MORRIS – The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign, which benefits We Care of Grundy County and The Salvation Army, is set to kick off Friday in Morris.

“The bell ringers will be out every day starting Friday at Wal-Mart, and they will be in front of Jewel on weeknights,” said Eric Fisher, We Care of Grundy County executive director.

The annual bell ringing campaign is a major fundraiser for We Care, according to Fisher, who said last year the campaign brought in about $17,000 to the organization.

The Salvation Army’s National Red Kettle campaign aims to raise money to provide toys for children, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry and social service programs year-round, according to its website.

In Grundy County, We Care facilitates the Red Kettle campaign. In return for facilitating it, 80 percent of proceeds stay within the county and will be spent by We Care to help low-income families.

Al’s Family Restaurant provides free Thanksgiving meal in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Downtown Morris was quiet on Thanksgiving Day. Stores were closed for the holiday, so shoppers and workers could spend the day with family and friends.

But at Al’s Family Restaurant workers dashed from table to table, serving plates overflowing with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberries.

Al’s wasn’t open for business. Owners Al and Maria Lopez, along with many of their family members and friends, were volunteering their time providing a free meal to anyone in Morris who wanted somewhere to go.

Dr. Phil Ortiz has hosted I Care International’s Thanksgiving Dinner each year as a way to give back to the community and to give residents a place to go and be with others.

“It started because I knew there were a lot of people alone at the holiday time,” Ortiz said previously.

Ortiz is the co-founder of I Care International, an organization that works to improve vision and health for those less fortunate. I Care volunteers travel to other countries, providing glasses, hearing aids and other medical supplies to people in need.

At the Thanksgiving dinner, donations of used glasses and hearing aids also are accepted for I Care International service trips.

The dinner also had plenty of satisfied diners.

Sonja Torkelson of Morris sat in a booth with Jerry Davidson of Morris, where they had just finished their meal and a dessert of pie.

“It was delicious and huge,” Davidson said. “My family is all spread out and the two of us can’t eat a whole turkey, so this was a nice alternative.”

Torkelson said they had plans to cook a couple of turkey legs on Saturday, but with just the two of them, it seemed impractical to make an entire traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Al Lopez has served the free meal to the community for 13 years.

He understands many people don’t have family or a place to celebrate, so he enjoys providing it.

“I hope we do it again next year,” Lopez said. “I have to say thanks to everyone that lends us help, I Care, Jim Baum, and Gary Rockis, and all the people who drop off bread and pies.”

Wednesday to have all nine turkeys and their the fixings ready to fill 160 orders. The free dinner is served in two settings, one at noon and the second at 1:30 p.m.

Ron Martens of Morris sat alone in a booth just inside the front door, carryout containers filled with leftovers he couldn’t finish, and a slice of apple pie to enjoy at home.

“It’s more than excellent food; it’s a good time for everyone,” Martens said. “It’s not just for the patrons, it’s for the owners, too. It’s one big happy family.”

Martens said he’s been at Al’s for dinner several times on Thanksgiving, anytime he can get transportation.

COAL CITY – The On Broadway Dancers will tell a story of Coal City at this year’s annual holiday show.

James Reinbacher and Kim Scerine put their heads together and created an original script titled “A Twisted Christmas,” which tells the story of bringing the spirit of Christmas to Coal City after a tornado tried to tear the town apart.

“I had an idea and from that the show developed,” Scerine said.

After a dramatic opening featuring footage from June after a tornado hit the town, the cast – made up of Small Town Theatrics alumni and The On Broadway Dancers’ junior and senior lines – takes the stage in a quest to save Christmas.

Santa and his elves are busy preparing Christmas for the world, so Mrs. Claus decides to take on Coal City as her special task.

She brings in assistance from some well-known characters who have helped people celebrate Christmas for decades.

Traditional characters like Rudolph and Frosty are teamed up with unlikely Christmas allies, such as the Grinch and Heat Miser, to aid residents.

All the while, Buddy the Elf tries to keep the peace while worried that people will give up on Santa Claus.

“I like this show a lot because it applies to all ages,” he said. “It kind of links different eras of Christmas together.”

Even the lines of the characters point out that no one in the crowd under the age of 30 will even know who Heat Miser is (spoiler – he is a character from the 1974 children’s television special “The Year Without a Santa Claus”).

