Preceded in death by her parents, James and Bernice Kinsella; her brother, Lawrence; and sister-inlaw, Idan Kinsella; and her most beloved sister, Celeste Kinsella.

Survived by her brother, Don (Lou Ann) Kinsella; her only daughter, Mary Beth Kinsella; her loving grandchildren, James (Alyssa), Justin (Rhiannon), Jessica and Jeremy Larkin; her beloved great-grandchildren; as well as her dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Marjorie spent her childhood in Joliet; she was the third of four children from an Irish Catholic family. Later in life, Marjorie built and shared a home with her cherished sister, Celeste, and her daughter, Mary Beth. Marjorie was an avid business woman who ventured into many different

occupations during her years. She attended St. Francis Academy. For several years, she and her sister ran a small popular boutique called the Country House Boutique and Tea Room out of their home. After retirement, Marjorie was always an on-the-go character who enjoyed her time with her dogs, bird watching, but most importantly spending time with her daughter and her large family. She was an extremely enthusiastic, big-hearted individual who centered her life on family.

She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Funeral Services for Marjorie J. Kinsella will be Saturday, December 27, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to St. Mary Catholic Church, Minooka for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment St. Mary Cemetery, Minooka. A luncheon will follow services at Mary Beth’s home at 26262 W. Silver Stream Dr. Channahon, IL 60410. Visitation Friday, 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pedestrian hit by car in Morris MORRIS – A pedestrian was hit by a car Tuesday morning in Morris.

A car driven by a 48-year-old

Morris woman struck a 58-yearold Morris man just before 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Division and Main streets, according to Morris Deputy Police Chief John Severson.

The pedestrian was taken to Morris Hospital for what appeared to be injuries that were not life-threatening, Severson said.

The Coal City Community Unit School District 1, village of Diamond, village of Coal City, Coal City Fire Protection District, Coal City Public Library District and the Coal City Police Department have combined forces and enlisted the help of Gordon and Cathy Milne, who formerly ran the Coal City Clothes Closet, to start Help for Hope – bringing hope to those in need.

“Our department chair for student services brought up that the holidays were coming up and that the clothes closet had always serviced people in our community and asked what we were going to do now,” said Kent Bugg, superintendent of Coal City schools.

“We have great organizations in the Morris area, but not much in Coal City.”

Bugg said he feels an organization that can help with food, day-to-day needs and can address the issues of the working poor is desperately needed in his district, where one in every three children is living in poverty.

“In the last 10 years we went from nine percent to over 30 percent low-income students,” Bugg said. “We see families in need every day.”

He said students can’t think about learning math and reading when they are worried about basic needs like food.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said she was aware of the Coal City Clothes Closet, but didn’t realize the gap in services it filled for residents in the area.

“My board supports the start of this organization and we will be giving a donation in the future,” she said. “My

Gordon Milne said by targeting the working poor, the organization also realizes it needs to be flexible to accommodate those who have jobs but still need help.

“We are a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week operation, right now no other organization that makes services available to the working poor offers that,” Gordon Milne said. “The hours need to be conducive to those who work.”

The facility has regular hours each week from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Thursdays, and 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, with other times available by appointment.

Kernc said the around-theclock services is something that interested her. She said knowing that if a traveler was passing by on Interstate 55 and found themselves in Diamond in need of care, the Milne’s could be called and the traveler could get help with gas and food to get on their way.

Bugg said the leaders are setting up a nonprofit organization to operate the services and the board will be made up from the community leaders

Annual Christmas dinner to be served again at Turtle’s Tap If you go

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Turtle’s Tap restaurant in Morris is hosting its annual Christmas dinner again where anyone who would like to grab a bite to eat with a side serving of Christmas spirit is invited to come.

This is the 18th time owner Kevin “Turtle” Krople has hosted the dinner, which is paid for by the patrons throughout the year who toss coins into the lobby fountain.

“It’s not about finances,” Krople said. “It’s about family and being together on Christmas.”

The meal will include turkey, mashed potatoes, beans, pumpkin pie and more. It is

Waverly St. in Morris n WHEN: Dinner is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Christmas Day. Volunteers can arrive between 10 to 10:30 a.m. n COST: Free free to anyone who would like to attend.

