Grundy primaries

MORRIS – Monday was the last day those who wished to be candidates in the March 2016 primary election could file their names with the Grundy County Clerk’s Office.

15 people filed for the nine open seats on the Grundy County Board. Three seats are open in each district. There can be three Democrat and three Republican candidates in each district for the General Election next November, so the only contested races for the primary are for the Republican choices in District 1 and Democratic candidates in District 3. County Board Chairman David Welter sent out a news release Monday afternoon announcing he would not seek re-election to represent District 1. His term ends December 2016.

“When my term ends, I will have served a total of six years on the board, with two years as vice chairman and the past two years as chairman,” Welter said in the release. “I ran for the County Board because I saw the opportunity to bring a fresh approach to local government at the county level, and because I believed I could positively impact the county while also providing long-run savings for taxpayers.

“While I know that Grundy County will continue to face challenges in the future, I feel confident that I have made a positive impact and I look forward to spending the final year of my term to do all I can to serve the county and make the transition to new leadership as seamless as possible.”

In District 1, Morris residents Carter Corsello, Don Hansen and incumbents Vicki Geiger and John B. Roth III filed as Republican candidates.

In District 2, Lana Phillips of Morris and Jackie McKinney of Minooka filed as Democratic candidates while Mireya Martin of Minooka and incumbents

Debra Jo Kinsella of Minooka and Eric Rasmusson of Morris filed as a Republican candidates.

In District 3, incumbents Frank Halpin Jr. of Gardner and Ann Gill of Coal City and non-incumbents James Riley of Gardner and Jim Ryan of Morris filed as Democrat candidates while incumbent Harold Vota of Coal City and non-incumbents Brian Severson of Dwight and Mashale Castelli of South Wilmington filed as Republican candidates.

For countywide offices, Elizabeth A. Johnson of Morris and Brooke Shupe of Frankfort filed as Democrats in hopes of taking over the position of incumbent Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland, who was the only Republican candidate to file.

In August, Grundy County Circuit Clerk Karen Slattery announced she would not run for re-election. Current Deputy Circuit Clerk Karen Broncato of Coal City and Corri Trotter of Morris filed as Republicans.

Joan Harrop of Morris filed as the only Democrat candidate.

For the position of coroner, incumbent John Callahan filed as the only Republican candidate, without a Democratic rival.

State, federal races

For state House and Senate races for the districts that represent Grundy County, there will be no primary contests, but three will be contested in the General Election.

For the 38th State Senate District, Republican incumbent Sue Rezin will face Democrat Christine Benson in November, while Republican incumbent John Anthony will again face Democrat Martha J. Shugart for the 75th House District.

Democratic incumbent Kate Cloonen faces Republican Lindsay Parkhurst for the 79th House District. For Congress, U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican from Channahon who represents Grundy County, will face a primary challenger in Colin M. McGroarty of Rockford.

• Taylor R. Holm, 19, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on charges of obstructing identification and driving with a suspended license. She was given a Dec. 21 court date.

• Clementina Sullivan, 42, address not listed, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on charges of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. She was given a Dec. 21 court date.

• Brian L. Loeffler, 49, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on a charge of domestic battery. He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Deborah L. Kapinus, 50, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies on a charge of filing a false police report. She was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Jonathan L. Cox, 30, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police Sunday on charges of aggravated driving under the influence and driving while license suspended.

• Jose A. Acevedo-Lemus, 31, of Morris, was arrested

by Morris police Saturday on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content above 0.08 and driving without a valid license. He was given a Dec. 21 court date.

• Joshua T. Socha, 25, of Villa Park, was arrested by Morris police Friday on a charge of battery. He was given a Dec. 21 court date.

Gregory Munoz, 26, of Plainfield, was arrested by Morris police Wednesday on a charge of possession of more than 2.5 grams but less than 10 grams of marijuana. He was given a Dec. 21 court date.

It also gets recognition.

Five ceramic pieces, three

by Andrjeski and two by Valentine, were recently selected

by Joliet Junior College faculty in an annual submission contest between students from 22 area high schools. Out of 102 works included in the exhibition, Andrjeski and Valentine’s pieces accounted for five of the 25 that received Awards of Excellence from JJC faculty. No other students received more than one award.

