Catherine “Kay” Ann Shea, age 92, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully December 21, 2014, at Our Lady of Angel’s Retirement Home in Joliet.

Born January 7, 1922, in Joliet, Catherine Ann was a daughter of the late Bernard “Bert” and Helen (Tebeau) Staehely. She was raised in Joliet, graduated from Joliet Twp HS with the Class of 1940 and went on to Joliet Junior College to earn her Teaching Certification. On July 19, 1944, Kay married John “Elmer” Shea in Ft. Knox, KY and together they lived in Joliet before moving to the Joliet Arsenal. It was in 1956 that they moved to Wilmington, where they made their home and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994.

Kay taught school in the Minooka Country School and later went to work at Clennon Electric in Wilmington as a secretary. Kay was a very active member of St. Rose Church in Wilmington, where was involved with the Mother’s Club, served on Parish Council and was a past officer of the C.C.W., who honored her with “Woman of the Year”. Kay and Elmer participated in CFM (Catholic Family Movement) and she was a volunteer at

Kuzma Care Cottage. She loved playing bridge and belonged to a Card Club. Kay Shea was a woman of deep faith, who not only loved serving her church, but her community.

Survivors include her son, Deacon John P. (Lynette) Shea; daughter, Kathryn S. Shea; and son-in-law, Larry (Nancy) Weitekamp; eleven grandchildren, Kimberly (David) Gray, Brett (Cara) Weitekamp, Erin J. (Scott) Smith, Kate Shea, Kendra Albritton, Devyn Wingater, Austin Weitekamp, Ryan Weitekamp, Kayla Weitekamp, Lauren Weitekamp and Kaitlin Weitekamp; great grandchildren, Mitchell, Ethan, Matthew, Suzanne, Abigail Grace, Aiden, Chase, Madison, Asia and Benjamin; and numerous friends.

Kay was preceded by her parents; daughter, Peggy Weitekamp; son, Daniel Joseph Shea in infancy; and husband, Elmer.

Visitation will be Monday, December 29, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd. in Wilmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow Tuesday, December 30th at 10:00 a.m. in St. Rose Church, 608 S. Kankakee St. in Wilmington. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Wilmington.

Annual Christmas Day meal at Turtle’s Tap draws crowd

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As she does every year on Christmas Day, Barb Raab was sitting late Thursday morning in the first booth at Turtle’s Tap in Morris.

She sits there alone, waiting for her company to arrive.

She’s never sure who that company will be, or if they will make it, but she wants to be ready just in case.

“I sit in the front booth because I’m acquainted with several of the homeless people in town,” she said. “I sit here and hold the booth so they have a place to sit when they come in to eat. No one sits with them, and I’m not sure why, so I give them someone to sit with.”

Raab is one of many local residents who have made attending the Christmas Day meal at Turtle’s Tap a holiday tradition. This is the 18th year Turtle’s Tap owners Kevin “Turtle” Krople and his wife, Sara, have hosted a

free Christmas meal for people who don’t want to spend Christmas alone.

“It’s amazing to see not just the people who come to eat, but we have about 50 or 60 volunteers who come out each year to serve,” Krople said. “We make it work.”

This year, the doors opened at 11 a.m. to serve a free meal to anyone who wanted to come and eat. By 11:08 a.m., between those coming to dine and those attending to serve, there were 100 people in the door.

Money collected from the fountain inside the lobby of Turtle’s Tap is collected throughout the year and set aside to purchase gifts for every guest who attends the Christmas dinner.

Krople said he can’t take any of the credit for the day, as volunteers run everything from making the food to buying the gifts that each person gets to leave with. He said one couple, Dale and Carla Ferrara, have volunteered every Christmas since he started

This year Brandon Cook was on hand in the gifting area, where volunteers match gifts to the age and gender of each guest. This was Cook’s first year helping out.

“We had Christmas last weekend with our family so we decided to come out and volunteer,” Cook said as he scrambled between wrapping stations, getting the next gift on his list.

Kindness matters Community comes together to celebrate holiday with Saratoga Towers residents

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Within the walls of Saratoga Towers a spirit resonates – a spirit of giving, of family, of togetherness.

