Born in Morris, IL, he spent his life in and around Marseilles and Minooka, IL. After graduating from Minooka High School, Larry started his career in the laboratory at Amoco Chemical, where he worked for over 24 years and 7 years at Expert Optics respectively. He spent the last 30 years of his career in land and residential development (Heather Ridge subdivision), and pursuing other entrepreneurial ventures.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Shoppers were out in force the day after Christmas to find the best deals in downtown Morris.

At 9:30 a.m. Friday, when Whimsy opened its doors for the day, a line of customers waited to get in to take advantage of day after Christmas prices.

“We’ve been very busy,” said Barb Rymarczyk, an employee at Whimsy. “We have 50 percent off Christmas items and the people came in and went right to what they wanted.”

She said the warmer weather Friday or people having an extra day off may have kept the store filled with people most of the day.

It was great to see a lot of people from out of town shopping in downtown Morris, Rymarczyk said.

Around the corner at GiGi’s, Cortney Aramburu shopped for clothes for herself.

“I’m out doing returns and exchanges, but I’m also buying things for me,” she said. “As I shopped for others, I saw things I liked and now it’s time to buy them for me.”

According to the National Retail Federation, 20 to 40 percent of yearly sales for small and mid-sized retailers take place within the last two months of the year, with the day after Christmas falling in line behind Black Friday and Shop Local Saturday.

It’s not just the small local stores that experience the crowd of shoppers for after-Christmas sales.

Judy Anderson said she spent the morning Friday going from one big box store to the next to find the best deals on wrapping paper and bows for next year.

“I go out every year when the stores first open and buy all my wrapping paper for next year,” she said. “It doesn’t make sense to pay full price for it each year when you can just think ahead and shop for it at a discount.”

She said she used to take her kids with when they were younger so they could spend their gift cards, but now that they have moved out on their own, she spends the day shopping by herself.

Disaster Fund receives donations from local charities

cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A permanent Disaster Fund has been established to prepare Grundy County for the worst.

The fund is with the Community Foundation of Grundy County and has $20,000 in it – $10,000 donated apiece by the foundation and Operation St. Nick. The money will grow in the fund with the foundation and will be available immediately, according to the foundation.

“We donated $10,000 each to kick off the Disaster Relief Fund,” said Joe Schmitz, St. Nick president. “We would like to build it up to $100,000 and hopefully never need it.”

2013, the foundation, St. Nick, United Way and We Care came together to raise money to help victims.

The organizations and their volunteers teamed up to help with immediate needs for people affected while they waited on help from state and federal organizations such as FEMA.

Families received mini grants formed from the funds raised. The organizations gave out more than $400,000 to area families and businesses recovering from the tornado that hit the Coal City and Diamond area.

Schmitz said the Disaster Fund will assist with clothing,

food, prescriptions and other immediate needs victims have that can’t wait.

What constitutes a disaster will vary on a case-by-case basis, but is meant for events that affect a wide-range of people or areas, not, for instance, a single house fire, Buck said.

Response will depend on the severity of the impact and the status of state and federal help, she said.

The groups will form a committee that will set guidelines for the fund’s use and will be ready when, if ever, the next disaster strikes.

“Last year’s tornado in Diamond and Coal City was a quick initiation for our area’s agencies and organizations. We all feel better prepared for the future – we know our strengths and what resources we can quickly bring to the table and out to the community,” Buck said in the release.

Grundy County sheriff’s deputies cracking down on drunken drivers MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County sheriff’s deputies are out in force as part of the annual Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunken drivers. The statewide effort will include alcohol and seat belt enforcement throughout Grundy County.

The crackdown also will be supported by national and state paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunken driving through the new year, according to a news release from Sheriff Kevin Callahan’s office.

Callahan said deputies will be aggressively looking for intoxicated drivers during the

crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. In addition, front and back seat belt law violators will be ticketed.

