Grundy County presence in ’16

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Military veterans throughout Grundy County will have more access to VA health care in 2016.

Because of the success in reaching and caring for veterans in the Grundy County area in 2015, the Hines Mobile Medical Unit is adding monthly visits to more locations in 2016.

Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Ken Buck said there has been a combined effort, especially during the last two months, to secure more MMU visits in the county.

“We want to give veterans more opportunities to get screened and get seen at this full-service clinic,” Buck said. “We think it’s a really good step and hope to expand the outreach.”

The MMU is one of many tools Hines VA Hospital is using to reach out to area veterans to enroll them in and provide them with top-quality VA health care.

Veterans can register for VA health care and receive primary care services monthly on the mobile clinic that features two separate exam areas and a counseling room with a full staff of VA medical professionals, according to a GCVAC news release.

The GCVAC is even more excited now that the MMU has become recognized as a full, community-based clinic that will provide primary care services to more veterans in more communities, Buck said.

“It’s a good service,” Buck said. “I’d encourage veterans to visit one and find out if they’re eligible. Not only will it provide quality

Morris family shares love of cooking

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Passing down family recipes and a love of cooking seems to come naturally for the family of Dana and Debbie Olsen of Morris.

This year they have spent their time baking with their three grandchildren – Karys, Dakota and Keihn Olsen –

The grandchildren aren’t the only cooks in the family, though. The Olsens’ three – enjoy their time in the sons – Eric, Damen and Adam kitchen, as well. Eric loved it

so much he became a chef.

Debbie said she can remember her mother and aunts getting together to make cookies, and she wants her children and grandchildren to have those same positive memories.

“Times have changed, people don’t get together and bake as much,” Debbie said.

“It creates a family bond. I

love when my family comes together.”

Dana said spending time in a kitchen or over a grill cooking develops a history for the family, and gives them time to create new memories while talking about old ones.

We Care of Grundy County expands services Area residents in need can visit the agency’s pantry for food assistance Know more

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Starting in January, residents throughout Grundy County will be able to get food assistance through the We Care of Grundy County food pantry.

Previously, residents were served by food pantries in their town and were able to go to We Care during a set hour each afternoon to get bread and fresh items.

“I feel the need is out there,” Eric Fisher, executive director of We Care, said. “It’s important to us because we are We Care of Grundy County. We are in a new space and can now handle this. It’s time.”

We Care already provides numerous services to Grundy County residents such as rent and utility assistance, holiday and back-to-school assistance, a mobile food pantry and, most recently, a clothes closet.

“Until we moved into our new building, we simply did not have the space,” Fisher said in a news release. “The new building has ample room to have enough food and even back stock so that we can truly

In March, We Care moved from a 3,500-square-foot building to a new 18,000-square-foot building at 530 Bedford Road.

The services We Care provides

were expanded upon move-in with the addition of a clothes closet and a 10-by-20-foot walkin refrigerator and freezer that allowed for the inclusion of a milk program through the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

In order to provide the additional services, We Care will need two deliveries each month. The trucks are sponsored by Grundy County businesses, organizations and churches at a cost of $750 per

delivery, and with the assistance of five volunteers to help stock the shelves.

“I have faith in my county that we will be able to fill the pantry twice each month,” Fisher said. “It’s a leap of faith.”

Fisher said several slots are filled but We Care needs additional sponsors to keep the pantry open to the entire county.

They also are seeking a sponsor for February and December of next year to fill the mobile food pantry, where any Grundy resident is able to attend and receive food. The mobile trucks are at various locations throughout the county.

The cost to sponsor the mobile food pantry is $1,000 per visit.

Starting Jan. 4, We Care’s food pantry is available to any resident of Grundy County that falls into the qualification of 200 percent of the poverty level or below and who is in need of food.

She made a note that this year, they would make the cookies together.

“I probably got this cookie-maker when we got married,” she said. “The kids had never had homemade spritz cookies so we decided to make them together.”

The cookie making in the Olsen household isn’t done in one day, but spread out over the week. Whoever can come stops by and help does.