The meal is not run by restaurant staff, however. It’s all volunteer-staffed, from the planning down to the cooking, serving and cleaning up.

Krople said the restaurant also is seeking volunteers who can help serve, clean off tables, and wrap and deliver

gifts to all the patrons.

The restaurant served more than 300 people last year and has served more than 400 in the past.

Each guest who comes is treated to a gift by one of the many volunteer elves working.

In addition to the coins from the fountain, some guests make a donation on Christmas Day to go toward next year’s meal, and others drop off gifts and wrapping paper prior to the event.

The holiday meal is not offered at the restaurant’s original Dwight location, only in the Morris location.

Krople said no reservations are required – people just need to show up ready for some good food.

“When I started as mayor, Route 6 was two lanes of traffic, we had a trailer court at one end of town and farm fields at the other,” he said.

He said the village has seen a large amount of growth and it’s battled a time when residential growth burdened its school districts, but he is happy with all that has been accomplished.

One person has filed a petition to run for the village’s top office in April: current Trustee Missey Schumacher.

6 Anderson appointed superintendent

of public works in Minooka

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka Village Board unanimously approved at a special meeting Monday night the appointment of Ryan Anderson to superintendent of Public Works.

Anderson’s appointment was made official, although he had stepped in as interim superintendent after the untimely death in September of longtime superintendent Rob Tonarelli.

Anderson has served in the role of assistant superintendent of Public Works under Tonarelli for the past year, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

“On behalf of the board we are very pleased Ryan stepped up the last few months with

the passing of Robbie Tonarelli,” Duffy said.

Anderson was previously with the Morris Public Works Department for 13 years, he said.

He was hired as the assistant superintendent with the long-term goal of moving into the superintendent position after Tonarelli retired.

“Of course that came sooner than [I] wanted,” Anderson said.

One of Anderson’s biggest challenges will be seeing the vast majority of the Public Works’ workforce retiring over the next several years.

As with many other municipalities, about 70 percent of Minooka’s Public Works Department will be retiring in about five years. The average age in the department is 58,

Anderson said.

“I need to focus on a direct transition with the next generation of workforce and absorb valuable knowledge from our senior employees,” he said “I look forward to the opportunity to work alongside Mayor Pat Brennan, Dan Duffy and the board of trustees.”

“Patients can get spider veins for a lot of different reasons,” Knowles said. “Some

people are just genetically doomed in this department.”

Other risk factors for spider veins include, weight, occupations that require standing for long periods of time, and pregnancy.

So what can people do?

Sclerotherapy is one option. With the technique, a very fine needle injects a solution directly into the veins causing the vein lining to seal preventing blood flow.

“The body’s natural solution is to reabsorb the vein, which does take some time,” Knowles said. “People can typically see results in a couple months.”

Another option is laser therapy. During the treatment, laser energy passes through the top layer of skin to the targeted blood vessel, causing it to slowly heat up and seal itself.

‘On this day in Bethlehem’ Note to readers: In celebration of Christmas Day, we reprint this passage from the Book of Luke.

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

State has ‘tin ear’ when it comes to airplane fleet SPRINGFIELD – Call it the mother of all perks.

Ordinary schmoes like you and me pile into our cars or board a train when we want to travel elsewhere in Illinois.

A plane ride is just too expensive.

But that’s not how state government’s top honchos look at things.

Folks like Speaker of the House Mike Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and Gov. Pat Quinn are ferried about like chieftains in state-owned executive aircraft.

And they don’t pay for this perk.

We do.

In the many years I’ve been covering the statehouse, one of the most sought after pieces of information each week of legislative session is: When is “Madigan’s plane” taking off?

Madigan staffers and Department of Transportation pilots are milked for this inane piece of minutiae.

Why? Because it’s indicative of when legislative activity will come to a stop and all the reporters, lobbyists and rank-and-file legislators can plan on going home, too.

It’s Springfield, where the world revolves around Madigan.

I’ve always found it amusing

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder that the taxpayer-owned King Air is casually referred to as “Madigan’s plane” not the “state’s plane.”

