Born: July 24, 1948; in Morris, IL Died: Dec. 15, 2014; in Naperville, IL Walter “Rocky” Cook passed away peacefully on December 15, 2014, at his home in Naperville, Illinois. He was born July 24, 1948, in Morris, Illinois, son of the late Robert and Virginia (Drake) Cook.

Rocky was educated in the Morris schools and was an employee of Narvick Brother Lumber Company in Morris for many years as a custodian. He was affiliated with Illinois Valley Industries. He enjoyed bowling at Echo Lanes.

Rocky later moved to Bolingbrook/ Naperville area in a group home where he lived with three housemates- Todd, John and Chuckie. He was affiliated with the Individual Advocacy Group, which consisted of a wonderful care giving and loving staff. Rocky continued to go bowling, to the movies, dining in all the area restaurants and shopping. He took many vacations to visit family and spent as much time as he could with nearby family.

He is survived by his brother, Edward of Chicago; and two sisters, Charlene (Gerald) Maki of Bradenton, Florida and Charlotte Perez of Tucson, Arizona. He has several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rocky is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 20, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 West Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Rocky’s Life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Steve Larson of First Baptist Church of Morris officiating. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Morris.

Preferred memorials may be made in “Rocky’s” name to the charity of your choice.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Arrangements have been entrusted with the U. C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 W. Washington Street Morris.

VIVIAN KATHERINE FINN Born: June 5, 1922; in Coal City, IL Died: Dec. 16, 2014; Dwight, IL Vivian Katherine Finn, of Dwight, Illinois, formerly of Coal City, passed away at 7:53 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Heritage Health, Dwight.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 18, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 N. Broadway, Coal City, Illinois. Funeral services are Friday, December 19, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 S. Kankakee St., Coal City, Illinois.

Burial will follow at Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.

Vivian was born June 5, 1922, in Coal City, Illinois, the daughter of Theresa (Burla) and Christopher Born. She met Bill Finn, the love of her life, at a free movie show in South Wilmington, Illinois, and the two were married at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City on August 1, 1942. They enjoyed 72 years of marriage until Bill was called home to heaven on November 14, 2014.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters and brothers-in-law Thelma and Larry Wickman, and Norma and Melvin Jackman; sister-inlaw and brother-in-law Mary and Joseph Bacigalupo; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Eugene and Myrt Finn; brother-in-law Norman Sayers; and brother-in-law Mervin Joneson.

Vivian graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1940. In addition to raising three children, Vivian worked as a bookkeeper over the years in the office at Granert’s Clothing Factory in Coal City, and Perona Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Coal City, which later became Jim Smith Chevrolet-Oldsmobile.She retired from there in 1983. Always involved with her children’s school and scouting activities,Vivian continued to be there to support her grandchildren in all of their endeavors. She was a woman of great faith, whose quiet prayer time and devotions were part of her daily life. Vivian was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of The Marthas and the Alter & Rosary Society at Assumption Church, and a volunteer with the Grundy Coun-

ty Health Department. She and Bill were charter members of the Coal City Area Club. Vivian enjoyed many wonderful vacations with her family, going on cruises with Bill, and accompanying him to his 101st Airborne Division Reunions.

Vivian enjoyed baking, especially at Christmas time when she would bake a large variety of Christmas cookies that she would generously share with family, friends, and neighbors. Vivian will most be remembered for always putting the needs of others ahead of her own, for being the “worrywart” over those she loved, and for making sure everyone was comfortable and taken care of. She will be greatly missed, but we rejoice that she and Bill are together again.

Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

After attending Joliet Junior College, she began her family and had children. When she ran or rollerbladed, she took the kids with her in their stroller.

“My transportation for a long time was rollerblades,” she said.

As the kids grew, she remained active with them.

Then came her injuries,

desk jobs and a slow decline in her fitness. Last October, she lost 15 pounds by eating Ideal Protein meals, which she described as a weight loss program with low carbohydrates and sugars.

She kept running into an acquaintance in town, Heather Hayes, who she noticed was getting in shape. Hayes recommended her coach, Staci Boyer, and Pierard hired Boyer as

her coach last March.

Pierard joined Boyer’s Team Motiv8 Elite. She worked out at Get Fit in Morris and Coal City for two-and-a-half to three hours every day, sometimes even going in twice a day. Little by little, she saw her muscles transform, and her bodybuilding body emerge.

“She worked hard, and she believed in herself, and I believed in her,” Boyer said.

