Born: Dec. 7, 1964 Died: Dec. 11, 2014 Michael T. Graman, 50, of Morris, Illinois passed away suddenly on Thursday, December 11, 2014.

Mike was born on December 7, 1964, in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He was the son of Josie (nee Cole) Graman and the late John Graman.

Mike was a graduate of Homewood Christian Academy in Homewood, Illinois. He married Linda (nee Allen) in 1986. Mike and Linda have lived in Morris for the past 16 years where they raised their family. Mike loved the Lord and was an active member of the Minooka Bible Church. He was a painter by profession and was fondly known as “Mike The Painter”. He enjoyed fishing, talking and laughing with friends, but most of all Mike loved spending time with his children and grandchildren in all their activities.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Linda and their five children, Bethany (Gary Brecker) Elkin, Breanna, Allen, Abigale and Kenneth; his three grandchildren, Taylor, Anthony and Charlie; his mom, Josie; his four brothers, John,

Steve (Ronda), Glenn (Karen) and Mark (Diane); his mother-in-law, Jerry Allen; numerous sisters-inlaw, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Mike is also survived by a multitude of supportive friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his son, Jacob; his father, John; and his father-in-law, James Allen.

Visitation for Mike will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 West Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Minooka Bible Church located at 412 North Wabena Avenue, Minooka followed by a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery located at 1300 Cemetery Road, Morris. A luncheon will be served at Minooka Bible Church immediately following the graveside service.

Memorial contributions may be made directly to Mike’s wife Linda.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Students in the Realizing Educational and Career Hopes program based at Minooka Community High School learn more than reading, writing and arithmetic.

They learn how to turn life skills into a business.

For the second year, REACH students became real-life bakers as they fulfilled an order for 137 dozen cookies for the Grundy County Housing Authority to be given as gifts to its residents.

“I thought it was a really neat idea,” GCHA CEO Brent Newman said. “It’s more about supporting the REACH program, which helps people with disabilities be better prepared to live on their own. I want these kids to be successful.”

REACH is a program for students with special needs in high school, as well as for those with special needs transitioning out of high school.

Mary Jo Maland, REACH high school teacher, said each of the classrooms, both high school and transition students, worked together to bake five types of cookies to fulfill the orders.

They baked peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip and sugar cookies along with snickerdoodles, which they carefully packaged in mason jars with decorative lids filled

As the students sat waiting for Newman to pick up his order, they talked about the work that went into the cookie packages and the reason they were being bought.

Titus Harrison said the cookies were going to the residents at the Grundy County Housing Authority because they might not have the money to make the cookies like his class did.

All of the classes said they would be happy if someone gave them cookies, so they

hoped the residents would be happy with their hard work.

Students said they learned many lessons fulfilling the order, including rules about measurement for recipes, and how to use tools like a cookie cutter to make the cookies fit into the mason jars.

“After they were done, they look nice,” student Bailey French said.

Sandra Freeman said it was hard to make the cookies, but she knows it will make someone feel special to get them.

er said REACH and the cookie project brings joy to the community and through REACH they are becoming stronger students.

The students spend part of their day behind a desk, but a big portion of their time in the program is learning life skills like cooking, cleaning, budgeting and how to be part of their community.

“We work on lunch plans, maps, we read and we do coins,” Christa Stanley said about her school day.

likes to go into the community, such as when they learn to shop at Wal-Mart and go out to lunch at local restaurants.

For student Dylan Boulanger, the idea of running his own business is what he likes to learn about, and the Christmas cookie program does just that.

Newman said residents at Saratoga Tower, Gardner Commons and Mazon Park Place will receive the cookies, which will be handed out by his staff.

“They were thrilled last year to receive them,” Newman said.

Morris YMCA starts Personnel committee picks start date office hours Tuesday for new human resources director

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Although the building is not quite complete, the Morris YMCA will be open for office hours starting Tuesday.

The Morris Community YMCA is remodeling the former Morris City Hall at 320 Wauponsee St. to be its temporary home until the organization can build a new facility.

The lease contract is for three years, with a two-year extension option, so the organization has a local presence while finalizing plans to build a new center.

