Flooding closes Grundy County roads

MORRIS – Melissa Pumphrey, of Mazon, loaded up three kids and headed out to work Tuesday just like any other day, but she didn’t get far.

As she left her rural Mazon home, she found water had overrun Old Mazon Road, so she turned around and went the other way – only to find more water.

“There was water going over the road, so we came back home,” she said in a phone interview Tuesday evening. “We don’t typically get flooded-in out here.”

She said that although water has gone over Grinter Road before, she’s always been able to take Old Mazon Road to Gardner Road to get into town.

“I wasn’t going to attempt it with three kids in the car,” she said.

As a Mazon volunteer firefighter, Pumphrey knows the dangers of water rushing over or sitting in a roadway.

Joe Schroeder, director of the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency, said he wishes more people would stay off flooded roads.

As of Tuesday evening, there were reports of more than 20 Grundy County roads with standing or moving water on them. Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District Deputy Chief Bob Wills said it takes very little water to push a car off the road.

The name of the driver has not been released, but he was from Kankakee and was on his way home from work at the Pontiac Correctional Center when the incident occurred, according to Dyer.

Dyer said an airplane was called in to aid in the search

while fire district personnel searched the banks and surrounding residences.

Dyer said the search was called off Tuesday evening and will resume Wednesday morning with the help of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Video games aren’t often associated with a libraries, but a teen program at the Morris Area Public Library is breaking away from that stereotype.

Once a month, the Morris library hosts “Press Start Gaming,” an interactive video gaming session with small prizes, snacks and drinks to encourage teens out of the house, away from reality and into the physical world with others like them.

From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, four Morris Community High School students – Abby and Mykayla Schlappi, Dyllan Pacheco and Ean Silva – were in the library auditorium engaged in friendly games of Just Dance 2015.

“I like it because it’s fun, with good people,” Pacheco said. “And it’s better than sitting at home.”

The program started almost a year ago, Morris library teen coordinator Rose Nowak said, when she asked teens what other programs they’d like to see. They requested a video gaming program.

By MIKE MALLORY MINOOKA – Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan remembers hearing in 2002, when he became a village trustee, about the prospects of a hotel in Minooka.

On Dec. 21, that possibility became a reality, as Hampton Inn & Suites opened at 621 Bob Blair Road. Construction began in October 2014. The hotel is expected to bring a new hotel-based tax to the village.

“It’s early to say how much it’ll bring in, but when it does come, it’ll be a nice boost,” Brennan said.

The hotel takes up two of nine lots in the development it’s housed in, and likely will be the anchor of the property. Minooka hopes to fill out the remaining seven lots with more businesses.

The development’s property owners have mentioned restaurants as candidates to use the remaining space, but Brennan expects all interested parties to wait about a year to see how the

“As we get the property filled out, it’s going to be a very nice tax base for the people of Minooka,” Brennan said.

The family-owned company that developed the hotel is from Iowa and this is its first location in Illinois. Brennan said he has heard Hilton, Hampton Inn & Suites’ parent company, may be interested in two lots across the street.

Nearby warehouse occupants, such as Grainger and Trader Joe’s, are glad the hotel came to fruition because it gives executives a place to stay when they have meetings in Minooka, Brennan said. Previously, the nearest hotels were in Morris and Joliet.

“Corporate folks come to visit Grundy County, and sometimes they don’t have a place to stay,” Grundy Economic Development Council CEO Nancy Norton Ammer said. “This is a very nice option for business people.”

can provide lodging for traveling tradespeople who will work on forthcoming projects, such as LyondellBasell’s large maintenance outage.

While the village hopes for further development, area businesses already are appreciative.

Brennan said KFC, which is adjacent to the hotel, and others have served hotel customers since it opened.

“Everyone’s happy,” he said.

The hotel’s tax incentive package, agreed on in May 2014, includes a three-year, 50 percent real estate tax abatement equaling about $240,000; waiver of village building permit fees between $15,000 and $25,000; and a 90 percent rebate of the hotel tax for 10 years or until the total incentive package, including tax rebates and fee waivers, totals $1.5 million, whichever comes first.

