identify attempted scammer

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Police Department is trying to identify a man involved in two recently reported incidents of attempted fraud at Casey’s General Store, 743 Bedford Road.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said the incidents, which occurred Nov. 28 and Dec. 1, are both believed to be attempts at fraudulent transactions. The man was unable to buy any items, Dite said.

“At this point, we’re just trying to identify the individual,” Dite said.

The department has heard of similar incidents at nearby agencies recently, he said. Anyone who can identify the man pictured is asked to call Detective Paul Burke at 815-942-1158.

Rubbish fire at Walgreens put out; no structural damage reported News to your phone

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District responded Tuesday morning to a fire at the Walgreens at 100 Bedford Road in the compactor used for cardboard boxes.

“The first arriving fire company was advised by Morris Police of a rubbish fire at the rear of the facility,” a news release from Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes stated. “The fire was immediately extinguished with no damage to the structure.”

Steffes said the cause of the fire was unclear.

Steffes said there was light smoke inside the building, which required fire crews to ventilate it, and the Grundy County Health Department was notified to make an inspection to ensure the safety of all the products inside the building.

“Many times we always report the damage amount done to the structure and its contents by the fire, this is a case where we can report we had a property value saved well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars,” the release stated.

Steffes said the early detection system is designed to alert at an early stage when it first senses the sign of smoke.

• Jamal J. Abbasi, 28, of Worth, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Monday on a failure to appear warrant for two counts of theft. He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Eric E. Tamblingson, 29, of Edwardsville, was arrested

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on charges of possession of drug equipment and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was given a Dec. 28 court date.

• Gregory M. Welsh, 24, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug equipment. He was wanted on a Illinois Department of Corrections warrant for a charge of aggravated battery of a police officer and a Livingston County failure to appear warrant for a charge of delivery of marijuana.

Students sell handmade Christmas cards, cookies to community

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Realizing Educational and Career Hopes program based at Minooka Community High School is for high school students with special needs, as well as for those with special needs transitioning out of high school, to learn life and job skills.

Students use the job and life skills they learn to create businesses.

In the REACH Greetings portion of the program, students create cards for all occasions that are sold to the public. This year, the LyondellBasell Morris plant was the biggest purchaser of Christmas cards, with an order for 330 cards that will be sent to employees.

“Our site manager wanted to keep business in Grundy County as we looked to order Christmas cards, so I made calls and found out that the REACH program offered greeting cards by local students,” said Stacey Wren, administrative assistant at LyondellBasell. “I had so many questions about the program and the quality of the cards is amazing. They are all handmade.”

Josh Lunde, a transition student at REACH, drew an angel and colored it to be used on the greeting cards.

“I drew the angel for the holidays,” he said.

Lunde explained he much prefers drawing dinosaurs from “Jurassic Park,” but he also liked drawing the angel.

He said he always likes to draw, and he hopes to become famous as an artist.

The REACH students spend part of their day behind a desk, but a big portion of their time in the program is learning life skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting and how to be part of their community.

Their job is much like any other job.

They are given a schedule of work time for the week and are expected to leave class when it is their assigned time to work and then to return to class when work is over, without prompts from the teacher.

While working at REACH Greetings, students design, cut out and create the greet-

ing cards before assembling them by hand, one at a time.

“I’m an assembly person. I put stickers on and put snowmen on the card,” Kirkman said. “The cards are hard to make. Your hands get tired.”

Despite his tired hands, Kirkman said he likes to see the words written on the various greeting cards.

Casanova said making the cards is a fun job and she likes helping Patricia Hendrix, the job coach in charge of REACH Greetings.

“ I l i k e d o i n g t h e m achines,” she said.

Hendrix said the machines are used to print, cut and emboss the various pieces of the projects.

In addition to the greeting cards, REACH students also make and sell cookies.

For the third year, REACH students made cookies for the Grundy County Housing Authority to be given as gifts to its residents.

This year the Housing Authority ordered 150 dozen

cookies.

“We do it because REACH is a terrifically underfunded program. It provides vital life skills for students,” GCHA CEO Brent Newman said.

“Those skills will ultimately save taxpayers money by helping the students to live independent lives.”

