Immaculate Conception School holding hunger walk MORRIS – For the past 12 years, Immaculate Conception School and the Immaculate Conception Office of Religious Education have sponsored a hunger walk in November.

This year’s Hunger Walk will take place at 1 p.m. Nov. 15 at Immaculate Conception School and will offer both indoor and outdoor walking options of varying distances.

Late-season run ends for Redskins Angels capture Class 3A Lincoln-Way West title

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – If someone had told Morris volleyball coach Taylor Lafond when the postseason began that her team would be playing for a sectional title, she would have been more than happy.

And, even though the Redskins’ season ended Thursday night in a 25-23, 27-25 loss to Joliet Catholic Academy in the championship game of the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Sectional, she still found it tough to be anything but pleased with the way her team performed.

“We definitely made them earn it,” Lafond said after JCA won its ninth sectional crown in the past 13 years. “There was no giving up in our girls. They left it all on the floor.

“Still, we were that close.

Both games, we lost by the two points that you have to lose by.

We didn’t get blown out by any means, and I couldn’t be prouder of these girls.”

Senior Kaylin Korte ended her stellar Morris career with a match-high 17 kills to go with nine digs and two blocks while playing with a wrist that was injured in Tuesday’s win over top-seeded Providence Catholic. She finished the season with 534 kills, an average of 14.4 a match.

“It’s sad to see my high school career end,” she said.

“But I am so proud of the girls on this team. No matter what, we proved we belonged in this game. We were in the final 16 in the state, and every person on this team has a love and a passion for the game.”

Morris, which finishes with a 17-18-2 record and was seed-

ed 13th in the 22-team sectional, was trying to maintain the postseason magic that had seen the Redskins defeat No. 1 seed Providence Catholic, No. 4 Lincoln-Way West and No. 5 Chicago Christian en route to the title matchup with the No. 2 Angels.

They had it going early on, as Ashley Hood had two straight aces and Morris grabbed a 5-2 lead. The advantage grew to 13-6 on a kill by Veronica Johnson before JCA mounted a comeback. The Angels, who play Chicago De La Salle in Saturday’s’ Chicago Christian Supersectional, rallied to within 13-12 before two kills by Korte put Morris ahead 15-12. The Angels took their first lead at 16-15 before taking control late and moving out to a 24-20 lead on kills by Jessica Simon and Megan Cladis and a block by Addy Alt. Morris got to within 24-23 on a pair of kills by Janelle Brehm, but JCA scored the final point to take Game 1.

In the second game, Morris again held an early lead. A block by Ryan Friend and Calleen Soper made it 6-3. After a tie at 10, Morris went on a 4-0 run on Brehm’s serve, getting two kills by Korte in the stretch.

JCA pulled to within 15-14, but Morris went ahead 20-17 on a Korte kill.

Then, Cladis took over for the Angels, using the tip kill to get two straight points. JCA then got kills from Taylor Zurliene and Simon to tie it at 22 before Korte had kills to give Morris leads of 23-22 and 2423. Zurliene tied it at 24 with a kill before a ball that originally was ruled a kill by Korte was changed to a point for JCA. Morris tied it on a block by

“We played Morris earlier in the year and won by a pretty good amount,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “But even watching them then, I knew they had the potential to take out some teams. We knew they were playing real hot right now and we certainly didn’t overlook them.

“We noticed that there was an opening for us to tip the ball against them, and our girls kept doing it until they stopped it. We’ll take a point any way we can get it. You don’t have to pound the ball down every time. It just has to get down. I think our experience showed tonight. A lot of these girls have been in big matches like this.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Capturing their program’s first sectional championship since 1999 was a tall enough task for Minooka’s girls volleyball team Thursday.

But having to defeat Lincoln-Way North in the final match on its court as it pursued its initial sectional title in the sport proved to be too big of a challenge for the Indians.