“She never faltered. ... Jeanine is somebody who transformed her life, and she overcame so many things. She is the definition of a real inspiration. She knows how to balance fitness and life and really bring it all together.”

It wasn’t easy, Pierard said, especially since her biggest priority was her family. She would get up at 4:30 a.m. for her workouts, even when her hamstrings were hurting, which was most days.

The competition was Nov. 1 in Chicago, and she was ready.

It was an all-day event and was trying, she said, but she was up for it. Her coach led her and her teammates through all the last-minute preparations of

spray tanning, hair, make-up, jewelry and advice.

There were about 3,000 competitors at the show, with 15 women in her “C” class, which was for taller women. The judges looked at overall physique, she explained, including definition and muscle mass. They also looked at the way she posed, her hair, her shoes and even her tan.

“Your tan can make or break your muscle definition,” she said.

She took away the fifth place trophy – and the joy of meeting her goals and getting to know a great group of women.

Pierard described the experience as “amazing.” She continues to exercise, but not with quite the grueling schedule she had pre-competition.

She wants to work more on her shoulders, legs and gluts, and build more strength. She’s considering doing some work as a fitness model.

“I don’t know what my future holds,” she said, “but you can bet it consists of living a healthy and fit lifestyle, and I hope to inspire others to do the same.”

COAL CITY – It wasn’t too long ago that Jeanine Pierard of Coal City was fairly inactive.

She had a desk job and spent quite a bit of time recovering from shoulder and two hamstring surgeries. She had put on a few pounds, too, and was up to a size 16 when she was 31.

She lost a lot of the weight by “common sense nutrition,” then, in October 2013, she began a stern nutrition program.

Last March, at 36, she signed up with a well-known coach and motivational speaker, and began a hardcore workout regime.

The goal was a bodybuilding competition.

About eight months later, she was on a stage at the 2014 National Physique Committee Iron Man Bodybuilding Show in Chicago, wearing a size 2 bikini, weighing 128 pounds with 2 percent body fat, and taking home the fifth-place trophy in the Women’s Figure Class C Division.

“I wasn’t sure if I could do it,” Pierard said of the goal she set for herself last spring. “I was older, I had injuries, I had two kids ... ” In their first meeting, she asked her coach Staci Boyer a lot of questions. “ ‘Is this doable?’ ” she asked. “ ‘Don’t sugarcoat it for me.’ ... I followed her plan to a T. I wanted it that bad. I wanted to get on that stage at least one time.”

It wasn’t hard for her to get motivated. Pierard was athletic even as a kid, preferring running around outside to indoor activities.

“I was a tomboy,” she said.

“I loved anything to do with sports and athletics.”

She skateboarded, rode bikes, swam and played volleyball, basketball and softball.

She started going to the Coal City Fitness gym when she was 15. It became an everyday activity for her, and she loved it.

Morris candidates contend they properly submitted paperwork

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Two people who want to run for Morris public offices in the April 2015 election who have had their petitions challenged testified Wednesday that they properly submitted their paperwork.

Republican Doug Hayse, who is running for Second Ward alderman, and Republican Mary Callahan, who is running for city clerk, testified during a special meeting of the Municipal Officers Electoral Board of the City to hear objections against their petitions.

Kristan Smolenski, of Morris, filed an objection against Hayse and David Perry of Morris against Callahan, both for improper fastening of petition sheets.

Both petitioners are repre-

sented by attorney Michael Olewinski; Robert Geiger represented Hayse and Callahan.

The electoral board and hearing officer James Harvey of Joliet heard testimony from Beth Walker, deputy city clerk; Carol Adair, city clerk, and Hayse during the opening case against Hayse.

Walker testified she received the papers from Hayse toward the end of the day and typed a receipt for him.

She stated the papers were numbered but were not fastened. After being recalled later during the hearing, she said that the pages were not fastened together when they were handed to her, but she can’t recall when Hayse walked in if they were fastened together.

Hayse said he used a black clip binder to fasten his papers together, and noted he

researched how to file the petitions by talking to a past clerk and by reading an electoral website.

After the first case adjourned for the day, the case against Mary Callahan was opened.

Adair testified she was called by Walker and told Callahan was there to turn in her petition. She said Callahan carried the papers in her right hand and they were not fastened together.

Geiger questioned Adair why she chose to take the petition from the person who would be running against her.

“As city clerk, that is my

job,” Adair said.

Olewinski asked Adair if she gave Callahan a receipt for her petition, which is required by law.

Adair testified she did not give the receipt and other required paperwork at the time the petition was turned in, but noted she sent it by certified mail after leaving messages for Callahan stating she forgot to give them to her.

