Born July 3, 1940, in Harlan County, Kentucky, to the late Caleb and Berlin (nee Saylor) Blanton, Sr. Veteran of the United States Navy. Retired from Ironworkers Local #444 in Joliet.

Caleb loved spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed traveling with his late wife, Donna, whom he married June 14, 1964, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Surviving are three children, Caleb Z. Blanton, III of Everett, WA, Angela Blanton of Kankakee, IL and Amy (David) Lardi of Coal City; five grandchildren, Christian Dawson, Jerrica (Ryan) Sennott, Joshua (Kristina) Lardi, Joel (Rhea Drou-

DUANE B. DIBBLE Born: May 31, 1923; in Joliet, IL Died: Dec. 9, 2014; in Morris, IL Duane B. Dibble, age 91, formerly of Dwight, passed away peacefully, December 9, 2014, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehab in Morris.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at Hager Memorial Home in Dwight. There will be a graveside service at 2:00 p.m., at Woodlawn Cemetery in Joliet. Rev. Debora Percell will officiate.

Duane was born in Joliet, on May 31, 1923, to Duane Dibble and Edith Bailey Dibble. He married Ruth Margaret Titus on September 1, 1945, in Wheaton, Illinois. Duane is survived by his daughters, Diane (Kent) Borger, Gail (Owen, deceased) Stuckey, and Sharon Dibble; son, Edmond Dibble; sister, Kathleen Johnson; grandchildren, Kristi Borger, Adam (Boni) Borger, Marcus (Susie) Stuckey, Jennifer Dibble, Duane Dibble and Edmund Dibble; and two great-grandsons, Remington Null and Xun Borger.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth Margaret; son, Gary Duane; his son-in-law, Owen; grand-daughter, Michelle Grogg; and his brother, Ronald Dibble.

Duane was affiliated with the Methodist church. He was a farmer and a truck driver.

Memorials can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in honor of Duane Dibble.

CORRECTIONS In the article “Technology Committee approves GIS data sharing for nonprofits agreement” that was on page 4 of the Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, edition of the Morris Daily Herald, the number of parcels in Grundy County was incorrect. There are about 26,000 parcels in the county. Also, the article should have stated nonprofits do not have to perform a specific project for Grundy

“The bathrooms and showers are the number one priority,” he said. “Good food and good service are next. Those four things are the top of the list when I’m deciding which truck stop I want to go to.”

It came as no surprise to Page when he found out Travel Center of America’s R-Place truck stop in Morris made a top 10 list of best rest stops in the United States on mentalfloss.com.

He was surprised it wasn’t higher than number five though.

He stops at R-Place as often as he can and is glad to see that, while the food and service remain homey, the pumps have been modernized and the parking lot expanded.

“I love the down-home feel and the ambience,” Page said.

“I can get run-of-the-mill menu items anywhere. The service is good and fast and the servers are talkative and nice.”

Kathy Romines opened the eatery 47 years ago as the Chuck Wagon and changed it in 1987 when the restaurant expanded from 100 to 250 seats.

“We are very family-oriented,” Romines said. “Our food is phenomenal and a lot of truck drivers mention they come for the food.”

She said locals make up a good portion of the business and she keeps them guessing when it comes to what theme they will see next when they come in the door.

The restaurant is filled with antiques and it takes sev-

eral trips to see everything displayed there, Romines said. As soon as people think they’ve seen it all, the atmosphere and theme changes.

When she first designed the interior, she thought she would search out antiques to fill the place. But after her first shopping trip, she realized it was a much bigger task than she had time to do while running the business and keeping the menu updated.

She went to a trade show in Chicago and a large letter R called her to the back of the room, where she met the people from Biggar Antiques in Georgia, which specializes in antiques, props and restaurant decor. She hired them and leases the items that change with the season.

It wasn’t just the decor Romines thought needed to stay up-to-date to remain a destination for travelers rolling down

Interstate 80. She knew she had to keep current with the food as well. The days of the Chuck, Wagon’s limited menu of roast beef, fried chicken or a hamburger were gone, just like the 10-cent coffee they served.

In 1987, when she expanded the restaurant, she also expanded the menu. She did so by going out to eat at different restaurants throughout the Chicago area and bringing the ideas back to Morris.

“We started saving time as the Internet grew, and we could research food ideas online,” she said. “We had new specials, new things and new drinks, but we kept the comfort food. We offered a trucker’s special, which would be one main dish like lasagna or casserole. It was cheap and a lot of food.”