Residents of Saratoga Towers are made up of community members who are elderly or who have disabilities. They volunteer their time at the hospital, delivering meals to people throughout the county and checking on one another when one isn’t feeling well.

Some residents have children, some have grandchildren

and others are alone except for each other.

They live by the motto “Kindness matters.”

On Christmas Eve, members of the community came together to show them that indeed, kindness does matter.

No one should be alone on Christmas Eve. The Eberhard family of Coal City knows the love of the residents who combined their resources and donated to Cure It Foundation in honor of Luchi Eberhard, who is battling cancer. They decided to host a Christmas Eve celebration as a way to say thank you to those residents and they invited all 99 residents of Saratoga Towers to share a meal together.

6 District 54 offers ambassador program to help new students

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It can be scary to start a new school where the students have known each other for years.

Juliet Longano, Shabbona Middle School social worker, said the school has started a student ambassador program to make moving to the district a little less scary.

“We started the student ambassador program this year and opened it up to students in sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grades,” Longano said.

Students who want to be ambassadors fill out an application, as well as provide three recommendation letters from teachers and staff.

Applicants must have passing grades, and if any of their quarterly grades fall to an F, they are removed from the program.

Longano said the program is different than honor society and the types of programs that students get in based on their academic progress, as this group is for anyone who just wants to help.

“We recognize there are great leaders in every group,” Longano said.

There were 70 applicants, and 31 students were chosen.

Shawnee Timm, a seventh-grade ambassador, thinks being able to help

someone new to the school feel lonely is a great idea.

“When you are new and alone, this gives the student someone to help them and be their friend,” Timm said.

Seventh-grade ambassador Skyler Jordan said it’s always nice to know someone will be there to help you and that is why she wanted to join the group.

Longano said getting used to the layout of the school and learning everyone’s name was difficult for her as an adult when she started last year, so she understands how new kids feel.

The ambassador gives a new student a tour of the building and has been trained to explain to them the electives and scheduling, as well as what social activities the school has to offer such as dances and sports teams.

“They escort them to their class and introduce them to the class after they’ve showed them around,” Longano said.

“It helps break down the fears most new students have.”

In addition to welcoming new students, the ambassadors have helped create signs for red ribbon week and have come up with ideas to celebrate the week.

They also helped collect food for We Care of Grundy County from the different classrooms.

Besides the special Christmas Operation St. Nick was able to give these 58 families, 12 Military Families were granted their Chirstmas Dream Wish up to $2,500 enabling them to enjoy a Christmas they could only dream about…and you made their dreams come true.

It has been a special Christmas for so many families that have fallen on hard times for one reason or another right here in our own back yards. This has only been made possible because of your generosity and supporting the Operation St. Nick Radio Auction, the Christmas In July Party this summer at Clayton’s Tap and those who send donations to Operation St. Nick, PO Box 781, Morris.

In January, the board of Operation St. Nick will go back to work, planning for Christmas 2015 for those families in need plus for 12 more Military families.

With a quick post to Facebook, people from Mazon to Morris to Plainfield came together to make sure that every Saratoga Towers resident would get something for Christmas.

Debra Johnson arrived to play Christmas music on the piano; and her daughter, Emma, brought enough colored pictures to give one to every resident. Emma and her friends

spent the past month coloring pictures for residents of Park Pointe Nursing Home and Saratoga Towers.

Santa arrived with Mrs. Claus just in time to hand out gifts to the 25 residents who were able to make it to dinner.

He left enough presents for everyone else to be delivered on Friday by Saratoga Towers maintenance staff.

The spirit of Christmas filled the community room of Saratoga Towers Christmas Eve. For one night, no one was alone, everyone felt loved and all were family.

Tesdal said she used to teach CPR and first aid at the Red Cross before she became a school teacher, and her children have attended the Morris Hospital’s 911 class. She recommends it for all kids. MORRIS – A Morris teen might have saved the life of his neighbor the week before Christmas – the second time he has played a role in a life-anddeath situation.

Morris high school sophomore Taggert Tesdal was walking toward his house after school Dec. 16 when he heard what he thought was someone yelling. He catches rides to school with a friend on his block who had dropped him off across the street, when he heard the voice as he walked toward his house. The cry became distinctive as he got closer to his house.

