BRACEVILLE – The Braceville referendum for a tax increase to construct a new fire station failed for a second time Tuesday.

The referendum has gone to the voters twice now and has been defeated both times.

With 2 of 2 precincts reporting, there were 124 yes votes and 171 no votes, according to unofficial election results posted to the Grundy County website. It was defeated 76 to

Kristina dearly loved her grandchildren, and enjoyed watching them play sports and attending all their activities. She loved to travel with her husband, and did so for 18 years, and enjoyed meeting new people in her travels. She was an avid pinochle and cribbage player.

Fire Chief Nate Basham said the district’s current facility at Braceville’s community center, which it rents from the village, is not sufficient to hold the equipment the district has or for other needed equipment.

The fire district has been housed in the village’s center for more than 50 years.

“We’ll stay housed in the current fire house for now,” Basham said.

District Trustee Randy Berry said the board will try the referendum for a third time in the spring. If it is voted down again, the district will have to wait two years before it can try again.

“We have to do a better job going door to door and letting our residents know the situation,” Berry said.

Residents were asked to allow the district to issue $600,000 in bonds to build and equip a new station. The referendum would have increased taxes by $100 for ev-

ery $100,000 of assessed property value, and would do so for 20 years, according to the district.

Berry said the cost to build a new building is far less than if the district had to close its doors, which would cause homeowner’s insurance to go up, as well as the cost of contracting in services from another area fire department.

The district already has purchased 2.25 acres on the north side of the village along Division Street, where the fire station would be constructed.

Grundy County Clerk MORRIS – Grundy County’s newly elected officials – some familiar and some new faces – will take office Dec. 1.

In Tuesday’s General Election, Kay Olson, D-Morris, was elected Grundy County Clerk; Lori Werden, R-Morris, was Kay Olson elected as Grundy County Treasurer; and Sheriff Kevin Callahan, D-Morris, retained his position, according Lori Werden to unofficial voting results from the Grundy County Clerk’s Office.

Voters came out in large number, compared to other Kevin elections, with Callahan 55 percent of registered voters casting ballots. Early in the day Tuesday, Grundy County Clerk Lana

Olson is the current chief deputy clerk in the Grundy County Clerk’s office and has worked within the clerk’s office for the last 11 years.

She won the county clerk seat with 8,415 votes, according to the unofficial results. Her opponent Mary Michael Roth, R-Morris, received 7,755 votes.

Grundy County Treasurer Werden, an office manager for Donico Inc. in Morris, said she plans to work with elected officials and leaders to reduce taxes and spending and increase accountability in the treasurer’s office.

Channahon trustees OK money for local business

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon village trustees this week approved footing a low-interest loan of no more than $36,447 to a local restaurant to help the business update its infrastructure.

Lonestar Restaurant & Lounge owner Themis Sparagis said the building is currently on a septic system, and he is “looking to the future,” wanting to connect to village sewage. The costs, though, are large. Construction is estimated to come in at $30,274; the tap-on fee will be $3,768; and the recapture amount is $12,404, bringing the total to lay and connect the pipes to $46,447.

In the loan agreement, Sparagis agreed to contribute an im-

mediate $10,000 to the costs and repay the loan over a period of five years at an interest rate of 1.8 percent.

Lonestar is a stable, longtime business in Channahon, Village President Joe Cook told trustees at Monday’s village board meeting, and the village is in a position to give the loan.

Cook said the restaurant’s needs were immediate, and the business has given much to the community over the years.

“There’s no giveaway here,” Cook said. “They’ll pay the fees. ... It will keep them in a position where they can stay viable.

Their internal infrastructure is very, very old. ... This is an investment of a loan.”

After the meeting, Cook said this is the first time the village has loaned money to a private business, although it has with

homeowners through block grants.

Two trustees said they didn’t like the precedent of loaning out taxpayers’ money without particular guidelines in place.

