Born: April 5, 1942; in LaSalle, IL Died: Oct. 31, 2014; in Pontiac, IL Nancy J. Orr, 72, passed away at Evenglow Lodge October 31, 2014, at 10:55 p.m. Pontiac, IL. She formerly resided in Emington, IL. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2014, at the Dwight United Methodist Church with Interment at Union Cemetery, Emington, IL. The Rev. Lance Leeds officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hager Memorial Home, Dwight.

Mrs. Orr was born to Harvey and E. Grace Hawley Lugar on April 5, 1942, in LaSalle, IL. She married Robert Orr on January 22, 1961, in Pontiac, IL. They were married 53 years. Robert passed away January 1, 2014.

Mrs. Orr is survived by 2 sons, Phillip (Vicki) Orr, of Fairbury and William (Sherri) Orr, of Reddick, IL. A daughter, Robin Orr Webb, of Elk

Grove Village, IL. Nine grandchildren, Brigett, Samantha, Sydney, Seth, Jordan, Logan, Madison Orr, Alexandra and Colin Webb. A great grandchild, Jonathan Trucks. A brother, Alan (Betty) Lugar; a sister-in-law, Shirley Nolan; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She worked as a nurse for Dr. Shrivastav and was a member of the Dwight United Methodist Church. She was a 4-H leader, belonged too: Livingston County Home Extension, Thursday Evening Club, United Methodist Women and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Orr was a graduate of Pontiac High School and the KCC nurse program receiving her LPN degree. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, painting, country music, traveling and loved attending the grandkids programs and events.

Besides Lolly and Mea, three other dogs participated in this year’s costume contest: 4-year-old Tessa, a Merle collie dressed as a ballerina, 1-yearold Reese, a German shepherd mixed with rottweiler dressed as a spider, and 4-year-old Maggie, a beagle dressed as a bumblebee.

The five judges, who were

seniors, were so amazed by the costumes that each contestant won the grand prize of a squeaky toy, frisbee and treats.

“The judges said they were all so good they couldn’t make a decision,” said Bonnie Latta, owner of Bone-ifide Care.

“They said the dogs were all winners.”

Latta said 20 dogs participated in the first year of the

Howl-O-Ween costume contest. Through the years that number has trickled down because of people’s busy schedules.

“The smaller the group, the more attention the pets get,” Latta said.

The owner said she continues to hold the event at nursing homes every year because she saw its benefits to residents and how much they en-

joyed it. The weekend before a contest was held at Walnut Grove Village nursing home in Morris.

She added the majority of animals at the contests are dogs because dogs can travel the easiest and are the most social.

“They’re part of the family, love you unconditionally and always want to be with you,” Latta said.

LaVarier’s border collie, 8-year-old Mea, and four other dogs participated in the eighth annual Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, 1221 S. Edgewater Drive, Morris.

The contest was hosted by Bone-ifide Care Inc., a Morris-based pet training and sitting business.

LaVarier of Morris said her grandmother died Nov. 1, 2013, and that she participates in this event to honor her memory and her special relationship with dogs.

“I know how much she loved dogs,” LaVarier said. “I do this to contribute to bringing other people happiness because I know how much happiness our dogs brought her.”

Fred Pope, who turned 101 years old Oct. 8, laughed as 4-year-old Lolly, a Shih Tzu dressed up as a hot dog, jumped into his lap.

Pope said he used to raise dogs and previously owned a female puppy.

Jen Knudson, Lolly’s owner and occupational therapist at Morris Hospital, said having the pet costume contest at the senior home is important because senior citizens respond well to animals.

“Even if they have a hard time relating to people, they can always pet the pets,” Knudson said. “It makes them remember the pets they had when they were younger and

City Council approves church relocation

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Rev. Mark Willig said he feels the former Grundy County Home was made for Friends in Christ Lutheran Church.

The Morris City Council appeared to agree when it voted 8 to 0 during its regular meeting Monday to approve a conditional permitted use to use the former nursing home located at 1338 Clay St. as a church.

Bill Cheshareck, building and zoning officer, said the building was there prior to zoning in that area. Once zoning came about, there was a conditional permit for the nursing home.

“The home was there before zoning,” Cheshareck said.

“It reverted back after it was vacant one year.”

