Robert Archie “Bob” McNeely, age 74, of Heyworth, IL passed away on November 27, 2014, at Heartland Health Center,

Normal.

Robert was born on February 9, 1940, in Kendall County Illinois, the son of Arthur Ray and Ruby Lucille Findley McNeely. He graduated from Morris High School. He married Kathryn Ann Toepke on April 16, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington, IL. She survives in Heyworth.

Visitation will be 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday,at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, 1115 E Washington Street, Bloomington, IL and from

10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bloomington, IL. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church 801 S. Madison St., Bloomington , IL with Pastor Chris Nitzel presiding. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

Bob retired from GrowMark, Inc. in 1998 after 38 years. He was a former member of Married League, usher, and trustee at Trinity Lutheran Church. He served as president of the Transportation Club of Bloomington in 1976. In Bob’s post

GOOSE LAKE – Firefighters on Friday put out a car on fire in the driveway of a home at 6010 E. Peart Road.

The car was destroyed, but the

Steve was born November 16, 1950, in Fairbury, IL to Ray and Wilma Wilkey. He married Patricia Maurer on February 17, 1979, at St. Rose Church in Strawn, IL. He is survived by his loving wife; daughters, Whitney (Brian) Scott of Dwight, and Katie (John) Martin of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Aiden, Kallen, Westen, Grace and Parker; and sister, Carolyn (Randy) Henderson, Bloomington. Other survivors include his mother& father-in-law, many special brothersand sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents; and several special aunts and uncles.

Steve worked at the First National Bank of Dwight for 30 years, proudly serving as bank president for almost 17 years. He was also involved in many community organizations. Steve’s greatest joy was his family, especially the time he spent with his grandchildren. He was an amazing husband, Dad, and Papa. He will be always loved and forever missed.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made in honor of Steve Wilkey to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

“I was excited to see the lights lit up,” said 10-year-old Jese Breen of Morris. “You get that rush during the countdown when it’s about to happen.”

The parade leading to the park had about 30 entries this year.

The lighted parade, which is organized by volunteers, has been held for more than 20 years and used to be held in the daytime, according to Julie Applegate, executive director for the Morris Downtown Development Partnership.

Ethics commission informs residents of ability to file complaints

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Those with complaints or concerns regarding unethical conduct within Grundy County government have a resource to express their issues to – the Grundy County Ethics Commission.

The Grundy County Ethics Commission recently released a public statement, which can be found online at grundyco.org, notifying residents they can file complaints if they’re aware of any unethical practices happening in county government.

Gary Cox, chairman of the commission, said any taxpayer can file the complaint against an elected Grundy County official or employee.

“If they’re running for office and using employees to help campaign, the employ-

ee at that point can fill out a complaint,” Cox said. “We review the complaint. If there is a violation of ordinance, we proceed from there.”

If the commission finds the unethical conduct to be true, it will make a recommendation of disciplinary action which can include fines or charges, according to the statement.

A few unethical practices listed in the statement include conflicts of interest, using county time for for personal reasons, unreasonable termination and gifts or contributions from a prohibited source.

Ron Severson, Grundy County Board chairman, said the state’s attorney’s office looks at the complaints first to see if there are any criminal violations. If there are no criminal violations, then the

Severson said the ability to file a complaint is a good idea because it provides the public a specific place to report to if they see something unethical.

The ethics commission was created about 10 years ago, but the county never appointed anyone to be on

the commission, according to Perry Rudman, assistant state’s attorney.

In 2013, an ordinance was passed that amended and recreated the commission.

Severson handpicked the seven appointed members.

“We didn’t have one before, and I always thought we did. We’ve never had one in Grundy County before,” Severson said.

The board chairman said the commission, which has a mixture of Democrats and Republicans, has to be separate from the Grundy County Board.

“I can’t even go to their meetings. We’re totally divorced from them,” Severson said. “There can’t be any influence from board members.”

Cox said he doesn’t think the public or employees even

knew the commission existed until now, which might be why the commission hasn’t received any complaints yet.

“We want to make them aware of this avenue,” Cox said.

Anyone interested in obtaining the ordinance or a complaint form can receive both at the Grundy County Administration Building at 1320 Union St., Morris, or by contacting the administration assistant or state’s attorney’s office, according to the county website.