Minooka once had a hotel on the north side of Interstate 80, but it fell out of use and eventually was demolished more than 10 years ago.

The more recent incident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Dec. 18 near Division Street and Route 129 in Braceville, according to a Crimestop-

The earlier burglary took place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Dec. 11 near Route 53 and Washington Street in Gardner, the release stated.

The offenders forced the rear entrance and took electronics, jewelry, cash, a handgun and

Obviously a big projector screen is better than a TV.” It started with a Nintendo Wii console system, she said, but the library obtained an Xbox 360 in August. She said the teens seem to prefer Wii games, but others are available to play for both platforms.

“We kind of let them choose democratically what they’re going to play,” Nowak said.

“We do tournament-style play when we have larger groups.”

The program usually is after school at about 4:30 p.m.

The next session is scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m. Jan. 26.

The group voiced appreciation Tuesday for being able to get out of the house in winter break. They said it’s nice to escape reality and play a fictional character in a virtual world.

“You don’t have to worry about real life,” Mykayla Schlappi said.

Video games give you the power to do things you can’t in daily life, such as becoming a character on Super Smash Bros., such as Mario, Luigi, Zelda or Pikachu, Pacheco said.

But Tuesday, the group was focused on dancing, competing for the top score.

“I can’t dance, but I follow the directions in Just Dance and feel like I can,” Pacheco said.

Up to 12 people can participate in a “Press Start” session.

On some afternoons, more people attend than the four showed up Tuesday. Participants said they have the best time when people just come to have fun and don’t worry about winning.

“There are players who have no self-control, eat all the snacks and get mad if they lose,” Mykayla Schlappi said.

Pacheco said there needs to be a certain maturity level when competing in a public setting.

“I couldn’t care less if I win

or lose,” she said. “I’m here to have fun with friends.”

Road construction, commercial development set for Channahon

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Although Route 6 at Interstate 55 saw construction for most of 2015, Channahon Village President Missey Schumacher felt residents weren’t overly inconvenienced when traffic slowed down on the village’s main thoroughfare.

“Unfortunately, as the project continues this year, there will be Missey more of an im- Schumacher pact when lanes are blocked and it’s on schedule to go into 2017,” she said.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is replacing the bridge deck of Route 6 over I-55 and putting two lanes and a middle turn lane in both directions. The frontage roads also are being rerouted.

“The northwest entrance will be farther west and match up with where the southwest frontage road comes out behind the McDonald’s,” Schumacher explained.

A Thornton’s gas station will be constructed on the northwest corner and adjacent space could be developed for a restaurant or retail business visible from I-55.

According to IDOT, $10.8

million is expected to be spent in 2016 on engineering and construction projects at the interchange.

Schumacher noted home construction in the village has seen a slight upswing after being dormant for several years.

Channahon issued 22 house building permits in 2015, twice as many as the year before.

“This is definitely an upand-coming area that’s seeing more building. It’s close to the interstate and has great schools, which [attracts] a lot of families,” said area real estate agent Julie McElyea.

McElyea and her husband, Joe McElyea, will open a RE/ MAX Hometown Properties office in mid-January on Pheasant Lane.

“We’ve seen a lot of the agents that service the Channahon-Minooka area are not based here, so we hope having an office here will benefit our customers,” she said.

The village also has annexed property on the northeast side of I-55 at Bluff Road where a 2 million-square-foot warehouse will be constructed beginning in the spring.

“It’s a farm field right now, so we’ll broaden our tax base without adding any kids to the school district,” Schumacher said.

The developer will pay all real estate taxes, which 11 taxing bodies have agreed to rebate back to the village to pay off the bonds that will be issued for the project, according to Schumacher.

“We want the business, but I have drawn a pretty hard line on truck traffic and where they can go,” Schumacher said. “I know that’s been a concern for many residents so any [construction or development] will keep them on the roads that are designed for them.”

The mayor also said village staff continue to try to bring a grocery store to Channahon, but no deals have been reached.

