Kinzinger talks conservation with students at Morris’ Saratoga School

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Saratoga Elementary School fourth-grade student Jaxon Claypool opened his highlighter and colored in his Bingo square.

The next clue was called and he looked around the board anxiously because he only had one more square to go and it was now his turn to yell the word “bingo!”

He was the first winner of Conservation Bingo on Monday during a special fourth grade-only event.

“J.R. Hock from Grundy Bank called and was looking at getting into a school for a special energy and conservation event. I thought it was a great way for the kids to hear from an outside source on a topic we talk about in the classrooms,” Saratoga Principal Joe Zweeres said.

Grundy Bank commercial banking officer J.R. Hock said the idea to branch out from financial literacy classes stemmed from the American Bankers Association Take Your Lawmaker to Work Week event.

She said she wanted to put a different spin on the idea.

Monday morning, 88 fourth-grade students made the trek from their classrooms to the gym for a visit from Illinois’ 16th District U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, to hear about ways to conserve energy and how to reduce waste in landfills.

They learned through a game of Bingo. Kinzinger, who has been in Congress since 2011, sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

“I wanted to talk to the kids today to get them to think in terms of saving water and gas.

Grundy Bank President and CEO Kevin Olson handed out Bingo papers and small yellow highlighters to all of the children in the bleachers, and Hock asked the children questions about the environment and Congress before she introduced Kinzinger to the students and teachers.

Kinzinger asked the students questions about what they knew about Congress.

He called on the students by T-shirt name and asked that they can call him “jacket guy.”

“I am your congressman and I go to Washington, D.C. When you are older, you can write me letters or call me and tell me how you want me to vote on certain topics,” Kinzinger said. “In D.C., one of the things we do is to try to figure out how to save energy

Each student had a Bingo sheet with good or bad conservation habits, and as Kinzinger asked them questions, they found the best answer on their board and colored in their answer.

There were two winners, Claypool and Emma Johnson.

Both received a Grundy Bank piggy bank and a picture with Kinzinger.

Fourth-grade teacher Terri Kelly said the visit fit into the curriculum because the students just learned about the three branches of government.

“This is so exciting. We have talked about writing our congressman about issues, so today’s event will create a good discussion when we get back to the classroom,” Kelly said.

Claypool said this was a good day all around because he had never won at Bingo or met a congressman.

“I thought a congressman would be serious, but he was funny and made jokes. He never acted serious while he was here today, but maybe he has to act serious at his job,” Claypool said.

After the game and discussion about conservation, Hock had the students form a line and Kinzinger signed each student’s bingo paper while he asked them their name, favorite subject and so on.

“This is a great out-of-theclassroom experience for the kids. They may not know exactly what a congressman does, but they know he is an important part of the government and that makes a good connection,” Zweeres said.

Grundy County unites to give area seniors extra Christmas cheer

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When presented Monday at Saratoga Tower with a Christmas gift, wrapped in light brown and white paper, Margaret Olson asked if she could keep it under her tree and wait to open it.

“Of course,” Home Instead Senior Care Client Service Coordinator Laurie Krischel said. “I’ll be here on Christmas Eve to make sure you waited,” Krischel said to Olson, with a laugh.

Olson and about 90 other Grundy County senior citizens will have something extra to look forward to on Christmas morning because of Home Instead Senior Care’s Be a Santa to a Senior program.

“I sure was surprised,” Olson said. “It’s nice to get a gift you don’t expect.”

The goal of the program is to provide seniors who are alone or impoverished with some holiday cheer.

First, seniors are asked to make and submit a Christmas wish list.

Next, the Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas tree was put on display Nov. 21 to Dec. 7 at Jewel-Osco in Morris. The tree was decked out in ornaments with seniors’ first names or initials on them, along with their gift requests.

Lastly, holiday shoppers picked ornaments from the tree, bought the items listed and turned them in, unwrapped, to the store.

“I can’t thank everyone who bought a present enough,” Krischel said. “If you were to look in the boxes, it’s amazing what people have gotten for the seniors.”

Home Instead Senior Care then collaborated with Community Nutrition Network, the Grundy County Health Department Senior Division, Jewel-Osco and local churches to collect, wrap and distribute the gifts.

