Born: Jan. 30, 1920; in Morris, IL Died: Nov. 24, 2014; in Morris, IL Leonard J. Bols, age 94, of Aux Sable Twp., Minooka, passed away November 24, 2014, at Park Pointe in Morris.

Born Jan. 30, 1920, in Morris, Leonard was a son of the late John and Catherine (Broderick) Bols. On Feb. 14, 1944, Leonard married Winona Davies in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris. Together they farmed and raised their family in the rural Morris and Minooka area.

Leonard farmed his entire life, and early on raised registered Holstein dairy cattle. Thereafter he focused on grain farming with his son until retiring.

Leonard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minooka, The Minooka Lions Club, and in years past belonged to the Pure Milk Association.

He served on the Grundy County Board for 28 years, where he was both chairman and vice chairman for many years. Leonard worked on various committees during his tenure, and will be most remembered for being chairman of the Grundy County Building Commission, which designed and oversaw the construction of the current Grundy County Administrative Building. A very civic minded man, Leonard also served as Aux Sable Township Supervisor for 36 years and was a former board member with the Grundy County Farm Bureau. In his free time, Leonard bowled on a

Born: Oct. 28, 1950; in Tuscola, IL Died: Nov. 24, 2014; in Morris, IL Bruce H. Derby, age 64, of Morris, passed away Monday afternoon, November 24, 2014, at Morris Hospital with his loving family

by his side.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris, with Rev. Robert Noesen officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Pesotum, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Friday at the funeral home.

Born on October 28, 1950, in Tuscola, Illinois, he was the son of Phillip and Beverly (Bane) Derby. He graduated from Villa Grove High School with the class of 1969, and later attended Joliet Junior College. Bruce married Martha Diane Walker, and she preceded him in 1988. Later he married Joyce

Meador, and they lived all of their married life in Coal City.

After 20 plus years , he retired from Lyondell Chemical Company.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce of Mazon; five sons, Michael(Angela) Derby of Poplar, MO, Matthew (Carolyn) Derby of Coal City, IL, Dustin (Sara) Derby of Davenport, IA, Chad Derby of Scottsborro, AL and Johnny Crum of Versailles, IL; two daughters, Rachael (Phillip) Hargis of Cincinnati, OH and Melanie (Lucas)Lammers of St. Peters, MO; step-mother, Kay Derby of KY; sixteen, grandchildren, Andrew Kendall, Cory, Samantha, Ashley, Shannon, Jordan, Alexis and Madison Derby, Bobby, Bryan and Brandan Smith and Casey and Harley Hargis and Evan Lammers, Emmalyssa and Ivan Crum; three great grandchildren, Ashton, Henry and Kaysen; three sisters, Connie Buberle, Bernita Barbarka and Debbie Darnell; two brothers, Phillip Derby Jr. and Eric Derby; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 967 in Morris.

Bruce was a fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs, enjoyed cooking, drawing, golfing, woodworking, fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Visitation and video tribute will be Friday, November 28th between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 E. Washington St. in Morris (815-942-2500). Funeral services will follow Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 303 W. St. Mary’s St. in Minooka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Tuan Van Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minooka.

Pallbearers will be Leonard’s grandchildren: Jeff Friant, Kristin Thomas, Dave Bols, Kelly Olson, Ryan Schaefer, Nick Schaefer, Alan Schaefer and Brittany Schaefer. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Thomas and Rob Craig.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Rich Meyer and Luella Kellogg met in 2006 when they started exercising together. Instead of being alone this Thanksgiving, the two decided to enjoy Thanksgiving together at Al’s Diner in Morris.

“I think it’s wonderful to be able to sit with a good friend, and today is a good day to do it,” Meyer said.

This is Kellogg’s fourth year enjoying Thanksgiving at Al’s where community members Phil Ortiz, Gary Rockis, Jim Baum and Al Lopez have come together with I Care International to serve Thanksgiving dinner to those who don’t want to be alone on Thanksgiving.

“My kids have something else to do today, and I don’t want to cook,” Kellogg said.

“There [are] no leftovers, no cleanup this way.”

Meyer said it was his first time coming and wasn’t aware the event was held each year until Kellogg invited him to join her after she found out he was going to be alone on Thanksgiving, as well.

The free Thanksgiving meal started 12 years ago to give the community a place to go. The meal is served by volunteers and Lopez’s family members. There is no bill for the traditional Thanksgiving meal or the service.

