National Weather Service: Flooding expected in Grundy

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Waters are on the rise in Grundy County with the Illinois, Mazon and Kankakee rivers all expected to hit flood stage between Monday night and Friday.

The National Weather Service in Romeoville has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for rain and snowmelt in Grundy County.

According to the NWS, the Illinois River was expected to rise above flood stage by early Tuesday and continue to rise to near 20.5 feet by early Wednesday morning.

Stratton Park in Morris closed Monday due to flooding. At 21 feet flooding begins at the Morris Public Works area.

“We’re keeping a close eye on the river level and we are prepared to evacuate the Public Works building if we need to,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

The Grundy County Emergency Management Agency was monitoring and sending alerts out through its phone app Monday to residents in Grundy County.

“We’re still concerned about winds. The highest gust we’ve had so far was 42 miles per hour,” Director Joe Schroeder said Monday evening.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Many new laws go into effect Jan. 1, but one new law requiring police to both carry and receive training on how to administer naloxone hydrochloride – often referred to as Narcan – won’t go in effect until March.

Naloxone hydrochloride, an opioid antagonist, is a syn-

thetic congener of oxymorphone – it is used to save the life of a person who is suffering from opioid overdose.

Coal City firefighter and paramedic Brandon LeRoy, who has used the drug when responding to overdoses, said the drug works by blocking the effect of the opioids on the brain receptors.

“When you are called out and find a person with a coma

of unknown origin and their respirations are low and there is an indication it may be an opioid overdose, naloxone is administered as part of our protocol,” LeRoy said. “If it is an overdose, you start seeing the desired effects almost immediately, like increased respirations.”

He said the only downfall to the drug is as the patient starts to wake up they are hit

with some adverse effects, often found when a person is detoxing off of the drug, such as vomiting, agitation and combative behavior.

He said the medication, which comes in 2-milliliter doses, is very easy to administer, even for nonmedical personnel.

It can be delivered several ways, but the way most local police departments are inter-

ested in training for is by nasal spray.

“You can administer it in an IV, or like a shot,” he said. “But you can also do it intranasally, which is just as effective.”

Police departments in Grundy County are preparing now for when the requirement goes into effect.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Internal Revenue Service announced last week the nation’s tax season will begin as scheduled on Jan. 19, 2016.

“We look forward to opening the 2016 tax season on time,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in an IRS news release.

“Our employees have been working hard throughout this year to make this happen.”

The IRS will begin accepting individual electronic and paper tax returns Jan. 19, and expects to receive more than 150 million individual returns in 2016.

The IRS estimated in the release more than 80 percent of returns will be prepared electronically and then e-filed.

There is no advantage to filing tax returns on paper in early January instead of waiting for e-file to begin, the release stated.

Illinois has not yet announced its state tax return acceptance date.

“It’s the same as submitting a piece of paper, but it’s not touched by a bunch of people,” Brandt said.

No matter which option taxpayers choose, Brandt said, they should make sure all tax documents are ready before filing – whether filing is done individually or with a professional. This includes Form W-2s, Form 1099s and more.

Having all documents ready can prevent the need to file an amendment at a later date.

Brandt said filing early allows

taxpayers time to find information they may not have known to be necessary. This becomes even more crucial as the April 18, 2016 filing deadline nears.

“The earlier you file, the earlier you will get your tax bill,” Brandt said. “You can then pay it earlier. If you don’t pay taxes by the deadline, you will have a late payment fee.”

It’s important to note, Brandt said, that if taxpayers have to file an extension, it does not mean the payment deadline is extended.

For example, if a taxpayer visits a professional in April and needs to file a six-month extension, they’ll still have to pay,

by April 18, what the preparer estimates is needed.

Preparers often estimate a payment larger than necessary to be safe, Brandt said. That way, the IRS or state receives what they are owed on time and the preparer can then file for a refund and get the difference back to the taxpayer.

Gardner starts, progresses local projects

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Village of Gardner officials are focused on the completion of water and sewer improvement projects in 2016.

Of utmost importance in the new year, Gardner Mayor Mike Serena Mike Serena said, is to complete phase one of the village’s storm sewer replacement project.

The village began phase one in 2015 because sections of red clay tiles in the storm sewers are unable to handle the drainage of water and create standing water in certain areas of town during heavy rains.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” Serena said. “We broke it into

phases, beginning with the engineering phase in 2014.”

The first phase was estimated to cost between $400,000 and $450,000, but Finance Commissioner Dick Hileman said the project wound up being closer to $850,000.