Gegenheimer chosen as interim D-54 leader Board accepts the resignation of superintendent Teri Shaw

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Elementary School District 54 board meeting was run Monday night by district Principal Chris Maier in the absence of a superintendent.

Superintendent Teri Shaw submitted her letter of resignation last week, and it was effective at the end of the business day the Monday before the regular December board meeting started.

In regards to her resignation, the board handed out a news release stating that

Shaw’s leaving was by mutual agreement.

“On Dec. 14, 2015, by mutual agreement and settlement the Board of Education of Morris Elementary School District 54 and Superintendent Teri L. Shaw, decided to end their seven-year, eight-month contractual relationship effective Dec. 31, 2015,” the release stated.

Shaw, who was not present at the meeting, declined to state a reason for her resignation when contacted Friday.

She did say she is working on a book and, because of publishing timelines, she would

use her time to finish the book.

Board President Jerry White referred to the news release for the board’s comment, which stated: “The Board of Education acknowledges that during the superintendent’s tenure, she cooperated and collaborated with stakeholders within the district and in neighboring districts to improve the district’s educational programs and financial stability.”

In goes on to state: “In turn, the superintendent would like to thank and commend the past and present community members, parents, board of education, administration, staff and students for maximizing the success of the students of School District No. 54.”

A discussion was had before a vote to approve a contract with Illinois Association of School Boards for $7,400 to help the district find a superintendent to fill the position.

“I disagree with this contract. We should look at private firms, as well,” board member Joannie Johnston said. “With the history of this district, we should spend qual-

ity time searching.”

The board voted, 6-1, to approve using IASB for the search, with Johnston voting no.

The board also unanimously voted to approve an interim superintendent agreement with Al Gegenheimer, who retired in June as superintendent of Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201, at a cost of $500 a day for 90 days.

District 101 approves 2015 tax levy; final levy due in the spring

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The School District 101 Board approved Monday night, 6-0, the 2015 proposed tax levy.

Board member Lynn Vermillion was absent. No members of the public were present for the tax levy hearing at 6:15 p.m. None of the numbers were adjusted since the tentative levy was approved last month, District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said.

“The numbers reflect an expected 3.75 percent boost in Equalized Assessed Value in the district,” Halloran said.

al tax levy amount extended to the district will be decided by the county in the spring.

The corporate and special purpose property taxes extended or abated for 2014 were $6,061,828. The proposed corporate and special purpose property taxes to be levied for 2015 are $6,543,601.

This represents a 7.95 percent increase over the previous year.

The property taxes extended for debt service and public building commission leases for 2014 were $1,380,681. The estimated property taxes to be levied for debt service and public building commission leases for 2015 are $1,531,732.

This represents a 10.94 percent increase over the previous year.

The total property taxes extended or abated for 2014 were $7,442,509. The estimated total property taxes to be levied for 2015 are $8,075,333.

This represents a 8.50 percent increase over the previous year.

There also was a Bond Issue Notification Act hearing about the board’s intent to sell $1,700,000 in working cash bonds to increase the district’s working cash fund.

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Those in need during fire or other emergencies will be warmed by a gift from the Minooka Log Cabin Quilt Guild.

The guild presented five quilts each Dec. 10 to the Minooka Police and Fire departments. The colorful crib-sized quilts were given as a thankyou to the local departments, Guild president Linda Friant said.

“We appreciate the use of the village community room for free,” she said. “We wanted to do something to give back to the community.”

Vice president Beth Weigt added, “We’re a nonprofit, so this is our service project.’

The 48-by-60-inch quilts can be carried to disaster scenes by police or fire personnel.

“We will put them in command vehicles or ambulances,” Fire Chief Al Yancy Jr. said. “If there’s someone outside during a house fire, we can throw the blanket over them to help them stay warm. They [the quilts] have a more comfortable feeling than a white blanket.”

Guild member Maryann Feiertag said the idea is “to give them to that person. Like a comfort quilt.”

Group members said they worked about three months

putting the donated quilts together. The type of design on the quilts is a pattern called a “string” quilt. All the fabric was donated, and the group worked together and individually to get the quilts completed in the three months.

As the presentation was closing, Chief of Police Justin Meyer said he hoped that the guild can continue to keep the project going. The quilt guild was formed a number of years ago, and now meets at 10 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of each

month in the Community Room at the Minooka Village Hall.

The group also has a workshop on the second Thursday of the month.

