Sub chain seeking standalone building

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Jimmy John’s is considering a move from its current location at 1541 Creek Road in Morris to a standalone building about a mile east on Bedford Road.

Ryan McGuire spoke Thursday morning to the Morris Development Review Committee on behalf of the sandwich chain about developing at 21,000-square-foot property at 515 Bedford Road.

The preliminary site plan shows a 1,650-square-foot Jimmy John’s at the north end of the lot along Bedford Road, with parking to the south and the entry and exits along both Bedford Road and Waverly Street.

The main concern of the committee was assuring safety for drivers on Bedford Road.

“My first thought is that a left turn onto Bedford would be very problematic,” Committee Chairman Brent Dite

said.

The committee mentioned the possibility of a right-turnonly exit onto Bedford Road.

McGuire agreed, and Mayor Richard Kopczick noted the Illinois Department of Transportation would have to approve the addition of an entry and exit on Waverly.

Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said with Morris Hospital nearby, the restaurant might draw a considerable amount of pedestrian customers. He mentioned adding a very visible crosswalk if, in fact, Jimmy John’s moved in.

“I’d hate to see somebody get hit,” Cheshareck said.

McGuire said the goal of the meeting was just to get a feel for what is feasible at this property.

Jimmy John’s is hoping to settle on a property choice by Jan. 10.

Morris family prepares, hands out goods to homeless throughout Illinois

MORRIS – On Sunday evening, the Eberhard family of Morris packed 20 bags filled with goods for the homeless.

This week, Jeff and Jamie Eberhard gave 10 homeless packs to Bounce Back Social Services in Plainfield, 10 to the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission in Joliet and 20 to the Will County Center for Community Concerns in Joliet.

In addition to regular chores such as doing the dishes, taking out the garbage and cleaning their rooms, kids MaKenzi, 16, Geno, 12, Luchiano, 8, Gunnar, 6, and Sly, 4, are helping to put the packs together.

They all say it’s fun and that it’s also important to them.

“We do it because people don’t have food or houses,” Sly said.

Projects for helping the homeless started at Jeff Eberhard’s car lot, EZ Auto Sales in Joliet, between 2006 and 2008, when the economic recession hit. Around 10 to 15 people were hanging out near the lot on a regular basis. He and his staff sometimes handed out food and drink, and it grew from there.

“We started making the packs these last couple years,” Jeff said. “We’ve handed them out in St. Louis, Chicago, Springfield, Joliet and Morris, etc. It’s escalated.”

The packs include deodorant, wet wipes, cotton swabs, a toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, tissues, two pairs of socks, hand warmers, gloves, a winter hat and a day’s worth of food, which varies depending on availability. The latest batch had Propel water, juice boxes, Craisins and Heater Meals – precooked meals that come with a water-activated heater.

The family looks for sales on goods to save money and a few friends have contributed to the inventory, as well.

“So many people we meet are not drug addicts or alcoholics,” Jeff said.

The Eberhards like to hear a little bit of a person’s story when they hand out packs. They often find people either made a few bad choices or hit a string of bad luck in a short amount of time. All of the sudden, a person can lose their residence, meaningful friendships and, perhaps most importantly, family.

Morris students learn a lesson in giving

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Students at Nettle Creek School in Morris are learning more than reading, writing and arithmetic this holiday season.

E r i c a D o e r f l e r , a s e cond-grade teacher at the school, had an idea to teach students about giving that worked out even better than she had anticipated.

“Usually every year, we have a secret Santa, and students give gifts to each other. I thought giving to others would be better than the students each receiving a $5 toy,” Doerfler said. “I asked the other teachers if this is something they were interested in doing, and they all agreed.”

The eight students in Doerfler’s class were joined by students in kindergarten through fourth grade in collecting toys to donate to those in need.

They partnered with the Grundy County Environmental & Resource Conservation Office to make Christmas presents a reality for more children.

Use office turned into Santa’s workshop again this year, collecting gently-used toys, books and DVDs and getting them to agencies that will distribute them to underprivileged children.

Aanya Patel, a student in Doerfler’s class, said she brought in a doll and a whale, along with new items her family purchased for donation.

“There is nothing left in my toy bin,” she said.

She, like her classmates, was happy to donate toys she doesn’t play with anymore, along with new items, so less-fortunate kids can have something new under the tree.

Austin delaHera said he brought in stuffed animals, toys and books.

“I still have a lot of toys at my house,” he said.

Dominic Satori said he’d be sad if he didn’t have a gift at Christmas so he was glad other kids will now be happy.