“I heard somebody yelling for help,” he said, “and I kind of looked around.”

He was sure the cries for help were coming from the area around his neighbor, Lenny Swanson’s house, so he walked to Swanson’s backyard thinking maybe his pet got loose and that it was outside trying to get in. No one was outside, and by this time, Taggert was running.

He returned to the front of the house and realized the cry for

help was coming from Swanson’s garage.

“He said he fell down and he couldn’t get back up,” Taggert said of his neighbor. “He said he was there for four hours. I told him I was going to call 911. ... He didn’t want me to leave. He said just stay here with me.”

Taggert did just that, talking with Swanson until the fire department and ambulance arrived. He said he could hear the stress in his neighbor’s voice.

Swanson’s wife, Diane; said her husband was taken to the hospital that cold December day and is expected to be released this week. He is weak now, she said, but he is OK. She said she believes her husband would not have made it if Taggert had not found him when he did.

“He probably saved his life,” she said of her young neighbor.

“If [Lenny] had laid there until I got home at five, he might have been gone.”

Diane Swanson said she was out Christmas shopping with her granddaughter that day, and she thinks her husband went out to the garage to work on their snowblower.

Their schnauzer was in the garage with him when he fell. Her husband told her he had been screaming periodically when someone finally heard him.

“He’s just a wonderful young man,” Diane Swanson said of Taggert. “Those boys are just the nicest boys I think I’ve ever met in my life.”

CREST HILL – The Diocese of Joliet announced that long-time diocesan benefactors John and Paulette Kaiser, parishioners of St. James the Apostle Parish in Glen Ellyn, have donated a $65,000 endowment that will assist students in need.

The fund will provide for two scholarships to financially need-based students each year in perpetuity. One scholarship is restricted for a student qualifying for tuition assistance attending St. James the Apostle School in Glen Ellyn. ‘Tis the season. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.

For children, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Making wish lists, parties at school, getting out of school for a couple of weeks, leaving cookies on a plate for Santa, fighting sleep trying to stay up and catch the old fella, but losing that battle every time.

Finally, waking up Christmas morning and seeing what wonders await under the tree.

For parents, seeing the joy in their childrens’ faces is the best present of all, certainly better than the upcoming credit card bill.

But for local sports fans, the Christmas season means basketball tournaments. A couple of girls tournaments have already finished, with Morris taking ninth at the Ottawa Tournament, losing their two pool games to eventual champion, Lincoln-Way West, and LaSalle-Peru before finshing with wins over Kankakee and Sandwich. As of the end of the tourney, the Redskins sit with a record of 11-4, which is two more wins than they had all of last year. The 2015 portion of the season is filled with promise for coach Kate Carey’s team.

Minooka is taking part in the Lincoln-Way East Medieval Classic, and they already sport a 2-0 record with wins over Plainfield South and Andrew. A couple more wins this weekend, and Ray Liberatore’s Indians can call themselves champions.

Seneca recently finished up play in the St. Bede Tournament. The Irish (5-10) finished sixth.

Coal City and Newark will each begin play in the Lisle Tournament at 8 p.m. tonight, with Newark taking on Westmont in the North Gym and the Coalers playing Timothy Christian in the South Gym. On the boys side of things, most of the action is in Plano, with Morris, Seneca, Newark and Coal City all taking part in the Plano Christmas Classic.

Coal City started the tourmament off Tuesday, but not exactly on the right foot.

Newark, the No. 13 seed, might be the scariest team with a 5-6 record in the state right now.

They have played very few games with their entire lineup because of injuries, but all are currently healthy now and the Norse could make some noise down the road, if not at the tournament. They looked very good in defeating Forreston,

57-47, on Tuesday and will play No. 4 seed Aurora Christian at 10:30 a.m. today.

Seneca, meanwhile, foiled the seed makers Tuesday as the unseeded Irish (4-7) erupted for 42 points in the second half to beat No. 11 Princeton, 64-60. That earned Seneca a rematch with sixth-seeded Morris at 3:30 p.m. today. Earlier in the year, the Redskins topped Seneca, 50-42.