“You’ll see us out there during this highly visible enforcement period. Drunk drivers will be arrested and those not observing seat belt laws will be ticketed,” Callahan said in

MORRIS – A Grundy County site is one of six locations within the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor offering a limited-issue stamp to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the corridor, according to a Canal Corridor Association news release.

The Grundy County Historical Society Museum in Morris is among the six locations; the other five are the Will County Historical Museum in Lockport, the Lemont train station, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the Ottawa Visitors Center and the Lock 16 Center in LaSalle.

The association is collaborating with the National Park Service to participate in its Passport to Your National Parks Program.

Through the program, individuals buy passport books and collect stamps at parks, monuments and heritage areas across the country.

Illinois manufacturers may get a boost from a bill introduced by members of the local congressional delegation that requires a national strategic manufacturing plan.

“Illinois is still one of the top manufacturing states in the country,” U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, said Tuesday. “We’ve seen manufacturing get hit over the decades and the recession. 12 Community foundation helps MVK school get new instruments MORRIS DAILY HERALD MAZON – The Community Foundation of Grundy County recently approved a grant to Mazon-Verona-Kinsman (MVK) Middle School to purchase new band instruments, including two French horns, a baritone sax and a tuba.

The instruments that were replaced were originally purchased in the 1970s and some were no longer able to be repaired, according to a news release from the foundation. The foundation provided a $5,000 grant from

An unfulfilled anthem of peace In the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke, an angel appears to shepherds near Bethlehem and proclaims the birth of a savior.

Then, other angels appear and sing, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men.”

Peace on earth. What a difficult goal to accomplish in an age of terrorism and armed conflict, even in the Christmas season, even 20 centuries after the angels sang.

One century ago, soldiers fighting in the fifth month of the Great War, later renamed World War I, gave peace on earth a chance.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 was not ordered by statesmen or generals.

It happened spontaneously along Europe’s Western Front.

From inside trenches dug in Belgian and French soil by British and German soldiers, Christmas carols were sung, the words and melodies drifting across the cold, deadly no-man’s land.

Then, unbelievably, soldiers who had killed each other by the thousands cautiously rose up from their trenches on Christmas Day, apprehensively walked into the muddy no-man’s land, greeted each other, exchanged gifts and even kicked around a soccer ball.

Several dozen such unofficial armistices occurred along the front, much to the joy of the soldiers, and much to the consternation of their leaders. According to the Associated Press, those leaders ordered Christmas artillery attacks in 1915, 1916 and 1917 to make sure troop-inspired truces never happened again.

A century after the Christmas Truce of 1914, we honor the soldiers who sought respite from the horrors of war by having the courage to embrace peace.

During the holiday season of 2014, let’s remember their example.

Future uncertain, Romney sits atop GOP polls It can be hard to take the idea of a Mitt Romney 2016 presidential run seriously.

After all, this is the man who said of losing general election candidates, “They become a loser for life.” At least in presidential terms, he had that mostly right.

But what to make of polls continuing to show Romney at the head of the Republican presidential pack a little more than a year before the Iowa caucuses? A new Fox News survey finds Romney the GOP leader, with 19 percent, ahead of Jeb Bush, who is pretty far back at 10 percent. Everybody else is bunched together behind Bush.

A Washington Post/ABC News poll showed a similar result, as did other recent polls from McClatchy-Marist and Quinnipiac. In all, Romney hovered around 20 percent, well ahead of the GOP field.

Many polls don’t include Romney in their surveys.

But the ones that do suggest that, at least for now, Romney is a front-runner, if not the front-runner in the 2016 Republican race.

roesterle@shawmedia.com PLANO – After nearly two weeks without a game, Morris boys basketball coach Joe Blumberg was a bit concerned his Redskins might be rusty at the start of Friday’s game against Seneca in the 52nd annual Plano Christmas Classic. Couple with the fact that Seneca had beaten Princeton, 64-60, Tuesday in tourney action, and the concern was multiplied.