“She was out the door before she finished her sentence,” Adair said.

Callahan testified she submitted the paperwork with a blue paper clip that was vinyl coated because she feels they are the best to keep the papers secure.

She said Adair took the paper clip off the documents

when she made copies. She said Adair stapled the copies and handed back the paper clip with the copies, so she assumed Adair stapled the submission, as well.

Olewinski also alleges the petition was not numbered, as required by law.

“You did not number the pages did you?” Olewinski asked Callahan.

She responded, “No, apparently not.”

Hayse is running in the Feb. 24 primary election against Second Ward Republican incumbent Julian Houston. Callahan is running against incumbent Adair, also a Republican.

Both attorneys agreed to continue the hearings of both cases to 4 p.m. Thursday at Morris City Hall.

6 Committee introduces

change to mileage rules

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Mileage reimbursement for Grundy County Board members soon might be limited to only include distances between their home and the administration building.

Perry Rudman, assistant state’s attorney, presented an amendment to the county rules at Tuesday’s Legislative & Veterans Assistance Commission Committee.

“It’s a way to standardize mileage reimbursement. Otherwise there’s no way to verify what people are being paid for their mileage reimbursement,” Deb Warning, committee chairwoman, said after the meeting.

“We just want to make it clear that if there’s mileage reimbursement, it’s from your home to here. It’s just another way to keep everybody honest.”

Warning said the committee will decide on recommending the resolution to the full board next month.

Committee members also discussed whether there should even be a mileage reimbursement.

County Board Chairman David Welter said some board members are in favor of the reimbursements while others aren’t.

“Some board members and people believe if [a board member] is on a committee, they’re already getting paid for that and shouldn’t get mileage,” Welter said before the meeting. “Some people believe that’s not what we get compensated for.”

In addition to the reimbursement, committee members also get a per diem payment of $80 for attending the committee meetings, according to Warning.

David Nelson, vice chairman for the County Board, said the per diem has been in place for years and that he doesn’t have a passionate stance on either side.

“If it’s legal, then obviously we should continue to do it, but if it’s illegal, we need to stop doing it immediately,” Nelson said before the meeting.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland told the committee the statute legally provides for mileage reimbursements.

Nelson, who lives in Minooka and drives 13 miles to get to the Grundy County Administration Building, said the reimbursement is a nice incentive.

“It’s a nice offset to some of my personal costs, like gas and vehicle maintenance,” Nelson said before the meeting. “It’s a hard argument seeing how cheap gas is out here.”

to hold one at the beginning of its regular school board meeting Monday night.

The public was given the opportunity to present written or oral testimony, but none was submitted.

District 54 approved the 2014 tax levy to fund the 2015-16 school year, with board members Dave Obrochta, Bonnie Cap and Jerry White absent.

The district is requesting to levy about $7.1 million in funds, but expects to receive about $7 million. District 54 was extended about $6.8 million in levy year 2013 – which was for the current 2014-15 school year.

Shaw said the district requests more money than it expects to get to ensure it maximizes the amount of money it is eligible to receive.

In addition to the levy, District 54 approved the sale of working cash bonds not to exceed $1.99 million.

The district continues to operate on a deficit budget, just as it has since 1988. In 1989, it issued working cash bonds and has continued to do so.

MORRIS – Some property owners living in Morris Elementary School District 54 will pay slightly more in taxes to the district and others slightly less due to changes in total equalized assessed values in the area.

Tax rates are based on the EAV of all the property owned in a taxing district. When EAV decreases, tax rates will typically increase. This year, some areas in the district have seen an increase in their EAV and others have seen a decrease.

“Taxes are going to stay pretty much flat,” said Teri Shaw, District 54 superintendent. “Erienna Township EAV is up and Morris Township EAV is down. It has about a 1 percent impact. That is not a big impact.”

The estimated total EAV for the upcoming tax year is based on information received from the Grundy County Assessor and those figures are subject to change over the coming months. That could alter the tax rate.

The proposed tax rate for levy 2014 – which is for school year 2015-16 – is $3.31 for every $100 of property owned.

This is a slight decrease compared to the actual tax rate for school year 201415, which was about $3.35 per $100 of property owned, even though the district is levying for more money.

The requested tax rate is 3.5 percent higher. The district was not required to hold a public hearing unless it sought a 5 percent increase, but it opted

Minooka residents may not see tax hike

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Even with a 7 percent increase in the village’s levy over last year, Minooka residents may not see much of an increase, if at all, on the village’s portion of their next property tax bills.