The children made a list of things that can be donated in addition to toys as they thought about giving this season.

The list included CDs, clothes, food, water, coats and hats, and Charlie Voss even suggested a Christmas tree.

Rex Dunlap and Zachary Zabel said they stood outside Wal-Mart this year and collected food with their Boy Scout troop in order to donate it to We Care of Grundy County.

Noemi Trejo said people should adopt a family and help them get clothes and shoes.

As the school continues celebrating its annual random acts of kindness and season of giving, the students continue to come up with ideas on how they can help their community – the lesson their teacher hoped they would learn.

First Presbyterian Church of Morris hosts Cantata with music, monologues

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Christmas Cantata has a long-standing place at First Presbyterian Church because it has been performed there for decades.

This year delivers familiar tidings as the choir prepares to perform “A Noel Celebration” on Saturday and Sunday.

“I’ve been involved every year since I was in the fourth grade,” Choral Director Kim Struck said Wednesday night after practice. “Delight Belt did them before me, and I’ve just kept the tradition going.”

She said it’s a unique way to give back to not only the congregation, but also the community.

Although the group traditionally performs a musical Cantata with a narrator, this year members have included six monologues by actors portraying people who were important in Jesus’ life.

Jay and Cheryl Roth have been rehearsing performances with Struck to bring the presentation to life.

Dave Duggins, who plays Joseph, said the performance brings a realness to the story of Christ’s birth.

“I talk about my life as Joseph, and Jesus’ life,” he said.

“I feel the emotions as I speak.”

She said she credits some of her performance with being a mother herself, which helps her identify with Mary.

“In my monologue, I discuss the fact that Mary was in a difficult position, but she was told she had no reason to fear,” Murray said. “She kept telling herself not to be afraid.”

In addition to Mary and Joseph, there will be monologues from Zechariah, John the Baptist’s father, Simeon, a shepherd, and a wise man.

Each will discuss their relationship to Jesus and reflect on the night he was born in a manger. In between each monologue, guests will hear traditional music such as “Sing Noel” and “What Child is This.”

Remembrance of veterans to take place at Abraham Lincoln cemetery

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – The sacrifices of the veterans buried in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will be remembered Saturday with the cemetery’s annual Wreaths Across America event.

As part of the undertaking, volunteers will lay wreaths on the grave markers of those who served.

Care packages have turned around the lives of at least one person in need • HOMELESS

But the family agrees handing out the packs brings a light to the darkness.

“I like to see them smile when we hand out the packs,” Luchiano said.

Jeff recently took issue with a store that banned homeless people from entering. He said several stores use similar, disrespectful policies.

“First of all, how do they know someone is homeless?” he said. “Second, many homeless are military veterans.”

According to U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates, veterans made up anywhere from 11 to 16 percent of the homeless population from 2009 to 2014.

Jeff said the number of homeless near his car lot has dropped for a couple reasons.

One of them is legislation

against vagrancy or loitering.

The other is that he, his family and others have found them help.

Several have ended up working for him.

“They are people with hearts and souls, too,” Jeff said.

One person he came into contact with didn’t want money – he just wanted a job and a place to stay. Jeff put him in a hotel.

“He ended up working for me,” Jeff said. “It took him a while to get his confidence back. He was scared to walk into 7-Eleven because he, like many homeless people, are used to not being welcomed in stores.”

All the kids recently chose making homeless packs one night when they were on vacation, rather than a swim in the hotel pool.

“When we hand them out, [homeless people’s] eyes light up,” Jeff said. “We don’t care where or when. We keep the packs in our cars.”

Legendary AP correspondent Barry Schweiddies at age 83

By HARRY DUNPHY The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Barry Schweid, the legendary Associated Press diplomatic correspondent who reported and analyzed events from dozens of countries over a career spanning 56 years, died Thursday at 83.

Schweid died at home from complications of a degenerative neurological condition.

Among his career highlights, he traveled with Henry Kissinger on the secretary of state’s “shuttle diplomacy” flights and covered the difficult negotiations at Camp David that President Jimmy Carter brokered to reach a historic peace treaty in 1977 between Egypt’s Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Menachem Begin.

As a reporter, he was known for taking serious, complex situations, especially in the Middle East, and explaining them in simple, direct terms, weaving in context and color.

There also was a lighter side.

He often injected wry quips when interviewing officials.

And on long trips he sometimes relieved colleagues of their money playing liars’ poker.