It was the first time in MCHS’s history that all entries received Awards of Excellence, according to art teacher Chris Hankins. Even more impressive is that all five came from just two students.

“Normally, I wouldn’t submit two pieces from the same person,” Hankins said. “It says a lot about these two students and the talent they have.”

Out of Andrjeski’s three pieces on display, his favorite is an oddly-shaped blue tea set titled “Bubble Complex” that tilts on its legs. He used several different forms to piece it together.

“The teapots are on legs to give it a different vibe,” he said. “I do weird stuff.”

He was also honored for “Smokey Why,” which is a ceramic Raku, and “Evolution,” four pieces of stoneware that illustrate the evolution of animals.

Valentine’s favorite of her two awarded works is a series of four goblets that morph in shape and detail from one to the next and are white, tan, milky blue and purple in color.

She was also honored for “Circus,” a colorful stoneware teapot set.

Because of budget-related reductions to the school’s art program, Ceramics III and IV were not offered this year.

Andrjeski and Valentine, Hankins’ most advanced students, have been operating in an independent study format.

They work on pieces during their open periods and sometimes after school, based on a series of assignments from Hankins. Both young artists love creating original works and pushing themselves to meet deadlines and their own expectations. Andrjeski said sometimes it feels like he lives in the ceramics room.

“Especially when a due date is coming up,” Valentine said. “We come in every day.”

Andrjeski said art has always been his favorite class. It started with something as simple as painting at home as a

young child, but he has grown to welcome the challenge of building within the world of ceramics.

“I can create a thought better with clay,” Andrjeski said.

“I’m more of a maker than a drawer.”

Valentine said her brother has shown interest in art and ceramics and that likely prompted her to pursue it.

“Creating makes me think and work hard to get it the way I want it,” she said.

Andrjeski is Hankins’ teaching aide this year through the school’s co-op program. Rather than work at a fast food restaurant, he was able to convince Hankins to let him work with her – for free.

The experience could go a long way. Andrjeski has his sights set on becoming a ceramics teacher, even amid budget cuts to art programs in Morris and at other schools nationwide.

“He’ll make it work because he has the passion,” Hankins said. “He could teach at the college level [one day].”

Valentine plans to continue making ceramics as a hobby as she attends Northern Illinois University with hopes of becoming a nurse. Hankins said Valentine could take the same route as Andrjeski, but her passion is medicine.

“And that’s fine,” Hankins said. “We need as many good nurses as we can get.”

Grundy announces new committees

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As of Tuesday, the Grundy County Board will go from from 11 committees to 10, with adjustments being made to several of the panels.

Last year the board went from 14 to 11 committees at the December re-organizational meeting as a way to help save the county money, according to board Chairman David Welter.

Welter said further adjustments have been made to balance the workload between committees.

“The chairman is making sure to align the committee positions with the talent and interest of the board members,” County Administrator Doug Pryor said.

Welter said he wanted to narrow the committee structure to nine – which would have eliminated the Health and Education Committee – but other members felt it

would be better to keep it.

The committees moving forward from Dec. 1 are: Facilities and Animal Control; Finance; Health and Education; Highway and Transportation; Land Use and Environmental; Law and Justice and EMA; Legislative and VAC; Personnel and Insurance; Tax and GIS; and Technology and Elections.

Law and Justice used to include Facilities, but Facilities now is its own committee. Animal Control and EMA have been combined with Law and Justice.

Tax and GIS also is a new committee with the creation of the GIS Department.

Pryor said it made sense to have the former standalone EMA Committee join with Law and Justice, as there is much coordination between the two entities.

Pryor said there will be one more change due to the resig-

nation of board member John Galloway, who was assigned to three committees, including the vice chairman of the Finance Committee.

“The vacancies with John leaving will be addressed by the board chairman but I would expect some shuffling within the committees to fill his spots,” Pryor said.

BRIEF Dresden Station Unit 3 offline for maintenance

MORRIS – Operators in Morris removed Dresden Unit 3 from service early Monday morning to perform planned maintenance on the control rod drive system. Control rod drives inside the reactor raise and lower power level. Maintenance cannot be performed while the unit is operating, according to a news release from the company.