Last week, Governor-elect Bruce Rauner answered a question about the state’s air fleet this way: “I’m cheap, I do drive. I am going to drive a lot. I don’t believe the taxpayers should be funding that large fleet. I think it’s self-indulgent and unnecessary. … But I’ve said it since Day 1: We’ve got to be responsive to the taxpayers and having the largest fleet in America does not make sense.”

Self-indulgent and unnecessary?

Talk about sticking a thumb in Mike Madigan’s eye.

Flying is an expensive proposition.

It costs $21 for a state employee to take the train between Chicago and Springfield or about $65 for them to drive, based on the mileage reimbursement rate for state lawmakers.

Earlier this year, I calculated out that it costs taxpayers $4,060 when lawmakers or others choose to fly a

six-seat executive airplane between the two cities.

Gov. Pat Quinn used the plane the most, booking 21,134 miles in 2013.

In 2013, Supreme Court justices booked 14,846 miles on the state plane.

In 2013, Illinois lawmakers booked 108,000 miles in the state planes – enough miles to circle the globe four times.

For several years, State Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, has had a bill pending before the Legislature to pare down the state executive air fleet to one plane, which only the governor would use.

But Madigan and his allies have kept the measure bottled up in committee, never to be voted on by lawmakers.

“Sometimes I’ve been ridiculed about this because last year it cost $7 million and we face such a big hole,” Mitchell said. “I think it is an example of state government having a tin ear.”

“We had a stretch there in the third and fourth quarters when we weren’t taking very good shots,” Tollefson said.

“But I think Will’s basket was big for us, not only to score, but it switched the momentum back to our side.

“I was happy for Jack to reach the 1,000-point mark. He’s missed a few games for us, so it was nice to see him come back with a nice game. He knows how to score, that’s for sure.”

PLANO – Early in the fourth quarter of the Newark boys basketball team’s 57-47 win over Forreston on Monday at the Plano Christmas Classic, the Norsemen’s Jack Clausel made a basket. Suddenly, the public address annoucer informed the crowd that Clausel, a 6-foot-7 junior, had just scored his 1,000th career point.

And, if Will Clausel, a 6-4 sophomore, continues to score as he did Tuesday, it won’t be long before he joins Jack in that club.

Will Clausel had 25 points and Jack Clausel scored 17 as the Norsemen played a near-perfect first half en route to the victory. Newark (5-6) shot 7 of 9 from the floor in the first quarter and 13 of 20 in the first half to take a 35-21 lead into halftime.

“We had a real nice first half,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “We ran the offense well, and we executed well. We did have seven turnovers in the first half, but other than that, we scored on 80 percent of our possessions.

“We really didn’t know what to expect out of Forreston. They hadn’t played yet when we had our seeding meeting. But they are a good team.”

The Cardinals may not have known what hit them in the early going, as Newark got 3-pointers from Karter Kunkel and Will Clausel, then an old-fashioned 3-point play by Jack Clausel, to take a 9-2 lead.

Will Clausel had 10 points in the second quarter, including a stretch in which he scored eight consecutive points for Newark, and Schomer opened and closed the quarter with a basket as the Norse took a 35-21 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Forreston’s offense began to pick up, as DeVries, who led the Cardinals with 16 points, scored five in the quarter. Wyatt Kerchner (13 points) also scored five as did Nathan Schneiderman as Forreston outscored Newark, 17-10, to close the gap to 45-38 entering the fourth.

The Cardinals got to within 47-42 with 3:55 to play before Will Clausel drove down the right side and scored, sparking a 6-0 spurt that got the lead back to 53-42.

Arlis’ late bucket boosts Minooka girls to victory STAFF REPORTS FRANKFORT – Survive and advance.

In any tournament, that is the goal for every team. Minooka’s girls basketball team did just that Tuesday afternoon.

Seeing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate, the Indians, behind 5-foot-11 junior Sydney Arlis, rallied past Plainfield South, 59-58, to improve to 2-0 in the Lincoln-Way East High School Medieval Classic play.

