Born: Jan. 30, 1931; in Morris, IL Died: Nov. 1, 2014; in Manteno, IL Robert Lee “Bob” Broderick, 83, of Morris passed away Saturday morning November 1, 2014, in the Veterans Home in Manteno, IL. Born January 30, 1931, in Morris, IL he was the son of the late James and Murial Lorraine (Bowers) Broderick.

Bob was raised and educated in Morris, attending the Morris Schools. At the age of 17, Bob joined service and became a United States Marine. During his service in the Corps Bob participated in combat operations against the North Korean forces in Korea. He was active in the assault and seizure of Inchon, Korea and the capture and securing of Seoul, Korea at which time Bob was surrounded and trapped until being rescued and freed by other Marines. He also

participated in the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign. Earning the rank of Corporal, Robert was honorably discharged on May 22, 1951.

Bob returned to Morris working for the Morris Paper Mill for over 20 years and continued his work with Self Lock for over 15 years until his retirement.

On June 4, 1955, Bob married Ellen Thompson in Morris and the two spent their life in Morris raising their family. Bob enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, gardening, puzzles and especially loved his family.

Surviving is his wife Ellen; three children, Robert (Kathy Hall) of Charleston, IL, Debra (Dave) Granzow of Bourbonnais, IL and Michael (Karen Carlson) of Morris; two grandchildren, Trever Broderick and Sarah Granzow; one great grandson, Gaven Broderick of Seneca; two sisters, Beverly (John) Winterbottom of Iowa and Betty of Ottawa; and one brother, Richard (Cathy) Broderick of Braceville, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 brothers, John, Jim and Bill.

In memory of Robert, memorials may be made to the Morris Color Guard of Morris.

Cremation Rites were accorded and Services will be held at a later date.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Voters in Grundy County took advantage of the mild weather to get out and cast their ballots Tuesday, with many polling locations reporting higher than average voter turnout.

Tammy Alvarez, an election judge at Morris 1 precinct, said by early Tuesday afternoon that precinct already had 178 voters – a higher number than seen in the past at that polling place, which is at the Morris Municipal Services Facility.

“We don’t have that number at the end of the day usually,” Alvarez said.

Norma Hedges, an election judge for Saratoga 1 precinct, said Tuesday evening that turnout was about 38 percent of registered voters, including early voters, in that precinct by 5:30 p.m. There have been several elections since she became judge where turnout in that precinct was only at 15 percent for the day, she said. The Saratoga 1 polling place was located in Saratoga Tower in Morris.

At the Morris Municipal Services Facility, people lined up to grab their paper ballot or wait for one of the electronic voting machines to open up.

“I vote in all of the elections,” Morris voter John Zebell said on Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday morning, Grundy County Clerk Lana Phillips predicted a 54 percent voter turnout for the election.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, with 40 of 40 precincts reporting in Grundy County, 13,912 people had voted, or 46.23 percent of the 30,095 registered voters had cast a ballot, according to unofficial vote totals.

“Generally, in the [general] election, we have 50 to 52 percent of the registered voters come out to vote,” she said.

“There is no excuse for someone not to cast a ballot.”

She said the county had 1,745 early voters, 223 in-person voters, and 112 grace period voters by noon Tuesday.

Absentee ballots mailed out totaled 783 with 731 returned as of Tuesday.

Phillips’ office fielded a few phone calls Tuesday and a few people showed up asking where their polling place was to vote, she said. Some took the opportunity to come in prior to and even on Election Day to update their registration and cast a ballot.

Callahan leads Briley in late sheriff race

By JESSICA BOURQUE Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – With about 70 percent of the precincts reporting as of deadline, Sheriff Kevin Callahan was in the lead to retain his seat at the Grundy County Sheriff.

“I feel good, but still not taking anything for granted,” Callahan said. “You never know until the final precinct comes in.”

With 40 precincts of 40 reporting, Callahan had 7,303 votes, leading Briley who had 6,428 votes.

“It’s kind of disappointing.

It looks like we are down by 700 votes right now,” Briley said at about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

“I’ll be hopeful until the last numbers come in.”

