The Morris city clerk position and an alderman seat in each of the four wards are on the April 7 ballot.

A primary race will be held Feb. 24, and petitions were due to the clerk’s office at the end of last month to run in the primary as a Republican or a

Democrat. Independent candidate petitions were due by 5 p.m. Monday.

Robert Strandel pulled a petition as an independent for the 3rd Ward open seat on the Morris City Council at the end of November. He filed last week, City Clerk Carol Adair said Monday.

Strandel was the only independent candidate to pull a petition, she said.

Additional candidates for the 3rd Ward include newcomers Republican Zora Baron and Democrat Jeffrey Wachowski, who returned petitions in November.

In the city clerk’s race, incumbent Adair is seeking to retain her position. Mary Callahan filed to run against

Along with the new loca-

tion, the YMCA and Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers have formed a partnership.

Under the multi-year plan, they will work together to develop programs and services at the temporary YMCA location in downtown Morris.

Durkin said the organizations will operate out of the facility together, with the hospital moving some of its senior fitness classes to the YMCA as well as offering other services to the members.

“We can take care of the

body and they can hold classes like nutrition,” Durkin said.

Donated house set ablaze to help firefighters train

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Firefighters in Coal City trained in an actual burning house Saturday, as they set fire to a home donated by Margaret Ruffatti for training purposes.

“The only way to get true training is in that type of situation,” Chief James Sheldon of the Coal City Fire Protection District said Monday. “They get to see the fire behavior and experience the smoke.”

Sheldon said the Underwriters Laboratories, a global independent safety science company, has done studies about the amount of oxygen a fire receives and the fire’s reaction to it. The result of those

studies has been a change in protocol when a firefighter pulls up to a burning house.

Typically, firefighters start by opening the front door, but that gives oxygen to the fire, feeding it and causing it to grow. The strengthening fire causes firefighters to get caught in a flashover situation, where heat from a growing fire ignites a large amount of flammable material all at once.

The studies now show they should combat the fire coming out of a window from the outside first before entering and attacking it from the inside.

“We were able to see on Saturday that by putting water to the fire from the outside for 10 to 15 seconds before entering

reduced the temperature inside the room by 400 degrees,” he said. “It showed us that if someone was on the floor, they would probably survive.”

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Terrified of spiders, Susan McDaniel, administrative assistant at the Grundy County Housing Authority in Morris, glanced above her.

Hanging directly above her was a large, fuzzy, Halloween-decoration-type spider.

On another occasion, while checking the resident mailbox, Susan slid her hand into a mass of rubber spiders.

“I screamed and mail went flying all over the room,” Susan said.

Alfred Charles “Bud” Weigell, 78, a resident at Saratoga Tower, had planted the spiders, but Susan wasn’t upset. It was friendly teasing to Bud, who – over time – had become Susan’s good friend.

“When he came in to pay his rent, he was pretty gruff,” she

said, “but I just killed him with kindness until he opened up to me.”

During their seven-year friendship, Bud made copies of music for Susan that they both enjoyed, talked with her often and threw her a surprise birthday party. If Bud was not feeling well – and he had a number of health issues, Susan said – she would run his errands.

“He knew a lot,” Susan said.

“He liked to argue with people about things – particularly HUD rules – but he was on top of everything.”

Bud’s vast knowledge shone through his passion for model railroads and his detailed knowledge of both the Rock Island and Norfolk & Western Railways. A 2007 Morris Daily Herald story detailed Bud’s 4-by-8-foot HO-scale model

MORRIS – Five people were taken to area hospitals, one by helicopter, with injuries from a two-vehicle crash Sunday on Interstate 80 near Morris.

At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, about a half-mile west of the Route 47 exit, a vehicle slowed down to use the turn-around in the median between the I-80 westbound and eastbound lanes, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. R.A. Caves said Monday.

The vehicle that slowed down was rear-ended by a vehicle behind it.

The first vehicle rolled over and landed in the median. The second vehicle ran off the road, but stayed upright, he said.

There were six people involved in the crash.

One person was transported by helicopter, but no one’s injuries were life-threatening, Caves said.

Bob Wills, deputy chief with the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District, said Monday that one person refused medical treatment.