The Phoenix certainly went out in style and demonstrated why they are deserving of their Class 4A sectional’s top seed, claiming a 25-19, 25-16 victory over Minooka.

North (35-3) advances to Saturday’s Normal West Super-sectional, where it meets Normal, which won 25-13, 25-23 over O’Fallon in the Springfield Sectional final.

Minooka (28-11), which was playing in its first sectional finals since 2011, led 8-6 in the first set, but only could force four ties in the opener and then trailed throughout the finale.

“They tore our serve-receive apart and then it just kind of brought everybody down,” Indians coach Carrie Prosek said.

“Those two outside hitters really tore us apart. We have big blocks, but they got around them. She (coach Mary Brown) did a very nice job of scouting us.

“Our goal was to just have a successful season with me being new, and when we won regionals, they were so excited. Our four seniors, Ginger (Perinar), Emily (Hise), Maddie (Alessio) and Sydney (Arlis) did a great job with their leadership. This is a stepping stone for this program. Getting farther than this will be our future goal with these kids.”

The Indians claimed a pair of early two-point leads in the opening set after kills by Alli Papesh (seven kills) and still were tied at 16 when North used a 5-0 spurt to take control. “We knew that they were going to be one of the best teams that we played this year,” Hise said. “They were all-around a great team in the front row and back row, but so are we.

“I wasn’t expecting much for HOME DECOR this year, but when everyone AND MORE showed up at summer camp, I was blown away by the amount of talent we had and knew that we could go far this year. We were all so close and I loved everyone’s personalities and we just clicked. The last two years we went a step farther, so in the next few years, this team is going to go really far.”

South took that trick, cashed his diamonds, discarding two spades and one heart from dummy, then attacked hearts. West could win with his ace and take two club tricks, but declarer had the balance.

GRUNDY COUNTY DISPOSITIONS MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland recently released the following felony dispositions.

The state’s attorney’s office often reaches plea agreements in cases following a careful consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a thorough consultation with the crime victim, a review of the offender’s criminal history, and weighing aggravating and mitigating factors that exist, according to a news release from Helland’s office.

• Devin Appelo 28, of Willits, California, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to six days in the county jail. Appelo was placed on second chance probation for two years and must submit to random drug testing. Appelo must complete substance abuse counseling.

• Shaun Cailey, 27, pleaded guilty to domestic battery, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to 30 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

• Joshua Cortez, 21, of Verona, pleaded guilty to burglary to a motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, and was sentenced to 180 days in the county jail and was placed

After resenting being alive, lead character George Bailey learns many people would have much different lives – for the worse – if he never existed.

In downtown Morris, the iconic holiday motion picture’s theme of how one can positively affect someone else’s life, especially during the holiday season, materializes in the form of gift-giving.

The Morris Retail Association has united for several years to achieve that goal with the “It’s a Wonderful Life” open house circuit. This year’s series, which is a group effort within the retail association, started Thursday and runs each weekend until Dec. 5.

“It brings more people in town because there are so many open houses at the same time,” said Stacey Olson, co-owner of True North.

“They’re not just driving here for one store, they drive in for all of them.”

Each weekend, a group of downtown stores will welcome as many shoppers as possible for a variety of holiday-themed goods and specials. Up first is Deluca’s Hallmark, Ruby Begonia’s, The Paper Co., True North, True North: The Warehouse and Whimsy, which are holding their respective open houses through Sunday.

As “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” played Thursday morning in Ruby Begonia’s, co-owners Jessica Bradley and Sheila Pearcy said the next two months really are the most wonderful time of the year for shoppers and retailers.

“So many people seem to be in a festive mood,” Pearcy said.

Although some customers are caught a bit off-guard with Christmas-themed displays before Thanksgiving, it has a benefit for shoppers and retailers. For people who want to shop early, particularly for decorations, kicking off the holiday shopping in early No-

We Care seeking more applications for holiday assistance

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County is hopeful it will get more applications from low-income families who need assistance this holiday season.

