Virginia “Ginger” Rae Larkin, 75, of Morris, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014, at home with her family by her side. Born in Harrisburg, PA, on April 27, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Nina (Spangenberg) Walden.

Virginia was raised and educated in Wichita, KS. At the age of 17, she moved to Morris. Ginger worked for 38 years at Jefferson/Smurfit, retiring in 2001. She was also union president for many years.

Ginger was a member and volunteer at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She is a cancer survivor since the age of 32. Her hobbies included playing Euchre with her card club and spending time with her

family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, James R. (Karla) Yard, Kevin Yard, Denise (Greg) Gillespie, and Keith Yard, all of Morris; grandchildren, Tara (Jeff) Wilson, Angela (Todd) Crose, Lucinda Yard, Jake (Christy) Yard, Jennifer Murdaugh; Mitchell, Natalie, and Ashton Yard; Chanda (Travis) Kinney, Ginger (Ray) Hollenbeck, Benjamin Radigan; Leah (Dan) Peat; Mark Yard, Christopher (Katie) Yard, and Riley Yard. Also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, William (Alice) Walden of Andover, KS; Mariva Scherck of Bellville, IL; Charles (Margot) Walden of Vancouver, WA; and Sheila Walden of N.E. Prior Lake, MA. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Sr. and Nina Walden; infant son, Kenneth Eugene Yard, II; Kenneth Eugene Yard, and Bernard Larkin; and a sister, Gail Winkler.

The Prairie Singers present a new musical entitled, “Were You There On That Christmas Night?” along with well-known carols to balance the concert.

The series opens at 6:30 p.m. today at the Prairie Creek Library in Dwight. This concert is open to the public with no charge.

The Singers continue to Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Seneca. Both concerts are open to the public with a free will offering.

The following weekend the Singers return to the Ottawa Reddick Mansion ballroom for dinner concerts. Concerts will

be at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 and Dec. 13.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – College student Caitlyn Simpson came home for Thanksgiving, joining her extended family Saturday in the annual Home for the Holidays House Walk.

“I think it’s fun to spend time with family and see the houses on the walk,” Simpson said.

The Home for the Holidays House Walk featured five homes this year. The House Walk committee annually decides what the event’s proceeds will benefit.

Past beneficiaries include the Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice and scholarships. Last year’s proceeds went toward the purchase of the downtown Morris sign on Route 47, said Julie Applegate, Morris Downtown Development Partnership executive director.

Inside the house on Primrose Lane, owned by Linda and Gil Jones, Simpson’s group donned their booties and made their way upstairs.

For Alyssa Schultz, this year’s House Walk was the first of what might become a tradition, as she made her

The house on Primrose wasn’t their first stop. The pair had been to the home of Janet and Dick Olson on Scott School Road north of Morris, where Schultz found her favorite item on the walk.

“I like the old telephone booth in the house,” she said of the Olson home.

The Olson home and the phone booth didn’t just catch Schultz’s eye. Ten-year-old

Grace Lines also found her way into one of the home’s two phone booths.

This was Grace’s first House Walk and she made the rounds with her family for a girls’ day out. Her favorite part of the walk was a sign that caught her eye on the way down to the basement at the Olson home,

MORRIS – The Festival of Trees took place in Morris over the weekend, decorating the Grundy County Historical Society from floor to ceiling and kicking off the holiday season for many.

More than 80 trees and wreaths, donated by local businesses, adorned the inside of the building and were for sale to the highest bidder.

The Festival of Trees is part of the annual Home for the Holidays event held in Morris.

committee and none of this would be possible without them.”

In its 19th year, the festival has grown into a major event and Christmas tradition for many in the area. Mary Ellis, of Coal City, made the trek to bid on some of the holiday decorations and socialize with her friends from the area.

“The trees have gotten better every year,” Ellis said.

“This has become a Christmas tradition. I like the idea that anyone can win some of the decorations.”

Board member Welter appointed as new county chairman

Four newcomers, as well as six incumbents were officially sworn in as board members just before the special board meeting.

Republican Don Neushwander Jr. joins incumbents Republican Millie Dyer and Democrat Ken Iverson in District 1 and Republican Kerri Courtright joins fellow Republicans and incumbents Debra Warning and David Nelson in District 2.

Republican Debra Kinsella ran uncontested in the November election for a vacant seat in District 2 and also was sworn in Monday.

Mike Onorato, a Democrat, joins fellow Democrat incumbent Richard Joyce and Republican incumbent Doug Boresi.

Board members also approved to shorten the number of committees from 14 to 11.