Debbie said her granddaughter, Karys, had a lot of fun creating the spritz cookies for the first time and she enjoyed watching the smile

on her face as they created pink hearts, green trees and white angels.

She said the family created an assembly line to get the hundreds of small spritz cookies – many of them eaten before they got to the table – done in one session.

This year, the family has already made a peppermint sugar cookie, peanut butter cookies topped with chocolate kisses, spritz cookies and kringla – and two days before Christmas they still weren’t done.

Keihn said his favorite so far is the spritz cookie, while Dakota said his favorite is any cookie that comes out of his grandmother’s kitchen.

They don’t just create baked items in the Olsen kitchen, though; the children

have all learned to create family favorites, such as Dakota’s favorite Golumpki, a Polish cabbage roll stuffed with sausage, hamburger and rice.

Keihn enjoys making deep dish pizza and mostaccioli.

“I like to make whatever nana is making,” Dakota said.

Keihn said if it’s food and it’s edible, he’s game to create it in the kitchen.

On top of learning about family recipes and stories of their father’s younger years, they also learn other important things.

“I learned not to burn the food,” Keihn said. “If you do, it doesn’t taste good.”

Keihn said only one batch of the spritz cookies got burned and he was reminded again of that lesson this year.

10 Car falls into DuPage

River; driver not injured

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – An 18-year-old Joliet woman was not injured Wednesday when her car fell into the DuPage River in Channahon.

Channahon police officer John Blough said a passer-by called 911 at 11:04 a.m. when the crash occurred near Shepley and Canal roads, and Shorewood police responded before it was determined the incident happened in Channahon’s jurisdiction.

“The driver later said she saw boulders in the roadway, but swerved to avoid them and went off a 12-foot cliff into the water below,” Blough said.

Blough estimated that the water was about 4 feet deep with a fast-moving current.

Blough said Emily E. Scott, the only occupant of the Lexus sedan, was able to climb onto the vehicle’s roof and grab a rope and inflatable bag thrown by officers before

firefighters arrived.

“A 14-foot ladder was lowered to the vehicle and several rescue ropes were thrown to the female for her safety,” Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis said. “Firefighters specially trained as swiftwater rescuers were positioned in several areas along the shoreline in the event they had to enter the water. The rescuers were able to access the female and help her ascend the ladder to shore.”

Blough said Scott was out of the water about 10 to 15 minutes after her car went into the river.

Scott was led to an ambulance but declined medical treatment.

Blough said Scott does not have a driver’s license and was charged with driving without a license, driving without insurance, improper display of registration and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

She was released Wednesday on bond.

MORRIS – Law enforcement agencies are urging residents of their respective jurisdictions to not drink and drive this holiday season.

The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and 170 police agencies kicked off an effort this week to keep drunk drivers off Illinois roads this holiday season. The end-of-year campaign comes as new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics indicate that while Illinois drunken driving fatalities are not increasing, they are not declining, either.

“This most recent data clearly shows drunk driving is still very much a problem in Illinois and the nation,” IDOT Director of Traffic Safety Jared Thornley said in a news release. “This holiday season, don’t put yourself or others at risk because, chances are, you’ll be caught.”

The Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs are administered by IDOT and supported by the ISP and local law enforcement.

While the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department isn’t participating because the state budget has left the programs unfunded, it will employ an additional traffic car for peak times, such as New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

The department looks for alcohol-related offenses even more than usual because of the nature of the holiday season.

But Callahan has confidence in the people of Grundy County.

“I think people, over time, have learned to be a lot smarter on New Year’s Eve,” he said.

“Some don’t even go out. I think the public takes into consideration that with people who take it too far, there’s always a potential for something to happen.”

“We call them MIPs. Men in panic,” Buchas said. “It’s when they run into Sephora, asking, ‘What do I do? What do I do?’ ” While millions jump-started the holiday shopping season this year, others are equally panicked, knowing they still have a lengthy list of gifts to buy – evidenced this week by the frenzy experienced at area department stores like J.C. Penney and the Louis Joliet Mall.

“Diamond studs always make a lovely gift for women.

That’s what I would recommend. Right now, you do see that frenzy of the men or the dads coming in with the kids trying to fulfill the list and figuring out the best item,” Buchas said.

