from their homes. Others were injured.

As residents whose homes had been torn apart sought refuge, the emotional and tense environment in some cases led to confusion, misunderstandings and frustration. Some neighboring Braidwood residents felt neglected as aid piled up in Coal City. First responders set up Facebook pages and used other forms of social media to combat bad information and miscommunication on where to get the proper help.

But out of disaster came the spirit of a community that is still picking up the pieces.

Stories have spread of businesses, military veterans from Team Rubicon and Coal City kids who set up a lemonade stand that have worked to assist in relief efforts.

The village government refinanced $4.85 million in bonds while issuing $3 million more in bonds, costing taxpayers $6.3 million extra to cover cleanup costs, including demolition of damaged homes. The Long Term Recovery Committee in Coal City has given out more than $350,000 in aid to those affected by the tornado.

In June, the Morris City Council tabled a vote on the CPU after a threehour public hearing full of opposition from nearby residents. Then, in July, the council approved the location with a 5-3 vote.

Those who voted in favor said the issue was about whether the group met zoning codes, as the state already granted the dispensary license. Those in opposition said the dispensary was a crime threat.

Greenhouse Group said Nov. 4 in a public informational meeting that it is hoping to open in February. On Nov. 7, Laborer’s Local 75 picketed the construction site and Mosaic Construction LLC, which was hired as general contractor.

in 2015 when write-in candidate Doug Hayse edged out incumbent Julian Houston in the primary election.

Just three days after Hayse was sworn in May 1, 2nd Ward Alderman Ken Sereno retired after 34 years on the council. This left the remainder of his term open.

Mayor Richard Kopczick then tried in June to appoint Houston to fill Sereno’s term, but the appointment was voted down by the council.

In July, Kopczick tried to appoint local businessman Sid Nelson, but that was voted down by the council as well.

Kopczick then officially appointed Houston, citing state statute that says a mayor can appoint someone without approval by the council if the first two attempts are voted down.

Hayse resigned Nov. 2 after serving five months on the council, citing a need to devote more time to his growing business and his family. On Dec. 21, Kopczick appointed Nelson to fill the remainder of Hayse’s term. It was approved by the council.

In June, John Dollinger of Channahon reported he had lost 20 percent to 25 percent of the crops he planted north of the Illinois River, and about 10 percent south of the river.

In July, Doug Bailey, chief program specialist with USDA Farm Service Agency in Springfield, said officials were seeking a secretarial disaster declaration to make farmers eligible for low-interest loans to help with flood-damaged crops.

Sara Mitchell, associate crop insurance specialist at 1st Farm Credit Services in Ottawa, said of Grundy, Kendall and LaSalle counties, 1st Farm saw 2 percent no plant claims for farmers who were unable to plant.

Tasha Bunting, Grundy County Farm Bureau manager, said in November she didn’t expect the county’s farmers to see record-breaking yields like those experienced nationwide last year.

Library fires, rehires Carol Hutchings

In July, Morris Area Public Library children’s librarian Carol Hutchings was fired after working for the library for 37 years by Director Lorene Kennard.

At the August library board meeting, 127 people signed a letter of support for Hutchings and asked the board to reinstate her as the children’s librarian.

An online petition to reinstate Hutchings with 1,500 signatures was also presented to board members.

After a lengthy executive session, the board voted, 4-3, to reinstate Hutchings. Board President Steven Larson voted no, as did board members Michelle Pruim and Linda Jones.

The reason for the termination was never stated publicly.

Heroin hits Grundy County

In 2015, three people died of heroin overdoses in Grundy County and charges related to heroin have become numerous.

Angela and Rodney Ridgley lost their daughter, Brittney Ridgley, on April 24, when she was found dead of a heroin overdose in her grandmother’s home in Braidwood. The couple spoke at the Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force heroin forum Oct. 26 at Morris Community High School. The forum is an extension of a series held in 2014.

On July 24, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite reported that heroin was believed to be the cause of four non-fatal overdoses that occurred in less than 48 hours in one week in Morris.

On Sept. 9, Grundy County Coroner John Callahan reported there had been three heroin overdoses in Grundy County and at least one more Grundy County resident died of an overdose in another county, all in a 45-day span.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said heroin-related cases peaked in Grundy County about three years ago and have remained steady since then.