Elsewhere in boys action, Gardner-South Wilmington starts play in the Marseilles Tournament against Woodland at 9 a.m. today. Small school basketball fans might want to keep an eye on the Marseilles Tournament, as it features Dwight, which was ranked No. 1 in Class 1A earlier this season, and ReedCuster, which returns most of its starters from last year’s

Class 2A Sweet 16 team. The Comets are fun to watch, and they recently put up 117 points in a win over Wilmington.

Meanwhile, Minooka will take on the host school tonight at 8 in the Elmhurst York Tournament.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Speedway completed its 44th year of racing Nov. 15 with the 2014 Awards Banquet at the VFW Hall in Morris.

It was a year of back-toback championships for Ricky Baker and Tom Knippenberg, Eddie Ligue did it in a repeat championship car, and Austin Blackwell captured stock car track championships this year in their respective divisions at the historic Illinois paved speedway.

Baker garnered top honors in the track’s Illinois Truck and Equipment sponsored super late model ranks.

The Plainfield driver is in a league of only six other drivers to accomplish repeat championships. Eddie Hoffman, Larry Schuler, Brandon Clubb and Scott Koerner rounded out the top five.

Winter’s here; be prepared

Winter officially began Sunday. And we got a taste Wednesday of what the season might bring.

Winter! Remember the last one?

It was Illinois’ worst winter in nearly 40 years, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Cold? Statewide, temperatures were the fourth coldest on record.

Snow? Almost all of Illinois had more than twice the normal winter snowfall.

Storms? Well, the state normally averages six major winter storms a season. Last year, we had 11.

Ice? Illinoisans slipped and slid their way through December, January, February and much of March.

Just because we’ve had it relatively easy in the weather department so far doesn’t mean the winter of 2014-15 won’t be rough.

The IEMA again has come out with its Winter Weather Preparedness Guide, which is filled with helpful facts and suggestions.

Among them: • Have a family emergency supply kit assembled at home, with battery powered weather and commercial radios, foods that don’t require cooking or refrigeration, extra medications, special items for babies, the disabled or elderly, extra water, flashlights and extra batteries, first-aid kit, non-prescription drugs, personal sanitary items and pet supplies.

• Have a winter storm survival kit in your vehicle. Along with a cellphone and charger, this should have blankets; sleeping bags; flashlight; batteries; first-aid kit; knife; high-calorie, non-perishable food; water; extra clothing to keep dry; large can and plastic cover with tissues and paper towels for sanitary purposes; small can and matches to melt snow to drink; sack of sand; shovel; windshield scraper and brush; tool kit; tow rope; booster cables; compass; and road maps.

More advice is offered on avoiding frozen pipes at home; preparing vehicles for winter; how to survive winter storms at home, on the road, and when outside; what to wear; and caring for animals.

Winter weather can be deadly. The IEMA reminds us that 163 people have died from exposure in Illinois since 1997.

Get ready for the cold, ice, snow, wind, slippery roads, potholes and slick sidewalks of winter.

THE FIRST

“Sadly, afflictions and tribulations have not been lacking, even more recently, in the Middle East.

They have been aggravated in the past months because of the continuing hostilities in the region, but

It has particularly affected a number of you, who have been brutally driven out of your native lands, where Christians have been present since apostolic times.”

Pope Francis was, of course, referring to the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria – a reign of death and destruction that was selected as the year’s top religion news story by members of the Religion Newswriters Association. And once again, Pope Francis was selected as Religion Newsmaker of the Year.

Here is more of the RNA Top 10 list, which included several ties: 2. The Supreme Court, in another 5-4 decision, rules that two closely held companies – Hobby Lobby and Conestoga – can claim religious objections to the Affordable Care Act mandate requiring most religious institutions to offer employees, and often students, health-insurance plans covering sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives,

including “morning-after” pills.

3. A rapid deterioration of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict includes the kidnappings and murders of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, amid increasing tensions over access to the Temple Mount. This includes an Israel-Hamas war that leaves more than 2,000 dead and a hellish attack on rabbis at prayer in a synagogue.

(TIE) Pope Francis continues his efforts to reach out to the needy, to marginalized Catholics and to people of other faiths.

