Born: July 22, 1931; in Ft. Sheridan, IL Died: Dec. 22, 2014; in West Palm Beach, FL Betty L. Workman, age 83, formerly of Morris, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2014, in Moreslife Rehabilitation Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. She was born in Ft. Sheridan, Illinois on July 22, 1931.

She and her husband, Sherman Workman, Sr., who preceded her in death on April 17, 1986, raised their four children in Morris.

Surviving are their children, Sherman, Jr. (Marlene), Timothy (Joan), Vicki (Don Jennings), all of Morris, and Jeffrey, who resides in China; and her grandchildren, Jamie, Sherman (Katie), Erin Dolwick (Brian), Jordan, Tim (Jenn), Jessica Walrath (Josh) and Matthew. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren; her sisters, Pallie Finchum of Red Bluff, CA and Ruth Braniff of Los Banos, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by Faye Harlow and her grandson, Chuck, who have been very special friends to her for many years.

Betty liked to play cards, bingo, and enjoyed the exercise program she lead at her neighborhood pool in West Palm Beach. She loved watching the Miami Marlins, and still followed the Chicago Cubs. She and her husband were members of the Morris Country Club, and enjoyed golfing and spending time with all of their friends there, while they lived in Morris. She was employed

at Humiston Keeling and Lincoln Nursing Homes in Morris, in their food services.

A Memorial Service will be held at The First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Jackson St., Morris, on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to PACE, 2847 Fred Gladstone Dr., West Palm Beach, FL 33417, in Betty’s name.

Betty attended the PACE program that helps the elderly stay in their own homes by assisting with their needs.

Born: May 30, 1929; in Diamond, IL Died: Dec. 29, 2014; in Dwight, IL Geraldine R. Favero, age 85, of Braidwood, IL, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014, at Heritage Health in Dwight, IL. Born May 30, 1929, in Diamond, IL to the late Domenic and Anna (nee Schimmel) Favero. Geraldine was previously employed at Grinchuck Pants Factory in Braidwood for 20 years and also Jemco in Wilmington, IL for 20 years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Santa’s Helpers, both in Braidwood. Geraldine was a self taught avid sewer and also enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are one brother, Domenic Favero of Braidwood; special nephew and nieces, Scott and Tami Favero of Braidwood and Darlene

Jaros of Lyons, IL; and several other nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, Paul Favero, Lewis Favero, and Francis Favero; and two sisters, Helen Favero and Josephine Favero.

Visitation will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd. & Crematory, Braidwood Chapel, Wednesday, December 31, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Graveside committal services will follow with Rev. Steve Bondi officiating. He married Jane Olson on December 9, 1972, in Gardner. They lived all of their married life in Morris.

Larry was employed for over 40 years at the Grundy County Nursing Home in the maintenance department.

He is survived by one daughter, Karen (Kevin) Leeds of Morris; one son, Larry Mehochko Jr. of Morris; one grandson, David Neushwander of Chicago; one granddaughter, Kaytlyn Neushwander of Chicago; one brother, David (Donna)Mehochko of Gardner; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his loving wife, Jane on January 28, 2008.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Morris.

Larry enjoyed working on his father’s farm, and was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She said you need to set realistic goals and write them down to hold yourself accountable.

The hardest part is to make both the diet and exercise a habit.

“After the first couple of workouts, you’re going to be tired, and maybe sore,” Cooper said. “Once you start going to the gym you need to make it part of your routine.”

He said it’s also important to make your workout fun, that way you don’t quit by February.

“The best thing you can do is just go to the gym, if you don’t get results quick enough

or get bored you may want to give up,” he said. “Working with a trainer we can keep it exciting. If you know five exercises to work on your arms, we may know 20 to keep you from getting bored.”

Both Cooper and Corsiglia said it’s important to find someone with the same goals as you so you can work toward the goals together, and you can hold one another accountable.

Cooper said a lot of clients ask him about diets, he said he can offer suggestions but would rather they seek a dietitian or nutritionist if they want a more specific diet.

MORRIS – With the new year comes resolutions – the firm decision to do something or not do something.

Many people start off the new year wanting to be healthier, to get in shape, or to lose weight. Often times that resolution goes by the way side for any number of reasons.

“It’s too hard,” “I’m not seeing enough progress,” or “There isn’t enough time,” are the excuses that personal trainer John Cooper of Morris hears most frequently.

“We all have the same 24 hours a day,” Cooper said.

“You need to do it for yourself, not for anyone else.”

Cooper said the first thing he advises is to sit down and talk about your goals and make the goals specific to yourself. He said not everyone has the same goals and not everyone will get there the same way.