Greg Lefler, an over the road truck driver who runs out of Phoenix, has family in Pontiac, so he likes to make the trip north often. When he does, he said he stops at R-Place.

“The food is awesome. It’s different than a lot of places,” he said after finishing his pot pie. “It’s obviously not just my opinion if they got number five on the list.”

He said he also likes that it’s often times the same server waiting on him each time he comes through.

Locals react to the death of Topinka

By MATTHEW HENDRICKSON mhendrickson@shawmedia.com Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka died early Wednesday of complications from a stroke suffered Tuesday, according to spokesman Brad Hahn.

Topinka was 70 years old.

Topinka, of Riverside, served as state comptroller for four years and was re-elected in November for a second fouryear term.

Topinka went to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn on Tuesday morning after feeling discomfort, according to a news release from her office. She underwent testing for a possible stroke and was under observation Wednesday morning when she lost consciousness.

She was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.

Topinka held a long and storied career as an Illinois politician.

She served as state treasur-

He recalled Topinka remained approachable as an elected official – remaining a regular presence at neighborhood estate, and garage sales while clutching a cup of coffee.

Bojovic later served as a coordinator for Topinka’s 2006 campaign when he moved to Grundy County.

Board gives official OK for bond refinancing

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With official approval by the full Grundy County Board, the county can pay down some of its debt from bonds issued in 2008.

Members of the Finance Committee previously approved an amendment to a resolution that requires referendum approval for county projects using Public Building Commission bond financing.

The amendment allows the county to refinance bonds and

was approved by the full county board Tuesday.

The approval will allow the county to make a one-time payment of $1.65 million and will reduce the county’s interest payments by $1.3 million, said John Galloway, chairman of the Finance Committee.

“This is going to reduce the life of the bond by two years. I view it as a good thing,” Galloway said at the board meeting. “The future County Board needs to make sure they don’t take that additional money for bonds and spend it. We’re paying a lot of debt.”

County Board Chairman David Welter said the amendment will help reduce balloon payments.

Even with a unanimous vote for the amendment, board member Frank Halpin had his doubts about the bond repayment.

“It seems ironic to go out for $3.6 million less than 15 months ago and now we’re going to take out $1.6 million,” Halpin said at the meeting.

“How do we view that as helping taxpayers today?”

Halpin is referring to bonds taken out in the summer of

2013 to continue the county’s self-insurance program, so it can provide its own liability and worker’s compensation insurance.

Bonds issued in 2008 were used for various county projects, such as the construction

of a facility for the Highway Department, renovations to the Grundy County Courthouse, construction of a new facility for the Animal Control Department, the construction of a parking lot and a new 911 center.

“The future County Board needs to make sure they don’t take that additional money for bonds and spend it. We’re paying a lot of debt.”

“In the 47 years we’ve been here, we’ve only had four general managers. Our current manager Carrie [Coughlin] is

the first woman general manager and she is doing a great job,” Romines said.

Coughlin moved her way up from managing the restaurant’s bakery to being the general manager.

Saratoga School character program recognizes students MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Saratoga School in Morris has started a character program. Each month focuses on a new trait the students learn about and try to demonstrate.

The school year was kicked off with a song and video made by some of the school’s teachers.

At the end of each month there is an all-school assembly to recognize two students from each grade level who have demonstrated that month’s trait.

Each homeroom also has a winner the teacher recognizes in their classroom, according to a news release from the school.

Topinka unquestionably dedicated to public service Before she was a politician, Judy Baar Topinka was an award-winning journalist.

Topinka, 70, died early Wednesday, less than a day after she suffered a stroke. She was the first woman in Illinois to serve in two state constitutional offices. She had just won re-election in November as state comptroller.

Topinka served the public as a journalist before devoting her life to public service as an elected official.

She attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and graduated in 1966. After graduation she worked part time for the Berwyn, Cicero and Stickney-Forest View Life Newspapers before being hired full time in 1971. In her journalism career, Topinka was a reporter, education editor, feature writer, feature editor and photographer. She won awards from the Illinois Women’s Press Association, the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois State Medical Society.

Topinka, a Republican, morphed into one of the most outspoken politicians in Illinois and was a trailblazer for women in politics.