Serena said he believes it was because of a permitting glitch or Dick Hileman m i s c o m m u n i cation with the state and no fault of the village or contractor.

Because of the increased cost, Serena said the village will postpone the next phase to 2017. Hileman said the village is replacing five storm sewers, one a year, at a cost of $500,000 to $600,000 each. Hileman expects the total project cost to come to about $3 million.

Joseph Imesch was pioneer of women’s, gay rights within the church setting

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The body of Bishop Joseph Imesch will be laid to rest Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet.

Imesch will lie in state from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the cathedral, 604 N. Raynor Ave., Diocese of Joliet Director of Communications Edward Flavin said in a statement. The Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery, 200 W. Romeo Road.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Fred C. Dames Funeral Homes.

Imesch died last week after serving 27 years as the third bishop of the Diocese of Joliet.

He retired in 2006 at age 75, but had been serving as bishop

emeritus up to his death.

Imesch was born June 21, 1931, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, as the second son of immigrant Swiss parents, according to his obituary.

He attended parish elementary school and went to high school and college at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit.

Imesch earned a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in Rome during the 1950s and completed his studies in 1970 at Gregorian University in Rome.

He first served after ordination at St. Charles Parish in Detroit as associate pastor and secretary. He was named pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Farmington, Michigan, where he served from 1971 to 1977, during which he was named regional bishop of northwest Detroit.

Joliet bishop’s funeral ceremonies set for Tuesday

Ex-Globetrotters star Meadowlark Lemon dies

By JOHN MARSHALL The Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Meadowlark Lemon, the “clown prince” of basketball’s barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters, whose blend of hook shots and humor brought joy to millions of fans around the world, has died. He was 83.

Lemon’s wife and daughter confirmed to the team that he died Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona, Globetrotters spokesman Brett Meister said Monday.

Meister did not know the cause of death.

Although skilled enough to play professionally, Lemon instead wanted to entertain, his dream of playing for the Globetrotters hatched after watching a newsreel of the all-black team at a cinema house when he was 11.

Lemon ended up becoming arguably the team’s most popular player, a showman known as much for his confetti-in-the-water-bucket routine and slapstick comedy as his half-court hook shots and no-

Abstract artist Ellsworth Kelly dies at 92 at home The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPENCERTOWN, N.Y. – Ellsworth Kelly, a painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work over seven decades made him one of America’s leading abstract artists, has died.

He was 92.

Kelly’s Manhattan gallerist, Matthew Marks Gallery, said he died Sunday at his upstate New York home.

Peter Wenk, the owner of a funeral home near Kelly’s home studio in Spencertown, on Monday confirmed Kelly’s death but couldn’t provide any other details, such as the cause.

In recent years, the artist had been suffering from lung ailments.

Kelly’s work emphasized the simplicity of form associated with minimalism, hardedge painting, color field and pop art.

One of his signature works, “The Chatham Series,” is made up of 14 L-shaped monochrome panels.

When he received the Na-

tional Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013, his citation read: “A careful observer of form, color, and the natural world, Mr. Kelly has shaped more than half a century of abstraction and remains a vital influence in American art.”

Born in Newburgh in New York’s Hudson Valley in 1923, Kelly grew up in New Jersey and enrolled in art school in New York City in 1941.

He left school during World War II, when he painted camouflage patterns on fake tanks and other military objects produced by a special Army unit to deceive the Germans.

Among his comrades was Bill Blass, the future fashion designer.

Kelly moved to Paris after the war to study art. He returned to New York in the mid-1950s to begin creating the boldly colored geometric paintings that were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, as well as in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe.

BUSINESS Professor with Morris ties receives fellowship SUBMITTED REPORT On Oct. 21, a lineup of experts was celebrated at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, England, with the first Globe Senior Research Fellowships, created to recognize the contribution to knowledge of Shakespearean theatre through their work at and for the Globe over several decades.

One of the fellows is Franklin J. Hildy, the son of Charlotte Hildy of Morris.

He is professor of theater and director of the PhD program in the School of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland. Hildy also is the director of Shakespeare’s Globe USA Research Archive.

He works as a theater consultant for historic theater preservation and reconstruction and is a member of the Architecture Research Group for Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

Hildy has conducted field research on historic theaters in 21 countries. As co-author with Oscar G. Brockett of “The History of Theatre,” a work he sometimes refers to as the “bible of theatre history,” his writing on theater architecture is read worldwide.