Kara Corsiglia, a dietitian at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, agreed that making specific goals is the first step.

“You need to know what you want to do,” she said.

“Don’t just say I want to lose weight, set a number of pounds you want to lose and then decide how long it will take you to do it.”

Karen Nall, executive director with United Way of Grundy County, said there are many opportunities to give back in Grundy County.

“Volunteers grow from their first experience helping,” Nall said. “We don’t want to lose sight of the person who wants to give back.”

United Way keeps a list on its website, uwgrundy.org, of organizations who are in need of volunteers with information about what the need is for.

Nall said the organization keeps two data bases, one of volunteers and one of volunteer opportunities so that if something comes up she can combine those wishing to help with those who need it.

The list gives the information they have which includes if there is an age requirement, whether or not they offer community service for court or school and whether it’s a specific project or something ongoing.

“There is always volunteer opportunities whether or not they are on the list,” Nall said. “They are always free to call the United Way office to check.”

Corsiglia recommends people use the “My Plate” method which can be found online at ChooseMyPlate.gov . She said it’s basically one-fourth protein, one-fourth starches, and one-half fruits and vegetables, with a dairy product on the side for a well balanced meal.

“You want to get food from all food groups,” she said. “You just need portion control.”

In addition to setting realistic goals so you don’t give up, both advise rewarding yourself.

“It’s important to reward yourself as you meet a goal,” Corsiglia said. “Just reward yourself with a non-food item like a pedicure.”

They both said to expect to be human and make mistakes, the important thing is to not give up.

“The key is getting back on track,” Corsiglia said.

Red Kettle campaign raises $24K locally

MORRIS – It could have been the nice weather, or maybe people were just filled with a little more Christmas cheer this year – whatever the reason, The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign locally brought in the third largest amount in Grundy County history.

The Salvation Army’s National Red Kettle campaign raised $24,556 in Grundy County.

This total includes the three gold coins donated during the first week of the collection, which were worth $1,846. Morris Coin Shop owner Phil Anderson bought the coins for $2,000.

“It’s really nice, especially to bounce back after last year, which was the second worst [year] with the horrible weather, the cancellations as a result

and the shortest calendar,” said Denise Gaska, executive director for We Care of Grundy County.

The Salvation Army’s National Red Kettle campaign aims to raise money to provide toys for children, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry and social service programs year-round, according to its website. In Grundy County, We Care facilitates the Red Kettle campaign.

In return for facilitating it, 80 percent of all proceeds stay within the county and will be spent by We Care to help low-income families. We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

The campaign went from Nov. 28 to Dec. 22 this year and raised more than $4,000 more than last year. The highest year for donations was in 2012 with about $30,000 raised, Gas-

ka said, and 2011 followed with about $26,700 raised.

Multiple things affect the bell ringing campaign, she said, from the weather to the amount of days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Last year was the least amount of days in quite awhile.

“The Salvation Army actually plans for those years,” Gaska said. “They know the amount changes significantly due to the number of days.”

In addition to having more days this year to raise funds, the good weather played a key role, she said.

Missey Schumacher, a village trustee since 2013, was the only candidate to file a petition to replace Cook.

Schumacher previously was village clerk.

“I have yet to hear of anyone running as a write-in,” Missey Schumacher S c h u m a c h e r said Friday. “So I’m looking forward to getting started in May. It’s an exciting time, full of potential for the village.”

Schumacher would like for the village to promote retail and commercial development near the Route 6 interchange and industrial and warehouse development near Bluff Road.

“I love the small-town feel that we have. But villages have to grow or they die, so we have to be smart with where we put [development],” Schumacher said.

The mayoral candidate also said promoting Channahon’s parks and rivers for recreational use to attract more visitors will spur retail development.

CHANNAHON – An improving economy in 2015 could bring new development to Channahon.

“I’m more optimistic this year will have more development than 2014,” Village Administrator Thomas Durkin said. “We’re seeing signs the economy is slowly improving and want to get ourselves in a position to attract development where it left off [in the recession].”

Durkin plans a “housing summit” early this year to offer information on available lots and review impact fees and building permits. Some residential developments have lots platted and “ready,” while others shut down before putting any infrastructure in place.

“I want to see if what we approved six or seven years ago is still viable,” Durkin said of both residential and commercial projects. Village staff also will discuss ways to help existing businesses.

“Not how to run a business, but repairs to the physical infrastructure, for example. We have to ask can and should the village do that,” Durkin said.

In 2014, the village approved a TIF district near the Route 6 and Interstate 55 interchange.

About 15 acres are being developed on the north side and Durkin hopes the growth will spread as a $22 million Illinois Department of Transportation project gets underway.