The nonprofit’s annual “Adopt-A-Family” program helps families in need by providing Christmas gifts for their children and food for their holiday meal.

Last Christmas, 878 children from 367 low-income families received gifts under their tree with the help of 63 organizations and individuals in Grundy County. In 2013, 706 children from 287 families were helped. We Care Executive Director Eric Fish-

er expects that total to be in line with previous years, but wants to make sure that is the case. Applications will be accepted until Nov. 13.

The program has been a success for about a decade, according to Fisher, who said the kind nature of the community is at the root of the prolonged success.

“Grundy County is a big-hearted community,” Fisher said. “There’s a lot of good people here, and during the holiday season there’s that extra bit of charitability in the air.”

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and pre-

scription assistance.

For the “Adopt-A-Family” program, families must fill out an application and provide We Care with proof of residency and of their income for the previous 30 days. We Care thoroughly screens each applicant for income eligibility.

Applicants are then placed in the pool of families available for “adoption.” Organizations and individuals who want to help families in need contact We Care to “adopt” those families and do their best to fulfill the families’ needs.

Individual donors or organizations notify We Care the size of family they want to assist during the holidays.

Fisher said sometimes that’s one family, and sometimes a

church or business will say it wants to assist several families.

“Christmas is a time of joy and giving, but sometimes, there is also the added stress of making ends meet, paying soaring utility bills and even putting food on the table,” Fisher said. “It can leave a family feeling the strain. But they don’t have to feel alone.

We Care is here to help and holiday assistance is available.”

The holiday season, like

many other areas of work, is the busiest time of year for We Care as staff, and volunteers do their best to ensure an enjoyable holiday for those in need.

“It’s our busiest time of year and ‘Adopt-A-Family’ is a very important part of our program,” Fisher said.

Coal City School District 1 approves tentative levy The tentative tax rate for the district will be $3.19 for every $100 of property value

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Members of the Coal City Community Unit School District 1 board unanimously approved Wednesday night the district’s tentative 2015 levy.

School districts file tax levies to make sure they capture all available property tax dollars once the actual Equalized Assessed Value, or EAV, is determined. A large portion of school district budgets are based on local property taxes.

The proposed total levy for 2015, which is payable in 2016, is $24.38 million, which is about a 1 percent decrease when compared to the total received from the 2014 tax levy, according to Superintendent Kent Bugg.

The proposed tax rate for levy year 2015 – which is for the 2015-16 academic year – is $3.19 for every $100 of property

value.

“The tentative levy includes a bond and interest payment of $3.13 million,” Bugg said Thursday. “When we reached an agreement with Exelon for their Dresden Station property, we told the taxpayers their rate would be $3.19, and it is $3.19.”

Bugg said the way it works for his district is there is an agreement in place with Exelon which allows the district to know what it will get from that property for another three years.

He said the district will more than likely lose some EAV values because of the June 22 tornado, but officials don’t have final EAV numbers in.

“It’s a little up in the air. We hope to have final numbers in by the December final levy,” he said.

Bugg said the district will

be able to operate without cuts with the levy presented.

In other action, the board heard a report on the backpack program, which provides children from low-income families with food to eat on the weekend.

The program is run by three parents, Sara Smith, Cherie Sieger and Pam Carlton, who took it over after the Coal City Clothes Closet closed down in 2014.

The report showed the program serves 132 low-income students each week. The organization fills backpacks with food to help those students who qualify for free lunch and sends them home each Friday. On Monday, students return the empty backpack to the school.

Bugg said the program serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The program served 123 students each week last year.

First Presbyterian Church of Morris to hold Holiday Fair for youth mission trips MORRIS – No matter what is on your holiday shopping list, First Presbyterian Church of Morris hopes to have it available Saturday at its annual Holiday Fair.