Trustee Missey Schumacher said she would vote to approve the loan, because Lonestar has been a supporter of the community, but she said the village should set parameters now for any future considerations.

Trustee Scott McMillin was the only trustee to vote against the measure, saying there were too many unanswered questions about how far the village was willing to go to lend for infrastructure improvements.

Grundy board vice chair puts name in for chairman

By JESSICA BOURQUE Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Just one day after the general election, former Grundy County Board Vice Chairman David Welter declared his desire to become the next county board chairman.

The 23-year-old Republican is the first known board member to express interest in the position.

“At this point, with the chairman leaving, I see this as a great opportunity to bring my vision for the county forward. I think I have the ability, leadership and negotiating skills to lead the county effectively,” Welter said Wednesday afternoon.

One of the first tasks for the newly-assembled Grundy County Board will be selecting the next county board chairman through a voting process.

The vote will be taken Dec. 1, and whichever candidate wins the majority of the board’s votes will become chairman.

Previous board chairman Ron Severson did not re-run for the board this year. He retired from the board after 12 years of service. Severson ran against state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield for the 75th District in the primary, but lost.

Grundy County Republican Party Chairman Mike Mattingly said the Republican board members will hold a caucus to officially nominate their choices for chairman and vice chairman. He was unsure when that vote would take place.

“Typically, the Republican board members will have a caucus, but I don’t know when that will be,” Mattingly said.

In other business, the council also approved the removal of 32 cottonwood trees at the Morris Municipal Airport by Homer Tree Service of Lockport for $9,800.

The tree removal is part of the Morris Airport runway extension project, which will allow larger aircraft to take off and land at Morris airport.

When completed, the runway will be 5,500 feet long.

Kopczick said the trees need to come down to allow for a clear approach to the runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The fee includes chipping, logging and removal of trees.

MORRIS – The city of Morris can now fine individuals who do not properly clean up reserved park shelters.

The Morris City Council approved Monday an amendment to park shelter reservation forms, allowing the city to fine people reserving a shelter if appropriate clean up is not done after an event.

“Locally, we have good luck,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday. “But we do have a few who fail to realize it is still in a city park, and they leave it trashed.”

After the meeting, McMillin said he supported the particular business in question, but his

vote was a reflection of wanting to be a good steward of taxpayers’ dollars.

“People who vote for us expect us to use this money wisely,” he said. “We don’t need to decide this on a case-by-case basis. ... There is no program set up for this. Nothing has ever been set up for this.”

There is a chance Welter could be the party’s top selection.

Welter was elected to the county board four years ago, at age 19, and spent the last two years as Severson’s vice chairman.

He is significantly younger than his fellow board members, and if selected, would be the youngest Grundy County Board Chairman in recent history.

Welter said his age has not impeded his ability to serve on the board and is confident it will not be an issue if he is elected chairman.

“Really, I think I’ve gained a lot of people’s attention and respect,” Welter said. “I usually come to the table of my meetings with the facts, and I present them in, what I think, is a non-biased manner. To do that, it doesn’t matter what your age is. I think people will respect you for that.”

Welter’s “vision” for Grundy

County involves streamlining the county’s rules and processes. He said he would look to other surrounding counties to see where Grundy may be able to improve.

He said politics at the county board have “bogged down” some of the processes, and he would focus on building a bipartisan coalition to help eliminate the underlying political motives.

To Welter, who has a fulltime job, being chairman would mean taking more of a hands-off approach to running the county board.

“I see the county board chairman as someone who more or less sets policy and not necessarily the day-to-day operations of the county. That’s what the administrator is for – or that’s what we’ll find an administrator for,” he said.

The county is without a county administrator after Heidi Miller recently resigned.

No Democrat board members had expressed interest in the chairman position as of Wednesday.

Anthony was Martha appointed to the Shugart 75th District seat after former state Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, resigned because she was moving out of state.

He was a Kendall County sheriff’s deputy before he was appointed to the 75th seat.