The village will need an additional $141,142 to keep things running smoothly, but an increase in equalized assessed value for new property in Minooka increased by 6.4 percent, or $16.6 million, Minooka Trustee and Finance Committee Chairman Dennis Martin said.

“The expectation is, if this levy is adopted, people will pay for the village portion [about] the same as last year,” Martin said.

Both Will and Grundy counties have reduced their residential levies, Martin said; Will by 6 percent and Grundy between 7 and 8 percent.

The levy on 2014 property taxes was approved in a 5-0 vote at Tuesday’s Minooka Village Board meeting. Trustee Barry Thompson was absent.

The village will participate in a demand response program through ComEd and subcontractor Energy Curtailment Specialists.

As a partner in the program, the village will shut down certain services during emergency situations in order to divert energy to other places that need it, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

While the services are vital to the village, they can withstand being shut down anywhere from one hour to one day, Duffy said.

Bike path agreement ironed out A glitch in the contract between Will and Grundy counties and the village for the McEvilly Road bike path has been ironed out and the contract was again approved by the Village Board.

While the agreement between the parties was approved at the November Village Board meeting, the village held off on signing the paperwork, Duffy said.

Will County added a clause that requires Minooka to be responsible for moving the bike path if the county ever reconstructs their section of the road.

“We are going along with that added paragraph,” Duffy said. “We are the last taxing body.”

The three governmental entities will each chip in $100,000 toward the cost of the bike path, something the village has been working toward for many years.

In other business the village board announced the decorating contest winners. First place went to John and Stacy Taylor and Paul and Melody Bartnik, who decorated their duplex together at 1410 and 1408 Dahlgren Lane; second place went to Ray Novak, 111 Prairie Drive; and third place to Carol Spalo, 309 Chippewa Drive.

BRIEF Channahon Lions offers scholarships CHANNAHON – The Channahon Lions Club awards $1,000 in scholarships annually to a number of eligible high school seniors.

The motto of Lions Club is “We Serve;” therefore, it awards scholarships to students who choose career paths that help others, according to a news release. The seniors of the Channahon community are served by several high schools, including Minooka Community High School, Joliet Central High School, Joliet Catholic Academy, Providence, and other private high schools.

The club is encouraging all eligible seniors to apply.

Scholarship criteria: • Must be a resident of Channahon or Channahon Township.

• Must be planning to enroll in a vocational training program or institute of higher learning as a full-time student in a field related to humanitarian services.

Scholarship applications currently are available at Minooka high school, on the school’s website or on the Channahon Lions Club Facebook page. Scholarship applications are due by Feb. 24. Minooka high school students may return applications per the instructions.

Robert L. Metroz, 36, of Morris, was arrested Tuesday by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Metroz had been released pending further investigation, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said. Helland said he anticipates formal charges will be forthcoming.

Metroz returned to the sheriff’s department Wednesday afternoon to file an informational report with police about what he believed were threatening messages being

made on social media regarding the matter, Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

Sheriff’s police made the initial arrest Tuesday following consultation and approval from the state’s attorney’s office, Callahan said, noting it’s up to the state’s attorney to determine if formal charges are pursued.

Police were called Tuesday by the dog’s owners, who said they witnessed Metroz shoot

and kill their 1 1/2-year-old American Bulldog, according to a police report.

The owner said the dog ran from the house after she let it out, so she went inside to grab her coat and shoes. When she got outside, she told police she saw her neighbor shoot her dog in the head with a rifle, according to the report.

Rozak set another pretrial hearing for Jan. 21 so the defense can review those records.

Authorities said Espinal-Quiroz was traveling 15 mph over the speed limit on July 21 when his red Freightliner slammed into three vehicles backed up in the northbound lanes while traffic was stalled by construction work on the Des Plaines River bridge in Channahon Township.

Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11, of Urbana, Vicky L. Palacios, 54, of Coal City, Ulrike Blopleh, 48, of Channahon, and Timothy Osburn, 64, of Urbana, were killed in the chain-reaction collision.

Espinal-Quiroz allegedly told police at the scene he started work at 2:30 a.m. but had written in the logbook he had begun at 6:30 a.m.

Espinal-Quiroz , who authorities said has been blind in one eye for 30 years, has driven trucks since 1991 with a vision waiver from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. His license was renewed the day before the crash.

Palacios’ and Blopleh’s families have filed lawsuits against Espinal-Quiroz and the trucking company.