The money raised from the event goes to the youth group that goes each year on a mission trip with Reach Mission Trips, a Christian organization that helps repair homes for those in need in the United States.

“Our youth group has been going on mission trips for 17 years,” said Rose Grossi, coordinator for the youth group.

“They find people who need repairs to their home or if a person becomes disabled and needs a ramp but can’t afford to have it built, the youth groups do it.”

“We make smaller quilted items like table runners or placemats, and we have denim tote bags we’ve made from blue jeans we’ve taken apart,” Rund said. “We’re hoping to get a lot of foot traffic on Saturday.”

Grossi said vendors include local artists and crafters, as well as vendors such as Scentsy and 31.

In addition to the vendors, the youth group will be selling Scrip Cards, a product they offer year-round to those in the community. Scrip Cards are gift cards to various stores, restaurants, hotel chains and cruise lines.

Grossi said they get a percentage of each card they sell while those purchasing them get full face value of what they spend.

“It’s a way to donate without giving us money directly,” she said.

Grundy County area hosts Veterans Day events SHAW MEDIA Since the armistice that ended World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, Veterans Day has stood as an opportunity for the United States to remember and recognize American veterans of all generations.

As has become a tradition in Grundy County, events will be held throughout the county all across the country to recognize neighbors, friends and family that are proud to call themselves veterans.

Here are some of the Grundy County community events, provided by the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission, scheduled to recognize veterans: • The Mazon American Legion will hold its Veterans Day program at 5 p.m. Sunday at the

Legion, 508 Depot St. in Mazon.

• The Community Veteran’s Day Program, sponsored by the Coal City Public Library District, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the auditorium at Coal City High School, 655 W Division St. in Coal City, starting with a ceremonial flag raising.

Special Honors will be rendered to 10 World War II veterans from the area. Music provided

by Coal City High School Madrigals, and guest soloist Sharon Hawkinson.

• The Minooka community is recognizing Veterans Day with events at each building in the Minooka grade schools. Contact your school for more details.

The Minooka American Legion Post is participating in these events in cooperation with the schools.

• Cookies Restaurant is sponsoring a veterans luncheon at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Reservations are required, please call Cookies at 815-4676667 or Dave Corbin at 815-6939162 to reserve your seat.

• The Morris American Legion will host the annual Veterans Day parade and observance Wednesday. The parade will start about 10:30 a.m. at Chapin Park and end at the Grundy County Courthouse, where an observance will be held at 11 a.m. The public is welcome to participate in the parade, just be at the park by 10:15 a.m. In the event of inclement weather the observance will be at the high school.

• Saratoga School and Immaculate Conception School are hosting Veterans Day as-

• The Gardner community is hosting an annual Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m.

Patricia Lynne Terry, age 71 of Gardner, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born June 13, 1944, in Morris, Patricia Lynne was a daughter of the late Robert and Arline (McDonald) Christensen. She was raised in

the Dwight area, and attended the Danish School south of Gardner and later Dwight grade school. She was a graduate of Seneca High School and continued her education in nursing at Silver Cross School of Nursing.

On February 1, 1964, Lynne married Stephen Leonard Terry in Morris and he preceded her in death on April 24, 2014. Lynne worked most of her life in nursing and held employment over the years at LaSalle Peru Hospital and Morris Hospital.

She was the director of nursing at Continental Manor in Dwight and later retired as a nurse case manager with Hartford Insurance Company. Lynne was an active member of United Lutheran Church in Gardner, where she was involved with the ULC Women’s Group.

