Quilt auction scheduled for Sunday in Morris MORRIS – Four quilts from a member’s collection will be on display in the Upper Fellowship Hall at the First Presbyterian Church in Morris this weekend.

The quilts will be sold by silent bid auction with all monies going to the Loving Deeds Quilters of the church. Bids will be opened after 10 a.m. Sunday worship at the Fellowship Hour.

The quilts are varied sizes and ages – vintage ones from about 1915 and 1918 to modern ones from the 1980s and 1990s.

There is a wonderful variety of colors and styles – appliqué and trapunto, hand stitched and machine stitched.

The Loving Deeds Quilters of First Presbyterian Church have been crafting beautiful quilts since 2005. Recipients of the quilts have included children at the Kemmerer Village group home in Assumption, the first baby born at the Morris Hospital, and a family assisted by the Senior High Mission Trip each summer. In 1987, ten years after the death of her husband, Rosa founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development. One of its programs takes young people of different ethnicities on tours of North American places historically important to the Civil Rights Movement.

MORRIS – With the right attitude, even a big loss can be used to a team’s advantage.

Morris wrestling coach Jon Lanning thinks his team had the right attitude Thursday night in a 71-6 defeat at the hands of perennial power DeKalb in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference matchup.

“DeKalb has a very good program,” Lanning said. “(Coach) Mike (Pater) does a real good job up there. It’s good for us to see a team like this.

Most of the teams in the Northern Illinois Big 12 are ranked, so there aren’t many guaranteed wins on our schedule.

That benefits us at the end of the year when we get into regionals.

“One thing about this sport is that you have to have a short memory. You can’t get too high or too low. I didn’t see any of our kids come off the mat too low tonight, so that’s good. We have a young team and not a lot of experience, and wrestling a team like DeKalb will only give us some good experience.”

The match started at 170 pounds, and DeKalb’s James Corallejo took a 5-0 lead after one period after a takedown and three near-fall points against Morris’ Ryan Olsen.

Corallejo pinned Olsen with 22 seconds left in the second period to give the Barbs a 6-0 lead.

Two more pins followed, as Ethan Egenlson beat Ryan Kowalczyk in 3:13 at 182 and Leif Williams triumphed in 57 seconds at 195. Trent Johnson won by forfeit at 220 to give DeKalb a 24-0 lead.

Morris then got its only win in the 285-pound match as Andrew Faught ran his record to 6-0 on the year, all by pin. This one took a little longer than usual, as he went into the third period against Noah Cooper.

Faught took down Cooper in the first round, but wasn’t able to roll him over, and Cooper escaped. The period ended with Faught ahead, 2-1. The same thing happened in the second round, and Faught had to take a break to take a breath from

16 Learning patience can vastly improve outdoor experiences I had an interesting conversation with some students of mine last week. We had been discussing story elements like setting, characters, plot, etc.

We then talked about how the setting of a story influences the decisions the characters make. These decisions and choices can then be analyzed to determine character traits.

What type of characters are they? Do their decisions lead us to believe they are mean, kind, caring?

The particular story we were working on placed two characters in a blizzard. They were trying to find food for their village. The events unfurled and it became apparent that this was a last-ditch effort to save the community from starvation. The characters, an old man, and a young woman, braved the elements to find their quarry. The young woman was anxious to get into the action, to find the game that would feed their people, and strike.

The old man, despite the desperate situation, showed tremendous patience. He took his time and often appeared to know what was going to happen before it actually did.

The kids picked up on this and found it interesting that the old man could show such restraint when needing food so badly. When I asked the class what character trait the old man demonstrated, they almost unanimously chose patience.

As outdoorsman, I thought this story might teach us as well. Think back to when you started hunting or fishing.

The only thing on your mind was being successful. You yearned to catch a fish or shoot your first deer. These feelings are normal and expected.