The forms must be returned in a sealed envelope to the Grundy County Administration Building to the care of the Grundy County Ethics Commission.

Local boys ask for donations to We Care for their birthdays

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Andrew Danek decided to have a birthday party this year, he wanted to do something for someone else, just as his brother Brady did when he turned 9 last year.

“I asked my friends to bring canned food instead of presents,” said Andrew Danek, a student at Immaculate Conception School in Morris. “It’s better to give.”

He said he feels joy when he gives something to someone else, so he didn’t mind when the 15 kids from school showed up to his bowling party with food for We Care of Grundy County.

Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care, said the food Andrew gathered will supplement Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, and will help in the pantry that serves 250 families on a regular basis.

As he handed out invitations to his third-grade class, he said the other kids didn’t think his present request was odd at all.

“My friend Gabe said it was a nice sacrifice,” he said.

His parents, Brian and Heather Danek, said the families from her son’s school were generous in their donations, and Andrew put the items into two carts to get them to the We Care food pantry.

The idea to give to others on his 9th birthday started when Andrew’s 10-year-old brother, Brady, turned 9 in May 2013 and had a pool party at the house.

“To me, when you give something away, it feels better,” Brady said. “It’s less responsibility to take care of the things you are given anyway.”

He also said most toys young boys get for presents are forgotten quickly.

“When you receive a toy you are only interested in it for about two weeks,” he said.

“When you give something to people who have never been given anything, they think, ‘That was the best thing ever.’ “ Heather said she hoped the boys would learn there is joy in helping others, “I want them to know helping others is just what you do.

Gaska said both Brady and Andrew set a great example of

how to live.

“I think the most important lesson you can teach a child is to share, whether it’s sharing toys with their siblings or sharing their birthday party with a charity, or sharing their time to volunteer – it all comes down to sharing,” Gaska said in an email.

When young people learn this lesson early, they benefit for a lifetime, Gaska said. She thanked the brothers and their parents for setting a good example for others.

“Those who spend their lives giving to others, especially to others whom they do not know, reap the best rewards of life – love for and from others, contentment with their own blessings and the joy of selfless acts,” Gaska added.

Performers gathered Monday and Tuesday to run through the show on stage and iron out details. With a full cast, colorful sets and elaborate lighting, the show provides something for everyone.

Dancers and actors spin and twirl through the musical numbers. The adaptation of the movie lends itself well to the stage, allowing the different age groups’ talent to be showcased.

“The idea for a multifaceted show, featuring dance and theater, is really the brainchild of Ann Gill,” Scerine said. “We had been thinking of this sort of thing for a long while and it finally came to fruition three years ago.”

Scerine said her goal is to sell at least 1,000 tickets between the two performances.

COAL CITY – Charlie Brown, the good-natured leader of the Peanuts gang, has come alive for people in the Coal City area, thanks to dancers and actors associated with the On Broadway Dance Studio.

Director Kim Scerine has organized a variety show full of story, talent and fun.

Dancers and actors from Coal City High School and On Broadway offer a unique take on the Charles Schultz classic “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The show is titled “Christmas Time is Here” and plays at 6 p.m. today and 2 p.m.

Sunday at the Coal City High School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Ticket sales benefit the On Broadway Dancers, a nonprofit youth group that provides performance opportunities, education and college scholarships for members, and the Coal City Fire Protection District.

The dance studio, based in Coal City, also provides for families in need, raising money through its performances.

The two previous Christmas programs have raised more than $10,000.

Democracy worth the wait

In an age of smartphones, instant gratification is the rule, not the exception.

There’s an app for that.

Too often, our society attempts to apply the instant gratification template to elections.

Pre-election polls predict winners.

Election Day exit polls do the same.

Often, large news organizations project winners moments after polling places close.

By election night, people want to know who won and move on with their lives.

Democracy, however, doesn’t work that way.

Efforts to make voting more inclusive and convenient led to the expansion of absentee voting rights in Illinois.

No longer do people have to be in the hospital or nursing home or out of state or otherwise unable to go to their home precinct to vote on Election Day. Anyone can vote by absentee ballot, which must be postmarked the day before Election Day. But it takes time for those ballots to reach election authorities. The Postal Service is given two weeks to deliver them, which seems adequate.