The guild has about 16 members. Interested persons can call Friant at 815-475-4163.

Organizers seek to form taxing body to provide ambulance services to area

The new district plans to service ambulance calls for the Mazon Fire Protection District and the Verona Kinsman Fire Protection District – two volunteer fire districts that service the rural Grundy County area that includes Mazon, Verona and Kinsman as well as Good Farm, Highland and a portion of Erienna townships.

“The judge signed the order, and we took it to the circuit clerk and then delivered it to the county clerk’s office to ensure it will be on the primary ballot,” Halterman said.

If the referendum passes, the rescue squad district will go again in front of the court within 30 to 60 days, where it will be recognized, and in June, the Grundy County Board would be asked to approve a board for the district.

The district then would levy tax money in December 2016 to be collected in 2017.

Halterman said because the need for an ambulance district is immediate, organizers have approached other taxing bodies – such as the county and townships and villages that would be serviced by the district – and asked for help to raise enough money to get the district up and running.

Initially, the district would provide 12 hours daily of ambulance service staff to fill in the gap when local volunteers are at work and unable to respond to emergency calls.

She said despite donations, the district is still short $20,000 to start the program.

The district would cover 90 square miles in the southwest corner of the county. Currently, when volunteers are unable to respond, those in need of an ambulance have to wait for response from Dwight, Seneca or Morris, which have a longer response time.

Charity Gala raises Going on record donations SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Morris Hospital Auxiliary raised more than $158,000 for a new youth cardiac screening program at one of its most successful charity galas in the program’s 47-year history.

The 2015 Morris Hospital Auxiliary Charity Gala was held Nov. 14 at Jennifer’s Garden in Morris, with 400 guests attending.

“I believe this year’s cause really tugged at the heartstrings of our guests and supporters,” said Hannah Wehrle, Morris Hospital development officer. “The funds raised at the gala are going to allow Morris Hospital to launch Rhythm of Our Youth, a new screening program that will help identify area high school students who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death.”

Special guests at the gala included three families who lost a child to sudden cardiac death; as well as Brenda Walsh, a nurse at Morris Hospital whose son Kaleb died unexpectedly at age 14 in 2011.

After lead gifts totaling $18,000 were announced, the attendees donated another $58,000 within a matter of minutes during the “fund-anitem” segment of the evening.

Lead gifts of $5,000 each were donated by the Morris Hospital Medical Staff, Dr. John and Judie Roth, and the Morris Hospital Senior Leadership team. Anesthesia Consultants gave a lead gift of $1,500, Strategic Sourcing gave a lead gift of $1,000, and At Home Quality Care gave a lead gift of $500.

Morris Hospital plans to launch the Rhythm of Our Youth screening program at area high schools in the fall, at no charge to the students.

Guests at the gala also included a number of superintendents from area high schools, who were guests at a table sponsored by Exelon Nuclear – Dresden Station.

Longtime New York sports writer Phil Pepe dies

By MIKE FITZPATRICK The Associated Press NEW YORK – Phil Pepe, a revered baseball writer and radio voice who spent more than five decades covering sports in New York, died Sunday.

He was 80.

Pepe died of an apparent heart attack at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, his son, David, told The Associated Press.

A longtime New York Yankees beat writer who chronicled franchise greats from Mickey Mantle to Reggie Jackson and Derek Jeter, Pepe also authored dozens of books on some of the biggest names in sports. He covered such famous athletes as Muhammad Ali and Walt Frazier during a prolific career that spanned generations.

“He truly, truly loved what he did,” David Pepe said. “He always felt he was blessed to do what he did for a living. He had a real passion for baseball.”

Pepe joined the Yankees beat with the New York World Telegram & Sun in 1961, the year Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record, and covered the team for the

Pepe wrote the newspaper’s lead game story for every World Series from 196981 and then succeeded Dick

Young as its sports columnist in 1982, the Daily News said.

After leaving the paper in 1989, Pepe did morning sports for WCBS radio for

more than 15 years – including his popular “Pep Talk” segment.

He also was the director of broadcasting and a radio analyst for the Class A New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League from 19942005, the Daily News said.

In the meantime, Pepe churned out sports books at a vigorous pace. He wrote nearly 50 of them, including co-authoring Mantle’s autobiography “My Favorite Summer: 1956”, which rose to No. 7 on The New York Times bestseller list.