Bulmaro Torres, a sophomore at Morris Community High School, spent his day helping serve the steady stream of people who filed into his uncle’s restaurant.

“I wanted to be helpful to the people who come here,” Torres said. “It’s been busy today, because sometimes people don’t have family and they need help from others.”

Melinda Cisco spent this year serving others, as well.

It was her first time at Al’s for Thanksgiving.

“I just wanted to help out, we always eat here and it’s good that people know

Selma Irwin came from Joliet to have Thanksgiving with Mike Painter and Sharon LaFontaine who have been coming to dinner for the past five years at the downtown Morris restaurant.

“It’s always very good,” Painter said. “I don’t have room in my small apartment to cook and serve a turkey, and this beats cooking at home.”

Lopez starts preparing for the holiday feast the day before prepping nine, 18- to 20pound turkeys with all the trimmings to feed those who just need somewhere to go.

“This is the biggest crowd we’ve ever served,” Lopez said. “We have enough to serve 190 plates, and we are almost out of food.”

He said while no reservations have been required the past 12 years, he may have to start because as of yesterday he only knew of about 36 peo-

ple who were coming to eat.

One long table at the back of the diner was filled with his family who all come to enjoy the day together while serving others.

His Thanksgiving Day

starts at 5 a.m. and goes well into the early evening as he cleans up from the day’s events, but he said he doesn’t mind.

“I’ll keep doing it as long as I am here, because a lot of

people have no place to go, no family,” he said.

He said he is especially grateful to everyone who makes pies and bread and donates to the cause each year, freeing up some of his time.

Technology Committee approves GIS data sharing for nonprofits agreement

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Local nonprofit organizations are a step closer to being able to use Geographical Information Systems data for free thanks to a proposed sharing agreement.

The Technology/Elections Committee members unanimously approved Tuesday the GIS data sharing for nonprofits agreement, which is set to go before the full board for approval Dec. 9.

County Board Chairman Ron Severson said GIS charges companies for making maps, and previous data sharing agreements allow GIS to share data with government agencies for free.

“They just wanted to include nonprofits. With this agreement, they can give that stuff out for free,” Severson said Wednesday.

vid Welter said there’s no reason why the county would want to charge nonprofits and the community for data. He added the county has worked with the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District to provide maps to the department.

David Ostrander, GIS coordinator for Grundy County, said GIS sells data at 35 cents per parcel. He added Grundy County has 2,600 parcels.

He decided to propose the new nonprofit agreement and present it to the committee after last week he received a parcel data request from Brittaney Ross of Elevate Energy, a Chicago-based nonprofit that specializes in electricity pricing and efficiency programs.

“She got the ball rolling by asking for this data,” Ostrander said. “It’s the first time anyone from a nonprofit has asked.”

Ostrander said the agree-

ment will allow nonprofits to have a whole copy of a data set so staff can run their own analysis. The coordinator added he has had data requests for different county board districts and anything that is mappable.

“This has to do with data that can be visualized in a map, such as parcel and real estate information, parcel boundaries, addresses, tax codes, city and rural zoning, all that geographical specific information,” Ostrander said.

Jeanine Otte, manager of

marketing and strategy for Elevate Energy, said the nonprofit uses GIS data to improve energy efficiency design and implementation for communities.

“If a municipality knows certain buildings are using more energy than other buildings, it can prioritize energy use for those buildings. It’s a smart use of resources and saves money for residents,” Otte said Wednesday.

Ostrander said the data sharing agreement has a stipulation that states the organi-

zation has to be performing a specific project for Grundy County or a governmental unit. He added organizations aren’t allowed to sell the data.

Information on the Elevate Energy project was not immediately available, but Otte said the project would be related to improving energy efficiency.

If the County Board approves the agreement, Ostrander said he will sit down with representatives from Elevate Energy to ensure they will follow the stipulations when using the shared data.

6 Gegenheimer to receive official letter

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka Consolidated School District 201 board voted to have a letter drafted to Superintendent Al Gegenheimer responding to allegations of unprofessional conduct at a prior board meeting.

The board of education voted, 5-1, to have the district’s attorney draft the letter at a special meeting Wednesday night, following a closed session of over an hour. Board member Kevin Hannon was absent.

Board member John Clucas voted against the motion.

Following the meeting, board President Jim Satorius said the official correspondence will be a letter of clar-

ification and a directive of future conduct.