A spending study released Dec. 15 by the National Retail Federation found that as of that day, 90 percent of Americans had not yet finished their holiday shopping.

The average holiday shopper in the U.S. had completed just over half of his or her shopping, similar to the 52.9 percent seen this time last year, according to the study.

At the same time, about 10 percent – or 22.6 million people – were finished. That means 90 percent of holiday shoppers still have gifts, food, decorations and other holiday items to buy, according to NRF. The biggest excuse offered by those who waited until the last minute to shop?

Nearly 45 percent said they are still weighing choices between gifts, while 22 percent are waiting on the best deals for merchandise, according to the NRF survey. About 1 in 5 people admitted they are procrastinators.

Stephanie Trusty of Joliet browsed Tuesday the women’s athletic clothing section for a last-minute gift idea for her mother.

“I’m just looking around to see if anything catches my eye,” Trusty said.

Trusty, who said she was also shopping for herself, hardly made excuses Tuesday for her procrastination.

“It’s laziness and [lack of] time,” Trusty said. “All I’ve basically got are gift cards.

My mom is easy to shop for but I just found out that my parents spent a lot more on everyone so I felt bad. I figured I could get one more thing for her.”

‘Until the very end’

“It’s busy. Very busy. The trend is customers do come out all the way up until the very end. It seems the closer it gets to Christmas, the busier it gets,” Loula said.

Retailers heavily rely on shoppers to whip out their pocketbooks this time of year, he said.

“The holiday season is still the busiest season of the year. For us, this is the best time of the year,” he said.

Loula reluctantly admitted he had one last gift to buy someone – but for who and what, he wouldn’t say.

“I can’t tell you that because she’ll find out,” he said.

Back inside J.C. Penney, Dave Springer of Godley, was peering through several glass casings along the counter containing jewelry.

He walked back and forth between several of them, seemingly undecided on what to get his stepdaughter Erica.

“She’s the hardest one to buy for. I’m pretty much done otherwise,” Springer said. “This was kind of a last-minute thing, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ ”

Funeral services were 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.

Rev. Tyson Graber officiated. Visitation was from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services. Private family burial will be held at a later date.

She was born November 21, 1946 in Ottawa, the daughter of Sigfred “Sheik” and Katheryn (Jones) Gilbertson. She married Robert Dewayne “Bob” Horner on August 17, 1968 in Marseilles.

She is survived by her mother, Katheryn Gilbertson of Marseilles; her husband, Robert Dewayne “Bob” Horner of Streator; a son, Jeff (Staci) Horner of Streator; and grandchildren, Cahill, Caden and Cambri Horner all of Streator.

She was preceded in death by her father, Sigfred “Sheik” Gilberston; and her father and mother in law, Bob and Hettie Horner.

Born and raised in Marseilles she attended Marseilles Grade School and graduated from Marseilles High School.

She worked through the years in various clerical positions for Streator National Bank, Union Bank, Carriage House and Media Com from where she retired. She was of the Methodist faith.

Marcia and her husband Bob were very active with the Streator Elks Club for many years.

Marcia’s grandchildren were her life and she loved attending their many different sporting and dance activities and just being around them as much as she could. She also adored her grand-dogs.

She will be dearly missed by her loving family and close friends.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Elk’s Crippled Children’s Fund.

Prominent trial lawyer, UT mega-donor Jamail dies at 90

By WILL WEISSERT The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas – Joe Jamail, a swashbuckling, billionaire trial lawyer who toppled Texaco in court and so lavished the University of Texas with donations that his name adorns its iconic football field, has died at age 90.

Spokesman Kevin Mortesen said Wednesday that UT Athletic Director Mike Perrin was informed of the death by a close family friend who was with Jamail Tuesday night.

Mortesen said no cause of death had been confirmed.

University President Gregory Fenves said via Twitter that UT had “lost a great friend” and added in a subsequent statement that Joe and late wife Lee Jamail “supported academics and athletics, aspiring for UT to be the best university in the country with the highest values of integrity and service.”

Football coach Charlie Strong tweeted that Jamail was “a true Longhorn Legend.”