“She was a professional public servant,” said state Sen. Pamela Althoff, R-McHenry. “From the perspective of the Republican Party, she was a woman that spoke her mind, said what everyone wanted to say but was too afraid to say. It’s a significant loss, and we will miss her.”

Topinka, a lifelong Riverside resident, won election to the Illinois House in 1980. She moved to the state Senate in 1984. Ten years later, she was elected to the first of her three terms as state treasurer. In 2006, she unsuccessfully ran against Rod Blagojevich for Illinois governor. She returned to public office in 2010, when she was elected state comptroller.

During her gubernatorial bid in 2006, Topinka described Illinois as “a miraculously wonderful place to live.” But she also believed it was being hurt and abused by those in office, which is why she decided to run for governor.

“If I don’t stop it, I’d be complicit in watching it go down the tubes, and I don’t want to do that,” Topinka said.

In every stop along the way, Topinka had one thing in mind: Making Illinois a great place to live. Her style might have been considered unorthodox. Her personality might have been off-putting to some. But her dedication to Illinois and public service can’t be questioned.

Help for pregnant students “How can a scared, pregnant student, one probably racked with anxiety and facing a totally unplanned situation, find the resources and support she needs to parent her child and continue her education?”

Kristan Hawkins both asks and answers the question. She’s the energetic young president of Students for Life of America. In her mind, abortion needs to be unthinkable. How does such a paradigm shift happen in a country where abortion has been legal for more than four decades?

Her group has just launched a “Pregnant on Campus” initiative.

The goal is to connect pregnant students with resources and support to help them get through school while being true parents to their children.

From her near-decade’s work with college students, Hawkins knows that there are existing resources on many campuses, but the students who need to know about them often don’t.

“By educating pregnant students and those who care about

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez them ... about the many resources they can use, a huge burden can be lifted from their shoulders,” Hawkins explains. “They can start to prepare for the future and finish their education.”

Pregnant on Campus groups will hold baby showers and diaper drives for expectant mothers on their campuses. They volunteer at local pregnancy help centers and help usher pregnant women through paperwork and bureaucracy. “This is one of the best programs we have ever started,” Hawkins asserts, “because it helps pregnant students in very tangible and practical ways and shows the college campus that the pro-life movement is very much pro-woman.”

A young woman “should never have to choose between her education and her child,” Hawkins tells me. But that’s absolutely the

predominant message a pregnant college student hears. “Often, the message she sees is ‘have an abortion or drop out of school.’ ” It’s a false choice. “For her and her child’s future and well-being, our goal should be to make sure she graduates school,” Hawkins says, adding that “a child born into poverty is seven times more likely to live in poverty his or her whole life.”

If people see that going to college and raising a child is doable, life happens and death ceases.

No young woman should have to choose to deny her motherhood, deny her child life. She doesn’t have to. She needs to see this. This is true both on and off campus.

SPORTS STAGING A RALLY FOR THE AGES Redskins erase 13-point deficit in fourth to trip Yorkville girls hoops VIEWS Rob Oesterle MORRIS – For fans of lategame comebacks, the Morris girls basketball team’s 54-52 win Tuesday over Yorkville was made just for you.

This one had it all, and then some. I mean, how often do you see a player that has fouled out make the winning shot? Confused? Keep reading.

First of all, the Redskins had to rally from a 13-point deficit early in the fourth quarter. They entered the period trailing 46-38, but Yorkville scored the first five points of the period on a basket and 3-pointer, seemingly setting the previously unbeaten Foxes on their way to another victory.

Even when Julie Jurasits converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:26 to play that pulled Morris to within 10, most Redskin fans would have been content with making the game close. But then, because of some tight Morris defense, Yorkville wasn’t able to score again.

And Morris started to.

Leona Burton made a shot with 3:24 left to make it, 51-43, and Mya Shannon dribbled down the lane for a bucket with 2:31 left. Burton was called for a foul on the defensive end, which was her fifth, and she went to the bench.

More on that later.

With 48.3 seconds left, Shannon made a 3-pointer to cut the Yorkville lead to, 51-48. After a Morris timeout, Yorkville tried a long pass down the court, but it sailed over the intended player’s head and went out of bounds, giving Morris the ball.

However, there was confusion at the scorers’ table, and it was ruled it was only Nolan’s fourth foul and she could stay in the game.

Also, during the officials’ meeting at the table, Morris coach Kate Carey came over said she thought Burton’s fifth

foul was actually called on Rylie Harr. The officials discussed that and agreed with her, allowing Burton to come back in the game.