Westbound traffic was shut down for more than three hours. Eastbound was closed, as well, but not from as long. It was opened up shortly after the helicopter took flight, Caves said.

Morris was assisted by the Minooka and Coal City fire districts, as well as Channahon, which covered a Morris call while they were at the scene, Wills said.

State police are still investigating the incident.

Bud had peopled those buildings with great detail, to make places such as the post office, radio shack and Granny’s Diner appear realistic.

Jean Davidson, one of Bud’s neighbors, said she brought her great-grandchildren to see Bud’s trains.

“He had thousands of dollars tied up in it,” Jean said. “It was amazing.”

Bud, Jean said, also bought a windmill and the swings that sat outside Saratoga Tower.

He’d bring Jean strawberries when he bought them on sale, and if he ordered a pizza, he’d bring a portion of it to Jean, insisting he couldn’t finish it.

Each year, Bud bought a large, live Christmas tree – along with the lights and ornaments – for the alcove on his floor. Two of the residents would decorate it, Jean said.

Although trees were set up in the main area downstairs, the sixth floor at Saratoga was the only floor that had its own, Jean added. This year, she said, Bud put it up early, a few days before Thanksgiving. Bud was 78 when he died Thanksgiving Day. “He must have known he was in bad shape,” Jean said, thinking of Bud setting up the tree earlier than was his habit.

In his will, Bud specified that the Grundy County Housing Authority would dispose of his possessions, said Brent Newman, CEO of the housing authority. If the possessions are sold, proceeds are to go to the GCHA Resident Council, Brent added.

Nancy Murley, GCHA resident council president, said Bud was a quiet man, one who didn’t brag about his kind deeds, his past or his family – if he had any, she added.

“Evidently, he decided the residents were his family,” Nancy said.

Brent feels Bud’s life is an extraordinary example of paying less attention to a person’s words and more to his actions.

Bud’s words could be fierce, but his actions demonstrated how deeply he cared for the residents of Saratoga Tower, Brent said.

“He was my friend,” Brent said, “and I’m going to miss him.”

Most firefighters learn in a burn tower, which is a concrete building used for training. Sheldon said an actual house fire is much different from the burn tower because of the materials it is built from.

“It was a great opportunity for us to be able to work in this type of environment,” said Brian Nash, a firefighter paramedic with the district. “To be able to train with live fire in a true building and not a burn tower has added to my knowledge as a firefighter.”

BUSINESS Not too late to encourage family to donate

By JULIE BUCK Executive director of the Community Foundation of Grundy County MORRIS – Is it OK if I write a mellow column this month?

It’s the time of year when I come to the office to rest. With all of the hustle and bustle of Christmas, the office is the one place where it’s quiet and peaceful ... this week at least!

First let’s follow up on our November philanthropy experiment. Did you give the kids and/or grandkids money at Thanksgiving to give away

by Christmas? Have you had that wrap-up conversation yet? What charities did they choose? Why? What do your kids care about? Hunger? Animals? Clean water? Making sure others have food and gifts for Christmas?

If you missed it at Thanksgiving, you can still try it – it’s your family, after all. Maybe give them money at Christmas to give away and then gather

them at a family dinner in January or February to talk about their charity choices. Or save it until Easter. Or the summer family reunion. Charity and philanthropy can be a yearround conversation. When you take action is up to you!

The real question is, did they enjoy giving? If so, how do you keep that spirit alive and growing?

I know one couple who holds back birthday gifts until the child/grandchild gives a gift to charity – with Grandma and Grandpa’s money. Do for others before you receive for yourself. That’s a good habit to adopt.

To keep the spirit growing in your family, please consider setting up a fund here at the Community Foundation of Grundy County. A donor-advised fund helps your family build and leave a legacy.

To set one up, make a gift of cash or appreciated stock to the Community Founda-

tion. You get the immediate tax deduction and then you and your family make grants from it over time and at your convenience.

Donors can name their fund, which helps build a family legacy. They can also designate children and grandchildren to make grants from the fund after their passing. And if the fund is endowed, it will live forever, giving multiple generations the opportunity to make grants from it – without giving away their own assets.

And don’t worry about having family spread across the United States. You can grant from your fund to any U.S.-based charity, even if they do international work. If your grandkids live in another state and have a favorite charity in their town, you can make grants to it.