Nettle Creek School names students of the month MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – As a part of a comprehensive School Improvement Plan, Nettle Creek School recognizes two students each month as the Students of the Month.

One student is chosen at the kindergarten through fourth-grade level and one student is chosen at the fifthto eighth-grade level. Grundy Bank of Morris generously donated the tro-

phies that are awarded to students at the monthly meetings of the Board of Education, according to a news release from the school. Nettle Creek School is pleased to announce the six students who have been selected thus far this year.

Zachary Zabel and Makenna Wills were the students of the month for September. Zachary is a first-grade student and is the son of Brian and Tracy Zabel of Morris. Makenna, a seventh-grade

student and a new student to Nettle Creek this year, is the daughter of Thomas and Robyn Wills of Morris.

Keaton Cryder and Marissa Berkley were the students of the month for October. Keaton is a third-grade student and is the son of Ryan and Crystal Cryder of Morris. Marissa is in eighth grade and she is the daughter of Laura Berkley of Seneca and Daniel Berkley of Morris.

Olivia Smith and Eland Miller were the students of the month for Novem-

ber. Olivia is a second-grade student and is the daughter of Don and Laura Smith of Morris. Eland is in fifth grade and is the son of Chris and Deanna Miller of Morris.

Students of the month are selected based on a broad range of criteria including academic prowess, citizenship, and behavior, according to the release.

Nettle Creek is proud of each of these students who go above and beyond each and every day.

New Community Christian Church fills We Care’s pantry MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Just in time to help fill the Thanksgiving food requests, on Nov. 24, New Community Christian Church donated $750 to help We Care obtain 8,636 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves.

“Our church family loves to give back to our communities.

We feel blessed by God and want

to share our blessings with others. This is one way we are able to bless many families in need.”

Kevin Yandell, lead pastor, said in a news release. “We so appreciate the work of We Care, its employees and so many volunteers. Our efforts are multiplied when we come alongside such a strong organization.”

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 251 families from its food pantry. We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for

its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning, and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores, such as 5.8 ounce boxes of skillet dinners for 57 cents each, 24 ounce bottles of Italian dressing for 40 cents each, and 10 ounce boxes of cheddar

mashed potatoes for 6 cents each.

In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program. The EFP provided shelf-stable milk, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, beef stew, whole-grain spaghetti and

whole chickens.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance. We Care is a United Way partner agency and is funded primarily by private donations. It is located at 520 W. Illinois Ave., Morris.

For those wanting to take in the most local boys teams, the destination will be the Plano Christmas Classic. Morris, Coal City, Seneca and Newark are all in the 24-team field.

Morris is seeded sixth in the tourney and will not play until Dec. 26 at 3:30 p.m., when they take on the winner of Tuesday’s game featuring Seneca against 11th-seeded Princeton. Coal City plays the first game of the day Tuesday, taking on No. 12 seed St. Bede at 9 a.m. Newark, seeded 13th, plays Forreston immediately after that game, which is scheduled to tip off at 10:30.

Other teams involved at the Plano Tournament are Wilmington, Ottawa, Sandwich, Hinckley-Big Rock, Indian Creek, Kaneland, Lisle, Streator, Somonauk, Plano, LaSalle-Peru, Aurora Christian, Yorkville, Dixon, Central, Genoa and Mendota.

Minooka’s boys team starts play in the 32-team Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at Elmhurst York on Dec. 26 when the Indians play the host school at 8 p.m.

Rounding out the field at York are Waubonsie Valley, Wheaton North, Conant, DePaul Prep, Providence, Wheaton South, McHenry, St. Patrick, Rolling Meadows, St. Ignatius, Hinsdale South, Schaumburg, Lane Tech, Riverside-Brookfield, Timothy Christian, Elk Grove, Sandburg, Highland Park, Ridgewood, Metea Valley, Nazareth, Lake Forest, Stagg, Lyons, Oswego, Batavia, Naperville North, Glenbard East, Downers Grove South and Palatine.

Gardner-South Wilmington starts play in the 16-team Marseilles Holiday Tournament at 9 a.m. Dec. 26 against Woodland. The Panthers are the fifth seed.

GIRLS The Morris girls will take their 9-2 record into the Ottawa Lady Pirate Christmas Classic, starting Friday at 3 p.m. with a game against Lincoln-Way West, the team that ended the Redskins’ season in the Class 3A regionals last year. LaSalle-Peru also is in Morris’ pool at Ottawa, and the Redskins will play the Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon at 4:30.