In my first years of bowhunting, I can think of countless times when I needed more restraint. I might draw back too early and spook the deer, maybe I rushed to my stand making excess noise.

There have also been plenty of times when I climbed out of my stand too early and scared off a nice deer when I was precariously perched halfway down the ladder. After each

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers incident I scolded myself for not showing more patience.

The same thing can be said for my first years of tournament fishing. There were many times when I left an area too soon, fished too fast, or was too quick to change lures when deep down I knew I was doing the right thing. It’s hard to recognize when our impatience hampers our success. To solve this problem, most of us rely on experience.

Countless moments of being unsuccessful teach us that the extra patience, the extra care and effort to do things the right way, is often the difference between just another frustrating outing and the chance to be in the right place at the right time. Some of us learn quicker than others. I fear that my learning curve is much longer than most.

If I take a step back and try to think of all the possible character traits that a person who loves the outdoors needs, patience rises to the top every time.

Think of outdoor photographers and birdwatchers. How many hours do they spend pursuing that perfect photo, or the fleeting moment when a bird flies past that they have never seen before. These enthusiasts quickly learn that patience is an asset to their endeavors.

Parents of my students often ask me where I get my patience. The more I think about it, I would have to say that spending a lifetime in the outdoors has blessed me with the perfect amount of patience and understanding that can be applied to my job. I would bet that many of you could say the same thing.

As you take to the woods and waters this winter, don’t rush things. Be prepared, put the time in, and be patient.

Great rewards and memories are just waiting to be discovered.

Judge’s race shows election issues Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier won retention in November’s election.

That’s hardly news. No Illinois Supreme Court justice has ever lost a retention bid.

What is news is that it took until Dec. 1 to officially determine whether Karmeier passed the 60 percent threshold he needed to keep the seat in the 37 southernmost Illinois counties voting on his retention.

When all the votes finally were counted, Karmeier received 60.77 percent of the vote. All the drama was caused by several attorneys and law firms seeking to oust Karmeier spending more than $1 million on a multimedia campaign that portrayed the justice as partial to big business. According to the Madison-St. Clair Record, the lawyers financing the negative campaign against Karmeier stand to gain about $2 billion in fees if judgments that were overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2005 are restored.

The whole thing left an unpleasant taste in Karmeier’s mouth. He told The Associated Press requiring judges to get 60 percent of the vote to win retention makes them unfairly vulnerable to influences of special-interest groups bent on unseating them, punctuating “the need for changes” to that process.

“That fact that you need a 60-percent plurality indicates that a small group could affect the election,” he said, noting he weathered an “overwhelmingly negative campaign no one should be subjected to.”

Special interest having political influence? Money deciding elections? Negative campaigns?

This is par for the course, Judge Karmeier. We’ve reached this point because of decisions lawmakers and judges have made along the way.

It seems it took a judge’s seat to be threatened by money and special interest for a judge to take notice.

“Certainly this election gives me some incentive to work with others in the system to look at changes because of the emphasis of an unprecedented amount of money to [unsuccessfully] remove me from office,” Karmeier said. “This could happen to any judge.”

It’s more than how we elect judges that needs to be examined. How money influences all politics needs to be looked at.

Perhaps, this can be a start.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Hollywood, Christmas movies and our secular advent The blitz begins while jack-o’-lanterns are fresh and Thanksgiving turkeys are still frozen: a manic parade of hip elves, sexy angels, reluctant Santas, wisecracking families, toy-obsessed children and even those Euro-trash terrorists who crash holiday office parties.

Entertainment industry pros still call them “Christmas movies.”

While the logic may be circular, a “Christmas movie is a movie that everyone expects to be shown on television during the Christmas season two or three years after it was released, and then at Christmas for years and years after that,” said entertainment scribe Hank Stuever, author of “Tinsel: A Search for America’s Christmas Present.”

