Postal Service to offer with 7-day package delivery MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Postal Service has kicked off the holiday shipping season and will be delivering packages seven days a week through Christmas Day throughout Chicago area, including Morris, because of continued package volume growth.

“The Postal Service ships more packages to more places than anyone else,” said Central Illinois District Manager Peter Allen in a news release.

“During the holidays, we’re raising the bar with enhanced tracking and Sunday delivery, providing excellent service and reliability that only Santa can compete with.”

MORRIS – Morris Theatre Guild takes a humorous look at a serious subject as it performs “God’s Favorite” by Neil Simon as the first of three Neil Simon plays offered this year in the Morris Theatre Guild’s 2014-15 season.

The series of plays has been nicknamed the “Season of Simon.”

“It’s a play very much about faith,” Assistant Director Judy Miller said. “It looks at how to deal with adversity.

While the situation sounds serious, Neil added humor.”

The play directed by Annie Ficht-Kowalczyk looks at how Joe Benjamin, played by Joe Baima of Marseilles, is a modern day Job who has to deal with the demands of his wife and the ungrateful nature of his children when he is visited by Sidney Lipton, played

by Christopher Ponko of Romeoville. Sydney, who is a messenger from God, was sent to test Joe’s faith.

Ficht-Kowalczyk said “God’s Favorite” was the perfect choice for her debut directing experience.

“I love Neil Simon,” she said. “It’s a play that will let those attending forget all their troubles.”

While some of the actors seem to have part of their own character in them, other cast members have said their respective rolls are a bit of a stretch for them.

Baima said Joe Benjamin is not at all like him, as he tends to be the type of person who speaks his mind.

“I’m not the kind to suffer in silence,” Baima said. “It’s not my personality at all.”

But the chance to get to go through a range of emotions – from calm to out of his head – is something Baima loves about the part.

Ponko said Sydney Lipton is a blast to play. While they both could be described as flamboyant, Ponko said he typically is more quiet than his character.

He said he is enjoying the opportunity to act as crazy as the character is.

“It is so much fun. There are so many laughs throughout the show,” Ponko said.

The play was originally performed on Broadway in 1974. The attention to detail by the actors and director keep the stage and costuming in tune with the era.

Baima said he hopes everyone comes out to see the show and the actors, who have been practicing long hours in order to perform six shows in November for the public, and

State’s Attorney’s office investigating payments to sheriff’s deputies

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Cash payments made to Grundy County sheriff’s deputies, a decades-old practice at the sheriff’s department, is being investigated by the state’s attorney’s office.

It was brought to the county’s attention last month that sheriff deputies were being paid in cash for after-hours work for Exelon Dresden Generating Station, a nuclear power plant on the outskirts of Morris.

The Grundy County Board’s Law and Justice Committee met Wednesday night where the topic was again discussed. Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland told the committee his office has decided to investigate the issue.

Vicki Geiger, vice chairwoman of the committee, said Thursday she’s confident the committee will find a resolu-

tion, but the issue is now in the state’s attorney’s hands.

“None of us are qualified to do anything with this information. We can only refer it to the state’s attorney at this point,” she said. “We can’t give out any legal advice or concerns.”

Exelon pays the sheriff’s department to compensate the deputies who provide traffic control for the plant for its annual outage, when hundreds of additional employees are brought on to repair and upgrade plant machinery.

The outage can lead to traffic jams, which is why sheriff’s deputies are paid to help move traffic along.

But, the money has never been processed by the Grundy County Treasurer’s office.

The sheriff’s department cashes the check and the cash is divided between the deputies who provided traffic control with no input from the treasurer’s office — which means deductions, such as

taxes, retirement fund and insurance are not taken out.

“Is it legal or illegal?” Law and Justice Committee Chairman Harold Vota asked Helland at Wednesday’s committee meeting.

Helland said the state’s attorney’s office is looking into the issue and will deal with it in the future.

“The sheriff admitted in previous meetings that he

made cash payments to deputies,” Helland said after the meeting. “It’s going to be investigated.”

Sheriff Kevin Callahan was present at the meeting, but declined to comment. Last year, when he was appointed to fill the late Sheriff Terry Marketti’s place, was his first year organizing the Exelon traffic control details.