Willig said the new building space will give them a better defined area, giving them separate Sunday school rooms, offices and a new sanctuary.

Members of the Morris Planning Commission unanimously approved the church’s request for a conditional permitted use to use the site as a church last week and recommended it to the council.

The former nursing home is in a residential zoned area, meaning it needs a conditional use permit from the city to allow for a church to be located there. A church is allowed er

in residential areas with a conditional permitted use, according to city code.

The current church building, at 180 E. Waverly St. in Morris, is a square open area without partitioned spaces to use for Sunday School and youth activities.

“Because of it being the way it is, there is a lot of wasted space,” Willig said Monday afternoon. “I can walk around and point out the areas never used. Having a distinct dedicated room is tremendously important to us.”

Willig said they are required to give a 60-day notice to their current landlord, and they hope to be moved into the new building by Christmas or shortly after.

He said he is excited for the new changes which includes a fenced-in section behind the building that will allow the kids to play and worship outside as well as inside.

“I’m looking forward to Easter, the way the building faces makes for a real Easter sunrise service, this could be exciting,” he said.

The church plans to lease 3,800 square feet of the southern portion of the building.

City Planner Mike Hoffman said at the planning commission meeting he thinks the new site is great news for the church. But he added his biggest concern is the church having enough parking on the street and in parking lots.

6 Brisbin Road project moves forward

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Background work for providing water and wastewater infrastructure to the Brisbin Road and Interstate 80 industrial area has taken another step forward.

Strand Associates and Robinson Engineering have completed a preliminary feasibility study and presented it Oct. 22 to the village of Minooka Committee of the Whole.

Channahon Village Board members heard the presentation the previous week during their regular board meeting.

The study moves development one step further to providing necessary infrastructure that will allow industry, commercial and some services to that area.

It’s part of a grant received by villages of Channahon and Minooka from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that looks at the possibilities of public utility improvements that would bring jobs to an area, Channahon Mayor Joe Cook said.

“Grundy County qualifies as one of those areas,” Cook said.

Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies was selected to do a cluster analysis and Strand Associates and Robinson Engineering were hired to provide the engineering services for the study.

Minooka and Channahon each kicked in $25,000 for it, with the remaining $50,000 cost coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The report projects water demands and wastewater flow on future growth 10, 20 and 30 years out, Minooka Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

Local municipalities awaited funding for the Brisbin Road interchange for many years. The interchange has since been completed and municipalities are now planning for future business development. where proposed wastewater treatment and water flow facilities should be located and the areas they would serve.

The cost for water supply and distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems for the first phase of the project, with a 10-year buildout, is projected at $77.69 million in 2014 dollars.

Phase 2, which has a build out expectancy of 20 years, is projected at $26.67 million; and phase 3, with a buildout of 30 years is projected at $41.05 million, according to the executive summary by Strand Associates.

A number of funding options for the infrastructure improvements were identified, such as creation of a tax increment finance district and bonds, Duffy said.

Other funding options identified in the study include grants from the Economic Development Administration and Community Development Block grants, State Revolving Fund loans and public utility

sales revenue through privatization.

Funding could pay about 50 percent. The municipalities want the industrial area to essentially pay for itself, Duffy said.

“Our goal is to get federal funding to help us out and make development pay for [improvements] as it comes in,” he said.

The next step could be a joint village board meeting with Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan and consultants to discuss how to best serve both communities, whether one village takes ownership of the services and has an intergovernmental agreement with the other, or they do it as a team effort, Cook said.

“Those are the type of things we need to work out, but they are not insurmountable by any means,” Cook said.

“It’s certainly advantageous to our communities not to have redundancies in services. We need to find the best way to service that area.”

GAVC Assistant Director Mark Hulbert said the Automotive Technology department will use it in class to show students how to diagnose what is wrong with it and purchase the parts need to get it operational and keep it that way.

Once it is working, it will be handed over to the maintenance department and a hitch will be attached to it so it can be used to haul materials to the building trades house, as well as picking up parts or things needed in other class-

rooms.

Hulbert said the GAVC Automotive Technology program has achieved its National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation Accreditation. The students receive education in automotive training to provide them with the necessary skills to enter the automotive workforce and post secondary programs in the industry.