Dresden’s Unit 2 returned to full power Nov. 22 after comrefueling. Dresden Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago.

The station’s two nuclear energy units produce a total of more than 1,800 megawatts at full power – enough carbon-free electricity to power more than 1.2 million homes.

Channaholidays returns for second year Participants could win shopping spree by collecting local business stamps

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Last year, the village of Channahon and the Channahon Economic Development Corp. came up with Channaholidays as a way to promote local businesses and encourage residents to shop local all season long.

This year, the two entities have teamed up to continue that holiday campaign in hopes of making it even bigger than last year.

“Businesses are excited to

participate again,” said Nicole Norris, village of Channahon marketing and data coordinator. “They thought it was a great idea to keep doing it.”

To participate in Channaholidays, shoppers can pick up a stamp card at any participating business or Channahon Village Hall, 24555 S. Navajo Drive. Until Jan. 4, they can eat, play and shop with merchants displaying the Channaholidays poster in Channahon and collect stamps from participating merchants. Then, on Jan. 4, they can drop off the

stamp card at Village Hall for a chance to win a shopping spree.

Norris said the promotion created good buzz last year and helped get the word out about shopping local. Businesses are on board once again this year to continue spreading the word as they hope to reach more people in and surrounding Channahon.

Though purchasing is what drives business, in this case, no purchase is necessary. The promotion is meant to bring people inside local businesses to see what products and services each has to offer, Norris said.

Norris said it is necessary to continue supporting local businesses through promotions such as Channaholidays, as mom-and-pop stores try to

compete with the discounts offered by big-box retailers and Internet sales.

Gift cards were donated by participating businesses, Norris said, which will be put in a gift basket. Companies have donated other items, including Von Holten Eyecare, which donated a pair of Coach sunglasses, Norris said. First, second and third prizes will be awarded.

Ruth M. Weldon, 83, of Morris passed away Monday evening Nov. 23, 2015, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris.

Born Aug. 17, 1932, in Morris, she was the daughter of the late Milard and Dagmar (Svendsen) Moberg. She was raised and educated in Morris graduating from Morris High School with the Class of 1950.

On May 31, 1951, she married Lendsey A. Lewis at Fort Benning Georgia, later divorced. She was employed as a secretary with Uniroyal at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Elwood, Illinois. She then went to work with Heakin Research Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas and in 1990 she transferred with Heakin Research to Joliet, Illinois, as the office manager.

In 1993, she was employed with Will County Health Department until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Morris and the Morris American Legion Post 294 Women’s Auxiliary. She also enjoyed serving as a leader with the Girl Scouts and the local 4-H group.

Surviving are three daughters, Sherry (George) Miller of Morris, Donna Cockream (Neil Born) of Morris and Tracy (Robert) Snack of Wilmington, Illinois; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Preceding Ruth in death were her husband, parents, one daughter, Vicki Powers in 2003; and one brother, Donald Moberg.

This check was the result of touchdowns scored at each of the Morris football games.

The proceeds from this year’s event were donated to Special Connections of Grundy County.

The physicians and staff of Rezin Orthopedics and Sports Medicine put together this event for their patients who have had total joint replacement surgery.

The day was a celebration of patients’ restored ability and activity levels. With over 150 participants this event has become a reunion for the physicians and their patients, with many par-

ticipants returning year after year.

“The golf outing is always a fantastic event that we look forward to every year. We have been doing this event for 12 years now and it’s great year after year seeing the patients enjoying life free of pain,” stated Dr. Keith Rezin who attended the event and golfed with his patients.

WINTER SPORTS Rob Oesterle As the calendar moves on to December, the sports world has taken on a full-fledged winter aspect. Football is done, and with it goes the fall season for good.

Basketball has taken center stage the past couple of weeks, on both the boys and girls side, and is usually the highlight winter sport.

That certainly will be the case in Newark, where the talented Norsemen will try to improve on last season’s run to a Class 1A sectional championship game. With a bulk of the players from that team returning, Newark might have the stuff to make a trip to Peoria at the end of the season, as it did in 2012 when it won the Class 1A state championship.

In girls basketball, Minooka and Morris could make some noise by the time the end of the season rolls around, as could Gardner-South Wilmington and Newark.