He has previously said the

cash payments to deputies for the Exelon work has been a common practice in the department for more than 20 years.

Committee member David Welter said the issue was brought to the Finance Committee and the sheriff’s department is cooperating.

“We’re just trying to figure out all the options we need to take,” Welter said.

Behavorial Health Alliance hosts Blue Christmas events

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Sharon Schultz remembers her husband, John, as a generous man and wonderful husband.

With 33 years of a strong marriage under the couple’s belt, John died in 2004 from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“Christmas was difficult.

We would spend our Christmases together, and I always had a good time with him,” Schultz said.

To battle the holiday blues, Schultz decided to attend a worship service event at First United Methodist Church of Morris in 2008.

The service is part of the annual Blue Christmas Help for the Hurting During the Holidays events, which are promoted by the Behavioral Health Alliance of Grundy County and organized by participating organizations.

“From a mental health standpoint, a lot of people have extra pressure and burdens at holiday times,” said Anita Young, member of the Behavioral Health Alliance.

“They need extra healing.”

The Behavioral Health Alliance started promoting the Blue Christmas events in 2011.

The first event will be held Nov. 17 at the UC Davis-Callahan Funeral Home in Morris, said John Callahan, owner of the home. This is the second year the funeral home has held a program.

“I prefer looking at it as preparing for the holidays because we have Thanksgiving and many other holidays to prepare for with that empty chair at the table,” Callahan said.

The program is not just for those who have lost a loved one to death, but also for those separated from their loved ones, he said, such as having someone overseas for the holidays.

The funeral home’s grief counseling team will give presentations, and afterward people are welcome to stay and connect with others with similar situations.

“Maybe they will form a connection or friendship that goes beyond the funeral home,” Callahan said.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission in cooperation with the Hines MMU, the Vet Center and the IL Department of Veterans Affairs continues to offer services to eligible veterans in Grundy County.

The Hines Mobile Medical Unit will be in Grundy County on the following days: • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, at the Coal City American Legion, 1752 E. Division St., Diamond • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 17 at Minooka Village Hall, 121 E. McEvilly Road, Minooka From time to time the Hines MMU vehicle can be in for maintenance, but the staff will still be at these locations.

If you do not see the vehicle, check inside these location.

The Hines MMU staff is dedicated to continuing to serve the veterans even when the vehicle is not present, according to a news release.

The VA Mobile Medical Unit has flu shots available to all enrolled and eligible veterans. The shots will be available during the November visits of the MMU while vaccine supplies last.

The Veterans Mobile Medical Unit from Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is continuing its monthly visits to Grundy County. The Hines MMU comes to Grundy County on the first and third Mondays of each month.

The VA’s Vet Center continues to provide counseling and transition services to eligible veterans on the first Thursday of each month.

The Grundy County VAC office hosts the Vet Center each month. Veterans that are interested in services can contact the Vet Center at 708-444-0561 or 815-941-3152.

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Veteran Service Officer comes to Grundy County twice a month and has moved their location to the Grundy County VAC office. The IDVA VSO will be in the county on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The state VSO offers a variety of veteran’s services to include issuing fishing and hunting licenses to veterans that are service connected at least 10 percent.

To receive these services veterans should bring a copy of their discharge documents to confirm eligibility and validate active duty. If you do not have a copy, the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission can assist you. For information, call the VAC at 815-941-3152.

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Back in August, an unassuming looking freshman girl decided to go out for the Morris cross country team.

Mya Shannon had never run cross country before, but she was a member of the Shabbona Middle School track team before entering high school. She will also be one of the mainstays of the Redskins’ varsity girls basketball team this winter, so she thought cross country might keep her in shape.

“I was trying to decide between volleyball and cross country in the fall,” she said.

“I knew some girls that already ran cross country so I decided to give it a try. I feel like going into basketball season, I will be ahead conditioning wise.

They do a lot of conditioning in volleyball, too, but that’s short bursts. The cardiovascular I get from cross country will help in basketball.”

Turns out, she’s pretty darn good at cross country, too.

Shannon finished fifth overall at last weekend’s Class 2A East Peoria Sectional, covering the 2.95 miles in a personal-best time of 18:28. That allowed her to become what is believed to be the first female runner in Morris history to make the state meet, and to avenge a split-second loss to LaSalle-Peru’s Megan Krolak the week before at the Class 2A Morris Regional.