He co-wrote Bob Gibson’s autobiography, and wrote books with Whitey Ford, Gary Carter and Tim McCarver, among others. Pepe’s final book, in 2013, was on the Yankees’ celebrated “Core Four” of Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, the Daily News said.

“A giant among baseball writers who never got his true credit,” Hall of Fame baseball writer Bill Madden told the Daily News.

Pepe also was esteemed for the tireless work he did on behalf of the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

He was chapter chairman from 1975-76 and executive

director for the past 21 years.

“Legendary NY baseball writer. He was the heartbeat of our chapter. He will be sorely missed,” tweeted Mark Feinsand, current Yankees beat writer for the Daily News.

Pepe had attended every BBWAA awards dinner in New York since 1962 and ran the annual event for more than two decades.

“He was a driving force that kept our dinner alive and made it a special event that still attracts the top names in baseball,” chapter chairman Mike Puma of the New York Post said in an email.

Pepe graduated from St. John’s University and joined the New York World Telegram and Sun in 1957. He remained there until the newspaper went out of business in 1966, then wrote scripts with Howard Cosell for ABC radio, the Daily News said.

Citing a book by baseball historian Marty Appel, the Daily News said Pepe covered most of Ali’s championship fights, was the beat writer for the New York Knicks during their championship years in the early 1970s, covered the first Super Bowl and three Olympics.

LyondellBasell donates $10K to JJC SUBMITTED REPORT

MORRIS – LyondellBasell, a plastics, chemical and refining company, recently awarded $10,000 to Joliet Junior College.

The grant allows the college’s Process Control Instrumentation Technician program to purchase new equipment for classroom use.

“Joliet Junior College continues to lead the way in training future employees for our industry,” said LyondellBasell Morris Complex Site Manager Brian Angwin.

“Their students get handson experience with the same equipment found at our facilities, and that gives them a big advantage when they enter the workforce.”

Before the grant, students were forced to use donated

equipment with mismatched parts. This left students unable to complete projects as a team and in a timely manner.

The new equipment resolves that issue and provides a broader learning process.

“We are grateful for the investment LyondellBasell has made in our PCIT program and ultimately in our college,” JJC President Debra Daniels said. “The relationships we have with area employers are invaluable, and they are essential to the development of our technical programs and to the success of our students.”

Since 2013, LyondellBasell has donated $24,000 toward the PCIT program.

Morris Complex employees are active participants in the program, mentoring students and serving on the program’s advisory board.

Will-Grundy Medical Clinic wins Innovation Award SUBMITTED REPORT JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic was presented with the Innovation Award from the Illinois Association of Free & Charitable Clinics at the fifth annual Conference on Dec. 7 at Starved Rock State Park.

The Innovation Award is presented annually in recognition of innovative approaches to patient care that result in measurable improvements to patient health and well-being.

The WGMC was selected this year for its Care Coordination Program. The main goal of the program is to improve patient outcomes. The WGMC is implementing disease care management plans for 100 percent of its chronically ill patients.

All patients are offered ancillary services, including nutrition counseling and education, fitness classes and mental health counseling.

Through a partnership with Midwestern University and Roosevelt University, fourth-

year pharmacy students provide medication teach back and management counseling to clinic patients.

The Care Coordination Program produces quantifiable improvements in patient health and the unique structure of the program reduces costs for the WGMC while providing hands-on experiences for students.

The Illinois Association of Free & Charitable Clinics was formed to help strengthen and grow Illinois’ free and charitable clinics – without whom more than 40,000 patients would otherwise have no access to quality health care.

The IAFCC helps free and charitable clinics move effectively into the future; connects patients with clinics; and helps many stakeholder organizations who wish to work with or help clinics.

Minooka’s Parzych committed to being a Saluki

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Blake Parzych never enjoyed the college football recruiting process, so the Minooka senior was happy to end it when he committed to Southern Illinois Carbondale in late October.

At least, Parzych thought the process was over. A 3-8 season by the Salukis led to the firing of coach Dale Lennon on Nov. 30.

Parzych says he still will honor his commitment, but until Lennon’s permanent replacement is named, he is unsure if the offer still will be valid.