Lynne also belonged to the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed needlepoint, cross stitch and crocheting, and took pleasure in gardening and her flowers. Lynne will most be remem-

bered for her love of cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Patti (Frank) Sistek of South Wilmington, Matt (Lori) Terry of Braidwood and Leslie Fatlan (Tim Tresch) of Hollister, California; (14) grandchildren, Emily Smith of South Wilmington, Mandi (Aaron) Smith of Cornell, Zach Sistek and Mitch (Mallory) Sistek, both of South Wilmington, Jade Urban of Braidwood, Kristin Terry (Jason Durkin) of Morris, Teagan Urban (Brandon Phillips) of Coal City, Matthew Terry and Kiley Terry, both of Braidwood, Brian (Jill) Fatlan of Mazon, Bruce (Beth) Fatlan of Braceville, Michelle (Kris) Foster of Brevard, NC, and Kayla Tresch and Tyler Tresch, both of Hollister, CA; (18) great grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Natalie Smith, Christopher Smith, Leah Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Daniel Smith, Layla Sistek, Cameron Durkin, Dylan Fatlan, Devon Fatlan,

Jefferson St. in Gardner from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service 10:00 a.m. Pastor Jana Howson will officiate and burial will follow in Gardner Prairie Cemetery, where both Lynne and Stephen will be laid to rest.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Lynne’s memory to United Lutheran Church in Gardner or to American Diabetes Association.

Police: Gliniewicz tried to ‘put a hit’ on administrator, had cocaine in desk

Joseph Gliniewicz requested a meeting with a motorcycle gang member to “put a hit” on the village administrator he feared would discover his years of embezzling, an investigator said Thursday.

Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Chris Covelli said Gliniewicz in April asked someone to set up a meeting with the high-ranking gang member with the intended target being Village Administrator Anne Marrin. The messages, which were later deleted, came shortly after officials said Marrin had started auditing the city’s assets and finances, including those of Fox Lake Explorer Post 300.

The unnamed person told police in an interview that Gliniewicz made the request for a hit on Marrin in conversation, not over text or other messages, Covelli said. The gang member, who Covelli also would not name, denied talking to Gliniewicz.

Covelli said Marrin was unaware of Gliniewicz’s plot as it unfolded.

“She didn’t know any of this until he was dead,” Covelli said.

Gliniewicz, 52, was shot and killed Sept. 1 after he radioed he was investigating three suspicious men. His death sparked a massive manhunt and left the community in mourning over the revered officer affectionately known as “G.I. Joe.” Gliniewicz decided to carefully stage his suicide to look like a homicide after months of pressure his “extensive crimes” would be discovered, investigators said.

Covelli also said investigators also found cocaine in Gliniewicz’s desk drawer when they searched it the week of

his death. The cocaine was not associated with any cases that investigators could find, Covelli said.

In one message released Wednesday, Gliniewicz wrote, “MANY SCENARIOS from planting things volo bog!!” [sic].

“Was he going to use the cocaine to do that,” Covelli said, “we don’t know.”

ference Wednesday spoke briefly after investigators revealed the circumstances surrounding Gliniewicz’s death. She mentioned the threatening statements, but stood strong behind the inquiries that apparently had angered Gliniewicz.

“When I heard that he was concerned that I was asking tough questions about the explorer program, it only confirmed to me that asking the tough questions was absolutely right,” Marrin said.

Officials said Gliniewicz had discretion over finances for the group, which is designed to expose youths from 14-21 to law enforcement and is funding mainly through donations and fundraisers.

Gliniewicz also forged documents to obtain federal surplus equipment for the program, Covelli said.

The day before his death, Gliniewicz sent a message to

former Police Chief Michael Behan lamenting the imminent review, messages revealed Wednesday show. Behan had resigned days earlier after an unrelated investigation into his and another officer’s actions in December.

“She now has demanded a complete inventory of exploder [sic] central and a financial report...FML.” Authorities also are investigating his wife, Melodie, and one of his sons, D.J., as well, an official said Thursday. Melodie Gliniewicz helped her husband run the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post.

The official, who was briefed on the investigation, spoke with the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Covelli refused to identify anyone involved in the investigation other than Gliniewicz.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the Lake County State’s Attorney is reviewing the case. The FBI also is investigating another component of the case, Covelli said.