Other teams in the tourney are Kaneland, Kankakee, Pontiac, Geneseo, Sandwich, Yorkville, Ottawa, Rockford

East and Streator.

The Gardner-South Wilmington girls already have played three games in the Iroquois West Holiday Tournament and have a 1-2 record. The Panthers beat Milford and lost to Iroquois West and Herscher.

They concluded tourney action Wednesday night against Beecher.

Coal City, which sports an 8-2 mark, does not play in the Lisle Holiday Tournament until Dec. 26, when they take on Timothy Christian at 8 p.m. in the South Gym. Newark begins play in the same tournament at the same time, taking on Westmont in the North Gym. Other teams involved are Antioch, Walther Christian, Latin, Lisle, St. Francis, Chicago Christian, Wheaton Academy, Hinckley-Big Rock, Hampshire, Illiana Christian, St. Edward and Reed-Custer.

Minooka will be a part of the Lincoln-Way East Medieval Classic, beginning with a game Monday against Andrew at 1 p.m. The Indians, who are 6-3, then play Plainfield South at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Lincoln-Way North at 2:30 p.m. Friday to finish pool play.

Seneca will take part in the St. Bede Lady Bruins Christmas Classic, which begins Saturday.

Morris’ Henry, Perry set for Christmas in Caribbean

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media correspondent MT. PLEASANT, Mich – When Morris Community High School alum Kevin Henry arrived at Central Michigan as a wide-eyed freshman in 2010, he probably never imagined his collegiate career would end like this.

Sure, every Division I football player has designs on playing in a bowl game to finish it out, but considering the Bahamas Bowl didn’t even exist at the time, it would have been difficult to envision a Christmas in Nassau.

Yet, as the Chippewas continue preparations for a spot in the Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl opposite Western Kentucky, two Morris natives’ athletic talents are taking them somewhere exotic and unexpected. Along with Henry, who will make his 30th start along the offensive line now in his career at Central Michigan, 2012 graduate Jeff Perry also will make the trek.

However, while Christmas Eve in the Bahamas is an experience unto itself, Henry, Perry and the Chippewas are focused on the task at hand.

“It hasn’t really been too difficult,” Henry said when asked about balancing the vacation aspects of a trip to the Bahamas

coming a solid program again.

We’re the only team in the conference that’s beaten NIU in the regular season over the course of the last few years.”

The foundation that Henry and some of the other upperclassmen have built hopefully will pay great dividends for younger Chippewas like Perry.

Perry redshirted in 2013 and has been a contributor on special teams throughout the course of the season. Eventually, he hopes to become as important of a piece to the development of this program as Henry has become over the course of the past five seasons.

As for Henry, Christmas Eve Photo provided by Central Michigan University in the Bahamas may mark the Kevin Henry (60), of Morris, and the Central Michigan football team end of his collegiate career, but

will play in the Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl at 11 a.m. Christmas Eve. with the seriousness of prepping for a bowl game. “When it’s time to work, it’s time to work. We’ll get a chance to have our fun, but, right now, our main focus in this game is to get the win.”

A win would get the Chippewas to 8-5 (their best record in the Dan Enos era) and would cap a season in which they beat a Big Ten team (Purdue) on the road and also defeated the MAC champion NIU Huskies decidedly in DeKalb, as well. It would be a fitting end for one of the

integral parts of the rebuilding process in Mount Pleasant.

“There’s really no way to describe what it means to me,” Henry said. “Obviously, after losing to your rivals [Western Michigan] to finish out the regular season, all you really ever want is one more game.

All three Redskin relays were victorious as the 200-meter medley team won in 2:35.28; the 200 freestyle in 2:00.11, and the 400 freestyle relay in 4:35.21.

Where does the Bears’ incompetent coaching stop and the players’ poor play start?

On the Bears’ last possession of the first quarter they were at the Saints’ 48-yard line facing second-and-12, and the Saints lined up the defensive end on the outside shoulder of Jordan Mills, put inside linebacker David Hawthorne off the line and head up on Kyle Long and the outside linebacker off the line and head up on Mills.

Both linebackers blitzed, and Long gave Hawthorne a free run off his inside shoulder.

Hawthorne dropped Jay Cutler for a 9-yard sack.

Long had to know Roberto Garza had the nose tackle on his shoulder.

Was Hawthorne Long’s assignment?

What was the call at the line?

Did Long believe he had a back or a tight end to pick up the inside blitzer he sent free and that he had to step out to pick up the outside blitzer because Mills would step out to block the end?