With 11.1 seconds left and Plainfield South ahead, 58-57, Arlis drove to the hoop and powered home a bucket that proved to be the game-winner. Arlis finished with a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“My teammates have faith in me to help us win,” Arlis said.

“I wanted the ball, and I was determined to win the game for my teammates, who help me be successful. It was a real exciting game, and we played well in the first half, but then we had a bad stretch in the second half.

Our bench really stepped up for us, and it was a great win. If we can defeat Andrew on Friday, we will play for the tournament championship on Saturday night.”

Minooka led, 36-24, at halftime, when the Cougars mounted a furious comeback. Six-4 junior Ally Fink scored 10 of her 15 points in the third quarter to keep the Cougars close.

Fink added eight rebounds. The fourth quarter featured a longrange artillery show from Cougar sophomore Jaianna Brooks.

Brooks’ first long-range bomb brought the Cougars with in 49-45 with 4:14 left in the game.

Her second 3 of the quarter tied the score at 49 with 3:14 left. Her final 3 of the quarter gave Plainfield South a 54-52 lead with 1:17 left in the contest. Brooks finished with 16 points.

Minooka (9-3) led, 27-11, in the second quarter and 36-24 at the half, behind sophomore Brooke Lynn Bachmann and senior Emily Knaub. Bachmann had 14 points and Knaub added 11 in the first half to give the Indians the commanding halftime lead. Bachmann finished with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Knaub also had 16 points and dished out six assists for the victorious Indians.

On Monday, Minooka beat Andrew, 42-29, as Bachmann and Sydney Arlis each scored 12 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL Seneca 64, Princeton 60: After falling behind 17-6 after one quarter at the Plano Christmas Classic, the Fighting Irish outscored Princeton, 38-16, in the second and third quarters and held on for the win. Seneca, which will play Morris at 3:30 p.m. on Friday went 6 of 9 from 3-point range in the second half to help key the rally.

Ben Rohder led the way with 21 points, while Ross McCormick scored 18 and Brandon Viken added 13.

St. Bede 68, Coal City 31: In the opening game of the Plano Christmas Classic, the Coalers fell behind 22-4 at the end of the first quarter and could not recover. Matt Long and Keegan Larry W. By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – Bears defensive end Jared Allen will turn 33 in April. His 5.5 sacks are currently a career-low, but as he has done in his career, he has gotten better as the season has gone along, and still shows high effort late in a 5-10 season.

But for someone who reportedly contemplated retirement before signing with the Bears, will he definitely be playing in 2014?

“I always evaluate myself.

I told myself when I came into this league, that if I can’t prepare to give it everything I’ve got, then I’ll walk away whether that’s 12 years or one year,” he said. “So I’ll go back and I’ll self-scout this year. I’m going to heal up from just the bumps and bruises of the year and make evaluations.”

Allen made it clear, however, he “didn’t come here for a one-and-done shot. I know I’ve got a lot of football left in me.”

That means that Sunday’s season finale in Minnesota, where Allen spent his past six seasons, likely won’t be his final game – and he is due an $11.5 million bonus in 2015.

“It’s another game, but it’s always exciting to go back and play against the team you came from,” he said.

Allen arguably had his best game of the season when the Bears beat the Vikings in Week 11, finishing with five tackles and one sack.

Coordinators reflect: Tuesday marked the final press conferences of the season for defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, and DeCamillis was asked if he’s thinking about what could come down next Monday.

“I’m just trying to roll through this thing and try to get ready for Minnesota,” he said. “You have quiet times where you think about that stuff. But this isn’t a quiet time right now, I got to go back upstairs and figure out a way to cover these guys this week because they’re definitely explosive.”

Tucker, whose defense played much better in the loss to Detroit, but is still among the franchise’s worst units statistically, did add a bit of levity regarding the Bears fans in his family.

“My wife is from Chicago.

She’s from the South Side and so her mom, her whole family is here. So they all want to win,” he said. “They’re all Bears fans. There’s a little bit of, you know, ‘You spend all that time over there and that’s the best you can do?’ type-of-thing.”

Tucker joked that when he meets his wife’s uncle after every game, “it’s like my first media session of the week.”