Starting in 2015, IDOT will replace the bridge deck of Route 6 over the highway, put two lanes and a middle turn lane in both directions and relocate the frontage road.

“I’m pretty sure we have never had such a warm month,” she said.

With the donation of the three gold coins during the First United Methodist Church of Morris volunteer days again, the church volunteers attained the largest collection of any organization participating with $3,575.

The church rang bells every Monday night during the campaign.

The biggest one-day collection this year, which also was the second largest one-day total in Grundy County history, was Dec. 20 with $1,939. The bells that day were manned by

In addition to local organizations, individual volunteers ring bells, as well. The individual volunteers totaled $3,792 this year.

A couple of those individuals included Gloria and Rollin Varness of Morris, who happened to be ringing the day Christopher Kennedy, the new Salvation Army director of development, came to Morris to ring. He brought his baritone, and the Varness family sang along with him.

“That night people got quite a show,” Gaska said.

Doris Marie Severson, 84, of rural Sheridan died Sunday, December 28, 2014, at Seasons Hospice in Naperville.

Marie was born October 2, 1930, in Millington to Floyd E. & Hazel M. (Mauck) Hilliard. She married Earl E. Severson November 18, 1950, at the 1st Lutheran Church in Plano.

She was a member of the Millington United Methodist Church, had worked as a nurses aid at the Sandwich Hospital OB department and was a member of the Newark American Legion Post #459 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Earl Severson; her two daughters, Marcia (Olin) Fite of Round Rock, TX, Ruth (William) Hartline of Newark; her son, Owen (Beverly) Severson of Sheridan; nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Brimberry, Sarah Fite, Thomas Fite, Michael Fite all of TX, Emily (Kyle) Hartline-Lewis of Roylton, IL, Mary (James) Shannon of Serena, Jeffrey Severson of Somonauk, David Severson of Sandwich, Jill (Dave) Ashton of Ottawa and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Marine Corporal Joseph Fite; and her brother, Charles E. Hilliard.

PLANO – Going into a quarterfinal matchup against a redhot Burlington Central club in the Plano Christmas Classic, Morris boys basketball coach Joe Blumberg wasn’t sure what to expect on Saturday night.

There was a chance that after Austin Patterson’s 26-point performance on Friday night in an otherwise off night offensively that Burlington Central would mix in some box-andone to stop the talented senior.

But, a more balanced night offensively by the Redskins kept the Rockets in a man-to-man defense as Morris advanced to the semifinals with a dominant 56-36 victory.

Morris had four of their five starters in double-figures on the night. Center Griffin Sobol led the way with 14 points, Jake Walker chipped in 12, Evan Bjelland had 11 and Austin Patterson had 10. The fifth Morris starter, junior Jake Jurasits added seven points on the night.

“I thought we executed well tonight,” Blumberg said. “I think the box-and-one or diamond-and-one was probably in their back pocket somewhere, but when Walker is hitting shots and [Bjelland] is hitting shots it’s tough to run that.

“Our balance took the pressure off [Patterson] tonight and that’s always nice.”

“They pushed us off our spots, they were more physical and they crashed the glass harder,” Burlington Central coach Brett Porto said. “They completely outplayed us in every facet of the game and at the

end we were just trying to find a couple people that wanted to play the game.”

And after Burlington Central his 11 of their first 12 shots against Kaneland on Friday, Morris managed to hold the Rockets to 29 percent shooting on the night.

“I thought we defended ball screens and other than a few instances in the second half, I can’t think of an awful lot of second and third-chance opportunities that they had,” Blumberg said.

The win moves Morris to 7-3 on the season. They played Mendota on Monday night at 8:30, a game that started after press time.

Clausel, his brother Will (a lengthy swing man) and forward Evan Schomer combined for 48 of Newark’s 56 points.

“It was great that we were able to take full advantage of

our size,” Schomer said after his 24-point, 11-rebound effort.

“We didn’t hit as many shots as we would have liked, but we were able to clean up our misses and get some second chance points out there.”

On the night, Newark hit on 48 percent of their shots from the field while holding St. Bede to just 31 percent shooting.

They also held St. Bede’s star guard Jarret Olson to an 8-for22 night from the field.

“He was definitely a point of emphasis,” Newark head coach Rick Tollefson said. “We had Karter [Kunkel] running at him and every time he would go to set a screen we would try to switch back as soon as we could. He’s a good player.”

EMERY, TRESTMAN NEVER HAD A CHANCE BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The firings of Phil Emery and Marc Trestman are regrettable mostly because neither one ever really had a chance.