District 201 Attorney Barb Erikson said the letter is technically a reprimand because the board approved a motion Nov. 20 to formally reprimand the superintendent.

“The focus of the directive is to move forward,” Erikson said. “It’s not negative in nature, it’s constructive.”

The controversy started at the Oct. 22 board meeting over a survey that was to be distributed to parents, via teachers at an upcoming parent/teacher conference.

Board member Kristan Crouch was asked to create a first draft of the survey prior to that meeting, Satorius said after Wednesday’s meeting. There also was input from other board members,

“There was some collaboration of the survey with the board on it,” Satorius said. “It needed a lot more.”

It was during the board discussion Oct. 22 that things got heated between Gegenheimer and Crouch, as well as between other board members.

Board members chose not to comment about the incident or the action. Gegenheimer said he did not want to comment on it either.

The actual survey was never released by the board of education, Satorius said. It will now be re-worked and collaborated on with the teacher’s union.

When asked if the issue is now over, Satorius said, “That should be the end of it.”

MORRIS – The Community Foundation of Grundy County has partnered with nonprofit agencies that serve Grundy County for “Giving Tuesday.”

“It goes with Thanksgiving Thursday, Black Friday, Shop Local Saturday and Cyber Monday,” said Julie Buck, executive director of the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

On Tuesday, a global initiative will ask charities, families, businesses, community centers and students around the world to come together for one common purpose: “to celebrate generosity and to give.”

In Illinois, Donors Forum is coordinating this initiative, and has one bold goal: $12 million raised by Illinois nonprofits from 100,000 individual donors – in one day.

Williamsville is led by 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior quarterback Luke Bleyer. He has thrown for more than 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Danny Dakin has caught 45 passes for more 800 yards and 10 touchdowns. Sophomore Jace Franklin leads the ground attack with more than 850 yards and 14 touchdowns.

On defense, seniors Nick Cox and Kyle Kent both have more than 100 tackles. Kent has seven sacks and Cox six. Senior John Karras has 11 sacks.

“Williamsville runs a spread offense,” said Reents, who doubles as the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator. “They’re good at the skill positions. They can run and pass, and they definitely have good speed. They have a state championship type of team. This is the one team we will have played that is the same as we are from a speed standpoint.

“They do a lot of reading out of their spread. They remind me a little of Manteno. They prefer to run, but they also have the weapons to throw the ball.”

Included was a heart-stopping 20-19 quarterfinal win over St. Joseph-Ogden.

Wilmington is led by the “NickCat” backfield of Class 3A all-stater Nick McWilliams and junior Nick Hawkins. McWilliams has rushed for 1,342 yards and scored his 23rd and 24th touchdowns in Saturday’s 46-13 semifinal win over Byron. Hawkins has rushed for 1,109 yards with 13 touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Mason Southall is a threat with his arm and legs. Southall has run for more than 500 yards and thrown for more than 800. Allstater Alex Zlomie and senior Joe Mann, the leading tackler from his inside linebacker post, are Southall’s favorite targets.

The offensive line of tackles Derek Kirchner and Bailey Boswell, guards Alex Siriani and Kyal Davis and center Ben Studer has played well.

Zlomie, along with Southall, anchors the Wildcat secondary.

Kirchner and senior nose tackle Mason Del Angel have feasted on enemy quarterbacks in the postseason.

WILMINGTON – Wilmington athletic director Joe Barbic has added responsibilities this week as the undefeated Wildcats football team travels to the University of Illinois.

At 4 p.m. today, Wilmington (13-0) will take on undefeated Williamsville (13-0) for the IHSA Class 3A state football championship.

Among Barbic’s many responsibilities this week was to round up the members of the 2014 “Wilmington Experience” for their trip down Route 47 this morning. That means getting all the Wilmington Harley-Davidson club members, the Illinois Artillery group that provides the ear-shattering Civil War cannon for Wildcat home games, the Wilmington Fire Department, high school marching band, cheerleaders and pompom squads all together.

It also includes the 5,742 residents of Wilmington, who provide the pregame festivities at Wildcat home football games.

The Class 3A title game is shaping up as a classic. The undefeated Bullets, champions of the Sangamo Conference, have outscored their 13 opponents, 452-92. On Saturday, Williamsville scored three times in the fourth quarter and crushed downstate Mount Carmel, 42-8, in a semifinal in Williamsville.