“It’s easy to explain why people think ‘Love Actually’ is a Christmas movie, or ‘Home Alone’ is a Christmas movie, or ‘Elf’ is a Christmas movie. What’s hard to explain is why ‘Die Hard’ is a Christmas movie.”

All it takes for a movie to earn this label is a few

This means adding symbolic dollops of decorations, lights, songs, tears, travel, parties and shopping to a family-friendly script, said Stuever, a veteran Washington Post reporter. Most importantly, these movies can be chopped up and surrounded by all of the advertisements that power the season.

“The television is always right there in the middle of everything, and everyone in the room – all ages – needs to agree to watch what’s on,” he said.

Skeptics might ask how “Christmas movies” are linked to the actual holy season on the Christian calendar. That misses the point, said Stuever. The rites depicted in these movies are not about Christmas, as much as they are evidence of how most Americans actually celebrate Christmas.

For centuries, Chris-

tians prepared for the 12-day Christmas season – which begins on Dec. 25 – with four solemn weeks of Advent. “What we have now is a kind of secular Advent. ... That’s what we see in ‘A Christmas Story,’” noted Stuever.

While believers used to fast and pray during Advent, now “we shop and watch television.”

At the opposite pole of the Christmas-movie spectrum is the Golden Age Frank Capra classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” noted Catholic film critic Steven Greydanus, who runs the DecentFilms.com website.

Rather than depicting a holiday season centering on gift giving and festivities, it offers a parable – which peaks with shouts of “Merry Christmas!” – about pain, greed, faithfulness, sacrifice and, ultimately, redemption. It’s almost impossible to picture a similar film being made today, let alone by a Catholic filmmaker who wove religious symbolism and themes into his story.

So what’s the ultimate message?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Greydanus noted in one popular modern holiday vision, “The Santa Clause 2,” the Santa Claus character tells adults assembled for a dreary holiday party that they must remember “what the true spirit of Christmas is all about.” That turns out to be a wave of childlike wonder produced – literally – by bags of toys.

“So in the end, a good Christmas movie these days is one that fits the narrative we see all around us,” Greydanus added. “It’s supposed to provide us with happy, joyful feelings and a wave of nostalgia that we have been taught to associate with Christmas.

“Whether that has anything to do with the meaning of the real Christmas season is another matter altogether. But it seems to be hard to make movies about that.”

I agree with North’s opening bid. A good six-card suit and two aces make that hand too strong for a weak twobid. (If South has, say, the diamond king, heart ace and club king, three notrump will be a strong favorite. With a good long minor, always think “three no-trump.”)

West knew of at least a 10-card heart fit, so jumped to four hearts, the 10-trick level. Then after two passes, what should South have done? (Yes, maybe East should have bid five hearts!)

South liked his hand for offense, so understandably rebid five clubs.

North corrected to five spades, and all passed. (Agreed, East might have sacrificed in six hearts doubled, which would have cost only 300.)

Five spades would have failed if West had guessed to lead a club, but why would he have done that? After the heart-ace start, South ruffed, drew two rounds of trumps and ran the diamond jack. Declarer was able to discard four clubs from his hand on dummy’s long diamonds.

Mom recruits family to make holiday happy for co-worker Dear Abby: I work with a wonderful, good-hearted young woman who holds a low-paying job. She’s raising three children alone, and I know she struggles to provide the necessities. I have learned that the holidays at their home are pretty meager.

When I got home I sent my hostess a thank-you note for her hospitality. I haven’t spoken to her since.

Over the years, I have entertained many guests in my home. I have always provided them with meals, drinks, towels and a clean room. I have never left a note for anyone to clean. Is there a new etiquette policy for guests that I don’t know about? – Still Upset in

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Christmas is often about tradition, whether it be cutting down the perfect tree or hanging a handmade ornament that brings back memories.

Scott and Wanda Stewart of Morris have created a Christmas tradition with their sons Kieran and Lachlan. Each year, the family packs up and heads out to Wilmington to Tammen Treeberry Farm to pick out the perfect tree for their home, and then heads to Polk-A-Dot Drive-in in Braidwood for lunch.