He advanced to patrol sergeant and later to a lead investigator for the department, investigating all manner of violent and nonviolent crime in Grundy County.

In 2004, he was appointed to Deputy Sheriff, serving under former Sheriff Terry Marketti.

In January 2013, after Marketti’s sudden death, the Grundy County Board appointed Callahan sheriff so he could fulfill the 22 months

remaining in Marketti’s term.

Briley is a Minooka resident and the Republican hopeful for the sheriff’s seat which has been held by a Democrat for more than three decades.

The Minooka resident’s career began in 1981, at age 18, when he took a job with the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Republican takes treasurer’s office, Democrats keep clerk’s office

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Republicans have taken over the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office and the Democrats have retained the Grundy County Clerk’s Office.

Lori Werden, R-Morris, won the Grundy County Treasurer’s position from incumbent Marcy Miller with 53 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Kay Olson, D-Morris, won the clerk’s position against Mary Michael Roth, R-Morris, with about 51 percent of the vote.

Before officially winning the election, Werden said she felt comfortable with the numbers.

“We got half the precincts in.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD JOLIET – A free physician-led clinic was recently awarded with a $10,000 grant through the AMA Foundation Healthy Communities/ Healthy America program.

The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic in Joliet will use the grant over the next two years to implement a lifestyle change program that is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program.

Will County has an obesity rate that is 10 percent higher than the state and national averages. The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic will use their grant to purchase a new diabetes testing machine, healthy cooking supplies for cooking classes, pedometers and other educational materials to be used during two 16-session diabetes management and prevention programs, according to a news release.

The AMA Foundation Healthy Communities/ Healthy America program

has awarded more than $1.3 million in grant funding to 68 free clinics throughout the United States to date. This year’s grants will support diabetes prevention and nutrition education projects.

The AMA launched its Improving Health Outcomes initiative in 2013 to focus on preventing type 2 diabetes, as well as cardiovascular disease – two of the nation’s leading causes of death and suffering.

75th House race results still coming in late Tuesday

John Anthony, a Republican from Plainfield, had 5,172 votes to the 4,070 of Martha Shugart, a Democrat from Morris, as of 9 p.m. That was with 26 of 86 precincts counted; the district also includes

communities in Kendall, LaSalle and Will counties.

Anthony, a husband and father of four children, said he grew up on the South Side of

Chicago and lived in Alsip and Champaign before settling in Plainfield.

He was a Kendall County sheriff’s deputy before he was appointed to the 75th District seat after former Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, resigned last year.

Shugart is a registered nurse, and has worked for more than 25 years at Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers. She served as an alder-

woman for the city of Morris for four years and ran unsuccessfully for a Grundy County Board seat.

Shugart is a single mother of three daughters, and a grandmother as well. She is a lifelong Grundy County resident and is a part of four generations of relatives living locally.

Anthony has said if elected, his three main issues for the term would be reforming the

The referendum asked Braidwood residents to pay an additional 0.2069 percent of their home’s equalized assessed value to help pay for a retirement fund the city has been supporting for the past 13

Braceville referendum BRACEVILLE – It was unclear Tuesday night if the referendum asking Braceville residents to approve a tax increase to construct a new firehouse would pass.

With 1 of 2 precincts reporting, there were 2 yes votes and there were 2 no votes, according to unofficial election results posted to the Grundy County website.

Braceville residents were asked to allow the district to issue $600,000 in bonds to build and equip a new station.

The district has already purchased 2.25 acres on the north side of the village along Division Street, where the fire station would be constructed.

The district’s current facility is Braceville’s community center, which it rents from the village and is not sufficient to hold the equipment they have or for other needed equipment, Fire Chief Nate Basham said previously.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris City Council voted this week to change a portion of the Morris Municipal Code to regulate where the city would allow marijuana cultivation centers and dispensaries to locate within the municipality.

The Morris City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve a zoning text amendment for the establishments, as recommended by the Morris Planning Commission.

“I think what the planning commission wants to do is get dispensaries as a conditional use permit,” said Bill Cheshareck, building zoning officer. “We can amend the ordinance in the

future if we need to, but right now a medical marijuana dispensary is under a drug store.”