Renovation of the former City Hall is underway and the interior is being remodeled to include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a weight room, a supervised playroom, multipurpose room, aerobics studio, locker rooms and community space.

The office hours begin Tuesday and will be held through Dec. 23 on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.

The grand opening of the new location will be from noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 10.

“There is still some remodeling going on, so we ask

people to be understanding because there is activity still going on,” said Missy Durkin, operations director for the Morris YMCA. From the outside, the building can be deceiving, she said.

It is much larger than it looks, especially with the changes the Y is making.

Durkin said the largest changes being made are in the former police department side of the building, which is being completely opened up. As of Friday the construction of the front portion of the building, where the city’s service counter used to be, will be pretty much completed.

The largest project still underway is the locker rooms, Durkin said.

“It’s bright and vibrant with the YMCA colors throughout the building,” she said.

During the office hours, membership applications for premier membership are being taken. Those who join by Dec. 31 will have their joining fee waived, typically $120 for a family. They will receive 12 months’ membership for the price of 11, with next December’s fee waived. Premier members also will get access to an exclusive opening Jan. 5 through Jan. 9 before the facility opens to the public.

Personnel committee members approved the start date for Deborah Jankiewicz at a meeting Thursday.

“She has to give a fair and adequate notice to her employer. We’re trying to accommodate with the holidays,” said Vicki Geiger, committee chairman, after the meeting.

Geiger called Jankiewicz to inform her of the start date after the meeting.

Debra Johnson, immediate past human resources director, said she looks forward to bringing in the new director and helping her get adjusted.

Jankiewicz accepted the official offer for human resources director Thursday morning.

She has 15 years of human resources experience and works as a human resources practitioner for the village of Alsip.

The new director was selected out of 13 applicants for the position. Four candidates were interviewed.

On Nov. 10, the full board accepted Johnson’s resignation as human resources director. Johnson worked intermittently as human resources director up until Dec. 1. But she still will help train the new hire on nights and weekends.

She resigned because the personnel committee wanted a full-time director.

Before the approval, Johnson suggested postponing the start date because many employees will be on vacation.

“I think that’s a quiet time over here. I’m not sure if that’s the best first week to start,” Johnson told the committee.

Geiger also had her doubts about the start date before its approval.

“I don’t want to put her in the office for five days and nobody is there. It could be intimidating,” Geiger said.

In response, committee Vice Chairman Ann Gill said quietness in the administration building during that week might be the best time for Jankiewicz to start, because she can get settled in and get a feel for the office.

Senior citizen group asks area to be a Santa for seniors

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Laurie Krischel, client service coordinator at Home Instead Senior Care, will be playing Santa again this year with the help of the community.

This is the third year she’s helped head the Be a Santa to a Senior program, providing Grundy County seniors who are alone this Christmas with a gift.

“It is heartbreaking to think of the senior members of our community spending the holidays all by themselves, without any gifts or any way to celebrate the season,” Christine Schouten, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office, said in a news release. “But all too often, that’s what happens when seniors live alone. It can be a really tough time of year for them.”

The group receives the names of local seniors in need from the Community Nutrition Network and the Grundy County Health Department Senior Division, and was approached this year by Regency Care of Morris, formerly Walnut Grove Nursing Home, with the names of more seniors who fit the criteria of the program.

Krischel said this year the group received 100 names of Grundy County seniors, which is the highest number it has served.

She said they ask the senior to fill out a form stating what they would like for Christmas and those forms are handed back and placed on a paper ornament that is placed on a Christmas tree at Jewel-Osco in Morris.

Be a Santa to a Senior ornaments adorned a tree at Jewel-Osco in Morris with the name of a resident and their wish list for community members to take and buy them gifts, Laurie Krischel, client service coordinator at Home Instead Senior Care said.

“It’s so sad, we had one person ask for toilet paper for Christmas,” she said.

On Friday afternoon, only three names were left hanging on the tree to be chosen. The program was suppose to run through Friday, but Krischel decided to leave the tree up to see if the last few names could be chosen.

Holiday shoppers pick ornaments from the tree, buy the items listed and return them unwrapped (and with the ornament attached) to the store. As of Friday, she said only about 25 percent had been returned.

“A ton will come back this weekend. People grab them one week when they are shopping and bring them back the next week when they are shopping again,” she said.