Newman said residents at Saratoga Tower, Gardner Commons and Mazon Park Place will receive the cookies, which will be handed out by his staff.

School board extends teacher pension spikes

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – There were no open parking spaces in the lot and few empty seats in the board room as the Channahon District 17 school board convened Monday for its monthly meeting.

The crowd was mostly teachers who came to support the extension of district policy that increases earnings for some retiring certified educators by 6 percent a year over their earnings when they give notice to retire.

The teachers did not leave disappointed, as the board voted to extend the policy another four years.

The early retirement incentive policy was set to sunset Jan. 1, and the school board wanted to examine the policy and discuss its effectiveness before making the decision to extend it or allow it to sunset.

The policy affects certified

employees who have taught full-time for at least 15 years at the district and will be at least 60 years of age when retired, or 55 years of age with 35 years of Teachers Retirement System service.

When such teachers submit an irrevocable letter of resignation with intent to retire, the policy states they will receive “increases in compensation sufficient to increase his or her TRS earnings” at the rate of 6 percent a year for the final years of their service.

The increases are called “pension enhancements” or “pension spiking.”

An employee who gives notice four years before retirement receives salary increases of 6 percent a year for those last four years.

The school board considered keeping the 6 percent or allowing it to sunset and then possibly reducing it to 5 percent.

The policy is seen as incentive for longtime employees earning higher salaries to retire in a timely manner. New teachers are often hired as replacements, with lower salaries, thus saving the district money.

There has been a backlash in pension spiking in recent years in Illinois, however, with the state’s financial crisis and especially the underfund-

ed pension crisis.

Local school districts can save money with the pension enhancements, but after a teacher in the program retires, the burden of the enhanced salary shifts to the state’s pension system for the rest of the retiree’s life.

School board member Pat Clower addressed the issue.

“Our teachers make decent salaries – considerably above state average. ... We need to stand up as a country and say ‘enough’ to further enhancements,” Clower said.

Board President Joe Pope said his concern was the district.

“I feel the 1 percent [difference] is a thank you for giving us their service,” member Joan Ferguson said.

In the end, the extension passed, with board members Clower and Derek Breen voting to allow the extension to sunset and members Pope, Ferguson, Julie Bankes, Mistey Kosek and Dee Foreman voting to continue the 6 percent increases.

“I’m very pleased with the five people that voted yes,” Channahon School District Local 604 President Bill Stonich said after the meeting. “We deserve it for the time we put in. ... I feel the 6 percent is a show of appreciation.”

Stonich said his personal research showed that most other area teachers have the clause in their contracts.

“It’s important to look at it from the side of the savings for the district and the taxpayers,” Pope said after the meeting.

Johnson named as Morris’ next athletic director on Monday Will take over position July 1

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School Assistant Principal Jeff Johnson has prepared during the past two years to become the school’s next athletic director.

Monday night it became official.

The District 101 School Board voted, 6-0, to name Johnson as Morris’ athletic director beginning July 1.

Board member Lynn Vermillion was absent.

Johnson, a lifelong Morris resident and MCHS alum – as well as a former athlete and a coach – will take over for the retiring George Dergo.

“I’m very happy to have this opportunity,” Johnson said. “I’m a product of Morris High School, and I know the importance of a quality athletic program and the lifelong impact it can have on people – like it did for me.”

Johnson said he became interested in the position a couple of years ago as he thought about the next step in his career.

“With Mr. Dergo retiring, as well as [Principal Kelly] H u s s e y a n d [ S u p e r i n t e ndent] Dr. [Pat] Halloran on their retirement contracts, I started to look at my professional life,” Johnson said.

“I’ve always had a passion for MCHS athletics. It’s a natural fit and the timing is right. I’m very fortunate.”

Johnson has been learning portions of the job from Dergo during the past two years and is handling some leadership duties.

The school wanted to make it a smooth transition.

Johnson said he already has great relationships with coaches for all teams.

Tuesday evening, the Dettmann kids and other third- to fifth-grade students were at the Morris Area Public Library building gingerbread houses out of small milk cartons and any sweet treats they could find.