She will try to improve on that time Saturday at Peoria’s Detweiler Park. The Class 2A girls race begins at 11 a.m.

“I definitely didn’t expect to go to state at the start of the year,” she said. “I ran with the team and was just an awkward freshman. After the first meet, I saw that I could compete at this level.”

Even early in the season, her talent was evident, as Shannon began her year with a bang. She took third at the Morris Early

She also earned all-conference honors in the always-strong Northern Illinois Big 12, took second in the regional and fifth in the sectional. She dropped 31 seconds off her previous personal-best time in the regional and seven more seconds off of that in the sectional. Her sectional time was 18:28, compared to the 19:59 she turned in at the first meet of the year, the Morris Early Bird Classic.

“The big ‘light-bulb moment,’ I think, came for Mya at the Plano Invitational,” Morris

coach Joe Blumberg said. “She took first there, and it was a 12team meet. For her to be able to finish first at a big meet like that really gave her the confidence she needed. Then to be all-conference in, arguably, the second-best Class 2A cross country conference in the state was a big accomplishment.

And, the second-place finish in the regional where she realized the could beat Megan Krolak, which she did in the sectional.

“We saw potential during summer running. What’s as impressive as her physical talent is her mental approach. She’s a competitor and doesn’t like to lose at all.”

The top 25 runners will earn all-state honors, but Shannon is more worried about the clock than the competition.

“I would love to be all-state,” she said. “But if I run under 18 minutes and am still not in the top 25, that would be fine with me. I want to have my time at 17:59 or under. That’s my goal.

It’s the last race of the year. It’s all or nothing, so I have nothing to worry about.

“I am a little nervous, but not as nervous as I was for the regional. That was the first real big-time high school event I had ever been in. State is going to be like that, except with about twice as many runners.”

That learning starts in the middle, as the returning core of Bulls players are starting to figure out how valuable the addition of forward Pau Gasol just might be.

“We practice hard, we challenge each other in practice, and I just feel like he’s really in a groove right now, he’s back to his old tricks, he’s motivated,’’ Gibson said of Gasol, and his practice battles with the two-time NBA champion.

“That’s good for us. It’s a real good thing when you can just throw the ball down low and know you’re going to get something out of it, either a foul or a good shot to the basket.’’

In other words, the antithesis of the Carlos Boozer Era. Not only is Gasol, along

with Mike Dunleavy, one of only two starters to answer the bell for every game, but was averaging 18.8 points – second to Jimmy Butler’s 19.7 points per game – led the team with 10.6 rebounds a game, and has 2.60 blocks a contest.

And while it’s taken a bit of time to accept the Thibodeau way, at 34-years-old, he’s been as good as advertised.

“For sure, it was re-energizing decision,” Gasol said of life away from the Los Angeles Lakers. “That was one of the main reasons why I made a change, to rejuvenate, to re-energize, to re-motivate myself and be in a position to win. I want to help a team be a contender for a championship.”

Enough so that Gasol has even understood the heavy

workload the last two games with Noah sidelined. Forty-one minutes clocked in on Tuesday, and another 36 Wednesday.

“Forty [minutes a game] is probably excessive on a consistent basis, but from 30-35 [a game] I’m OK with it,” Gasol said. “I think that’s something I actually kind of want myself, to be out there for that long.”

As far as the 4-1 record, Gasol is obviously thrilled with it, but it comes with a warning.

“This league isn’t about five games, 10 games or 20 games,” Gasol said. “You have to do it consistently throughout a season. And not just when you feel great but when you’re banged up. It’s always good to start off well, but now you have to build on it and keep getting better.”

Morris’ DesLauriers named Academic All-District STAFF REPORTS NAPERVILLE – North Central College football player Marc DesLauriers, a senior from Morris, has been voted to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Seven Football Team (NCAA Division III), as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America program is

designed to recognize student-athletes for combining academic and athletic success.

In order to be eligible, nominees must have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale) in addition to their athletic credentials. The nominations are then voted upon by the CoSIDA membership.