“We had to overcome a lot of obstacles in this campaign; but the most important thing we learned is that the families of the 75th District share our concern for our kids’ future and support our vision of limited government, lower taxes, individual freedom and protection of our constitutional liberties,” Anthony said in a speech Tuesday night to family and friends at a gathering at Chapin’s East in Minooka.

Anthony’s opponent, Shugart, is a registered nurse, and has worked for more than 25 years at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. She served as an alderwoman for the city of Morris for four years. Shugart is a single mother of three daughters, and a grandmother, and a lifelong Grundy County resident.

Shugart did not immediately return calls Wednesday seeking comment. A post on the “Friends of Martha Shugart” Facebook page read, in part, that the campaign “knew the challenges of our race and did

our best to get the message out to the voters with what little resources we had at our disposal.

“Our campaign would like to thank all of our supporters for all that you have done on Martha’s behalf but as the statewide results show, mid-term elections are historically tough,” the post continued.

Next steps Anthony said the first thing he wants to address in Springfield is eliminating any talk of making the temporary tax – which was approved during the 2011 veto session and set to expire in January 2015 – a permanent one. His other top priority is addressing school funding.

“Those are two issues, that if passed, will change the face of the state,” Anthony said Wednesday.

Anthony also is filing House Resolution 1303, a resolution to honor the late Grundy County Sheriff Terry Marketti, who died in December 2012. The resolution is to honor his service to his community as both an elected official and for his service on local charity boards.

“We realized there was never a resolution for Terry Marketti and we really want to honor his time in service,” Anthony said.

Anthony also said he wants to earn the trust and support of the nearly 14,000 voters who didn’t vote for him.

“We don’t have to agree on every issue,” Anthony said.

“Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or Libertarian, I have an open door and I want to hear from the residents of my district on what issues concern them. When my time in elected office is done, I want to be known as a statesman, not a politician.”

In one of the county’s hottest contested race, Sheriff Callahan beat his opponent, Ken Briley, R-Minooka, with 8,780 votes to Briley’s 7,587 votes, according to the unofficial results.

Callahan has spent the past three decades with the sheriff’s department, beginning as a patrol deputy in 1983. He advanced to patrol sergeant and later to a lead investigator. In 2004, he was appointed to Chief Deputy Sheriff, serving under former Sheriff Terry Marketti.

He was appointed sheriff after Marketti’s untimely death.

“I’d like to say I’m very proud of all the people who supported me,” Callahan said Tuesday night. “I’m very humbled by their support.”

Cooperation will be key for Rauner Illinois voters have spoken, and they have elected a new governor in Illinois.

Bruce Rauner defeated Gov. Pat Quinn.

Come January, a Republican will hold the state’s top office for the first time since 2003, when the now-imprisoned Rod Blagojevich took office from George Ryan, who was released from imprisonment in 2013.

The result shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, even in blue-state Illinois.

Quinn’s more than five years in office have been a failure in policy and leadership.

Illinois is bleeding jobs. Illinois has the worst credit rating of any state in the nation. Illinois also has a worst-in-the-nation public pension deficit of $100 billion.

Deadbeat state government owes social service agencies, school districts and other employers about $5 billion for work completed months ago. Illinois’ worker’s compensation costs are fourth-worst in the U.S., driving businesses and jobs elsewhere.

Voters sent the message that they’re tired of the same old fiscal policies of tax and spend.

Enter Rauner. His policies of lower taxes and smaller government give the state hope. The successful Winnetka businessman now has his work cut out for him. He’s promised to shake up Springfield and significantly elevate our state’s dismal standing.

He must deliver.

Rauner is in the spotlight and will have to prove he has the savvy and political ability to turn this state around. And for that to happen, it’s going to take Rauner to work with the Democrats who run the General Assembly – House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton.

Gridlock will not solve our problems.

Rauner recognizes that. So much so that he called Madigan and Cullerton on Tuesday before giving his victory speech.