Last year only two names weren’t returned with gifts, but donations from local business owners allowed her to fill in the gaps for those who weren’t chosen or who’s name wasn’t returned.

This year, the group is partnering with Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehab, which has residents who have offered to help wrap the gifts.

On Wednesday, Krischel said organizers will load the gifts collected, the wrapping paper and a tray of cookies and head over to Park Pointe to get to wrapping.

OPINION Topinka liked people, but loved Illinois SPRINGFIELD – It’s a question of macaroni or steak?

That’s how Judy Baar Topinka explained the problems with one of Rod Blagojevich’s state budgets to me years ago.

“When I’m short on money, I eat macaroni, not steak,” she explained, adding that Blagojevich had state government dining on steak when a pasta diet would be much more appropriate.

Illinoisans lost our comptroller, Judy, on Wednesday after she suffered a stroke. I’ll miss her unvarnished comments and her straightforward manner.

After her 2006 loss to Blagojevich in the race for governor, she didn’t like to even say his name. She simply substituted Blago’s moniker with the word “garbage.”

“When I lost to Garbage …”

Blagojevich beat her by ridiculing her intelligence with TV ads that asked, “What was she thinking?”

After that election, one can’t help but wonder: What were the voters thinking?

Judy was bright, energetic and driven. But there was nothing urbane or sophisticated about her.

She strolled the statehouse corridors in thrift store outfits with two mongrel rescue dogs in tow. Her successor as state treasurer, Alexi Giannoulias, told me once he inherited a Capitol office filled with dog hair and cigarette smoke.

A hard pack of Marlboro Reds and a plastic mug of convenience store coffee were with her wherever she went.

I’d get clippings of my newspaper column in the mail with complimentary comments from her scrolled on the borders. My wife received flowers or cards with the birth of each of our children.

In public life, Judy, a former newspaper reporter, was a stalwart advocate for greater transparency in government. During her time as comptroller she put the state’s “checkbook” online so taxpayers could see how their money was being spent.

Topinka served 12 years as state treasurer, four as comptroller and 14 years in the state Legislature.

Although she had served as GOP state party chairman, she wore the Republican mantle lightly.

Once when we were standing in line in a Springfield grocery store, she told me she was heading across town that night to a Mike Madigan party.

I paused and said, “Isn’t that a fundraiser for Democrats?”

She laughed and said, “Yeah, but he doesn’t care if I’m there, and I like being around the people.”

That was Judy. She liked people, and she loved Illinois.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Before this volleyball season started, Morris junior Kaylin Korte already had verbally committed to continue her career at University of Illinois.

With that decision, it took some pressure off her having to deal with the many college offers that were sure to come.

However, it did put more pressure on her by putting a big target on her back.

As it turns out, that didn’t bother her at all, as Korte delivered team-leading numbers of 395 kills, 310 digs and 54 blocks. For her efforts, Korte has been named the Morris Daily Herald’s 2014 Volleyball Player of the Year.

“There was a lot less stress this season because I had already committed to U of I,” Korte said. “I was able to focus on just one thing, and that was playing volleyball. But even with that pressure off, I felt some pressure to prove myself every time I went out there.

“I knew that because other teams had heard I had already committed that they would be bringing their best at me. But having them bringing their best all the time made me better in pressure situations because I was facing those all the time.”

Morris coach Jackie Litwiller enjoyed having not only Korte’s physical talent, but her leadership, as well. Especially when, because ofinjuries and players moving away, the Redskins began practice at the start of the season with a only six players. Most of the first half of the year was spent trying to bring players up from the freshman and sophomore teams and finding the right mix of people on the court. In that respect, Korte was a blessing to the Redskins program.

“All the girls looked up to her,” Litwiller said. “It was nice to have her to fall back on, knowing that she would lead the girls and never stop pushing. The other girls

It would be easy for someone with Kaylin’s physical ability to coast a bit in practice, but she never did.

“She knows she still has to improve. She may have been working on some different things than the other girls, but she was working just as hard.”

Although Korte’s ability to

put down a kill at the net gets the oohs and aahs from the crowd, she works just as hard when she is in the back row, making her a complete player.