MORRIS – Board members applauded Monday night as David Welter walked to his new chair as Grundy County’s new County Board chairman.

Welter was nominated for chairman at the reorganizational meeting held at the Grundy County Administration Building.

The motion to select Welter as chairman passed with most board members approving the motion except for Frank Halpin, who abstained from voting.

Grundy County has filed a lawsuit against Halpin after Welter brought it to the county’s attention that Halpin allegedly misappropriated funds when Halpin was chairman of the board.

Board member Eric Rasmusson was not present at the time of the vote.

Welter, who has served on the County Board since age 19, said he thinks it’s awesome his colleagues selected him to lead the board and that his experience on the board for the past four years has prepared him for this position.

“After Ron Severson said he wasn’t coming back to the board, I felt I would be the right person to lead the county for the next two years,” said the 23-year-old. “As I’ve sat on the board, I’ve been given more and more responsibilities over the last four years.”

Fellow Republican Eric Rasmusson also put his name in last month for the the top board spot, but only Welter was nominated Monday.

Welter shared laughs with board member Vicki Geiger after the reorganizational meet-

ing.

Geiger said Welter has attended more meetings than any other board member.

“Anytime you elect someone as vice-chair, you hope they have the potential of becoming chairman. He has done that and proved himself,” Geiger said.

Welter served as vice-chairman under Severson.

Welter said he has big plans for the county as the new chairman and that the county has many projects it’s working on and planning to David Welter start.

Nelson, a Republican, said it feels good to be vice-chairman and that he has worked hard for the past 18 months to get elected.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Knutson 65th Wedding Anniversary

Robert and Miriam (nee Runestad) Knutson of Morris, IL will celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary on December 2, 2014. They were married in 1949 by Reverend Don Norheim at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris, IL. They have seven children: Laurel (Colin) Searle of Buena Park, CA; Lynette (Jules) Ostrander of Watford City, ND; LaVeta Knutson (deceased 1982); Roberta (Michael) Smith of Aurora, IL; Ronald Knutson of San Francisco, CA; Ruth (Phillip) McCallister of Fort Mill, SC and Dennis (Karen) Knutson of Newark, IL. They are proud grandparents of 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Knutson lived and worked in the Morris area most of their married life, retiring to Lakeland, FL for 13 years. County officials sworn in to office Monday

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – County officials were ready to take their oath of office Monday morning as they sat with friends and family in the upstairs courtroom at the Grundy County Courthouse.

Newly elected Treasurer Lori Werden, County Clerk Kay Olson, Regional Superintendent of Schools Chris Mehochko and Sheriff Kevin Callahan were all sworn in by Judge Robert Marsaglia.

While Mehochko and Callahan were sworn in to do the job they’ve performed for the past two years, neither had

won an election before, giving them something in common with Werden and Olson.

Callahan was appointed to the position after the sudden death of Sheriff Terry Marketti. He was elected this time around in November. He said he looks forward to the next four years and will do what it takes to run the office in a proficient way.

“We’ll continue to move forward,” Callahan said. “We’ve hired a deputy to fill one of the two open positions and are going to offer another candidate the second position soon.”

MORRIS – The Home for the Holidays House Walk Tea on Saturday in Morris was a time of repose for those who toured the five decorated homes on this year’s walk.

It was hosted by the Living Water Church of the Nazarene in its downtown church that was formerly the Morris Movie Theater on Jefferson Street.

But, the effort couldn’t have been achieved if it weren’t for volunteers from throughout the community, said tea organizer and church member Kelly Valentine.

“We have a smaller congregation,” Valentine said, “and there have been a lot of people pitching in to help us. ... I have friends from other churches who have stepped in and helped, and the Morris High School cheerleaders are helping, too.”

He said he only realized what a big deal the House Walk and Tea were when members of the Morris Downtown Development Partnership told him more than 1,000 tickets were usually sold for the event.

He knew his church could do it, though, with the help of its friends and neighbors.

“It’s been a multi-faith affair,” he said. “We’re having such a great time having people inside the building.”

Living nativity brings story of Jesus’ birth to life

This year, she played a shepherd in the “Living Nativity.”

“I enjoy being part of telling the story,” Born said. “It’s a great kick off to the Christmas season, and it gets you in the spirit.”

Pastor Jeri Baker said the church changed this year’s celebration from a live nativity to a living nativity because it wants to focus on the story and bring those who come into it.

“It’s a way to bless others in the holiday season,” Baker said. “The living nativity is a wonderful gift of the season.”