Representatives at Jamail’s Houston law firm did not return a series of messages seeking more details, and his family couldn’t be reached for comment.

Known as “The King of Torts,” Jamail was famous for a down-home style that included peppering depositions and even courtroom appearances with curse words and other vulgarities. He represented Pennzoil in a dispute with Texaco and won a colossal $10.5 billion verdict in 1987 that drove Texaco into bankruptcy.

A jury ruled that Texaco interfered with Pennzoil’s plans to acquire Getty Oil. “He was one of the finest attorneys the world has ever known, a Texan who loved his state and his Texas Longhorns,” former Secretary of State James Baker said in a statement. “Few have told truth as straightforward and with more force than Joe. And certainly no one has ever

The premise of Pennzoil’s case was that a handshake and a person’s word was as good as a written contract, and that Texaco violated that rule by plucking Getty from Pennzoil’s grasp. Texaco contended Getty had invited it to bid and that there was no valid contract between Pennzoil and Getty because all the papers had not been signed by the appropriate parties.

Attorney’s fees, including Jamail’s, came to about $400 million. At the time, Jamail declined to reveal his share, saying with a grin: “I’ll spend (the money) on the important things like whiskey

and women.”

He gave millions to UT, his alma mater, and the Longhorns play on Joe Jamail Field inside Austin’s Royal-Memorial Stadium.

“Joe Jamail was a giant of a man, who made a huge impact in all facets of life,” Perrin said in a statement.

Former UT football coach Mack Brown called Jamail “a friend, mentor, confidant, advisor.”

“Joe was one in a million,” Brown said in a statement.

“He was frank, direct and at times crass, but most importantly, caring and giving.”

In 1995, Forbes magazine ranked Jamail as the nation’s No. 1 trial lawyer, with $90

million in earnings the previous year and a then-personal wealth of $800 million. He said when asked about money the following year that it’s “just paper if you pile it up.”

“There’s no fun just having it,” Jamail said. “The fun is seeing someone have an opportunity.”

Jamail and his wife also gave millions to Rice University, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and to the Baylor College of Medicine, among many other charitable organizations and academic institutions. Lee Jamail died in 2007 after 57 years of marriage.

There was no immediate word on funeral arrangements.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Most city parks in Wilmington now are entirely tobacco-free, thanks to two local high school students’ advocacy and a supportive city council.

Members of the council earlier this month unanimously passed an ordinance that prohibits the use of all tobacco products, including, but not limited to, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, pipes, cigars and chewing tobacco, according to a Will County Health Department news release.

Parks that will be 100 percent tobacco-free include Northcrest, Veterans Memorial and Brookside.

Under the new ordinance, the north and south parks within the Wilmington Island Park District will not be completely tobacco free, but both parks will have tobacco-free zones, including athletic fields, restrooms, playgrounds and concession and spectator areas, according to the release.

Two Wilmington High School students – including Elizabeth Palkoska, 18 – have for some time been advocating for tobacco-free parks. They observed smokers’ park activity, conducted surveys and presented findings several times to the council, Palkoska said.

“We thought this would be the best thing for the community,” she said. “I know smokers in Wilmington aren’t happy with it, but this wasn’t for

them. We surveyed youth and they said they wanted to see a tobacco-free park.”

City Administrator Tony Graf said Monday the students were key to the ordinance’s passage.

At one meeting, the teenagers even brought to the council a bag filled with used cigarette butts found within various parks.

“The fact that this will cut back on litter, too ... that really resonated with aldermen,” Graf said. “It really came down to the presentations and the information they provided.

It seemed like the right thing to do.”

The students were representing Reality Illinois, an anti-tobacco campaign focused

on policy change, secondhand smoke and tobacco industry manipulation. The campaign was created by the Illinois Department of Public Health and local health departments.

Will County Health Department Executive Director John Cicero said in the news release the teens deserve credit for their diligence and advocacy.

“They were involved every step of the way. The health department congratulates them, the city council and everyone who has helped make this ordinance reality. Wilmington is now a healthier community,” Cicero said.

Morris offense can’t get going in loss

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com PLANO – No matter how much work and preparation takes place during practice, when a basketball team scores just one field goal and four points total in two quarters, it’s going to be hard for that team to win.