Same-day voter registration is an additional way to be inclusive and convenient. Ballots cast in that manner are considered provisional, and election officials are given time to verify the same-day registrations before counting those votes.

So by Nov. 18, the last absentee ballots arrived, and the last provisional ballots were verified, and Illinois finally had a decision in the state treasurer’s election.

The winner is not state Rep. Tom Cross, a Republican from Oswego, who led the close contest on election night by only about 19,500 votes.

The winner is state Sen. Mike Frerichs, a Democrat from Champaign, who by Nov. 18 ended up with about 9,600 more votes than Cross.

Cross conceded the contest to Frerichs on Nov. 19 in what Frerichs called a “good” and “gracious” telephone call.

Thus, Frerichs will become the new state treasurer in January; he will replace outgoing Republican Treasurer Dan Rutherford.

Instant gratification was nowhere to be found in the long, post-election vote-tabulating process in the treasurer’s race.

But every person out of the more than 3.5 million who cast a ballot was heard, as they should have been. And that was worth the wait.

With immigration action, Obama moves to cement his coalition

As things stand now, President Obama will leave the White House with two legacies. The first legacy is historic: Obama will always be the nation’s first black president.

The second is policy: He is the creator of Obamacare, the national health care system Democrats had tried to enact for decades.

Now, with his unilateral edict to legalize millions of illegal immigrants, Obama is seeking a third legacy. This one is political, as he tries to strengthen, expand and extend the Obama coalition, built on the support of minorities, youth and women, in hopes that it will last far beyond his presidency.

No, Obama’s executive action will not turn millions of illegal immigrants into voters tomorrow. But it will begin a process that will end there. And it will encourage more immigrants to come illegally to the United States in the future, where Obama and his party hope they will become reliable Democratic voters.

The country already is becoming less white – a trend that for now favors Democrats – and Obama’s move will push the process along.

Now, as that history suggests, Obama is acting in the face of public opinion. A Wall Street Journal poll released shortly before the president’s announcement found that just 38 percent approved of Obama’s unilateral action, while 48 percent disapproved.

The public’s approval of Obama’s action is roughly equal to its approval of another unpopular Obama legacy item, the Affordable Care Act. In the most recent Gallup poll, just 37 percent said they approved of Obamacare.

But Obama’s action is not about winning broad support now. It’s a long-term effort to increase the number of Hispanic voters, who chose Obama over Mitt Romney by 71 percent to 27 percent in 2012. If that support can be cast in cement, and the number of Hispanic voters

increased even beyond current demographic trends – well, that would be very good news for the future health of the Obama coalition.

Obama’s action doesn’t have to be broadly popular to achieve that goal. Just as Obamacare was designed by Democrats, passed on a strict party-line vote, and directed in significant part toward Democratic constituencies, so Obama’s immigration action can be targeted specifically to shore up a key element of his coalition in hopes that it will remain Democratic for a long, long time. That’s what Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros meant when he said “the intensity of the benefits will be deep.”

That long-term benefit makes executive action worth it, even though it is of dubious legality, is a terrible precedent for future presidents, and could be big political trouble for Obama in coming months. At this point in Obama’s presidency, it’s all about the legacy.

CHAMPAIGN – Wilmington is No. 1, and wow, how it happened.

Senior Jordan Sarr, in his first season at Wilmington after moving in from Indiana, kicked a 31-yard field goal into the wind on the final play Friday to give the Wildcats a heart-stopping 20-17 victory over Williamsville and the Class 3A state championship at the University of Illinois.

Sarr, who earlier kicked a 25-yard field goal, walked onto the field after Wilmington (140) called timeout with 4 seconds left and calmly drilled the ball inside the left upright, out of the hold of Austin Headrick, to cap a wild fourth quarter where both teams responded to adversity.

“I kicked it, and I heard the crowd cheering and felt the joy,” Sarr said.

Epting, Knights too much for Redskins

roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – One of the purposes of Thanksgiving tournaments is for basketball coaches and teams determine where their team is and what it needs to work on.