The program relies heavily on donated vehicles. Kacena said the program is lucky if it gets one or two vehicles a year.

MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County is in the business of giving to the community.

Denise Gaska, We Care’s executive director, said it only seemed natural to extend the giving as the organization replaced the cargo van recently donated to We Care seven years ago by Holt & Sons to transport food and supplies between the stores and the food pantry.

We Care donated the 2000 Chevy 2500 van to Grundy Area Vocational Center last week, where Andy Kacena and Rob Schwiesow, instructors in the Automotive Technology Program, accepted it.

“We will use it to diagnose and repair, starting from the front and working our way back,” Kacena said.

The van started to have mechanical issues in the past year and We Care purchased a minivan and had another cargo van donated from community member Richard Larsen.

“It wasn’t running, and we’ve had issue after issue,” Gaska said. “It needs someone that can take better care of it than us. It was time for it to go.”

We Care looked into different options and decided rather than receive $75 from Cash for Clunkers, it would give it to GAVC so students could learn with it.

MORRIS – A new generator that will give power to the entire Grundy County Administration Building will be installed in December.

Chris Kindelspire, director of electronic operations for the county, said the generator and fuel base tank will be shipped on Dec. 19 and the generator dock was installed last week.

The installation of a generator dock, generator and fuel base tank was approved at a Grundy County Finance Committee meeting last week.

“Excellent job Chris, I appreciate everything you’re doing,” said John Galloway, finance committee chairman at last week’s meeting.

Even though the overall project will take three to four days to complete, Kindelspire said Monday the county is still working on getting a transfer switch for the generator, which takes 45 days to arrive at its location.

“We plan to order the transfer switch by the end of the week,” Kindelspire said.

“Hopefully, the project will be done by Christmas.”

Costs for the generator, generator dock, fuel base tank and transfer switch were not immediately available.

The existing generator, which only gave power to a portion of the county building, used too much oil and operated inefficiently during a power outage June 30 at the building,

It finally broke in September.

“It gets more expensive to fix than replace. You have to weigh your options,” said Joe Schroeder, director of the Grundy Emergency Management Agency. “Now we can power the whole building instead of a few departments.”

Schroeder said the new generator is a big deal for the Grundy County Administration Building because in the past, if there was a power outage, the county would send employees home.

“You’re paying them either way, so why not have them here providing their services?”

Schroeder said.

The existing generator is 24 years old, the same age as the Grundy County building.

Schroeder said he doesn’t know the life expectancy of a generator, but isn’t shocked that the existing one has failed.

“Some of the electrical codes have changed over the years,” he said.

Kindelspire said the county building serves as a cooling shelter in the summer and is designed to weather the storm during rough weather conditions.

He added the building is one of the two main locations for county government.

“There’s a lot of things that need to be supported. Without a new generator, we won’t be able to provide services if there’s an outage,” Kindelspire said.

MINOOKA – If anyone knew the value of a good education, it was Mary Pat Collins of Minooka.

She was a public school teacher and a religious education teacher at St. Mary Catholic Church in Minooka, but Mary Pat also was a learner.

Even her penmanship was perfect until the end, said Mary Ann Collins of Minooka, Mary Mary Pat Pat’s daughter.

“The hospice Collins nurse told us that in her last week of life, she was teaching the nurses and aides,” said Bill Collins, Mary Pat’s son.

Born and raised on the Minooka homestead her great-grandfather founded, Mary Pat grew up without running water, plumbing and electricity. Transportation was by horse and buggy. Gathering eggs from the family farm was one of her chores.

During the years she taught at a one-room schoolhouse, Mary Pat came early to light the fire and to give extra attention to students struggling with learning their letters and numbers, said Beth McDonald of Minooka, Mary Pat’s other daughter.

“She was also the school nurse and the truant officer,” Bill added.

Mary Pat taught at Cryder School, Dresden School and Channahon schools. She taught Beth’s husband, Tony, when he was in first grade and Bill’s wife, Mindy, when she was in second grade. Mary Pat remembered all her students as well as their parents, spouses and children, Bill said.

But in later years, Mary Pat was equally as comfortable with her computer, cellphone, Nook and sending email, Mary Ann said. Yet, Mary Pat never used a calculator. She preferred adding columns of num-

bers in her head, Mary Ann said, and made all the business decisions for the family farm until she was 89.