Costco, Morris annex 140 acres for meatpacking plant

Emergency responders were called April 1 to Pete’s Shell gas station at 725 E. Division St. in Coal City for a report of a person who had been shot. voted Sept. 21 to approve an annexation agreement between the city, Costco Wholesale Corp. and K&S Real Estate LLC for the annexation of about 140 acres in Saratoga Township along North Lisbon Road in Grundy County.

Costco will spend an estimated $120 million for a 255,996-square-foot meat processing plant expected to open by mid-2017.

The plant will employ about 155 people – about 220 during peak times of the year – and bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in property taxes to be disbursed among several taxing bodies.

The council on Oct. 5 approved design plans for $2.9 million in improvements to the city’s east-side sewage treatment plant that are necessary to handle output from Costco’s plant.

Shooting in Coal City

Authorities responded April 1 to the Shell gas station at 725 E. Division St. in Coal City after reports of gunfire were called in.

When the Coal City police arrived at the gas station, they found Adam Fierro, the owner of a Braidwood trucking company, in a silver Dodge Ram bleeding from gunshot wounds.

The suspect, Walter L. Webster, turned himself in April 8 to the Grun-

dy County Jail and was charged on two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery.

Webster was being held on a $1 million bond, in which 10 percent, or $100,000 cash, was required for his release, according to court records. His bail was posted April 9.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said Monday that the county is waiting on forensic evidence from the state before it proceeds in the case.

Webster is still out on bail.

Teri Shaw resigns from District 54

District 54 superintendent Teri Shaw resigned earlier this month.

She resigned Dec. 14, and Al Gegenheimer was named interim superintendent at the regular school board meeting that night.

In regard to her resignation, the board handed out a news release stating that Shaw’s leaving was by mutual agreement.

“On Dec. 14, 2015, by mutual agreement and settlement the Board of Education of Morris Elementary School District 54 and Superintendent Teri L. Shaw, decided to end their seven-year, eight-month contractual relationship

effective Dec. 31, 2015,” a release handed out by school board President Jerry White stated. Shaw had no comment on the matter.

Lisbon Road bridge reopens

The Lisbon Road bridge in Morris reopened the day before Thanksgiving, returning convenience to motorists and pedestrians in the area.

The bridge crosses Interstate 80 and is known as the best route to Menards by some who wish to avoid Route 47.

It also connects Fields of Saratoga residents to the city more directly, as Lisbon Road heads south to downtown Morris.

The bridge’s two lanes each increased to 15 feet from the previously 11-foot-wide lanes. The Illinois Department of Transportation also had a sidewalk installed on one side of the bridge.

With increased traffic over the years, it became unsafe as pedestrians and bikers frequently had to cross the bridge in traffic lanes, according to residents.

In November, the Morris City Council voted to join in the project and extend sidewalk, curb, gutter and pavement work to the nearest north and south intersections on city land for $175,000.

Grundy County Republicans seek applicants to fill Galloway’s seat MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Party Central Committee has announced it will hold a caucus Jan. 9 of the Grundy County Republican Party precinct committee representatives for the voting precincts in Grundy County Board District 2.

According to a committee news release, the caucus is being held to nominate a successor to fill the office and complete the term of District 2 County Board member John Galloway, who recently resigned.

District 2 includes the following voting precincts: Aux Sable 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7; Nettle Creek; and Saratoga 2, 3 and 5.

Qualified Republican nominee applicants will be invited to make a presentation to the caucus.

Each applicant must confirm that he or she resides in the boundaries of District 2

prior to applying to be considered as the Republican nominee.

The nominee will be presented to Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter for consideration to fill the appointment.

Coal City looks forward to plans for 2016 COAL CITY – Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said the village will move forward in 2016 from rebuilding from the June 22 tornado to moving ahead with development that already was Terry planned. “ T h e q u e s - Halliday tion is how do we move forward from rebuilding? “We aren’t asking for help we don’t need,” Halliday said. “It’s not that I’m not understanding of what the state is going through with the budget, but I want Coal City to be at the front of the line when the budget is in place.”

Hall of Fame defensive end Doug Atkins dies at 85 The ASSOCIATED PRESS KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Doug Atkins, a defensive lineman who earned induction into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame, has died. He was 85.

Robert Shelton, a co-owner of Shelton-Hunt Funeral Home in Humboldt, Tennessee, said that Atkins died Wednesday morning of natural causes at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Atkins was a four-time allNFL selection who made eight Pro Bowl appearances during a 17-year NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.

His 6-foot-8 frame created major matchup problems for opponents.

“He was just a vicious pass rusher,” said Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka, a former Bears teammate. “He’d take the tackle all the way back to the quarterback and knock them both down, things like that.

