It’s important in life that we pause to celebrate successes once in a while. We get so busy in our daily lives that before we know it, another year has gone by – another birthday, holiday or anniversary. When you stop to reflect on the years gone by, you realize just how far you have come.

I think back to when I started as executive director of the United Way of Grundy County – I had a lot to celebrate. In September, I celebrated year five. I come from a background of more than 25 years working in nonprofits. This experience gave me the skills to be where I am today, doing what I love at an organization that positively impacts the lives of others.

United Way of Grundy County, founded in 1946, will be celebrating 70 years in Grundy County. There have been many changes over the years but one thing has remained – our mission to “help improve lives.”

It began as the Community Chest in 1946 with a group of local individuals who came together to make a difference.

The campaign goal was $1,800, which supported three local nonprofit agencies. In 1970, the name was changed to United Fund Inc. The campaign goal was $61,454. By that time, more individuals joined the Board of Directors, additional agencies were supported and more residents of Grundy County received services. In 2002, the name was changed to the United Way of Grundy County. The campaign goal was $330,192, which supported 21 local nonprofit agencies due to an increased need for services.

Now we are approaching our 70th anniversary. Our campaign goal is $525,000 and currently we support 32 local nonprofit agencies. There are 16 members of the Board of Directors. These local community members are volunteers who demonstrate great passion, dedication and support for our

COMMUNITY PULSE Karen Nall mission. In addition, advisory and special events committees made up of volunteers work on specific tasks, which assist us in meeting our goals, and a core group of volunteers continually assists us whenever help is needed. I am grateful for all the boards of directors, committee members and volunteers from the past to our present for their dedication to our United Way. Lastly, and most importantly, over the past 70 years our donors continue to be true philanthropists in every sense of the word. Without the support from the community, our United Way would not be able to “help improve lives.” The annual campaign money raised stays local. It is because of our donors that we are able to support a variety of programs and services in Grundy County.

Many of our donors have given to our campaign for more than 10 years, 20 years and some more than that. From businesses and companies to employees giving through payroll deduction to individuals in the community, our donors are the reason we are able to celebrate 70 years in Grundy County.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Mother-daughter pair Kathy Kingman and Carleen Gonzalez walked through the dining room of the 121-year-old home at 309 W. Main St. and listened to stories of doctors who owned the house in years past and the elegant entertaining the current owners conduct in the Morris Heritage Home.

“We like to visit the homes to get inspiration from all of the beautiful decorations to start off the holiday season. I have been to the house walk for the past 15 years and have come with my daughter for the last eight,” Kingman said.

For more than 20 years, people have flocked to Morris to see the Christmas decor in various homes across the small community as a part of the Home for the Holidays House Walk. This year, four homes were on the walk and ranged from old to newer construction.

“We definitely decorated in a traditional country theme.

We can’t pull contemporary off in an 1894 home. We had five big trees and three small trees.

But in a 14-room house, we had to do a lot to fill the space,” House Walk homeowner Lorie Birch said. “I used to be an interior designer, so decorating is what I love to do.”

Tickets for the House Walk were $15, which made the event the largest moneymaker for the entire Home for the Holidays weekend, House Walk coordinator Penny Olson said. Olson said the money made was donated to the Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice – as it has been from the walk’s inception – as well as two scholarships, the beautification of downtown Morris and to pay for the part of the Home for the Holidays events not sponsored by the city of Morris.

Toni Rockis, House Walk homeowner of 555 Edgewater Drive, said she and her husband wanted to be on the House Walk this year to honor what the hospice has done for their family.

“I wanted to be on the walk this year because we love what the hospice does. Joan Sereno does an amazing job as the executive director of the hospice, so we do what we can to help her. She was amazing when she helped my mother and my husband’s mother in hospice,” Rockis said.

Channahon Park to host Santa’s mailbox If you go

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – For more than 15 years the Channahon Park District’s Arrowhead Community Center has served as one of Santa’s post offices.