But it’s in sports other than basketball that the area probably will make its presence known during the winter months.

Coal City and Minooka are always top wrestling programs, and this season shouldn’t be much different for either school.

All Coal City did last season was produce Class 1A individual state champions Joey Rivera, who won at 106 pounds with a 47-4 record, Cody Minnick (120, 52-1) and Corey Jurzak (132, 48-1). The Coalers also finished third in the team dual state meet, losing to eventual state champion Dakota in the semifinals before beating Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley for third place.

Of course, Coal City’s biggest challenge each year is just getting out of its regional, which also features perennial power Wilmington. Anyone looking for a fun experience should plan on being there when the Coalers and Wildcats hook up on at 5:30 p.m.

School. Sometimes, dual meets aren’t all that exciting, as wrestlers trying to prepare for weekend or postseason tournaments are sitting out or healing up. But when Coal City and Wilmington get together, anyone who can be on the mat finds his way there.

There’s pride on the line. It’s a friendly rivalry, but both teams want to have the yearlong bragging rights.

Minooka, meanwhile, will witness the return of Bernie Ruettiger as its head coach.

After taking a few years off, the man who led the Indians to the 2010 Class 3A state championship and state runner-up finishes the years before and after, will be back in charge.

While that certainly doesn’t guarantee a return to the state finals, it is definitely a step in

the right direction.

In the relatively new IHSA sport of boys bowling, Minooka quickly has found its way to the state’s elite, having finished seventh in last year’s state meet. Minooka was seventh a year ago with a 12,357 score, a 206.0 average a bowler, a game. Senior Chris

Dombrowski rolled a 2,544 series and took 27th, while classmate Alex Guglielmucci was 34th (2,510). Although those two won’t be part of the Indians’ team this year, both Kai Devine and Austin Schomig will, ensuring the Minooka team will have both talent and experience on its side.

As far as girls bowling goes, both Morris and Minooka are always in the running when it comes to postseason advancement, and this year should be no exception at either school.

And, let’s not forget competitive cheerleading and dance, in which Morris and Minooka have been in or near the top 10 in the state in their respective classes for the past few years.

If you can’t make it to a weekend competition, the teams generally perform at halftime of home basketball games and put on one heck of a show.

Newark boys go 3-1 to take third at Leland G. Strombom Tournament STAFF REPORTS SYCAMORE – In the first three games of the season, the Newark boys’ basketball team has averaged over 71 points a contest.

The Norsemen have had no trouble with multiple players finishing in double-digits, including a convincing 73-57 victory over Rochelle in the third game of Sycamore’s Leland G. Strombom Tournament on Friday.

The win, propelled by Cameron Myre’s 22-point effort, pushed the Norsemen into the third-place game against Sycamore on Saturday.

Newark was 2-1 entering that contest after starting the tournament with a 68-66 loss to Rockford Jefferson and a 75-69 victory over Hampshire.

Against Rochelle, Newark never trailed, despite having both Jack Clausel, who injured his ankle early in the first half, and Will Clausel (foul trouble), on the bench for most of the first half. Still, the Norsemen led, 38-32, at the break.

first double-digit lead of the game, 45-35, after Myre hit a 3-pointer and Will Clausel (18 points) scored a bucket with 5:31 left in the third quarter.

Evan Schomer also added 16 points for Newark.

Against Hampshire on Nov. 25, Newark was led by Jack Clausel (33 points, 12 rebounds), Will Clausel (19 points, eight assists) and Schomer (11 points).

Newark 50, Sycamore 38: In the tournament’s thirdplace game, Newark went on a 17-5 run in the second quarter to seize a commanding 2710 lead going into the locker room. It cruised from there to finish the tournament at 3-1.

Will Clausel led the Norsemen with 14 points and nine rebounds. Steve McGrath posted 14 points and five rebounds, while Cam Myre had 11 points.

Team confident, but still focused on one game at a time

John Fox’s bunch returned from a weekend off following its biggest win of the season on Thanksgiving night for a practice at Halas Hall Monday, six days before hosting the 3-8 49ers, who are 0-5 on the road this season.

“Just keeping focus on being the same guy, not looking at the scoreboard whether in the course of the game, or whether you won last week or lost last week, just preparing,” Fox said about avoiding any overconfidence. “We

have a slogan in there, ‘You fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.’”