Actors portrayed all the important people from Jesus’ birth. As Joseph and Mary entered the manger, shepherds tending a flock of live animals heard from the angels to go forth to meet Jesus. The three wise men rode in on live horses from the parking lot, bearing gifts.

After onlookers watched the scene unfold, they were invited to come into the manger to be-

worked on a wreath. He said his daughter was participating in the play, helping with the animals.

“Working with the animals teaches her responsibility,” he said. “It also teaches them about Jesus and what Christmas is all about.”

The Rev. Roy Backus said the congregation believes the church is a gift to the community. The building is there for the community, so it’s natural to host an event for people of all faiths to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

“We celebrate who we are because of Jesus Christ,” Backus said. “We want to tell the story that can tie our lives together in a deeper way.”

Katie Thetard said her favorite home on the walk belonged to Anne and Dennie Long on Main Street in Morris.

“I love the style of the house, and that everything is original,” she said.

Lorene Hutchings, who was with Thetard, said the decorating done at the Main Street home stuck out to her.

“It’s just a beautiful home,” she said.

Anne Long greeted guests inside her home and said she was excited to participate in the House Walk.

“We moved in in November 2013 and when they called and asked, we thought this was the perfect incentive to get everything done,” she said. “We met our goal and we are able to show that old houses are still livable.”

The Longs found the home after they started bringing their boat down to Morris to put into the Illinois River. They first discovered downtown Morris, where they joined a wine club, and then took in the sites and fell in love with the old home and its wraparound porch.

The interior still shows off the original woodwork and grandfather clock, built into the staircase.

Born: Dec. 12, 1938; in Ransom, IL Died: Nov. 23, 2014; in Joliet, IL Leo John Phelan, age 75, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 23, 2014, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born in Ransom, IL on December 12, 1938, he was the son of Arthur H. and Margaret R. (Vint) Phelan. Leo lived in Channahon for many years and had resided in Joliet for the past four years. He attended Dwight High School and graduated in 1956.

He graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and later received a Master of Science in Agronomy also from the University of Illinois.

From 1961-1967, he served in the Army Reserve.

Leo worked in several agricultural related businesses and retired from Farm Services of Will-DuPage Counties. Leo was an avid baseball fan and always enjoyed attending family gatherings and celebrations.

Preceded in death by his parents; beloved niece, Mary (Phelan) Kruger; nephew, Mark J. Phelan; sister-in-law, Margaret Phelan; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Survived by three brothers, Paul of Ransom, IL, Luke (Judy) of Maumee, OH and Dr. Edward (Barbara) of Plainfield, IL; ten nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and great-nephews; and three greatgreat-nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Leo J. Phelan will be celebrated Thursday, December 4, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Jude, 2212 McDonough Street, Joliet, IL 60436. Military Rites will be accorded by the United States Army following Mass. As it was Leo’s request, Cremation Rites have been accorded. Private interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Ransom, IL at a later date.

Giving Tuesday a time to donate We’ve got a great idea as to what you can do with the money you saved from all those Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday deals you likely snatched up during the past few days.

Give.

Giving Tuesday – which is today – falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is a designated day of giving to charity. The United Nations Foundation is given credit as one of the originators of Giving Tuesday, which was first held in 2012 and was created as a global day of giving back.

In Illinois, Donors Forum is coordinating this initiative, and it has a bold goal: $12 million raised by Illinois nonprofits from 100,000 individual donors – in one day.

More than 600 nonprofits in the state have signed up with Donors Forum to take part in Giving Tuesday.

You can visit its website, https://donorsforum.org/ to find a charity you would like to donate to.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be on that list in order to donate. Maybe there is a local nonprofit that has provided a service that benefited you, and you’re now in a position to give back.

Or maybe you want to start a new tradition of giving to those in need each holiday season. Giving Tuesday can be the day you annually bestow that gift.

Nonprofits provide much-needed services in our communities. From programs for children to providing food and shelter to helping veterans – and everything in-between – nonprofits are there to help some of our most vulnerable neighbors.

Most nonprofits have been hit hard by the state’s financial woes: They usually wait months for money owed to them by Illinois, and often are lucky if it comes at all. And at the same time, the needs of our neighbors increase, putting even more strain on our nonprofits.

The holidays should not be just about getting, but about giving, as well. This is a gift you don’t even need to wrap and top with a bow. You don’t need to give a lot to make a difference.

It just needs to come from the heart.