Fiercely independent and strong-willed, Mary Pat drove her car and cut her two-acre yard until about 12 months before her Sept. 28 death at the age of 93, Bill said.

Mary Pat loved current events and served as an election judge for at least 20 years, Bill said. But Mary Pat also learned about the world firsthand. She traveled through Europe, all 50 states and the Mediterranean, Bill said, as well as Morocco, Mary Ann said.

“She’d been to Ireland twice,” Mary Ann said, “and she did all the local bank tours.”

Yet, no matter how far Mary Pat roamed, she always found the location of the nearest Catholic church before she checked into a hotel, Bill said, and that was in the days before Internet and phone apps, Mary Ann added.

“I remember taking her to Christmas Eve Mass when it was 25 below,” Bill said.

Mary Pat’s obituary said Mary Pat was one of the oldest members of St. Mary’s, a devotee of daily Mass and active member of the Minooka’s Woman’s Club.

She was as loyal to St. Mary’s as she was to Minooka.

Despite her traveling, Mary Pat never wanted to live anywhere but Minooka, Mary Ann said. Proud of her faith and eager to pass it down to the next generation, Mary Pat directed the religious education program at St. Mary’s and served as teacher, Mary Ann said.

And yet, Mary Pat’s children feel their mother’s legacy is people, the family she left behind. Mary Pat was the family historian, the one everyone sought out for information, Bill said. They also sought her out at family parties, Beth added.

“She was always the center of attention,” Beth said. “She was so easy to get along with.”

The Morris football team showed no fear Saturday against Normal U-High in the Class 5A first-round playoffs at Illinois State University, and the Redskins forced the game to go their way late in the game.

As a result, they pulled off a 21-14 victory that gave them a home game this weekend against Mahomet-Seymour.

Mahomet beat Washington, 276, on Saturday.

The Redskins (6-4) gave notice early.

U-High received the opening kickoff and drove to the Morris 4-yard line. On fourthand-goal from the 4, however, Morris’ T.J. Layne sacked U-High’s Nick Phelan for an 8-yard loss. It was the first of three sacks for Layne, as well as numerous pressures.

“That was part of the game plan,” Layne said. “We wanted to put pressure on him (Phelan) and not let him get outside where he can run. We wanted to take him out of his comfort zone. Everyone on the defensive line did their jobs, and I was able to be the one to get there and get a couple of sacks.”

From their own 12-yard line, the eighth-seeded Redskins took just seven plays to cover 88 yards, all on the ground. Jake Walker scored on a 14-yard run, while the drive was highlighted by a 46yard burst from Keagan Sobol.

Morris finished with 333 yards rushing.

Griffin Sobol led with 109 yards, while Keagan Sobol had 91 and Walker had 82 with two touchdowns.

“We just kept grinding it at them,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “We believe in these kids, and they believe in themselves. Confidence-wise, you would never have known we were the 5-4 team. Our kids just believe.”

Top-seeded U-High (9-1 scored late in the first half on a 13-yard run by Niles Smith, but Matt Feiden blocked the extra point to help Morris take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Up next No. 4 Mahomet-Seymour (8-2) at No. 8 Morris (6-4), 3 p.m. Saturday the score the same, Walker scored his second touchdown of the game, this one from 4 yards out, and Morris took a 14-6 lead with 9:59 to play.

It was short-lived, however, as U-High executed a perfect hook-and-lateral play, with Sam Alvik taking the pitch and motoring 54 yards for a touchdown.

The 2-point conversion was good, and the game was tied at 14 with 9:38 to play.

Morris faced fourth-and-1 from its own 29-yard line and lined up to punt, but had a trick of its own up its sleeve when Joey Webb took a short snap and carried the ball for four yards and a first down.

Morris marched down the field, and Feiden finished the drive off with a 19-yard burst up the middle with 3:08 to play.

“That fake punt was huge,” Thorson said. “Joey Webb came up with a huge play.

That’s the thing about this team. You can go up and down the lineup and find big plays by almost everyone. We don’t have the big superstars, but the kids play together and become a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts.”