“I said to them, ‘This is an opportunity for us to work together. This is an opportunity for us to come together on a bipartisan basis,’ ” Rauner said on stage during this victory speech.

For Rauner to accomplish anything, working together will be paramount.

We’ve seen how savvy Rauner the candidate can be. Now we need to see how effective Rauner the governor can be.

It was at that moment that the gunshot-like sounds we had just heard made sense, and a long night began for what would seem like every law-enforcement agent in New Jersey.

That first Monday in November last year ended in the early hours of Tuesday, when 20-year-old Richard Shoop was found in a remote part of the Garden State Plaza with a self-inflicted gunshot to his head.

I think of him often, not just because I had been just a few yards away from him that night, but because the agony he must have been living through was not his alone. Richard Shoop was battling some demon, whether it was clinical depression or the dark choices we can so often hellishly settle for when the lights of faith, hope and love have all seemed to fade.

As October 2014 wrapped up, Pope Francis talked about the devil.

The headline on the Vatican’s news page Thursday summed it up: “Pope: Christian life is a continuous battle against the devil.” Pope Francis talks about mercy and joy, but he also talks about the devil. This matters because the devil is in the details of so many of our most contentious debates.

Acknowledging that would help us see clearer and make progress.

As a moral shepherd in confusing times – during which we have unprecedented communication opportunities and technologies, and yet a fractured ability to truly communicate, even among those who speak the same tongue – he is trying to get us to go deeper, to see the full

context of our lives.

Even as another scurrilous election season brings claims that seeking to protect innocent human life and religious liberty is akin to waging a “war on women,” real oppression exists.

The media doesn’t only miss the point on matters of faith when it comes to reporting on Pope Francis.

Asked about the recent Synod of Bishops on the Family, Philadelphia’s Archbishop Charles Chaput said, “I think confusion is of the devil, and I think the public image that came across was of confusion.”

That was reported as Chaput having blasted the synod as being of the devil.

Oy. Chaput also said: “None of us are welcome on our own terms in the Church; we’re welcome on Jesus’ terms. That’s what it means to be a Christian – you submit yourself to Jesus and his teaching, you don’t recreate your own body of spirituality.”

And that’s the case whether we’re debating poverty or marriage. It’s not “sides” we should be comfortable on, but conformity to all that is good,

Life is about so much more than our clever ideas or finding our way on our own.

The devil is in the distractions, in the indifference they breed and the way they keep us from being on guard for evil in our midst in even the most subtle and mundane ways.

The examined life helps us see clearer what’s happening, not just when faced with a man with a rifle in a mall, but before he ever gets to that point, so that we might help him confront the damned devil head-on. The more people on guard, the less lost we are. Seeing what is right before our eyes helps us with diagnosis, prescription, healing and prevention. The road to hell, meanwhile, is paved with indifference and euphemistic delusions, distractions and discouragement.

It’s funny what a winning streak can to do a team’s frame of mind.

When the Morris football team was 2-4, there was more than a little worry around the camp. Now, after winning their final three games to qualify for the Class 5A playoffs and knocking off unbeaten Normal U-High in the first round on the road, the Redskins are brimming with confidence heading into Saturday’s second-round matchup with perennial powerhouse Mahomet-Seymour.

The Redskins host the Indians (8-2), with the game kicking off at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“The kids have their confidence back,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “They are pretty loose at practice, but, at the same time, they are focused on the game ahead. We know it isn’t going to be easy. Mahomet-Seymour is a good team.

When you get to the final 16 in the playoffs, there are no easy games.”

Morris upended Normal U-High, 21-14, last week, and Mahomet-Seymour is a member of the same Corn Belt Conference. U-High beat Mahomet-Seymour in Week 7, 21-20, in overtime. The Indians’ only

other loss was 60-34 to Mt. Zion in the opening week of the season.

“Their offense is pretty balanced,” Thorson said. “They do like to throw it a little bit. Their quarterback is very good, and they have two pretty good receivers. Their offensive line is big and athletic. We are going to have to continue to play good defense.”