Redskins, Indians alumni pad up to raise funds

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – In an age where it’s commonplace to weigh the consequences of football against its benefits, it can be hard to justify strapping on the chinstrap and putting your body at risk without cause. Yet, on Friday night on an iced over field at Minooka Community High School, a group of Morris and Minooka alumni threw caution to the wind.

It was the second annual alumni game between these two schools with proceeds going to Minooka’s Athletic Boosters, and after last year’s game ended in a tie at 6, Morris would emerge with a 26-12 victory Friday night. However, it was the cause that shined for a surprisingly raucous Minooka crowd.

“These are the same bleachers and this is the same field that I played on,” Class of 1996 Minooka graduate and football chairman Neil Craig said after Morris’ win. “When I was here, Minooka was a Class 4A school, and now, it’s an Class 8A school, so these facilities need updating pretty bad and that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

As the football chairman of the alumni game, Craig put countless hours into organizing the affair, which was a grind.

“When I started it and I saw all the paperwork that

Morris won, 26-12. was going to have to be done and all the hoops I was going to have to jump through, I almost stopped. Then I had two girls [Karianne Craig and Marsha Williams] step up, and they said, ‘We’ll do all that.’

So I said all right, and without them, there would have been no way I could have done it.

“I spend 40 hours a week just trying to set up the field and then get the plays and the pad stuff going, while they got all the school and legal stuff going. There’s just so much that goes into this.”

As far as safety goes, every participant is required to sign a waiver that relinquishes Minooka Community High School’s liability, as well as the fact that the rules are augment-

ed to slow down the pace of play. There are no kickoffs or punts, and timeouts are added while quarters are shortened.

While the field is shortened to 80 yards and hits below the waist and to the head are illegal, the game is still plenty physical. However, the risk still isn’t lost on the game’s

participants.

“Before the game, you can definitely feel it in your stomach. It’s like, ‘Am I really gonna come out here on a snow-covered field and bang heads all day?,’ “ Class of 2002 Morris graduate, former Chicago Cubs pitcher and recent father Billy Petrick said. “But

everybody seems to understand out there that we have a bit more on the line now, and the idea isn’t for us to come out here and just kill each other.”

Petrick and former Fighting Illini fullback-turned-St. Louis Rams/Green Bay Packers practice squad player Russ Weil were a couple of the more recognizable names on Morris and Minooka’s roster. Petrick, a former lineman for the Redskins, played wide receiver and caught the go-ahead 57yard touchdown for Morris.

Morris and Minooka running backs Joe Lazier and Nathan Carroll each ran for a pair of touchdowns for their respective teams.

Morris Community High School has not expressed interest in hosting the game, although Petrick hopes the success of the game will eventually change that.

“Hopefully next year, we can talk to whoever we need to talk to so that we can get out there. I think it’d be a great thing for the school and the community,” he said.

Coal City (1-3) led 8-4 after the first quarter, but Morris, which hosts Seneca tonight at 7, rallied in the second to take a 21-18 lead into halftime. The Coalers then cut the lead to 3130 entering the fourth quarter before Morris went on its run.

Bjelland scored a pair of baskets and Jake Walker added another for a 37-30 lead before Coal City called timeout with 4:44 left in the game. Coming out of the timeout, Patterson scored for Morris on a nice back-door cut before Jake Walker hit a floater in the lane. Patterson then drained a 3-pointer, and Sobol scored underneath before Cody Krug hit a 3-pointer for the Coalers’ first points of the quarter with 2:18 to play.

“We really buckled down on defense in the fourth quarter,” Patterson said. “They say that good defense leads to offense, and we were able to get some easy baskets off of our defense.”

COAL CITY – It might have taken a little longer than Morris boys basketball coach Joe Blumberg would have wanted, but once the Redskins ramped up their defense, they pulled away from Coal City on Saturday night in the finale of the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

Morris went on a 15-0 run to start the fourth quarter and came away with a 48-36 win that moved them to 3-1 in the tournament.

“I don’t know why we have had these sluggish starts,” Blumberg said. “It’s just as frustrating to us coaches as it is to the players and, I am sure, the fans. We haven’t taken the floor with a lot of urgency.

“Some of that is a lack of flow due to a lot of substitutions and different combinations of players on the floor. We are still trying to find that group that fits well together. Jake Jurasits did a nice job sacrificing his body and taking a couple of charges, and Jacob Brady made some good decisions when he was out there, too.

“I saw some improvement tonight, which is good, since we have three games and three practices this week.”