Pet store focuses on natural foods

New store plans pet adoption event

MINOOKA – The benefits of feeding pets a food made from natural ingredients with little to no filler are clear, according to Megan Kurzweil.

That’s one reason Kurzweil, owner and manager of Forepaws, a new pet supply store in Minooka, said she wanted to open the store. Another reason is the Minooka area has an untapped market when it comes to meeting a demand for pet needs and services, she said.

Kurzweil, who has been working with pets professionally for 15 years, including 10 years as a veterinary technician, said she realized the retail and sales area of the pet industry is her cup of tea.

The Forepaws staff is doing its part now to make sure pet health is its utmost priority.

“We feature a lot of affordable, natural pet food brands,” Kurzweil said. “We don’t have any of what is referred to as grocery store brands, which are often full of filler.”

Corn is a primary filler in both dog and cat foods, she said. Besides a four-pawed family member ending up with allergies that make them itch like crazy, filler tends to be unhealthy overall.

“Cats and dogs don’t process corn effectively,” Kurzweil said. “Not only are they

That’s why a natural diet is important, she said. Kurzweil researches all of the products in her store to verify they have a pet’s best interest in mind.

“We focus mainly on American-made and natural products and offer options for all pet types: dogs, cats, small animal, reptile, bird and fish,” she said.

The store chooses American-made products because foods from China or other foreign areas have become nerve-wracking to the industry, Kurzweil said, with varied results for consumers.

Forepaws has a couple grand opening events coming up.

Donation allows winterization of downtown Morris planters SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Thanks to a generous donation to the Morris Downtown Development Partnership from the Home For The Holidays Committee, the MDDP was able to “winterize” the downtown planters just in time for the annual Home For the Holidays festivities.

Although the planters are updated each spring, Julie Applegate, MDDP executive director, wanted to see the planters have a fresh look year-round.

Oceanographer John Knauss dies at age 90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS NARRAGANSETT, R.I. – A former administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration whose work is credited with highlighting the fragility of the world’s oceans, has died.

John A. Knauss was 90.

The University of Rhode Island, where Knauss founded a graduate program in oceanography, confirmed his death.

The school said in a statement that Knauss died peacefully at his home in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, on Nov. 19. No cause of death was given.

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and URI President David Dooley said Knauss played a pivotal role in underscoring the importance of the planet’s seas. Whitehouse called him “a visionary leader and a brilliant scientist.”

Knauss also served as undersecretary for oceans and atmosphere in the U.S. Commerce Department.

A memorial gathering was planned for Dec. 5 in Narragansett.

Guy V. Lewis, Phi Slama Jama coach, dies at 93

By KRISTIE RIEKEN The Associated Press HOUSTON – Former University of Houston men’s basketball coach Guy V. Lewis, best known for leading the Phi Slama Jama teams of the 1980s, has died. He was 93.

He died at a retirement facility in Kyle, Texas, on Thanksgiving morning surrounded by family, the school said Thursday. Lewis coached the Cougars for 30 years. He guided Houston to back-toback NCAA title games in 1983 and ’84 but never won the national championship, losing to N.C. State in the 1983 final on Lorenzo Charles’ last-second shot, one of the NCAA Tournament’s greatest upsets and most memorable plays.

“It feels awful,” Lewis said after that game. “I’ve never lost a game that didn’t feel that way, but this one was terrible.”

Lewis, who helped lead the integration of college basketball in the South by recruiting Elvin Hayes and Don Chaney to Houston, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

Known for plaid jackets and wringing his hands with a red polka-dot towel during games, Lewis compiled a 592-279 record at Houston, guiding the Cougars to 27 consecutive winning seasons from 1959-85.

He was honored as the national coach of the year twice (1968 and ’83) and led Houston to 14 NCAA Tournaments and five Final Fours.

Lewis had mostly avoided the spotlight since retiring in 1986. He suffered a stroke in February 2002 and had used a wheelchair in recent years.

He was known for putting together the “Game of the Century” at the Astrodome in 1968 between Houston and UCLA. It was the first regular-season

Houston defeated the Bruins in front of a crowd of more than 52,000, which, at that time, was the largest ever to watch an indoor basketball game. Lewis attended the introductory news conference in December 2007 for Kevin Sumlin, the first black football coach in Houston history.