The Morris boys basketball team suffered just that fate Wednesday night in the first round of the 53rd annual Plano Christmas Classic, as the Redskins made just one field goal in the second and third quarters combined and had just four points in those two frames. That allowed Sandwich, coached by former Seneca standout player Brennan

Callahan, to build up a 36-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter en route to a 44-27 win.

“Our flaws were evident,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “We didn’t take care of the ball very well, we don’t have much of a post scoring threat, and we didn’t defend the perimeter.

“But the most embarrassing thing is the lack of effort and mental toughness and ability to play together as a team. It was an embarrassing game for us, and I apologize to anyone who made the trip up here to see us play like that.

We need to be both mentally and physically tougher.”

Morris (4-5), which continues tournament play against Somonauk at 6:30 p.m. Satur-

day, was able to keep the game close in the first quarter. A 3-pointer by Matt Shaw tied the game at 5, and a steal and layup by Aurelius Lennon-Rios tied it at 7 before a short jumper by Tyler Spiezio, who led the Redskins with six points, gave Morris a 9-7 lead. Sandwich’s Sam Morgan scored the final two baskets of the first quarter, however, giving the Indians an 11-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

Then, the cold snap hit.

Morris managed just one point in the second quarter – a free throw by Tommy Balentine with 1:29 remaining – as Jackson Smith scored the first seven points of the quarter for Sandwich for an 18-9 lead.

Smith led all scorers with 19 points, while Morgan and teammate Zac Dabbert each scored eight points.

The Redskins committed a multitude of turnovers in the second quarter, thanks in large part to the defense of Sandwich’s guards.

“We knew their guards keep the pressure on and keep coming after you,” Blumberg said. “It’s not like our guys don’t work hard and get after it in practice. They do. It just hasn’t transferred over to the game court very well yet.”

Morris went nearly six minutes into the third quarter before Spiezio finally scored its first field goal since the first quarter with 2:06 to play in the third. By then, Sand-

wich had amassed a 32-21 lead and went on to score the final four points of the third.

The Redskins then scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, one more than they had the entire first three quarters, getting four points from Jordan Miracle and 3-pointers from Lennon-Rios and Trevor Mathis.

In earlier action Wednesday, Coal City dropped a 5329 decision to Yorkville. Keegan Clampitt led the Coalers with 11 points. The game was tied at 13 after one quarter, but Yorkville outscored the Coalers 11-2 in the second quarter to take a 24-13 lead into halftime and extended the lead to 40-21 by the end of the third.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: MORRIS 37, SANDWICH 22

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com After an 0-3 start at the Ottawa Christmas Classic, the Morris girls’ basketball team finished strong in the 11th place game with a 37-22 victory over Sandwich on Wednesday.

With the win, Morris improved to 3-10 overall entering its next game on Dec. 30 at Providence.

Sandwich capped 2015 with a 4-9 overall record.

“We are leaving with a win, and that’s good, but this whole season has been a work in progress,” Morris coach Katie Carey said.

“We’ve been plagued by the injury bug and we are still trying to recover from that ... but in that time, everyone has stepped up. Hopefully, it will all start to come together in January.”

Morris’ biggest spark came from junior guard/ forward Meghan Smith, who scored 22 of the Redskins’ 37 points.

They also were led by Meghan Jurak’s 10 points. “(Smith) has really stepped up ... hopefully that will continue,” Carey said. “We’ve been thrilled with how well she’s been doing.”

After Sandwich scored the first three points of the game, Morris went on a 9-0 run, led

by Jurak’s six points.

The Indians scored the final seven points of the quarter, and led 10-9 after eight minutes of action.

Morris, however, held Sandwich scoreless in the second after outscoring the Indians 11-0.

Smith’s 3-pointer started the second half scoring for Morris, after a bucket from Sandwich’s Ashley Guilinger, Smith scored six points as part of the Redskins’ 8-0 run.

Entering the final frame, Morris led 31-14 after a pair of free throws from Sandwich’s Rachel Goodin with no time left in the third quarter.