The Redskins laid that concern to rest early, playing tight defense and controlling the boards in taking a 26-16 lead into halftime. Morris kept that cushion for most of the second half and came away with a 51-41 win. The sixth-seeded Redskins (6-3), who finished second in the tournament last season, move on to play No. 3 seed Burlington Central at 7 p.m. today. The Rockets de-

“I was more concerned with how we would start today,” Blumberg said. “We haven’t played since the 13th (against Yorkville) and it’s the day after a holiday. Plus, Seneca was coming in with a lot of confidence after beating Princeton.

“Holding them to a 16-point first half was a good start.”

The Redskins jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Austin Patterson, who led all scorers with 26 points, and a bucket by Griffin Sobol (6 points). Seneca (4-8) answered with a 3-pointer by Ross Mc-

Baskets by Evan Bjelland (seven points) and Sobol sandwiched a hoop by McCormick to start the second quarter before Niewinski scored, and Sobol got a steal and a layup to give Morris a 19-8 lead. Seneca then got a 3-point play by Arik Applebee and a 3-pointer

by Sean Baker to pull to within 19-14 before Morris closed the half on a 7-2 run, capped by another Patterson 3.

“We played hard, but I was a little disappointed with our start,” Seneca coach Russell Witte said. “We let them dictate the tempo on both offense and defense. We don’t have a real strong inside game right

now, so if we aren’t making jump shots, we struggle. And we didn’t make many in the first half.

“We wanted to take their offensive glass away because they are a good rebounding team, and we weren’t able to do that very well. And Patterson is a good shooter who is very good when you give him time to get set, which we did too often.”

McCormick scored 10 of Seneca’s 12 points in the third quarter, and Patterson had 10 of Morris’ 13 as the Redskins took a 39-28 lead into the fourth. The lead reached 48-32 with 3:24 to play before Seneca ended the game on a 9-3 spurt.

“This is the second game in a row where we didn’t handle pressure well late in the game,” Blumberg said. “We have to keep working on that.

And, in our next game, we are going to have to be more physical in order to win.”

Shaw Media Correspondent PLANO – In the eight days since Newark’s boys basketball team traveled to Aurora Christian, Newark coach Rick Tollefson hoped a healthier roster might serve to change the 74-48 outcome.

When the two teams faced off Dec. 18, he didn’t have big man Jack Clausel in the center of his offense and on Friday afternoon he was back.

Unfortunately for the Norseman, Clausel’s 11 second-half points weren’t enough as Aurora Christian defeated Newark again, this time by a score of 68-52 to advance to the Round of 8 in the Plano Christmas Classic. “[Aurora Christian] is quick, and they’re very physical. They put a lot of hands on you,” Tollefson said after Friday’s loss. “I wouldn’t say we were at full strength because Jack (Clausel) was sick and he’s been sick for awhile and I’ve got a guy (guard

iday break, as both Newark and Aurora Christian combined to turn the ball over 12 times in the first quarter. However, Newark’s cold 2-for-11 start from the floor put the Norseman in a 14-9 hole at the end of one.

In the second quarter, Aurora Christian extended that lead out to nine before an 11-4 Newark run would cut it to 22-20. That was as close as the game would get, as Aurora Christian hit its final five shots of the half and finished

on a 9-2 run to take a 31-22 cushion to the break.

“The kids were all pumped up,” Aurora Christian coach Pat McNamara said of the Eagles’ late first-half run.

“They were all excited out there when [Zach Singer] hit a 3 from the corner over there and that really gave us a lot of momentum going into halftime.

“We always stress coming out in the first three minutes of the second half with a lead and really knocking ’em out.”

And knock Newark out they did.

Aurora Christian opened the second half on a 12-3 run that extended its lead to 18, and never looked back on its way to the win.

Behind 14 points from Singer and 13 points from Juwan Sisco, Aurora Christian improved to 7-1 on the season.

