Habitat for Humanity affiliates have a word we use when we think the chips are down and then something miraculous happens: It’s called “habiluck.”

In the short time I have been with Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity, I have witnessed habiluck a few times, but nothing more substantial than through the help of First Midwest Bank.

This past spring, when we chose Shanna Enger and her children as our next partner family, we didn’t know if we would have all the funds to complete her home before the end of 2015. We assumed we would take a break from building during the winter months to continue our fundraising and then complete the home in early 2016.

tat for Humanity was the recipient of First Midwest Bank’s Farm Fair Draw Down during this year’s Corn Festival. The Draw Down fundraiser is an annual event First Midwest Bank hosts to benefit a different nonprofit each year. Being this year’s recipient could not have come at a better time for our Habitat affiliate.

We knew the Draw Down has continually been a successful event for each nonprofit involved, but we could not be more grateful with how successful the event turned out for us. Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity raised $17,000 from the fundraiser,

which was $6,000 over our goal for the event.

Even though we exceeded our goal for the Draw Down, we still had a $5,000 deficit from our total amount needed to finish the Engers’ home.

First Midwest Bank, knowing of our shortage, nominated Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity for a $5,000 grant through First Midwest Charitable Foundation, which we also will receive.

The money raised from the Draw Down and from the First Midwest Charitable Foundation grant will go toward finishing the Engers’ home, with the goal to have the family in their new home by Christmas.

Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket, sponsored and donated to the Draw Down fundraiser. We would not have been so successful without

your support. Most importantly, thank you to First Midwest Bank and your employees for continuing to support our community’s nonprofits and for creating some habiluck for Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Caleb Hobbick grabbed shoe box after shoe box Saturday, on a mission to fill each one with special items for a child in need he does not know, in a country far from the U.S., where he has never visited.

Hobbick, 13, of Morris, pondered each item he packed to make sure the child to receive his box would be happy and excited when it was opened.

“To give is better than to receive. We give something to a kid from across the world, who doesn’t even know who we are, and they don’t think anyone cares for them, but we do care,” Hobbick said. “We send them these boxes and teach them about Jesus.”

On Saturday at the Christian Youth Center of Morris, 35 volunteer staff helped 345 people pack more than 2,200 shoe boxes slated to reach more than 15 countries around the globe. This pack day, called Shoebox 1K, was part of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, which began in 1993.

According to Samaritan’s Purse, the mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world and to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Davison brings compassion to Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Tiffany Davison brings a wealth of experience in working with juveniles and young victims to the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office, according to State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

Davison was hired to fill the position vacated by assistant state’s attorney Chris Dearth, who left Oct. 29.

“Tiffany and I worked together at the Kankakee State’s Attorney’s Office for six years.

She’s exceptional with juvenile cases and with young victims,” Helland said. “She will be an asset to the county.”

Davison was born and raised in Chicago, where she worked for The Chicago Defender as a high school student.

She attended DePaul University and received a bachelor’s degree in English before going on to Northern Illinois University College of Law in DeKalb, where she graduated with her juris doctorate in 2003.

Davison was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in May 2005 and worked for one year as an associate attorney at John W. Barnes & Associates before joining the Kankakee County Office of the State’s Attorney in March 2006.

She worked for eight years in the juvenile division, traffic division and criminal division in Kankakee.

Davison said she enjoys working as a prosecutor because of the one-on-one interactions with the public and being able to have direct contact with victims as she helps prepare

them to testify in court.

“I’m someone who knows how to interact with the public, I care,” she said. “It’s different when you are the prosecutor.

I think everyone cares but this is a different viewpoint. I don’t just care about the wording of the law, but I care about the people, all the people involved.”

She said she enjoys being able to help people and knows she can help victims.

Her caring doesn’t end in the courtroom.

When she isn’t at work she volunteers with Hospitals for Humanity as a human resources director.

She works as a member of a needs assessment team, which includes travel to other countries for upcoming medical missions.

Mazon community remembers Vietnam for Veterans Day

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MAZON – American Legion Post 352 of Mazon celebrated Veterans Day on Sunday with a dinner and presentations on the history of the Vietnam War in honor of the war’s 50th anniversary.

Vietnam War memorabilia, from AK-47s and Vietnamese money to combat boots and fatigues, were on display around the room.

Speaker Don Boyle laid out a timeline of the war, from the very first soldier killed to the roles played by presidents from Eisenhower to Kennedy to Johnson.