Morris, meanwhile, had great success running the ball against Normal U-High, racking up more than 330 yards on the ground.

However, Thorson still believes there is room for improvement on that side of the ball.

“It’s weird,” he said. “We ran for more than 300 yards last week and I still feel like our offense didn’t have a great game. It was good, definitely, but I do feel like we can do better. Our passing game wasn’t as sharp as it could be, but our offensive line did a great job of opening up holes for our backs.

If we can continue to do that, we should be fine.

“Our defense was very good last week. Normal scored one of their touchdowns on a trick play and on the other one they caught us in a blitz. But, for the most part, the defense was out-

The Green Wave of St. Edward, Coal City’s next opponent in the IHSA Class 4A playoffs, have put up some staggering numbers this season. In compiling a 10-0 record, St. Edward has outscored its opponents 415-108.

Quarterback Joe Mullen is the trigger man for the explosive Green Wave, as he has completed 91 of 168 passes for 1,593 yards and 26 touchdowns against just eight interceptions.

He spreads the ball around to a quartet of receivers. Nick Duffy has a team-leading 22 receptions for 299 yards and eight touchdowns, while Petey DeWindt has caught 21 passes for 286 yards and two scores.

The Green Wave isn’t a one-dimensional, pass-only offense, however. Freshman running back Dwayne Allen has gained 1,541 yards and scored 18 touchdowns on the ground, including a 288-yard performance against Rock Is-

land Alleman in last week’s opening round 31-12 win.

“They can move the ball,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said. “Allen is a good back, and they have good team speed.

Their quarterback throws the ball well and they have some pretty good receivers. We are going to try and contain them

the best we can.

“They are pretty similar to Manteno [which beat Coal City, 24-23] in the way they run the spread. They aren’t as big as Manteno, but they have a lot of team speed.”

The Coalers have been displaying a high-powered offense of their own of late, outscoring their past two opponents 98-14, including a 40-14 win over Mendota in the first round last week.

The driving force in the Coal City attack is running back Jack Dibble, who has amassed 1,941 yards and 24 touchdowns on the ground this year behind the Coalers’ massive offensive line.

Quarterback Nick Micetich also gave future opponents something to think about last week when he ran for more than 100 yards and a TD. Micetich also has thrown for 456 yards.

“The best defense is when your offense is on the field,” Onsen said. “We want to control the clock with our run-

ning game and not turn the ball over. When you get to the second round of the playoffs, you have to be playing pretty good football.

“We are hoping that our size helps us. We’ll see how it goes and hope we can keep it going a little bit.”

The Coaler defense will be tested, but with players like Andrew Mathena up front, linebackers Parker Czaja and Matt Norton and sure-tackling defensive backs D.J. Budde and Corey Jurzak, the Green Wave might just hit a breakwater.

“We are pretty quick to the ball,” Onsen said. “We are going to have to continue to do that, and be good tacklers when we get there. The kids are looking forward to it. We like the matchup and the kids know they are playing well right now.

“They also know that if they lose, they are done.

There’s nothing to save anything for, so we are going to go out there and get after it.”

LAKE FOREST – For the first time in three months, Bears receiver Marquess Wilson practiced when the Bears began preparation for the Packers on Wednesday at Halas Hall.

Wilson fractured his collarbone at practice Aug. 4 in Bourbonnais and has been on the injured reserve list with a designation to return. By practicing, Wilson’s 21-day clock begins. The Bears have three weeks to decide to activate him, or to keep him on injured reserve.

“I feel pretty good,” Wilson said.“It felt good getting back in the swing of things and getting around the guys and actually practicing a little. I feel my wind was pretty good for the most part and just looking to improve each day I’m out here.”

Through eight games, the Bears’ offense is 19th in scoring, and outside Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, no other receiver has more than seven catches. Before his injury, Wilson spent minicamp and training camp as the clearcut No. 3 wideout.