Fox acknowledged the desire to play in relevant games down the stretch, but of course cautioned any looking ahead by his players.

“I think the whole thing is having meaningful or relevant games. You want to put yourself in that position, but you definitely want to keep the focus small,” he said. “All our focus right now is on the San Francisco 49ers.”

Tracy Porter said that the attitude is slightly different following Thursday’s win, knowing that playoffs are more than just a pipe dream at this point.

“It’s a little bit different knowing that we’re coming off a big victory in a short

week. We’ve never said we’re out of the playoff hunt, but we kind of put it on the back burner because we want to take things one step at a time,” he said. “We don’t want to look too far down the road because then we can overlook an opponent and then they come in and that’s how you get beat by an inferior team.

“We just want to take each game to heart like it’s a playoff game and at the same time we never put playoffs out of the question for us.”

Bridge writers can be predictable, but some use the chameleon system of bidding. They make the bid that fits the hand they have, not what their convention card says. For example, in today’s deal, what should North rebid with his hand?

One writer said that he must bid two diamonds, fourth suit game-forcing, because a three-heart rebid would be only game-invitational. He sarcastically called it modern bidding.

But what would he have done with ace-doubleton of spades and six hearts to the king-queen-jack? No doubt he would have recommended a game-invitational three hearts!

The advantage of two diamonds is that you hear another bid from partner (here, three clubs, to show the long suit) before continuing with three hearts.

Over the writer’s forcing threeheart rebid, South might well bid three no-trump, which North would probably pass. Then they would miss a makable seven-club contract.

After fourth-suit-forcing, the auction over three hearts would probably continue three no-trump – four clubs – four diamonds (control-bid) – four hearts (control-bid) – Blackwood – six or seven clubs. Admittedly, in seven clubs, South must guess the play. With this layout, he must establish dummy’s heart suit. You can work out the play.

The key point is that with strain and level uncertain, keep the early bidding as low as possible.

Gene-editing technique may lead to cure for some diseases Dear Dr. K: My son said he learned in school about a powerful new technique for editing genes that could possibly cure diseases. It also sounds a little scary. Can you tell me more?

Dear Reader: Your son probably is talking about a technique called CRISPR. This technique already is having a great impact on biological research, and it may someday help cure some human diseases.

Many diseases are caused by defects in how genes are built. This, in turn, can cause a defect in how the protein made by the gene is built. A good example is the first disease in which a genetic defect was identified: sickle cell anemia. The disease brings

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff terrible pain and damages organs. It can even cause strokes to occur in children. Without treatment, it can be fatal.

In sickle cell anemia, the defect is in the gene that makes a protein called globin.

Globin is inside red blood cells and carries oxygen to all parts of the body. The CRISPR technique allows a scientist to find that defect in the gene and correct it.

So will CRISPR cure sickle cell anemia? Maybe. But it won’t be simple. Editing genes in cells in a laboratory dish is one thing.

It’s quite another matter to edit genes in the cells of a living animal or human.

Diseases typically affect certain cells in certain organs.

So, to correct those diseases requires targeting just those genes, in just those cells and organs, deep within the body.

That is a real challenge.

Nevertheless, some success already is being reported in editing genes inside living animals. For example, the technique was recently used to edit a gene in a mouse’s liver that affects the level of cholesterol in the blood. CRISPR achieved a prompt and marked reduction in cholesterol – without any apparent ill effects.

Another challenge: Most diseases are caused by defects

in multiple genes, not just one, as in sickle cell anemia. However, the technique already has been modified to edit multiple genes simultaneously.

The CRISPR technology has the potential to affect our lives beyond curing diseases.

Experiments are underway to see if it can reduce the number of disease-carrying insects, or to grow hardier crops.

Any powerful new technology can, as you say, also be scary. A panel of distinguished scientists recently urged the world’s scientific community to refrain from using CRISPR to edit genes in human eggs or sperm until more is known about whether there may be potentially harmful results.

There are two lessons in

the story of CRISPR. First, we humans are smart enough to make breakthroughs like CRISPR, but not smart enough to know from where those breakthroughs will come.