It was a symbolic, significant appearance because Lewis signed Houston’s first two black basketball players and some of the first in the region in Hayes and Chaney in 1964, when programs were just starting to integrate.

Hayes and Chaney led the Cougars to the program’s first Final Four in 1967 but lost to Lew Alcindor’s UCLA team in the semifinal game.

“Basketball in the state of Texas and throughout the South is all due to coach Guy

V. Lewis,” Hayes said in 2013.

“He put everything on the line to step out and integrate his program. Not only that, he had vision to say: ‘Hey, we can play a game in the Houston Astrodome.’ Not only that, he just was such a motivator and such an innovator that created so many doors for the game of basketball to grow.”

Along with Hayes, Lewis also coached fellow All-Americans Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

The three were included on the NBA’s Top 50 greatest players list in 1996. Lewis and North Carolina’s Dean Smith were the only men to coach three players from that list while they were in college.

Players and CBS announcer Jim Nantz lobbied for years for Lewis to get into the Naismith Hall of Fame.

When he finally received the honor in 2013, he made a

rare public appearance. It was difficult for him to convey his thoughts in words in his later years because of aphasia from his strokes, so his daughter spoke on his behalf at the event to celebrate his induction.

“It’s pure joy and we’re not even upset that it took so long. ... Dad is used to winning in overtime,” Sherry Lewis said.

Lewis announced his retirement during the 1985-86 season, and the Cougars finished 14-14, his first non-winning season since 1958-59.

Guy Vernon Lewis II was born in Arp, a town of fewer than 1,000 residents in northeast Texas. He became a flight instructor for the U.S. Army during World War II and enrolled at the University of Houston in 1946. He joined the basketball team, averaged 21.1 points and led the Cougars to the Lone Star Conference championship.

Key figure in keeping gay groups out of Boston parade dies at age 85 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BOSTON – John “Wacko” Hurley, the longtime leader of the Boston St. Patrick’s Day parade and the plaintiff in a 1995 U.S. Supreme Court case that allowed organizers to bar gay

groups, has died.

He was 85. The O’Brien Funeral Home in South Boston confirmed the death.

Hurley’s daughter, Lisa Hurley McDonough, told the Boston Herald her father suffered a seizure Tuesday and

then “just slipped away.”

Although most famous for the court case, friends including former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn say Hurley cared deeply for his fellow veterans and the city. A Korean war veteran who served in the U.S. Navy,

Hurley was the longtime leader of the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council. For more than 50 years, he organized the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston, his lifelong home. Hurley and the council sued after state courts ordered

that gay rights organizations be allowed to march in the parade. The high court ruled unanimously that it would violate the free speech rights of private citizens if they were forced to include groups that don’t share their message.

Program plans 67th year

SENECA – Stavanger Lutheran Church, 2904 N. 32nd Road (five miles north of Seneca) is presenting its 67th annual Scandinavian Christmas Program at 7 p.m. Dec. 6. Gifted singers and musicians from around the area have been invited to perform. Congregation youth dressed in Norwegian attire will sing Christmas carols.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – In Monday’s win over Gardner-South Wilmington in the Coal City Turkey Tournament, the Morris boys basketball team shot 17 of 20 from two-point range.

That’s going to win a lot of games.

On Wednesday against Elmhurst Immaculate Conception, those numbers fell to 7 of 20, a percentage that will not win many games. That proved to be true, as Immaculate Conception scored a 57-35 win, bringing Morris’ record to 1-1 on the year.

While the Redskins did possess a size advantage, the Knights used their superior quickness to swarm on any Morris player who put the ball on the floor, making movement for that player exceedingly difficult. That speed made shots hard to come by and quickly closed passing lanes.

As a result, Immaculate Conception led, 12-5, at the end of the first quarter and took a 27-11 lead into halftime. The Knights’ lightning-quick point guard, Troy Burrows, personally outscored the Redskins, 18-11, in the first half en route to a game-high 26 points. Burrows was remarkably efficient, shooting 11 of 12 from the floor, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

“You can’t shoot 4 of 20 in the first half like we did,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said.

“Against a team like this, with the quickness they have, you can’t claw your way back out of that hole. They are very athletic and we struggled with their quickness.

“We try to preach ball movement over bounce movement, but sometimes our guys still like to use the dribble as an escape mechanism. Against a team like this, that just gets you in deeper trouble.”