“Right now, they have a temporary coach (Nick Hill) and he told me that as long as he’s there, I’ll be there,” Parzych said. “My choice wasn’t about the coaching staff because I knew that at any point in time, that could change. My choice was about the best fit for me, and that is still [SIU]. But at the same time, I am talking to other coaches and keeping my options open and we’ll see what happens.”

At a Dec. 1 news conference, SIU athletic director Tommy Bell said he hopes to have a permanent coach in place by Christmas.

Bell said at the time that 11 recruits had committed to the school, but that with 85 returning student-athletes, there is not a need for a large recruiting class.

At the same time, he deemed recruiting as a reason to quickly fill the vacancy.

“We cannot afford to miss on the recruiting cycle,” Bell said.

According to Rivals, Parzych also has offers from Air Force, Butler, Lafayette, South Dakota and Western Illinois. Growing up, Parzych says, he gave very little thought to the idea of playing college football.

In fact, after playing football as a youth, he gave up the sport in seventh and eighth grades to focus on travel baseball.

Parzych returned to football as a freshman and started playing on the defensive line.

It did not take long for him to make an impact.

“In our ‘Mud Bowl’ game against Providence, I think I had about four sacks,” Parzych said. “It was around then that I started realizing football was the sport for me.”

Over the past two seasons, Parzych totaled 109 total tackles, 51 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks.

And during that time, he was part of the situation that

somewhat mirrors the one he could enter at SIU. Paul Forsythe replaced Bert Kooi as Minooka’s coach just as Parzych was heading into his freshman season.

“People sometimes don’t realize how much things can change under a new head coach – the staff, the traditions, even,” Parzych said.

After enduring losing seasons in each of the past three seasons, the Indians defeat-

ed a tough Plainfield North team in Week 9 this season to break into the 8A playoffs.

There, they were ousted in the opening round by No. 1 seed Huntley, but it was an ending to his high school football career that Parzych will not soon forget.

“The atmosphere of playing at Minooka is something you probably won’t find anywhere else. The brotherhood we had, it was just unbelievable,”

Parzych said. “I could’ve gone to other schools – I could’ve gone to Joliet Catholic – but I’m glad I played at Minooka.”

Parzych, the starting center for the Indians’ basketball team, credits Minooka assistant Matt Harding – who rose through the ranks of the program as a coach as Parzych was doing so as a player – with being a major force in his growth into the player he is today.

I’m sure most of us are enjoying the balmy days. To hit the mid-50s part way through December is a surprise for sure.

I used to think having above average temperatures during the typical cold months was a blessing. Then I found out otherwise.

Many years ago, a friend of mine who worked in the retail business said, “Unseasonable weather is bad for everyone.”

It took me some time to understand what he meant.

Then I became a sales rep.

Within the outdoors industry, there was one word that made each person cringe. It was the term “ice.” That simple three letter word could cause grown men to wince in pain.

The most seasoned buyers would scowl and move on to something else. What was the

problem? Why did that simple word mar everyone’s mood?

After more research, I learned most retail stores were stuck with loads of ice fishing equipment they purchased more than two years ago. At this point in time, we had enjoyed two unseasonably warm winters.

I remember rejoicing at the ability to cast a line in February. My customers felt the opposite.

If you spent tens of thousands of dollars on ice fishing gear for your store, that warm February meant you were probably going to lose money.

You had two choices.

The first one was to mark down your ice fishing selection and hope to unload it quickly. Sounds great, but the discounts mean less profits for the store.

The other option available

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers to retailers is to pack everything up and store it to sell again next year.

This takes time to pull down, pack up, and shelve.

Then you must remember to find it the next year and put it back out for display. All of this costs time and money.

Not to mention you now don’t have the latest and greatest stuff being advertised and pushed by the manufacturers. You have old stuff.

The trickle down effect is enormous. If a store cannot sell something, they have less available budget for other items.

If they have less budget, the manufacturers that rely

on selling product feel the pinch. It keeps going.

I was never aware of this until I entered the sales side.

But the reality is there. This example of ice fishing gear is just one.

Now think about how much money a store drops into stocking clothing. If warm weather persists throughout winter, that means there will be lots of gloves, boots, coats, and other winter accessories not sold.

While ice fishing gear accounts for just a small percentage of a store’s overall budget, the clothing line is just the opposite. Huge portions of a retail business might be allocated to clothing.