A donor-advised fund works for families of all ranges of wealth and assets. A non-endowed fund can be set

up with a minimum of $10,000; an endowed fund has no minimum amount to start. You can fund a donor-advised fund with one large charitable gift or start small and add to it at any time. You can even make your fund the beneficiary of insurance policies and other estate assets.

Has your family had a year with unusually high income?

Maybe you sold a property or company or earned record profits. Offset those taxes with a gift to charity – and a donor-advised fund fits that definition. Give to Uncle Sam or give to charity!

For wealthier families, donor-advised funds are great alternatives to private family foundations. We do all of the annual administration and the fund eliminates the need for your family to file mountains of paperwork with the IRS and meet the annual grantmaking minimums. Naming rights to the fund assure that your

family gets the credit ... and we do all the work!

If the end of the tax year has crept up on you, you can still make something happen. We are open on New Year’s Eve and can quickly set up a new fund for you. If you are interested, please contact us for a “New Fund Questions” form to review, ponder and complete.

Ironically Trestman was less than thrilled when asked how he felt about Gould’s comments.

“What I’ve always talked to our players about is keeping those kind of comments in-

house, where we can talk about them in-house, so that’s how I feel about it. I’m not going to comment on Robbie because I didn’t hear the comments. Your interpretation may be what it is, I’m not questioning it, but my focus with the team is that if they have something on their mind to come in and talk about it, and guys have, in a real positive fashion.”

Gould did not call for a change at head coach, but, given the chance, he didn’t offer Trestman an endorsement either.

Asked what he thought about the possibility Trestman will be fired, Gould answered, “It’s not like you can avoid the noise. Realistically, it’s part of the game. It’s how it goes.

You’re in the business of winning football games, and if you don’t produce, you get cut. You don’t win, you get fired, that is usually how it goes.”

I’m not sure where the Bears are going with Phil Emery’s job, but I suspect Trestman’s demise was sealed several weeks ago.

If not, you almost have to believe Gould had the last word Monday.

Clausen diagnosed with concussion Cutler to start finale at Vikes

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Jimmy Clausen will not play in the Bears’ season finale against the Vikings because of a concussion suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Lions.

Jay Cutler will return to the starting role, coach Marc Trestman confirmed.

The Bears announced Monday that Clausen exhibited “no signs of [a] concussion” immediately after a helmet-to-helmet hit from Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah “or during the final four plays of the drive.” He continued to show no symptoms on the sideline and passed testing by team physicians after the game.

Clausen was told to contact athletic trainers if he had any problems later in the day, and he experienced delayed symptoms Sunday evening. Clausen was then taken to a hospital and diagnosed with a concussion.

Often this year, when a Bears player has been diagnosed with a concussion, the team has

waited the week before ruling him out. Trestman said doctors “said that it would be best that he not play.”

As for Cutler getting the nod instead of sixth-round rookie David Fales, Trestman said Cutler gives the Bears “the best chance this week,” and that Fales will be the backup.

“David has worked very hard. He has cerJay Cutler tainly not had the opportunities because [of] the opportunities that Jimmy’s had throughout the season,” Trestman said, “... but certainly Jay gives us the best option. He was the quarterback when we played Minnesota in the first game, he’ll be the quarterback this Sunday and David will be in a backup position.”

In a win over the Vikings on Nov. 16 at Soldier Field, Cutler completed 31-of-43 passes for 330 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He had a passer rating of 98.0.

In his first start, Clausen completed 23-of-39 passes for 181 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, good for a passer rating of 77.0 in the 20-14 loss to Detroit.

Trestman said last week he was looking for Clausen to give

the Bears a spark.

While Clausen didn’t get a lot of help Sunday from receivers – namely Alshon Jeffery, who had a collection of drops – Trestman said he had liked the way Clausen progressed as the day went on.

“As the game went on, [Clausen] continued to get more comfortable,” Trestman said. “...

We didn’t necessarily have all of us help him the way we could have today, but I will look more at the tape and have better answers ahead.”

LAKE FOREST – Marc Trestman confirmed Monday that defensive end Willie Young tore the Achilles tendon in his left leg during Sunday’s loss to the Lions.

It was a noncontact injury, and Young was seen wearing a boot in the locker room after the game. Trestman had no timetable on when the surgery would be or how long it will take Young to get back to full health.