After that, Jurak made one of her three free throws to make it, 52-51. Yorkville’s Macciomei was fouled and missed both free throws.

Shannon rebounded and brought the ball up the court and found Burton on the right

wing. Burton then banked in a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left and, all that was missing was Al Michaels asking if you believed in miracles.

“That was amazing,” Burton said about going from being fouled out to making the game-winning shot. “I was scared when they told me I fouled out that I wasn’t going to be able to help the team, so it was awesome that I got to go

back in and make the last shot.”

Now, after going winless in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East the past two seasons, Morris owns a 2-0 record in league play with wins over Kaneland and Yorkville.

For Carey, it’s a heck of a lot better to see the zero on the right-hand side of the record than the left.

Meghan Smith did a good job on defense, too. Their big girl [Nolan, who finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds] was tough, and she did a lot of damage in the first half. But Meghan did a good job on her when she was in there.

“We put a little more pressure on them in the second half with our defense, and that forced them to panic a little bit and turn it over a

few times. Then, we were able to take advantage with our offense and cut into their lead.”

And that set the stage for some of the wildest final minutes of a basketball game you will ever see.

GARDNER – Racing out to a 22-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Gardner-South Wilmington boys basketball team dominated from the start Tuesday in a 73-27 win over Trinity Academy.

Kyle Robison led the Panthers with 18 points in just 11 minutes of playing time, including an 8 of 9 performance from the free-throw line. Blake Marks scored 10 points, while Brendan Elens added eight.

All but three members of the GSW team scored.

“We got a chance to work on some things in this game,” GSW coach Chris Gibson said.

“We rebounded well and shot well again on our home floor.

“We were able to rest some people up for a very big conference game Friday at Grant Park.”

Falcons, Bears much alike, but so different Sutton learning how to handle final stretch

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The drive from Green Bay to Chicago is pleasant enough, just about three hours and short enough to go nonstop, but long enough to let your mind wander to what might have been, or perhaps should be.

I was there Monday night for the Packers vs. Falcons game and, as I replayed it in my mind in the car, I was struck by the strange similarities and huge differences between the Falcons and the Bears.

Remember when they met in Week 6 and the Bears had their only quality 60-minute performance of the year, handing the Falcons a convincing 27-13 defeat?

That was when fans still hoped the Bears were moving in the right direction.

Where are these two clubs now?

Both teams have $100 million quarterbacks in Matt Ryan and Jay Cutler. One of the great debates to begin this season was over which was the best pair of starting wideouts in the NFL, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery or Julio Jones and Roddy White.

The Bears get a clear edge at running back with Matt Forte over Steven Jackson and at tight end with Martellus Bennett over Levine Toilolo. Both offensive lines are banged up, although the Falcons much more so than the

For some Bears veterans who have been on losing teams, this is not unfamiliar territory to get eliminated from playoff contention with three weeks to go.

For the 16 rookies currently on the Bears’ 53-man roster, this is another learning experience to life as a pro.

Third-round defensive tackle Will Sutton remembers the last time he was on a losing team, his freshman year at Arizona State, when the Sun Devils went 4-8. Sutton described what he can take from that season with the Bears at 5-8. “[For some players], it’s hard to keep going knowing that your season is done after your last game, but if you want to be the best, if you want to be one of the best, you can’t look at it that way,” he said. “You’ve got to look at it and say, ‘we’ve still got a

game this week. We’ve got to go out there and compete. We don’t want to go out there and get embarrassed,’ so got to play with pride.”

Sutton has seen extra snaps because of Jeremiah Ratliff’s knee injury. Ratliff has missed five games and this season, and Sutton has played in 48.7 percent of defensive snaps. Even when Ratliff is healthy, Sutton is sure to keep getting opportunities in the final three games.

“There’s always room for improvement,” he said. “So far, I don’t want to say satisfied, but I feel like, coming in, looking back, I felt like I’ve done my role, done what I’ve been coached to do. Three more weeks left, I feel like I can get better in the next three weeks.”

Sutton said he is always learning from Ratliff, along with defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni – “He’s

going to coach his [butt] off. He’s not going to let us slack.”

Bears coach Marc Trestman has continued to emphasize his one-week-seasons approach to keep his players focused on the task ahead. He said it’s on some of those veterans to show the rookies the professionalism to handle this last stretch of a disappointing season.