Favre the ultimate football warrior There will be more than just a Bears-Packers game on Thanksgiving night at Lambeau Field.

The Packers will officially retire Brett Favre’s number four, unveiling it forever embossed in the Packers’ ring of honor over the North endzone goalposts.

I have often said I thought Brett Favre was probably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game and possibly the greatest player I’ve ever seen next to Walter Payton.

Of course, my vision may be a bit skewed by the fact that in the 18 seasons I served as the color commentator on the Bears radio network, from 1987-2004, I called 22 Bears-Packers games with Favre under center for Green Bay, and the Packers were 20-2 in those games.

Of course there is so much more to Favre than that.

He retired as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yardage (71,838), touchdowns (508), interceptions (336) and, most importantly, wins (186).

Peyton Manning recently has eclipsed all but the interception record, but that doesn’t diminish Favre’s accomplishments in any way.

Two years before Bountygate, rumors had surfaced in the week leading up to the game that the Saints would target the ancient QB and try to take him out of the game.

Just before halftime, Favre was hit late in a sandwich between Bobby McCray and Remi Ayodele, his ankle rolled, and he had to be helped from the field.

At halftime Vikings coaches told me Favre was likely done.

For weeks after the game, rumors circulated the ankle was actually broken.

But on the Vikings’ first possession of the third quarter, Favre limped off the sidelines and gave one of the most heroic performances I’ve ever seen.

Ironically, the fatal pick at the end of the game went to now-Bears CB Tracy Porter after a series of bungles on the sideline by Brad Childress and Darrell Bevell.

Depending on whom you ask, Favre is not recognized as the greatest human being to ever play the game.

But on the football field he was the ultimate warrior and a true hero in green and gold.

Jeffery, Forte active for Chicago; Rolle is out

– Matt Forte (knee) and Alshon Jeffery (groin, shoulder) are active and will return to the Bears’ starting lineup on Thursday night against the Packers.

Forte has not played since injuring his MCL on Nov. 1. Even though he’ll start, expect to see a fair amount of Jeremy Langford, too. Jeffery missed Sunday’s game against Denver, his fifth absence of the season for a third different injury.

Starting safety Antrel Rolle (knee) is inactive for the second game in a row, which means Chris Prosinski will get the start.

Will Sutton is a surprising inactive. He has played in 40 percent of the Bears’ defensive snaps this season and has 10 tackles, two for a loss. Ziggy Hood, who the Bears signed after releasing Jeremiah Ratliff, is active for the second time, although his other game active, he did not play.

It’s that time again. The day of the year on which we count our blessings. For some, 2015 has been filled with amazing and special moments.

For others, the past year has held sorrow and heartbreak. No matter where you fall within that spectrum, there are things worthy to take a moment and give thanks for.

Often, it is in fact the small things that make the biggest difference in our days.

I am thankful for time in the car as a family. It is a moment when no one is allowed to escape to another room.

A time when conversation must take place and opinions heard.

It is a time to enjoy the natural scenery as it passes us by.

Such moments spur discussion, hopes, dreams, and things that we learn about

each other.

I am thankful for traditions. I love it when we drive a certain route on vacation and my kids expect to stop in very specific places to take a break.

It might be a truckstop in Iowa or a dairy farm in Indiana, but if we don’t follow tradition, something is amiss.

I appreciate the requests they make when putting up decorations for the holidays throughout the year. They have grown accustom to certain expectations and it makes me smile.

Those words, “But we always do it this way,” are proof of a childhood they are proud of.

I am thankful for the opportunity to work with children every single day.

The expressions broadcast from their faces convey every emotion one can imagine.

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers A single smile from me can be reflected back with twenty-five giggles and laughs that convinces a person it is possible to make a difference.

Their desire to know and understand the world around them is fascinating to be a part of.

I am thankful for fishing boats. I cannot think of many other places that bring people together like the deck of a boat.

When two or three folks are held in place by the watery obstacle around them amazing things happen. Add in a few catches and the joy is contagious.

What a great way to spend time with not just family, but friends.

I am thankful for duck blinds. Especially the big ones with a hot plate, heater and breakfast being made as we watch for waterfowl.

It sounds all too cushy to be a true outdoor experience, but there is nothing like it.

I have enjoyed wonderful conversations and food all throughout the country on countless early mornings.

The common factor, a big duck blind. I think we got a few birds, but that wasn’t really the point now, was it.