Newark (5-7) was paced by 13 points from Steve McGrath.

The Norsemen will play St. Bedeat at 2 p.m. today.

PLANO – Coming off a 37-point drubbing at the hands of St. Bede in the opening round of the Plano Christmas Classic, the Coal City boys basketball team hoped to be able to use its consolation bracket games to get a young, inexperienced roster some valued game repetitions.

On Friday, in a 68-41 loss to Forreston, the Coalers did, in fact, make some minor strides, but it wasn’t enough to avoid another lopsided defeat. The Coalers didn’t shoot well early, hitting just one of their 12 first-quarter field goal attempts and falling behind 17-5 at the end of one.

However, in the second quarter, they finally found a bit of a rhythm offensively. For a stretch in the second quarter, Coal City shot 63 percent from the field while cutting the Forreston lead to 31-20 powered

Forreston finished the half on a 9-0 run that gave it a 40-20 lead at the break and the Coalers wouldn’t be able to pull within 20 points the rest of the night.

In the second half, the Coalers traded baskets with Forreston to keep the deficit at 20, but an 11-0 run would eventually give Forreston a 31-point lead.

“Hopefully, being embarrassed twice back-to-back will force out guys to find a little competitiveness in them,” Boresi said.

Forreston was led by 17 points from Robert Devries, 12 from Ethan Groom and 10 from Markus Elder. Coal City was paced by Johnson’s 10-point effort. Segal Arias chipped in six points while Steven Zhang hit his only two field goal attempts to finish with five.

Coal City will face Wilmington at 3:30 p.m. today in the auxiliary gym.

Paying it forward can be most rewarding I must say, I have seen and heard of a lot of Christmas spirit going around this year. I don’t know if it is just me, but it seems that people are a little more cheerful and not quite as rushed as usual.

A very good friend of mine commented on the same experiences. She was the recipient, on three separate occasions, of someone paying it forward. The first time she was at a local salon when someone footed the bill for everyone’s services that were in there. This man spent around $500 to make all these folks’ day a little brighter.

The next time she was at a restaurant when someone out-of-the-blue paid for their meal. You would think that twice in one year was a lot, but then while waiting at a fast food restaurant, someone paid for everyone’s food

in that line. Three times!

That just doesn’t happen every day.

It is really that spirit of giving that makes the season so special. Yes, we all love to receive gifts. I like opening presents on Christmas morning just as much as the next person, but watching someone really appreciate something you gave them becomes more and more important to me every year.

Nature loves to give.

There are so many times when we take for granted the good times we enjoy while outdoors. Each opportunity that I have to float down a crystal clear stream, I try to appreciate what a gift I am receiving. The coursing water propels my little boat through abundant natural beauty while relaxing and chasing a few fish.

This last summer while

To watch the beaming smiles on my sons’ faces as they watched their plastic frogs get annihilated by ravenous largemouth was amazing. Just yesterday I looked back at some photos of them from that very trip and my heart longed to go back and enjoy Old Man River one more time.

I could go on for many pages about how the outdoors gives freely of herself and pays it forward. The real catch though, is then it is our turn to do some good deeds.

It is our turn to give freely of ourselves.

There are many ways that a person can do this. We could spend a few minutes walking a road ditch and picking up trash. It doesn’t take that long and the benefits are enormous.

We could always donate some of our income to a wide variety of conservation groups. There are so many for us to choose from and no matter what your own political affiliation or beliefs.

If you look long enough you will find there is an organization that aligns itself with your ideals.

Personally, I like to pay it forward to the outdoors by taking people fishing. There are so many individuals I know that love to fish, but may not have made the time in their busy schedules to actually go out. One year, then another, and another, go by and their rods and reels sit

without ever getting used.

It brings me great satisfaction to watch someone catch a good fish. I love it when they reach over the side of the boat and haul in a beautiful specimen and hold it high for everyone to see. Every time, no matter the age, social status or financial gifts, a person that catches a good fish smiles. It is universal.