He talked about how the United States got involved in Vietnam and how the U.S. involvement actually dates back as far as 1943.

“I was shocked [to learn that],” said Boyle.

A Vietnam veteran, Boyer was one of seven speakers who talked about the country, its people and the reasons for and causes of the war.

Boyle spent one year, between 1968 and 1969, in Vietnam as an Army combat engineer. His job was to run controlled mine sweeps and disarm mines and booby traps; he was on Hamburger Hill.

Hansen starred in the 1974 film that has become a classic among horror-movie aficionados and spawned a series of sequels. In the movie, friends visiting their grandfather’s house are hunted by Leatherface, a chain-saw wielding maniac.

Hansen’s character in the movie “is one of the most iconic evil figures in the history of cinema,” said his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, who confirmed the death.

In 2013, Hansen published his book “Chain Saw Confidential,” which gave readers a behind-the-scenes look at

how the film was made, Eisenstadt said.

Hansen lived in Maine for about 40 years, where he worked as an actor and writer, Eisenstadt said.

At the time of his death, Hansen was at work on a film called “Death House,” his agent said. Hansen was a writer and producer of the film, which the Internet Movie Database says is about how a secret government facility becomes ground zero for the most horrific prison break in the history of mankind. The film is scheduled to come out next year, Eisenstadt said.

Hansen was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. He came to the U.S. and studied at the University of Texas, where he majored in English and Scandinavian Studies, Eisenstadt said.

Surviving Hansen is his partner of 13 years, Betty Tower.

Redskins end season with Rocky-type finish VIEWS Rob Oesterle NEW LENOX – When a movie, usually a sports-related one, features an underdog who overcomes a traditional longtime nemesis or opponent, the talk about that movie it is how is a “Rocky” type of story.

Everyone knows Rocky Balboa, the boxer created by Sylvester Stallone who, in the many sequels that came after the original, rose from being a leg-breaker for a local loan shark to become the world champion heavyweight boxer.

What few people remember is that, in the original movie – the one that won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1976 – Rocky lost the big fight at the end.

There was a similarity to Rocky in the Morris volleyball team’s run through the postseason that ended Thursday in a 25-23, 27-25 loss to Joliet Catholic Academy.

The Redskins, who finished the season with a 17-18-2 record, were the underdog, and they gave the champs all they wanted before falling just short. But, where Rocky was handed a shot at the title because Apollo Creed wanted to give an unknown a chance at the American Dream, the Redskins earned their way to the title match by winning their way there.

Morris could have been put on the mat at any time during the postseason, as all of their matches leading up to the sectional championship went three games. In all four, though, they rose to the occasion in the third game and emerged with a victory.

It would have been interesting to see what might have happened had the sectional championship match gone to a third game, but it wasn’t to be.

In the original movie, Rocky was beaten so badly that his eye was swollen shut and he begged his trainer to cut him to relieve the

Morris’ top player, Kaylin Korte – one of the top high school players in the country – injured her wrist while diving for a ball in Tuesday’s win against Providence Catholic. She sat out of practice Wednesday, but was on the court Thursday with her wrist taped up and gave it everything she had. She was outstanding, leading the team with 17 kills and nine digs to go with two blocks.

Time and again throughout the postseason, the Redskins proved themselves to be more than a one-woman show. Even as Korte elevated her game in the playoffs, the rest of the team did as well.

Numbers increased for nearly every player, as Janelle Brehm and Calleen Soper got more kills and digs, Veronica Johnson and Ryan Friend had more blocks, setters Ashley Hood and Addison Polite had more assists and digs and libero Corrinne Day had more digs and service points.

“If someone had told me

before our first regional game against Chicago Ag Science that we would be playing for a sectional title, I would have given them a huge hug and kiss,” first-year Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “This team really made an impact and showed they can be a contender at this level. We were very young and inexperienced this year. Hopefully, an experience like this will only help.

“We played a team that finished second in the state last year and plays together most of the year in club. We really are only together as a team for two months, and for us to do what we did just says so much about the work ethic and character of these girls.”

And, lest we forget, in “Rocky II,” Rocky won the fight at the end. Will life imitate art? Tune in next year.

As I pulled my car through our circle drive, I passed right by a maple tree emblazoned with golden leaves. The sun rifled through the branches illuminating the yellow hues.

The richness of the colors took my breath away.