While the world knows the story now of how Emery basically chased Bruce Arians away while casting his lot with Trestman, thus sealing his fate, the truth is he’s a very good scout who wasn’t close to ready for a GM job.

When the Bears were searching for a GM three years ago, other clubs were looking too. Emery wasn’t on any other clubs’ lists.

As much as Emery prided himself on the thoroughness of his head coaching search, it shouldn’t have taken him more than an hour or two to know Trestman shouldn’t have been an option.

The last straw for Emery, of course, was the bizarre decision to reward Cutler with a franchise quarterback’s contract when he had done nothing on the field to earn it. The availability of the franchise tag left the Bears with no risk at all of losing him, and for the same or less money than they gave him without guaranteeing any of it more than 1/3 of the total per year.

The still open questions about his drafting and ridiculous stubbornness in forcing Shea McClellin on to the field are footnotes to his two main failings.

Emery was fired Monday. find a single NFL source, insider or analyst who didn’t question his ability to handle a locker room.

So how did that work out?

There was never a moment to believe Trestman and Cutler were a good match personality wise, and minimal research proved Trestman was a knowledgeable offensive mind but far, far from a master.

Equally disturbing about the Trest-

man hire was the way he divorced himself from the defense. He actually convinced segments of Bears Nation that it could win with mediocre defense at best.

Under Trestman, the Bears have fielded one of the worst defenses in the league in successive seasons, an affront to any savvy NFL watcher.

Between them, Emery and Trestman inherited a 10-6 team, turned it into one

of the worst in the league, and made the NFL’s most storied franchise a laughing stock.

Congratulations to the McCaskey family for acknowledging its mistake and not insisting on wasting another season. Sticking with Emery and Trestman would have made the situation worse.

The problem now is two-fold. First, it is critical that Ted Phillips, the principal

architect of this mess, be kept completely out of the football side of the operation, specifically the hiring of the new GM and coach.

Most importantly, the new general manager should not come from within the organization or have any ties to the Bears last 25-plus years of dysfunction.

Rewarding their familiarity with Emery is what got the Bears into this mess in

the first place.

There is a ton of bright young talent out there ready and dying to take on the challenge of the Bears. Bears fans have to hope George McCaskey knows how to find it.

Hours after firing general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman after a disappointing 5-11 season, the Bears announced Monday they were hiring a longtime NFL executive to help in their search for Emery’s and Trestman’s replacements.

At a late afternoon news conference, Chairman George McCaskey and President Ted Phillips said Ernie Accorsi, former general manager of the Colts, Browns Ernie and Giants, would Accorsi consult with the team during the search.

“We are going to proceed with a sense of urgency,” Phillips said.

Emery spent three years as Bears GM. Two of his biggest decisions, the hiring of Trestman and the $126.7 million contract extension granted to quarterback Jay Cutler last offseason, have been widely criticized and likely contributed to his downfall.

Trestman took over a 10-6 team two years ago. He finished 8-8 in his first season, 13-19 overall.

stood on the table for me prior to the draft last year,” said offensive lineman Kyle Long, who has been to two Pro Bowls since many NFL observers thought selecting him with the 20th overall pick in 2013 was a reach by Emery. “There weren’t many people that did that around the league, so I’m just going to continue to try and be the best player I can be, continue to progress, continue to play for those guys. I know that for sure.”

Cornerback Tim Jennings said the new coach, whoever that might be, needs to focus on defense.

“It’s all about the backbone of the defense,” Jennings said.

“Coaches, yes, they coach, but you’ve got to have the players to make those kind of plays. When you think of the Chicago Bears, you think of Chicago defense and you’ve kind of got to get back to that. We didn’t have that foundation these past couple of years, and you’ve kind of got to get back to that.”

McCaskey said the 2014 season was unacceptable and added that the Bears want to compete for an NFL championship in 2015.

The Redskins went 2-1, defeating Morton 42-38 and Rock Island Alleman 59-18 and losing a Northern Illinois Big XII crossover match with Sterling, 47-19.

“The right coach for Chicago is one that wants to instill an identity, demands a team that has an identity, and when we play opponents, they should say, ‘We don’t want to play those guys,’ ” Long said.

“There’s a handful of teams in the NFL that are like that and I feel like we have the nucleus to be able to do that. We haven’t done that, and that’s something that we need to do.”

LAKE FOREST – Kyle Long received his first shot in the NFL because of Marc Trestman and Phil Emery. Martellus Bennett’s two most productive seasons were overseen by the now-former Bears regime.

Thus, while neither appeared surprised when talking with the media at Halas Hall after learning their former bosses received pink slips on “Black Monday,” both expressed gratitude for the role both the former Bears coach and general manager played in their respective success.