By making such facilities get a conditional use permit, the applicants would have to get approval by the City Council, giving the council the final say in the locations.

A public hearing was held last week by the planning commission regarding the proposed amendment, Cheshareck said Tuesday. There was no public comment on the proposed ordinance.

The amendment addresses cultivation centers, which is a facility that is registered by the Department of Agriculture to grow and provide usable medical cannabis only to registered dispensing organizations.

It also addresses dispensary organizations, which are facilities registered by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulations to acquire medical cannabis from a cultivation center to dispense cannabis, paraphernalia or related supplies, and educational materials. These items can only be provided to registered patients under the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act. Under the new amendment a dispensary organization would fall under conditional permitted use in a Business-3 commercial zoning district or in a Business-4 commercial-recreation zoning district.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Morris currently

doesn’t have any businesses under strictly B-4 zoning, but it allows for businesses such as recreation facilities. The city has a lot of B-3 zoning along the Route 47 and Route 6 corridors, and includes establishments such as restaurants and stores.

A cultivation center would fall under conditional permitted use in an Manufacturing-1 zoning district, which is light manufacturing, and in areas such as Ashley Road.

Dispensaries must be 1,000 feet from schools, day care centers and any area zoned for residential.

Alderman Randy Larson voiced several concerns with the ordinance at Monday’s meeting, including asking if the council could change the ordi-

nance with the city imposing a 5,000-foot restriction on dispensaries.

“I’m not against medical marijuana,” Larson said. “I want the rules to be more stringent [than what the state mandates].”

Attorney Brad Nolden with City Attorney Scott Belt’s office said the state grants authority to the city, but it has to be reasonable and cannot prohibit the business opening in the city.

City Engineer Guy Christensen said after the meeting that extending it to 5,000 feet, which is roughly 3 miles from any school or child care center, would basically prohibit a dispensary from opening in city limits of Morris, which the state law prohibits.

The plunge is set for Jan. 3 at Heritage Harbor Marina, and the goal is to raise more than $100,000. Registration will begin at noon and the plunge begins at 2 p.m.

The kickoff to the 2015 Penguin Plunge is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Festivities Unlimited, and includes free appetizers and a cash bar and important announcements will be made. Those attending are asked to RSVP by calling 815-433-5000 or email tammyb@heritagharborottawa.com.

Participants in the plunge are asked to raise a minimum of $100 and take a dip into the Illinois River. They will receive an official Penguin Plunge long-sleeved T-shirt for their efforts. 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Have 2 large (10- or 12-inch) ovenproof nonstick skillets or well-seasoned cast-iron skillets ready.

2. Separate eggs, putting egg yolks into a large bowl and egg whites into a medium mixing bowl.

Add milk and vanilla to yolks. Whisk until smooth; then stir in flour, lemon zest and salt until smooth.

3. With clean beaters in the other bowl, beat egg whites on high speed until frothy. Gradually beat in granulated sugar until soft peaks form. Do not overbeat. Gently fold beaten whites into flour mixture just until streaks of white disappear. Do not overmix.

4. Heat the skillets over medium-high heat. Very lightly film the pans with oil. Reduce heat under skillets to low. Scrape batter evenly into skillets. It’ll be about 1 inch deep. Sprinkle each pan with raisins. Cook on low until bottoms are golden, about 3 minutes. Cut the 4 large eggs, separated pancakes into quarters; gently flip 1 ½ cups milk each piece so the uncooked side is ½ teaspoon vanilla on the bottom. Put the skillets into 1 ¼ cups flour the oven. Bake until puffed and Grated zest from 1 lemon golden on both sides, about 10 min1 ⁄8 teaspoon salt utes. (Recipe can be made up to 30 ¼ cup granulated sugar minutes in advance to this point.)

CHICAGO – On a recent vacation to Austria, I was bombarded with memories of my paternal grandparents. Hillary Clinton’s accidental insight When a politician commits a gaffe on the campaign trail, it’s usually an excuse for the news media to fire up the outrage machine. Every once in a while, however, a gaffe comes along that lets the truth out – however unintentionally.