The Pioneers weren’t done, however, and had the ball at the Morris 21-yard line with 30 seconds remaining. Layne then sacked Phelan for a 12yard loss. An intentional grounding penalty was tacked on that moved U-High out of scoring position.

“Our defense played great,” Thorson said. “They kept us in it. This team has heart, that’s for sure.

STAFF REPORTS EAST PEORIA – For the second week in a row, Morris freshman Mya Shannon and LaSalle-Peru senior Megan Krolak ran the same time in minutes and seconds in a Class 2A cross country race.

On Saturday, Shannon beat Krolak by tenths of a second in the East Peoria Sectional to avenge the Morris Regional loss last week. More importantly, Shannon’s fifth-place finish advances her as an individual to the IHSA State Finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Shannon is believed to be the first girl in MCHS history to advance to the state meet.

As a team, the girls placed 13th, which was also the best performance in school history.

After Shannon, who ran 18:28 to take fifth, came Meghan Smith (59th 20:09), Sophie Tibbott (81st, 20:40), Lily Tibbott (113th, 21:49), Katherine Gallick (116th, 21:58), Bridget Gile (128th, 23:28) and Maria Blanco (119th, 23:51).

“We were proud of all of our girls today,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “Quite a bit of the focus and attention from the outside was on Mya. But the team ran well and gave us our best finish in school history. The top four are freshmen and sophomores, and five of our top seven, so the future looks bright, but we will miss our graduating seniors. Katherine, Bridget, Alexis Halcomb, and Emily Burling did a great job leading our younger girls by setting good examples as student-athletes.

“We are just thrilled for Mya. She has a bulldog mentality, and the last three races – all conference, top two in the regional, and top five in a tough sectional – she has just competed and refused to let up.

She is definitely not running like a freshman and the goal now is to get her in the top 25 and earn all-state honors. Today was a great day for her.”

The Morris boys finished 14th overall and did not have a runner advance to the state meet. The Redskins were led

by Jacob Wantland, who finished 35th with a time of 16:11.

“This was not the team finish or individual finishes we were hoping for, but our guys ran extremely hard,” Blumberg said. “This group of seniors has done more for Morris cross country than can ever be measured in medals and trophies. They train hard, race hard, but they have a lot

of fun and have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. They are a family and it was really tough to see the years and emotion in the team tent after they realized it was all over. They will be missed.”

Class 3A: Minooka won the girls team title at Quincy with 53 points, edging O’Fallon’s total of 59. Ashley Tutt was first overall with a time of 17:42, while Mackenzie Callahan was second in 18:04.

Morgan Crouch took fifth in

18:37, while Emily Shelton was eighth in 18:44. Other Minooka runners were Gaby Gall (40th, 19:51), Emily Ellis (51st, 20:10) and Caitlin Kurtz (54th, 20:13).

The Minooka boys finished seventh and did not qualify as a team. However, individuals Gabe Ceballos (10th, 15:44) and Soren Knudsen (19th, 16:04) did qualify for next weekend’s state meet.

tional with a time of 18:37.

Meanwhile, Seneca finished second as a team at the Oregon Sectional and advanced to the state meet. The loser in this election? The voters Some of you will read this column before the election, and some of you will read it after. I suppose I could’ve written two columns, but I’ve been kinda busy, so let’s talk about one of the weirdest things that happened this campaign season.

Earlier this year, ultraconservative activist Jack Roeser told me his friend Bruce Rauner believed life began at conception. “I’d describe him as a guy who is a morally right-to-life guy, but not on the hustings,” Roeser, who has since passed away, said about Rauner.

Jack and many of his right-to-life allies backed Rauner every step of the way, while Rauner, who belatedly admitted that he’s pro-choice, spent much of the Republican primary focusing his attention on pledging battles with Springfield Democrats and their teachers union allies and fighting for term limits.

The candidate has often said he has “no social agenda,” and would instead focus solely on cleaning up government and getting the economy running again.

But he also wanted to avoid stressing the issue for fear of alienating a relatively small but still important base of Republican voters who just won’t vote for a pro-choicer of any party. Every vote counts, especially if you’re a Republican running in Democratic-leaning Illinois.

Rauner has contributed about 80 percent of every dollar the party has raised. He installed a loyal ally as party chairman. They haven’t done much over there without first checking in with the candidate.