Children who drop off a letter to Santa from Dec. 1 through 10, will receive a letter back from the man in red if they include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

“We get about 300 letters a year here,” said Nicole Vaira, a park district employee.

“His elves pick up the letters throughout the day and get them to Santa.”

She said there typically are two types of letters dropped off: One is just a list of what the child wants while others ask how Santa is doing and share stories with him.

“They all ask for something from Santa at the end,” she said.

The often hand-written letters come from children of all ages from toddler to about fifth grade.

“Sometimes the parents help write the letter for toddlers, others are written by the kids,” Vaira said. “It’s an experience everyone should have.”

Vaira said on Dec. 11 the mailbox gets shipped back to the North Pole. The mailbox sits outside the Arrowhead Community Center at 24856 W. Eames St. in Channahon, so parents and children can drop off letters without going in the center.

Continued from page 3 have made the House Walk their holiday tradition and have only missed one year of the walk. The two admired how the Rockis’ decorated a tree with Santa tree toppers, and wanted to take the inspiration home.

“I love to get decoration ideas from other people. Last year one of the homes used a glass tray on a bed and placed a large Santa on it. I loved it and took that idea and used it in my house last year,” Zebell said.

Olson said she encouraged the homeowners to decorate how they normally would, so the house reflected their individual style.

Cecilia Mistretta’s 1942 home at 415 Goold Park Drive was owned at one time collectively by Morris society. She decorated it in a traditional style that depicted what an old-fashioned hometown Christmas would resemble in the period of the home.

“I used my collection of nutcrackers and traditional family ornaments my kids have been given through the years as well as beautiful things from around the world we have collected on our own travels or [been] given by friends,” Mistretta said.

Paula Newsom decided to let her daughters’ themed rooms lend to the holiday decor when she prepared their family home at 1020 Dupont Ave. to be on the walk.

Morris resident “One daughter had a ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ theme and the other had her room in a British theme. Our basement was a woodland Christmas with animals and such, but the one thing I was not sure I was going to put up was my great-grandmother’s 65-yearold rotating tinsel tree,” Newsom said. “It’s kind of pathetic, but an original tree is so great, it’s a blast from the past.”

More than 1,000 people came out between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, according to the walk organizers.

A complimentary tea hosted by the First United Methodist Church offered snacks and drinks for those on the tour.

In addition to the walk, those who purchased a ticket were entered into a chance to win a $500 Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a $500 Morris Retail Association gift certificate or a free stay at the Morris Holiday Inn Express and Suites.

Maurice Strong, UN climate pioneer, dies

By CHARMAINE NORONHA The Associated Press TORONTO – Maurice Strong, whose work helped lead to the landmark climate summit that begins in Paris on Monday, has died at age 86, the head of the U.N.’s environmental agency said Saturday.

The Canadian-born Strong, the first U.N. Environment Program chief, organized the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, which led to the launch of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“Strong will forever be remembered for placing the environment on the international agenda and at the heart of development,” Achim Steiner, executive director of UNEP, said in a statement.

The statement did not provide details of Strong’s passing.

Christiana Figueres, the current head of the U.N. climate agency, tweeted Saturday that “we thank Maurice Strong for his visionary impetus to our understanding of sustainability. We will miss you.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who will be attending the climate summit in Paris, said in a statement that “Mr. Strong was an internationally recognized environmentalist and philanthro-

Steiner said Strong’s work helped usher in a new era of international environmental diplomacy at the 1972 Stockholm Conference, which saw the birth of UNEP, the first U.N. agency to be headquartered in a developing country.

As head of UNEP, Strong convened the first international expert group meeting on climate change.

Steiner urged the international community to honor Strong’s vision by adopting a climate deal in Paris.

“The sustainability roadmap which started in Stockholm, continued in Rio, Johannesburg and Rio+20, must now become a reality in Paris,” Steiner said. “This would indeed be the most fitting tribute to the legacy of Maurice Strong; leader, mentor and friend.”