I am thankful for pets.

No matter the day you have had, the frustration you may have faced, when you walk through your door, that furry friend is there for you.

Tails wagging, eyes yearning to be petted, the only desire they possess is to be loved by you.

And they give it back tenfold.

I am thankful for living in a place where I can find

peace and solitude.

I appreciate the massive tangle of roadways and asphalt that make our lives easier to commute, but I do not miss them when I pull down my driveway to another world.

A world where the traffic can no longer be heard, the endless sprawl of suburbia is a distant memory, and the pace of the world slows. I am thankful for my home.

No matter your situation. No matter what trials and tribulations you have endured.

Take just a moment this week to find the memories that you too are thankful for.

Remember the little things.

Remember the times spent outdoors.

Daley chalks scoring last season up to luck, content with defense

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Thanks to a mix of good fortune and good anticipation, the puck came right to Trevor Daley’s stick midway through the third period of a one-goal game Wednesday night in San Jose.

Daley, who had read the play beautifully and went on the attack, was all alone in the slot, maybe five or six feet in front of the goal, with nary a defender within stick’s length.

He shot wide. Way wide.

Last season, a charmed season for Daley, he probably scores on that shot. And plenty of others that have been swallowed up by a goalie, deflected wide, or were just flat-out mishit. Daley had 16 goals and 22 assists in 68 games last season, both career highs. Through 22 games this season, he has zero goals and five assists.

“Last year was a little out of the ordinary for myself,” Daley said. “It was a lot of breaks.

a lot of breaks. I’ve been around long enough to understand that. To do that all the time, I mean, I’d like to, I try to every night. But I don’t know if I’m going to be that lucky every night.”

When the Blackhawks acquired Daley in the Patrick Sharp trade over the summer, the hope was that he could replace Johnny Oduya (who eventually signed with Daley’s old team, the Dallas Stars) as the team’s No. 4 defenseman, even though they’re basically polar opposites in terms of style.

Oduya was the low-scoring, ever-reliable stay-at-home defenseman, while Daley was the high-scoring, defensively liable blue-liner.

But Daley’s been more focused on his defense under Joel Quenneville than he was with the freewheeling Stars.

And after an occasionally bumpy start to the season, Daley looks more comfortable defensively and is taking more chances offensively now that

Daley had some of the worst possession stats of any defenseman in the league last season.

This year, thanks in part to a heavy dose of offensive-zone starts, he’s among the Hawks leaders. The team is controlling a healthy 55.9 percent of shot attempts when Daley is on the ice.

“At the end of the day, I’m a defenseman,” Daley said.

“Whatever team you’re on, as a defenseman, you’d better keep the puck out of the net.

My job’s not to score goals, it’s to keep the puck out of our net and chip in when I can.”

Quenneville seemed cool on Daley early in the season, and his name has been bandied about in trade rumors because of his cap hit ($3.3 million) and the emergence of Viktor Svedberg and Erik Gustafsson.

But Quenneville believes the 32-year-old is turning a corner at both ends of the ice.

He had two assists last Saturday in Vancouver, after having just three in the first 20 games.

“It’s nice to see points to show there is some production there,” Quenneville said. “But

it seemed like he had the puck a lot, had more attack in his mind-set, and the play recognition offensively was there. I thought he defended better, as well. Him and Rozy look like they’re a real solid pair.”

At the start of the season, Marian Hossa said it would take 15 to 20 games for all the new faces in the lineup to feel comfortable in the Hawks’ system. Daley, who spent the first 11 years of his career in Dallas, found that out the hard way.

But now he knows what Quenneville wants – quick, hard passes out of the defensive zone; joining the rush whenever possible; finding that tricky balance between aggressive and smart.

“I’m starting to get there,” Daley said. “There are still times when you get out there and you’re thinking too much.

But the game’s just about reacting, and the quicker you get that the more reps you take, it becomes habit. And for me, I think it’s starting to become habit now.”

OPINION More bad news from Springfield Earlier this month when the General Assembly was in Springfield, House Speaker Michael Madigan called Senate President John Cullerton six times to ask him to move the child care program restoration legislation once it passed the House.

As you probably already know, the deal cut with Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office by state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia Fields, and others to mostly restore the draconian Child Care Assistance Program cuts Rauner made this past summer involved not voting on a bill which would’ve fully restored the governor’s cuts.