As for a timetable, Wilson said he doesn’t know, but that he would love to play Sunday against the Packers.

Briggs said he felt good at practice Wednesday and enjoyed getting back into the swing of things as the firstteam linebacker, and where Bostic has the speed, Briggs will need to use his veteran instincts to help make plays for a Bears defense that certainly could use a turnover or two to upset the Packers.

Meanwhile, in Green Bay, the Packers were without both starting guards, T.J. Lang (ankle) and Josh Sitton (toe).

Rodgers, who injured his hamstring in their Week 8 loss to the Saints, was a full participant.

Wodehouse did not loaf later in life; he wrote incessantly. But the key word there is “five” -- look at this auction. What do you think of it?

I hope not a lot! First, perhaps North should have responded one notrump, but especially since he was a passed hand, one can understand two clubs. Now, though, South should not have rebid two spades. Never rebid in a five-card suit unless you have absolutely nothing better to do. Here, South, knowing his side did not have game values, should have passed over two clubs. (Agreed, he might have raised to three clubs, because on a better layout of the East-West cards, three no-trump would have been makable.)

Against two spades, West led the diamond seven, second-highest from a weak suit. East won with his king and returned a diamond. South won with his jack, cashed the spade ace (a questionable play), and led a low heart to dummy’s queen. East took the trick and inaccurately tried to give West a diamond ruff. (If South had four diamonds, he probably would have rebid two diamonds, not two spades.)

Declarer discarded his club eight, but then misguessed by finessing his club jack.

West won and gave his partner a club ruff. When East returned a heart, South won and played a trump, but West won, gave his partner another club ruff with his spade jack, and received a heart ruff in return for down two.

Dear reader: Yes, there is evidence – overwhelming evidence. And with this vaccine, the benefit is not that it will reduce the risk of a short-lived illness, like the flu. This vaccine will reduce your daughter’s risk of getting a common and life-threatening cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. The linkage of this virus to cancer, and the ability of a vaccine against the virus to reduce the risk of cancer, are solidly established. So much so, in fact, that the discovery of HPV’s connection to cervical cancer was honored with the Nobel Prize.

There are two different forms of the HPV vaccine, Cervarix and Gardasil. Both are safe and effective. The Cervarix vaccine protects against two HPV types, which cause 70 percent of cervical cancers.

The Gardasil vaccine protects against these two types as well as two others, which cause 90 percent of genital warts. Gardasil also has been shown to protect against cancers of the vulva, vagina and anus.

Vaccination is recommended for girls aged 11 to 12 years. But it may be given as early as age 9. The vaccine is also recommended for females 13 to 26 who did not get the vaccine earlier.

The vaccine is given as three injections over a six-month period. (Vaccination with Gardasil also is recommended for boys ages 11 or 12, to prevent anal cancer and genital warts.)

Based on conversations I’ve had with my pediatrician colleagues, I’d guess

Let’s start with safety.

Side effects are possible from any medical treatment, including vaccines. But extensive studies have shown that the HPV vaccine is safe for the vast majority of people.

You may also worry that getting the vaccine will give your daughter the green light to have sex. I’m not aware of any evidence that kids given this vaccine are more likely to have sex as teens than kids who aren’t given the vaccine.

This vaccine is about cancer, not sex. The idea is to give the vaccine well before any sexual activity -- and exposure to HPV -- begins.

The HPV vaccine has already had a big impact.

A study published in 2013 showed that since doctors began to routinely give the HPV vaccine in 2006, the occurrence of the cancer-causing HPV strains covered by the vaccine has dropped by 56 percent in girls ages 14 to 19 years.

Remember, though, that the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV. It is not an absolute guarantee against cervical cancer. As your daughter gets older, she still should get screened for cervical cancer even if she has the HPV vaccine.

The bottom line is that a series of three shots will protect your daughter from a form of cancer that can cause premature death.

That’s a gift any parent would want to give his or her child.