“We make a family day of it,” Scott said. “I’ve always cut down my own tree; it reminds me a lot of my mom.”

Scott’s mother, Sharon Stewart, was very particular about the tree she wanted each year. It needed to be short and fat with long needles. Scott prefers a taller, thinner tree with short needles for the majestic feel he wants in his living room with tall cathedral ceilings.

“I like the tall trees,” said Kieran, 10, agreeing with his dad.

Wanda, on the other hand, grew up with artificial Christmas trees and would be just as happy to put one up each year rather than going out to cut down their own.

“Real trees are a lot of work,” she said. “But I love the

Bruce Tammen, owner of the Tammen Treeberry Farm where the Stewarts buy their tree each year, said the pleasant scent from real Christmas trees over artificial ones is desirable among customers. The experience of going out and cutting one down is another plus.

Eleven-year-old Lachlan doesn’t care as much about the tree, but he does care about the candy canes that hang from it – another tradition passed down from Scott’s mother.

In Seneca, Barbara Guffey is making new Christmas traditions with her family, who moved to the area this year from Texas.

“I’ve had artificial trees, but I prefer the live tree,” Guffey said. “The whole smell of it, the festivities of going to pick it up, everything.”

She said growing up in Texas, her family had property where Christmas trees grew and they traditionally went out each year to cut one for the

family home.

This year she loaded up the family and went to Settlers Pond Shelter in Beecher, where they not only got to pick out a tree, but they also were able to sit with Santa and see the many animals the shelter has living on the 60-acre facility.

“All the kids went with as a family, and we made a trip of it,” Guffey said. “We walked in and they put antlers on the kids and they had a blast.”

The tradition she’s started includes hats, mittens and scarves – things she didn’t need to put on the kids in Texas to go find their tree.

“It’s colder here, and we get to have more hot chocolate. It just makes everything more traditional feeling,” she said.

She said she likes the fact the money spent on the tree at Settlers Pond goes toward the many rescued animals housed there, including kangaroos, llamas and monkeys.

Pinky Janota, shelter owner, said they started selling Christmas trees 10 years ago and she’s watched many of the same families return every year, making her part of their Christmas traditions.

“We’ve had a lot of new faces this year, but about 75 percent of our sales is to reoccurring customers,” Janota said. “The Christmas trees are cut a few days before Thanksgiving so they are fresh and all the proceeds go back to the shelter.”

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Holiday fires that originate from Christmas trees have become a rare occurrence thanks to education and the improvement of Christmas lights over the years, Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Capt.

But he warns people still need to be careful when decorating.

When it comes to live trees, Wilson said freshness is a key factor.

“A tree you go to a tree farm and cut yourself is very fresh opposed to a tree in a Christmas tree lot,” Wilson said. “There is no way to know

when the tree was harvested, packaged and trucked to the lot.”

Keeping the tree watered is the most important thing to do at this time of year, and people should monitor the water levels daily.

According to safety tips issued by the Coal City Fire Protection District, when purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green; needles are hard to pull from branches; and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground the tree should not lose many needles.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – Ryan Smith, 19, of Morris was a fun-loving kid who loved diesel pickup trucks, according to Andy Kacena, Grundy Area Vocational Center automotive instructor.

“He was a great kid and hard worker,” Kacena said Thursday morning.

Smith died Wednesday night when he swerved off Interstate 55 in Channahon Township after being cut off by a semitrailer, Illinois state police said.

Smith was driving north about 7:30 p.m. in a Ford pickup in the left lane when a semitrailer changed lanes and cut him off, witnesses told state police. Smith swerved to avoid hitting the semitrailer. He was ejected from his pickup as it rolled over several times in the median ditch before the truck came to rest in the southbound lanes south of the Route 6 interchange.