Participants used frosting as glue to mold the gingerbread pieces around the cartons.

After, kids were free to add siding and roof designs out of candy corn in traditional colors, Christmas colors or fruity colors, as well as with licorice, peppermints, M&M’s and marshmallows.

The event was part of the library’s plan to increase programs for children in the third- to fifth-grade age range.

Debbie Doyle, who works in intermediate programs at the library, said the plan is to start off with a couple of events a month. She said she

While Alecia, 8, went the traditional route and drew praise from her neighbor for her design, her brother Nathan, 9, used his never-ending

imagination to plan out an entire scenario.

People living in “The Marine House,” as he named it, were in dire need of help. A flood surrounded the house and forced people to climb onto the roof as a helicopter tried to save them. One person didn’t make it, and fell to their ending.

“He’s like that all the time,” said Susan Dettmann, Alecia’s and Nathan’s moth-

er. “I told him he needs to be in the drama club or write a book.”

Tuesday’s event also was a bonding experience for the group of children, who were all strangers except for two sets of siblings.

They exchanged stories about movies and books their parents checked out for them, as well as about Minecraft and their favorite candies.

Susan Dettmann said she’s

definitely bringing the kids to more of the evening events.

They wanted to come to the first one but couldn’t make it.

“I’m hoping to get on an email list so I know when they’re coming up,” she said.

On Jan. 5, kids are invited to make sugar cube igloos.

On Jan. 19, they’ll experience snowflake science.

Registration opens at the library the week before each event, Doyle said.

Morris District 54 approves 2015 tax levy District is levying for $7.555 million

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Elementary School District 54 board voted unanimously at its regular board meeting Monday night to approve the 2015 levy.

The proposed tax rate for levy year 2015 – which is for school year 2016-17 – is $3.55 for every $100 of property owned.

The estimated total equalized assessed value for the upcoming tax year is based on information from the Grundy County assessor and those figures are subject to change over the coming months, which could alter the tax rate.

“The district has levied for the maximum in some of their funds, which are capped, but it is only asking for what is needed in the IMRF, Social Security and Tort and Immunity funds,” interim Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.

This is an increase compared with the tax rate for academic year 2015-16, which

was $3.46 for each $100 of property owned.

The requested tax rate is 8 percent higher, according to the documents given to Gegenheimer as he started as interim superintendent Tuesday.

The district is required to hold a public hearing because it sought more than a 5 percent increase.

It held one at the beginning of its meeting Monday.

The public was given the opportunity to present written or oral testimony, but none was submitted.

The district is requesting just as it has since 1988. cash bonds and has continto levy about $7.555 million In 1989, it issued working ued to do so. in funds, but expects to receive about $7.459 million.

District 54 was extended about $6.997 million in levy year 2014.

Gegenheimer said the district requests more money than it expects to get to ensure it maximizes the amount of money it is eligible to receive.

In addition to the levy, District 54 approved the sale of working cash bonds not to exceed $1.975 million, slightly lower than the $1.99 million approved last year.

By CHARLIE GIBBS Morris Rotary As a local member of the Morris Rotary Club, I’m often asked what is Rotary all about.

I could explain how it’s an international organization with more than 1.2 million members, or how individual clubs make up a district, or how Rotary was founded by a local Chicago businessman in the early 1900s – but that doesn’t answer the question asked and what do people like me do in Rotary here in Morris.

First, Morris Rotary or, for that matter, any local Rotary club, is a group of local folks who meet weekly to share ideas, plan local events, and participate in local projects in order to raise funds for local charities.

In the past we have held charity banquets, bicycle runs, motorcycle raffles and a host of other events to benefit local charity groups.

Annually we raise funds on a select cruise night by selling 50/50 raffle tickets.

Additionally, on an annual basis, we travel to all the local grade schools and provide free dictionaries to third-grade students. And that’s just part of what we do.

The Morris Rotary Club is somewhat unique in that meetings are held in the evening after work, whereas other Rotary clubs have

either luncheon or breakfast meetings.

With more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide, the local options for meeting formats becomes endless.

Morris Rotary, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is an evening meeting club in order to make the meeting time more convenient for those not working in town or close by.