He serves as convener of the Theatre Architecture Working Group for the International Federation for Theatre Research, is a member of the International Organization for Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians and an associate of Prespectiv-The Association of Historic Theatres in Eu-

Seneca’s quest for Marseilles title ends

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MARSEILLES – Seneca’s quest to do at its new holiday event what it did four times at its old one ended – at least in 2015 – Monday with a 48-31 loss to second-seeded Flanagan-Cornell at the seventh annual Marseilles Holiday Tournament.

The four-time Plano Christmas Classic champion will continue the tournament in the fifth-place bracket at 5 p.m.

Facing heralded Hinsdale South and its Northwestern-bound 6-foot-10 center Barrett Benson (24 points,10 rebounds) on Monday, the Indians were looking to make some noise at York.

After Hinsdale South erased a 47-38 Minooka lead in the last six minutes of the game, Minooka’s Larry Roberts (16 points) buried his fourth 3-pointer to tie it at 50, with 14 seconds remaining.

With three seconds left, Benson received a pass four feet from the hoop. After almost shuffling his feet, Benson ran over an Indians defender and then laid in a basket that appeared not to have beaten the buzzer.

Overtime, right?

Not so fast. The three officials looked at each other and made the belated call, that Benson’s basket did beat the buzzer. Final score: Hinsdale South 52. Minooka 50.

“I will not comment on the final play,” Tanaka said. “We should have never allowed ourselves to be put in that situation.”

Indeed. For 3∏ quarters, the Indians (7-4) dominated the highly ranked Hornets (8-2). Minooka grabbed a 12-7 first quarter lead on 3-pointers from Kyle Graebner and Roberts. Roberts opened the second quarter with his second and third 3-pointers for a 23-13 lead.

McCormack picked up another steal and hit Anderson for another layup and a 5047 lead. Roberts struck from long range to tie the game at 50 with 14 seconds left.

“It was a good game. Last year we had problems finishing games and that happened again to us tonight.” Jonny Butler said. “This really hurts.”

With losing streak over, High marks for Chicago confidence rising Jay Cutler, rookies Bears made strides on offense, defense in 26-21 win over Tampa Bay Buccaneers

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com Even at the tail end of a losing season, wins have a way of lifting spirits in the NFL, instilling confidence in the present but even more so in the future.

As Bears players returned to work on Monday, that’s what some felt in the most recent one, a 26-21 win over the Buccaneers that ended a three-game losing skid.

“It was huge; a big confidence boost for us as a team, big confidence boost for us as a line because that wasn’t an easy front,” Matt Slauson said. “We need to carry that over into this week and hopefully get a win so that springs us into the spring feeling good and feeling like we have something really solid to build on.”

Indeed, the offensive line had a resurgent day.

After a couple of challenging weeks in the running game, the three-headed attack of Matt Forte, Jeremy Langford and Ka’Deem Carey combined for 37 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown against a Tampa Bay defense that was allowing just 94 yards per game com-

ing in.

The success happened in tandem with Vlad Ducasse unseating Pat Omameh at right guard and Slauson sliding from left guard to center to fill in briefly after Hroniss Grasu injured his knee.

Likewise, the defense had a bounce-back of its own.

One week after Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater set a Bears record for opposing quarterback rating, Chicago held No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston to just 15-of-29 passing and only 21 points.

Performances like these are obviously good for the morale of the unit but also for the individual players who make them happen.

On defense yesterday, Pernell McPhee fought through a lingering knee injury for his first sack since Week Eight against the Vikings, and a collection of undrafted rookies made plays in John Timu, Jonathan Anderson and Harold Jones-Quartey.

For undrafted rookies and impending free agents, the final couple games of a losing season can hold a special value.

“I think what’s crept in the locker room as far as the season coming to an end is

the fact that a lot of us want to stay together,” said Sam Acho, who joined Jarvis Jenkins and Tracy Porter, among others, on a one-year ‘prove it’ deal.

“I think we all see that we’re building toward something – yeah, our record is 6-9 at this point – but we see the hope, and we see that we’re building toward something,” Acho said.

Acho said he doesn’t have a feel for his situation, as Pace and the Bears front office have sent the message that they’ll wait until the end of the season to make decisions on which players to bring back.

That makes a game and especially a win over Tampa Bay crucial.

It also sets up Sunday’s finale against the Lions at Soldier Field as one last shot to prove something for players who want to stay.

It’s bittersweet, really.