Unfortunately, instead of replicating the impressive growth of Long and Bennett, many of their offensive teammates regressed, playing a big role in Monday’s house cleaning.

When the time arrived to weigh in on what type of coach would be a good fit for the Bears locker room, Bennett joked, “one that likes me,” before explaining that he thinks there are a multitude of philosophies and coaching styles that have led to success in the NFL. Long, one of the more vo-

No Child Left Behind needs major overhaul The federal No Child Left Behind law has done a lot of leaving behind in its 12-year run. The law is long overdue for Congress to overhaul it and rid schools of its burden.

Lawmakers hailed the law as a bipartisan triumph when President George W. Bush signed it into law in 2001 as a reauthorization of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The law now needs a hefty revival of bipartisan collaboration to amend it.

No Child Left Behind’s core concept involves mandating measurable student progress year after year until all students in a school reach or exceed proficiency in math and English.

The goal of no longer passing students from grade to grade, regardless of their educational achievement, resonated with lawmakers. Problems surfaced, however, in the execution.

The law relies on test scores to measure progress and punitive consequences for schools that didn’t meet “adequate yearly progress” – such as losing control of federal funding or having to send letters to parents informing them their child’s school is failing.

Another challenge is that different states and school districts have their own definitions of “proficient.”

The education department created a waiver system to give some states relief from the law’s penalties.

Washington was granted a waiver. Earlier this year, the department revoked the waiver after state lawmakers refused to make test scores a component of teacher evaluations, a federal requirement.

After Washington lost its waiver, about 92 percent of schools were deemed “failing.” As a result, the federal government took away local control of 20 percent of the state’s Title I funds, or about $40 million.

Few, if any, members of Congress think the law works for any state, but agreeing on how to fix it is the main hurdle, said U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.

“There are a million people who have a pet interest in the bill,” Murray said.

She recently became the ranking Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee. She sought the position because she says it puts her in position to broker a deal to pass a revised law.

Congress has not reauthorized the law since 2007.

Last year, the HELP committee passed a revision, but the bill never made it to the Senate floor for a vote.

Areas of contention include deciding on school standards, the right mix of federal and state control, and flexibility in implementation.

After more than a decade, lawmakers should learn from past mistakes and ensure better education for the nation’s students.

hen some people hear the term “light-year,” they mistakenly believe it is a measurement of time.

A light-year is actually a unit of measurement that represents how far light travels in one year. Light-years are used to describe the almost unimaginably vast distances between stars, galaxies and other objects in our universe.

In the early 1600s, Galileo attempted, and failed, to measure the speed of light.

Our Milky Way Galaxy is about 100,000 light-years in diameter.

The farthest objects that astronomers can detect in our universe are nearly 13 billion light-years away.

In the 1670s, Dutch astronomer Olaus Roemer calculated the speed of light using observations of Jupiter’s moons. His calculations were slightly lower than the known speed of light.

How did the alien feel after traveling at the speed of light?

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are advising adults age 65 and older to get a second vaccine to prevent bacterial pneumonia.

The second vaccine, PCV13 (Prevnar 13), is expected to prevent many additional cases of pneumonia.

The PCV13 vaccine is not

“new.” It has been included in childhood vaccinations for several years. But it is new for adults.

The CDC recommends a single dose of PCV13 for anyone who is older than 65. If you have the option, the CDC says it is best to get the PCV13 before the PPSV23. If you are getting the PCV13 first, wait a year between the two vaccines. If, as in your case, you have already received the PPSV23 vaccine, you can still get the PCV13 vaccine.

Vaccines are important for avoiding infection. But these vaccines protect only against specific bacteria. There are many other things you can, and should, do to reduce your risk

of catching pneumonia caused by other bacteria and viruses.

These measures will also protect you against a cold, the flu and many other infections.

The best way to protect yourself from infection is to wash your hands often with soap and warm water. Rub your hands together for a full 20 seconds. If you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Stay away from people you know are sick. If you are sick, stay home to avoid infecting others. At home, avoid kissing, hugging and sharing utensils with someone who is unwell.

When I caught pneumonia due to pneumococcus, I hadn’t received the vaccine -- because

I was not old enough. I was feeling great when I went to bed.

When I got up the next morning, however, I felt very tired.

When I looked in the mirror, I looked white as a ghost. I felt hot and had a high fever. I took myself to the emergency room and my blood pressure was very low: I was in shock.

Fortunately, prompt treatment turned me around and I was back in action a few days later. But I came close to dying.

When it came time for me to get the vaccine, I surely did. I don’t want that to happen ever again.