4. Liberal Protestants continue to move toward full acceptance of samesex marriage and the ordination of noncelibate gay and lesbian clergy.

5. Health care workers, many of them missionaries or activists from faith-based groups, courageously carry on with their work during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

6. A broad coalition of Catholics, mainline Protestants and some evangelicals, especially in Latino congregations, celebrate President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration reform.

Bridge players need to exercise self-control, especially when there is a trump suit. The urge to remove those held by the opponents can be overwhelming, but might not be best.

In today’s deal, South is in four spades. What should he do after West leads the heart ace?

East’s two-diamond response was a transfer, showing at least five hearts and zero or more points. South’s twospade overcall was dangerous, but his heart length suggested that his partner would be short in that suit and have some spades. West rebid three hearts to indicate four-card support, and North jumped to game because he had a void and expected partner to hold a six-card suit.

After ruffing the lead in the dummy, if South plays three rounds of trumps, he draws them all, but then the defenders can cash three hearts and two clubs for down three. (True, they are unlikely to get it right and will allow declarer to escape for down two, but that is still expensive.)

South must keep the trump and heart suits under control. At trick two, he should run the spade seven. West takes the trick but has no defense. He does best to lead another high heart, in the hope that East has the diamond queen. Here, though, declarer will ruff in the dummy, play a diamond to his hand, draw trumps, and claim an overtrick.

Watch for this play of losing an inevitable trump trick as soon as possible.

Many applications for Botox besides wrinkle treatment Dear Doctor K: I thought Botox was just a wrinkle remedy. But a friend told me she uses it to treat overactive bladder. Then someone else said he had a Botox injection for tennis elbow. What exactly is Botox? What else does it treat?

Dear Reader: It’s true, Botox’s applications are more than skin-deep. Botox is one brand of botulinum toxin A. This is a substance made by the bacteria responsible for botulism, a foodborne illness that causes paralysis and sometimes death. When purified and diluted, however, botulinum toxin is a safe and useful drug.

Botulinum toxin is a muscle relaxant. In 1989 the FDA approved it for treating crossed eyes. Next came approval for smoothing facial

lines, or wrinkles. Since then, Botox and newer brands of botulinum toxin have been used to treat a growing number of conditions.

Some conditions that injections of botulinum toxin are currently used for include: • Overactive bladder and urge incontinence. Botox reduces episodes of incontinence in people for whom incontinence drugs taken by mouth don’t work.

• Chronic migraine headache.

Botox is approved for treating people with severe, frequent migraines. It doesn’t prevent migraines. But it may reduce

their number and duration.

• Upper limb spasticity. Elbows, wrists or fingers often contract uncontrollably as a result of cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain trauma or spinal cord injury.

Botox may relax muscles enough to allow people to perform basic activities like washing and dressing.

• Cervical dystonia. Uncontrollable contractions in neck muscles can force the head into awkward and uncomfortable positions. Botulinum toxin is approved for treating cervical dystonia. It relaxes the neck muscles enough to return the head to a more normal position.

• Excessive underarm perspiration. When even the strongest antiperspirants don’t work, Botox can lessen heavy sweat-

ing. It does so by blocking the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands.

• Blepharospasm. Botulinum toxin may treat uncontrolled contractions of eyelid muscles that cause rapid blinking and may even clamp the eyes shut.

• Spasmodic dysphonia. This unusual disorder affects about 50,000 people in the U.S. Its cause is unknown.

They have trouble speaking smoothly. The words come out in a hesitant and sometimes explosive fashion. Well-known radio commentator Diane Rehm has made public the fact that she suffers from this condition – and has continued her remarkable career with proper treatment.

Once a drug is approved by the FDA, doctors can prescribe it for almost any pur-

pose. This is called “off-label” use. Botulinum toxin is used off label to treat conditions as varied as teeth grinding, tennis elbow and pelvic pain.

It is remarkable that a toxin first known because of the terrible illness it causes, botulism, actually can be an effective treatment for many conditions -- if used properly.

That’s because of research directed at finding out what caused botulism. When the role of the toxin was understood, scientists also had an important insight: While too much of a bad thing can be awful, a little bit of a bad thing sometimes can be therapeutic.