Smith was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Smith was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

Smith spent his senior year at GAVC not only attending his Automotive 2 class, but also being a teacher’s assistant in the afternoon where he would come back to GAVC and help students in Automotive 1 with their labs, Kacena said.

“I’ve learned a lot from

them,” Smith said of the GAVC in a February Morris Daily Herald article. “When I first started my junior year, I knew only a little bit, but they’ve taught me so much.”

Cody Decker of Morris met Smith when Smith moved to Morris during their high school years and said Smith was an outgoing person who always spoke his mind.

“He spoke his mind, but he also was one of those people that if you needed help he’d do his best to try to help you,” Decker said.

Decker said Smith loved working on cars, jacked up

trucks and mudding.

Mary Bookwalter, friends with Smith’s mother, Rachael Harr, said Smith was a typical 19-year old who was happy-golucky and goofy. A boy who adored his mother.

Bookwalter has started a donation page on gofundme.com to help raise money for his funeral.

“I know how devastating it is to worry about funeral costs,” Bookwalter said about starting the fund. “If I can do anything to help, I will.”

Funeral arrangements were not immediately known Thursday.

A distraction burglary is a crime targeted at vulnerable older people living alone. Offenders pose as door-to-door salesmen, contractors, utility workers or the like and attempt to gain the victim’s confidence enabling them to gain entry into the home. Once inside, the offender will keep the victim distracted and another offender enters the home and steals valuables, according to the release.

The recent case in Morris was a male white offender in his early 30s, 5’7” tall with dark hair and mustache. He was wearing prescription glasses. He was reported as wearing a striped orange and green construction coat. The sub-

ject told the resident he was there to inspect her water pipes and was driving a white pickup truck.

Once the subject left, the resident noticed missing jewelry.

“We can’t stress enough, residents should not allow subjects

they do not know into their homes,” police said in the release.

6 Grundy has new human resources director

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Deborah Jankiewicz, human resources practitioner for the village of Alsip, has accepted an offer to become the new human resources director for Grundy County.

Jankiewicz will start early next year and Debra Johnson, the immediate past director for human resources, will continue to assist in that department until then, according to board member Vicki Geiger.

Geiger said Jankiewicz has 15 years of human resources experience.

The new director’s hometown was not immediately available, but Geiger said Jankiewicz lives closer to Morris than Alsip.

“I’m not currently aware of any requirements for her to move to Morris,” Geiger said.

The new director was selected out of 13 applicants for the position and four candidates who were interviewed.

David Nelson, vice chairman for the county board, said he sat in on all of the in-

terviews and that Jankiewicz will be a great addition to the county.

“Her personality really stood out to me. She’s someone that’s a go-getter and ready to come in and bring in changes,” Nelson said. “She kept using the word consistency and was excited talking about it. We need to make sure the person we’re bringing in shows consistency in bringing in policies and enforcing those policies.”

Nelson said one of the county’s biggest concerns for the position is consistency. He added the board felt Jankiewicz, who is two classes shy of earning her master’s degree in Human Resources, was one of the candidates who would stay at the county long term.

The new director also has a Professional in Human Resources certification and a Senior Professional in Human Resources certification.

“The second one is a tough certification to get. It proves you’re a well-rounded HR person,” Nelson said. “Her education mixed with [her] certifications is what we’re really excited about. She’s go-

ing to be great and I’m excited she’s on board.”

The full Grundy County Board approved at Tuesday’s meeting for Geiger to officially offer the position to Jankiewicz, but didn’t release her name to the public until Thursday because she had not yet notified her employer.

“There was a process we needed to go through to hire the new HR director and the Personnel Committee followed the procedure to a tee,” said David Welter, county board chairman. “It was good to get the name of the person selected to the pubic. She brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and has a strong education background.”

Geiger previously said the board unanimously felt Jankiewicz was a good candidate for the position.

Contact information for Jankiewicz could immediately not be obtained Thursday.