District Seven includes NCAA Division III institutions in the states of Illinois,

Indiana and Ohio. DesLauriers is one of five offensive linemen on the All-District Team and is one of three representatives from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

DesLauriers, a sociology major, is in his third year as a starter on North Central’s offensive line. He has started all eight of the Cardinals’ games this season, providing protection for an offense which ranks first in the CCIW

and 14th in all of Division III in scoring (42.5 points a game).

Along with the rest of the offensive line, DesLauriers was named to D3football.com’s Team of the Week after helping pave the way for a 303-yard rushing effort in a 28-7 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Sep. 20.

“It’s going to be hard,” Hossa said. “But on the other hand, somebody else has a chance to step in. Somebody else is going to have more ice time. I’m sure there are lots of hungry guys to fill that spot.”

Count Regin among those hungry guys. After playing 17 regular-season games and five playoff games with the Hawks last season following a trade

from the New York Islanders in January, Regin was ecstatic to re-sign over the summer.

But he didn’t make the team out of training camp, cleared waivers and was sent to Rockford.

“It was a tough couple of days,” Regin said. “It wasn’t what I expected. … But after the first couple of days I kind of got over the disappointment and started thinking what I could do to get myself back.”

It hasn’t sounded like a 4-1 team.

“We’ve been dodging bullets,” coach Tom Thibodeau said, following the latest Bulls win on Wednesday.

Thibodeau was talking about his squad once again losing the rebound battle, this time to Milwaukee. However, he could have been talking about any number of concerns with this team.

“We haven’t even done it yet,’’ guard Derrick Rose said, when asked about him and his teammates clicking on all cylinders. “We’ve had games where we’ve played really good basketball, but defensively, we haven’t done it.

“Offensively, we’re fine, we’re scoring a lot of points, but we know this year it’s all about defense, and that will hopefully get us to a championship.”

Nitpicking?

Maybe, especially since the good this team has shown just five games into the season has far outweighed the bad.

Hoping GOP unlock the gridlock Republicans around the nation enjoyed a night of election results in which they finally defeated President Barack Obama, a man who has twice won national elections.

But now what happens if Republicans run the Senate along with the House? If the past is a guide, a Republican Senate will support the usual GOP agenda: Cut taxes, cut spending, cut regulations and rattle sabers. For the past two years, that approach has managed to stymie the economy’s recovery, delay infrastructure investment, ignore climate change, block immigration reform and present a divided United States government to a world looking for U.S. leadership.

Opposing the president isn’t a program. It’s an attitude, and not a constructive one. Obama is done running, and Republicans need to stop running against him and start governing.

Congressional Republicans will face Obama’s veto and likely Sen. Harry Reid’s procedural machinations as minority leader. Taking the Democrats head-on will lead only to collisions without progress. It’s time to get government working again so more Americans can get working again.

U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers, the North Carolina Republican who won handily over Democrat Clay Aiken, sounded the right note in her victory speech when she commented on the Republican takeover of the Senate. Notably, it was the same tone of reconciliation that Aiken stressed in his campaign.

“I’m so encouraged now because I know we’re going to be able to go back to Washington and actually make progress happen,” she said. “I want to work with our Democratic colleagues in Washington. We’ve done so much already in that effort but unfortunately unrealized because of politics. It’s time to put all of that aside. It’s time to look to the future for this country.”

This time, instead of a Contract with America, congressional Republicans should propose a contract with Obama.

Agree to get something done on jobs, tax reform and immigration. If this election spurs cooperative work rather than deeper gridlock, it will be a victory for all Americans.

Drift to secular left in America’s ‘mushy middle’ Crack open a traditional hymnal, and most American Protestants will be able to belt out the classic hymn, “Holy, holy, holy!

Lord God Almighty!”

Also, most practicing Catholics will be familiar with these Catechism lines: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in Himself. ... The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the ‘consubstantial Trinity.’ ” The language is mysterious and ancient. Yet according to a new survey probing what Americans believe on crucial theological issues, a majority of those polled – 71 percent – believe in the Trinity.

But that whole “God in three persons” thing? Not so much.