Morris’ largest lead of the game was 19 points twice, including at the start of the fourth quarter after Jurak’s bucket pushed the Redskins ahead 33-14 with 6:13 left in the game.

Sandwich then went on a 7-0 run that reduced the lead to 33-21 with under two minutes to play.

“We had a very good first quarter, but then we started forcing things,” Sandwich coach Randy Malloy said.

“We tried to hang with them for the most part in the second half, but in the end, they didn’t quit ... (Morris’) offensive rebounds got to us, and in the first half, a lot of their baskets were off second-chance opportunities.”

Morris started the tournament Saturday with two losses to Lincoln-Way West (58-31) and Metamora (43-20).

On Tuesday, Rockford East defeated the Redskins, 52-35.

In today’s deal, South has to guess what to do at trick one. True, it is only one deal in a lifetime of contracts, but partner will be very happy if you take the correct one small step.

South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest heart. If you were declarer, how would you plan the play?

In the auction, South’s redouble promised at least 10 high-card points.

Next, note West’s one-heart advance.

From the logic of the auction, he was known to hold a very weak hand. He was right to bid because he had a definite preference among the three unbid suits.

South’s one-no-trump rebid showed 10-12 points. North, adding one point for his good five-card suit, jumped to game.

South starts with only three top tricks: one heart and two clubs. He can establish four winners in diamonds and three in spades, but that involves losing the lead twice, and he might concede those two aces and three hearts.

The key decision is this: How many hearts did West start with? If four, South must win the first trick and go about his business. If five, declarer must duck the first trick and duck the second heart trick before driving out those aces, which must be held by East.

It is a guess, but West is more likely to have five than four because he bid the suit. With only four, he might have passed over the redouble to let his partner choose a suit. But it is close.

Opt for knee replacement sooner rather than later Dear Dr. K: I have osteoarthritis that’s gotten worse over the past few years. My doctor has explained the pros and cons of knee replacement, but it seems like the timing is up to me. How will I know when the time is right to replace my joint?

Dear Reader: If your experience with a knee replacement is like that of most of my patients, you’ll know when the time is right only after the time has passed. I’ve rarely met a person who had a knee or a hip replacement who did not say, after the surgery, “I should have had the surgery long before I finally did.”

That surely was my experience with hip replacement due to osteoarthritis. Looking back, I should have had the surgery at least two years

It’s a simple question to ask yourself: Are other, non-surgical treatments giving you enough relief? Or despite the treatments, are you having to restrict your life in ways that make you unhappy?

No one likes to face surgery, so you can kid yourself that your life is not restricted that badly and postpone considering surgery.

For me, it suddenly became clear after years of denial. I was on a vacation in a wonderful city, and I wanted to spend several hours walking. But after a few

blocks, my hip hurt so much that I just couldn’t. That was the moment I said to myself: Enough is enough.

You may want to consider knee replacement sooner rather than later if one or more of the following statements applies to you: • You are unable to complete normal daily tasks without help.

• You have significant pain daily.

• Pain keeps you awake at night despite the use of medications.

• Nonsurgical approaches – such as medications, the use of a cane and physical therapy – have not relieved your pain.

• Less complicated surgical procedures (such as knee arthroscopy) are unlikely to

help.

• Pain keeps you from walking or engaging in other activities.

• Pain doesn’t stop when you rest.

• You can’t bend or straighten your knee.

• You are suffering severe side effects from the medications for your joint symptoms.

The ideal candidate for joint replacement surgery is in good general health and not overweight.

During joint replacement surgery, the surgeon removes damaged bone and joint tissue. He or she then replaces it with an artificial joint made of metal or ceramic.

Together, you and your doctor must weigh the benefits and risks of joint replacement. Keep in mind that the

average artificial joint lasts for about 15 to 20 years.

Knee replacements work well for many people. Still, you need to have realistic expectations about what joint replacement surgery will and won’t do for you. A new knee should help you return to normal activities for your age.

But you won’t be able to do more than you could before osteoarthritis interfered with your activities.

The major consistent benefit of joint replacement is substantial relief from pain.

My hip replacement was 14 years ago. I haven’t had a day of pain since.