Instead of another exercise in mockery and vitriol, it’s a teachable moment.

That’s what recently happened to Hillary Clinton.

Stumping for gubernatorial candidate Martha Coakley, Ms. Clinton let slip the kind of comment that can launch a thousand ships of criticism. “Don’t let anybody tell you that, you know, it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs,” she said.

Not long after, Ms. Clinton walked it back, of course.

“Our economy grows when businesses and entrepreneurs create good-paying jobs here in an America,” she explained, “where workers and families are empowered to build from the bottom up and the middle out — not when we hand out tax breaks for corporations that outsource jobs or stash their profits overseas.”

Still, Republicans like Jeb Bush pounced on her original remark. Certainly, a politico as polished and experienced as Hillary Clinton knows she’ll take her lumps even after making a clarification.

But Ms. Clinton’s poor phrasing accidentally revealed an important insight.

As Harold Meyerson observed at The Washington Post, some of the biggest businesses Ms. Clinton slammed are among America’s biggest banks – banks run by some of Ms. Clinton’s most reliable backers.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Yet there’s something about Ms. Clinton’s criticism that’s even more important than the hypocrisy that fact implies. When big corporations with close government ties fail to boost broad-based economic growth, including job growth, it’s not really because Republicans have lightened their tax burden.

A more significant factor is the way those corporations can game the regulatory system and benefit from political patronage.

Inside the bubble of cronyism, profits can be generated in a manner that the free market hardly gets to access.

It’s a problem that’s visible in some of America’s most important financial institutions. Just consider the stock market, where big corporations continue to make a killing, although the fundamentals of the economy, including hiring and job growth, continue to be weak.

Ms. Clinton doesn’t want to admit it, but the structural problems with crony capitalism can’t be boiled down to the “trickle-down economics” that defined the bygone Reagan era.

Back in the 1980s, the financial system was much less centralized than it is today. What’s more, government regulation of that system was simpler and more streamlined.

Now, layers of official and unofficial rules give banks, health care firms and other massive corporations ample opportunities to cash in on the buying and selling of access that defined our politics in the wake of – well, the presidency of Bill Clinton.

Rules when spending someone else’s dime SPRINGFIELD – I’ve never quite understood the mindset of people who live it up on someone else’s dime.

Whenever I’ve been on a business trip, I try to be frugal.

I don’t spend more than if I was paying for it myself.

It’s just the way I was raised.

Years ago, when I was a young reporter, editors used to snicker at my expense reports.

I’d stay at Travelodges and eat at McDonald’s.

When I became an editor, employees used to roll their eyes when I’d book rooms at Red Roof Inns and Motel 6s.

What’s the old saying? All hotel rooms look the same with the lights off.

Folks, it’s about stewardship.

When you’re spending someone else’s money, you have an extra responsibility to spend wisely.

I wish all of those who work for government had that mindset.

Some do. Many don’t.

Last month, city officials from across Illinois traveled to Chicago to attend the Illinois Municipal League Conference.

I filed Freedom of Information Act requests with about 20 municipalities throughout the state to see the expense reports city officials submitted for taxpayers to pay.

The Municipal League chose

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder to have its three-day conference at a Hilton Hotel in downtown Chicago.

A room there costs more than $200 a night.

In fairness to the city officials, they didn’t choose where the conference was to be held.

But they did choose to go.

And some chose to spend unwisely. Some city officials bought booze on the taxpayer dime. Others chowed down on prime rib.

But I looked for something a bit more wasteful: valet parking.

Some folks like to pay someone else to park their car. And that’s just fine – as long as they don’t expect taxpayers to pay for it.

Unfortunately, some city officials do. For example, Rock Island Alderman Katelyn Hotle spent $98 on valet parking for the three-day conference. On the other hand, Rock Island Mayor Dennis E. Pauley parked his own car and walked.

Good job, Dennis.

Over in Moline, the head honcho wasn’t so frugal. Moline City Administrator Lewis

Steinbrecher splurged – with taxpayer money – and opted for valet parking. But Moline City Attorney Maureen Riggs chose to park herself.