In fact, I know several fishing and hunting stores that actually went out of business because they spent too much on clothing that didn’t

A simple thing like not skating before training camp might have thrown some players off. At this point, Kane seems to be making a case for less summer ice-time.

One thing that’s clear. For all the controversies, Kane is

a good teammate who commands the respect and admiration of his fellow Hawks.

“He creates something every night,” defenseman Duncan Keith said. “It’s pretty special. A lot of it has to do with his work ethic and his desire, and how much he cares. His skill level gets talked about a lot. But one thing that doesn’t get mentioned as much is how much he cares, and how he wants to be the best.’’

We all make too many mistakes

David Bird, the prolific bridge-book writer from England, has got to the nitty-gritty of the game in “52 Bridge Mistakes to Avoid” (Master Point Press).

The highlighted errors are split 13 on bidding, 25 on declarer play and 14 on defense. Each chapter contains a few deals and ends with a list of useful tips.

This layout is in the chapter entitled “Not Thinking Straight,” which could refer to every mistake anyone makes.

Look at the West and North cards.

South is in four spades. West cashes his two top hearts, everyone following.

What should he lead at trick three?

North’s three-heart cue-bid showed spade support and at least game-invitational values.

At the table, West shifted to the club jack, hoping his partner had the king. However, South won with his king, drew trumps in four rounds, and conceded a trick to the diamond ace.

If East held the club king, South had accepted his partner’s game invitation with only 11 high-card points, which was extremely unlikely.

Since East clearly had a Yarborough, West should have led a low heart at trick three. (Not the queen, which would have established dummy’s jack.) East would have ruffed, forcing South to overruff. But now, if South drew trumps, when he led a diamond, West would have won and cashed two hearts. Or, if South turned to diamonds after one round of trumps, West would have taken the trick and led the heart queen to establish a trump trick for himself.

Counting high-card points on all deals will help you avoid numerous mistakes.

Many options are available to treat pain following a stroke Dear Dr. K: I’ve been in pain ever since I had a stroke about six months ago. What will relieve it?

Dear Reader: Pain is a frequent complication of stroke.

It generally falls into one of two types, local or central.

Local pain results from joint and muscle problems.

Strokes can make some muscles weak and stiff. That, in turn, can make the muscles hurt when they move (or are moved). It also can cause the bones in a joint moved by those muscles to shift out of their proper place, producing pain in the joint. Treatment is fairly straightforward and may involve a variety of options: • range-of-motion and stretching exercises; • over-the-counter or pre-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff scription pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); • use of a sling or armrest to support a weak shoulder; • strategic positioning of a weak leg while in a wheelchair or in bed; • cortisone injections to reduce inflammation.

Electrical stimulation of the involved muscles, botulinum toxin injections to relax tight and stiff muscles, or acupuncture may also help.

Less common, but more difficult to manage, is a neurological condition called central pain syndrome (CPS).

CPS results from damage to sensory pathways.

What are sensory pathways? Sensations (like pain, heat, touch, vibration) from all over the body travel up nerves to the spinal cord. From there they travel up the spinal cord to different centers in the brain. Strokes can affect those centers. As a result, the brain misinterprets normal sensory input as painful sensations.

Central pain is typically constant and moderate to severe in intensity. The pain may be felt over a large part of the body or in specific areas.

It is always on the side of the body affected by the stroke. It may be felt as a burning pain, pins and needles, or a pressing, sharp or aching pain.

Pain medications may not be effective. However, anticon-

vulsants such as gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) may help. Stress tends to increase the intensity of all symptoms. Therefore, managing stress may also help reduce pain.

Another stroke complication that causes pain is spasticity, an involuntary contraction of your muscles. This leads to stiff, tight muscles and tendons that make stretching difficult. Without treatment, the affected muscles may remain in abnormal and often painful positions. Treatments include: • physical therapy that involves stretching the affected muscles and using braces that hold the muscles in a normal position; • medications, including muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs known as benzodi-

azepines.

• Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, which can ease spasticity by blocking the signals sent from nerves to muscles. Injections of a different toxin, called phenol, reduce nerve impulses to the spastic muscle. A third possibility is an implanted pump that delivers a muscle relaxant to the spinal cord.

Finally, a doctor can surgically correct a tendon that has become contracted and permanently shortened due to spasticity. So you have many options to treat the pain you’re suffering following your stroke.