He had a great wingspan. He just played the game hard. He played the game the way you were supposed to play it.”

Atkins wreaked havoc with his size.

“He looked like Michelangelo’s David physically,” said Bill Curry, a former NFL offensive lineman who played against Atkins. “That’s what he looked like. Just huge. He was perfectly proportioned. ... He was symmetrical, but he was just so much bigger and stronger than any of the rest of us.”

Atkins spent his first two seasons with the Browns, who selected him out of Tennessee with the 11th overall pick in the 1953 NFL Draft.

He was in Chicago from 1957-66 and with New Orleans from 1967-69. He was a part of NFL championship teams with Cleveland in 1954 and with Chicago in 1963.

“Doug Atkins is an all-time great who will be remembered as one of the pillars of the 1963 Championship Bears. He had a freakish combination of size

and athletic ability and was as tough as anyone who ever stepped on a football field,” Bears chairman George McCaskey said in a statement released by the team. “Doug wasn’t afraid to offer his opinion off the field as well and had a unique communication style when it came to interacting with Coach (George) Halas.

“He embodied the spirit and commitment of what it means to be a Bear. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Sylvia, and their family.”

G-SW rallies past Seneca for 7th at Marseilles tourney

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MARSEILLES – Scott Horrie and the Gardner-South Wilmington boys basketball team had a first half to forget and a second half to remember Wednesday at the Marseilles Holiday Tournament.

After picking up his third foul, Horrie sat the final 6-anda-half minutes of a scoreless first half and watched his Panthers fall behind Seneca by nine points at halftime.

His 20 second-half points, however, carried the Panthers to a 52-45 victory over the Fighting Irish in a seventh-place game.

“They had a pretty good defense, and I had two charges in the first half, so I was just trying to avoid that,” Horrie said.

“Maybe stop, take a couple 3s – which I did, made it. I was just careful on my drives – just kinda floated it up there, and they went in.”

Although the Irish endured 2-for-17 shooting in the third quarter, the Panthers (8-5) did not really take advantage initially due to their own offensive struggles.

That changed during a whirlwind final minute that featured two 3s and a driving basket from Horrie, along with an Alex Bunna transition basket.

Seneca’s eight-point lead had turned into the first G-SW lead of the game at 32-30.

“We asked Scott to kind of take over at that point in time and do some things that are not characteristic of us,” G-SW coach Chris Gibson said. “We kind of ran away from our sets a little bit, and ran a little more of just, ‘Hey, Scott, let’s go out and do something special,’ and he did some special stuff there at the end of that third quarter.”

Seneca finished 12-for-43 from the field and 5-for-23 from 3-point territory.

“We just gotta make shots, and what happened in the third quarter is we missed jumper after jumper after jumper,” Seneca coach Russell Witte said. “Now you get a little bit discouraged, and I thought for about a three-minute stretch, we stopped playing defense. We let the offensive end of the floor dictate what we did on the defensive side of the ball.”

Both coaches deemed it a bittersweet tournament. For Gibson, an opening-round upset of Hall Township and the comeback against Seneca were diminished somewhat by a second-round collapse against Putnam County.

Witte feels that, were it not for a few poor stretches, the Irish easily could have been 3-1 or 2-2 rather than settling for a first-round defeat of St. Benedict.

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent PLANO – Morris and Plano were tied at 58 with 9.1 seconds left in the first overtime of the 53rd annual Plano Christmas Classic consolation championship game on Wednesday.

The Reapers inbounded the ball to their leading scorer, Marcus Ramirez, who dribbled up court in nine seconds and released a floater in the lane that fell through the basket at the buzzer, resulting in heartbreak for Morris.

Final score: Plano 60, Morris 58 in overtime.

To make matters worse for Morris (6-7), with 3:40 remaining in regulation, it had a what it thought was an insurmountable 53-43 lead. But several turnovers in the fourth quarter allowed the Reapers to force overtime.

Ramirez (15 points) gave Plano its first lead of the day at 55-53, with 52 seconds left in regulation.

Morris’ 6-foot-4 sophomore Tyler Spiezio’s old-fashioned 3-point play regained the lead for his team at 56-55 with 28 second left.

“My teammates allowed me to have the good game that I had,” said Spiezio, who had 10 points and five rebounds. “We

just didn’t execute offensively in the fourth quarter. We are looking to improve in the second half of the season, one game at a time.”