The Redskins finished second behind undefeated Immaculate Conception in the tourney, and saw Evan Bjelland and Austin Patterson make the all-tournament team for the second straight year. Bjelland

Morris sophomores win Coal City Turkey Tournament title STAFF REPORTS COAL CITY – The Morris sophomore boys basketball team opened its season by taking first in the Coal City Turkey Tournament with a 4-0 record.

Morris beat Coal City, 4830, in its final game of the tournament, as Josh Lain led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds. Keagan Sobol and Matt Shaw had seven points each, with Shaw collecting four rebounds.

The Redskins got off to a hot start against the Coalers and took a 23-10 halftime lead.

All but one Morris player scored in the contest.

Morris averaged 51 points a game in the tournament, with Shaw putting up a 15 points a game average.

In an earlier tournament game, Morris beat Immaculate Conception, 48-47. With both teams in the bonus at the end of the game and the game tied at 44, Morris gained possession with less than a minute left to play. Delaney Stutzki drove to the basket and was fouled. He hit both of his free throws to put the Redskins up, 46-44. Morris rebounded a missed IC shot and was positioned for the win. Nate Halcomb saw an opening from the perimeter and dropped the ball in the hoop in the paint, increasing the lead to 48-44. IC was able to muster up a 3-pointer with seconds remaining, but a successful Redskins inbound solidified

Sometimes you must hope to find a favorable lie of the cards. However, if you can allow for a bad split, do so; you never know when the wind will blow from the wrong direction.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen.

How should declarer continue?

South has seven top tricks: two spades, three hearts and two clubs. He could establish three diamond winners, but he does not have the time to work on that suit. He will lose two diamonds and three spades.

Instead, declarer must hope that he can take four club tricks. But how should he play that suit?

If the five missing cards are dividing 3-2, as they rate to do, everything works. But what if they are 4-1?

There is only one winning position: East must have a singleton eight or nine. So, South should take the first trick with his spade ace and lead the club 10. If West plays low, declarer runs the 10. If it loses, he needs a 3-2 split. Here, though, if West does not cover the 10, South will take the trick and cruise home.

If West does cover, declarer wins with dummy’s king and plays a low club back to his hand.

Hormone therapy can hike heart risk in older women Dear Doctor K: I’m 68 years old and have been on lowdose estrogen therapy since I had a hysterectomy (and started menopause) at age 50.

My doctor won’t prescribe it anymore because he says it increases my risk of heart problems. Is that true?

Dear Reader: The effect of hormone therapy on the heart is a controversial area.

Hormone therapy usually involves “combination therapy,” with both estrogens (the main female hormones) and progestins (other important female hormones). Estrogen helps reduce symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Progestin reduces the risk of cancer of the uterus.

In my opinion, combination therapy or estrogen therapy alone probably re-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff duces the risk of heart disease among women entering menopause, and for five to 10 years thereafter. But then, about 10 years after menopause, combination hormone therapy begins to increase the risk of heart disease. So your doctor has reason to be concerned.

How could it be that hormone therapy protects against heart disease in younger menopausal women, but increases the risk of heart disease in older menopausal women? Why should age matter? It has to do with the effect of female hormones on blood vessels.

The most common type of heart disease is atherosclerosis of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis causes cholesterol-filled “plaques” in the walls of the arteries.

As these plaques grow, they can block the flow of blood through the arteries.

When blood flow to a part of the heart muscle stops, the muscle dies. That’s what happens in a heart attack.

Some heart attacks are caused by plaques that slowly grow and finally become so large that they shut off the blood supply to a part of the heart. However, more heart attacks are caused by smaller plaques. These plaques are not large enough to block blood flow very much.

But each plaque has a cap

of fibers that holds in the plaque’s pool of cholesterol. In some plaques, called “vulnerable plaques,” inflammation inside the plaque eats away at the fibrous cap. Suddenly, the fibers rupture, cholesterol spills into the artery, a blood clot forms – and blood flow to a part of the heart stops.

Estrogen slows the development of plaques. By the time a woman reaches menopause, her own natural estrogen has helped protect her against developing plaques. The estrogen in hormone therapy continues to slow (but not stop) plaque development.

By 10 years after menopause, however, the average woman has vulnerable plaques that threaten to rupture.

Estrogen increases inflammation inside the plaques, and it causes blood to clot more easily. So estrogen now increases the risk of heart attacks.

Most studies that show an increased risk of heart disease in women of your age involved the use of combination hormone therapy. You’re on just estrogen, and a low dose at that.

Still, I think the safest assumption is that you are at a somewhat increased risk.

You and your doctor have to balance the risk against any benefits you feel you get from estrogen.