In the case of the Morris boys team, the Redskins just recently got six players from the football team, which made a run to the Class 5A quarterfinals. That’s great for the football program, but not so much for the basketball team, which had those six players for just a week’s worth of practice before the Coal City Turkey Tournament started.

With four games in six days in the tournament, and a Friday-Saturday doubleheader coming up next weekend, Morris is getting thrown into action quickly, perhaps before many of the Redskins are fully ready to go.

“We have a front-loaded schedule, and that’s a problem right now,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said after his team lost, 73-53, Wednesday to Elmhurst Immaculate Conception in the tournament. “We have more games than practices in the next couple of weeks, and we need all the practice time we can get. We still need to work on some things.”

Not having the most preparation was not a good thing for the Redskins against Immaculate Conception, particularly when Rashaun Epting had the ball.

Epting scored 31 of his gamehigh 42 points in the first half, hitting 5 of 8 shots from 3-point range and 9 of 11 free throws.

IC raced to a 9-0 lead before Morris called timeout with 5:29 to go in the first quarter. Austin Patterson (nine points) got the Redskins on the board with a 3-pointer before Epting hit his first 3-pointer. Jake Walker (7 points) then hit a 3-pointer for the Redskins, and Epting answered with another. A basket

Epting, a 6-foot-4 junior, scored 15 points in the second quarter as the Knights took a 4626 lead into halftime. Evan Bjelland scored six of his team-high 11 points in the second quarter for the Redskins, who fell to 1-1.

“I would like to get a shot at these guys when we are at full strength,” Blumberg said.

“They are a very good team, but it would be nice to know how we could do later in the season. Besides the ridiculous shooting of Epting, this is the type of athleticism we will see from teams in the conference, like DeKalb and Yorkville.

“We played rather uncharacteristic of us. We kind of got caught up in some other things on the court and we got a little selfish. We expect our three guards (Patterson, Walker and Evan Bjelland) to shoot well, and that didn’t happen tonight.

“We have a front-loaded schedule, and that’s a problem right now. We have more games than practices in the next couple of weeks.”

COAL CITY – The one-two punch of Blake Marks and Kyle Robison should help the Gardner-South Wilmington boys basketball team win plenty of games this season.

Such was the case Tuesday night when the Panthers scored a 65-37 win over Coal City in the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

Marks led GSW (1-1) with 17 points, while Robison added 16. Teammate Austin Kavanaugh scored seven points, while Brandan Elens hit a pair of 3-pointers for his six points.

Coal City led, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter, but GSW outscored the Coalers, 20-6, in the second quarter and 17-5 in the third to pull away.

Isiah Washington led the Coalers with 12 points, while Keegan Clampitt scored eight and Collin Hundley added seven.

Recovering addict must fight battle without family support Dear Abby: I am a former drama queen and addict now enjoying long-term sobriety, or trying to. What’s missing in my life is my family. Since returning from rehab, I have been “going it alone” – and I’m not sure why.

My kids are the only grandchildren in the family.

I work and go to school. I am pleasant. There have been some rough spots I have had to deal with, and when I have needed to, I have called my mom or sister, but they don’t call me or visit. They have expressed no love for me through all of this. When I call, I feel like I’m intruding.

Dear Moving On: It’s possible that the “drama” and turmoil you put your family through while in the throes of your addiction is the reason your mother and sister avoid you.

They may be reluctant to take a chance again.

Because they have made it plain that they aren’t inter-

ested in a closer relationship with you and your children, you should ABSOLUTELY get on with your life. Sobriety isn’t easy to attain, and you have every right to enjoy yours to the fullest.

It would be healthier for you to stop courting rejection and “create” a caring family for yourself and your children. Many people do this for a variety of reasons.

It’s not unusual for people in recovery to socialize with others like themselves. Start there, because it would be better for all of you to spend your time with people who welcome and appreciate you.

Dear Abby: My fiance, “Bryan,” is a mama’s boy. There’s nothing wrong with loving your parents and being close to them, but his family takes

it to the extreme. Bryan must see them multiple times a week, call and text them all the time, and they still don’t get enough.

Then they usually call wanting something or needing our help.

Bryan and I have worked hard to get where we are, and we can’t always be at their beck and call. His sister says I have “changed him” because he doesn’t come around as often anymore.