The village’s longtime family restaurant, Lone Star, remains closed after a fire in October. Schumacher said the owners informed the village they are negotiating with their insurance company and plan to reopen in 2016.

of Public Health (IDPH) has awarded OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center with renewal of its Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) status.

LEONORA E. WALKER Leonora E. Walker, age 91, of Mazon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehab in Morris. after a very full life blessed with faith, family, and friends.

Lee (Leo to her siblings) was born on March 11, 1924, in Seneca. She was the daughter of Petra Nordtvedt Espevik and Lars Andreas Larsen Espevik of Nedstrand, Norway who immigrated to America in 1908. After Petra arrived in 1910, they were married in North Dakota in 1911.

Educated in Newark schools, Lee graduated with the class of 1941.

Lee married Ollie Lazenby Walker, Jr. on Oct. 3, 1942, on her family’s farm. Married for over 60 years, Ollie died on June 23, 2003.

She was active all her life in the activities at Park Street Congregational Church in Mazon. She retired in 1989 as a Trust Officer for Mazon State Bank. She was an amazing baker and cook, providing countless meals for church functions. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and even prouder of her beloved siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

T

he transformation of a handful of ingredients into a no-cook, multi-layered confection that looks like something from a Viennese pastry kitchen seems almost miraculous. When you need a quick make-ahead dessert that’s light and cool and creamy and impressive, look no further than a carton of cream and a package of cookies.

And in this cake, store-bought lemon curd adds lots of lemon flavor without a lot of fuss.

Impress your guests with an icebox dessert

Lemon Raspberry Icebox Cake To assemble the cake, use a long-handled, wide rubber spatula for folding in the cream and spreading it over the layers.

Ingredients: 1 (10-ounce) jar lemon curd (about 1 cup) 2 cups cold heavy cream ½ cup confectioners sugar 1⁄3 cup raspberry jam 12 full graham cracker sheets (48 crackers) 1 cup fresh raspberries Stir lemon curd with a rubber spatula in a large bowl until smooth and creamy.

Beat cream and sugar in another large bowl until soft peaks form.

Stir about one-quarter of the whipped cream into lemon curd.

Fold in remaining cream.

Line a 9-inch springform pan with plastic wrap. Spread a thin layer of lemon mixture on bottom of pan.

Spread a thin layer of jam on 16 crackers and arrange, jam sides up, in pan. Top with about one-third of remaining lemon mixture.

Repeat with two more layers of jam, crackers and lemon mixture, ending with lemon mixture. Arrange raspberries around top edge.

Refrigerate 5 hours to overnight.

Remove pan side. Gently lift cake by the plastic wrap to remove it from the pan bottom and peel away plastic wrap. Serves 14.

Then Minooka’s experience and toughness, earned by a group that has largely grown up together, kicked in.

The passes were hitting the right players on the inside and the baskets were coming. What impressed Indians coach Scott Tanaka in Minooka’s 52-38 victory over Providence wasn’t their end score or the Indians’ 59 percentage in shooting.

It was the 15 assists the Indians piled up.

“We just made baskets,” Tanaka said, oversimplifying slightly. “And the big guy did a great job of finishing, too.”

The “big guy” Tanaka referred to is Blake Parzych, a center with a scoring touch, for whom the more lithe Celtics had no match. But Parzych’s 10 points would have been fewer had not the Butler brothers – Jonny and Joe – been feeding him and others in the course of Minooka’s 37-point second half.

Each brother had four assists.

Providence had six assists for the game.

That chemistry was evident as the minutes clicked by. Providence played in bursts, but Minooka was steady. The Indians’ 8-3 run at the end of the third quarter wasn’t spectacular, but it was decisive, turning a 20-all deadlock into a 30-23 lead with eight minutes to go.

Minooka also owned the final quarter, a 22-15 advantage.

Joe Butler led Minooka with 13 points, with Jonny Butler adding 10. Larry Roberts’ 9 came on a trio of 3-pointers.

Those totals would have been unexpected at the half, when the score was tied at 15 and Minooka had made only six of 16

field-goal attempts.