With 9.1 second left, Jordan Miracle (16 points, three steals), came up with a huge steal and gave the ball to Matt Shaw, who was immediately fouled by the Reapers (7-6).

The foul was only Plano’s third of the half, resulting in three consecutive Morris inbound plays and Plano fouls, bringing the clock down to 3.2 seconds.

Plano’s Dahveed McKinney (8 points, four steals) stole the fourth inbounds pass and was fouled while shooting, with 1.2 seconds left in regulation. McKinney missed the first shot and made the second, sending the game into overtime – a tie at 56.

“This one really hurts,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “We just gave the game away. 2-2 in this tournament is not what we wanted to do.

We wanted to go 3-1 and improve to 7-6, for the first half of our season. The one major positive for us in this tournament, was the continual improvement of our sophomores, Spiezio and Aurelius Lennon-Rios.”

John Galsworthy, an English dramatist and playwright who died in 1933, said, “A man of action forced into a state of thought is unhappy until he can get out of it.”

At the bridge table, you must be a man or woman of thought before becoming a man or woman of action.

And if the thought process precedes accurate card-play, your opponents will be unhappy.

In this deal, how should South make his opponents unhappy? He is in three no-trump, and West leads the diamond queen.

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and four clubs.

A player of action would win the first or second diamond trick, cross to dummy by leading a low club to the 10, and take a major-suit finesse.

Declarer would win the next diamond, return to dummy with a club to the queen, and take the other major-suit finesse ... and here go down one.

Yes, that would be unlucky, but North would be unhappy with that line.

South should win the first trick and, strangely, cash his other high diamond.

If East discards, declarer should take his four club tricks, ending on the board, and decide which way to turn.

When East follows suit, though, South next cashes three club tricks, leaving a winner on the board, then exits with his last diamond.

If East wins the third diamond, South can still take both major-suit finesses; he hasn’t lost anything.

Here, though, West may cash three tricks in the suit, but must then unhappily lead away from one of his kings, conceding a ninth trick to declarer.

Invest in the right pillow to protect your neck while asleep Dear Dr. K: I tend to have a lot of neck pain.

Would it help to buy a special pillow, or make any other adjustments to the way I sleep?

Dear Reader: As with so many things, an ounce of prevention might be worth a pound of cure when it comes to neck pain.

And how you sleep at night can make a big difference.

Two sleeping positions are easiest on the neck: on your side or on your back.

Whichever you prefer, choose an appropriate pillow.

If you sleep on your back, choose a rounded pillow to support the natural curve of your neck, with a flatter pil-

You can achieve this by tucking a small neck roll into the pillowcase of a flatter, softer pillow. Or, use a special pillow that has a built-in neck support with an indentation for the head to rest in.

If you sleep on your side, use a pillow that is higher under your neck than your head. This will help to keep your spine straight.

Sleeping on your stomach is tough on your spine because the back is arched and your neck turned to the side.

Preferred sleeping positions often are set early in life and can be tough to change. (Not to mention we often wake up in a different position from the one we used to fall asleep.)

Still, it’s worth trying to start the night sleeping on your back or side in a well-supported, healthy position.

Feather pillows tend to easily conform to the shape of the neck.

They will collapse over time, however, and should be replaced every year or so.

Memory foam pillows come both in traditional shapes, and in what I call a double hump shape to support your neck.

Both types of pillows generally do a better job of conforming to the contour of your head and neck than older types of pillows (such as feather pillows or regular foam pillows).

Manufacturers of memory foam pillows claim they help promote proper spinal alignment. Avoid using too high or stiff a pillow. This keeps the neck flexed overnight and can result in morning pain and stiffness.

But we sleep not only in beds. Sometimes we sleep while riding in a plane, train or car. And who hasn’t dozed off while watching TV? In any of these circumstances, a horseshoe-shaped pillow can help.

It will support your neck and prevent your head from dropping to one side if you doze.

If the pillow is too large behind the neck, however, it will force your head forward.

We spend a third of our lives asleep in bed. Plus, the evidence is growing good quality sleep each night brings many health benefits.

For those reasons, I think it is worth investing in beds and pillows that give you the best quality sleep – including protecting your neck.

In this entry level role, as a Material Handler/Lumper, you will be responsible for loading and unloading tires manually. Your specific duties in this role will include, physically moving and lifting tires weighing as much as 70 pounds. Other duties may require operating material handling equipment.

Ability to move and lift various tire types and weights Must be reliable and safety-minded