Long took responsibility in the locker room after the game, saying

The Bears totaled only 207 yards of offense before the final 1:47 of the game, when they mounted a 71-yard touchdown drive in garbage time, and a huge part of the problem

earlier was the receivers earned a D at best.

Alshon Jeffery is clearly a No. 2, converting only four of the nine passes he was targeted with and, according to Cutler, running several routes incorrectly; Marquess Wilson was invisible most of the night with three catches for 16 yards, one of which was his first NFL touchdown to make the score 24-8 early in the fourth quarter; and Martellus Bennett fought but was, for the most part, ineffective.

Two important notes: The holding call on Bennett that nullified a 14yard run by Forte that would have set the Bears up at the Saints’ 36 on their third possession and a holding call on Jared Allen that gave the Saints another play after a botched field goal attempt were phantom calls. Bennett and Allen were innocent.

Allen played the run well again but just isn’t much of a factor rushing the passer, and Jeremiah Ratliff was stout, as the Bears limited the Saints to 86 yards rushing on 26 attempts.

It is impossible to grade the line-

backers. Clearly Jon Bostic’s best position is the Will, Christian Jones is best suited for the Sam and Shea McClellin’s only hope is the Mike; and their coaches insisted on playing them all out of position.

Tim Jennings played well other than a few soft coverages in the second half, but the rest of the secondary was awful, allowing Drew Brees to throw for 375 yards. Kyle Fuller in particular continues to struggle mightily. Give the group a D-.

As I’m sure you’ve gathered by now, the coaches failed their players badly. Afterward, coach Marc Trestman said, “There’s nothing that they showed us that we haven’t seen or practiced against.”

Cutler stated in a separate interview, “They mixed up really well.

They showed us a few new things.”

How am I supposed to grade these guys when apparently the coach and the quarterback are playing different games?

Sneaky bank deal only the beginning As Washington was betraying regular Americans in favor of big banks, Elizabeth Warren took to the Senate floor last week to ask, “Who does Congress work for?” She probably should have included President Barack Obama in her question.

Warren, D-Mass., was talking about a bank-authored spending bill amendment that constituted one of the most generous giveaways to banks since the $700 billion bailout of 2008. The amendment, which according to the New York Times was written by Citigroup’s lobbyists, guarantees that banks can gamble with abandon and that when they inevitably lose, the taxpayers will pick up the tab.

Unrestrained derivatives trading was a major cause of the financial meltdown. That’s why the 2010 DoddFrank Wall Street reform legislation prohibited banks from using federally insured deposits on speculative products. Banks moaned that having to risk their own funds in the financial casino makes their products too expensive. But those products should be expensive because they carry extraordinary risks.

Unfortunately, the president is expected to agree to undo the Dodd-Frank provision as part of the compromise spending bill passed by the Senate last weekend. To understand the danger this presents to the economy, consider the continuing aftermath of the recession.

Last spring, the country finally finished recovering the nearly nine million jobs lost in the recession, but too many of the new jobs pay lower wages than the positions that disappeared. Adjusted for inflation, median household net worth, which peaked at $115,100 in 2007, slid rapidly after the recession to just $63,800 in 2013 – the lowest figure since 1969, according to economist Edward Wolff. Families are still suffering from stagnant wages and depressed home values, resulting in a recovery that has been slow at best.

The nonprofit financial watchdog Better Markets reports that the “cost of the financial crash in 2008 and its ongoing damage to American families is going to be more than $12.8 trillion.” But the banks, whose recklessness caused the problem, were bailed out as millions of Americans lost jobs and homes.

What makes this sneaky bank deal even worse is that analysts say it’s only the beginning. Further unraveling of the relatively piddling consumer protections in place will make the financial industry more likely to explode again, leaving another mess for taxpayers to clean up.

Under the circumstances, it was reasonable for Warren to ask whether Congress works for “the millionaires, the billionaires, the giant companies with their armies of lobbyists and lawyers? Or does it work for all of us?” The answer is clear and troubling.

The radical nature of love “Verdict is in: Pope Francis is a global rockstar,” one Twitter post declared. A recent Pew research report recently found that the pontiff had a positive image in much of the world. In his native Argentina, he enjoys a 91 percent favorability rating.

This comes a year after his image has graced some very unexpected magazine covers – Rolling Stone and The Advocate come to mind. But despite all that coverage from the lay press, many people still don’t know what to make of Pope Francis. During a recent synod meeting in Rome that centered on the family, people were alternatively excited, disappointed or outraged at the very idea that he could upend Catholic teaching on life and marriage; something he couldn’t do even if he wanted to, as it happens.