The club is made up of local businesspeople including bankers, teachers, retailers, service employees, insurance people, engineers, farmers, Realtors and restaurateurs, just to name a few.

The format of meetings is pretty much the same worldwide in that each weekly meeting format consists of a brief business meeting to cover current relevant topics, such as future events,

membership plans and finances.

Next the club will invite our guest speaker to address the membership on his or her organization or business. Local politicians such the mayor, fire chief, police chief or even local judges, are examples of guest speakers. Business owners also serve as guest speakers.

This is a relaxed environment for the speaker, allowing for great understanding of their positions, problems, and successes through Q&A from the membership.

Each meeting’s agenda also allows for interaction among the members and the guests while eating an informal dinner.

Additionally, one meeting a month is set aside for project work.

Although this can vary, in most cases we meet at

White Oak Elementary School to pack weekend backpacks for those students who have been identified as needing food items for the weekend.

With the help of volunteer Interact students from the high school, as well as spouses and other volunteers, we are able to pack close to 1,000 of these bags to be distributed each Friday at the local elementary schools.

As you can see, Morris Rotary is an organization of just normal people hoping to make a difference for the community. Rotary is not only relevant but fun.

Ralph Henry Brainard Sr., 62, of Chapin, SC passed away on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

Ralph H. Brainard was born Nov. 29, 1953, in Joliet, Illinois, the son of Warren C. and Frances (Neve) Brainard.

He was joined in marriage to Shannon Colleen Lockhart on June 7, 1997.

Ralph was currently a mechanical

work planner for Chicago Bridge & Iron for the new Nuclear Builds of Units 2 & 3 for V.C. Summer (SCE&G).

He previously worked for Caterpillar as a machinist in Joliet, Illinois; a Mechanic, then Scheduler, and later a Mechanical Work Planner at Braidwood Nuclear Station in Braceville, Illinois; some Truck Driving for Swift Trucking and Prime, Inc. Surviving are his wife,Shannon,his father,Warren C. Brainard; his brother, Calvin “Cal” (Mary) Brainard, Pontiac, Illinois; his sisters, LaDonna

Wharrie, Coal City, Illinois; Patricia Brainard (Jennifer Dickey), Greeley, Co; Lorraine (Robert) Brainard, Coal City, Illinois; three sons, Warren J. Brainard, Gardner, Illinois; Ralph H. (Misty) Brainard Jr., Gardner, Illinois; Jonathan H. Brainard, Chapin, South Carolina; two daughters, Sandra (D.J.) Chapman, Jasper, Alabama; Alexandria G. Former North Stars, U of Minnesota coach Sonmor dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS MINNEAPOLIS – Former Minnesota North Stars and University of Minnesota coach Glen Sonmor, who led the NHL team to the 1981 Stanley Cup Final, died Monday at age 86.

Sonmor died at a nursing home in Canada after battling Alzheimer’s disease, said former North Stars general manager Lou Nanne, who said he learned of his death from Sonmor’s sister, Jean.

“He was a tremendous guy. He was very charismatic, very energetic. He loved the sport of hockey as much as anybody,” Nanne told The Associated Press.

A native of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Sonmor coached the Minnesota Gophers from 1966-71, compiling a record of 77-80-6.

He was named WCHA Coach of the Year after Minnesota won the regular-season title in 1970.

RELISH MAGAZINE Baking with olive oil is a way to up the healthfulness of any cake, cookie or quick bread.

Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats (the good fats) and antioxidants.

Its typically fruity flavor gives a nice note of complexity to baked goods.

Extra virgin olive oil will deliver the most antioxidants, but for baking, opt for a standard store brand with a mild fruity, not peppery, taste, and save the expensive artisanal oils for drizzling of top of salads or bread.

Substitute olive oil for butter at a ratio of 3 to 4; that is, use three tablespoons of olive oil for every four tablespoons of butter called for.

Be aware, however, that subbing olive oil won’t work in recipes that call for the butter and sugar to be beaten together until creamy.