Steinbrecher said he used valet parking because he doesn’t know his way around Chicago well. Hotle did not respond to a request for comment.

Other communities in the state simply chose not to send anyone to the conference. East Moline was one of those communities.

Another was Kankakee.

“Due to budgetary cut backs any city elected officials or municipal employees wanting to attend the 2014 Illinois Municipal League Conference were to pay their own expenses. There would be no reimbursements for attending said conference,” said Kris Schmitz, a spokeswoman for the city of Kankakee.

Good for Kankakee.

At a time when many city governments are raising taxes and cutting services, it’s good to see some municipal officials embracing austerity – for themselves.

“I knew that it could be my last game ever,” Feiden said. “I went out there trying to have the game of my life. I just happened to be in the right spot on the extra point, but (assistant) coach (John) Courter had us in the right spots all day on defense.”

Feiden was far from done making a difference, though.

On the final play of the third quarter, Morris was driving, but faced a fourth-and-4 from the U-High 28. Griffin Sobol dropped back to pass, and Feiden looked like he was going to protect him from his

fullback position. However, he snuck past the rushing linemen and Sobol hit him for a nineyard gain that kept the drive alive. Five plays later, Walker scored his second touchdown of the game, giving Morris a 14-6 lead on a drive kept alive

by Feiden.

“That was a little delay route,” Feiden said. “I was patient and when I saw the linebackers go out to our other receivers, I just snuck out there and caught the pass.”

U-High tied the score on the next play from scrimmage, when they pulled off a hook-and-lateral play for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Morris had some chicanery

of its own up its sleeve, as the Redskins pulled off a fake punt from their own 31 to get a first down. The drive eventually reached the Normal U-High 19, where Feiden took a handoff up the middle and saw nothing but open field ahead. He sprinted into the end zone with the game-winning touchdown.

“That touchdown was amazing,” Feiden said. “Eric Haish and Zach Hansen made some awesome blocks and everything just opened up. When you see nothing but open field in front of you, it’s a hard feeling to describe. But you know you are going to score that touchdown that wins the game for your team. It’s just awesome.”

And when Morris didn’t have the ball, Feiden was instrumental in holding down the powerful U-High offense.

The Pioneers came into the game averaging 36 points a game, but Morris, with Feiden playing one of the linebacker spots, held them to 14.

“I think it was demoralizing to [U-High] when their offense drove the field on the opening drive and we stopped them.

Then, we just went right down the field and scored. We were pretty confident, even though we were 5-4 and they were 9-0.

“We feel like we are a different team than when we were 2-4. We have won four in a row now and we’re on a roll.”

MORRIS – For most of the 2014 season, the players on the Morris football team have been taking turns playing the starring role in each game. Most weeks, it’s been Jake Walker or Griffin Sobol or Keagan Sobol.

It’s natural that those players would be the ones to stand out a bit. They play the positions – quarterback, running back, receiver – that get a bulk of the statistics.

In Saturday’s 21-14 win over previously unbeaten Normal U-High, all three again played prominent roles. Walker scored twice, Griffin Sobol had a team-leading 109 rushing yards and Keagan Sobol jump-started the Redskins’ offense with a 46-yard run on their third offensive play.

Still, when Morris was in need of a big play, a play that could turn the tide of the game – and the season – it was Matt Feiden who was in the middle of the mix.

For most of the season, Feiden has been one of those lunchbox type of players, someone who just comes to work every day and does his job and doesn’t care if he gets the credit. As long as the team does well, he’s happy. And, he’ll do whatever he can to ensure that it does. He’s the type of player that coaches say, “I wish I had 11 Matt Feidens on either side of the ball.” On Saturday, Morris coach Alan Thorson was more than happy to have the one he does have.

“Matt does a bit of everything for us,” Thorson said.

“He hardly comes off the field. He’s not one of our captains, but he is a leader. And he’s a very vocal one. He has gotten better and better as the season has gone on. He’s the lead blocker on almost every touchdown run, and when it’s his turn to run it, he’s hard to bring down. And, on defense, he’s our leading or second-leading tackler.”