And so the question remains: Who is this man who became pope almost two years ago? In his new book, “The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope,” my friend and colleague Austen Ivereigh sets out to paint a more complete picture of the first pope from the Americas.

What is the “radicalism” of this pope? Well, the radicalism of the Gospel. And what does that look like? How does it become the life of

“Francis’ radicalism is born of his extraordinary identification with Jesus after a lifetime of total immersion in the Gospel and mystical prayer,” is how Ivereigh describes it. “That identification leads him to want to simplify and focus, to increase opportunities for clearing the way for God to act,” he continues. “It results in a dynamic, disconcerting leadership, which, while delighting most Catholics and attracting people beyond the boundaries of faith, has dismayed and disconcerted a number of ‘parties’ within the Church.”

Reflecting on the pope’s designation as “Person of the Year” from Time magazine last year, among other things, Ivereigh writes: “Without altering a single core Church doctrine – which a pope is not at liberty to do – Francis had achieved what had seemed impossible only a year earlier: to speak to the heart of contemporary Western culture. Catholics no longer had to hunker down defensively; as one journalist put it, ‘the overall effect has been to

restore the Church to an admirable and loveable presence on the world stage.’”

But that lovability, if it is to be seen and reflected in the lives of everyday Catholics around the world, must be born of that same identification and immersion that has marked the life of Pope Francis.

This is what, if you listen into Pope Francis, he is saying and modeling.

Don’t look to Pope Francis as a celebrity or politician, but a spiritual guide. He is a man who, like the founder of the Jesuits, St. Ignatius Loyola, pays “constant attention to spiritual discernment.”

The radical love of the Gospel takes us out of ourselves. It comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable. It helps people see Jesus because he has transformed our lives, and continues to do so.

That’s not a political side or program and it’s not fashionable, but it is a Christmas prayer.

In bridge, whether as declarer or a defender, the bidding lends you information to allow you to place key missing cards and play more accurately.

In today’s deal, how should South declare in four hearts? West leads the diamond two. East wins with his king and tries to cash the ace, but South ruffs.

North’s two-diamond cue-bid showed three-card or better heart support and at least game-invitational values. (In contrast, a jump raise to three hearts would have been pre-emptive, indicating four hearts and a weak hand.) Declarer started with nine top tricks: one spade, six hearts and two clubs. If the opponents had retained a respectful silence during the auction, South might well have drawn trumps and hoped that West had either the club queen or spade king. Now, though, it was likely that both of those cards rested in East’s hand -- although West might have held the club queen.

South played a heart to dummy’s jack, cashed the club ace, ruffed a diamond in his hand and cashed the heart ace, happy to see the nice break.

Then declarer played a club to dummy’s king. When the queen did not drop, South ruffed dummy’s last diamond and exited with a club. East took the trick, but was endplayed. A spade lead would have been away from the king, and when he tried a club, South discarded a spade from his hand and ruffed on the board.

If West had won trick nine with the club queen and shifted to a low spade, South would have let East win the trick with his 10 or jack.

Open adoption could help grandmother stay in touch Dear Abby: I am writing this in response to “Un-Grandparent in Ohio” (Aug. 25), whose pregnant teenage daughter has decided to place her baby for adoption.

My daughter and son-inlaw adopted their newborn daughter in an open adoption.

Each summer the adoption agency sponsors a picnic that is attended by birth and adoptive parents, grandparents and other family members -- and, of course, the adopted child. During the rest of the year, our daughter sends the birth mother photos and letters, going through the same agency.

I can only imagine the sadness Un-Grandparent is feeling. I hope her daugh-

ter has chosen an adoption agency like this one so she will be able to share in her grandchild’s life. – Grateful

similar to hers, it is the grandmother who adopts the baby.

This is often the best solution for everyone – especially the baby.

Most states favor adoptions by family members. It could be a wonderful ending/beginning for all concerned if that could happen in this case. –

West Coast Dear Abby: I was neither willing nor emotionally able to raise my 13-year-old daughter’s child. There was an open adoption, with a family that had five children of their own, but neither my daughter nor I took the opportunity to get

to know this child or his new family.

My parents (the baby’s great-grandparents) made the effort to keep in touch and were welcomed with open arms. My parents brought ALL the children Christmas gifts, and my mother wrote to them often, visiting when they had a chance.

So, if this is an open adoption, there is still the possibility for you to have as much contact as everyone is comfortable with. There is no such thing as too much love! –