NBA Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes, 87, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes, a 12time All-Star who refined the big man’s role in the infancy of the National Basketball Association, has died.

He was 87.

Schayes was diagnosed with terminal cancer six months ago and died Thursday after being stricken with a severe infection, his son Danny Schayes said.

Dolph Schayes was the franchise player for the old Syracuse Nationals from 1948-1963 and was voted one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. He revolutionized the post position, always in perpetual motion instead of just planting himself in the paint.

As a 16-year-old freshman center, Schayes led New York University to the NCAA Final Four. He played his entire 16-season career with the Syracuse franchise, scoring 18,438 points and snaring 11,256 rebounds from 1949-64.

The 6-foot-8 Schayes was a seminal figure in the game.

With a deadly two-handed, high-arcing set shot that he stubbornly used well into the era of the jump shot, he helped redefine the big man in the NBA.

“Dolph Schayes was one of the most influential figures in NBA history,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “He helped the NBA grow from its earliest days, emerging as one of the game’s first stars and displaying the kind of passion for competition and commitment to excellence that has come to define our league.”

Schayes grew up in the Bronx during the Great Depression and delivered laundry for cash. He honed his game in the schoolyards of Junior High 79 and DeWitt Clinton High School.

“When we played basketball I did everything. I passed, I dribbled, I played outside,” said Schayes, who was 6-5 at age 11.

The New York Knicks chose Schayes fourth in the 1948 Basketball Association of America draft and the Tri-Cities Blackhawks picked him first in the National Basketball League before trading his rights to Syracuse.

After winning NBA rookie of the year honors in 1949, Schayes led the Nationals in scoring for 12 straight seasons and helped lead the team to its lone NBA title in 1955, becoming the first player in NBA history to score 15,000 points.

Minooka wrestlers pitch rare shutout

By JEFF DeGRAW Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – In a Southwest Prairie Conference wrestling match-up between Minooka and Romeoville, it was all Minooka Tuesday night.

The Indians recorded eight pins on the way to a 75-0 win.

“We are a very young team on the mat, dominated by freshmen and sophomores,” Minooka coach Bernie Ruettiger said. “We have put this team through the meat grinder with our schedule so far. If you mention a good team in Illinois high school wrestling, we have probably wrestled them.

“Tonight shows these kids that the schedule they have prepares them. We respect everyone and I know Romeoville is young like we are.

None of this would be possible without the excellent coaching staff that we have at Minooka. The assistants are such a big part of everything we do.”

The match started at 160 pounds and the Indians’ Tyler Haase got things rolling with a second-period pin.

Senior Kenny Kirkland, wrestling at 170, recorded a 22-second pin over the Spartans’ Fabian Mariscal.

Kirkland will drop back to 160 when senior Carson Oughton returns to the lineup.

Oughton is ranked third in Class 3A in the state, according to Illinios Matmen’s GEI rankings.

Ruettinger hopes to have Oughton back in January.

Kirkland was also wrestling in his first match after recovering from an injury.

“It was good to get back out there,” he said. “We have a young team this year with

With Ramos leading, 5-4, going to the third period, Ruettiger tied it at 5 and again at 7 before heading to overtime.

Then with a takedown in overtime Ruettiger won, 9-7.

Offense working to avoid penalties

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – When Jay Cutler and Adam Gase look back at the struggles on offense exhibited in Sunday’s loss to the 49ers, the penalties are hard to ignore.

“I felt like if we eliminate the penalties and clean some of the details up, we’re headed in the right direction,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase said following Thursday’s practice.

Cutler said penalties hurt drives that got into 49ers territory, but didn’t result in enough points. Gase pointed out that a holding penalty kept Matt Forte from an explosive

run.

Of the Bears’ eight penalties, six came on offense, including four holding penalties.

The Bears lead the league with 28 accepted flags for holding on the season.

Kyle Long explained on Monday that the 49ers presented a unique challenge by being a “butt-and-press team, a twogap team,” and they also knew that last week’s officiating crew was prone to throwing flags for holding.

A 3-4 unit like San Francisco, Washington will test the Bears’ discipline on Sunday, and Gase discussed the difficulty in working on it during the week.

Beware of the backlash With growing numbers of black and Latino politicians calling for Cook County State’s Attorney Alvarez to resign, it’s probably time for the county’s Democratic Party leaders to rethink their summertime decision not to endorse anyone in the primary.

The incumbent state’s attorney is facing two Democratic primary challengers, Kim Foxx and Donna More.