In his first season with the Bears after signing a threeyear, $9 million contract in March, Young led the team with 10 sacks. He finished with 12 tackles for loss, 11 QB hits, two passes defensed and one forced fumble.

“He has kind of been an inspirational leader,” Trestman said. “You guys know him in the locker room. He’s a charismatic guy. He keeps people up.

He’s fun to be around. He’s a guy who is always up and around the building and has played well and gotten better throughout the season. He’ll be missed on Sunday certainly.”

BEARS EXTRA The other shoe dropped on Coach Marc Trestman on Monday when one of the Bears’ most respected and veteran leaders, placekicker Robbie Gould, vented his frustrations publicly.

In a regular weekly appearance on AM-670 The SCORE, Gould seemed to surprise even hosts Matt Spiegel and his former teammate and close friend Patrick Mannelly with his frank assessment of what a mess the Bears’ lockerroom is.

“This honestly is not the Bear way,” Gould said. “This whole season’s not the Bear way. Pointing fingers, things getting out of the locker room – that’s not the Chicago Bear way.

OTTAWA – There’s nothing like a good defense.

Most basketball coaches will say that, and Morris girls coach Kate Carey is no exception. For the second straight game Monday afternoon, the Redskins held an opponent to single digits in the first half and cruised to a victory.

Morris led Sandwich, 27-9, at halftime in the ninth-place game at the Ottawa Tournament, and came away with a 44-33 win. Earlier in the day, Morris beat Kankakee, 32-15, after holding the Kays scoreless in the second quarter and taking a 15-7 lead into halftime.

“Defense was a big focus for us today,” Carey said.

“We knew if we held the other team’s score down, then we would be able to score enough to win.”

In the first half of the win against Sandwich, it was Jessica Ponce doing the scoring for Morris (11-4), delivering eight of her 11 points. Mya Shannon scored all six of her points in the first half. Leona Burton took over in the second half, when she scored nine of her team-best 13 points, while Emily Burling had seven points.

Meghan Smith had three and Kayla Cryder and Jessica Jurak had two to round out the balanced Morris attack.

“All season long, we’ve been a well-balanced team,” Carey said. “We always seem to have someone pick up the slack. It might not be the same person every night, but that’s good. Everyone knows how to score if they have to.”

STAFF REPORTS METAMORA – The young Morris wrestling team represented itself well Saturday at the Metamora Holiday Tournament. The Redskins again finished in the top half of the tournament, taking seventh out of 15 teams.

“This was a solid finish for a young team,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said. “We are starting to learn and the young guys are getting better every time out. We just have to keep hanging in there against our very tough schedule.”

Morris was paced by freshman Cody Baldridge, who won the 160-pound championship in overtime over Byron’s Brandon Elsbury.

“Cody had his best day of wrestling to this point in the season,” Lanning said. “If he can peak at the right time, there’s no telling how far he can go.”

A.J. Vota finished second at 152, while Emmet Chouinard, who also represented Morris at 152, placed third.

Loss leaves ‘gaping hole’ in state gov’t There’s little doubt that the late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka would’ve continued her straight-talking ways during a Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner administration.

Topinka was “good copy” for reporters. When she criticized a budget or a fiscal position, we listened.

Other Statehouse denizens respected her fiscal smarts as well. If she attacked a proposal, legislators and everyone else under the dome took note.

Rauner showed great deference to Topinka after the election, using her Statehouse suite and giving her chief of staff the authority to hire most of his new employees. I don’t think there’s any question that he grew to truly admire the quirky redhead.

But Topinka had called for a far more gradual reduction to the state’s 2011 income tax hike than Rauner has said he wants. A particularly brutal package of budget cuts or one-time gimmicks proposed

by Rauner next year wouldn’t have gone down too well with her. She was also much more liberal than Rauner admits to.

Topinka was expected to help build bridges between Rauner and organized labor, as well as to Democrats and left-of-center groups she worked with over the years.

Yes, many of us lost a friend this month, but we also lost an experienced, respected politico who could counsel the new and inexperienced governor about how to be a more effective leader, and one who could help nudge him, publicly or privately, to stay on a more humane and fiscally responsible fiscal path. And with Topinka’s passing, I don’t see any of Rauner’s fellow Republicans out there with the power or credibility who will also have the guts to stand up to the guy.