OLIVE OIL CAKE WITH POACHED FIGS Serves 9

Cake ingredients: 11⁄2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1 cup sugar 3 eggs 1⁄2 cup orange juice Finely grated peel of 1 orange 3⁄4 cup olive oil Fig ingredients: 1⁄2 cup chopped dried figs (about 12 figs) 1⁄4 cup orange liqueur OR 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate 1⁄4 cup water 1 tablespoon sugar 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and oil a 9-inch round cake pan.

2. To prepare cake, whisk togeth-

er flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Combine sugar and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in orange juice and peel. Reduce speed to low, and add olive oil in a slow stream.

3. Add flour mixture and stir just until combined. Pour into prepared pan. Bake about 35 minutes, until golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

4. To prepare figs, combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Simmer until the liquid is syrupy, 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm over cake.

Imagine being Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, working out of the Jobs family garage, making a machine that launched Apple Computer.

There’s a product that is being made in Seneca that may not take the world by storm like the iPod, but could gain, quite literally, a foothold in the world of sports.

Seneca High School teacher Mike Applebee has come up with a product, which he calls Grabity, and is manufactured by PI Extreme Inc., a company managed by his son, Alex. Grabity is an onthe-court traction system that takes the place of the adhesive mats used currently for basketball and volleyball games.

It is currently used for rubber products, mainly the soles of shoes.

It is sold as a kit, which comes with a mat, a spray bottle with a solution and a bag in which to carry it. When the mat is sprayed with the solution, it cleans the debris off the bottom of a shoe and also channels any other debris the shoe may pick up into the channels of the tread, making the part that contacts the floor surface remain clean and thus provide better traction than when they leave the factory.

“I coached a long time,” Applebee said. “What I took out of coaching was that I was always looking for a way to make the kids better. Any little edge would help. I was always wondering how to improve shoe traction. The stuff they had out there at the time was just junk. Those adhesive mats clean off the shoe for that moment, but they leave a layer of adhesive that picks up more dust in about seven steps or so. By the time you

are at half-court, the shoes are slick again.”

After spending a year in the research and development phase and three years of beta-testing, Applebee debuted his product at this summer’s Morris Shootout, where players and coaches alike raved about its performance.

The word has spread, and Applebee currently has 57 schools using his product,ranging from grade schools to universities, including colleges in the Horizon League and Southeastern Conference.

Around the area, Morris, Seneca and Coal City use the product, and Newark and Gardner-South Wilmington will each get a look at it at the Plano and Marseilles Christmas tournaments, respectively.

“There are zero glues in our product,” he said about Grabity, which is proprietary blend of organic ingredients that contains some essential oils. “Besides basketball, we have had success with volleyball and wrestling, as well as golf grips. It works very well in the rain.”

Applebee said he also tried it out in a vocational class at Seneca, where he currently teaches art and photography after spending years as a math and electronics teacher.

He also has a degree in industrial engineering from Eastern Illinois University, which came in handy while developing this product.

The product is currently designed for use only with rubber surfaces.

“Our main focus when we started out was court sports, basketball and volleyball,” he said. “But we have found that it works very well with golf grips, baseball bat grips, football receiver gloves. It not only works on tool grips, but I have been told that it is

While the initial cost of Grabity is slightly more than the traditional Slipp-Nott adhesive sheets, Grabity lasts longer.

Slipp-Nott costs $158.50 for 60 sheets, and a team will generally use two to four sheets a game. After buying a replacement set of sheets,

it makes the price $175 to $350 a season.

Grabity costs $189 up front for the mat and solution, but the solution, if applied properly, will last up to 115 games, or roughly three seasons, bring the cost down to about $60 a season.

“When we tested it out at the Morris Shootout, we got extremely positive reviews,

and that’s a gym that is not easy to get traction in. We have some schools in Ohio and Missouri that are using it, so we are hoping the word gets around.”

Coming up, Applebee will have his product on hand at both the Plano Christmas Tournament and Marseilles Holiday Classic and is trying to get a shot at the

Pontiac Tournament, where some suburban and Chicago Public League teams will be playing.

White shut down for remainder of season; top pick to stay on PUP list

The Bears made it official on Tuesday by keeping the No. 7 pick on the physically unable to perform list for the rest of the 2015 season instead of activating White to the 53-man roster.