Foxx, an African-American woman and former prosecutor, is the former chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and is backed by other African-American and liberal leaders, plus some labor unions.

More is white, is a former county prosecutor and has represented casino interests since she left the Illinois Gaming Board decades ago. She also contributed to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign (one of only a handful of contributions she’s ever made). The first-time candidate has demonstrated an ability to raise enough money to compete.

The general rule of thumb for incumbents facing primaries is “the more, the merrier.” Multiple candidates can split the “anti” vote against the incumbent, which means Alvarez won’t need to receive 50 percent plus one to win. In other words, she could win.

When the state’s lone Latino in the U.S. Congress, Luiz Gutierrez, withdrew his Alvarez endorsement and other major Cook County Latino figures called on her to resign, the pressure built to a full-on boil.

But as we’ve seen elsewhere, a racial backlash could easily develop in this contest.

Racial politics are a hard fact

VIEWS Rich Miller of life in Cook County (as they are most places), so what follows may seem insensitive, but it’s not meant to be at all.

The hard fact is that suburban Cook County just isn’t as racially diverse or as liberal as Chicago. It was just 24 percent African-American and 25 percent Latino in the last census, compared with 32 percent white in the city.

The suburbs have quite a lot of people who fled Chicago or who refuse to live there.

The question has to be asked: What if Alvarez actually wins the nomination as a pro-police, law-and-order candidate? The uproar from the Democratic base would be deafening, and the consequences in the state’s largest and most important Democratic county might be substantial.

On the other hand, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Chicago Ald. Ed Burke support Alvarez. Those two have a lot of sway in Cook County, so as long as they are with the incumbent, the party likely won’t back anyone else.

The Democratic Party showed it could adapt when it stripped Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown of her slating because of a federal investigation and then handed it to one of her opponents.

The same sort of rethinking should be done with the Alvarez contest.

Substance, not rhetoric, for president Being president of the United States is a job for an adult.

It requires leadership, a sharp understanding of all things foreign and domestic, a desire to foster relationships, the ability to solve problems, being able to work well with others and the willingness to compromise for the good of the American people.

Yet, the candidate leading the Republican side of the race for president hasn’t demonstrated any of these qualities during his campaign.

It seems the more outrageous that Donald Trump acts, the more support he garners.

On Monday, Trump called “for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can

figure out what is going on.”

Before that, Trump talked about requiring all Muslims to register as part of a national database and about closing mosques he said preach hate.

Someone get this man a copy of the First Amendment.

During his campaign for president, he also has insulted the looks of fellow candidates, accused Mexico of sending its rapists to America, and demonstrated a clear lack of the maturity needed to be this nation’s leader.

Enough is enough. This isn’t about whether you are conservative or liberal. This isn’t about far-left and farright policies. It’s not about the establishment and anti-establishment. This is about taking seriously the process of choosing the next president of the United States.

In fairness to Trump, po-

litical newcomer Ben Carson, also a Republican candidate for president, has made disparaging remarks about Muslims (“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation”) and Syrian refugees (“If there’s a rabid dog running around in your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog”).

It’s time Americans start paying attention to substance, not fiery rhetoric. The Iowa caucuses are fewer than two months away. Illinois’ primary is in March.

A lot can happen between now and then, but what must happen is the American people start looking at the issues, learn about the candidates and then vote for qualified adults when your primary election rolls around.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Victor Mollo, who was born in Russia but lived most of his life in London, wrote many stories about bridge-playing fauna. Mollo died in 1987, but some years later, a cache of unpublished articles was found, enough for four books. The final collection, “Last Call in the Menagerie” (Master Point Press), appeared earlier this year.

All of these books feature unusual deals with some instructive elements and humorous narrative. The main character is the acerbic Hideous Hog, who knows how to get the best out of his partners and worst out of his opponents. In this deal, the Hog sat North, and his partner was the Rueful Rabbit, a very weak player who was born under a lucky star.

In this rubber-bridge deal, the Rabbit ended in five hearts. How did he plan the play after West led the spade king?

The Hog had carefully hidden his spade ace between the four and five.

He was worried that East would be void in spades and did not want the Rabbit to waste the ace.

So, West took the first trick and continued with the spade queen.

Then, as the Rabbit pulled the four into the middle of the table, the ace jutted out.

The Rabbit ruffed, cashed his heart ace, played a heart to the queen, discarded a club on the spade ace, ruffed the third round of clubs in his hand, returned to the dummy with a trump, and discarded a diamond on the club eight – the only way to make the contract.