On Nov. 10, the full board officially accepted the resignation of Johnson as human resources director. She resigned because the Personnel Committee wanted a full-time director.

of 1979 froze property tax classifications at that time, making the county’s decision to convert to real property a permanent one.

“At that point we couldn’t just change back,” Pryor said.

Also, in conjunction with the act, Illinois formed the personal property replacement tax fund, which exists to replace revenues that were lost by local governments when the Legislature abolished the personal property tax.

Although Grundy County does receive some funds from the PPRT, it’s drastically less than what it would receive had machinery and equipment been classified as personal property in 1977, according to Pryor.

“Grundy County has a lower share of that fund because it’s based on how much property they had classified as personal property in 1977. They didn’t know the state was go-

ing to come up with a replacement fund,” Pryor said. “It’s a significantly less amount money, millions and millions of dollars.”

Other counties in Illinois receive income through the state’s PPRT fund to equal their share of the state’s total personal property assessment at the time of the freeze. “[Machinery and equipment] is assessed as real property at a higher percentage of its value in Grundy County than in other places in the state,” Pryor said.

The GEDC and Tax Committee will further discuss options about forming a subcommittee to find solutions to this issue at the next Tax Committee meeting.

“Our hope is that when we start to look at numbers, people will begin to understand why this is so important to the community,” said Nancy Norton Ammer, CEO of GEDC.

MORRIS – A new subcommittee might be coming to Grundy County next year to search for alternative revenues to the Machinery and Equipment Tax. Doug Pryor, vice president of the Grundy County Economic Development Council, said the GEDC will work with the county’s Tax Committee to form a subcommittee, which will include different taxing bodies such as schools and fire districts, as well as private-sector businesses.

The GEDC made a presentation to the Tax Committee during its meeting Wednesday.

“It’s not as simple as saying we know what we’re going to do when it comes to this. We need to get everyone at the ta-

ble to figure out what’s best for everybody,” Pryor said.

“Abolishing it isn’t necessarily the goal. Our goal is to be as competitive as possible and to encourage investment and jobs in the area.”

The machinery and equipment method of assessment for county property taxes is where machinery and equipment in Grundy County is assessed as real property rather than personal property.

These real property assessments were applied to all equipment which could not practicably be removed for use at another facility.

“This looks at in-line machinery and equipment with the manufacturing processes, such as towers at a chemical manufacturing facility; anything, if it were removed, the facility wouldn’t be able to

function,” Pryor said.

This taxing method has been in place in Grundy County since the 1970s and was formed in response to Illinois’ decision to eliminate personal property taxes, according to the GEDC. The tax has made attracting industry to Grundy County difficult at times. The hope of the subcommittee is to find solutions to this tax.

In the late 1970s, the county had a high reliance on its industrial tax base, especially those with high personal property values like the Exelon Dresden Generating Station and the current LyondellBasell facility.

To avoid the risk of losing a significant portion of its income, Grundy County and other local taxing bodies converted much of what was assessed as personal property to real property.

8 Coal City High School musical auditions set for next week MORRIS DAILY HERALD COAL CITY – Auditions are being held next week for the Coal City High School’s spring musical, “Beauty and the Beast.”

It’s the first time in school history the high school students will be tackling this massive show and it all starts with choosing the perfect cast to bring this story to life, according to a news release from the school. Auditions will be Monday and Tuesday with callbacks to follow on Wednesday. Auditions will be open to middle school and high school students; however, this is a high school production and it has a limited number of middle school roles.

Middle school students will have the opportunity to audition from 7 to 8:20 a.m. Monday and Tuesday in the Coal City

Middle School Community Room: high school auditions will be taking place at the high school from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Students do not need to be present the entire time.

Auditions will take place on a first come, first served basis.

Once you have completed your audition for the panel, you are free to leave. Middle school students need to prepare 30-60 seconds of a song to perform acapella, whereas the high school students have specific audition pieces they will need to prepare.