During my admiration of the scene, a pair of squirrels circled the trunk. They barked and chirped at each other. No doubt a quarrel over an acorn spurred this battle. The gray squirrel demonstrated more dominance over the red as they spiraled towards the top of the tree. I laughed to myself and continued down the driveway.

Just then a gust of wind shot from nowhere. Red, orange, yellow and cinnamon tinted leaves swirled towards the ground. Thankfully, my windows were down. Hearing those leaves under the passing

seemed to barely miss the treetops. Even from my seat, I heard the whistling pulse of their wings as they passed by.

What a scene.

It seems that this picture-perfect fall we are experiencing holds surprises around every corner. Even as I stand in the dark each morning and look to the crystal clear sky, the stars sparkle and fill the horizon. What a way to put oneself into perspective. Yes, the world is much bigger than any single person. We only are here a short while compared to the vastness of the universe around us.

I hope that I never get so out of touch with the natural world that I fail to take the time to enjoy those little things. Those brief moments when nature’s magic is there to be enjoyed. It is all there for us, we just need take the time and pay attention.

I so enjoy those evening walks in the crisp fall air. With

the change of the clocks the long shadows come sooner and darkness marches over us before we are ready. It is a challenge to squeeze in those evening strolls with such a constraint on sunlight, but it still is worth the effort. Believe me, I will try to squeeze them in.

Who knows when winter’s blustery days will be upon us.

The mild temperatures we’ve been blessed with can turn in a second. The blue sky will be replaced with the cold gray of the next season.

Until then, enjoy every single moment you can. Each season holds gifts for us, but autumn is definitely one that can leave us breathless.

Redskins tune up in swim meet STAFF REPORTS BOURBONNAIS – The Morris girls swim team competed in the fifth Annual Boiler Tune-Up on Friday.

Jennifer Ashley led the way for the Redskins, as she won the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:07.76, while taking third in the 200 individual medley in 2:35.26.

Alex Kaste won the 50-meter freestyle for Morris in 27.10, while Elizabeth Smith finished second in the 200 IM (2:32.88) and third in the 100 freestyle (1:00.29). The 200 medley relay team of Ashley, Smith, Kaste and Hannah Clubb took third-place honors (2:07.88), while the 400 freestyle relay team of Ashley, Morgan Abraham, Smith and Kaste finished second in 4:10.03.

Fangio’s best defenses with the 49ers were always strong in yards/points differential – fourth in yards/second in points in 2011; third in yards/ second in points in 2012; and fifth in yards/third in points in 2013. Last year, the 49ers faltered – they were fifth in yards and 10th in points – and finished 8-8. That’s one reason Fangio is here today.

The Bears don’t know yet how to put the hammer down.

Against the Vikings, they led. 20-13, with less than five minutes to play and the Vikings facing second-and-17 at their 9-yard line after McPhee sacked Teddy Bridgewater.

But Bridgewater scrambled for 18 yards on the next play.

“We have to find a better way to close out games and finish games with an attitude,” safety Antrel Rolle said.

“That’s where we’re losing our edge.”

Attitude, however, is a tough thing to develop when you’re losing. That’s another challenge the defense faces.

But there’s always hope with Fangio running the show.

“We had one of our best weeks of practice,” linebacker Christian Jones said. “We’ve been doing a lot of good things right. We just have to carry that over on Monday night.”

Lawmakers grounded by regular workplace RUSHVILLE – Recently, I got to watch two state senators working.

No, not drafting bills, pontificating on policy or glad-handing constituents.

They were working at their other jobs – doing something other than politics.

One, Kyle McCarter, was supervising on a factory floor; the other, John Sullivan, was working behind a microphone as an auctioneer.

Service in the Illinois General Assembly is supposed to be part time. But many lawmakers choose not to treat it as such and don’t hold outside employment.

That’s unfortunate.

Finding yourself in regular workplace keeps you grounded. It also provides a daily real-world perspective McCarter is a Republican.

Sullivan is a Democrat. But both know the challenges faced by businesses.

Why? Because they actually operate them.

I ran into Sullivan last month at my uncle Al Hamilton’s sale in Rushville. I was impressed by how professionally Sullivan’s auction business operated.

“One dollar bid, now two, now two, will ya’ give me two?

His cadence was hypnotizing.

I probably spent too much on a bucket that my grandma used to own and that ended up in Al’s house But, by gosh, I was under Sullivan’s spell.