You got your Republican candidate claiming he’s pro-choice and the almost totally Rauner-funded state GOP saying he’s for employer-funded birth control while spending big bucks (mostly Rauner’s) to warn rank and file Republicans against voting for a pro-gay marriage candidate from a pro-choice party.

The Democrats were outraged, incensed even that Rauner would be so duplicitous. It was proof, they said, that Rauner was really anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage at heart.

The Democrats only said that in Chicago, of course.

The truth is they’ve been planning this all along.

Folks at the very top of the Quinn campaign told me last summer they were going to make trouble for Rauner with Downstate conservatives by pushing him as far to the Left as they could in Chicago. I even wrote about it.

Their close allies helped keep the pro-life, pro-gun Libertarian on the ballot when the Republicans tried to kick him off and then they funded his campaign in order to peel votes away from Rauner.

Again, as I write this, I don’t know who won the election. But I sure know who lost. You.

You might feel like that when you look at today’s deal. It is the same as yesterday’s, but it has been rotated by 90 degrees. Yesterday, we discussed how to defeat three spades. But suppose that South buys it in three diamonds. What happens with best play by both pairs?

North’s negative double showed length in both minors. Then, over East’s cautious raise to two spades (he should have bid three spades -- get to the nine-trick level with nine trumps), South’s three-diamond rebid was aggressive. He might have passed, waiting for partner to double again with sufficient values to compete at the three-level.

East-West can defeat three diamonds. West starts with his club king and continues with his club ace.

This conventionally shows that West started with only those two clubs.

With ace-king-third or longer, he would have led the ace at trick one.

At trick two, East makes a suit-preference signal to tell West where his entry lies. Here, East drops his 10 on the second round to show a spade entry.

Now it is simplest if West cashes his spade king before playing a second spade to his partner’s ace. Then a club lead from East promotes a trump trick for West to defeat the contract.

Note that if West shifts to a low spade at trick three, East must win as cheaply as possible and cash the second spade trick before leading a club. If East wins trick three and immediately plays a club, South can get home by discarding his second spade.

Dear Doctor K: What should I expect when my daughter goes through puberty? How can I help her as she goes through these changes?

Dear Reader: Full disclosure: I don’t have any personal or parental experience to tap into for this question.

Experienced colleagues and friends always emphasize how important it is to discuss puberty with your daughter before these changes begin. She needs to know what to expect and also that these changes are perfectly normal.

Otherwise, she might be frightened by the first signs of change, such as her first menstrual bleeding.

Puberty typically lasts for four or five years. In girls, it usually starts between the ages of 8 and 13. Remind your daughter that it is normal to begin puberty anywhere within this range. (But do mention it to your child’s doctor if your daughter is showing signs of puberty before age 8, or if there are no signs of puberty by age 13.)

During puberty, the whole body changes shape and size. For most girls, the first sign of puberty is breast growth. This will start with a small round lump (breast bud) under one or both nipples. The lump will gradually grow, along with the dark area around the nipples (areola).

A family friend once told me that her daughter had become terrified that she might have breast cancer when her breasts started to grow.

This happened not long after the girl overheard her mother telling a friend that “breast cancer runs in my family.”

Girls gain weight and muscle and grow taller during puberty.

This growth peaks about one year after puberty has begun. The storage of body

Hair grows in the pubic area, on the legs and under the arms. Glands in the skin make more oil and sweat.

Body odor and acne may become noticeable.

Most girls begin to have periods (menstruate) about two years after the start of breast development. On average, in the United States, girls get their first period around age 12 1/2. However, menstruation may start as early as 9 years or as late as 17 years old. A girl’s first few menstrual periods tend to be irregular, until the ovaries mature and start to produce eggs regularly.

In addition to these physical changes, puberty brings emotional changes. For example, many preteens feel anxious or self-conscious about the physical changes of puberty, especially when comparing themselves with others.

Your child’s moods will also change quickly and often during this time. Mood swings are normal and are probably related to changing hormone levels.

Do your best to support, encourage and guide your daughter though this new and different, but also exciting and important, time.

Even if you’ve done a good job of explaining what to expect, the changes of puberty may frighten your daughter.

Your ongoing explanation and reassurance are as important as your preparation of your daughter for the coming of puberty.