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper in 2010, Strong said that “analytically,” he was pessimistic that

the world would be able to take on looming environmental challenges. “I believe the odds are against us for making the changes we need to make in time,” he said. “But, operationally, I’m optimistic because I believe that it is still possible.”

Strong, a former oil industry executive, also held several other positions at the U.N. Earlier in his career, he led the Canadian International Development Agency.

In 1976, Strong resigned from his position as the head of the U.N.’s environmental agency to return to Canada as Chairman and CEO of oil and gas company Petro-Canada, prompting an editorial from The New York Times describing him as “the first official custodian” of the planet.

He was also the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Order of Canada, the country’s top honor and received honorary doctorates from several universities.

Author Felix Dodds issued a statement saying that he worked with Strong on his last book, “Only One Earth: The Long Road via Rio to Sustainable Development.”

“It seems impossible to think that he is no longer with us,” said Dodds. “That we will not have his good council when we lose our way.”

Olene Walker, Utah’s first female governor, dies at age 85 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SALT LAKE CITY – Olene Smith Walker, who prioritized education as the first and only female governor of Utah and later established an institute to help students pursue public service careers, died Saturday at 85 in Salt Lake City.

Walker died from natural causes, former spokeswoman Amanda Covington said.

Considered one of the highest profile women in Utah politics, the Republican served as lieutenant governor for 11 years.

She was elevated to governor when Gov. Mike Leavitt left in 2003 to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under President George W. Bush.

Leavitt remembered her as a “trailblazer” for women and a friend to the downtrodden.

“Throughout the nearly 11 years we served together she was a loyal partner, an example of personal goodness and devoted friend,” Leavitt said. “Her disposition was perpetually optimistic, her demeanor dignified, and her tone kind.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Morris boys basketball team had a distinct size advantage Saturday night in its matchup with Coal City in the final game of the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

In the second half, they used it to their advantage, as the Redskins increased a 20-19 halftime lead to 38-29 by the end of the third quarter and ended up with a 56-40 win.

Morris outrebounded Coal City, 29-14, and went 23 of 33 from the free throw line.

The victory gave the Redskins a 3-1 record in the round-robin tournament, good for second place.

Jordan Miracle was named to the all-tournament team, along with Coal City’s Collin Hundley, Gardner-South Wilmington’s Scott Horrie and tourney champion Immaculate Conception’s Austin Reed and Troy Burrows.

Miracle finished Saturday night’s game with a game-high 26 points, while teammate Matt Shaw made 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to prevent any thought of a Coal City comeback.

Shaw finished with 13 points.

“Our guys underneath were giving us good flashes,” Miracle said. “And we had good ball movement. Getting the ball down low a few times helps open things up outside.

“I knew that, as a senior, that I would have to step up a little bit this year. I don’t mind that role. I just want to help the team win.”

STAFF REPORTS SENECA – The Seneca boys basketball team finished fourth at its own Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, falling, 44-41, to Mendota in the third-place game.

Sean Baker, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Irish (2-2) with 17 points, while Brody Harty scored nine points and Devin Bryant added seven.

Seneca returns to action Tuesday night, hosting Morris.

On Friday night, the Fighting Irish dropped a 60-34 decision to tourney champion Illiana Christian. Baker led

Cutler proving able to bounce back

By RICK MORRISSEY rmorrissey@suntimes.com The Bears’ defense prevented the Packers from scoring the game-winning touchdown with first-and-goal and 51 seconds left Thursday night in Green Bay. That’s what Thanksgiving is for.

Slippery superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the ball, his snake-tongue release, his eagle vision and just eight yards to go with plenty of time.

But thanks to Tracy Porter, Kyle Fuller, Shea McClellin, Bryce Callahan and all the big dudes up front, the defense held – no matter how improbably – and the Bears won, 17-13.

To see Rodgers play so badly against a team he usually has his way with was to be forced to re-examine who the Bears might be. Though they haven’t made it to .500 yet, and they have just one win in the NFC North, the Bears could possibly make it to the playoffs. Likely?