OFFENSE CAN’T SUSTAIN SUCCESS

kfishbain@shawmedia.com DETROIT – The first-quarter scoring drought ended. The Bears jumped out to a 14-3 lead, and all seemed well Thursday at Ford Field.

Could they pull off the upset?

Nope.

Instead, Detroit outscored the Bears, 31-3, the rest of the way, en route to a 34-17 win, and the Bears’ offense that seemed to have the right plan early on against a stout Lions defense did what it’s done so many times this season: stalled.

“Penalties, we shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times early in the game,” tight end Martellus Bennett said. “Had some drives going, then a couple holdings. Different penalties on the offense really set us back, put us behind the chains. What do you call on a third-and-20, thirdand-17?”

Five times in the loss, the Bears faced a third down and more than 10 yards to go, converting only one of those situations. The penalty that stung the most was Roberto Garza’s holding penalty in the second quarter, negating a 22-yard gain

“Again, I’ll give you the same speech every time, we have moments where we move it, then we get stalled and then do what we had to do.”

The Bears are averaging 21.1 points a game, 21st in the league, a year after finishing second in the NFL in points.

They had a good drive after halftime, going 63 yards on 13 plays, but couldn’t convert a third-and-3 from Detroit’s 17yard line and settled for a field goal.

“We just didn’t do enough, and we couldn’t overcome the adversity that we had during the course of the game and matching score for score,” Trestman said. “We couldn’t do that.”

The Bears ran the ball with Matt Forte a total of five times, an incredibly low number, even against the league’s best run defense, but Trestman believes wwall the quick throws are an extension of the run game.

However, like the rest of the offense that everyone saw click in the first quarter, Trestman said of those passes, “We just couldn’t sustain it.”

Punting: Rookie Pat O’Donnell had his best punting game of the season, or at least since the win in Atlanta – maybe it’s something about domes?

His six punts went for a net average of 45.7 yards, tying a season-high. O’Donnell’s gross punting average was 48.0 yards, and he pinned the Lions inside the 20 three times.

First-half run defense: The Bears were able to get the Lions into some third-and-long situations, favorable for a banged-up defense, because of stout play up front early on, holding Joique Bell to 16 yards on eight carries before halftime.

Second quarter: After a great start, the Bears couldn’t stop the Lions in the second, allowing 21 points. Matthew Stafford was 14 of 16 passing for 196 yards and two scores in the quarter. The offense didn’t help, either, punting twice when given opportunities to extend or retake the lead.

Pass coverage: Kyle Fuller, likely not at 100 percent, was overmatched facing Johnson, and he didn’t get a ton of help from the rest of the defensive backs, either. Stafford found receivers and running backs open in the Bears’ defense with ease, completing 75.6 percent of his passes to nine different receivers. Johnson had 11 catches for 146 yards and two scores.

Running game: Weird to see something involving Matt Forte in this category, but the Bears clearly didn’t think they could run the ball, and then fell behind to boot. He finished tying a career-low

with five carries for 6 yards, and the Bears rushed for 13 yards, tied for the third-fewest in franchise history.

The defense that had been abysmal in the second quarter opened the second half by forcing a three-and-out. The offense had it at midfield, facing second-and-8, and Bennett dropped a pass. On the next play, Cutler went for Marquess Wilson down the sideline, who made a nice catch, but was just out of bounds. The Bears punted, and the Lions put the game away on their next drive.

Trailing 24-17, the Bears had the Lions in a third-and-4 from Detroit’s 11-yard line after a great punt. Stafford thread the needle to Golden Tate, but it was a pass that Demontre Hurst should have knocked down, if not intercepted. He read the play and was right there, just got boxed out by Tate and missed the ball. The Lions got first downs on five of their next six plays, then scored the game-sealing touchdown to start the fourth quarter.

What now?

Record: 5-7 What it means: Any hopes had for a miraculous playoff run are all but over. The Bears fall three games back of the Lions in the NFC North.

What’s next:The Bears don’t get a long weekend, as they’ll get back to work Sunday before hosting Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and the Cowboys on Thursday night.

Morris, Minooka gridiron alumni square off tonight STAFF REPORTS MINOOKA – They are back in orange and black. Again.

After a successful inaugural event last year, Minooka Community High School alums are holding the second annual Alumni Football game against alums of Morris Community High School on Friday at Minooka High School’s Central Campus in Minooka, according to a news release from Minooka.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m., and admission at the gate is $5 a person.