Speaker Madigan wanted that bill to pass, however, and apparently believed through much of the day that his chamber would pass it, even though it seemed obvious that Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago, had once again jumped into the political bed with the GOP governor. Some House Republicans were talking about voting for the bill, though, and that kept Madigan’s hopes alive.

Because he thought it still had a shot, Madigan would not relent on Cullerton. And while the constant calls reportedly irritated Cullerton to no end, they didn’t work. Cullerton backed up his member’s deal and the Speaker was politely refused. Six times. The bill died in the House when all Republicans and Dunkin voted against the Speaker.

Cullerton’s chamber has twice passed minimum wage increase bills which have gone nowhere in the House despite the fact that Madigan pushed a referendum last year to raise the minimum wage. Cullerton also passed a property tax freeze bill which provides more money for Chicago Public Schools and kills off the

VIEWS Rich Miller state’s ancient school funding formula. Madigan’s move not only upset local mayors, who really want their money, but also agitated Senators in both parties.

Because Madigan put a hold on the bill, Cullerton couldn’t start the legally required process of “reading” the legislation for three days, which means he now has to bring members back for more than a single day if they return in December.

We’re in the holiday season, so getting legislators back to Springfield isn’t as easy as we’d think, not to mention that if members have to return, they would rather not be in Springfield longer than a single day.

It’s not the worst problem in the world, but it has aggravated the rank and file to no end.

Madigan didn’t believe that Rauner would keep his promise to fund the child care program and will instead once again use the program as a hostage for whatever else Gov. Rauner wants sometime down the line.

When the Department of Human Services’ top lawyer testified last week about the governor’s new administrative rules to fund the program, the House Democrats attempted to get him on record that the Department would indeed be restoring the full program once a budget deal is in place. The attorney refused to say either way, and House Democrats saw that as yet more proof that Rauner can’t keep his word.

Things are not good.

There are 23 million small businesses in the country, according to the Small Business Administration, and small businesses have increased by 49 percent since 1982. More than half – about 54 percent – of sales happen at small businesses, which have created 8 million jobs since 1990.

And this Saturday – after you hit the Black Friday sales at bigger retailers and before

you start planning for online deals on Cyber Monday – you are asked to shop at the ones in your community during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday was started in November 2010 by American Express, when the company simply encouraged people to support small, local businesses. By the next year, officials including governors, mayors, senators and President Barack Obama voiced their support for the day, according to the Small Business Saturday website.

In 2012, 73.9 million people went out to shop at a small business on Small Business Saturday; and last year, an estimated $14.3 billion was spent at small, independent businesses on Small Business Saturday.

There are numerous advantages to buying local: You’re purchasing from neighbors, who in turn reinvest that money into the community.

For every $100 spent at a local, independent store, it generates $45 of secondary local spending. That’s compared to $14 for a big-box chain, according to the American Independent Business Alliance.

In downtown areas of many local communities, there are numerous unique boutique shops that easily could make for an entire day of shopping.

Looking for clothes, housewares or toys? You’re likely to find something that fits your needs from smaller vendors with a more carefully selected inventory.

And as you head from shop to shop, pop into a local restaurant to partake in food or treats. Our downtowns are filled with wonderful eateries as well.

It’s the time of year we all ask for gifts. What better gift can we bestow upon our local business owners – whom we ask to invest in our communities – than to invest in them?

The second rule is not to forget the first rule.

It should be written on everyone’s scorecard as an aide-memoire.

Apply it to this deal. How should South plan the play in six clubs after West leads the diamond jack?

If I had held the North hand, I would have responded two notrump, showing eight or more points and a balanced hand. That might have resulted in a contract of six no-trump, which could have been defeated by a spade lead.

In this auction, North’s raise to four no-trump was quantitative.

If North had rebid four clubs, that would have been the ace-asking Gerber convention.

South’s jump to six clubs showed a five-card suit, which North did well to pass.

There seem to be 12 winners: one spade, four hearts, two diamonds and five clubs.

However, to get all of those heart tricks, South needs a dummy entry.

This looks like the diamond ace, but if declarer ducks the first trick, East will win with the king and give his partner a ruff.

Declarer must win with dummy’s ace and unblock his queen. Then he can draw trumps, cash his two heart honors, and lead a diamond to force a dummy entry.