“The games that we’ve lost, we essentially gave those games away,” Acho said. “People talk about those kinds of phrases, euphemisms or whatever. But we gave those games away.

We lost. We had no business being close in four or five of those losses that we had on the last play or the last second. We should have blown those teams out. So we know we’re in control of our success.”

harkush@chicagofootball.com It would be a real mistake to try and take too much from the Bears’ 26-21 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday.

It was big because it snapped a three-game skid in which the Bears had gotten progressively worse each week, and even bigger because it gave last year’s 5-11 team its sixth win this year with an all new coaching staff and front office.

When you’re climbing from the bottom up progress is huge and Sunday was a big step.

But if you start assuming the Bears solved all kinds of personnel questions with nice performances from so many youngsters, you can delude yourself into a real fool’s paradise.

The Bucs are also a 6-9 team that has lost three straight and four of its last five, all to losing teams.

The Bears won in large part because the Bucs gave them three really bad turnovers, and trailing 7-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter a critical mistake of their own that could have turned the game 180 degrees when Jay Cutler had a pass tipped by Gerald McCoy and picked by William Gholston at the Bears’ 39 and returned to the 15 was overturned by a Bucs

That said, there was much to feel good about.

Ryan Pace and John Fox were here almost two full months before they confirmed whether or not Jay Cutler would even be a Bear this year.

He now appears to be a lock as the quarterback of the present and future.

Both Jeremy Langford and Matt Forte played really well in Tampa behind an excellent run-blocking effort from the offensive line.

But the perception that Ka’Deem Carey’s recent success in the red zone and short-yardage situations has made Forte expendable when his contract expires at the end of the season is a very dangerous conclusion.

Carey touched the ball once in the first three quarters – his one-yard touchdown run – and then again for his touchdown reception on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Carey’s remaining six carries-for-15 yards came only after Forte was out with a back problem and Langford was gassed during the final 6:28 of the game.

How do you decide?

First, work out what holdings partner needs to make each choice the winner, and consider whether either is consistent with the auction and play so far.

In this deal, for example, East has to choose a play at trick four. South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond king, under which East encourages with his 10. West continues with the diamond jack and diamond queen. East overtakes the queen with his ace and, when declarer follows throughout, what should East do next?

Children older than 6 months should get a flu shot annually • Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in October 2012.

Dear Dr. K: I know my child is supposed to get a flu shot each year. But how much good does it really do, and is it safe?

Dear Reader: Every fall and winter, parents face the question: Should my child get an influenza (flu) shot?

There are several important reasons why children older than 6 months should get a flu shot every year: • Influenza can be dangerous, even for healthy children. Flu can be dangerous for children, particularly those with asthma, diabetes or other chronic

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff health problems. But even healthy children can get very sick – and possibly die – from influenza. The H1N1 “swine flu” virus that has been circulating since the epidemic of 2009-10 is particularly dangerous for children.

• You can’t catch the flu from a flu shot. The flu shot, given by needle, contains virus that has been killed. Despite misconceptions some parents have, the flu shot cannot infect your child and cause the flu.

There now is a nasal spray flu vaccine made with weak-

ened (but still alive) flu virus, for children who hate shots.

While nasal congestion and a low-grade fever can occur (in about one in 20 children), the illness is milder and briefer than the flu. If your child is between 6 months and 2 years or has a weakened immune system, however, he or she should get the flu shot, not the nasal spray vaccine.

Some children (and adults) who get the flu shot also get a mild fever, an aching muscle where the flu shot was given and feel tired for a day or so.

That’s not because the shot gave them the flu; it’s a sign their immune system is responding vigorously to the shot. That’s good news, because that’s what we want

the immune system to do.

• The flu shot is safe. Years of experience have shown the flu vaccine is very safe. There is no evidence thimerosal, a common vaccine preservative, is dangerous for children. But preservative-free preparations are available.

A particular flu vaccine used in 1976 did seem to cause a few cases of the neurological condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome. But this same condition can follow getting the flu itself. Indeed, it happens more often after the flu than after getting a flu shot. Since the flu shot protects against the flu, your child is less likely to get this rare condition if they get the flu vaccine.

• The flu shot protects more

than your child. Children are

germ-producing machines.

Your child may weather the flu fine – but what about others who could catch the flu from your child?

Although there are a few unusual circumstances in which your pediatrician might recommend against a flu shot, the flu shot almost always is a safe treatment.

It is not too late to get the shot: Flu season will continue for another three months.

And the shot can make all the difference in your child’s health.