Last year’s game, which was played in frigid conditions, drew a crowd of more than 700 people, Minooka High School said in the news release.

While the game ended in a tie at 8, more than 100 participants from Minooka – including football players, band members, cheerleaders, poms and choir members – enjoyed the event.

“This event raised close to $4,500,” one of the event’s organizers, Karianne Craig (Cronkite), Minooka Class of 1999, said in the news release.

“We are working hard to make this year’s event even more successful.”

There are always things for which to be thankful November finally decided to let us share in its famous holiday. The Thanksgiving celebration arrived and passed.

My mind almost can’t handle the realization that from coastto-coast nearly all Americans sat down, ate, and watched football. The simple fact that we live in a country where that is even possible is something to be grateful for.

For most folks, that scenario played out once again, and it will in the following years.

But for all too many, that isn’t what this holiday felt like.

For some, this could be the first Thanksgiving alone. For others, it might just be another reminder of what basic needs they don’t have. And still others might ask the question, “What do I have to be thankful for?”

ri, from the United Methodist Church, started his Community Thanksgiving message on Tuesday evening saying we should be thankful for the little things, even the automatic dishwasher.

I couldn’t help but smile.

He is absolutely right. It is all too easy to get caught up in the things that we don’t possess. We pass right through the outdoors everyday. There are moments that we really appreciate it. There are a lot of moments though, when we are so caught up in the little annoyances, that we forget about how blessed we are with what God has surrounded us with.

Each morning I am thankful for the vast universe we live in. I step out of my house in complete darkness and look to the heavens. I pause, everyday, and look to the stars.

Picking up the slack for women

St. Vincent’s Hospital went from lifesaver to bankrupt to closed to construction site for luxury condominiums in what seemed the twinkle of an eye in lower Manhattan.

Its end created a void. It was a place of births, last breaths, long and grueling nights, close calls and emergency care.

Its closure is made no less traumatic by the memory of words spoken by St. John Paul II when he visited these shores in 1987. He told Catholic health care workers: “Your health care ministry ... is one of the most significant services which the Catholic Church offers to society in the name of Jesus Christ.”

But it is precisely because of that service that Ronald Rak found himself walking the emptied halls of St. Vincent’s four years ago. Rak is the CEO and president of St. Peter’s Healthcare System in New Jersey. What he saw saddened him: derelict operating rooms, empty offices, vacant hallways; a place of aid and healing beginning to uneasily vanish.

The Gianna Center cares for women in a way that is foreign to much of health care today. The scandal of women’s health care is that problems aren’t solved, complications aren’t investigated and dispensing quick fixes and pills are all too often the protocol.

But Gianna is something different.

Rak went immediately to the Gianna Center that day, and St. Peter’s would soon bring Gianna under its wing, seeing it as not only “critical to the care of women in New York City,” but as possibly the “genesis” of something more, Rak says.

That was the beginning of the National Gianna Center for Women’s Health, which has expanded from Manhattan to

Kathryn Jean Lopez 14 cities, building a business model and even undertaking legislative outreach so that alternative health care, rooted in Catholic social teaching but (as the Gospel teaches), not exclusive to Catholics, can be accessible.

The Gianna Center exists in no small part to serve as an open door to women facing unplanned pregnancies, offering support and counsel that often goes by the wayside in secular hospitals. The Gianna message, Dr. Anne Nolte, Gianna’s director, explained, is: “We’re going to make sure you’re healthy and your baby is healthy and do whatever it takes to help you get through this.”

Rak points to the possibility of transforming women’s health care in America. This from a Church, he points out, that is still often painted as anti-women, even as modern popes have stressed the importance of the female perspective. I don’t expect to see it on the cover of a leading women’s glossy anytime soon, but Gianna might just be leading a whole new feminist movement, one, with doctors like Anne Nolte, in a revived tradition of the sisterhood that built St. Vincent’s in the first place.

To the Editor: For the past 40 years, I have had the pleasure to witness Dr. Cesario Cumba wear many hats. My journey with him began when I was in first grade and met my best friend for life, his oldest daughter Mayette.

As anyone can relate, in grade school I spent countless hours at Mayette’s house. What I remember most about my sleepovers at Cumba’s house was hearing Dr. Cumba leave in the middle of the night to attend to sick patients in need at the hospital. Also, I remember hearing him early in the morning, again, leave before dawn to go scrub in for surgery.