Experience revealed itself Tuesday in contrast with Monday’s contest, in which Hinsdale South appeared to score the winning basket after time expired, only to have it count, negating overtime. Tuesday’s success also earned the Indians (8-4) a game against Lake

Forest, while Providence (3-8) moves against Stagg.

Behind nine points from Ryan Atilano, the Cavaliers (90) opened the game on a 17-5 run. Two baskets by Steve McGrath out of a timeout allowed the Norsemen (11-2) to close back within single digits, but they were able only to keep it in that range for the remainder of the half.

Newark needed a last-second Jack Clausel basket – his first points of the game – to end the first quarter within 21-13.

It then went nearly 2:30 without scoring to begin the second

half, a drought ended by two Clausel free throws. Newark began going inside to Clausel more late in the quarter, with the result a pair of short baskets, but was still down, 31-21, at halftime.

Twice Cameron Myre scored easy fast-break layups off of Newark steals, which combined with two free throws and a cutting layup from Evan Schomer, allowed the Norsemen to get within 33-29.

But Atilano answered with a quick layup turned conventional 3-point play the other

way. He had another quick layup after Will Clausel scored on the other end as the Cavaliers closed the third on a 12-4 lead to restore their lead to 12 points.

L-P held a lead as large as 50-35 and a lead of 11 points as late as the 2:24 mark of the fourth quarter before Newark ground down its deficit the rest of the way.

A real glimmer of hope appeared when Will Clausel made three free throws to make it a 57-51 game with 58 seconds showing, but three

late free throws from Austin Prybylinski helped L-P hold on.

Jack Clausel scored 15 points for Newark. Will Clausel scored 10 points in the final two minutes alone as part of his 14 parts.

The loss ensures that Newark will remain tied with Seneca for the most all-time Classic championships with four. Newark last won the tournament in 1992 and was last in the championship in 2010, when it finished second to Rockford Christian.

That, unfortunately, applies to many bridge partnerships. When one player errs, his or her partner cannot wait to point it out.

However, if you realize that a mistake has been made by partner or you, do not get distracted. Keep concentrating and do not make a second slip that lets a beatable contract succeed.

In this deal, East must keep his eye on the cards. Yes, it is the same layout as yesterday’s, but it features a second important defensive point.

South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond king and continues with the diamond jack. East, thinking that his partner had started with a doubleton, overtakes with his ace and returns the suit to West’s queen. West exits with a spade. What should happen after that?

When North uncovered the 4-4 heart fit, he happily jumped to game.

South has to play the trump suit without loss.

He wins the spade shift in his hand with the ace and plays a heart to dummy’s jack. If both opponents follow low, declarer will cash dummy’s ace and be happy when West’s king drops.

In fact the percentage play for South is to run the heart eight on the second round of the suit, but here the king appears and his troubles are over.

Catholic hospitals value lives of mother and child Dear Abby: You printed a letter from a woman (Nov. 25) whose husband told her while she was pregnant that, if it came to a choice, he would choose the life of the baby over hers.

Your response contained a piece of misinformation I would appreciate you correcting for your readers.

You asserted that it is Catholic policy to save the life of the baby over the mother in obstetrical emergencies.

Abby, that is one of the oldest but most persistent pieces of misinformation out there!

This inaccurate statement has been replayed even in movies in spite of repeated denials by Catholic hospitals and the professionals who

The fact is: Catholic policy is abundantly clear on the dignity of both mother and baby, and makes no priority of one over the other.

Catholic hospitals operate with the same standards of safety in maternity care and are inspected by the same organizations that inspect non-Catholic maternity programs such as the Joint Commission and the licensing agency of each state.

Catholic hospitals must adhere to the same robust

standards as every other maternity service in the country.

I would appreciate it if you could assure your readers that, while this makes for good movies and novels, it is not the Catholic position.

The dignity of the life of both mother and baby are critically important to all those serving in Catholic health care.

About the only time such an issue could arise in contemporary America would be in the rare case of a pregnant woman who is discovered to have an aggressive cancer,