Back in the bad ol’ days when Rod Blagojevich was governor, Sullivan almost singlehandedly blocked legislation that would have taxed farmers for the seed and feed and other inputs they buy.

Sullivan is retiring from the Legislature, and I’ll miss hearing him speak on the floor of the Senate – albeit at a slower cadence than at the auctioneer’s microphone.

McCarter operates a Lebanon factory that makes exercise pads, biohazard containment devices, breathing apparatuses and a host of other things.

As we strolled through the factory floor, McCarter chatted with various workers.

His rapport with them seemed more personal than the usual boss-employee dialog.

He said many of the people he employs are folks who need help, such as domestic abuse victims and folks just out of drug rehabilitation.

It was a softer side of the lawmaker than I usually see on the Senate floor, where he has a reputation as a hardnosed fiscal conservative.

He said one reason he keeps the business going is just to help people.

Operating a business has given him insight into how to set spending priorities and care for others.

It’s refreshing to see both men use real-world business experiences to address the state’s problems in Springfield.

That is true. Even at the bridge table, a reckless line of play can work out well, when the cards are favorably distributed. However, in newspaper columns and classes, recklessness is costly.

In this deal, for example, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads the heart jack to dummy’s queen?

North’s sequence showed game-forcing values, at least one fourcard major and five-plus clubs. (Probably East did well not to overcall two spades. North would have doubled, and the contract could have been defeated by two tricks. But if North-South had still ended in three no-trump, a spade lead would have been lethal. Also, East might have doubled three no-trump, which would have asked for an unusual lead. Typically, West would have led his shorter major.)

South starts with five top tricks: two spades and three hearts. It looks easy to play on diamonds to get those four extra winners. But if the defender with the ace wins the second round of the suit and switches to spades, declarer probably won’t see his hand again until it is too late.

Instead, South should lead a club at trick two. Suppose East wins and shifts to the spade queen. Now declarer must win in the dummy and lead a diamond – not a reckless club. If East takes this trick, South gets two spades, three hearts and four diamonds. If East ducks, South wins in his hand, cashes the heart ace, then leads his club queen to take two spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs.

Benefits of hip surgery outweigh possible complications Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in July 2012.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor says I need hip replacement surgery.

She says it will help my pain. But I’m worried about complications.

Should I be?

Dear Reader: I get a lot of questions about hip replacement surgery, and I’m in a good position to answer them: I had a hip replacement about a decade ago.

Before I give a more detailed answer, let me cut to the chase: The benefits of hip replacement surgery greatly outweigh the risks.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff First, the basics.

Your hip is a ball in a socket joint: The big bone in the top part of your leg has a top that’s shaped like a ball, and your pelvic bone has a cup into which the ball fits.

Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the bony ball and socket with an artificial device made of metal or ceramic.

As with every type of surgery, there can be complications. Fortunately, they are very unusual.

So what can go wrong?

• BLOOD CLOTS. These can

form in the veins of the legs, shake loose, and travel to your lungs. This can be a serious complication. However, various treatments have greatly reduced this risk.

• INFECTION. Your implant can become infected. If you feel new pain in the implanted hip, particularly if you also feel sick and have a fever, seek immediate treatment.

• DISLOCATION. In the weeks after your hip replacement, take great care to keep from dislocating your implant before the surrounding tissues have healed enough to hold it in place. To reduce dislocation risk, do not bend over farther than your waist for about six weeks after your surgery. Also avoid turning your recuperating leg in or

out. Even afterward, there is a chance of a painful dislocation.

• LEG-LENGTH DISCREPANCY. After surgery, your legs may become slightly unequal in length. If so, a lift in the shoe of the shorter leg can fix the problem.

• LOOSENING. A replacement joint can loosen because the cement never secured it properly or eventually wore out. This may also happen if the surrounding bone does not grow into the implant to create a tight attachment.

• BONE LOSS. As a joint implant suffers wear and tear, loose particles can be released into the joint. As your immune system attacks these particles, it can also attack surrounding bone and

weaken it. This may loosen the bone’s connection to the implant.

I’m not minimizing any of the possible complications of hip surgery. But the point is that they are very infrequent.

Look for a surgeon who performs lots of hip replacements and has a fine reputation.

With such a surgeon, the likelihood of any complication is even less. I had no complications.

In fact, looking back on it, my only regret about having hip replacement surgery is that I waited so long to have it done!