“She is a very consistent player,” Litwiller said. “She can direct people on the court to where they need to be. She did a lot of that this year, and it will really help us out next year when we have a lot of people coming back that will already know how to work on

the floor together.”

Korte, who stands 6-feet, wants to have that experience of playing all six rotations, because she still isn’t sure what Illinois’ plans will be for her when she gets there.

“I am not that tall for college,” she said. “I have no idea what they will want me to do when I get there. I want to be sure I am able to play all six rotations. I like playing defense because I want to try to

make the other hitters on the team better. That all starts with a good pass on defense.”

It’s that type of unselfishness that sets her apart.

“Kaylin never gave up on anything,” Litwiller said.

“She kept the other players going and wanted the team to do well. And, the other girls saw her fighting to the end every match and that made them come to practice to work that much harder.”

Hoelscher: “Emily moved to the middle this season and was much more comfortable in that position. She isn’t very loud or flashy, but she sure got other teams’ attention when she ran the slide attack.”

Allison Papesh – Freshman, outside hitter, second on team in kills (160), 113 service points (didn’t start serving until the second half of the season), 24 aces, 26 total blocks ... Hoelscher: “Alli may be a freshman, but she rarely played like one. She came up with big plays in big matches often. Early on, she struggled with shot selection, but once she started expanding her options, she found more success. Her serving was a key for us in the second

half of the season. We had her as our first server because she was so consistent and got us on the board right away.

We look forward to watching her grow as a player for the next three years.”

Cynthia Ley – Middle hitter, senior, team leader in blocks (65), 71 kills, .250 hitting percentage, 30 aces, will play at Furman University next year ... Hoelscher: “Tall and imposing at the net, Cynthia became a blocking force. She is a big leaper and can cover a lot of area at the net. She was able to control opposing hitters very well.”

At the bridge table, a short suit is not valued till a fit comes. Look at today’s North hand. What would he respond if partner opens one diamond, one heart or one spade?

Over one diamond, the singleton is not good news; North should quietly bid one heart, four-card suits up the bidding ladder. But if South opens in a major, that diamond singleton is worth three points, making North’s hand re-evaluate to 11 support points – sufficient for a game-invitational jump to three of the major.

South might dabble his toe in the slam water by rebidding four hearts, a control-bid (cue-bid) showing that ace and denying a minor-suit ace. (Imagine North’s having a singleton heart and two aces.) North, of course, would sign off in four spades.

After West leads the heart queen, how should South plan the play?

South has four losers, one in each suit. But he has 10 tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club.

He must just make sure that he does not lose those four tricks first.

The careless declarer wins trick one and immediately plays a trump.

However, East wins and returns a heart, after which South finishes down one.

The more thoughtful declarer realizes that he must do something about that heart loser immediately.

So, he either wins the first trick on the board and plays a diamond, or takes the first trick in his hand and plays a club. Either way, South does not lose a heart trick.

Researchers set out to determine whether probiotics work against constipation. They analyzed 14 studies that met their criteria for a well-done study. All were clinical trials that randomly assigned people with constipation to take either

probiotics or a placebo (or other control treatments).

The researchers found that on average, probiotics speeded up “gut transit time” by 12.4 hours. They increased the number of weekly bowel movements by 1.3. And they helped soften stools, making them easier to pass.

There’s not enough evidence yet to recommend a specific probiotic for constipation.

Until there is, experimenting on your own is probably a safe bet. Probiotics don’t seem to have any side effects, and they are generally considered safe.

Fermented or cultured dairy products are a good

source of probiotics. These include yogurt and buttermilk.

Other sources include miso, tempeh and soy beverages.

The bacteria occur naturally in some of these foods. In other products, they are added during preparation. You can also consult with a registered dietitian who is familiar with probiotics.

Probiotics also are available as dietary supplements. You can find a variety of them on drugstore and supermarket shelves. Let your doctor know if you are using probiotics.

Whether or not you decide to try probiotics, eating more insoluble fiber should help

your constipation. Insoluble fiber is found in the skin, peels and husks of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It passes through your digestive tract without breaking down, creating “bulk” for your stools.

There also are various powders containing fiber available over-the-counter at any drugstore. In my experience, the type containing dextrin works better for many people than the type containing methylcellulose.