No. Possible? Yes. Just like they did by winning in Green Bay, where they were 1-6 since 2008, the Bears can rearrange your mind when you least expect it.

The defense is playing well.

And then there is that other huge thing – Jay Cutler.

Just four days before beating the Packers, Cutler seemed to be regressing. He threw an inter-

ception, lost a key fumble and finished with a weak 70.4 rating in a 17-15 loss to the Broncos on Nov. 22. Wasn’t that the Cutler we know, anticipate? Close, but no cigar?

But then comes the Packers game, and abruptly Cutler is back to the hopeful leader we dared to believe might be emerging after all these years.

He completed 19 of 31 passes for a modest 200 yards and one touchdown. But he didn’t turn the ball over, and he finished with a 90.8 rating. And he won.

Stuff happens.

Cutler, as always, is the key.

His talent is obvious. And maybe his head has caught up.

It’s a week to dream.

OPINION Democracy requires free, open speech SPRINGFIELD – “Do you have anything against the United States or its allies?”

Um, well no.

The question was posed to me more than 30 years ago by a fellow who was looking for a college roommate.

He was an aspiring Army officer who wanted to make sure he wasn’t exposed to – or associated with – ideas he didn’t agree with.

We ended up rooming together, but I always thought it was a bit sad that on a college campus, of all places, someone was afraid of ideas.

I love the marketplace of ideas one finds on college campuses – or on newspaper editorial pages.

Sadly, there are quite a few folks who believe freedom of speech exists only to protect what they have to say – but not to protect the speech of someone with whom they disagree.

I get letters from those folks every week.

I can appreciate a reasoned argument, even if it is one I disagree with. Sometimes, especially if it is one I disagree with.

That’s why I find what’s happening on college campuses so disturbing.

Youngsters – and some adults – don’t want all points of view told.

Instead they are asking for affirmation of their experience or “pain.”

Huh? College isn’t a place to be coddled; it’s a place to be challenged.

It ruffled some feathers when a student journalist went to cover a protest on the University of Missouri campus. He was forced away by a mob.

Over at Smith College, a fancy East Coast school, students protesting in solidarity with those in Missouri barred reporters from covering their event unless the journalists affirmed that they were in agreement with their ideas.

This mindset is metastasizing from campus to campus.

Famous defense lawyer and Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz says he experienced it recently when he spoke at City College of New York, where he was the target of anti-Semitic slurs and hate speech.

“These students don’t want me to be safe,” he told Business Insider. “They don’t want students who agree with me to be safe. They just want their ideas to be safe and protected from any contrary point of view.”

Well said, professor.

Democracy only works when speech is free and open.

Harold Wilson, a former prime minister of Great Britain, said, “Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you’re scared to death.”

At the bridge table, some players get scared that partner will pass in the “middle” of the auction. For example, look at the North hand in this diagram.

You pass, and partner opens one spade. What would you do now?

If you were not a passed hand, you would happily respond two clubs, planning to support spades on the next round. Now, if you bid two clubs, partner might pass.

So, a columnist recommended jumping to three spades. I think that is awful. Jump raises require four trumps.

The best solution is to use the Drury convention, when a two-club response by a passed hand shows at least three-card support for partner’s major and a maximum pass. But if you do not use Drury, you should still bid two clubs.

Some 99 percent of the time, partner will not pass. And if he does, you will not have missed a good game contract.

In this deal, over two clubs, partner will rebid two hearts, and you can continue with two spades – or perhaps even three spades. Over either, partner should raise to four spades.

After West leads a trump, how should South plan the play?

Declarer has four potential losers in the red suits, but one can be eliminated by ruffing a diamond in the dummy.

After taking the first trick, South can duck a diamond.

He wins the next trump, cashes the diamond ace, ruffs his last diamond, and turns to hearts. Here, he comes home safely.

Daughter dreads holiday visit to mom in diminished health Dear Abby: I gave birth to a baby girl two months ago.

I have a wonderful husband and my in-laws are incredible. We live far away from both sides of the family.