Yes, I have reaped the benefits of Mother Nature providing me with bountiful opportunities. Many times she has made my day just a little better; a little more complete. If I can pass that gift on to someone else and help them cherish the natural world around us, then I would be more than happy to pay that forward.

Neat-freak’s girlfriend sweeps suggestions aside Dear Abby: Is nitpicking a poor trait to have? I see it as a positive thing as long as matters are brought up in a helpful way. If you want a healthy relationship with the person you live with, isn’t it best to tell her what you think should be done and how?

Two examples: My girlfriend likes to take her socks off when she’s lying on the couch. She rolls them off her feet with the opposite foot and they sometimes end up in the corner of the couch, but most of the time on the floor. Also, dishes never get rinsed off, washed or put away on time.

The sock thing is gross, and the dishes end up stinking or the food gets stuck on them.

Also, the dishes sit in the strainer, not the cupboard.

Is that what your girlfriend calls it when you tell her she’s doing something that bothers you? Nitpicking encompasses more than asking someone to pick up her socks or not leave the dishes in the sink or on the counter. (If she washes them,

shouldn’t YOU put them into the cupboard?)

There are few things that a neatnik finds more upsetting than living with someone who is disorganized.

You and your girlfriend appear to have some very basic differences.

If you’re planning to make this romance a lifelong commitment, I’m warning both of you in advance that you can’t change another person. Got it?

Dear Abby: I’ve been doing my mother-in-law’s hair for the last seven years. I became very busy with clients and had her double-booked in between clients because she wasn’t a paying customer. She felt “shuffled around” and decided to text me, telling me she will go to another hairdresser.

I’m hurt and don’t understand why she wouldn’t communicate this to me directly so we could have worked something out. What’s the best way to handle this? – Hairdresser

Dear Hairdresser: Talk with her directly. Tell her you received her text and the snub wasn’t intentional. One would think she’d realize you were doing her a favor by working her in, but if she can’t understand that, then perhaps it’s better she see another stylist.

Accept it and move on.

Dear Abby: My daughter calls me (hands-free) when she is driving in her car. We have lively conversations and I enjoy her calls. However, she is always either running errands or on her way to work

when she calls. I can be in the middle of a sentence when she announces, “Oops, Mom, I’ve reached my destination. Gotta go. Love you!”

Am I wrong to feel she is “fitting” me in? Or should I just be happy for the call? – A Mom in Connecticut Dear Mom: It may seem like your daughter is “fitting you in,” but at least she ends the conversations with an expression of love. If her schedule is busy, her drive time may be the optimum time for her to talk privately. So be happy – it’s better than never hearing from her at all.

Kin Hubbard, a journalist and humorist who died in 1930, said, “It’s the good loser who finally loses out.”

At the bridge table, it’s the good winner who finally eliminates his losers.

There are two common ways of eliminating losers: Ruff them in the shorter trump hand or discard them on side-suit winners.

In this deal, how should South play in four spades after West leads the heart king?

North had a minimum hand for a raise to two spades, but bridge is a bidder’s game. Over four spades, West wondered if his side had a cheap save at the five-level, but he knew the spades were breaking badly for his opponents.

South has rounded-suit losers and seems to have nine top tricks: six spades, one heart and two diamonds.

However, in case the play takes a nasty turn or two, declarer should play to ruff losers on the board.

He wins the first trick with his heart ace, cashes the diamond ace and returns a heart. West, who sees his partner play high-low to indicate a doubleton, wins and continues with the heart 10.

But since South has also noted East’s signal, he discards a club from the dummy. East pitches his second diamond. West now leads his diamond queen, East ruffs dummy’s king, and declarer overruffs. South then concedes a club trick to void the dummy of that suit.

Suppose East wins with his queen and returns a trump. Declarer wins and crossruffs home, trumping two clubs on the board and two diamonds in his hand.