In fact, 75 percent of Catholics polled by LifeWay Research agreed the “Holy Spirit is a force, not a personal being” – a shocking number in light of the fact that only 52 percent of non-Christian Americans took that

VIEWS Terry Mattingly unorthodox stance. Among “mainline,” mostly liberal Protestants, 74 percent denied the personhood of the Holy Spirit along with a small majority – 58 percent – of evangelical Protestants.

The spring survey is the latest to show most Americans affirm traditional religious beliefs, sort of, but turn into “cafeteria” believers who pick and choose whatever makes them feel comfortable when it comes to doctrinal specifics, said LifeWay President Ed Stetzer. Things can get foggy and confusing in the “mushy middle” of the religious spectrum, where Americans worship a “Christian-ish god,” rather than the God of traditional Christian faith.

The real action in the “Theological Awareness Benchmark Study” conducted for Ligonier Ministries of Orlando, Florida, is among “nominal” believ-

ers. Stetzer described this “mushy middle” as the 25 percent of Americans who are “cultural Christians” in name only, and another 25 percent made up of “congregational Christians” who may visit sanctuary pews at Christmas and Easter.

The bottom line: Increasing numbers of ordinary Americans no longer think of themselves as “sinners,” especially on issues of sex, and don’t really care what their pastors or churches think about that. In fact, 82 percent said their church has no authority to “declare that I am not a Christian.”

On the Bible, 48 percent said it was the “Word of God,” while 45 percent said the scriptures were written for each person to interpret as he or she sees fit.

Heaven is real for 67 percent of Americans and 61 percent believe in hell.

Then again, 55 percent of “mainline” Protestants and 67 percent of Catholics, compared to 19 percent of evangelicals, believe there are many different ways to find salvation. Only 55

percent of “mainliners” and 45 percent of Catholics affirmed that salvation is found through Jesus alone.

The key is that more and more nominal believers are now sliding into the growing camp of truly secular, vaguely “spiritual” or “religiously unaffiliated” Americans – the so-called “nones” phenomenon described in a famous 2012 study released by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

“We can expect the movement by ‘nominals’ into secularism to continue,” said Stetzer. “Would people in the mushy middle choose to identify with the right, which will increasingly be portrayed as harsh and judgmental and even bigoted? No way.

More and more ‘nominals’ will join the ‘nones.’ ”

A bridge deal is full of possibilities, some fact (what actually happened) and some fiction (what might have happened). This deal is a good example. It could be played in a duplicate, and each table would have a different auction or card-play sequence.

First, after North passes, should East open three clubs? This would normally promise a seven-card suit, but as there is no weak two in clubs, many pairs would start with three clubs, even in second position (where one tends to be the most conservative), because the suit is so strong.

When this board was originally played, East passed, South opened one diamond, and West produced a twospade weak jump overcall, not caring that he held four hearts. North made an aggressive raise to three diamonds.

Now South should have shut his eyes and bid three no-trump. Yes, that contract can be defeated if West leads a club, but why should he?

However, South tried for game with four diamonds and North passed, of course.

West chose the interesting lead of his singleton trump (instead of the spade king). What should South have done?

Declarer started with nine top tricks: one spade, three hearts and five diamonds. So he immediately conceded a club to arrange a club ruff in his shorter trump hand for a sixth diamond trick.

As the cards lay, he could not gain two ruffs for 11 tricks. If you are curious, try it. **

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married for eight years. We have no children of our own, but he has an 18-year-old daughter from a previous relationship who has been coming over every other weekend and holidays since she was 10.

Even though she lives with her mother, she has a dedicated room that’s packed to the gills with her clothes, games, toys, etc.

I would like to repurpose her room now that she is off to college. My husband says no. We don’t have a guest bedroom, so I feel strongly that it makes no sense to keep her room intact when we could use the extra space.

I have made many sacrifices as a stepmother over the years, and feel I deserve to finally stretch out a bit and enjoy the extra space. By the way, all the furniture in her room happens to be mine, and her room used to be my guest room before we got married.

My friends agree with me, but my husband says he needs “time to adjust.”

It seems like they have decided that coming to our house EVERY DAY to hang out is acceptable, which normally wouldn’t be a problem. But they come in, sit on our couch and don’t say a word to us. Their eyes are glued to their tablets or cellphones instead. They respond to our attempts at conversation with grunts, never looking up from their entertainment. They’ll stay for an hour or so, then leave.