VIEWS Rich Miller Some holes can be patched here and there. Both Republican state legislative leaders have ties to unions, for example. Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno is a former social worker who has championed human services causes.

But neither of those leaders have yet to show much independence from Rauner, whose money had a major impact on House races this year.

For instance, Gov. Pat Quinn, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton have all argued for a special election so that Rauner’s pick for Topinka’s replacement won’t serve beyond 2016. A four-year appointment, they all argue, is just downright undemocratic.

Rauner has claimed an election would be unconstitutional, but the Illinois Constitution clearly says that the appointee serves until the successor is elected and qualified “as may be provided by law.”

The next day, the two legislative leaders, Radogno and House GOP Leader Jim Durkin, released what higher-ups in the attorney general’s office derisively dismissed as a “half baked” legal opinion about why a special election would be unconstitutional.

“There’s a hole in the hearts of the people of this state,” Quinn said at Topinka’s memorial service. That’s true.

But there’s also now a gaping hole in the government which assumes power next month.

Now, though, South ruffed in the dummy, played a spade to his ace (the right play to allow for either opponent holding all four trumps) and ran the club eight. The defenders had no answer. Declarer lost one spade, one diamond and one club.

West was not amused. He pointed out that East could see two minor-suit tricks, so had to hope that West had a spade trick and that they could gain a heart trick. With that in mind, East had to lead a low heart at trick two. West would have covered South’s card as cheaply as possible, and the defenders would have been ahead in the race.

Vasectomy a minor surgical procedure; reversal possible Dear Doctor K: I had a vasectomy many years ago. I’ve since remarried, and my new wife wants to have children. Can my vasectomy be reversed?

Dear Reader: A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is done to make a man sterile (unable to father children).

Normally, sperm – the male reproductive cells that fertilize a woman’s egg -- are made in the testicle. Sperm travel away from the testicle through a tube called the vas deferens. There are two vas deferens, one for each testicle on each side. The vas deferens connect with a reservoir where the sperm is held, ready to be ejaculated during sex. The sperm also mixes with secretions from the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff prostate gland that keep the sperm alive. When the sperm is ejaculated, it travels through another tube, the urethra, inside the penis.

A vasectomy cuts or blocks the vas deferens. Once the vas deferens are cut or blocked, sperm cannot pass from the testicle to the reservoir where semen and secretions from the prostate gland are stored.

During ejaculation, this sperm-containing fluid is ejected through the penis during orgasm. After a vasectomy, a

man continues to have normal ejaculations of semen, but the ejaculate no longer contains sperm. (I’ve put an illustration showing the path of sperm before and after a vasectomy on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

In a traditional vasectomy, the surgeon uses a scalpel to make small incisions in the skin of the scrotum near the base of the penis. (The scrotum is the fleshy sac that contains the testicles.) The incisions allow the surgeon to reach the vas deferens in each testicle.

The vas deferens are cut or blocked to prevent sperm from traveling. The surgeon may cut the vas deferens and tie the ends, burn the tubes with a hot tool, or block them with surgi-

cal clips. The incisions in the scrotum are then closed with two or three small stitches.

The other surgical option, no-scalpel vasectomy, is less invasive. Only tiny incisions are needed. The surgeon makes one or two punctures to access the vas deferens. The puncture is widened slightly, then the surgeon cuts or blocks each vas deferens. The puncture site can be covered with a tiny dressing. No stitches are needed.

A vasectomy is intended to produce permanent sterilization. Special microsurgery can reverse a vasectomy and restore fertility in some cases.

But there are no guarantees that fertility or vasectomy reversal will be successful. Va-

sectomy reversal is a delicate, expensive procedure. And it is only successful in about 60 to 70 percent of cases.

Why would a man want to reverse a vasectomy? Often, a man and woman have fathered all the children they want to have, but want to continue to have sex. So a vasectomy is performed. But then the situation changes. The couple separates, for whatever reason, and the man’s new partner wants to have children. Fortunately, most of the time, the new couple can get their wish.

Sale terms: 25% down of the highest bid by certified funds at the close of the sale payable to The Judicial Sales Corporation. No third party checks will be accepted.