Back then, I was amazed by his dedication to his profession and have witnessed that dedication in all aspects of his life.

I have seen him wear the father hat and as of late the grandfather hat. All who know Dr. Cumba know that he is 100 percent dedicated to his family, and that is where he finds true joy. He has supported his chil-

dren through every single thing they have wanted to explore: Law school, medical school, private university’s business programs, large wedding celebrations, fun family vacations … Dr. Cumba knows how to work hard and also how to relax, especially with his wife, four wonderful children, and 12 grandchildren.

I have seen Dr. Cumba, myself as a patient. He has been my one and only family doctor for my entire life. The compassion he shows to his patients is heartwarming. He provides his patients with excellent care and compassion.

I have been a pharmaceutical rep for 23 years and I used to see Dr. Cumba as a customer of mine for part of that time.

If you were to ask any rep

in the industry, they would say that Dr. Cumba is a fair, competent, respectful, disciplined, hard-working, and kind doctor to call on. I bring this up because back in the day he would ask companies to donate medicine for his mission trips to the Philippines, where he and Lilia would go to serve others in need … always serving others.

During this Thanksgiving week, I wanted to stop and give thanks that our community has such a fine physician. I am honored to know Dr. Cumba as a father to my best friend, as a personal doctor of mine, as a customer back in the day, as a servant to others, and most importantly, as a lifelong friend.

South starts with only 10 tricks: four spades, two hearts, three diamonds and one club. The best line is to take two club ruffs in the South hand to get the spade-trick total up to six.

Here, with spades 3-2, it does not matter where declarer wins the first trick, but just in case trumps are 4-1, he should take it with his heart king and lead the club king.

Suppose that East wins with his ace and returns a heart. South takes that with dummy’s ace, cashes the club queen, ruffs a club high, leads the spade four to dummy’s eight, ruffs the last club, overtakes his remaining spade with dummy’s ace, draws trumps and claims.

Botox uses cosmetically harmless and effective Dear Doctor K: Can you explain how Botox reduces lines and wrinkles?

Dear Reader: “Botox” is short for “botulinum toxin.”

Botulinum toxin injections were first used for cosmetic purposes in the late 1980s.

Since then, this therapy has gained quite a following. In 2012, these injections were the leading nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in the United States among men and women in nearly all age groups.

Why is this treatment for wrinkles and frown lines so popular? Botulinum toxin injections are quite effective at temporarily smoothing a wrinkled face, brow or neck.

Over time, they slow the formation of deeper, more permanent facial lines. They are relatively affordable; they

Wrinkles and frown lines are caused, in part, by the tug of muscles beneath the skin.

The tug causes smooth skin to form wrinkles and creases.

Botox relaxes the muscles that are tugging on the skin.

Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by bacteria.

If you ingest these bacteria in improperly preserved foods, or if they infect a wound, they can cause botulism. Botulism is a rare but potentially deadly disease.

But when Botox is used for a cosmetic procedure, it is in

Tiny doses of sterile, purified botulinum toxin are injected into specific muscle sites.

The solution doesn’t enter the bloodstream, and the procedure causes no harm.

The amount used in a cosmetic treatment is far less than the amount needed to cause illness.

Botulinum toxin works by blocking the release of acetylcholine. This chemical messenger helps trigger muscle movement. By blocking acetylcholine in a few strategic areas, the toxin inhibits selected muscles from contracting. As a result, the muscles controlling facial expressions relax and creases in the skin smooth out. Because the muscle can’t contract, new creases don’t form. (I’ve put

Botulinum toxin injections take just minutes and don’t cause much discomfort. You may notice mild redness, minor headaches or occasionally minor bruising. The muscle-relaxing, wrinkle-reducing results usually last for about three or four months.

Many people worry that botulinum toxin injections will leave them with an unnatural expression or with frozen features. But when done well, these injections shouldn’t drastically change your ability to form facial expressions.

In rare cases, injections near the upper eyelids or eyebrows may make them droop temporarily. But side effects are typically uncommon and

minimal.

Following its introduction for cosmetic purposes, Botox also is being used to treat a growing number of medical conditions. All of these conditions involve muscle tension that can be relieved

by Botox. Examples include overactive bladder, symptoms of an enlarged prostate, excessive sweating, tremors and other uncontrollable muscle spasms, and even migraine headaches.