“We expect the guys that have been around to lead the way in that regard. I think they’re doing that,” he said. “And to show them what it is to be a professional on a daily basis, not just when things are going your way, but when they’re not.”

Sutton has 21 tackles, two for a loss and two passes defensed in his 13 games.

On defense, the Falcons figured to struggle. The Bears were supposed to be improved.

Yet both groups have struggled mightily. Both defensive lines are populated with overpriced, under-performing veterans. Both teams have athletes rather than football players at linebacker, and the Falcons are a little better in the secondary with first-round picks William Moore and Desmond Trufant.

Each is a 5-8 team, although the Falcons are in first place in the woeful NFC South while the Bears are in the basement

of the much stronger NFC North.

Are the Falcons a much different 5-8 than the Bears?

When the Bears went to Lambeau in Week 9, they basically failed to show up. They fell behind, 14-0, in the first half and then gave up 28 more points in a comical second quarter to trail 42-0 at the half.

It left the Packers laughing at them on the sideline.

Rather than come back and fight, the Bears mailed in the second half, scoring only on a fluky 45-yard pass from Cutler to Marshall halfway through the third quarter, and a 101yard kickoff return from Chris

Williams in the fourth quarter after the Packers had made the score 55-7.

The Falcons struggled similarly to the Bears early Monday night, falling behind, 31-7, at the half after Green Bay scored on every possession it had in the half.

But, unlike the Bears, the Falcons chose to come out and fight in the second half, closing the score to 43-37 with 2:11 remaining and still in possession of all three timeouts.

Atlanta was one defensive stop away from getting the ball back with about 1:50 to play and a chance to win.

Falcons coach Mike Smith is rumored to be in serious jeopardy of losing his job mainly because of serious lapses in game management, even though he is the most successful coach in Falcons history and they were the No. 1 seed in the NFC in 2010 and 2012.

Yet in Lambeau, one team competed and one didn’t, and the Falcons were so much better coached than the Bears it’s beyond comparison.

Right now, the Falcons are a far superior 5-8 team than the Bears, and folks might not be laughing if they win a home playoff game. The club that showed up in the second half in Green Bay just might.

And the Bears appear to be resisting change why?

Keeping your neck in neutral position should elminate pain Dear Doctor K: I’m a woman in my late 40s, and I have mild but aggravating neck pain that flares up from time to time.

Can you suggest simple changes I can make at home and at work that might help?

Dear Reader: There are many things you can do to minimize your risk of recurring neck pain.

Start by keeping your neck in a neutral position whether you are sitting or standing.

That means your head should balance directly over your spine and not lean forward or be cocked to one side.

Here are some more tips: • At the computer or desk, keep your head balanced directly over your spine as

Set your chair height so both your feet can rest on the ground, and sit with your buttocks far back in your chair, using a small pillow to support your lower back if needed.

That’s what I’m doing as I write this column at my desk at home. But it wasn’t always that way.

Until recently, when I worked at home, I used my lightweight computer with its small screen. That small screen, plus my aging eyes,

caused me to bend forward a lot to read what was on the screen.

When I told my wife that my neck was hurting, she said: “I think it’s because you don’t use a big flat screen at home like you do at work.

You’re hunched over a lot.”

Bingo! I got a good-sized home flat screen. The screen sits directly in front of me so that I can see it without tilting my head down or back. No more neck pain.

Also, when you’re working at your computer or doing any type of desk work, get up and move around every half-hour.

• When using a telephone,

a headset, earbuds or speakerphone are good options to help keep your head in a neutral position for handsfree talking. Headsets are available for both your desk phone and cellphone.

• If you are sitting in a chair while reading, maintain an upright posture. Hold the book so you don’t have to lean down or forward to see it.

• Avoid wearing high heels, which change the alignment of your entire body and stress neck muscles.

• Choose a lightweight purse or backpack, and don’t overload it. Use a backpack designed to put weight on your hips instead of just your upper back, and don’t sling it over one shoulder. With

heavier loads, use a wheeled pack or briefcase. If you must use a shoulder purse, alternate which shoulder you use.

• If you drive long distances, periodic breaks can help to reduce or prevent neck strain.

• Sit far enough from a TV or movie screen that you can watch without tilting your head back. Don’t sit off to the side, which forces you to turn your neck for long periods.

If you follow these simple suggestions, your neck pain should be considerably reduced, or even disappear.