NORMAL – After pulling off one unlikely comeback, it looked like Minooka’s girls volleyball team was on the verge of staging an even more impressive rally.

Meeting defending sectional champion Normal Community in Tuesday’s Class 4A Normal Community Sectional semifinals, the Indians overcame a 23-18 deficit in the second set to force a decisive third game.

Minooka again trailed 21-17 in the finale but stormed back to set up match-points on two occasions before the Ironmen finally scored the final two points to hold on for a 25-19, 2325, 29-27 victory that advances the team to Thursday’s finals against Springfield.

“I told coach (Emily) Soto that in Game 2 we were done, but Jess Karalow stepped up and served it out and that was a miraculous comeback,” Indians coach Chris Hoelscher.

It’s time to give some midterm grades to the Bears’ coaching staff and front office.

As we all know, it already has been a tough few days for coach Marc Trestman, but there actually is a story here that I haven’t seen or heard anyone report yet.

Trestman is a member of the head coach’s class of 2013, and when you stack him up against his classmates, the results are disappointing at best.

Much has been made recently of the Bears choosing Trestman over Bruce Arians, but that really just scratches the surface of the decision authored by general manager Phil Emery.

Of the six new head coaches last season, only Trestman inherited a winning club in the 10-6 Bears. After a 2-14 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars tabbed Gus Bradley as their guy, and the Kansas City Chiefs went after Andy Reid after a 2-14 campaign of their own.

The Philadelphia Eagles were 4-12 in 2012, causing them to wave goodbye to Reid and bring in Chip Kelly.

Arizona had a 5-11 season in 2012, and although they were the last to fill their head coaching job, they still were

able to hire the reigning NFL Coach of the Year in Arians.

Buffalo’s answer to a 6-10 season was Doug Marrone, and the Chargers followed a 7-9 season by adding Mike McCoy. In spite of being given the best team at the time, other than Bradley, Trestman has produced the worst results.

While the Bears went backward from 10-6 to 8-8, Kelly, Reid and McCoy led their teams to the playoffs in their first seasons, and Arians had the rare 10-6 team to not make the playoffs.

Going into Week 9 of this season, Arian’s team is in first place in the NFC West at 7-1, Kelly’s Eagles lead the NFC East at 6-2, Marrone’s Bills and Reid’s Chiefs are 5-3 and in the wild-card hunt, and McCoy’s Chargers are 5-4 after a 5-1 start. Only Bradley’s Jaguars continue to struggle at 1-8.

There is nothing subjective about that report. Those are the facts.

Now here is the question no one seems to be asking: How much of the blame for what ails the Bears more rightly belongs to Emery?

What if he had hired Kelly, McCoy, Reid or Arians instead? And what are we to make of the changes he’s made to the roster since his arrival.

It is far harder to measure the impact of a general manager on his team in the short term, so for now, Emery gets an incomplete.

But it is fair to ask if things don’t work out with Trestman, should Emery survive to make another hire?

Personally, I hope that’s not a question we’ll have to answer.

possible exception of Philadelphia, are as talented as the Bears, and none has as expensive or frustrating a quarterback.

All of that said, it wouldn’t be fair to give Trestman a failing grade. He hasn’t failed, he’s just struggled mightily.

His defense has been beset with injuries since he got here, and this season the offense has been battered, as well.

In spite of that, his offense has been much improved over the unit he inherited. At the same time, he is the head coach and equally responsible for one of the league’s best defenses becoming one of its worst on his watch.

Finally, any coach at the minimum deserves combat pay for having to deal with Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler, and the leadership void left in his locker room when Brian Urlacher was given the boot shortly after his arrival has been a problem.

What Trestman has not done at any point is wilt or waiver under fire, and although he has failed to inspire his team’s efforts, he has shown consistency, calm and grace in the face of a rapidly deteriorating situation.

For where his team is at right now, a D+ seems appro-

Declarer won with his diamond ace and should have led a heart or ruffed a spade, but he played a diamond to dummy’s king and ruffed a diamond low. West happily overruffed and led the club jack, on which East discarded his heart four to give West count in the suit.

So, when South won and finally tried a heart, West ducked and the contract had to fail.