White had surgery to repair a stress fracture in August. He

practiced for the first time three weeks ago and ramped it up to the point where he was working in full pads and in team drills last week. John Fox said that the injury is “healed,” it was only a question of whether White could get back to health.

In talks with the media, White said that he hoped to play this season. The Bears certainly needed help at pass catcher, as Marquess Wilson and Martellus Bennett were both put on

injured reserve last week and Eddie Royal just returned from a five-game absence.

White won’t be allowed to full-on practice with the team, but he can still do work with trainers off to the side the remainder of the season. Fox was asked Monday about the progress he’s seen from White.

“Being in the building with him for some time now, watching him go about his business, even though it’s not actually on

the football field the whole time, we’ve been very impressed with him, the kind of guy he is,” Fox said.

Hood waived: The Bears waived defensive tackle Ziggy Hood and elevated undrafted rookie linebacker John Timu from the practice squad. Hood was signed after Jeremiah Ratliff’s release, but played in only 37 of a possible 469 snaps. Timu had a sack and an interception in the preseason and has ap-

peared in four games playing special teams for the Bears this season.

Practice squad move: The Bears signed defensive lineman Toby Johnson and wide receiver/tight end Marcus Lucas to the practice squad.

Johnson, a 6-3, 312-pound undrafted rookie, has spent time with the Titans and Jaguars.

Lucas, listed at 6-4, 235 pounds, spent the 2014 season on the Panthers’ practice squad.

That means no practice. A day for the players to mend the body and the mind.

A good day for Tony Snell to lose some more quarters.

And why not? Coming off his most impactful game of the season, the third-year forward earned a date with Ms. PacMan. Scoring a season-high 16 points, including 13 in the third-quarter turnaround, Snell resembled the 20th overall pick from the 2013 NBA Draft.

Not always a look he’s been able to pull off.

So what Tuesday meant for Snell was a trip to the Advocate Center for a few hours, and then maybe a trip to the arcade.

“It’s definitely my outlet,” Snell said of his passion for gaming. “I’m trying to find a balance in myself. My rookie year was all basketball, and I thought it was helping me out, but it really wasn’t. I started overthinking things, I wasn’t playing like I should have, just thinking too much instead of letting the game come to me.

So just doing the outside stuff, not dwelling on basketball outside the court has helped me a lot.”

What’s unique about Snell’s hobby isn’t just the fact that he likes killing a couple of hours gaming, but the old school approach he has to it.

Sure, he’s done all the NBA2K’s and Call of Duty’s on the next gen in-house gaming consoles, but Snell admittedly still loves the arcade.

Whether he’s using quarters or simply credits on a card, the soft-spoken Snell likes to venture into an arcade area and go retro.

“I did the NBA2K thing,” Snell said. “At first, it was like, wow, this is crazy to actually be in a game, but that’s too much basketball for me. To be honest I still like the arcade these days, old school games.

Pac-man, Super Mario, the classics.”

Whatever works.

Some years ago, Mike Lawrence, who has three gold and three silver world team championship medals, wrote several excellent books. Most were about bidding, and in recent years he has updated and republished them. The latest two are “Tips on Bidding” and “Tips on Competitive Bidding” (Master Point Press).

In each, you get sound advice, and also information about rarely covered topics. For example, the chapter entitled “Overcalling in a Four-Card at the One-Level” runs to 28 pages.

There are almost no full deals, but the one in today’s diagram included a card-play point.

South gets to four hearts after West opens one no-trump, showing 15-17 points. West leads the club ace, cashes the club king, and gives his partner a club ruff. East shifts to the diamond 10. After winning with his ace, how should South proceed?

North’s two-club overcall was the Landy convention, showing both majors. South’s three-heart jump advance was game-invitational.

Lawrence gives only the skeletal bids of five of the most popular methods for competing against one no-trump. Sensibly, he spends far more space discussing what you need to act.

South has to play the trump suit without loss. The key is to count the high-card points. Declarer can see 25 points between the dummy and his hand. West, who promised at least 15 points, must have everything. South should lead his heart 10 and run it after West plays the six. The finesse is sure to win.
